You’re the fucking goat at writing I CANNOT emphasise this enough. The way the characters have matured (but still remain very, very dumb) is genius?? Mermaid is kind of a little creature in the earlier chapters, but little kids ARE like that. Idk when she and our hedgehog grew up but I feel kinda… proud of them?? Like I watched them grow up??
It’s like 6:15 where I am, I haven’t gone to bed and I have lectures later today but I don’t even care because staying up to reread your work was so worth.
Once again - you’re goat status!!
liar, liar masterlist here:
before i went to school this morning, i saw the notif for this ask and you dk how much strength it took me to resist clicking on it ‘cause it’d mean that i’d spend the next minute reading it, the next 3 mins re-reading it, the next 5 minutes giggling to myself about it, and then the next 10 minutes just writing up a response, which would result in me eventually skipping school 🌝
i should’ve read it anyway since my class got cancelled last minute and i ended up going for a walk around the neighbourhood ‘cause i was already ready 😐
so then i read it as i walked…
and let me tell you, the WHOLE time i was walking those 12,488 steps, listening to lana del rey’s chemtrails over the country club, i was giggling to myself about this message. like genuinely grinning like a psycho, the dog walkers were giving me weird looks 😭
‘like i watched them grow up??’ — stop cuz this is EXACTLY what i wanted to be emphasised as i was writing 🥹 you’re the first person to actually say this tho, and i’m glad u feel that way! 😫
subtle things like horrible vocabulary during kindergarten which improves slightly over the course of elementary school, and then the slight immaturity in middle school which slowly goes away entering high school for the first time, a completely different environment which is nerve-wracking, but mostly exciting (seeing as the seniors in their life would talk about how amazing their high school years were). it’s a coming-of-age kinda vibe i was going for, and if i managed to do that to the point where you feel the need to actually mention it to me in such a nice message, i’ve succeeded 😭💕 tysm!!
but girl omg, DON’T read this story on a day where you have to get up in the morning 🤨💘 i always have to reiterate this cuz i will NOT be liable for any bad grades my little liars get in their exams cuz they wanted to read this HEFTY, incomplete story instead of sleeping 😡
but ty anyway, your words mean sm to me, you have no idea. i’m about 6k words into the next chapter, and i still have a little more to go, but trust, it’ll probably be released either some time this week (most likely next week). i can’t wait to hear ur thoughts on it 💕 (and GO to sleep ml 😟)
#mozartwasjungkookstan welcome to the liar liar family!#*everyone applauds*#we have a new member of the family everyone#say hellooo!!#i had boba on the way home as i was giggling about this message#and it cost me £5.30???#like inflation wth 😭#but it’s alr cuz it tasted even better as i was thinking to myself about the new liar in the fandom <3#boba always makes me gassy but i love it so idec 😋#liar liar asks!#megumi x reader#megumi fushiguro x reader#fushiguro megumi x reader#megumi x y/n#megumi x you#i took some nice pictures on my walk too#but i doubt anyone wants to see those#(i was smiling behind the phone LMAOOO)#jjk#fushiguro megumi#fushiguro megumi x you#jjk x reader#anyway again i wanna ty for this message cuz it was so kind and nice and made me feel so giddy today#<3

New family 🥀
Bang Chan x Reader
Warning: mention of abuse and sexual trauma
(Pt. 1) — (Pt. 2)
————————— 🥀 ————————
Home life was toxic and your childhood was rough. It’s only recently that you moved out of your mom’s house and since then, you only really keep in contact with your siblings.
The whole family dynamic was toxic. From your immediate to extended. Your mom was verbally abusive. Your our dad… well we don’t even talk about him. He went to prison when you were a baby and that’s all you know.
Although you did grow up with a stepdad. A straight up abusive narcissist. Your sibling were your half siblings so you were the stepchild to him. And he abused you on the daily. Verbal, physical, and even sexual… until you finally reported him. But even then, he just moved out.
Living with your mom as an adult was also tense as you two never got along
Eventually you had a moment of clarity. Realizing that this isn’t normal. So you tried cutting them off. It’s hard and you deal with the turmoil of that constantly…
~~~~
You had a friend named Chan, well actually his name was Chris but Chan was a nickname he liked. You met him in college and have been a little more than friends ever since. You never officially dated for a while, only flirting really. Although you suppose you’re dating now since he’s taken you home to meet his family already…
He was so kind. The sweetest guy you’ve ever met. Always so patient with you and loving. He knows your boundaries and always checks in on you.
You’ve told him about your family and he listens, knowing that some people just want someone to listen.
He also supported your dreams, heck his whole family did. He was a producer, and a good one at that, so when you told him that your dream was to be a dancer, he was excited for you and did everything he could to help you. This is the most support you’ve gotten from someone in your whole life.
Often times you felt like a burden. You weren’t the most physically affectionate and you needed constant reassurance that you’re not annoying.
One day you were having it particularly rough. You weren’t sure exactly what it was but your depression was really hitting hard.
Your boyfriend had sensed something was wrong when chatting on the phone with you so he came over.
He did his best to cheer you up. On his way there he picked up your favorite boba drink and some food.
You were happy to see him and gave him a tight hug the second he stepped in.
As you ate lunch, he asked you what was up.
“My mom called me…” you said with a sigh.
“Yeah?”
“It just… wasn’t good.”
“I understand.” He said while patting your hand. “You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.”
You nodded and continued eating. “How’s the new song going?”
“It’s great. Almost finished!” He replied with a smile. “This is definitely going to be one of my best works.”
“All your work is the best.” You said with a giggle.
“Yeah well, how’s my pretty girl doing? Any auditions lately?”
“Yeah I’m gonna be a back up dance in another music video. I just got the call yesterday.” You said with excitement.
“And you didn’t tell me?” He said in a teasing voice.
“Well I didn’t want to bug you, Channie.”
“You never bug me babygirl.” He replied with a sigh. “Never ever.”
After lunch you both went to the living room to relax. Sometimes you just liked laying with him. He was so warm.
A buzz from your phone, got you distracted from a moment. You looked at the text message and got quiet. It was from your mom.
> Why can’t you just be happy?
You hate when she says that. Always disregards your feelings. You got up and went to your room. Chan was confused and followed after you, just to see you crying on the bed.
“Babygirl, what happened?” He said while sitting next to you.
“Why is she like this?!” You cried. “She can’t just leave me alone!”
Chan looked at the message and hugged you.
“It’s okay, baby—”
“No it’s not!” You blurted out while standing up: “I hate it! I hate it! I hate it!!”
You shook your head, seemingly trying to pull your hair out.
“Okay. Okay.” He said calmly while taking your hands. He was still sitting and had you stand in front of him. “Babygirl, don’t hurt yourself. Look at me…”
You paused and only looked at him with a pout.
Chan wiped your tears and frowned. He hated seeing you like this. He wants to take you away from all this. He wants you to live with him and leave everything behind.
As you continued crying, you sat on his lap and hugged him, crying and sobbing into his shoulder.
“Do you want a new family?”
“What…?” You asked while pulling back.
“A new family. One that loves and supports you.” Chan said while rubbing your cheek. “You know, my parents have always liked you… and my siblings… and extended…”
You teared up. The idea of a family… a non toxic and loving family just taking you in as their own… it was a lot.
“A family that… loves each other… and supports each other….?” You said, more thinking out loud. “N-no bad touching… n-no yelling at me…?”
“No family is perfect but they do love you and will never hurt you like…”
“… like mine…”
He sighed and you instantly hugged him again.
“Yes… yes!” You cried while holding on tight.
“I’ll make that happen, babygirl. Don’t you worry…”
He pulled you back and kissed your forehead before letting you silently cry into his shoulder. He held you as well. The feeling was so warm and secure. You always felt safe with him. You felt so loved when with him. You always wondered if you even deserved that love.
How was this going to work? Well Chan had been planning to propose to you for a while. He’s already been looking at rings. But now he thinks he should speed it up a little. Sooner the better. He wants you to be happy. He knows his family will take you in. They will welcome you with open arms. And he’ll take care of you for the rest of his life…
————————— 🥀 —————————
This is the dream I had where I woke up crying. And my mom did say that to me. Just not thru text. My depression been pretty bad lately…
interlude: fortnite and criminal minds
Y/n and Mark had met the summer before they started college working at the same boba shop down the block from their neighborhood. having no plans before college they became quick friends, spending most days with each other. They spent countless summer nights having sleepovers, binging entire seasons of Criminal Minds, and playing Fortnite until they physically couldn’t keep their eyes open.
Y/n had been pondering the idea of confessing her feelings to Mark for a while. Sure, they were great friends, but friends didn’t look at each other the way they did. Friends didn’t search for each other's eyes while laughing after someone made a joke in a group. Friends didn’t leave lingering touches and fall asleep in each other's arms. Y/n tended to overthink every little interaction, but this time she had outdone herself. She had come to the conclusion that Mark did like her back. And for once, she felt like her delusions might not be so far-fetched.
It was a regular day for Mark and y/n. He was sitting in his bean bag chair, engrossed in fortnite, with y/n perched comfortably across his lap. She had grown unusually quiet, which was strange for her, considering she was usually pointing out things in the game or talking about some crazy shit Jisung had said to her yesterday.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Mark said, nudging her gently.
"Um…" For once in her life, y/n seemed at a loss for words.
"Do you need the brain cell?" Mark smirked at her. This was an inside joke between them, a playful way of offering clarity when one of them was struggling to express themselves.
"Yes, please!" y/n giggled, the tension in her chest loosening slightly.
Mark reached to the side of his head, miming the act of pulling out an invisible brain cell, and placed it into the side of her head. "There you go, it’s yours now," he said with a slight smile.
y/n stayed silent for a moment before blurting out, "You know, Mark, I like you a lot."
"I like you a lot too, idiot. You’re one of the best friends I could ever ask for," he replied, smiling at her before turning his attention back to the game. He seemed to not understand the way y/n meant it, but that didn’t stop her from overthinking.
"Of course he only likes me as a friend. I’m so fucking stupid," she thought to herself. Growing increasingly upset, she shifted positions to sit on his bed instead of the bean bag with Mark. It took a moment for Mark to notice the shift in mood, but when he did, he turned to her and asked, "What’s your deal?" half expecting her to just be scrolling on her phone.
Y/n's eyes flashed with anger and hurt. "Your head is way too big for your body and it makes you look ridiculous and you’ll never be able to fix it," she snapped before storming out of his house.
Mark was left sitting there, controller in hand, staring at the door she had just slammed shut. He felt a mix of confusion and a sting of offense. What had just happened? He replayed the conversation in his mind, but nothing seemed to make sense.
He tried texting her multiple times, each message more desperate than the last. But no matter what he said, y/n never replied. He even went as far as stopping by her house only to be met with a sympathetic look from y/n’s mom, stating she wasn’t home. Days turned into weeks, and Mark was left wondering where he had gone wrong. Summer had slipped away into a moment of time as they both got caught up in their new lives at college, but the unresolved feelings and misunderstandings lingered, a silent echo of what could have been.
Hello, I wanted to request something. I'm still new to your blog, I saw that you had a deredere character! If you can could you write one where him and the reader have already been dating and him and they celebrate valentines day together. I hope my request makes sense. Either way keep up the good work and I love your writing!
asahi haruka [deredere] - Boba Tea & Cats
a/n: okay sooo i started writing this in march and now it's may (•O•) aaaaaand honestly i could blame it on work, or my adhd, or laziness and forgetfullness, or blame in the fact that the tumblr app doesn't fuckin' notify me when i get a request in my inbox like tf! or i can blame all 4 and you can just blame me lmao. anyway, i hope you like it! sorry if it's not what you wanted. instead of valentines day, i made it into a cute anniversary date with a clingy, femboy twink boyfriend.
genre: fluff, high-school sweetheart vibes
word count: 3.9k
warnings: none
You let out a yawn as the school bell chimed, signaling the end of after school clubs and tutoring sessions. You lazily stretched and watched as the other club members gathered their bags and talked about their plans for the weekend. You pulled out your phone, scrolling through missed messages.
“Bye, Y/N-chan~!” called one of the club members. “See you Monday.”
“Yeah, bye~.” you waved as the last club member left.
You went back to your phone. Trying to catch up on your texts before the teachers started circulating. Your phone buzzed, signaling that you got a new message. You opened the text and smiled softly.
‘Did you already go home? (ó﹏ò。)’
Giggling, you text back.
‘Nope. I’m still packing up. I’ll meet you by the gate.’
Ever since you were children, Asahi Haruka had been by your side through thick and thin. You both grew up next door neighbors, attended the same schools, and shared so many memories that you can’t even imagine going a day without him. Asahi is the embodiment of a golden retriever with bright colored hair – adorable, affectionate, and endlessly optimistic. His infectious laughter is like music to your ears, and his boundless energy is like a puppy touching grass for the first time.
However, there was something undeniably magical about the transition from friends to something more. You two are dating. And both of you are complete idiots for each other. Asahi Haruka had stolen your heart completely.
You don’t know when you started having feelings for Haruka, but you can’t imagine a world without him. It sounds cliché, like it came out of a crappy Lifetime movie, but before either of you knew it you had become each other’s confidants. Sharing small touches, talking about your hopes, dreams, and fears, sneaking kisses in your room. By the time you reached high school, you both confessed. At the same time. You could always read his mind and he could read you like a book. It was as if you were two halves of the same whole, inseparable and bound by an unbreakable bond.
He’s your sun.
Just as you were finished packing and about to stand up, two soft hands covered your eyes and the scent of sweet cologne made you smile.
“Guess who~?” called a voice, a slight mischievous giggle practically giving him away.
You feigned a gasp. “Oh woah! Who could it be?”
You formed a mischievous plan of your own. Time for your favorite activity: teasing your boyfriend.
You hummed. “Judging by the six rings on each hand, it must be Kuro-kun!”
“Bzzt! Wrong!” said the voice. You could tell he was pouting slightly. “You better be joking! Try again!”
“Of course I’m joking!”
“Then, guess my name!” the voice said cheerfully.
“Hmm~, is it… Lina-chan?”
“Wrong again!”
“Oh! I got it now! This is definitely Kou-kun!”
“Nuh-uh!”
“Totally gotta be Haru.”
“Noooo~!!”
“Well, with whining like that, it must be Tsumiko-kun!”
“N/N-chaaaaaan~!”
You couldn’t hold back your laughter. Teasing Haruka was not only easy, but incredibly funny. Even with his fingers and rings pressed to your eyes, you could tell he was pouting up a storm. You tenderly stroked his fingers and laughed again in feigned revelation.
“Oooh! It’s you, Haruka~.” You removed his hands from your eyes and looked up at him with a smile. “I knew it was you.”
Staring up at your boyfriend, you could clearly see that you were right and he was pouting super hard. You kissed his hand and his pout melted into a silly grin. Yet, his eyes still held a grudge.
“N/N-chan! That was really mean…” he pouted. “You shouldn’t call your boyfriend another guy’s name.”
You giggled, leaning forward in your seat. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t help it. You’re just too cute when I tease you.”
Haruka blushed. You finished packing up your things and stood up from your chair. You grabbed Haruka’s hand. “Come on, let’s go home.”
Haruka smiled. We could. Or…” He bumped your shoulder playfully. “I can take you somewhere awesome!”
You raised an eyebrow quizzically. “Somewhere awesome, huh? And where would that be?”
Haruka smiled and gave your hand a slight tug. “It’s a surprise! It’s also close to the station so afterwards we can go home together.”
“Haruka, we’ve been going home together since primary school.”
“That’s not the point!” he huffed playfully. “Besides, today is super duper special!”
“Really?” you asked. “What’s today?”
“Today is…” he paused for dramatic effect, making you roll your eyes in the process. “Our 100 Day Anniversary!!”
Ah, of course. How could you forget?
Anniversaries were nothing new in this relationship. Especially when it came to Haruka. He celebrates everything. Friendiversaries, childhood traditions, milestones, etc.. Ever since you two started dating, he’s even added monthly anniversaries to the list. You didn’t mind it. Every milestone, tradition, and anniversary with Haruka made your heart skip a beat and cherish those memories even more.
“Wow. Today is special.” you smiled, opening the classroom door. “Well, let’s get going before we get scolded. I wanna see this super awesome place. If Haruka likes it, it must be good!”
Haruka smiled brightly and With his hand in yours, you left school and you couldn't help but feel a flutter of excitement in your chest.
*****
“And then, Sensei blabbed for an hour about how I should be paying attention…” Haruka complained. “It’s not my fault I always fall asleep in his class… if he wasn’t so boring…”
As you walked through the bustling streets, you both talked about things going on with friends and school. Of course, Haruka vented to you about how he fell asleep twice in class. You chuckled.
“Hmm… if only someone had listened to my advice and not stayed up playing otome games all night.” you hummed.
“Dreamhunter has an event that allows you to collect 12 SSR cards, each with unique date timelines and rare CG’s and I’m supposed to pass on that?!”
You laughed. “Oh, I’m sure your waifus and husbandos appreciate your determination. Maybe they can help you next time you need to study for an exam.”
“Noooo~. I want N/N-chan’s help!”
“Then, you better stay awake. We're in our 3rd year now. If we wanna get into the same university, we gotta work hard.”
Eventually, you arrived at a quaint little building that immediately caught your attention. Your eyes widened and Haruka smiled brightly. “We’re finally here!”
Nestled on a charming trendy street, the light pink café exuded an inviting aura from the moment you laid eyes on it. A sleek LED sign adorned with whimsical paw prints and the café's name, "NyaNyuBo," hung above the entrance, imitating a slow glow in the afternoon sun. Flower boxes overflowed with vibrant strawflowers and multi-colored milkweeds, adding a burst of color to the café's exterior. A few white wrought-iron tables and chairs sat beneath the pink and white canopy, inviting customers to indulge in a garden party aesthetic.
The windows were adorned with hand-painted murals of playful kittens, each with a unique personality showing. Posters are also put up showcasing deals and kitten mascots advertising discounts. A chalkboard easel stood by the door, displaying daily specials and cat puns in colorful chalk lettering.
“Is this… a cat café?” you ask, looking over at your beaming boyfriend.
“Yes! Isn’t it adorable? I saw a bunch of influencers post about it on Twitter and Instagram! And I immediately thought of you! I know how much you love cats and I wanted to make our 100 day anniversary extra special!” Haruka grinned, his eyes lit with joy.
Entering the café, you had to stop yourself from making a scene. The interior was just as cute as the outside.
You were greeted by the warm aroma of freshly brewed coffee, sweet bubbly fragrances of bubble tea, and the soft sound of purring and tiny meows. The interior of the café was a cozy haven, with soft pastel armchairs and plush sofas with low coffee tables, decorated with scented candles and tiny plants, arranged near the walls and windows, creating intimate seating areas perfect for relaxation. In the center of the café were wooden tables and chairs, each with decorations and cards about each of the cats. Some of the tables had cats declare the tables to be theirs as they stretched and laid across.
The afternoon sunlight streamed in through the bay windows, casting a golden glow over the room and illuminating the mellow decor and sleepy kittens. Shelves lined with books and manga and knick-knacks adorned the walls, while potted plants mounted to the walls and roof.
You and Haruka walked to a table and you basked in the cute little cards and small mason jars full of delectable treats shaped like cats and adorned with adorable edible decorations. On the card it read: ‘Please do not feed our kittens any human food. While we work hard to provide our customers with delicious food and use ingredients that both humans and animals can eat, some of our kitties' tummies might not agree. So please, feed them a couple homemade kitty treats that help them stay happy and healthy.’
You gazed lovingly at the jar of treats for the cats. They’re shaped like kitten faces with “frosting” faces of different cats.
‘Super cute!!’
You were snapped out of your thoughts as Haruka handed you a menu. You tenderly grabbed it and let out a gasp immediately after opening it.
“Everything is so cute! The sandwiches, burgers, curry – they’re all shaped like cats! Even the donuts, macarons, and ice cream parfait have 3D art! I’m in heaven~!”
Haruka giggled. “Me too! It’s like a cozy cat heaven. I wanna live here.”
“Me too!” you sigh. “I’ve been in this area so many times and I never knew there was a cat café here. Was it always a café?”
“I don’t think so. We passed by this building so many times, but I never noticed what it was originally.” Haruka reflected. “Anyway, have you decided what you want?”
You nod. “I’ll have the Smoked Salmon Baguette Sandwich and a strawberry boba tea.”
Haruka nodded and left to go place your order at the front counter. The counter was adorned with even more cat-themed decor and accessories for customers. Behind it, baristas bustled about, preparing steaming cups of coffee and boba tea and artfully crafted cat-themed desserts. Behind the baristas, you saw a small window leading to the kitchen where the chefs were working equally as hard.
You took the time to really look around the café, soaking in the mellow and chill vibe. In one corner of the café, you noticed a towering cat tree where 3 cats slept and played with the dangling toys affixed to it. You looked down at the floor and noticed colorful cat toys littered about and a few customers on the floor completely immersed in playing with the kittens.
You sat back in your chair and listened to the soft k-ballad instrumental music playing in the background and customers chattering quietly amongst themselves, their laughter mingling with the gentle purring of the resident cats.
‘I’m so grateful for Haruka.’ you thought to yourself. ‘He really knows me throughout. If I hadn’t met him…’ You felt a pang in your chest at the thought.
Soon, Haruka came back with the drinks and sat down with a sly grin. “They said our food will be out shortly.” he informed you, giving you your drink. It was even cuter in person. A smiling white cat sat atop of your boba and you felt conflicted about drinking it. “Soooo, in the meantime, I bought us these!” He pulled out two cat ear headbands, one cinnamon and one chocolate brown. He handed you the cinnamon colored cat ears and put on the chocolate brown cat ears with a huge smile. “So we can blend in!”
You stared at him for a few seconds before laughing. “You are such a weirdo!” You laughed even harder as Haruka put on the cat ears and striked various poses.
“Come on~! Put it on!” he urged.
“Alright, alright.” you sighed. Swallowing your pride and cringe, you put on the cat ears and posed awkwardly using your hands as paws. “How do I look?”
Haruka’s face exploded into a plume of red and dramatically clutched his chest. “Too cute! My heart… ah!” Just as quickly, he pulled out his phone. “Give me a little ‘nya~’!”
“Pfft-! What?” you giggled, covering your face.
“Y’know… Nya~!”
You laughed again. “No way! I’d die of cringe.”
“Boo~!” he pouted, putting his phone away. “You should take more advantage of your cuteness!”
You rolled your eyes playfully. “Right back at you, babe.”
After a bit more back and forth teasing, a waiter comes by with your food. With a smile, she sets your food down and bows, telling you to enjoy your food.
Your eyes widen and you immediately salivate at the delicious and gorgeous food in front of you.
“This looks amazing!” you exclaim. You took a whiff. “And it smells sooo heavenly~.”
Haruka nodded eagerly. “For real! Ah! Wait!” He scrambled to pull out his phone. “We gotta get a pic!”
After your boyfriend took a few pics, you two finally chow down.
*****
“…and it was really smelly too!”
“Oh my god! Did you say that to his face?”
“I had to! I’m telling you, it was disgusting-”
Your words are cut off as you feel a tiny ball of fur leap onto your lap. Pulling back a little, you look down and see the most adorable munchkin kitten with cream coating looking up at you. You let out a short, high-pitched squeal/gasp, drop your food on your plate, and scooped up the fluffy kitten.
“Ohmigosh! Haruka! Look at the baby~!” you cooed, showering the kitten in affection and holding it like a porcelain doll.
Haruka’s laughter filled the air as he cooed along with you. “Wow~! They’re so tiny. They must be a baby baby.”
You placed the kitten gently on your lap and bombarded the cutie with scritches along its back and behind the ears. Melting in your chair as you heard tiny purrs coming from the kitten.
Haruka stared at you. “You really love cats, huh?”
You nod fervently, unable to tear your gaze away from the adorable creature, making cute kissy noises and baby talking the kitten.
Haruka soon pouted from the lack of attention. “Baby~. Shouldn’t you be paying attention to your kitten right here?” he whined.
You looked up to see your boyfriend pointing at himself, pulling out his infamous puppy eyes. You giggled.
“Then maybe you should be the one on my lap, hm~?”
Haruka, not expecting such bold words, blushed bright red and struggled to find a flirt back. You laugh again.
Your attention is brought back to the kitten that is actively trying, and failing, to jump on the table. Its little pink beans were desperately pawing at your plate, gazing hungrily at your salmon baguette sandwich.
“Aww~. Is the baby hungry?” you ask. You pick out a piece of salmon and dab your napkin on it to get rid of any of the dressing on it. You bring it towards the kitten's mouth and it eagerly devours it, letting out small little mews and purrs all the while. “Wow. You were hungry, huh?”
Haruka giggles and gushes along with you at the kitten’s eating noises. “The staff probably keep the kittens on a strict kitten food routine. This is probably its first time eating human food.” he whispered, looking around the staff. “You shouldn’t give them anymore. I don’t wanna get kicked out because my love is a rule breaker.” he winked in a teasing tone.
You agreed, turning your attention back to your food and boyfriend as the happy kitten nestles in your lap.
After you both finished your food, Haruka led you to the open cat play area, where you spent the afternoon surrounded by playful and curious kitties. Haruka's boundless energy matched that of the kittens as he chased after them, played with various toys, and sprawled on the floor dramatically meowing. You never laughed this hard.
“I’m glad you brought me here.” you sigh fondly. “This is the best date ever.”
“Is it in the top 5?”
“It’s first place.” You leaned against him, foreheads touching. Under the soft glow of the café's lights, you and Haruka found yourselves drawn into a tender moment, your gazes locked in a silent exchange of affection.
“I love you.” he whispered.
“I love you too.” you whispered back, smiling.
His warm hand cupped your cheek and his breath mingled with yours. Time seemed to stop as your lips met in a sweet, lingering kiss – a slow and gentle kiss that made your heart pound in your ears. In that moment, you wanted this moment, right now, to last forever. And as you both pull away, your foreheads resting against each other, you sigh blissfully unaware of how much time has passed in the tender embrace of your boyfriend.
Peeking from your eyelashes, you notice the warm orange glow flowing from the windows.
“Oh woah it’s that late already?” you whisper in awe.
“What~?” Haruka whined. “Noooo~! I wanna stay here longer! With you and the kitties!” He flopped on the floor dramatically with a pitiful cry. You laughed and rubbed his chest.
“Come on. If we don’t go home quickly, auntie will get worried and scold you for hours.”
Haruka pouted, but reluctantly stood up and went to the front to pay for the meal. You giggled quietly at his silliness when you felt a small fur ball brush up against you. It was the baby that jumped on your lap. You picked up the kitten, giving into the cuteness. You then felt a pang in your heart at the thought of leaving it here. The more the kitten purred against you, the more you felt the urge to stuff the kitten down your shirt and run out the door. But, you wouldn’t do that.
“Okay, baby. Let’s–”
“Excuse me!” You called out to the employee behind the counter. “Could I see an adoption application?”
The female employee behind the counter smiled brightly and clapped her hands. “Yes, of course! Would you be adopting that kitten you're holding?”
You nodded. “Yes. Does that application process take long?”
“Of course not. Please wait right here. I bring you the adoption paper and a kitten goodie bag full of essentials and a carrier.”
“Thank you!” The employee left towards the back and you softly squealed at your decision.
“Are you really going to adopt the kitten?” Haruka asked, just as excited as you are.
You nodded gleefully, covering your new kitten in kisses. “Of course! Look at this baby! It was love at first sight.”
“Hey~! No fair! I want kisses too!” Haruka whined, puckering his lips towards your face. You laughed, trying to maneuver out of his way.
“You’ve been getting kisses all day! Learn to share, Haruka.”
“Huuh??? No way! I don’t wanna share N/N-chan!”
“Too bad~.” you teased.
*****
The sun had dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of deep purple and soft pink as you both stepped out of the train station. As you and Haruka began your walk home, the streets were quiet with only the sounds of cicadas buzzing in the trees,the sidewalk illuminated by the gentle glow of street lamps. The cool evening breeze rustled the leaves, creating a soothing spring aesthetic that accompanied your footsteps.
You walked with a skip in your step, smiling in content, holding hands with your boyfriend and holding the cat carrier that held your new family member: Naoko or Nao for short.
You smiled down at the kitten curled up in the transparent carrier. “We’re almost home, Nao.”
Haruka glanced over, a soft smile playing on his lips. "Look at her. Already so comfortable with us."
You gazed down at the sleeping kitten, your heart swelling with affection. "I know right~? She's soooo adorable. I can't wait to get home and set up a little space for her with the stuff they gave us. She’s going to love it. I’m gonna make her the best meal she’s ever had in her tiny life!"
Haruka pumped his arm, flailing around Nao’s bag of essentials. "I've already got a bunch of ideas! We could set up a cozy, extra fluffy bed for her by the window so I can see her from my window, and maybe get some of those climbing trees. And a bunch of toys that she’ll be buried in! She'll have so much fun!"
You laugh softly, bouncing off his enthusiasm. “You’re gonna spoil her rotten, aren’t you?”
He winked playfully. “Absolutely! Anything for Nao! She’s our little princess!”
“Woah. Little princess, huh?” you hummed melodically. “I think I just caught a glimpse of Haruka being a lovesick dad.”
“D-Dad?!” he sputtered, his cheeks turning red.
“Yeah. I think you’d be an amazing dad, Haruka.” you stated, smiling nonchalantly.
“W-W-W-Whaaat?!” Haruka yelped, stuttering and getting even redder. “Y/N! It’s too early for us to be thinking about that! We haven’t even graduated yet! A-And I don’t have a job! You also have to be married before thinking about that stuff! We shouldn’t rush things!”
“Huh? What’re you talking about? I’m talking about the future.”
“H-Huh? O-Oh, yeah! That’s what I meant! Yeah! Totally!” he stammered, avoiding your eyes.
“Hmm~? Were you thinking of making a family right now?”
“N-No! Of course not!” He whipped his head away from you, hiding his face.
“Are you sure~? You’re blushing a lot, Ha-ru-ka-chan~.”
“Noooo~…”
“Tonight would be the most romantic day to propose, Haruka. Should I be expecting something soon?”
“N/N… please… I didn’t say anything… please stop…” he mumbled.
You laughed and decided to put a hold on the teasing to save the reputation of your boyfriend. After a few minutes of walking in comfort silence, you turned onto your street and approached your house first. You turned to your boyfriend with a smile.
“Thank you for the amazing date, Haruka. Today has been perfect. Every anniversary you always seem to one-up the dates every single time.”
“Of course, angel~. You deserve only the best.” He pressed a gentle kiss on your lips and you melt into his arms, humming in serenity. As he pulled away, he turned to walk towards his house, but you didn’t let go of his hand. You turned back, looking back at you in confusion.
“Y/N?”
“Oh, did you think you were sleeping somewhere else tonight? Absolutely not. Stay the night.”
“E-Eh? Stay the night? B-But…” He peeked at your house.
“My parents are out of town for the weekend. It’ll just be us.”
“W-What?! Really?”
“Yeah! Plus, the baby will be sad if you go home.” You raised the carrier to show the kitten, slowing waking up from its nap. “And it’s not like we haven’t slept over at each other’s houses before. It’ll be like a sleepover!”
“Oh yeah! It’s been awhile.” he noted. “Yeah, okay! I’ll have to get some stuff from my house and tell mom that I’ll be staying over tonight.” He peeked down at Nao. “And it’ll give me some quality time with NaoNao~.”
As you both walked up the pathway to the house, you smiled. “Yeah, and with Nao here, we can play house.”
“Play house?”
“Yeah. You, me, and the baby.”
Haruka’s face erupted in blush and stammered a nonsense string of words as you led him into the house, laughing at his whinings.
Rancorous Romance
Boba x fem!reader, established relationship fluff/ flirting, smut
TW: 1x use of “daddy”
***
Boba smiled. You had messaged him randomly, midday. It was midnight and you were still chatting. Laying in bed alone, he didn’t feel lonely.
Currently, you were gossiping about Din’s love life. You both suspected he had someone special, but he would admit nothing.
-I wonder who it is. Maybe it’s that new guy?- You were intent on figuring it out.
Boba considered. -Nah, I think it’s that pretty Twi’lek he’s been hanging around recently.-
-Oh. So she’s pretty. Hmm..-
-Not as pretty as you are-
-That’s more like it-
Boba smiled to himself as he typed his reply. -Still coming home tomorrow?-
-Yeah. Miss u-
He sighed. You were only a short trip away, at a spa with Fennec having a girls’ weekend. But it felt like light years. He tried to not be clingy. -Cool. Just checking. I have to kick my other girlfriend out before you get back-
-lol So funny…-
Boba smiled again. He couldn’t wait for you to be safely home again. Being with Fennec, he knew you were safe already, but he worried slightly nonetheless. -It’s my charm that keeps you around-
-haha.. babe you’re selling yourself short, it’s also cuz you got a huge c0ck- You teased.
He laughed. -well that too, ofc-
-g’night babe… im tired from all this relaxing I’ve been doing. C u soon 😘-
He debated whether or not to include an emoji in his reply. Finally, he typed -ok-
-miss u- He added, still conflicted. He was bad at showing his feelings.
He sighed, and put his device down. Time to try to sleep, without you by his side. He laid awake for awhile, missing you.
***
You shimmied up to him in a slinky dress. Your skin was glowing and healthy looking. He licked his lips subconsciously. Fennec smirked at him from behind you.
“You both look… like you spent a lot money at the spa.” He raised an eyebrow. You and Fennec laughed as if you were sharing an inside joke. He felt suspicious.
“We did alright.” Fennec breezed past him. You hung back, looking like you were waiting for something. Boba tilted his head curiously. “Well, where’s my welcome home kiss?” You simpered.
Smiling, he took you in his arms and kissed you hard. When he pulled away, you were breathless. “More…” you cooed, wrapping your arms around his neck.
He put his gloved hands on your bare back. You felt the warm leather run along your skin. It made you shiver in anticipation. “Soon, love…” Boba purred, his hands coming to rest on your hips. He kissed your cheek softly, then turned, pulling you gently along. “Come, I have a surprise for you…” He wrapped his arm around your waist possessively.
The two of you walked slowly down several long corridors, enjoying each other’s company. Finally, you realized where you were headed. You guessed what your surprise might be. You had been asking for an animal companion. You guessed it was a bantha. But you decided to play dumb.
“Where we headed?” You leaned into Boba’s strong body.
He seemed pleased, “Don’t worry; we’ll be there soon.”
Smiling to yourself, you asked, “Is your other girlfriend gone yet?”
Boba rumbled a laugh. “Yeah I thought it best, you know you would kick her ass.” He squeezed you affectionately.
You giggled softly, flattered. “I’d kick your ass.”
Boba laughed again, “I guess you probably would.”
You wrapped both arms around him and leaned into him. “I might as well carry you, the way you’re leaning on me…” He sounded pleased again.
“I mean, if you insist…” you invited. Without breaking his gait, he swung you up into his arms. You immediately pecked a kiss onto his cheek. He tried not to smile. You bit your lip slightly, amused and happy. He carried you down the corridor as if you weighed nothing.
Suddenly, he stopped. You had arrived. You heard Boba’s rancor. It was whickering strangely.
“Is she okay?” You looked into Boba’s face. He seemed carefree.
“She has been acting a little weird, but I think that’s just because of your Surprise…” He set you down gently. You furrowed your brow, confused. He put a finger to your chin. Smiling, you closed your eyes as he leaned in to kiss you lightly.
A tiny growl sounded. That was new.
“What’s that?”
Boba smiled broadly, despite himself. You made a dubious face. He continued to smile, and grabbed your hand. Pulling you along, he led you into the stables. The rancor on the left stuck its large nose to the gate. It snuffled at Boba. He cooed baby talk at it, briefly distracted. You watched, full of warm emotions.
The rancor on the right whimpered sadly. Wait — the rancor on the right? You spun around, shocked. Another rancor? You sputtered your amazement. Boba came up behind you. “I know how much you love animals, especially big smelly ones like rancors. So I found him - the runt of the litter. Very small and sickly. But we can help him. You can help him.”
You started to cry. You wanted to make your new baby feel better. He shushed you, “Shh… let’s go inside his pen and he can finally meet you. He’s ready to bond with his person. It’ll help him relax and feel safe.”
You stepped inside, shaking slightly. Boba calmly walked up to the small rancor, and patted him on the head. You drew nearer. Boba held out his hand, and you took it. He placed your hand on the rancor’s warm, sticky nose. It sniffed you, curious. You spoke softly, trying to soothe him with your voice. He shuddered and whimpered again.
Boba grabbed you and positioned you directly in front of the rancor. He walked around to the side of its head and began to undo the blindfold. You gulped. Would the baby accept you?
The blindfold came away. The baby blinked slowly, timidly. His eyes adjusted and he looked into yours. You knew right away. Everything was going to be fine. Better than that. You approached the rancor and, smiling, kissed him between the eyes. He rumbled softly, happily. You sat down next to him and gave him scritches on the side of his head. Your baby rancor purred and half closed his eyes, content. Boba sat down on your other side. “See, he just needed to meet you.”
The rancor snuffled again. “He’s on medication; with that and love he’s gonna be fine,” Boba reassured. You turned and kissed Boba’s cheek.
“Oh, I still get kisses too?” He teased.
“Only after the Baby,” you sassed.
Boba tried to contain another smile. It made you smile, and you leaned in to kiss him. He pulled you into his lap and deepened the kiss for a moment. Your Baby made a soft whistling noise. Concerned, you both looked over at him. His eyes were closed and he was drooling slightly, asleep.
“Let’s let him sleep,” Boba said quietly. You carefully stood and exited the pen.
As soon as you were outside and Boba’s rancor saw him, it started a fuss. “Is she jealous?” You asked.
“Hmm, maybe,” Boba rushed over to her. Soothing her, he turned back to you, “Maybe we should give her some attention. Want to go for a ride?”
You grinned, giddy, “Duh.”
Boba smiled, “Let’s get you out of that dress and into something more appropriate for the occasion…” He looked you up and down.
Smirking, you walked towards him, “Can you help me?”
“I insist, in fact…” his tone was teasing, but his eyes were lustful. When you reached him, he pulled you into a tight embrace. You wrapped your arms around his neck. Kissing him, you smooshed yourself against him. His rancor sniffled. “Oh, don’t be jealous,” Boba said over his shoulder to her.
Feeling mischievous, you backed up and pulled Boba along until you reached a small alcove next to an empty pen. “Whatever are we going to do here?” Boba’s hands were all over you. You coyly undid the single clasp that kept the dress on your body. It slid off you to the floor.
“Hmmm…” Boba eyed you appreciatively. You backed into the wall and pulled him close. Then you took his hands and directed him to where you wanted him to touch you. His warm gloved hands drug over your skin tantalizingly.
Finally, he could take no more teasing. Growling, he grabbed your ass and hoisted you up so that you were sandwiched between the wall and his body. He kissed down your throat, his mouth hot and his teeth gently raking along your collar bone.
You cooed to him as he undid his clothing. “You wanna see how much I missed you?” He asked, voice low.
“Ooh, the great Daimyo Boba Fett missed lil ole me?” You teased.
He hmphed, “You know I love you…” He kissed your lips as your heart jumped. He rarely said such emotionally open things. “Show me, then,” you said when he pulled away. He held back a smile and repositioned so his hips were between your thighs. “I couldn’t sleep last night, without you… I missed your snoring.”
You burst out laughing, “I do not do that!”
Boba huffed in amusement before kissing you hard. “No, it’s true.” He kissed down your throat again, “But I don’t mind.” His hands grabbed your legs, pulling them further apart. Before you could defend yourself further, he thrust into you, making your head loll back.
“How come you gotta make me miss you so much?” Boba set an achingly slow pace. “Say you’re sorry,” he pulled out, making you whimper.
“S-sorry daddy,” you mumbled, wrapping your legs around him in an attempt to get him to penetrate you again.
“Say it like you mean it,” he resisted easily. Moaning his name, you pleaded and begged, squirming against his body.
“Hmmm, that’s pretty good,” Boba relented, plunging back into your pussy. The feeling of his body holding you in place while he stroked you drove you crazy.
“Baby, you feel so good,” you cooed, pulling him to yourself.
Boba bit your shoulder lightly as he teased you with his thrusts, making them slow and deliberate. You felt your body tensing up under him, but you couldn’t cum. “Harder, please, you’re killing me,” you begged.
“Hmmm, be my good girl and hold on for me,” he whispered into your ear, his thrusting steady and slow. “Let me show you how much I missed you… how much I need you…”
His hands slid up to grab your chest while he continued to fuck into you slowly. “How much I missed this,” Boba kissed you hard on the mouth while his shaft slid slowly into you. He paused for a second, then finally gave you want you wanted. He fucked into you hard, pinning your arms above your head with one hand while the other held you in place. “Nowcum for me,” he commanded. Your hot pussy finally boiled over and you squirmed and moaned for him.
“Such a good girl, baby you’re perfect,” his gravelly voice was strained.
Feeling faint, you let your head fall back into the cool wall. Boba took the opportunity to kiss up your throat slowly. When he reached your mouth, he kissed you softly. “How come I’m so lucky?” He pulled away to ask.
You smiled and caressed his face. Boba’s rancor whined loudly. You both smiled. “Well we have you out of your clothing… now we just need to get you into something else, so we don’t keep her waiting any longer.” He pulled you forward and lifted you up into his arms.
Carrying you down the hallway, he asked, “Should we visit the Tuskens?”
You smiled again. His fondness for the Tuskens was very endearing to you. “Yes, baby, let’s go see them,” you said softly. He grinned. It was good to be together again.
cause & effect || chapter 7
➵ your work friend, kuroo, has a tiny favour to ask. unfortunately, that favour includes convincing his family that you’re very much in love with him and have been for a while now. let’s just say it’s easier than you’d assumed.
warnings: f!reader, mentions of divorce
wc: 5.7k
m.list | ch. 6 ↞ ch. 7 ↠ ch. 8
It’s frustratingly cold as you step out onto the street in the late afternoon, scarf pulled up around your cheeks and gloved hands stuffed in your coat pockets. Sure, it’s a bit stuffy inside a jumper, a jacket, and an outercoat, but it’s what you’ve got to do. It’s the sort of afternoon that you want to spend inside, curled up next to your heater as you throw on a shitty Christmas film. Instead, you’re going to brave the minefield that is your boyfriend’s mother.
Well, not your real boyfriend. But his mother doesn’t know that – and she’s certainly unlikely to be any less critical of you regardless. You’re not sure the whole ‘deceit’ aspect makes it any less stressful. If anything, you feel more pressure to play your part well; for his sake more than anything else.
The reason for this mess is waiting for you, leaning against the nose of his car, dressed in a surprisingly stylish black coat and red scarf. He looks so nonchalant, gazing down the street with the same expression he has when trying to figure out the most appropriate sign-off to a work email.
“Morning,” you yawn, shuffling towards him.
Kuroo grins at you, his nose and cheeks bitten red by the cold.
For how tall and intimidating he looks, he’s got a nice smile.
“You sure you can breathe in all that?” He teases, appraising your winter gear with a playful glint in his eye.
You glare at him, shuffling towards him in all your layered glory.
“Don’t tell me you’re one of those men who likes to brag about how he never gets cold,” you huff, tapping his foot with your own. He doesn’t seem the type to have such a lack of self-awareness, but it’s not impossible that he’d just say something like that to wind you up.
“Nah,” he grins. “I just go for fashion over comfort.”
“You’re doing a terrible job then,” you giggle. Of all the words that come to mind when you think ‘Kuroo Tetsurou’, fashionable is not one of them.
Kuroo places an aghast hand on his chest, the look in his eyes not quite matching up with his slack jaw. “And here I thought we were friends.”
“Aren’t friends supposed to be honest with each other?” You tilt your head to the side with a sparkle in your eyes.
The nervousness bubbling in your stomach is already subsiding. It’s a silly little thing, a bit of meaningless banter on a winter’s morning, but you feel better. Embarrassing, really.
“You wound me,” he chuckles, shaking his head. He stands to his full height, rolling his shoulders. “You ready?”
You nod. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”
Recognition flashes in Kuroo’s eyes, his expression morphing from relaxed to mildly perturbed. “Thanks for doing this, by the way.”
You wave a hand at him before promptly stuffing it back in your pocket. “No problem. Also, I get a free dinner out of it.”
Kuroo raises an eyebrow at you, but his expression softens slightly. Although, you’re not sure it’s enough to ease the guilt he must be feeling.
(“Are you sure?” Kuroo asks, his brow furrowed as he leans across your work cubicle. His voice is quiet, hushed, as though he doesn’t want anyone else to hear. “You really don’t have to come if you don’t want to.”
“You sound like a broken record,” you laugh. It’s true; as surely as the sun rises and sets, Kuroo asks if you’re sure you really want to do this at approximately one in the afternoon. Sometimes at two. “It’s fine,” you smile. “I offered, didn’t I?”)
“Well…” He sighs, turning around and opening the car door. “Ladies first.”
You nod as you slip into the passenger seat. The stale heated air burns the inside of your nose; a sensation you firmly associate with the winter.
Kuroo is quick to join you on the other side, legs a little too long to fit comfortably despite his seat being pushed back quite far. You smile to yourself; he really is a strange mix of all the confidence and debonair of a successful businessman and all the awkwardness of an overgrown child.
The more you think about it, the more it makes sense that he’d be the one to ask this of you. But it’s on your own volition that you sit in his car, about to head off to see his mother.
Maybe this is going overboard. But something about his face while he was on the phone to his mother still bothers you. The panic, the exhaustion, the fear – he’s never acted like that with his dad’s side of the family. Something’s obviously up.
But you’re not sure how to casually mention that in conversation. ‘Oh, hey, I noticed things were kind of tense when you were on the phone to your mother, do you want to talk about it?’ It’s not even your place to pry.
At the very least, you want to support a friend ‘in need’. That feels reasonable enough.
✧ ✧ ✧
The drive is painfully silent.
You try your best to make light conversation, but it’s hard. Kuroo’s too deep in his own head to have a proper discussion. The joviality he’d greeted you with this morning quickly dissipated, replaced by an unusually sombre expression.
He’s never usually this quiet. There’s usually a quip, or perhaps a small observation he’d like to share. Seeing him this quiet, this withdrawn… it’s unusual. Well, for you, at least. Perhaps the Kuroo you knew was just a front, a mask securely fixed on to make workplace relationships run smoothly.
But… you’d like to think you know him better than that by now.
Forty minutes feel like eighty. But thank God it’s over.
He doesn’t even need to announce that you’ve arrived. The palpable air of dread that fills the car is indication enough.
That, and the fact that you’re currently parked in front of what appears to be a very standard house of the upper middle class. It looks rather fancy, with perfectly tended-to hedges and white walls. It almost looks like a show home, albeit a lot smaller.
“You ready?” Kuroo sighs, turning to you with tired eyes.
You nod. “I’m ready to charm the pants off your mum.”
You regret the words before they’ve even left your mouth.
Kuroo snorts. “Really? That’s the turn of phrase you’re going with?”
“I could run off and live a long, loving life with your mother,” you shrug. “You never know, ‘Tetsu’.”
He shakes his head with a smile. “Now that’d be a plot twist.”
“Mhm,” you nod.
Something in your gut wants to linger in the car, to put this off as long as possible. You don’t know what to expect; his father’s side of the family had been a breeze, perhaps even more kind and welcoming than you deserve. But something told you that won’t be the case with his mother.
Kuroo doesn’t knock on the door, nor does he shoot his mother a message. He fishes around in the mailbox and pulls out a pair of keys, reluctantly opening the front door.
You’re dumbstruck by how pristine everything is. It looks as if it’s been cleaned recently; probably in anticipation of your arrival. But you can’t comprehend this place ever being anything less than perfect, though. You can’t envision disorder here, neither in the little hallway or the charming little living room.
There’s something distinctly different about this house. It’s a little cleaner, a little more put together. Where Kuroo’s paternal household seems to revel in its rambunctious sincerity, this one seems more concerned with order.
Everything is where it should be; the design opts for minimalism over sentimentality.
There are still photos on the wall – a gangly, teenaged Kuroo smiling blithely next to a girl who looks a lot like him, a baby you don’t recognise, a group of people you’ve never seen before staring at you with tight smiles…
“We’re here,” Kuroo calls out.
“Yes, dear, I heard the door,” a woman’s voice calls back. Your stomach is tight, wound up like a pocket watch. “Come to the kitchen, would you?”
Kuroo glances at you before complying, shuffling towards the kitchen with the same reluctance as a petulant twelve-year-old boy. You follow, tottering after him as quickly as possible.
The kitchen is just as orderly as the rest of the house; a miracle, given the fact that Kuroo’s mother appears to be making curry.
She’s as tall as you expected her to be. She doesn’t share her son’s penchant for messy hair; instead, she looks like the sort of woman who’d be composed no matter what. She does share her son’s strong jaw and sharp eyes, and it seems like she’d look just as good in a suit.
Suffice to say, you’re even more intimidated.
“Dinner’s ready, Tetsurou,” she sighs, hand on her hip and ladle in hand.
“We just got here,” he blinks, gormless.
“That’s why I told you to arrive at six,” she says.
You and Kuroo exchange a look.
“Thank you for being so prepared,” you say reflexively.
His mother offers you a smile in response. It doesn’t seem insincere, at least.
“Is Akari coming?” Kuroo asks.
You know that name – his sister. She must be the girl in the photos.
“She couldn’t make it,” Kuroo’s mother replies nonchalantly.
You watch Kuroo’s face as it flickers almost imperceptibly with understanding. There’s something like relief in his eyes – but also something like annoyance. Perhaps both.
“And Haruki?”
There’s something to the way Kuroo says that name that sets you on edge.
“He’s working late,” his mother replies with a moment’s delay. Maybe she just took some time to process the question – but there’s enough dead air for you to be suspicious.
That’s when you remember.
(“So, your mum’s remarried?” You ask, tilting your head at him.
Kuroo grimaces on the other side of the table. “Yeah. To a lawyer.”
You chuckle, taking another sip of your lunchtime boba. “I take it that’s a bad thing?”
Kuroo bristles. “Well, he just… I just… we never got along, you know?”
“Ah,” you swallow. Incompatibility with a parent’s new partner is its own minefield, fraught with hurt feelings and expectations. “So, your mum remarried, and you stayed with your dad?”
“Mhm,” he nods. “Mum took Akari.”
“That’s your sister, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Do you talk to her often?” Your gut shifts. Siblings ‘separated’ in a divorce. Fraught allegiances, maybe?
“Yeah,” he takes a sip of his own drink. “I saw her last week.”)
Haruki must be the stepfather.
“I see,” Kuroo murmurs. This time, the look in his eyes is definitely relief.
“Go sit yourselves down,” his mother says, waving a hand at you two. “I’ll bring it out in a second.”
Kuroo obliges quickly, making a beeline for the dining table. You follow in suit, terrified of the prospect of being left alone in the kitchen with his mother. Kuroo pulls out a chair for you and you slide into it, folding your hands in your lap.
Well, the energy here is certainly… different.
Next to you, Kuroo sits with a clenched jaw. The only other time you’ve seen him like this is when dealing with particularly obnoxious sponsors; the ones that’d make even the most calm and patient of your colleagues want to tear their hair out.
But he shouldn’t have to feel like this, should he? It’s his mother’s house. Somewhere that’s supposed to be a home for him. And yet he looks so… so…
You nudge him with your elbow. He turns to you with a start, eyes wide. A smile is all you can offer him, as optimistic and genuine as you can muster.
His eyes soften ever so slightly; and, if you’re not imagining it, you swear you can see the whisper of a smile beginning to form on his own lips.
“Here you go,” his mother chirps, appearing so suddenly you’re not entirely convinced she didn’t just materialise out of smoke.
She sets a plate of curry down in front of you.
It looks gorgeous. Robust, richly coloured, with rice that looks like it’s the perfect consistency… it’s the sort of curry you’d expect to see on an advertisement, or maybe on a delivery app (where the image draws you in, only to leave you deeply disappointed when the real curry shows up looking significantly less appetising).
“Thank you,” you smile at her. Funny that your mood’s suddenly picked up, hm?
“You are most welcome,” his mother chuckles, sitting herself down in her own seat across from the two of you.
The three of you say your thanks before picking up your spoons. If there’s anything you can all agree on, it’s the fact that you want to dig into this curry immediately.
“Have you spoken to your sister recently?” Kuroo’s mother asks, scooping up some rice.
“Uh, yeah,” Kuroo nods, swallowing roughly. “I called her yesterday.”
“Did you tell her about your new girlfriend?”
“Not yet,” he mumbles, cheeks starting to glow.
“Afraid she’ll tease you?”
Kuroo genuinely chuckles at that. “You really think me such a coward?”
“You say that like I’m not also deathly afraid of your sister,” his mother smiles, “she could verbally tear me apart without even breaking a sweat.”
Kuroo’s chuckle becomes a genuine laugh. The sound brings you more relief than you could’ve ever imagined.
Even his mother seems to soften a bit.
She finally looks straight at you, a gentle smile on her face. “I hope it’s to your liking, dear,” she hums.
“Thank you,” you smile back, taking a spoonful of curry. It’s so good – warm and rich, with the sort of texture and flavour you’d expect from a comfort meal. You wonder if her penchant for cooking has passed down to her son.
“I take it’s a success, then?” Kuroo’s mother smiles wryly, tilting her head at you. You blink at her with wide eyes and round cheeks. Had you… done something?
“Don’t tease her,” Kuroo chuckles.
“I’m not teasing,” his mother tuts. “I just pay particular attention when someone’s trying my cooking for the first time.”
A surprisingly comfortable silence settles over the table as everyone tucks into their dinner, taking a moment to enjoy this dish that tastes like a warm hug.
Kuroo’s mother is the picture of smug satisfaction, revelling in the implicit praise of a silent dinner table. Although, you can’t blame her; if you could make a curry this good, you’d surely be acting the same way.
You’re grateful for the silence. Silence means you don’t need to be quick on your feet, trying to weave a realistic story. This woman seems perceptive; more perceptive than you’d like. Where his dad’s side of the family seem to place trust that Kuroo’s telling them the truth, it feels as though his mother would be able to unravel this little pantomime in an instant.
“So how long have you two been together now?” She coos, looking between the two of you with a sly smile.
You look to Kuroo, trying your best to suppress the panic in your eyes. You hadn’t actually asked what the answer to that question would be. Foolish, really.
“It’ll be, uh…” Kuroo clears his throat, raising an eyebrow. “A few months now?”
You nod along, taking another mouthful of curry. Curse the swirling in your gut – this meal deserves to be enjoyed wholly, not forced down during a bout of anxiety.
“And you were working together before this?” She asks.
“Mhm.”
You reach over and take Kuroo’s hand on instinct. Your grip is firm, tense. Kuroo squeezes your hand back. The amount of comfort it gives you is shameful; this isn’t real. He’s just a friend. A colleague.
“Ah,” Kuroo’s mother smiles. “So, it really is a workplace romance.”
The way she says it implies that the fact amuses her. Why? Had she not expected that for her son? Did she look down on a workplace romance? Perhaps some people might find it unprofessional, but… it’s not real. Not that you’d tell her that.
She asks a few more questions; where you’re from, what you like to do, what you studied in university.
You answer as truthfully as you can. The less lies you have to keep track of, the better. And, you hope, it might add some credence to your story – even if part of you worries that his mother might disapprove of you.
Not that it matters. You’ve had more than enough of this ‘method acting’.
The questions slow, although you’re not sure Kuroo’s mother is satiated. There’s a certain glint in her eye as she looks between the two of you.
“So,” she asks, her voice like cream, “when am I getting grandchildren?”
Your face flushes hot. The question isn’t being directed at you – well, not really – but the thought is enough to send you into a mental frenzy. Children? But you’re so young, and they’re a big commitment. There’s so much to think about – schooling, mental wellbeing, financial support—
“Be patient, mother,” Kuroo shakes his head, letting the question roll off his shoulders.
He must get asked this a lot, you think.
“You’re getting on in years, Tetsurou,” his mother purrs.
You resist the urge to frown. If Tetsurou was past his prime, then does that make you an old crone?
“I’m only twenty-four,” Kuroo mumbles. No matter how frequent a question like this, it’s always annoying.
“And?” His mother raises an eyebrow at him.
Kuroo rolls his eyes. You swallow down a laugh with a sip of water.
“And,” Kuroo croons, rolling his head to the side, “I’ve got to focus on my career.” He threads his fingers with yours effortlessly, holding up your clasped hands for your mother to see. “And so does she.”
Your heart is pounding now, blood thrumming in your ears. If none of your words are enough to convince his mother that this is ‘real’, then surely your darkening cheeks must do the trick.
“Well now,” his mother coos, “seems like you’ve got it all worked out.”
Something’s off. It’s in the way Kuroo’s mother looks at him. In the weight of the silence that’s engulfed you. In the way he squeezes your hand a little tighter.
You’re missing something. You can feel it in your gut. There’s an important piece of information you’re not privy to, or perhaps a part of Kuroo’s personal history that you haven’t been told.
Regardless of what it is, Kuroo and his mother seem to be having a silent war over it.
“I never asked,” you cut in, desperate to bring an end to this tension, “but what do you do for work?”
Kuroo’s mother blinks at you for a moment, as if she hasn’t quite processed what you’ve asked. “Oh, I’m a teacher.”
“What grade?” You ask. If you keep this ball rolling, then maybe you’ll all survive the evening.
“Middle school,” she nods, “although truth be told, I feel like I should’ve gone for elementary.”
“Why?” You smile. “Are the pre-teens too hormonal?”
Kuroo’s mother sighs, sitting back in her chair. “You wouldn’t believe how foolish some of those children can be.”
“Tell her about those boys who tried to make a flamethrower during chemistry,” Kuroo chuckles. He’s smiling, but he still looks beleaguered.
“Oh my God,” his mother groans. You worry for a moment; is she mad? Upset? Embarrassed?
None of those, apparently. She launches right into the story, complete with hand gestures.
You laugh along. Next to you, Kuroo’s shoulders slump a bit.
It may not be a victory, but the energy in the room has definitely shifted. You’ve got something to talk about. That’s one problem out of the way.
All you want to focus on now is getting Kuroo through the rest of the evening.
✧ ✧ ✧
A few more hours of idle yet painful conversation maintained primarily by you, and you’re ushered off to bed. It’s barely even nine thirty, but you’re ready to pass out and stay comatose until the morning. And an early rise means you can leave even earlier.
You’re not sure what to make of this place. There’s love here. You’re sure of it. And you think Kuroo’s aware of it, too.
But it’s a different kind of love; one that’s shaped differently, that’s taken on a distinct pallor. A certain distance, maybe? Love expressing itself primarily as nagging concern – something that often doesn’t feel much like love at all. It’s a kind of love that’s difficult to swallow, one that makes you want to push someone away rather than seek them out.
But you can’t be sure of anything. You only know so much. And quite frankly, your head is starting to hurt from all the thinking and worrying.
The room you’ve been relegated is Kuroo’s old bedroom, but you wouldn’t have guessed. There’s not much of him here; a few Shounen Jump’s here and there, a dusty volleyball sitting on the bookshelf next to a cheap-looking cat trinket.
There’s not much to imply that a teenage boy ever lived here, let alone a working adult. You wonder, briefly, how often Kuroo comes to visit. You can’t imagine he stays long.
The man in question looks far too big for this place, anyway. Even the double bed shoved up against the wall doesn’t look long enough to fit his entire body.
Unfortunately, it’s the only acceptable place to sleep in the room. There’s not even a couch for you to lie on, or even a spare futon.
Maybe you should’ve thought of this before agreeing to visit his mother for the evening.
But it’s too late now; the two of you are stationed on opposite sides of the room, both uncomfortably aware of the fact that there is, believe it or not, only one bed. You’re not against the idea of sharing a bed, even if for one night, but the prospect still feels… strange. Embarrassing, even.
Kuroo clears his throat, taking another perfunctory look around the room.
“I’ll just sleep on the floor,” he says, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Oh, no, I—”
“I dragged you into this,” he smiles. “It’s the least I can do.”
You open your mouth to protest, but he’s already leaving the room. The door swings shut behind him softly, leaving just the slightest crack.
You take a quick moment to change in your pyjamas, sitting yourself down on the bed with a sigh.
There’s no way this whole charade wasn’t going to have its uncomfortable moments. You were well-aware of that when you’d entered into it. But it has certainly thrown you some curveballs. If you’d asked yourself three months ago if you’d thought you’d end up sitting on a bed in a stranger’s house, after what was perhaps the most uncomfortable dinner of your life, waiting for your fake boyfriend to return as he sought out a blanket so he could sleep on the floor, you would’ve thought you were quite mental.
But you don’t mind. The thought of Kuroo having to go through this on his own, being lambasted with questions about why he hasn’t settled down and why he isn’t expecting a child… That must be frustrating to bear solo.
You hear voices in the hallway. His mother.
“Oh, she gets cold at night,” you hear Kuroo say, “so we usually use two blankets.”
His mother tsks. “That sounds rather high maintenance.”
Your stomach twists a little at that. So, you didn’t succeed. As soon as you’re out of sight, the façade drops.
“God forbid she gets cold,” Kuroo mumbles.
There’s an awkward pause. Somehow, the silence feels more honest. Like both Kuroo and his mother can talk with no holds barred without you there. Seems there’s a lot you still don’t know.
“I just think the two of you don’t have much chemistry.”
The words jolt through you. It’s not real. Your relationship isn’t real. But for some reasons, those words sting. Is it because they mean you’ve failed to do your job well? You were supposed to be helping Kuroo get his mother off his back, not give her more things to pick at him for.
“Excuse me?” Even Kuroo sounds frustrated.
“She’s no Ritsuko.”
It’s the way she says the word that betrays its relevance.
The silence that follows is pregnant with tension.
Ritsuko must be an ex. But that’s none of your business. He’s not your real boyfriend.
“I don’t want her to be Ritsuko.”
You’ve never heard Kuroo’s voice like that. It’s sharp, tight, unfamiliar.
“I still think you made a mistake, Tetsurou.”
“Would you just drop it?” There’s an edge to his tone, like his voice is armed with a kind of sharpness that people don’t tend to direct towards their parents.
“Well, you know what they say,” his mother sighs, a familiar kind of parental condescension in her voice. “Mother knows best.”
“If you want me to respect your choices, then you have to respect mine.”
Those words seem to strike her silent, the only sound the thumping of feet along the hallway.
The light of the hallway spills into the room as Kuroo pushes the bedroom door open, scowl on his face and blanket in hand.
You sit up a little straighter.
Should you say something? Were you supposed to have heard that? It seemed intense…
“Can I have a pillow?” He asks. The edge in his voice is gone as he turns to you, the resentment in his face replaced with exhaustion.
“Sure.” You reach behind you and grab one of the pillows, passing it to him.
“Thanks,” he sighs.
He pays you no mind as he starts preparing his ‘bed’ half a step away from you, tossing the blanket on the floor haphazardly. His back is turned, but you don’t need to see his face to know he’s scowling.
“Hey, Kuroo?”
“Hm?”
“Are you okay?” You ask gently.
He sighs, his shoulders sinking. “It’s fine. Don’t worry about me.”
It’s almost comical, how ineffective that request is.
You reach out and take his hand. You’re not sure why; it’s instinct, more than anything.
But Kuroo turns around and looks at you, his eyes wide. The expression makes him look a few years younger, confused and hopeful.
“I’m willing to listen, if you need it.” Your voice is so, so quiet. Is it the right thing to do? Is this what he wants to hear? It’s hard to say. All you know is that he doesn’t deserve to go to bed in such a foul mood.
Kuroo swallows roughly, still staring at you. His hand tightens around yours. His palm feels rough; was that due to the years of volleyball?
He sighs, sitting himself next to you on the bed and leaning back against the wall. He’s still holding your hand.
“It’s just…” His voice is delicate; perhaps even childlike. “Every time I come here, it feels like I’m fourteen again.”
You nod. It’s easy enough to understand – and you’re sure a lot of people feel similarly – but…
“Why?”
Kuroo blinks rapidly for a moment, closing his eyes. “It’s like… any progress I’ve made is dashed, and I’m back to square one.”
“What do you mean?” You rack your brain for any idea of what he could be talking about. Kuroo’s always seemed so secure, so stable. Even when he doesn’t know what he’s doing, he goes at it with such confidence that it makes you feel like he’s got it all under control.
But that’s Kuroo at work.
It seems that his private life was an entirely different stadium – one he can’t navigate so smoothly.
He opens his eyes and looks at you.
There’s a lot he wants to say. You can see it in his eyes. Yet something seems to hold him back.
“I have a hard time letting people in,” he admits.
“Really?” That surprises you. And yet, it doesn’t.
Kuroo is the perfect picture of cordiality, with an enviable ability to get along with most people he meets. He’d been lavished with praise for it at work numerous times.
But cordial doesn’t mean vulnerable. And now you think about it, you can’t quite imagine him letting his walls down all that often.
“Mhm,” he nods. “I… struggle with being vulnerable.”
You nod slowly. The ‘shape’ of Kuroo becoming clearer in the fog. “If you don’t mind me asking… why?”
Kuroo drags his bottom lip through his teeth for a moment, deep in thought. “I think it’s because I’m afraid I’ll get left behind.”
It startles you. The honesty.
Maybe it’s because you’ve just been talking about vulnerability. Or maybe it’s because you’d given him the platform he needed tonight. But you couldn’t have prepared for the weight of those words, nor the way he said them.
“Kuroo…” You murmur. You’re not sure what there is to say. All you know is that you feel that, too. Maybe less intensely than him, but you understand.
“That, or I’ll break someone’s heart,” he sighs, running his hand spare hand down his face. “Every time I’m here, mum grills me about being single. Every damn time. And she likes to bring up…”
He trails off. You can make a good guess of what the rest of that sentence might be.
Ritsuko. It’s not your place to ask; but you can’t help but be concerned for him.
You let the silence sit for a moment. This conversation is for him – it’s his choice what you do and don’t discuss. Who knows, maybe asking about this Ritsuko would just bring him more distress.
“Mum really wants grandkids, if that wasn’t obvious,” he scoffs, running a hand through his hair.
You smile a little. “I figured.”
He presses his lips together, looking up at his ceiling. “I don’t… I don’t want to marry some poor girl while I’m young just to pump out a child or two to please my mother. I don’t want to start a family if it’s just going to collapse around the kids because me and their mother weren’t right for each other.”
It’s coming together in your mind. The need for a fake girlfriend. The fact his grandmother would be concerned enough to arrange a miai. The fact that, during your entire time working next to him, you hadn’t heard anything about a partner.
Kuroo Tetsurou is starting to make sense.
“That sort of thing can really affect kids, you know?”
“Yeah, I do.”
His hand tightens around yours once more. You’d forgotten he was holding it. But, you suppose, touch from someone you trust can be a wonderful antidote for nerves.
“That, and…” He squeezes his eyes shut again, frowning. “It wouldn’t be fair on whoever I married just because it’s the ‘right’ thing to do according to my mother. It wouldn’t make either of us happy.” He pauses, his voice lowering ever so slightly. “It’d just be a waste of everyone’s time.”
“It sounds like a lot of pressure,” you say. It’s the truth.
Kuroo chuckles. “You could say that.”
He swallows, finally letting go of your hand. “Thanks for coming tonight, by the way. You saved me a lecture.”
“No problem,” you smile. “The food was good, at least.”
Kuroo cracks a small smile. You’re glad for it. He shifts forward on the bed and stands up, stretching his arms above his head. “I’m gonna try and sleep.”
“Good idea,” you nod.
Kuroo flicks the light off and the two of you settle down into your respective beds, shifting uncomfortably under the sheets. Yours feel new; a bit stiffer than you’d like, with all the firmness of that damned blouse you had to wear in high school. Uncomfortable as it is, it’s not the reason you feel so restless.
Today keeps running through your mind, random moments deciding to hang in your mind with startling clarity. Nothing had gone wrong, but it feels like nothing went right. It’s this strange limbo, a skinny path running flush against a mountain, hugged by a steep, seemingly unending drop.
Something clicks into place. Something about how Kuroo sees himself.
Kuroo Tetsurou doesn’t feel whole; he feels like a patchwork, a collage shambled together, drawn from a whole range of other people. Things that seem so certain to other people are lost in a fog for him; ideas about love, about family, about security.
For Kuroo, there’s doubt. A fear that something will fall apart. A fear that he’ll repeat the same mistakes as his parents – the feeling that he already has.
Divorce tends to do that to people. To families. It’s not as simple as a family unit being cleft in two. Instead, it’s like they’re torn off into chunks, bits of themselves overlapping with bits of everyone else, but with edges that don’t line up nicely anymore. Even when the parents tell their kids they don’t need to pick sides, it feels like every choice you make, every little thing you say, betrays an allegiance that can be weaponised. It leaves people as a bunch of glued together fragments without a place to belong.
Some kids respond with a staunch loyalty to one parent, simplifying their experience into a straightforward tale of good and evil. Others are left adrift, lost in the knowledge that perhaps both parents are wrong, perhaps both have performed acts of cruelty against one another.
But it’s impossible to known which Kuroo is. You have your suspicions, of course, but you know better than to make assumptions.
You roll over onto your side, seeking out his shape in the dark.
“Hey, Tetsurou?”
“Yeah?” His voice is already laden with sleep.
“Thanks for opening up to me,” you murmur. “I really appreciate it.”
There’s silence for a moment. Then, a confused little chuckle. “Shouldn’t I be thanking you?”
It doesn’t sound like he’s teasing you. Thank God.
“Well, it can’t’ve been easy,” you say, trying to find the right words to express yourself. “So… thanks.”
He hums in response. “Yeah, well… thanks.”
Nothing more needs to be said.
As you finally drift off into an uneasy sleep, you hope that, at the very least, you’ve managed to bring your friend some comfort.
five times he thought she would leave (and the one time he didn't)
Can't believe I've been in fandom this long and I've never written a "five times" fic. Until now. :)
1. Failure
He waited until he knew she would be asleep before joining her in bed. This wasn’t how he expected the day to end.
It started with a message from Leia, rousing him from slumber in the cockpit of Slave I. He didn’t realize he was smiling until he switched on the nav computer to chart the quickest route home. She had some new outfit to show him, not it really mattered. She missed him and wanted him, that was the important part.
Now all he wanted to do was go back to his ship. To feel the comfort of the familiar walls and instruments. To be alone.
He had a son on the way. Half of him and half of Leia giving her the assurance that he couldn’t provide.
No matter how long we’re together, you’ll always be bracing yourself for the sad and bitter end.
He stood in the doorway of their bedroom, his eyes tracing in the vague shape of her under the blankets. Maybe she was right.
She won’t remember you.
Sintas had said that about Ailyn once. She knew it wasn’t true, she said it to hurt him. He knew it wasn’t true and he left anyway. There was almost nothing in his life he regretted as much as that day.
Leia might one day despise him just as much. He laid down beside her in bed. She stirred a little and shifted back towards him the way she always did. It was habit, not forgiveness. He put her hand lightly on her side, his fingers just crossing onto her stomach. He listened to her breathing in the dark. “I’m sorry,” he said aloud, but not loud enough to wake her. I'll try, but it won't be enough.
2. Translation
He stayed close for the first few months while she battled morning sickness and exhaustion. He never enjoyed playing one of her senate guards and standing by while she made small talk with her politician friends, but at least like this he was useful.
They were flying in for yet another meeting when she turned her head toward him. “I think I’d like to see you naked while we’re on Coruscant.”
Boba stared at her from behind his helmet’s visor. She was sitting in the co-pilot’s seat on Slave I, the belt wrapped tightly over her swelling stomach. Her tone was casual. “Okay. But you see that all the time.”
“No, I’ve never seen it before and I want to.” Her expression was completely serious. No dancing light in her eyes, no teasing curl of her lips.
“You saw it this morning,” he insisted.
She was looking at him like he’d grown another head. “Boba, I swear to you I have never seen that play.”
“...Play?”
“Yes! You, Naked is a play about the life of Valdorr Sunspar. The artist?”
He should have been able to get it from context clues, even if he had no idea who the fek Valdorr Sunspar was. He braced himself for laughter, but it never came.
Instead Leia leaned forward and pulled up the holonet on the console. “Here. This mural is his most famous piece.”
He had seen it before. A smaller version, maybe a faded print hanging on the wall of some cantina. Leia met with educated and powerful people on a daily basis and they often talked about things that sounded like a foreign language to him.
Their lives were so different, with so many different points of reference. One day she would get tired of explaining things to him.
3. The Force
“Look at him, he’s the spittin’ image of ya.” Fenn Shysa swiped at his arm, and for once Boba didn’t try to avoid the blow. The other man’s fist connected hard enough to sting.
Jonah was sleeping the way he never could manage to at night, oblivious to the two men standing over his crib.
“Where’s Leia?” The Mand’alor asked.
“Packing.”
She was joking about it this morning. “What does one wear to an uninhabited swamp planet?” Boba couldn’t play along. His stomach was a knot of dread. Dagobah wasn’t just a swamp planet. It was where Skywalker trained with a Jedi Master in exile. It was where he wanted to train his sister.
And for once, Leia wasn’t saying no.
“I’ll keep an eye on things while you’re gone,” Fenn said. “Don’t worry.”
Mandalore was just one more thing Leia could cast aside if she chose to follow her brother’s path. She would take Jonah with her. He might look more like Boba in coloring and features but he was Leia’s son in one crucial way.
He was like them.
4. Competition
“Come on Jonah. You can do it.” Leia stretched out her arms, her fingertips just short of the toddler’s reach.
“Maybe he’s not ready to walk yet.”
“He can cross the living room with alarming speed when he has furniture to hold on to,” Leia retorted. “Trust me. He’s ready.” Jonah slowly let go of the chair back and Leia dropped to her knees, her arms still outstretched. “That’s it. Walk to Mama.”
Jonah took one determined step forward, pivoted and took four steps until he collided with Boba’s knee. “Da!” He crowed, reaching up. It was so sudden Boba almost forgot to act surprised.
“I guess you’re right,” he said as he gathered the boy up. Jonah had taken his first step two days ago while Leia was still at the Galactic Summit on Sullust. “He is ready.”
Leia sighed, her hands dropping into her lap. “I gave birth to you, you little traitor.”
“Do you want to try again? Maybe he’ll walk to you this time.” Boba started to put him down, but Leia was already rising to her feet.
“No, don’t push him. We’ll have lots of time to work on it while you're working next week.” She kissed Jonah’s round cheek and he giggled. “But you can give him his bath and put him to bed tonight since the two of you are such a good team.” Her commlink chirped and she picked it up. A warm smile crossed her face, and her lips compressed as if she was holding in a laugh.
“Your brother?”
“No. Remember Isolder? From Hapes?”
“The prince.” The prince who wanted to marry Leia and make her queen of Hapes. “His mother hasn’t killed him yet?”
“No. She was deposed and now we’re working together on this new energy bill.”
After she left the room Jonah reached up and patted Boba’s cheek. “Da. Dada.”
“Our job is to make her happy,” he reminded his son. He lifted him up and turned him upside down as he squealed happily. “And speaking of that, you’re going to bed early tonight.”
5. Independence
“Did he fall asleep?”
“Yes. Jonah did too.” Leia climbed into bed beside him and flopped back on her pillow with a weary sigh. “We’ll take him to the med center tomorrow. He’s malnourished and there could be other delays. We should try to get as much information as we can so we know what kind of support he’ll need.”
It was reassuring to know that she was making plans for their newly adopted son. Boba turned to his side to face her. “What made you change your mind?”
“You didn’t exactly give me a choice.” Anger rippled through her voice, reminding him that he was very much still in the strillhouse.
“I said I was-”
She turned and her fingers covered his mouth. “I appreciate your apology. I do. But I’m still furious that you adopted a child without asking me. We have to make these decisions together.”
He caught her hand and kissed her palm. “You’re right.”
“No.” She pulled her hand away. “That’s not going to work this time. I’m going to be angry for a while and you’re going to have to deal with it. Do I make myself clear?”
“You do.”
“Good,” she continued in the same hard tone. “Also I’m very proud of you. It doesn’t make me feel any better but I want you to know that.” Leia turned away, pulling the blankets with her.
“Is there anything I can do?”
“You can lie awake all night and think about how you screwed up.”
Fierfek. She knew him too well.
5. Success
They stood in the wreckage of the courtyard, three senators, a traitor and Boba Fett.
“We could just agree to keep quiet about it.” Senator Pooja Naberrie looked at Leia and then at him. She didn’t even need to say it out loud. After years of “keeping it quiet” her colleagues finally knew the truth.
Leia frowned, weighing her options.
It wasn’t going to go well. Her friends and her rivals would use him as an excuse to discredit her and to question her judgement. He was, as he’d told her long ago, a liability. But when he looked around the courtyard again at the homemade explosives she used to defend herself with, he felt nothing but calm.
“If I ask you to keep quiet now then it’s a cover-up,” Leia observed. “And a ticking time bomb. Boba?” She turned to him. The front of her dress was torn and stained with blood.
We have to make these decisions together.
“I know what I signed up for.”
Her shoulders relaxed a little and there was a warmth in her eyes that felt like an embrace. “Thank you,” she said. The adoring look wasn’t just for him, it was for the people standing in this courtyard with them wondering why the hell she was married to him.
He turned his attention to his prisoner. One quick stop in Coruscant to deliver the traitor and then they could pick up the boys. Maybe a small vacation was in order, to ride out the worst of the publicity. A little family time.
Whatever happened, they would face it together.
Just Three Wishes
pairing: changmin x g.n reader
genre: childhood friends(?) to lovers au, fluff (i think this was really cute tbh)
wc: 2.8k
plot: You meet someone from your past as they come back into your life with a coupon that you handwritten when you were six, asking for three wishes for Christmas. What you couldn’t think about, however, was how your childhood crush got their hands on it, considering he wasn’t the recipient of the original gift.
a/n: this was actually my first collab that i’ve ever done for tbz and i was like crazy nervous for it ahaha but thank you to Dana ( @timextoxhajima ) for creating this cute "12 days of christmas’ collab and for the other creators that also are apart of it!! you guys are all amazing writers and i look up to you all as a deobi writer ahaha but this was fun to write!! i hope you guys support this collab and give the other lots of love too!!
COLLAB MASTERLIST | MY TBZ MASTERLIST
“Choi Chanhee, what are you going on about?” You grumbled softly as you rubbed the sleep that was still leftover from your eyes, sitting up slightly on your bed while the person on the other end of the phone call that was on your nightstand continued to loudly rant about his problems.
So much for sleeping in, you think to yourself as you continue to listen to your best friend talk into the speaker phone.
“Remember when we were kids, you gave me that coupon where you would grant me three wishes whenever I wanted them? I needed to use them now for this dumb holiday I’m going on, but I can’t find it.” He grumbles and you could hear a bunch of shuffles that indicated he was still looking around his bedroom to look for it.
You remember the coupon that you wrote clearly in messy neon green handwriting, thinking that for your best friend it would be the greatest gift to let him have three wishes that you would grant under any conditions that were given. There was even an entire terms and conditions that you wrote on the back with your six year old conscience putting it into consideration, smartly, before signing it in a signature stamp of a smiley face that you got from a teacher weeks ago as a prize for the golden stars you’ve had all year.
“Where was the last place that you had it? Did you misplaced it anywhere, or maybe someone might’ve taken it from your room, even though it seems stupid for it to happen.” You say and huff out a breath as you hear him deeply sigh on his end in frustration, up until the moment that he speaks up once again.
“The only person that could have possibly taken it as a joke is my roommate, but I don’t know if you remember him from when we were kids.” He mutters almost to himself and you furrow your eyebrows at the thought of who his roommate was, considering you don’t remember him telling you who it was at all.
“Who is it? Juyeon? Kim Younghoon?” You asked and got up from your bed, however you could’ve sworn that if it weren’t for the cushions of your mattress behind you, you would’ve fallen right onto your hardwood floor from the sudden surprise of words that leaves his mouth.
“Ji Changmin, your stupid childhood crush.”
Wish One
You think that it’s quite hilarious that you were scared about meeting up with your childhood crush at your best friend’s apartment considering you’ve been there multiple times in the past. The only difference between those times and apparently now was that he was actually present in the apartment, which meant that there was no other place you could possibly go to.
Memories of Chanhee telling you that Changmin would always hole himself up in a dance studio late at night flashes in your mind, as you remember why you would never see him whenever you went over. However, that didn’t mean that he didn’t exist as you remember the fond boy from when you used to be in elementary school, developing a small crush on him in the third grade because you agreed to ‘date’ for a day or two.
It was quite embarrassing as you remember it, not knowing what you were doing at the time because you were pretty sure that the person you were back then was different from present you. Of course you were, it’s been over fifteen years since you last saw him and wrote the coupon so what difference would it have made?
As you finally arrived at the familiar apartment building, you made your way to the familiar floor with the festive decorations on it with caution, softly knocking on the door as you waited for the person on the other end to open it. The sight that you were greeted with, however, made it feel as though your breath had gotten knocked out of your lungs, since the person in front of you was definitely not the childhood crush that you had back when you were a kid.
“Ji Changmin.”
His name easily slips out of your mouth as if it were like a baby on a slide, and you watch as a small grin paints across his lips while he leans against the doorframe. The smile that was on his face was no different from the one that you recognized in the past that never seemed to change, however he had grown well, you think to yourself as you looked at him with a surprised look.
“Y/N, it’s good to see you again. Chanhee told me you were visiting.” He says while you hummed in response entering into the small home after he had moved aside for you to step in.
“He told me that you had something of mine that you stole from him.” You mused, turning to look at him with an eyebrow raised while you stood in the middle of his living, watching as he grins widely while holding up the familiar coupon from your six year old self.
Why did you think it was so cute back then?
“It was never addressed to him properly,” He playfully retorts and you could tell that from the glimmer of mischief in his eyes that he was up to no good, making little butterflies appear in your stomach from how attractive he suddenly looked in the light, “Which means I technically have the three wishes now, if your coupon is still valid of course.”
You weren’t sure why you were suddenly feeling attracted towards this more grown version of Changmin, but something about his confidence and aura screamed for you to get close to him once again; see what changed and what stayed the same from what you remembered him for. However, you were also a bit wary considering it’s also been years since you last saw him, which means that you weren’t sure what he was capable of in terms of your heart.
“What’s your first wish then?” You say while crossing your arms in front of your chest and he smiles a bit before thinking for a bit as he looks back at you with a softer look on his face.
“Let’s go on a boba date, to catch up for all the years that we missed,” He says and holds out his hand for you to take, making you give him an unsure look before placing your hand into his as you allowed for him to drag you to whatever boba place that he liked, “I promise, I’ll be the gentleman and pay for it.”
After that promise, you do end up at the boba place catching up with one another about the years that you missed from one another, including the ones where you already heard of the speculations from Chanhee. It was almost as if the two of you had still kept in touch with one another once in a while, like you never stopped talking to one another because of your different ways, but you were grateful that he never went into too much depth with your childhood.
That didn’t stop the butterflies in your stomach, however, to stop erupting in your stomach with every glance that he threw at you, making it even harder for you to even think about his other two wishes.
Wish Two
You somehow find yourself spending more and more time with Changmin after his first wish, finding some sort of comfort in his company despite the teasing that always came from Chanhee. He took pride in himself after that first wish that he was happy that Changmin stole the coupon from him, up until he was dragged back to his situation with his family at home during the holiday.
Giggling to yourself, you looked out your window to see the grey and white skies indicating that it’d snow pretty soon, wondering what he might be up to on his end of the sky. As if it were on cue, your phone lights up with a text message from him that makes you raise an eyebrow at his wish just as an incoming call arrives shortly afterwards.
“You want to use a wish to go ice skating?” You muse, holding your phone up to your ear as you were already getting up from where you were to go pick out an outfit from your closet to wear.
“It’s pretty nice outside to go skating though, don’t you think? Plus it’d be fun for us to go, after how much we had fun catching up last time.” He grins on his end, making a smile spread across your face at how excited his tone was on the line.
His positive aura was contagious enough to even spread to you through the phone.
“I suppose… Just pick me up in fifteen minutes.” You say, smiling as he hums in response before hanging up the call which makes you think to yourself; was this even a date?
After throwing together a good outfit that would keep you warm from the harsh winter, you smiled to yourself as you admired how put together it looked when you heard the sound of a car resonating from outside. Noticing that it was the familiar car driven by Changmin, you grabbed your phone and keys before leaving your apartment to go ice skating
The entire trip was comfortable considering you two were still at the level of friends that were still getting closer to one another. You remember what Changmin had said the last time that you two had met, where during your boba date he remembers vaguely how you both dated for a day or so while looking at you amusedly for your reaction to it, in which you remember cringing to it slightly.
It seemed as though your thoughts were gone by the time that you both made it to the skating arena that was close by to the park that you recognized from your middle school days. A smile paints your face as you notice the little kids that were skating around with their friends and family along with the different couples that were skating around as well, making you turn to look at Changmin with a curious look as you noticed that he was already looking at you.
“This isn’t a date, is it?” You asked him in an amused tone and he gives you a playful look before shrugging slightly, a breath escaping his lips as he glances between you and the arena.
If anything, he’d think that he was being obvious with his actions towards you, that there was that side of him showing how much he really liked you and admired how well you grew up since the last time you two encountered.
From the moment that he found out from Chanhee that you, said roommate’s best friend, was the same person from his childhood that he had a huge crush on and dated for possibly a day or two. He remembered the way that your eyes would always light up at the sight of one another as kids, along with how it would also be whenever you talked about your day or admirations so passionately that would make his childhood crush on you stronger.
So when he knew that you were still honoring the wishes that you owed Chanhee, he took it upon himself to take it for himself instead and hope that maybe you wouldn’t be too mad at him for stealing them. He was surprised that it ended up being the complete opposite seeing as though you were willing to go on the boba date, and now the ice skating date after weeks of warming up to one another again this winter.
He wished that maybe, those feelings from back then were reciprocated as the strong feelings that he held for you now after hiding himself from you for so long.
“What if I wanted it to be a date?” He responds to your question, giving you a more hopeful look that makes you feel flustered in your seat while you could feel a small rush of heat at your cheeks, eyes darting away from his to look at the ice skating arena once more.
You weren’t sure if it was the fact that he was your childhood crush, or maybe it was the new emotions of him still being your crush now that was making you feel this way, that you were slowly falling for Ji Changmin again. It was almost a haphazard for your heart, you think, that you were falling for the kind boy once again like you did back then for everything that he became in this present day.
And you weren’t complaining about it either as you pondered to yourself whether you should take today’s date as an actual date or a wish that he wanted to use.
“I guess it wouldn't hurt then, right?” You say and you could tell that by the way that his hand snuck into yours to give it a soft squeeze, you knew that you’d be okay.
Wish Three
It was a quiet morning that you wake up Christmas morning somehow arms wrapped around someone’s torso as the light coming in from your window was beaming through. It made you confused since you weren’t used to the feeling of being with someone on the holiday that you didn’t celebrate as much as your peers did, but it was the sight of the person beside you that somehow made a smile appear after remembering how you got here.
After the ice skating date that Changmin had taken you on weeks ago, you both went on another boba date that resulted in him asking if you wanted to go out with him without the label because he wanted to go slow with you. You, for one, weren’t complaining considering you had rather taken it slowly when you both had just reconnected about two months ago in the cold.
Now it was two months later on Christmas morning that you found yourself wrapped around each other’s limbs as the snow from last night’s storm was finally over and accumulated to the large piles of snow outside. You looked at Changmin with a smile that had met your eyes, taking in his soft facial features as he continued to sleep while facing you at the same time.
It wasn’t until you noticed him stir and his eyes were now suddenly locked onto yours that he gave you an amused look while smiling shyly to himself. In almost a split second, his shy demeanor changes to a more playful one where his hands now meet your sides to tickle you up and down as a loud bundle of giggles escape your lips.
“Hey, stop it! You can’t just do that!” You call out in between breaths and laughters, giving him a look when he pauses to give you a mischievous grin that made you acknowledge that at this point, he was never up to anything good.
But then again, you wouldn’t be surprised considering that it was just him that would make your heart speed up at the pace that it was going at like it was now; too fast.
“What if I said I wanted to use up my last wish today as my Christmas gift? Can I do that?” He says releasing you from his hold as he allowed for you to catch your breath to think without having his tickles distracting you from what he had planned for his last wish.
These last few weeks he hopes that all of the signals of you both just enjoying your time in the present were the ones that were all greenlights for what he wanted to do. He had been wanting to finally make it official with you, but he wasn’t sure how you would feel about it considering that even though it was his last wish, it could go against your ‘terms in conditions’ if you were to say no in response to it.
“What did you want to grant as your last wish then?” You ask him softly, looking at him in curiosity as he pretends to think to himself the question when he glances at you once more.
In a blink of an eye, he leans forward to connect your lips into a gentle kiss that was full of warmth and love, one that was able to leave you breathless enough to make you blink for a moment when you both pull away. A smile is painted across his lips as you are caught flustered and off guard, making you look at him confusedly when he speaks up once again.
“My last wish is for me to finally become your boyfriend, for real this time and only if you’ll let me.”
Momo Yayorozu is a lesbian and just doesn’t know it yet.
my computer died half way through writing this and none of it saved so while I love momo I am done with it.
Omega! Yayorozu x Alpha! Reader.
warnings: light smut,
word count: 2,300 (about)
summary: You and momo are good friends, you just wished you were a little more.
Yayorozu’s hands were unusally soft for a hero. I mean you’d think with all the fighting she did that she would have at least a few callouses on her hands but no, they were always so soft. Not that you were all that surprised, she probably had some fancy lotion that cost a fortune and worked miracles. Her hands were on you now, slowly working out the kinks in your shoulders.
“You really need to be more careful (y/n) you could seriously hurt yourself if you keep trying to spar while you aren’t properly stretched out,” she scolded lightly. You knew she was right, but if this was the treatment you get for not stretching, you couldn’t complain. Her scent was soft, like cherry blossoms and citrus.
“Not that I don’t apricate this Momo, but people might get the wrong idea if you stay so close to an Alpha,” you warned and felt her freeze for a minute.
“I don’t care, Everyone knows were just friends anyway,” she said and you felt a sharp spear pierce your heart. that’s right, you were just friends. And of course, no one would think twice about Momo rubbing your shoulders, she was straight after all.
The two of you were still surprisingly close for an Alpha and Omega to be. It hurt a little bit each time she took your hand in hers, or cuddled up next to you during class movie nights.
Even though you had no chance, it was hard not to fall in love with her.
“(y/n)?” Momo prompted and you realized she had asked you something while you were spacing out.
“Sorry what was that?” you asked
“Do you want to get boba?” she asked picking up her gym bag and you followed her.
“Sure,” you agreed and a wide smile spreading across her face making your heart do funny things. “my treat,” you added. and her smile evaporated turning into a stubborn pout.
“(y/n) why do you never let me spoil you?” she whinned hanging off your arm dramatically maing you chuckle. you placed your hand on her lower back steadying her.
“Come on Momo it’s just my Alpha instinct, You don’t want to hurt my pride do ya?” you shrugged and she huffed.
“Okay but I’m paying next time,” she said and you agreed placidly.
The boba shop wasn’t too far from the gym you worked out at, momo staid on your arm as you walked. She leaned her head on your shoulder as you waited in line making your heart skip a beat. you looked around the small boba shop at the other people, and you wondered if they thought you were a couple.
“Hey (y/n) will you order for me? I need the bathroom,” Momo said squeezing your hand and pulling away from you. instantly you missed her closeness.
“sure,” you said with a nod. and turned your attention back to the line thinking about what she would want. Normally she got the brown sugar milk tea but maybe you’d surprise her with the caramel one instead.
You placed your order and waited patiently for your name to be called, then you felt a small tap on your shoulder. When you turned you saw a short yellow-haired omega girl looking up at you, a bright pink blush across her round cheeks.
“Can I help you?” you asked polielty,
“Oh! sorry I was just wondering if that girl you were with was your mate,” she asked and you did your best not to grimace. It wasn’t her fault so there was no use getting mad at her.
“No, we’re just friends,” you admitted. She beamed
“Oh! well my name is Peko and uhm i just think you’re gorgeous and I was wondering if you’d want to go out with me?” She offered, for an omega she was certainly bold. Suddenly Momo was back at your side, her hand taking its place in yours.
“A friend of yours?” she asked. you squeezed her hand and turned your attention back to Peko.
“I’m sorry, you seem like a very sweet Omega but I’m a UA student and I’m too busy to date anyone right now, I’m sorry,” you said and winced as she deflated.
“It’s alright, It was nice to meet you!” she said before scurrying over to her own friends.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to make things awkward,” Momo said
“Don’t worry about it,” you said with a shrug then to lighten the mood you elbowed her lightly.
“Rejecting girls isn’t any big deal for a heartbreaker like me,” you teased wiggling your eyebrows
“Oh how could I forget Omega’s just love you don’t they,” she giggled.
Momo couldn’t stop thinking about your interactions today. For some reason it felt wrong to see you with another Omega, one that was flirting with you no less. and even though you had said it as a joke, she couldn't help but think that you really were a “babe magnet” as Denki would put it. It made her uncomfortable for some reason.
Maybe it was because if you stopped spending so much time with her you would have enough time for a mate. No, you were her best friend, you wouldn't just drop her like that, even if your future mate demanded it. Momo knew that if her future Alpha ever suggested she spend less time with you she would drop him in a heartbeat. No Alpha was worth losing you over. but what if you didn’t feel the same way about her? the idea gnawed at her.
While she had never asked it, Momo had always sort of assumed the two of you would stick together after graduation, maybe even move in together once you both started working. She could very clearly see herself coming home to you after a long day of work and relaxing in your arms. or dancing around the kitchen together while you thought her how to cook.
But maybe that was just a fantasy in her head.
Her skin felt hot, itchy. Signs of her upcoming heat. She started moving around the room picking at her nest and rearranging it lightly. it was made of soft blankets and stuffed animals on her enormous bed. and at the heart of her nest was a collection of items you’d scented for her.
There were other items scented by alphas, but they were on the outskirts of her bed. None of them offered the comfort your scent did. Fermilar, soft, warm, protective. She wondered if she’d ever find an Alpha who smelled as good as you did.
Her phone buzzed and she saw you had texted her. You wished her a good night, and told her that you would be stopping by after class to check on her, so she should text you if she needed anything. Momo smiled and wondered if she could sucker you into to Facetiming with her so she could fall asleep with you. She knew you would, You always spoiled her when she was this close to her heat. You were going to make some omega really happy one day.
Momo woke up late the next day, a dull ache set in to her whole body. She whimpered and checked her phone. Just another text from you telling her good morning and reminding her to text if she needed anything. She really did love you, as much as a best friend could love somone.
Momo rolled on her side and brought her favorite hoodie to her nose breathing in your scent, which relaxed the pain some but also brought on a pang of longing in her core. She sighed, breathing in again, this was going to be a long day.
You spent the whole day fidgeting and nervously tapping on your desk. It was hard to focus on the lesson being thought when your omega was out hurting. It was wrong to be so possessive of Yaoyorozu but you couldn’t help the flare of hormones that just so happened to hit you everytime she went into heat.
You checked your phone religiously, Momo texted you as soon as she woke up telling you that she had everything she need but still wanted to see you after class. But that didn’t stop the fidgity way you checked your messages, after all you needed to know if she changed her mind.
The second the bell rang you bolted out of the room, tearing to the dorm room grabbing a convenience store bag full of treats for her before tripping over yourself to get to her room. Even if Momo claimed she didn’t need anything you would sooner turn up dead than show up empty-handed.
You took one deep breath before knocking at the door.
“(y/n)?” she asked
“Yeah Princess it’s me can I come in?” you asked. Princess was a special nickname you only used when she was hurt or in heat,
“The doors unlocked,” she replied and you took that as your queue to enter. To most Alphas, it would be maddening to walk into a room with an in heat Omega, but it was strangely calming for you. your nerves subsided as you saw Momo curled in her nest wearing one of your old hoodies.
“You shouldn’t leave the door unlocked its dangerous,” you chided softly, placing the bag on her side table and sitting gingerly on the edge of the bed, careful not to intrude on her nest.
“ ‘snot dangerous, I have you to protect me,” she whinned. You alpha let out a deep internal purr. That was right, you were her alpha and you were going you protect her better than anyone else could.
“Still you need to be careful when I’m not around Princess,”
“stop scolding me, come cuddle,” she huffed rolling her eyes and opening her arms.
“are you sure? You want me in your nest?”
“(y/n) you make up half of my nest now come here.” You thought about teasing her for being so bossy but decided against it. crawling over tward her and taking her warm body into your arms. Momo’s arms locked around you like a vice, you got comfortable knowing you’d be there for a while.
she buried her nose in the crook of your neck breathing in your scent and her hands went to your hair, running her fingers through it softly. You held her just as tight, your hands trailing up and down the curve of her back.
“Missed you today,” you said into her hair, her breath tickled your neck as she spoke
“I missed you more,”
“Now way you missed me more. You have a million things I scented for you it’s not the same,” you protested
“Did too miss you more, I’m in heat I needed my Alpha!” She shot back. you froze uner her and she pulled back, confused at your sudden change in mood.
“Momo, you can’t say stuff like that,” you said gravely serious, then seeing the confusion on her face you contued.
“you’re still an Omega, and one in heat for that, it does things to me when you say that,” you growled.
Momo’s thighs clenched together, it was deeply appealing to know she could rile you up so easily. Her hands moved to your stomach feeling the soft skin and bit her lower lip. She had never realised how much she needed to touch you. at that moment it didn’t mater to her that you were her friend, and a girl, she just wanted more of you.
“so, It turns you on when I call you Alpha?” she asked. it was very unladylike of her, but worth it to see the blood rush to your face,
“Momo-”
“or is it the needing you part? because that was true I needed you so badly all day Alpha,” before she could even blink you had fliped her onto her back and crashed your mouth to hers. She responded eagerly, kissing you with a passion she didn’t even know she had. It was exhilarating to kiss you and feel your body press down on hers. it felt right.But as soon as it started it ended.
“Damn it,” you growled, angry at yourself for losing control. you forced yourself off the bed leaving momo dazed behind. Your mouth still buzzed, it had been everything you had ever dreamed of to kiss her.
“I’m sorry Momo,” you said running your hand through your hair. “I should go,” you said, the smell was starting to get to you in a way it never had before, every instinct was telling you to kiss her again.
“wait, (y/n) please,” she called, grabbing your wrist and pulling you back, she was too close and you pounced again. Kissing her ferociously, your tongue slipping past her soft pink lips. you moaned into her touch before ripping yourself away again. Fuck she was delicious.
“I can’t control myself, I need to go,” you growled.
“I love you (y/n) please stay. I want you to kiss me like that, I meant it when I said I needed you,” she pleaded, tears forming in her perfect gray eyes. you whipped her eyes and kissed her softly.
“you mean that Princess?” you asked against her mouth, your hands lost in her thick black hair. she nodded, leaning in to kiss you this time.
“I love you so much,” she said you pushed her back, laying yourself out across her chest. as you savored her kisses.
“I’ve loved you for the longest time,” you said.
“then you’ll keep kissing me?” she asked making you laugh.
“mmhmm babygirl I’m all yours.”
Something Sweet
Chapter 2 - Scoops and Scones
← Previous - Next →
Series Masterlist
Pairing: Modern!Paz Vizsla x fem!reader
Word Count: 2.8k
Warnings: None!
Summary: You are welcomed with open arms into the group Paz told you about, and feelings start to bloom as the spring turns to summer!
On Tuesday you make sure to wear something kind of cute that you can wear to meet everyone after work. You want to make a good first impression, but also not be overdressed. You’re excited and a little nervous all day, the steady stream of customers keeps you busy. Springtime is a great time of year for business because lots of people have birthdays and anniversaries, lots of weddings too!
Just after 7 pm the door to the shop opens, and the bell above the door chimes. Paz steps in and marvels at how you have the shop decorated.
“Did you do all of this yourself?” he asks
“Yeah!” you reply, delighted in his interest “I love a good project, and I’ve been planning how I wanted this to look my whole life”
“Well it looks incredible, you did a great job!” he says
You blush a little and smile “Thank you”
You finish closing out the register for the day, make sure all of the lights in the back room are turned out and the heating is turned down before stepping out with Paz and locking up. He walks beside you, leading you a ways down the street towards the bar his friend Boba owns. Paz pushes open the door for you, and you see a group of people laughing and chatting sitting at a big round table.
Everyone looks up from the conversation and enthusiastically welcomes you and Paz in. They all stand up coming to introduce themselves and shake your hand. Of course you’ve already met Din. Boba owns the bar and hosts these Tuesday night hang outs, he’s a slightly older man with a bald head and a firm handshake but he’s quite welcoming. His business partner Fennec, a pretty woman with sharp features and a kind smile. Cara, who owns the boxing studio on the opposite side of the street. And Peli, a short firecracker of a woman with curly brown hair, owns the auto parts and maintenance shop around the corner.
They already have a place set for you at their table and start filling you in on all of the goings on in this city and their little group. Boba gets you a beer, and insists friends don’t pay. They tell you about the locals who come around to their various businesses, events happening at the clubs and bars a little further into the downtown area, they recommend restaurants you have to try, and ask you all kinds of questions. Where you’re from? What brought you out here? How did you get into botanicals? You answer their questions, laugh with them, talk with them and have a great time.
Then the conversation takes a bit of a turn… “That guy came back?” Cara says with an annoyed tone. The group groans, and hums with disapproval.
“What guy?” you ask, not wanting to pry if it’s a sensitive topic but she also said it in front of everyone so you figured it would be a fair question.
“Gideon” Cara spits
“He’s a high and mighty investor with a silver spoon in his ass that’s been bothering everyone that works on this street and next couple blocks,” Fennec explained “He’s trying to convince everyone that lives and works around here that we should sell out our businesses to him,”
“Why?” you ask indignantly
“He’s got this idea of turning the whole downtown area into a high end shopping and restaurant district,” Paz says “Which would be fine if this was a really big city with people that could afford to go to places like that every weekend. But this isn’t that type of city, and not the right kind of community for that,”
“Hmm” you sip your beer “sounds to me like he wants to change the city itself. Push out the locals and turn this into a major city” you say
“That’s exactly what he wants” Boba comments “that and to make tons of money”
“But he hasn’t been able to convince a single business owner around here to budge” Peli tells you “All of us are here because we want to be here. We worked hard to get to where we are and maintain our businesses. We’re not about to sell out to a sleaze like him”
“He wasn’t happy when the people I inherited by storefront from sold to me instead of him” Paz admits “and he’s probably pissed you got yours on the open market before him”
“So that means he’ll probably come around at some point and try to talk me into selling” you conclude
“Probably” Paz says darkly. He doesn’t like the idea of Gideon hanging around your shop… talking to you… trying to intimidate or manipulate you into selling out your shop to him.
“Don’t worry you guys” you assure the group “I worked too long, and too hard to hand over my dream to an asshole like that”
“Atta girl!” Cara claps your back and the group gives you a cheer of approval.
The conversation turns back to casual chatter. The group splits up so some people can play a couple rounds of pool and others can still sit and chat. You have an amazing time, it’s been so long since you actually got to hang out and have fun. You could see yourself coming to these group hang outs every week and becoming close with everyone in the group.
Eventually the night does come to an end. Din has to get home to his son and his girlfriend. Paz needs to get home and go to bed so he can be up early to get the bread in the ovens in time so they’ll be ready for customers in the morning. And you need to be getting home as well, there’s a big delivery arriving tomorrow morning and you need to be at the shop earlier than usual to receive.
You bid everyone goodnight and promise them that you’ll be back next week to hang out again. Paz walks with you out to your car.
“Thanks for inviting me out tonight” you say
“Told you, you’d fit right in!” he grins
“Mind if I come by tomorrow morning for one of those amazing breakfast sandwiches?” you ask him, as you reach your car “I’ll bring you a cup of coffee”
“It’s a deal!” he says smiling at you
There is something in the air… you don’t want to leave… he’s so kind and so attractive… but no, you steal yourself and get into your car. Pulling out of the parking lot with a gentle wave. Paz felt it too… damn he wanted to kiss you. But he literally just met you a few days ago… no matter… he’d see you in the morning.
———
The next few weeks go by, spring turns into summer. You continue hanging out with the group on Tuesday nights, they teach you to play some card games you’ve never heard of and you try fun and interesting cocktails Fennec invents. No matter what you always land up laughing and having a wonderful time. Paz has been teaching you to shoot pool, and walks with you every week to join the group. Your little crush on him is growing, and people are starting to notice.
“You like him,” Cara points out. You’re sitting at the table with all of the girls playing cards while the guys are shooting pool.
“Who?” You try to sound nonchalant
“Paz” Fennec chimes in
“He’s my friend!” You try to defend yourself
“Yeah,” Peli says “but you like him”
“Okay…. so maybe I’m attracted to him, so what? He’s my friend and he brought me into the group, I don’t wanna mess that up” you explain
“He likes you too” Cara says, placing down her cards and effectively winning the round. Everyone around the table groans and slides over game chips to Cara.
Over at the pool table the guys are having a somewhat similar conversation.
“Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, pal” Din says while lining up his shot.
“What?” Paz looks over to Boba thinking their friend was actually sick. Boba is eyeing him with a quirked brow and a smirk.
“Lovesick” Boba shakes his head while Din takes his shot “incurable and terminal… damn shame”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Paz moves around the table to get a better view of the ball placements
“You” Din says with a laugh “swooning over Miss Flowers over there”
Paz gets distracted and completely misses his shot. His head whips around to look at you. Giggling and talking with the others. He looks back to his friends, and shakes his head.
Paz stands back up and rubs the back on his neck, Din’s not wrong, he’s got it bad for you. “You think she’d go for a guy like me?” Paz asked them
Boba and Din rolled their eyes, “You’ve lost your touch Vizsla” Din says “she hangs on your every word. Yes she would go for you”
Still at the end of the night Paz walks you to your car, just like always, and says goodnight without asking you to hang out one on one.
Another week or two passes just the same as always. Hanging out on Tuesday’s, stopping into the bakery to pick up some bread every now and then, seeing each other in passing with a smile and wave.
One Tuesday evening Paz is hanging out in your shop while you close, like usual when both of your phones ting with the sound of a text message. It’s Boba saying he had to close the bar for the night and he wouldn’t be able to host the group tonight. Apparently it’s not an emergency or anything, he just had to leave town to go “take care of something”
“Well that’s ominous” you joke
“Boba’s an odd guy” Paz laughs “he’s got a history, but he changes the story every time you ask him”
You shake your head and laugh, agreeing that Boba quite the character. “Well… I haven’t had a free Tuesday night in months” you joke
“Well since I know you’re free right now” Paz says, working up a bit of courage “wanna go get ice cream or something?”
“Oooh yes!” You say excitedly “Have you been to that place that makes the fancy rolled ice creams down on 10th?”
God he’s so relieved you said yes…. “Yeah, it’s really good”
The two of you chat and laugh as you walk from your storefront down a couple blocks to reach the ice cream place. You both order fun and pretty rolled ice creams and sit at one of the outdoor tables, enjoying the warm evening and each other’s company.
“See now that I’ve got everything up and running, I really want to start trying to make pastries to sell at the shop” he tells you
“Have you tried anything yet?” You ask
“Well I tried making chocolate croissants from scratch but apparently they are ridiculously hard to get right” he laughs “so I’m looking for simpler things to start with”
You laugh with him, and agree chocolate croissants are deceptively difficult to make correctly. “What about scones?” You ask
“Scone? Like those British cookies?” He asks
“Well sort of, they’re more like blank canvas bread” you explain “because the base is so simple and basic you can jazz them up anyway you want. Sweet, savory, fruity, chocolate… I even like doing meat and cheese scones”
“That’s actually not a bad idea” Paz says thoughtfully “You got any good recipes I can steal to work off of?”
“I do actually. Old family secret” you say mischievously “but lucky for you, the old family is not here to curse me for leaking the secret” He laughs and shakes his head.
“I could teach you sometime” you offer, having a moment of bravery “I mean, they’re not difficult to make or anything, but I… uh… I thought it could be fun”
“No no” he says quickly “that would be great if you could teach me. Are you free this weekend?”
Your cheeks heat up a bit and you smile “Yeah, I’m free this weekend”
“Come over on Saturday evening?” He asks “I’ll cook you dinner as a thank you?”
“Yeah, that'd be great”
———
Saturday can’t come soon enough… you flip back and forth in your head between this being a “real date” or not… you thought about texting the girls but decided against it.
On Saturday you wear something cute but comfortable, something you don’t mind getting dirty from baking but presentable in case this actually is a date. You pick up a nice bottle of wine on the way over to his apartment.
At the door he greets you with a hug and thanks you for the wine, welcoming you inside. His apartment is nice, well decorated and clean. Better most men’s apartments you’ve seen in your day. It looks like he’s got his shit together.
“Dinner is almost done,” he says. You look around to see that he doesn’t exactly have a dining table, the space isn’t quite set up for it. But he does have a peninsula that functions as a dining table. It’s already laid out with plates and cutlery, with a small sweet smelling candle in the middle.
“A baker and a chef” you laugh as both of you start in on the beautiful chicken parmesan he made.
“I wasn’t always” he says with bit of a bashful smile “Just a few years ago I was exclusively a boxed Mac n cheese and canned peas for dinner kinda guy”
“That’s a pretty drastic change, what prompted that?” you ask, enjoying your dinner just as much as the conversation.
“Moving out here actually,” he says “I used to live back east in the big city… had a shoe box of an apartment with no real kitchen and a dead end job… not a lot of motivation to cook. Coming out here, changed my life for the better”
You sip your wine and listen, as he describes what it was like living in the city and commuting for six hours every day, and his life changing trip out here to visit Din.
“It was actually my dream to move here when I was a kid” you tell him “I’m from a tiny little town way up north, and everyone used to talk about this place like it was the big city ya know”
“So what prompted your big move here?” He asks
“Well I’ve been saving up to open my shop for years, and working really hard to make this dream come true… but I woke up one morning and felt it in my bones that I needed to search the property website again…. and I am so glad I listened to my gut because I got my storefront pretty much the minute it got posted”
“Man.. luck was really on your side that day huh?” He finished his plate, and sips his wine
“Oh yeah, count my lucky stars every day!”
Paz wipes his mouth on his napkin, seeing you’re just about finished eating as well, and begins clearing the table. You help him wash up, despite his protests.
“Come on chef, if we’re gonna make scones we have to have a clean work station right?”
He agrees and the two of you get the workspace all cleaned up, just to mess it all up again with flour and butter and toppings!
They don’t actually take that long to bake, but you’re both a little flour dusted while you teach him to make a simple glaze for the citrus orange flavored batch.
When the scones come out of the oven the sweet batches get glazed or sugared, and the savory batches just need to cool. You ask to use his restroom to freshen up a bit so you wouldn’t get flour or butter on his nice couch, while you wait for the scones to cool to do a taste test.
To your delight, his bathroom is clean. And not just… cleaned up like there’s no clutter on the counter. Actual hand soap that’s appears to be regularly used, a liner in the trash can, more than just a five in one shampoo/body wash in the shower, and the mirror is clean! Either Paz deep cleaned in anticipation for your… not exactly a date?.... or he has his shit together… or, more likely both!
You spend the rest of the evening laughing, talking, sampling the scones, writing down flavor ideas together, and yeah definitely flirting. Somehow you get on the topic of music.
“Oh yeah, the city does free concerts in the park on Friday nights” he tells you “you bring a fold up chair and some snacks, and get to listen to free live music!”
“That sounds so fun! This city really knows how to do community events!” You put down your pen, having just finished writing down an idea.
“It’s amazing, you would love it” he says “would you want to go? With me?”
Your heart skips a beat “Yeah” you say softly with a smile “Yeah, that sounds like fun”
Boba almost laughed at the absolute horror on the faces of everyone around them. Not that he blamed them. Just one Mandalorian was a sign of trouble coming, but three? Fully decked out in gear? It was practically a battalion. Plus the three of them were actually looking for trouble this time.
“This way.” Paz lead the group around some buildings and down into another complex like the covert they had left a few days before. The main difference was that this one was completely silent. All three of them turned on their heat detection and pulled out their weapons.
Paz had explained his mission on the ship. There had been a covert on Tatooine that had gone radio silent and everyone feared for the worst. He was being sent to check things out and bring back any living members that might be there or any supplies that might have managed to stay hidden from looters. If nothing had gone wrong he was to see why their messages hadn’t been returned. Boba had pointed out that seemed to be a lot for one man if there had been empire activity and Din and Paz explained that the covert just couldn’t risk that many people. If Paz didn’t make contact with the covert by the date and time he was assigned with news then they would take that of confirmation of their fears. It infuriated Boba they had to live that way but he understood.
“There’s no way anyone is still here... It’s ice-cold and quiet. The forge has to be dead. Something happened.” Din’s whisper sounded way too loud but Paz nodded his agreement as they finally made it into the main rooms. They split up checking each bedroom, nook, and cranny for any sign of what happened to the people who had lived there.
He shouldn’t have been surprised when it was Din who ended up walking back out of a room with a little boy in his arms. He and Paz walked back over slowly so as not to scare the child.
“This is Jamie, he said that their Alor had been lying about food rations and selling beskar off for personal profits and when the others found out there was a big fight. The Alor killed many and got away, the rest grabbed their own families and ran off to find safety in case the Alor sent back mercenaries to finish the job.” Din explained as the kid hid his face in Din’s shoulder.
“He lost his buy’ce when he was hiding, he thinks it was stolen to get melted down and sold. He’s still young, we’ll bring him to the armorer and she can make him a new one.” Din said confidently. Boba hummed.
“Is that what he wants?” He asked and the other two looked at him confused but he sighed.
“He was betrayed and left here for dead, he might not want to be returned to another compound just like this with a bunch of people he doesn’t know who might just do the same thing.” Boba held up his hand feeling the outrage about to bubble over from the pair.
“I’m not saying it will, I’m saying that this child, Jamie, how can he know that? How can he feel safe there? It should be his choice, not yours.” He said before they could interrupt. Paz seemed to accept that more easily than Din.
“He’s right Din’ika. It is our job to take the child to where he will be safe and cared for so he can heal and grow. That might not be with our people. This is the way.” He said firmly and Din relaxed.
“This is the way.” He echoed and pulled Jamie back from his shoulder and Boba took off his helmet making Jamie’s eyes widen.
“I am not from a covert. My name is Boba. We’re going to take you somewhere safe. We can take you to another place like this one and get you a new buy’ce and find you a new family, or I can take you to my palace and we’ll call up some people to find you a new family who aren’t part of the creed. We want to do what will make you feel safest. It’s up to you, okay?” He offered and the kid bit his lip nodding. “You can think about it while we bring what’s left here back to my ship.” He said gently and gave him a little smile. Jamie nodded again and tucked his face back into the space between Din’s pauldron and neck.
Boba put the helmet back on and Paz patted his shoulder. Din headed back to the ship with Jamie leaving the two of them to finish up looking around. They collected the armor they could onto a sled along with packing up a few crates of supplies that could help the other clan and covered the whole thing with a tarp to bring back with them to the ship.
“Do you think he’d really be too traumatized by this to want to be with our people?” Paz asked as they started back through the tunnels.
“No, I think he’ll want to stay. But having a choice is important. I got sent to a home once. After my dad died I got arrested so many times, at one point they decided I’d just break out again and it might be better if I was rehabilitated. They sent me to a family on Mandalore since technically that was the closest culture I had.” Boba snorted shaking his head.
“I’m guessing it didn’t work out,” Paz said and Boba laughed bitterly.
“Understatement. I’m banned from Mandalore. Or was, by those in charge at the time. Not like they’re alive now. Forcing kids where they don’t want to be and don’t feel safe is only asking for trouble. I have connections. I can find the kid a home somewhere else if that’s what he wants. He’s old enough that he knows what will make him feel safe and I’ll leave him with a way to contact me.” He shrugged like it wasn’t a big deal. He knew Paz was grinning at him under his bucket.
“Having the notorious Boba Fett on call makes me feel safer and I’m a full-grown adult. I’m sure the kid will appreciate it.” He chuckled and the rest of their trip was shared in comfortable silence.
Once they got everything loaded and packed away and Jamie was snuggled on Paz Boba got them back into space and on their way to the covert.
“If I stay with the Covert… Can I pick who I want to stay with?” The little boy asked seeming to be thinking about it hard and Paz nodded.
“I’m sure that can be arranged. Din is our Beroya so he won’t be in much. He spends a lot of time with Boba. But, we can let you meet some of the other members if you like?” He offered and Jamie bit his lip.
“What about you? Can I stay with you?” He asked clearly hopeful. Boba hid his smile at Paz’s little gasp by turning to check some random readings that didn’t actually need reading.
“Yeah. If you want, then I’d be happy to take care of you.” Paz said brightly and the little boy smiled at him and rested his head against the blue metal covering Paz’s chest.
“I’m going to go check on Din,” Boba said after a moment, guessing Paz might want some time to talk to the kid without an audience and the ship was on autopilot at the moment anyway.
By the time they returned to the covert Paz had already sworn the adoption vow to Jamie and the two were debating the best colors for Jamie’s new buy’ce . Boba was surprised when Jamie ran up and hugged his leg, however.
“Thank you for saving me Ba’vodu Boba!” He said and Boba patted his head awkwardly.
“Of course. Be safe kid. If Paz gives you any issues you call me or Din and we’ll come around and flush his head in the ‘fresher for you, don’t worry.” He said making Jamie giggle before he ran off to follow Paz into the covert. Din stopped packing boxes back on the sled to look at Boba and he could feel the grin he was getting.
“Shut up Djarin.” He grumbled and Din laughed.
“I didn’t say anything.” He countered and Boba shoved him which only lead to Din laughing harder as they loaded up the last of the supplies for the covert and started to head around the back way. Maybe this whole being part of the covert thing wasn’t so bad after all.
[ V V S her diamonds ] – ch 03.
[4:15 p.m.] Disappointment tweaks at Seungwan’s heart when she peers through the huge glass window of their study cafe and sees no Bae Joohyun.
. . . . .
A group of students are huddled in the back, bent over open textbooks, laptops and scattered stationary.
Yerimie, Saeron, Seul, wow, there’s Jennie sunbaenim. And she spies Sooyoung sunbaenim balancing a tray of various caffeine-injected drinks back to the table.
A sad sigh escapes her lips. Perhaps she’s l–
“Seungwan?”
Oh my g– what the–?! Seungwan screams, whipping around in shock at the fingers gently resting on the back of her shoulder. She’s met with a slightly surprised Joohyun, standing there wearing a cream Jute blouse tucked into denim jeans, twinkling eyes and endless amusement etched into rosebud lips.
“S-Sunbae!” She exclaims, grasping her chest to calm her rapid-fire heart. “Y-You’re here, I was just–”
What, peering through the glass, looking for you like a creep?
“It’s fine,” Joohyun chuckles, adjusting her hold on the stack of thick notebooks cradled in her arm and motioning for the younger girl to lead the way. “Let’s go. This is heavy.”
Thursdays might’ve found an unexpected favour with Son Seungwan.
Busy eyes move from annotating to the two girls urgently making their way over, the students lifting their heads at Seungwan’s warm greeting.
“Sorry we’re late,” she sincerely apologises.
Jennie knowingly eyes her friend. “Not surprised.”
Joohyun raises her a playfully challenging brow before slipping into the free seat next to Sooyoung at the end of the table, right across her partner.
“You ordering anything, Wan?” Seulgi asks between highlighting her page, offering her and Joohyun biscuits in individually wrapped aluminium packets.
Joohyun takes one and Seungwan nibbles on the edge of her biscuit, deep in thought. The group soon slips into the robotic rhythm of monochromatic scribbling, greyscale note-taking, typing, and intermittent snacking. Jennie slips away to order small desserts for everyone at the table. They thank her with shocked bows and hungry stares, unable to settle on one in the garland of appetising coloured treats on the tiny table.
“Sunbae, you’re like Santa Claus,” Seulgi happily attacks the New York baked cheesecake. “When did you order this? It’s like we were asleep and we just woke up to presents!”
Her bearish enthusiasm has an observant Sooyoung unconsciously smiling around her fork.
As the group tucks in, Seungwan thinks a group study date is the safest she can be in terms of being on the receiving end of any more of her senior’s teasing mannerisms.
Fortunately, Joohyun always surprises her.
A little later on, they’re discussing the historical impact of contemporary Korean literature. Right in the middle of a sentence, Seungwan’s concentration is shattered by a deep blush of raspberry when she feels a feather-light graze against her right Adidas sweatpant leg. She chokes, almond eyes shooting up from messy essay notes, silently begging for mercy. But of course, Joohyun’s serene, unbothered expression gives nothing away as she continues to ask for her opinion as though Seungwan is crazy for looking like a flustered mess.
The frazzled junior doesn’t know what makes her head spin more; the fact that Joohyun, composed as ever, initiated a game of footsie right under both their friends’ noses in public… or that she secretly enjoys it.
Not that she’ll ever admit to the latter.
Small fists corkscrew the sleeves of her sky-blue Chrome Hearts hoodie as the desperation to hide the cherry-blossom tint in her cheeks builds.
. . . . .
It’s past midnight by the time they’re done, and everyone bids goodbye with ‘Z’s coming out of their ears. Much to everyone’s surprise, Sooyoung and Seulgi got along pretty well this evening and the taller girl had hastily agreed when Seulgi suggested they visit her favourite boba place. Yerim and Saeron were late for their movie, and Jennie was spending the weekend at her girlfriends’.
“Wait, are we dumb? Why did we book this now,” Saeron asks incredulously, “aren’t you gonna get wrecked by grumpy ajumma? Curfew ended like ten minutes ago.”
“Ah who cares, she’s always like that,” Yerim retorts with a dismissive wave. “I could fill a prison wall with how many strikes she’s given me and Seungwan and Seulgi unnie.” She slings an arm over Saeron’s shoulder, urging them to hurry. “C’mon, ads don’t take forever.”
“Wan-ah,” Seulgi calls back as she’s being dragged away by an eager Sooyoung, “if you order pizza can you leave some out for me!”
“Yeah, yeah. Enjoy. Don’t wake me up.”
“Hyun-ah, you sure you’re not coming?” Jennie’s sleek midnight-black Vetements cardigan blends with the hues of the night sky, giving away how late it is. She swipes into her messages. “Chaeng said she doesn’t mind.”
Joohyun laughs with mock disgust. “Thanks Jen, but I’m not crashing your date-nights anymore, thank you very much. I saw enough the last time, my eyes can’t take that kind of stuff.”
Waving goodbye, Jennie and Chaeyoung speed off, leaving Seungwan wondering what ‘kind of stuff’ Joohyun could be referring to.
The pair are drawn to the horribly lit bus stop and just about the only source of light for miles.
Seungwan yawns silently, but she doesn’t mind waiting with Joohyun. It’s late and although her apartment is in the opposite direction, she’d be at ease knowing her friend got home safely.
The darkness is engulfing, allowing an overhead street lamp to bathe them in its flicking spotlight like stars in a West End Production.
“We were pretty productive today, sunbae,” the younger tries to make conversation to fill the space between them. “Do you wanna come for next week’s session too?”
“Sure,” comes the reply. “Thanks for waiting with me. When’s your ride getting here? We should’ve booked at the same time.”
Seungwan nervously scratches the back of her neck, crinkling her worksheets in her grip. “Uh, I’m just walking home tonight actually.”
“Oh? Do you live closeby?” she asks in surprise, assuming they were both waiting for taxis.
“Ah, yes, I’m just– it’s just down there.”
Joohyun narrows her eyes suspiciously. “Down there… where.”
“Just a quick walk, past… past the duck pond,” the girl mumbles, staring down at her shoes.
“Q-Quick? Quick?” Joohyun stutters, malfunctioning at their severely clashing definitions of ‘close’. A delicate fist draws back and Seungwan flinches, Bae Joohyun looking closer and closer to doing what she did to Lucas to her poor, startled junior. “The duck pond near uni? Yah, Son Seungwan, that’s almost a twenty minute walk from here.”
“Fifteen if I have my speed walking playlist on,” Seungwan tries, but she isn’t listening.
“A lot of dangerous things can happen in twenty minutes, you know.” She hurriedly unlocks her phone and clicks into the KakaoTaxi app, altering the destination to add a stop and shoving it into reluctant hands. “Hurry, put your address in.”
Seungwan so badly wants to politely decline, not confident in her ability to sit in a moving vehicle with such a pretty person without hurling herself out the window at top speeds. But the latter’s glare dares her to try.
With shaky fingers, she successfully types in her address after three tries and hands it back. Joohyun checks it and confirms the change. Seungwan wants to comment on how her frantic nature is actually really endearing, but she resists, thinking she’s still cooling off from it.
“Thank you, sunbae,” she bows instead. She even tries to insist she pay her share of the ride, but Joohyun refuses, saying it’s what she gets for thinking it was a good idea to walk home alone.
Finally, a black Sedan pulls up to the curb and the driver winds down his window. “KakaoBlack for Bae Joohyun?” He checks, looking as ready as both girls are to go home and crash for the night.
The girl nods, opening the door for Seungwan to get into the backseat and climbing in after her.
Grand streaks of neon dance across the car windows, falling behind as quickly as they appear. Seungwan tears her gaze from the rapid city lights when she hears her name.
An almost child-like excitement masks Joohyun’s usually steely features when Seungwan hums questioningly, not having heard what she’d said. “I said unnie,” she repeats, “you should call me unnie now that we’re closer. Honestly, I wanted to correct you this evening, but I never got the chance to. Aish, everyone was so noisy.”
The topic of noise has Joohyun distracted, suddenly popping off on a tangent about how sound-proof couple study rooms should be integrated in cafes and student-dense areas alike. But Seungwan finds it hard to focus on anything other than those glowing eyes and that tiny, lopsided smile.
For the rest of the journey, the two exchange stories of their university life experiences, life outside classrooms and even a few laughs; mostly on Joohyun’s part at how Seungwan seems to have the most prankish roommates slash best friends in the world. She loses it at ‘carbonara shampoo’, finding the idea wickedly genius and hilariously absurd altogether. Uncontrollable cackling booms in the backseat and Seungwan can’t help but giggle too, ears saturated with Joohyun’s chimerical laughter.
Eventually, the street lights and the houses start looking familiar and they’re pulled into a student apartment lobby before either of them knows where the time went. Joohyun can see the grumpy ajumma at reception wearing a frown, but she doesn't know it’s because someone’s gone over curfew. Again.
“Goodnight Seungwan.”
“Goodnight… unnie.” Seungwan wishes, ignoring the way their new closeness unfolds her heart like a secretly passed note. “Stay safe, and message me when you get back!”
Making to get out of the car, she flinches when she’s unable to fully stand up. Gulping, she glances over her shoulder to see Joohyun holding her back by her bag straps. In her sleepy state, the younger can’t tell if that intently searching gaze is serious or not.
“By the way, when you were looking into the cafe from outside this evening, you weren’t checking Jennie or Sooyoung out, were you?”
Seungwan shakes her head truthfully. “Why?”
“Good.” A cat-like smirk graces her lips and Seungwan’s stomach drops. “Just making sure.”
OTH Masterlist
_________
Toshinori texts you religiously after that weekend. A sprinkling of messages throughout the day that make butterflies swarm in your stomach. They start off in the morning when you’re already working at Sweet Bean.
It’s always something simple like Have a good day! :-) or Good Morning! But nonetheless, his messages always stirred up warm feelings.
It always makes you smile, which Aiko takes full advantage of. The teasing you got when you saw her was merciless. The number of jokes centered around “you’re absolutely glowing” astounded you. If she wasn’t such a valuable employee or a good friend, you would’ve thought about sending her home.
Yamada outright teases you, much to your horror. He’s relentless, maybe even worse than Aiko. But it’s Aizawa’s knowing grins that make your stomach flip. But when Toshinori messages you, the growing waves of affection confirm that you would put up with all the teasing and giggling in the world for a chance to have something real with him.
The days slip into something warmer and longer, the air becoming sticky and thick with rising heat. You can’t help but breathe a little easier in the summer. It’s especially nice whenever students come in while they’re on break. They bring a sense of life and youthfulness that warms your heart.
The group of girls Sato brought are back again, lounging around a table. They have stopped by a few times since then, and it’s been nice, watching them study, gossip, and celebrate the end of the term. This time, they’re joined by two other girls, and you can’t help but smile.
“Boss, stop being weird,” Aiko whines from next to you. You roll your eyes, tearing your gaze away from the group of girls to your bubbly employee.
“Don’t you have a summer class you need to be getting to?” you ask bluntly. Aiko’s mouth twists as she’s about to volley back another teasing remark before she freezes. Her eyes widen as she processes what you said.
“Oh shit!”
Your customers offer the two of you a small glance as Aiko rips off her apron, throwing it into the back. Without another word, she sprints out the front door. As she exits, she sails past Toshinori, who looks mildly alarmed.
You grin as Toshinori shyly waves at you from the entrance. There’s someone with him that piques your interest: a boy with green curls and freckles scattered across his face. When they walk past the group of girls, the young boy waves excitedly, stopping to talk.
Toshinori’s been stopping by more and more, much to your pleasure. There were some days where he forgets to order something, too enthralled in chatting with you and watching you work. But you’ve never seen the kid that’s with him.
When Toshinori steps up to the counter, your phone buzzes. Your head tilts as you read it, and you pinch the bridge of your nose.
Please clock me out!
“Suga, can you clock Aiko out?” you call to the back. You hear him mutter, and you smile when he tells you she needs to be fired or demoted.
“He doesn’t mean that,” you tell Toshinori, who looks a little concerned. “Also I want you to try something!” You beam up at him, watching as his eyes widen before a soft, tired smile crawls across his face.
“I trust you. I’m good with whatever you want to make,” he mumbles, not quite meeting your eyes. You hum excitedly, turning around to make his drink.
He watches you fondly as you flutter behind the counter. He meant it, that he trusts you. He just can’t tell you everything. Not yet, at least. It’ll all come crumbling down if he says anything now. The smile on his face slips into a frown, the peaceful feeling evaporating from him. Toshinori’s so lost in thought, he doesn’t even notice when you’ve turned back around and placed the cup down in front of him.
Furrowing your brows, you wave your hand in his field of view, grounding him in the moment.
“Where’d you go?” you ask gently. He shakes his head, eyes downcast.
He’s about to answer when the boy that he came in with bounds up to the counter. Toshinori smiles and glances down, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“This is Midoriya. He’s one of my students.” Midoriya beams at you, and something clicks. You’re almost positive you had heard about him before. You don’t know whether he came up from Yamada or Sato, or the group of girls, but you’re positive Midoriya has been brought up before.
“It’s nice to meet you, Midoriya. I’m Y/N.” He waves at you, and your eyes pass over the faded lines that cover his hands and arms. Your heart drops into your stomach as you force your gaze to meet his, trying to maintain the cheery attitude.
“Got any plans for summer break?” you ask, hoping he didn’t notice your concern for his scarred body. He blinks up at you, his smile never leaving his face. If he did notice, he’s doing a decent job at not caring.
“Just training camp! It’s what we were all talking about.” Your head cock’s to the side, and you glance at Toshinori, silently asking for an explanation. He chuckles at your confusion before elaborating.
“There’s a training camp for the Hero courses coming up, so both Class 1-A and 1-B will attend.” You make a noise of understanding before nodding your head. Your gaze flickers to the group of students that are giggling about something. Your heart warms at the thought of them getting a nice break to train somewhere fun.
“Well, Midoriya, I just made Toshi a drink that all your friends are drinking. Would you like one too?” Toshinori’s face flushes red at the use of a nickname in front of his student, and you wink at him. You stifle a laugh as his blush darkens. Midoriya looks at the counter, mildly uncomfortable at how you tease his mentor, but he nods at the offer. You immediately get to work, when his quiet voice pipes up again.
“How much is it?” he murmurs. You shake your head, working quickly.
“Don’t even worry about it. My treat!” When you turn around with Midoriya’s drink, he looks very excited, like he’s about to vibrate out of his skin. Maybe giving him caffeine is a bad idea.
“Oi!” A voice draws your attention to the back, and you roll your eyes at Suga sticking his head out of the kitchen. “Giving out free things all the time is not a sustainable business practice.” Your nose scrunches up, and you stick your tongue out at him. He rolls his eyes before disappearing to bake. You purse your lips and set the drink down next to Toshinori’s.
“Ignore him. Anyways, it’s a coffee milk tea with boba!” you say excitedly. “Suga felt like making boba, and I figured why not add some black milk tea and a little coffee!” Toshinori smiles down at you, affection running off of him in waves. You watch as Midoriya and Toshinori both take a tip. Midoriya’s eyes widen as he chews one of the tapioca pearls.
“I know! The texture’s perfect,” you hum happily. “Suga kind of makes whatever he wants, and I’m alright with that. We’ve been talking about expanding so he can do some more actual cooking besides the ‘fucking sandwiches’, but it’s pretty expensive.”
You tap your chin in thought as you ramble to Midoriya, and Toshinori’s face pulls into a sharp grin. He’s going to tell you soon. He swears he will.
_________
You fall back against your bed, exhausted after a long day at work. The temptation to just shut your eyes crashes over you. Your phone buzzes much to your annoyance, but any frustration you harbor disappears when you see the message is from Toshinori. You smile stupidly at your phone, curling up on your side as you read the message he sent over and over again.
Can I call you?
You bite the inside of your cheek, glancing out the window. The moon’s drifting across the sky, city lights washing away the stars. It feels warm, and something syrupy makes its home in your chest.
Of course! <3
You narrow your eyes, thumb hovering over the send button. You delete the heart and hit send. A stillness hangs over you, as you wait. When your phone lights up with his incoming call, you sit up, bringing your knees to your chest. Tentatively, you accept the call.
“Hi,” you murmur, trying not to feel shy. He’s fucked you before; a phone call should be nothing. You flush, shaking your head at the thought.
“Is there something you wanted to talk about?” you offer hesitantly.
“Not particularly, just wanted to hear your voice.” A smile unfurls on your face, and you let yourself fall back onto your bed, your legs spreading out in front of you.
“Oh I see, you go a few days without stopping by Sweet Bean, and you just go crazy without me.” He stutters at your words, not able to form a reasonable answer. You laugh at his panic, but change the topic, offering him a way out.
“How’s work going?” He sighs in relief at the question.
“I worked on some lesson plans, and the students will be leaving for camp in a few days.” Your eyes slightly widen as you remember the way Midoryiya said everyone was excited.
“Right, camp! That’ll be fun for them!”
“They’re there to train. But the Pussycats will treat them well.” You bolt upright at his casual tone.
“The Pussycats? As in The Wild, Wild Pussycats? The hero squad?” you ask, desperate for confirmation. He laughs but reassures you that it’s true. Your rest your head in your palm as the realization that Toshinori probably knows some really famous heroes settles in. Your thoughts drift back to the green-haired boy you met and the scars that litter his skin.
“And Midoriya will be going too, right?” you ask. He makes a noise of affirmation, but something lingers: an unspoken worry, a hint of doubt.
“Are you worried for him?” you question lightly, trying to get a better grasp at what’s eating away at him. Toshinori sighs into the receiver, the silence hanging heavily between you too. You hold your breath, waiting for whatever he’s debating over to spill out and into the phone.
“I want him to push himself and grow stronger, but not to the point where he breaks his bones. But Aizawa will be there, and I trust him.” You hum into the phone, brows furrowing with concern. He feels farther away than normal, the phone distorting his voice, but not doing much to hide the fact that he’s avoiding something. A seed of doubt lodges itself in the hollow of your chest, but you drop the subject. Whatever Toshinori’s hiding isn’t coming out anytime soon.
You frown thinking of the first time he slipped up. It was subtle, so tiny that you could’ve easily missed it. Just a few inconsistencies about where he had been. They were small enough that you didn’t say anything, and there’s a chance that you were overthinking it. But at the same time, it sat uncomfortably in your chest, where it rests now, weighing you down. You lie back, letting yourself flop against the bed.
“Besides working on lesson plans, what else are you doing over the next few weeks?”
“Not a lot,” he answers quickly, relieved at the change of topic. “I have some meetings, but that’s it really.” You nod to yourself, a sly grin spreading on your face.
“So, would you be interested in, I don’t know, having another date?” You hear him sputter into the receiver, and you practically see flames of red spreading from the tips of his ears to paint his cheeks. “And it’s not that I don’t like you coming to Sweet Bean, but it’d be nice to see you other places too,” you murmur. His breath catches and you bite your lip, trying to stifle a giggle at his reaction.
“I’d like that very much.” Toshinori’s voice is soft, sending butterflies gently floating through your stomach. You sit up again, nervously tapping your fingers against your thigh.
“Good. I was worried you were beginning to lose interest,” you tease. He lets out a laugh at the notion.
“Sweet girl,” he groans, making you flush, memories of the last time he called you that overwhelm your brain. “I’ll take you anywhere you want.”
“There’s a small festival that’s going on, actually. It’s some sort of dance competition I think. Would you wanna go tomorrow and check it out?”
“It’s a date.” A large smile forms on your face, and you make a satisfied noise.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” you whisper.
“Goodnight, sweet girl.”
Laying your phone down in your lap, you look out the window and your brows crease, the twinge of concern solidifying its roots. The city lights look a lot colder now.
_________
The festival is wonderful, full of games, a variety of colors, and inviting scents. You had been right, and it was some sort of dance festival, much to your delight. Troupes of dancers in beautiful, flowing, clothing performed in the street all day.
You let out a little hum as you bring a spoonful of kakigori to your mouth. The sun hangs low in the sky, painting the scattering of clouds gold, and shining beautifully in Toshinori’s hair. You glance up at Toshi, before pulling the spoon out of your mouth and offering it to him. He grins sharply, accepting the spoon and taking a bite of the shaved ice.
“I swear, those people have the best topping options,” you exclaim. He scoffs at you, shaking his head as he returns the spoon.
“I’m pretty sure they’re the same as they are everywhere.” You narrow your eyes at him and pout. Toshi’s eyes widen before he lets out a laugh that resounds in the air around you, enveloping you in something warm and soft.
“I mean, you are right. Their menu is special,” he corrects himself, shoving a hand into his pocket. You laugh at him, before carefully holding the kakigori with one hand, and sliding your other arm around the one he just placed in his pocket. You rest your head on his arm, and when you glance up, a deep red blooms at the tips of his ears. You grin before looking towards the crowds on the street.
“I kind of wanna see another performance. What about you?” you ask. A noise of agreement rumbles through his chest, and the two of you walk towards the mass of people. You never let Toshinori go, holding him close until you reach the crowd. Making sure to keep an eye on your kakigori, you take his hand, trying to guide the two of you forward, but the crowd is surprisingly dense. You stand on your tiptoes, trying to see the current group of dancers that were performing, jealous of Toshinori’s height.
His phone buzzes in his pocket, and he gently pulls his hand away from yours. His eyes flicker over to you, and then back to his phone. You take another bite of your kakigori as you wait for him to tell you what’s wrong. Toshinori shifts uncomfortably on his feet, reluctantly looking back at you. Your stomach drops at the way his pointed face is twisted.
“There was an emergency at the school. I have to go.” Your brows shoot upwards. You had not been expecting a school emergency. Especially when they’re on break. But then again, it’s one of the most prestigious schools in the country, and some of the classes are about to go to a training camp.
You set your spoon down in the ice, and you nod, forcing a smile onto your face.
“I understand. Don’t worry about it.” His shoulders sag in relief, but you smirk and bat your eyelashes at him. “But I was looking forward to taking you home again.” Something full of pain and longing slips into his eyes, and his mouth fixes itself into a sad smile.
“Let’s have dinner tomorrow night. If you’re free.” Toshinori sounds sad as he says it, and you reach up to gently grab the side of his arm.
“Sounds good. I’ll see you then.” Your words give him permission to leave, and yet he hesitates. You squeeze his arm in reassurance. “It’s okay, Toshi.” He nods down at you, before stalking off into the crowd. You let out a sigh and turn back towards the dancers, taking another bite of the sweet kakigori.
_________
Toshinori is late. A twinge of annoyance flickers in your chest. He had already called you, apologizing to you about not being able to pick you up because something had kept him at work, and he was just now heading out. That was thirty minutes ago.
Starting to get flustered by the sad glances the waitress keeps sending your way, you pull out your phone pulling up Toshinori’s contact again. Before you hit the call button, Toshinori is sliding into the seat across from you. You blink blankly at him, before slowly setting your phone down on the table.
Something hot and sharp grows in your chest. He looks worn out, as if he’s being spread too thin, tugged in too many directions. He’s always looked tired, and you partially think whatever caused his scar is to blame, but this, this is different. A small frown forms on his face, and you reach out, resting your hand on his.
“Is everything okay?” you ask quietly. His eyes flicker between your hands and your concerned face. Toshinori’s face softens before he shifts his hand to squeeze yours lightly.
“I’m just glad to be here now.” You flush under his gaze and tighten your hand in his.
“I’m glad you’re here now, too,” you murmur. His large, calloused thumb strokes the back of your hand. You lean forward, wanting to bask in this moment. Toshinori mimics you, a smile tugging at his mouth. Your eyes trail up and down his face, and the tips of his ears turn red. Eventually, the waitress comes by again, and she looks relieved that someone’s finally joined you. She takes your order happily and manages to make only one comment about how long you’ve been waiting, much to your horror.
“Anyways, how was your day?” he chokes out once the waitress scurries off. Giving his hand one last squeeze, you pull it away, drawing back into yourself.
“It was fine. Same as every day. I’m sure your’s was more interesting.” Leaning against the table rest your head in your hand, looking at him expectantly. His eyes widen, and he opens his mouth, but before he can get a word out, he’s interrupted.
His phone buzzes on vibrate, and you bite the inside of your cheek. Toshinori exhales shakily, and he rubs the back of his head sheepishly. His face is downcast, shoulders slipped, and he meets your eyes reluctantly.
“Y/N, I am so sorry,” he starts, but you just shake your head cutting him off.
“It’s okay. We can reschedule,” you try to say brightly, ignoring the cold feeling seeping into your bones. He nods at you sadly and rises from the table. His mouth quirks up sadly, and he ducks down, pressing a kiss to your forehead. When he pulls away, Toshinori leans his forehead against yours and brings his hand up to caress the side of your face.
“Tomorrow,” he reassures. You nod against him, and he’s gone, tearing out of the restaurant in a flash. You twirl your straw in your drink and purse your lips, brain twisting along with the liquid. A frigid thought pierces through your muddled mind: maybe he wasn’t interested in you and didn’t know how to let you down? When the waitress drops off the check, she smiles sadly at you; you wish you were a thousand miles away.
_________
He doesn’t even make it the next night. You’re left by yourself for about an hour, trying to ignore the pitying looks from the waiter. You had been excited earlier, watching as the sun sinks lower and lower, until the sweet orange shifts into soft pinks and deep blues. But it’s dark outside now, and you feel nauseous.
Your phone rings, jolting you from your thoughts. Your mouth twists into a small frown when you see it’s Toshinori. You let it ring, tilting your head to the side as you look at his contact picture. It’s a selfie of both of you holding to-go cups from Sweet Bean. He had to duck down to fit into the frame, a pretty blush covering his face as he looks at you with more tenderness than you’re used to. You had taken it when he walked you home from the police station with the intention of sending it to Aiko. Taking a deep breath, you answer the call.
“Hi.” You wince at how pathetic your voice sounds.
“Y/N, I am so sorry,” Toshinori practically yells. His frantic tone jolts you out of your self wallowing pity.
“Toshinori, what’s wrong?” Your stomach flips as your mind races through all the worse case scenarios.
“There was a villain attack at the camp, and -” he breathes in sharply, trying to calm himself down. “I won’t be able to make it tonight.”
“Oh my god, do not worry about it. Do what you need to. I’ll talk to you later,” you reassure him, guilt pooling in your stomach. He quickly sputters out a goodbye, and the line goes dead. You walk home by yourself, and the entire time you think of those girls laughing inside Sweet Bean just a few days ago. When you finally go to sleep, your cheeks are wet and your eyes are sore.
It’s only the next day that you find out one of the students has been kidnapped. Bakugou Katsuki. You don’t know him, but you recognize him from the Sports Festival.
You close Sweet Bean for the day.
_________
Aiko is over the next night, watching you from the couch while you tend to the tea plants on your tiny balcony. She’s brought over takeout that’s been forgotten in your kitchen. You’re much too focused on trying to stay busy.
You hold the plants tenderly, trying to turn on the faucet of warmth inside you.
It’s foolish to be this worried about someone you don’t even know, but you can’t help it. You’ve met his classmates (and you are constantly worrying about them now), you know some of his teachers, and it’s horrible that he’s been kidnapped. It twists your stomach, and you bite back the bile that’s threatening to rise.
Your hands stay cold.
“Y/N, you should see this!” Aiko calls from the living room. Standing up, you wipe your hands on your pants and join her. On the screen is Aizawa, another teacher, and the principal of U.A. Your nerves pool in your stomach at seeing how much worse the bags under Aizawa’s eyes have gotten; you can’t help but think of Toshinori.
You space out, chewing on your lip nervously as the conference comes to an end. You hadn’t heard from him all day, and considering what was going on, that’s to be expected. But you just want to know if he’s okay. The panicked tone that was in his voice plays on a loop in your mind.
Aiko’s gasp jolts you back to reality, and your eyes zero in on the screen. There's a fight being televised. You squint, trying to make out the hero as the camera zooms and refocuses. It’s All Might, you realize. A shallow sense of relief overwhelms you. He’ll take care of this. But to your horror, the villain’s power is on par with his. You reach out, gripping Aiko’s arm, your jaw clenching.
Your brain slinks back to the day he had chastised you for running recklessly into a situation. It’s best to leave situations like this up to the professionals. That’s what he had said to you that day. And then he had stuck his neck out for you for no reason. He can’t lose. He can’t lose. He can’t lose, fuck.
You watch, mouth tightened into a firm line, as he takes a beating. After another forceful blow, Aiko stills next to you, the atmosphere between you two crystallizing into something cold and sticky as your jaw slackens.
On the screen, in All Might’s now baggy outfit, covered in blood is Yagi Toshinori.
This was written by a prompt from @wlw-lovestruck-fiction (you can find the prompt there and fic written by me)
I looked at my phone while I was walking home from Optimus. My partner Robin texted me. I smiled as I opened the text, ‘The woman I love, more than anything, who knows me better than anyone, has left me alone. I’m so offended’ I laughed as I read it before texting back, ‘I’ll get you some boba if it makes you feel better' I replied to them. I walked down to the subway, to ride it so I can get home quicker. As soon as I got down the stairs, I got a text. I looked at it, assuming it was from Robin, but it wasn’t. The text was from Duke saying that we were going to have an emergency meeting at the lair. A few weeks after I started my internship at Optimus I had realized I had powers, and I met with the syndicate one day when they broke in. I ended up joining them, because of what I found out about Optimus. I ended just staring at Duke's message for a minute. Robin didn’t know about the syndicate, nor me being a part of it. I felt really bad not telling them about it, and I wish I could. But for their safety, I had to keep the syndicate a secret. I started to type my reply to Duke saying I was on my way when I got a message from Robin saying they were going to try and bake some cookies their mom sent a recipe for, lemon bar cookies to be exact, and that they wanted me to help them. They also said Boba was a good apology present for ‘abandoning’ them for the day. I felt bad reading Robin's text, I wanted to go home and have fun with them, but Duke wouldn’t call an emergency meeting for no reason. He probably found something on Optimus, or maybe something to help take them down.
I erased my message to the group chat and started to type a new one, asking if I had to be there, I know the syndicate is important, and taking down Optimus, but I also really wanted to spend time with Robin tonight. Not even a minute later I got a response from Duke, ‘I’d prefer you here. But if you have plans, Bat or any of us can tell you tomorrow.’ I smiled as I read it, and another text was sent, ‘Yeah, so go have fun with your partner, MC ;)’ Bat texted. ‘I will. We’re making cookies,’ I sent them a text as I stepped on the subway on my way home.
I walked into the apartment, two boba's with me, “Robinnnn,” I called as I walked inside and shut the door with my foot. “MC? Is that you?” They asked as they stepped in the living room, “MC!” they cheered and walked over, “Hi my love,” they said to me as they grabbed one of the boba's from my hand and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. “I love you,” they smiled and drank some of their drink. “Me, or the boba?” I jokingly asked them with a chuckle, as they grabbed my hand, intertwining our fingers. “The boba,” Robin joked back with a smirk as I slapped them, “I will take that boba back Mxter,” I said with a giggle, as I put my purse down on the couch, I looked at them, “Now, about that cookie recipe your mom sent you that we’re gonna make,” I told them as they smiled at me, “Hell yeah we are! Let’s go,” Robyn said as they took another drink from their boba and walked into the kitchen motioning for me to follow.
We had baked the cookies, which were amazing, and then the two of us just cuddled for the rest of the night, but unfortunately, not everything lasts forever. The two of us had to go to sleep sometime, for some reason. I woke up to Robin's arms wrapped around me. I smiled as I looked at them, peacefully sleeping. God, they’re adorable. I stroked my thumb along their cheek, their skin is so soft, and warm. I chuckled slightly, right before I leaned in and planted a small peck to their lips. My already there smile grew, if that was even possible, as their grip tightened on me, pulling me closer, and their eyes fluttered open, blessing me with their small, emerald green eyes. “Hmm, I think I'm still dreaming,” they muttered, still half- no actually, mostly, still asleep. “Oh really,?” I asked as I cuddled my head into their chest, “yes. There’s a really cute girl in my bed,” They told me, as I blushed. I go to kiss them, again, but as I lean up a phone ring ruins the moment. I groaned as I rolled over to see I was getting a phone call. Who thought it would be okay to call me at- eight-thirty am? Oh, It’s Duke. I groaned as Robin spoke up, “who is it?” they asked me. Uhhh, quick MC, think of an answer that isn’t ‘the leader of a group I’m in called the syndicate where we try to take down Optimus.’ “Someone important.” I lied, sort of, I guess. I’m sorry Robin, but I have to lie. It’s for your safety. “Oh ok. Do they need something?” they asked me as I shrugged in response, “I’ll see,” I said, as I sat up and answered the phone. I wanted to be sassy and answer with ‘what do you need at eight-thirty in the morning?’ But I decided against it, “Hey,” I said into the phone, “Hi, Tiana. We’re having a meeting at the lair soon, and you have to be there,” Duke told me, as I groaned. “You couldn’t text this because?” I asked him, annoyed. You ruined the moment I was having with my partner. “It’s much more fun to call you, and annoy you,” he said, and I am one hundred percent sure he was smirking as he said that. The bitch. “Yeah, whatever. I’ll be there, text me the time,” I said, emphasizing the text. If he calls me again, I’m suing ChatSphere. I heard him laugh across the line, “alright, bye, MC, see you later,” he said, “bye,” I said and hung up.
I looked at Robin and smiled, “So, what was it?” They asked me as I opened my mouth to answer them, but got a text from Duke, saying what time we were going to meet. “I have a meeting to go to.. at twelve,” I told them, rechecking the time. “Oh,” They said, it sounded a little disappointed, but if they were, they didn't show it, “what is it- oh. We have a lunch date. I blanked and forgot. I’m sorry,” I told them. “It’s fine, we can go out for dinner,” they told me. I don’t deserve them, they’re an angel, too good for me. “Alright, if you don’t mind,” I replied to them and sat back down on the bed. “I don’t. But you have you repay me by cuddling me for the next few hours,” they told me and pulled me back against them as I chuckled and said Ok. This double life might be difficult, especially with having to keep it from Robin, but I'll get through it. But I don’t have to worry about that right now, not while I’m in Robin's arms.
dreaming you would come true
intro. pt1. pt2. pt3. pt4. pt5.
AN: i am so sorry this is terrible and i’m pining for this experience. it took so long and im sorry 😭💗 ty for reading
tags: studentlife, jae day6, fluff, college!au, sexual acts implied.
: the one where you meet jae in your second year of college and it’s basically love at first sight. just little excerpts of what i think a relationship w jae would be like c:
2k words
As time goes by, as my feelings grow, I’m becoming more anxious.
Jae was great at many things, playing guitar, singing, annoying you, collecting hoodies, skateboarding (Ehh), but he wasn’t good at one thing.
Losing.
Which is exactly what he was doing at the moment. The boys had decided to play a game of basketball before their first-year friend Dowoon returned home over the break. It was close to midnight and freezing, but the burn of competition heated Jae as he attempted to steal the ball from Younghyun.
“Park Jaehyung, when are you heading back again?” Kim Wonpil had a way of being annoying that totally matched Jae’s wavelength. It pissed him off and simultaneously made him affectionate to the boy.
Last week when Wonpil had walked in on the two of you, Jae had watched as you scolded Wonpil for acting so stern while he sat there shyly. He would never admit that Wonpil had low-key scared him for a second, because he resembled a bunny and it was embarrassing for Jae's pride.
“Ya, Kim Wonpil you should knock! You’re the one who poured the wine last night!” Wonpil had winced at your voice most-likely as hungover as Jae and you.
Jae can remember the cute frown on your face like it was 10minutes ago. He adored you and he had pulled Wonpil aside later on, making sure to get into his good books considering how close you were to him.
“Jae are you gonna answer me, or continue defending terribly?”
“I wouldn’t have to defend terribly if someone could actually guard Dowoon.”
Wonpil rolled his eyes at that, stealing the ball from Younghyun (miraculously). “I’m heading back on Saturday, so you have 3 more days with me and Y/N!” A cheesy, shit-eating grin spread across Jae’s face as he received the ball from Wonpil.
“How are you and Y/N?” Younghyun yelled as he subbed with Sungjin. Sungjin was a funny guy to be around and Jae had met him in the cafeteria one day. He wasn’t awkward but he was different to most guys Jae had met. Nevertheless the 4 guys (excluding Jae.) totally vibed and that’s all Jae cared about.
The more times Jae was reminded of you, the more he wanted to put the ball down and text you. You’d been talking all week about how sad you were that you couldn’t go home for the break. He wanted to stay with you more than ever. The beginning of the relationship was always the most fun and he hated being apart from you. He hadn’t even formally asked to be his girlfriend yet and he was kicking himself for it.
,
“You call this playing?” You grinned watching Jae’s face crack a wide smile. The boys paused the game briefly to greet you. Wonpil mumbled, “Speak of the devil..” and you walked over to him for the sole purpose of shoving him gently.
“Now that Y/N’s here I guess you’ll step up your game, huh?” Younghyun teased Jae only to receive a shove from Jae. (You were one in the same.)
You walked over to the seats, too tired to try and distract the group any longer. Jae had told you earlier in the day that he’d be playing with the boys - which was a common occurance, so you’d busied yourself with trying to find a gift to give him before he left you for the break. After hours of searching, Wonpil had texted you to join them for a Macca’s run at 11pm.
So there you were, shivering slightly because winter had finally settled in. Your eyes were stuck on watching Jae play. His laugh, the cute expression he had while focusing, the way his lanky body swiftly moved. What in the world would bring him happiness that didn't break the bank? (student budget was a b*tch).
Everything about him was really really attractive to you and you couldn’t understand how you’d gotten so lucky to have him. Although he had yet to put a label on it, his arm naturally hung over your shoulder when you were together - which was every other day. You always received the weirdest texts from him throughout the day, and if you weren’t together, the night was when you’d get a “You wanna get boba?” “Let’s go to the skate park!” “Y/N come walk with him :( i’m bored.” All of these messages obviously melted your heart and you could only accept his requests.
However, your time together was running short with Jae flying home for the semester break. As the time grew closer a weird feeling in your stomach grew too, something like anxiousness combined with sadness. Without a label, would he still talk to you? You two never video-called unless you were in the same room trying to annoy each other. And even worse, when he returned would he still want you?
Stuck in your thoughts, you barely noticed the game had ended as Jae placed his denim jacket over your shoulders.
“You’re shivering so much Y/N.” His tone was light while his hands caring, rubbing your shoulders to create warmth. You leaned into his touch, smiling up at him. The thoughts from earlier washed away the minute Jae came into view, which always happened. He felt like home and you were desperate not to let it go.
You both stood and Jae was quick to bring you closer to his side. He wore a beige hoodie and ripped jeans as usual, but he somehow made the basics look so good. “Don’t you wanna walk with the boys? Isn’t Dowoon leaving tomorrow?” You turned to look into Jae’s eyes before realising just how close you were. You could feel his warm breath fan across your lips. Watching the way Jae’s eyes took in all of your features made you feel both flustered and warm. His eyes dropped to your lips and just as he began leaning in, Dowoon’s deep voice shrieked. Everyone froze, eyes on Dowoon who clutched his chest. “I thought I saw a ghost cat, but it was just a real cat!”
Because that was definitely worth cock-blocking. (Read: thanks dowoon.)
After hanging out with the group and eating too many fries, Jae walked you home with Wonpil. All of your soul wanted to ask him to stay by your side that night. He was flying out so soon and he hadn’t slept over since the drunk-blue-hair night, which in your opinion was far too long. You didn’t want to ask in fear that Wonpil would intrude or make things awkward, but you really just wanted to hug and talk for hours even though it totally didn’t suit Jae’s character. He didn’t seem the kind to be awkward but he definitely didn’t seem the kind to initiate the cuddle-session either.
"What's a bet I can stay in your dorm without Wonpil noticing?" With a smirk on his lips and his voice so close to your ear, you shivered unintentionally. Did he just read your mind? Jae watched in amusement, pulling your head into his chest mid step, "Hey Y/N don't get too excited!"
You threw him a bashful smile, egging him on. "You can try."
Wonpil looked back at the two of you suspiciously which in turn left the two of you giggling. You loved that boy like a big-brother.
,
Jae had succeeded. He had to hide behind a door for about 10minutes while Wonpil was in your room, and received a lot of weird glances but it was definitely worth it. The way you stood in front of him in your PJ's was enough to make Jae melt. But he couldn't help but notice the way your eyes glanced around without really paying attention to anything, and the way your hands fiddled with the hem of your shirt nervously.
Something about you seemed off. He tugged the bottom of your shirt to bring you closer, watching your expression closely.
"What's up Y/N?"
Jae couldn't have guessed that would start the water-works but he watched as your face crumbled. Without a second thought he took you in his arms and brushed your hair away from your face. The way your hot tears fell onto his neck made his heart ache, he was confused but the sadness felt as though it radiated through your body and into his. You two had barely been this intimate before, you on his lap and his arms around your waist.
After a few minutes of silence besides your sniffles you pull away from him, wiping his neck with your sweater paws. "I'm sorry, your hoodie is all wet." Jae's thoughts raced and he could care less about his soaked shoulder. He searched your eyes with worry, waving off your statement. Your silence and the way you gazed off into space urged Jae on.
“You look so ugly when you cry, I find it beautiful.” Jae spoke softly, using his thumb to wipe away your tears. (lyrics from their song)
,
You wanted to shove him and glare at him but you couldn’t control the laugh that exited your lips. It was so random and back-handed but with good intention, just like Jae always way.
“You’re not supposed to say that Jae, you’re not supposed to see my cry at all.” Your tone is playful but the tears are still flowing and your voice hoarse. Usually you’d be embarrassed to show this kind of face to the boy you like but it was Jae. The past month had been so stressful and so fun with him. You felt like you finally had someone to mess around with at 3am when you couldn’t escape your thoughts. Finally someone who wanted to be with you without barriers.
The smile on Jae's face washed away his worried expression and gave you the confidence to confess your thoughts.
"Will you still talk to me over the break?" Your voice was meek when you spoke.
It was embarrassing to be so vulnerable and the position you were in didn't help at all. The warmth of being in Jae's arms and the way his thumb rubbed comfortingly on your hips felt so safe.
"Of course I will Y/N." Jae seemed so certain, his words filled with comfort. You sighed a breath of relief, but the suspicion and fear built high in your chest. As if Jae could sense it, he spoke again.
"I'm sorry I didn't ask you to be my girlfriend sooner... I was worried you would think I'm rushing things."
The way he talked with a slight pout made you want to pinch his cute cheeks. Trust Jae not to rush things, he either made decisions based on a whim, or after hours and days of preparation.
"Jae, I like you more than you know... I don't know what it is about you but I feel so at home with you." You could feel the blush rising on your cheeks but the words felt so important. You watched Jae's expression closely, happy to see a small smile.
"I know this is kind of bad timing, but I feel it too. I really like being around you, is there a chance I could call a girl like you mine?" It was so cheesy, the way you sat on his lap suddenly felt overwhelming and perfect. Jae was obviously embarrassed but you could only lean up to quickly kiss him before nodding happily. Home. The feeling was back and it was without worry.
"Thank gosh." Jae's whole body relaxed beneath you and he leaned in again, this time with his grip on your waist a little tighter. The kiss began innocent until you felt his hands run up and down your sides, sending sparks in their trail.
You placed your arms around his neck before swinging your legs to straddle his waist just wanting - craving to feel closer to him.
"I'll show you how much you matter to me." Suddenly Jae's voice was deep and husky as his hands slipped beneath your sweater. The feeling of your hot skin meeting his cold touch filled your stomach with bundles of nerves.
Cuddling and talking would come later... For now the only thing you want to remember is the feeling of Jae’s touch and the shared urge to be closer.
Summary: Though you moved across the country about half a year ago, you are still trying to find your footing in the strange streets of New York. On top of that, you are desperately trying to balance your demanding school life at Midtown School of Science and Technology, where you like everyone but you was much more talented and smarter than you could ever imagine to be. Among those students is the one whom you loathe the most: Peter Benjamin Parker, the boy who’s success both in school and in Stark Industries is constantly shoved in your face. The only person who helps you escape those troubles is Spider-man, the hero of Queens and your crush.
A/N: Hello friends! First I would like to apologize for the delay of the third chapter. Several personal issues kept pilling on during these past few weeks which made it difficult for me to get the motivation to write. Hopefully this won’t happen again, as I was planning on getting a chapter out every 2-3 weeks. With that all said, please enjoy this latest installment! Likes, reblogs and feedback is highly appreciated!
Chapter 3: Pride, Prejudice, and Boba
When MJ and Ned arrived at school the following day, they were completely unprepared for the pettiness their two best friends were about to display towards the other. Both you and Peter refused to acknowledge the other’s existence, and when there were moments in the day that your eyes met they only showed daggers. The tension was suffocating for MJ and Ned, who were trying their hardest to advert their friend’s anger but it was to no avail. The both of you were sure that they didn’t do anything wrong, and that the other is the one to blame for their childish attitude. At one point MJ and Ned just had to give up, and they just had to sit back and watch as you and Peter seethed at each other throughout the day.
On Friday you awoke, groggy and disgruntled. The alarm had interrupted your much needed rest as you were working until 12 a.m. Additionally, you received an email from Ms. Lee, asking that you meet up with Peter again for your tutoring session. The e-mail left a sour taste in your mouth, which you could still feel as you recalled the message whilst getting dressed. Hopefully, the taste could go away with a nice breakfast.
As you headed downstairs, you noticed that your dad was at the dining table by the window, drinking his black cup of coffee while typing away on his laptop. You don’t say anything as you make your way to the fridge, grabbing the tub of cream cheese then snatching a bagel from the bread box on the counter beside it. You began to fix yourself a cream cheese bagel sandwich when your dad spoke up,
“What did you get on your chemistry quiz?” The butter knife you were using to cut the bagel froze in your hand, and you felt the sense of dread weigh over your shoulders again.
“I don’t know,” you lie, resuming your bagel cutting. There is silence, though you could feel his gaze on you, hoping to catch you off guard. In the past, whenever you failed an exam, you would’ve done everything to avoid telling your parents your true grade. It wasn’t an honest tactic, but you feared the wrath of your father if he were to know about your grades. And when he did find out, you had to hide in your room while he yelled insults behind the door. Thankfully, because of your fight regarding your wish to be less dependent on him, it’s been easier to evade his interrogation. Well, almost. You heard him let out a low grumble.
“I was told by your mom that Peter Parker is going to tutor you,” he speaks, “Your councilor called her to let her know.” You continued with your silence and focused on spreading the cream cheese on the bagel in a haste. You knew where he was going with this, and you wanted to get out of the house as soon as possible.
“It’s tragic that he has to be the one tutoring you,” he says with a sarcastic sigh, “If only you weren’t such a lazy brat it could’ve been the other way around. Yet you chose to waste your time fooling around when you should be studying to get to the top. I raised you better than that.” A lump formed in your throat and you tried to swallow it, despite the pain it caused. Instead of saying goodbye to him you instead grabbed the bagel and headed towards the front door, avoiding eye contact with him. When you grabbed your bag and headed out the door, you made sure to shut it with a slam.
The school day came and went with nothing interesting happening, though you and Peter were still giving each other the cold shoulder treatment. The e-mail Ms. Lee sent was still on your mind, though you were hoping that Peter wouldn’t fall through with her demands. This was not the case, though. As you were grabbing your sketchbook from your locker after your last period of the day, you felt your phone buzz in your pocket and take it out only to find a text message from Peter.
Meet me at the library. It read. This made you let out an obnoxiously haughty scoff. There was absolutely no way in hell that you were going to see that stupid boy’s face. You knew if you had to see him again the first thing you’d do was swing a fist as his dumb rectangular face. Then, an idea lit up in your mind, making you smirk mischievously. Why should you have to listen to him? All he did was cause you trouble, and you didn’t need any more of that today. So instead of heading towards the locker, you turn your heals towards the entrance of the school. Making sure to look around for any sign of Peter or Ms. Lee, you blended into the crowd of students pouring out of the school, and made your way towards the nearest subway station.
-
You trudged your way up the exit of the musty-smelling subway station, where you found yourself stepping into NYC’s colorful Chinatown district. This was one of your favorite places to go in Manhattan. Every time you come here (which was very often), you get mesmerized by the aroma from the restaurants, large, bright signs written in Cantonese or Mandarin, and the soundtrack of shop owners offering their wares to anyone passing by them. Despite your parents wanting to actively avoid the area, you absolutely loved it. Plus, it was the home of the best boba tea in NYC.
Weaving through the bustling market area, where sellers were shouting deals in their native tongues as well as English, you made your way to your favorite boba tea joint in the district. It was tucked into a small, secretive courtyard away from the craziness of the main street, where it was inhabited by humble mom-and-pop shops that were nestled under apartment buildings. Just as you entered the alleyway, your phone vibrated. Pulling it out of your green sweatshirt pocket, you saw another test message from Parker, though this one was much more passive-aggressive than the one he had sent you before. You rolled your eyes and angrily shoved your cracked phone back in the pocket, adamant about ignoring your responsibilities today.
You finally made it to Hi-Tea, the boba shop that you have been frequenting ever since you moved to New York. It was a small hole-in-the-wall establishment that you had found on a whim while you and your mom were exploring Chinatown upon your first week arriving in the state. Your mom found the place tacky, but you thought that it’s pastel color palette was quite charming. The glass doors leading you into the shop would always be painted every week to promote the flavor of the week, which you thought was really smart on their end. You practically came here once a week, sometimes twice if you were having an especially bad day. So, because of your frequent visits, you became friendly towards the staff that worked there, in particular Grace and Frankie.
Both of them were in college, though Grace was older than Frankie by a year. Grace was much more outgoing and bubbly than Frankie, who was more reserved and soft spoken. Though you were also pretty shy around strangers, especially college kids, your recurring presence and Grace’s naturally charming personality allowed you to warm up to the two young adults. To your pleasure, you saw from the store’s front window that both of them were occupying the shop today. You excitingly scamper to the door, where upon opening it, the petite golden bells tied to the top alerting the two employees of your presence. They turn to look up and when they both spot you, Grace breaks out into a smile.
“Hey there (Y/N)!” Grace cheerfully greets you as she’s adjusting her cat themed enamel pins on her pastel green apron, “It’s so good to see you! Are you here for your usual? Brown sugar bubble tea with oat milk?” Yeah, you knew that boba was called bubble tea here on the East coast, but because you were an arrogant Angeleno you still referred to the tasty tapioca balls as boba, much to the annoyance of your fellow MSST classmates. You scrunch up your face in thought comically and stroked your chin, earning a giggle from Grace. Upon briefly scanning the menu that was placed on the counter with your eyes, you say “Could I have a jasmine milk tea today?”
“Of course!” she cheerfully exclaims. As she gets to placing your order, her expression changes as if something occurred to her. She looks up at you and asks,
“Wait, aren’t you supposed to be at work today?”
“I can’t work on Fridays anymore,” you reply in a huff.
“Huh? Why not?” she asks, a curious expression upon her face. You began to tell her all that had happened the past few days; meeting with your counselor, her forcing you to be tutored by the one person you despise, and you getting into a very heated verbal fight with said person. Then you told her that because of the circumstances revolving around the tutoring, you were forced to cut your Friday work hours to accommodate to your councilors demands, much to your chagrin. Frankie, who was listening in on the conversation as he was cleaning up the drink assembly station, looks to you and asks,
“Wait, then aren’t you supposed to be at school right now?” You rolled your eyes.
“Yeah, but I decided, fuck it!” you cried and shrugged with raised arms, “I had a shitty past two days! I should treat myself!” Grace and Frankie look over at each other, exchanging expressions of concern and disapproval.
“So,” Grace looks back at you, raising a brow, “you ditched your tutor?”
“Yeah, but I don’t give a shit,” you reply, waving your hand dismissively, “It’s what he gets for being a prick.”
“Still, don’t you think that’s kind of rude?” Frankie questions as he walks to the counter to join in on the conversation, “I mean, I know you guys fought, but can’t you come to some sort of truce?” You couldn’t help but roll your eyes at Frankie’s absurd suggestion.
“Please, I’d rather jump off the Empire State than apologize to that shitbag,” you brashly say, rummaging through your backpack as you looked for your wallet, “No way would I say sorry to someone who constantly makes my life a living hell.” Grace and Frankie looked at each other, unsure of what to say.
“But...what if he catches you ditching?” Grace asks as she looks back at you, dismayed.
“There’s no way he can catch me,” you reply with a cheeky smirk, handing over the due amount for the boba to Winnie, “And even if he did, what’s he going to do? Drag me back to school?” To this you let out a short laugh, though Frankie and Grace didn’t seem to find this amusing. Frankie gives you one last judgemental look but says nothing, then goes to work on your order. Winnie opened her mouth to say something but then closed it, deciding it was pointless to get you to see the wrong in your doing. She takes the amount and gives you back the change, though you drop it in the tip jar for them. You moved to wait patiently by the pick-up section of the store, and in just about two minutes Frankie presented you with your drink. You took it excitingly and bid goodbye to the two young adults before heading back outside into the courtyard. A vibration from your phone rumbled in your jacket pocket, so you took it out again to see yet another text from penis Parker.
Where are you? It read, You need to get here now or else. You narrowed your eyes at the text as you read it again, then let out a pretentious scoff. What the hell, was he trying to threaten you now? Little shit was getting a bit too confident! You shoved your phone back into your pocket and focused back on your chilled treat. Just as you were about to stab the plastic cover with the straw, something from above grabbed at the drink and yanked it right out of your hand. Bewildered, you looked at your hand then around your surroundings.
“Shouldn’t you be at school right now?” a voice called out to you. You looked around until your eyes wandered up then widened. Spider-man was casually sitting on the edge of a fire escape, looking down at you with your boba tea in his hand
“You can’t drink that without the straw, you know,” you say loudly, holding up the straw. Suddenly, a web sling shoots at your hand and recoils back to its sender, who thanks you with a nod.
“You didn’t answer my question,” he says, stabbing the top of your drink with the straw, “You’re supposed to be at school right now, right?”
“N-no,” you said, looking away from him.
“Really?” he holds up your beverage and looks at it, “Because Delmar told me you moved your Friday shifts to Thursday since you had a study date with Peter Parker today.” Gosh damn Delmar and his blabbermouth, now you were caught in the act! You shoved your hands in your jacket pocket and continued to look at everything around you but him.
“Care to tell me why you’re near the Lower East Side instead?” he asks, looking down at you. His tone sounded much less playful than usual, making you feel uneasy.
“I-,” you were flustered, unsure of what excuse to come up with on the spot. Then, you looked up at him, brows furrowed and ask,
“W-why are you so concerned?”
“I’m concerned because you ditched someone, which, by the way, is a pretty shit thing to do.” he replies cooly. You then watch as he lifts his mask up to his nose and takes a sip of your drink. At this moment you realized that this was the first time you had ever seen any part of Spider-man unveiled. Though you wished that he wasn’t high up, as the angle made it a bit hard for you to see much of his features. “Mmm, is this jasmine tea? I like the aftertaste. Very floral.”
“Did you steal my boba so you could lecture me?” You loudly ask him and you put your hands on your hips.
“Not necessarily,” he says with a shrug, taking another sip of your drink, “Though the bubble tea is a nice bonus treat.”
“Why does my personal life concern you?” you said, crossing your arms, “This is between me and that dumbfuck. And that dumbfuck deserves to get his ass ditched.”
“That ‘dumbfuck’ is willing to help you out,” he simply says, then takes another sip, “By the way, I think you’re being a little harsh with those insults of yours.”
“Not my fault I tell it like it is,” you snap back, “He’s just wasting my time and his! I don’t need his help, or anyone’s! Plus, he has no idea how to tutor anyone! You should’ve seen how irritable he was!”
“Well, it’s his first time tutoring, right?” he asks you, “Maybe you need to cut him some slack. He means well.” To this you let out a short, cynical laugh.
“So what? He’s supposed to be the smartest kid in our grade!” you cry “It isn’t rocket science; it should be easy for him! Just like everything else is!”
“Have you ever tutored someone before?” he inquires, looking down at you. You didn’t respond. Instead, you ask him,
“What’s your deal with defending him, anyway?”
“Because you’re being unfair to someone who’s trying to help you,” he replies, and you couldn’t help but laugh at his ridiculous claim.
“Help me?!” you shout out passively, “He does nothing but make my life miserable! I don’t want his help!”
“You need it whether you like it or not,” he says sternly, which you found was very out of character for him, “Just like that time I saved you from getting hit by that taxi.” The anger that was boiling inside of you was reaching its peak. All rational thoughts were replaced with the need to defend your ego. And when your ego got involved, it brought out the worst in you
“I didn’t ask for your help!” you spat back out of anger.
“So what should I have done?!” he angrily shouts back, “Let you get killed?!”
“Maybe!” you roar back, your voice echoing within the courtyard. A heavy silence hung in the air, as the two of you glared at each other, a familiar setting to Wednesday. Your fists were clenched so tightly you could feel your shoulders strain. Finally, the masked hero lets out an irritated scoff.
“Fine, if you don’t like my help,” he stands up from the railing of the balcony, “Don’t ever expect it again.” You felt your heart drop into your stomach, regret immediately sweeping into your senses. You just fucked up big time. You wanted to shout back an apology, but before you could he shoots a web sling at a nearby building and begins to swing. You ran after him, calling out to him in anguish, but he was much too fast. Soon you found yourself back in the middle of Chinatown, desperately looking around for Spider-man as he disappeared into the city, leaving you guilt-ridden and ashamed.
-
Misery plagued your emotions for the rest of your Friday through Sunday. All you could do was wallow in your sorrow over pissing off your crush. You couldn’t feel more humiliated!
You wondered, though if you were being as unreasonable as Spider-man claimed. Of course not! you think countering yourself. That little twerp always acts like he’s the best at everything and constantly rubs it in your face! Well, not literally, but it happens when he gets the highest exam scores, when he wins first prize at the school’s annual science fair, and when he boasts about how he’s working for Stark! Ugh, he just pisses you off!
It annoyed you how enamored your parents were by his success. Why couldn’t they set the bar lower, like comparing you to Flash! You’d at least beat him! But no, it’s always Peter. “If you studied harder, you’d be at the same level as Peter!”, “I bet Peter gets straight A’s in all of his classes!”, “You should pick a more practical major, like Peter!”. The constant praise they give him in contrast to the scolding you received only fueled your hatred for him. And Spider-man knew this! You had expressed your dismay with your classmate several times since you met him so it only made you more upset that he decided to defend Peter!
Yet you still felt guilty about snapping at him so harshly. Not only did you ruin your friendship with him, but all chance of finding out who his true identity was! Now you were never going to see him again! It took all the willpower you had in you to resist slamming your head against a wall. This regret was consuming you alive, so in order to relieve yourself of it, you turned to MJ for advice.
On Sunday you related to her the past two days as well as your emotional roller coaster while watching Pride and Prejudice through facetime together (the 2005 version, though MJ was very vocal about the historical inaccuracies of the costumes, but you didn’t care because Kiera Knightly was so damn good looking in this). She listened to you intently as she watched you explain everything, and as you wrapped up she leaned back onto her bed frame, taking all of this in.
“Well, that’s...something,” she finally says after a long pause, “You managed to piss off Spider-man...that’s pretty incredible.”
“Now isn’t the time to be sarcastic, MJ!” you cry out as you hang your head in shame. MJ was the only person you had confined to about your friendship with the blue and red hero of Queens, as well as your harboring feelings for him. MJ teases you about it every now and then, but she overall has kept her word of secrecy on the matter, which you greatly appreciated.
“You’re going to think I’m crazy,” she continues, “But I think he had a point about Peter. Listen, I love to poke fun at that little white boy, but you take it to a whole other level.” This makes you frown in response.
“He deserves it,” you mumble back, but just loud enough for her to hear. Now it was her turn to frown.
“Does he?” she asks you, “I can’t believe I’m taking his side, but Peter’s hasn’t done anything wrong. I think your jealousy is taking things out of context.”
“I’m not jealous of him!” you claim, “Why should I be!? I don’t want to be a stupid science nerd like him.”
“I’m a science nerd,” MJ points out, “So is Ned. Are we stupid?”
“You’re different,” you retort back if a huff, “You’re cool and weird but in a good way.”
“As I should be,” she replies with a shrug, “But I still think that you have been a bit too hard on him. Which is kind of funny, because I remember that you had a crush on him.”
“T-That was in the beginning of the year!” you hastily quip back, feeling your cheeks flush up out of embarrassment, “That was before he started getting on my nerves!” It’s true, the first time you had met Peter, you were at a game shop with your mom buying a console. It was the first week since you moved from Los Angeles to Queens, and the both of you were still trying to navigate the city. To make you feel better about the move, your mom promised to buy you a console that had just been released which you had your eye on ever since it was announced.
When you were in the game shop, you noticed him with Ned, who was accompanying him. The two of them were gushing over the release of a new Star Wars video game which had just been released recently. His smile was the first thing that attracted you. It really lit up his whole face so nicely that you couldn’t help but blush. Then you remembered the horror you felt when your overly extroverted mother approached them and started sparking up a conversation with them (her excuse was that they seemed to be about your age, which she wasn’t wrong about, but it seemed a bit unnecessary!). Peter then noticed you, awkwardly standing a few feet behind your mom with a bag of cupcakes that she had gotten from the city’s famous cupcake shop. He and Ned introduced themselves to you, and the kind smile he gave to you made your heart jump.
The memory made you frown. Now you just felt embarrassed for having a crush on him. Yet again, you didn’t expect that you would be attending the same school, where you found out just how incredibly talented he was. It impressed you in the beginning, as soon as your parents got wind of the bright young boy with the Stark internship, it all blew up in your face. Watching you reminisce upon this, MJ asks you,
“You sure you still don’t have a crush on him?” You answer with a profound and loud no, which MJ interprets as a good time to drop the subject. So decided to get back on track.
“You’re going to hate me for suggesting this,” MJ says, then takes a bite at a pretzel stick from the bowl she had beside her, “But I think you should apologize to Peter.”
“WHAT?” you shout so loud that the crows in the tree out in the backyard were startled.
“Here me out,” MJ begins, her hands held up in defense, “You feel guilty about yelling at Spider-man, right?” You reply with a nod.
“Well, wasn’t the reason why he was upset with you was because you ditched Peter? Maybe if you apologize to Peter, Spider-man could forgive you.”
“I don’t need to apologize to him!” you retort, crossing your arms in a huff.
“Even if you don’t want to, you should,” she replies, taking another bite of a pretzel stick, “It’s that or you never see your Spider-boyfriend again.” This makes you frown out of dissatisfaction, and you ask her,
“How would Spider-man even know that I apologized to him?!”
“Doesn’t Peter work at Stark? I remember him mentioning that he and Spider-man were buds. You could ask Peter if you could talk to Spider-man.” she answers. Though you doubted the possibility of this happening, MJ might not be wrong. If what she’s saying is true then that means if you apologized to Peter then you could make up with Spider-man!
“How do I make up with Peter?” you ask her with a determined look on your face. MJ smirks in satisfaction, pleased to have gotten to you. She tells you,
“First you admit what a big dingus you’ve been towards him.” This makes your frown, much to the amusement of your friend. She continues,
“Then you should get to know him better, not as who you think he is, but for who he really is.” You frown in thought.
“Look at Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy’s relationship, for example,” she suggests, “At first she judges him based on her assumptions about him. She thinks he’s stuck up, cold, rude, and selfish, which leads her to probably one of the best roasts in literary history. Though it turns out that he’s just very socially awkward and that she was misled by false information about him.”
“What’chya getting at?” you ask her, suspicious of her ramblings
“Well, maybe like Elizabeth, you’re letting your pride misjudge Peter.” she proposes.
“Maybe my pride is correct.” you say firmly.
“God, you are so stubborn!” MJ groans, “Do you want to see Spider-man or not?!” This makes you shut your mouth, and you allow her to continue.
“Okay,” she lets out a huff, “Whether you’re right or wrong, taking the time to get to know Peter will benefit you. You could learn a lot about him. And who knows? Maybe you can find out something about Spider-man, too?” This peaks your interest. Could she be right about that? You had no idea how close Spider-man and Peter were, but the tutoring lessons could be helpful in trying to use Peter to figure out who the masked hero was. It sounded sleazy, but it felt like good motivation to make up with him.
“Tomorrow, as soon as you get to school, talk to him privately and apologize to him,” she tells you, “And sound like you mean it, even if you don’t.” You let out a groan. It was annoying that you had to make up with him, but with MJ’s suggestion (and your grade on the line) you knew you were out of options. It was either suck it up and go with it or fail your classes and lose the potential freedom from your parents. As you and MJ continued to watch the movie, you could yourself ponder over your first feelings towards Peter again.
-
The next day at school you arrived early in order to locate Peter. The weather had chilled considerably, so today you dawned your red down coat that was perfect for the cool, overcast morning. You hustled yourself quickly to the lockers, hoping to catch Ned and Peter. Instead, you spotted Ms. Lee by your locker, staring down at you from across the hallway. His made you immediately stop you in your tracks, a cold sweat rushing throughout your body. She beckoned you to come towards her, to which you sheepishly complied. By the sour look on her face, you could tell you were in deep shit. She greets you with a cross-sounding “Good morning”, which you meekly wished her one as well.
“Mr. Fill informed me that you didn’t show up to meet with Peter on Friday,” she tells you, “I was also told that you two also made quite the scene on Wednesday. Would you care to tell me what happened?” You gulped. There was no way you could fabricate a response believable enough for her to take right now. She was visibly upset with you, and you could feel it weigh you down. The right thing to do was to tell the truth, but you were horrified by what would come out of that (see: your parent’s reaction). As you struggled to come up with a response, you didn’t notice that someone was approaching the two of you.
“Hey (Y/N)!” a familiar voice called out to you. You turned about to see who it belonged to and were very shocked to see a cheery Peter Parker walking up to you.
“You left this at my place on Friday,” he hands you a blue spiral bound notebook, which you take with utter confusion. Ms. Lee shared your perplexed expression as well, looking at the teen boy with a raised brow.
“Good morning Mr. Parker,” she greets him, regaining her authoritative aura, “I was just asking (Y/N) about your study session on Friday. Mr. Fill told me that while you were at the library on Friday, (Y/N) was nowhere to be seen. Did this have something to do with your bickering on Wednesday?” You looked over at Peter, wide-eyed with terror at what he would say. Knowing him, he was probably going to use this to his advantage and throw you under the bus-
“Oh, right!” he snaps his fingers as if he remembered something, then turns to Ms. Lee, “(Y/N) texted me the day before and said that the library was too distracting for them. So we agreed that we would study at my place from now on. For some reason I forgot about that and was waiting for them until I remembered! It’s my bad, Ms. Lee.”
…Huh?
There was no way you were hearing this right now. Was Peter covering for you? Was this a prank? It had to be, right?! You sneaked a pinch on yourself and surely enough, this was all happening in real time. While you were busy being confused by your current reality, Ms. Lee and Peter continued conversing.
“I see,” she says, though she sounded suspicious, “And I presume you two made up?”
“Of course!” he replies gleefully, giving you a nudge to help him sell the lie. You snap out of your confusion and give her a hasty nod.
“Well, I’m glad you were able to work things out,” she says with a pleased smile, then turns to you, “I do think it’s better for you to work in a more personal setting than a public one. And if it works, then who am I to complain.” She then bids you two a good day, where you and Peter both watch her walk down the hall. Just as she was out of earshot, you decided that this would be the perfect chance to apologize to him.
“Peter,” you quickly turned to him, “I-”
“Meet me at the football bleachers during break,” he cuts you off coolly, still looking towards the hall, “We need to talk.” The first warning bell chimes throughout the school, and the hall begins to bustle with high schoolers desperate to make it to their first period on time. So he leaves you alone, perplexed with all that just occurred and anxious for what’s to come during break.
-
As soon as biology wrapped up, you sprinted past some students towards MSST’s football field. The chilled air hit you as soon as you opened the doors to the field , tickling your cheeks. You jogged across the football field, where students were spending their break tossing playing catch, jogging around the field, or just sitting on the grass and chatting. Halfway into your jog you spotted Peter, who was sitting in the mid-section of the bleachers. You hurried yourself towards his direction quickly, the anticipation clenching your stomach. He notices you and gives you a surprised look.
Guess he didn’t expect me to show up, you think to yourself as you trudge up the metal bleachers. You finally reached him and sat beside him (leaving space between the two of you, of course) in a huff. There was silence at first, besides the sounds of the schoolyard. You wondered if you should speak up first, but for some reason you couldn’t think of anything to say. The cold air made you shove your hands in your pockets, and you look towards him, where he continued to look out to the field, a very serious expression plastered across his face. This was the first time you had ever seen the awkwardly goofy Peter Parker look so stern, and though you would usually find pleasure in seeing him so pissed, it actually scared you a little. After what felt like an eternity, Peter finally spoke up,
“You have a real shit attitude, you know.” The cool bluntness takes you by surprise. In all of the months you have bullied Peter, this was the first time he has ever cussed at you. You wondered how long he’s been waiting to do that. He exhales a long, controlled breath and continues to talk,
“I would love to know what I did for you to hate me so much. Because last time I checked, I’ve been nothing but nice to you since you moved here. Was it something I said? Something I did?!” He turns to you, his glare piercing through your soul as he waits for a response. You opened your mouth, but words evaded you. For the first time Peter has left you speechless. The cockiness you usually had towards him was nowhere to be found. No snarky comeback, no rolling of the eyes, all you could do was gape at him. Peter, seeing that you weren’t answering, turns back to look at the field and continue speaking,
“I’ll be honest, I don’t think this is going to work out. Us working together. I’m going to talk to Ms. Lee and see if she can set you up with someone else.” Shit, this wasn’t good! You were going to lose your chance at apologizing to Spider-man! You had to do something, quick!
“No!” you reply with a shout, grabbing his arm out of impulse. The shout was a little too loud as it echoes throughout the field, catching the attention of everyone there. He looks at you, startled by both the shout and the grip. Noticing the eyes turned to you and Peter, a blush flushing your cheeks. You immediately retreat your hand as students went back to minding their own business, then take a breath to control yourself.
“I-I mean,” you looked at him, sheepishly. Come on, (Y/N), it’s now or never!
“I’m sorry.” you say.
To say Peter was shocked was an understatement. He gave you the most puzzled you have ever seen anyone give you, and who could blame him? An apology from you wasn’t what he was expecting from you. He thought the most you would do was scoff and walk away, unbothered, so now he was caught off guard.
“I’m sorry for being such a huge asshole on Wednesday” you continue, forcing yourself to look him in the eyes, “And for ditching you on Friday. It was uncalled for. I should’ve talked to you instead of ignoring you.”
“I’m so sorry,” you repeat, “I still want to work with you. Please forgive me.” There was silence yet again, and you could see that Peter was still processing your apology. You look at him, concerned and wondering if he was malfunctioning because he hadn’t said a word. He finally lets out an exhale, and you felt relieved that you hadn’t short circuited him. Finally, he says,
“Okay, I forgive you.” he says. You blink in surprise.
“What?” you say.
“I forgive you,” he repeats, amused by your reaction. Though today was just full of unexpected surprises, you felt a sense of relief from his words. However, a sense of guilt sat in your stomach, remembering that you were doing this for your own personal gain.
As long as he doesn’t find out, you have nothing to worry about, you convince yourself, though the feeling didn’t go away.
“Though if we’re going to continue working together, I suggest we make my lie a reality.” he says.
“What do you mean?” you ask him quizzically.
“I mean that you actually come over and study at my place.” he says. You widen your eyes in surprise. Was he being serious?! It was impressive that he wanted to be so committed to his fabricated tale, but didn’t this seem like a little much?
“A-are you sure?” you ask, perplexed by the idea. He nods.
“I am,” he says, “My aunt wouldn’t mind. She likes the company, anyway.” You take a minute to think this through. Going to Peter’s place would mean you were going to spend much more time with him, considering the travel time from Midtown to Queens. And there would be no doubt that Flash would catch you two together and relentlessly tease you for being with his rival. However, being at his place means that you could get one step closer to finding out more about Spider-man. This was an opportunity you couldn’t refuse. You decided to take up his proposal.
“I’m in.” you finally tell him.
“Okay,” he says, rubbing his hands, “Because if Ms. Lee found out I lied to her we’re dead meat.”
“Let’s shake on it,” you tell him, then hold your hand out towards him. You wait for him to take it, but instead he says,
“I want you to promise that you’re not going to ditch me again,” he says, “I’m doing this to help you pass.” This pinches you in the gut. The guilt you had felt before returned, making you second guess the sincerity of your actions. Why is he taking this so seriously, you wondered, does he really care about whether or not you pass? What benefit is he getting out of this. You didn’t have time to ponder this, so you shook off the thoughts and sincerely say,
“I promise.” Peter watches you, looking for any signs of feigning, but you held yourself up long enough for him to finally take your hand. You give each other a firm shake, settling on your agreement. As you pull your hands away from each other, you remember something.
“Oh, I should give this back to you.” you say to him as you grab your backpack. He watches as you rummage through it, your eyes lighting up when you finally locate it. You pull out the blue spiral-bound notebook he had given you in the morning.
“I think you’ll need this,” you say, holding out the notebook to him.
“Oh, thanks, I need this,” he says, taking it from your hands, “U-um, so do you want to meet up Wednesday after school?”
“Sure.” you say, giving him an awkward smile, to which he returns. Good, now your plan can kick off. All you had to do now was get through studying with Peter. Maybe MJ is right, it might not be all that bad. As the bell rang the two of you headed to your next class together, though the both of you were unaware that a folded slip of paper from Peter’s notebook was not sitting at the bottom of your backpack.
-
On Wednesday, you were waiting at the school’s front gate, as you promised. The chilled weather made you bury yourself into your coat, and you just hoped Peter would get out soon. He told you via text that he had to grab something from the chemistry room, and though you offered to wait for him by the classroom he insisted you waited for him outside. Watching students pass by, you began to wonder about Peter’s aunt. You had never seen her before, but MJ told you that she was very pretty and was very protective of her nephew. You then realized that Peter has definitely talked to her about you, and now you were beginning to grow anxious. You wouldn’t blame her for wanting to take you down for being a shithead to her nephew, but you obviously didn’t want to deal with her wrath. You could only hope that she wouldn’t be at home so you could be spared.
A tap on your shoulder breaks you from your thoughts and you look to see who touched you, only to be facing Peter.
“Ready to head out?” he asks you, motioning his head towards the closest subway station entrance. You nod, so the two of you begin to make your way towards Queens.
The two of you didn’t talk as you headed down to the subway station, and upon entering the car you grimaced over how it was practically full of people. The next train wouldn’t be until twenty minutes though, so the both of you squeezed your way into the crowd. The both of you were practically shoulder to shoulder, with you gripping the nearest stabilizing pole and Peter keeping himself up with the rail above him. Being so close to him made you feel so uncomfortable from the awkwardness, and you tried your best to avoid eye contact with him as you guys rode. That would only last so long, though. Halfway through the ride you felt your phone buzz in your pocket. Foolishly, you let go of the pole to retrieve it, but you didn’t realize that you were reaching another stop. The cart began to halt, the force of it all making you lose your footing. You tried to re-stabilize yourself but you felt your body fall backward, making you let out a scared yelp. Suddenly, you felt a hand grab your waist, stopping you from falling on top of the surrounding passengers. You turn and see it was Peter who had caught you. He pulls you back up and tugs you near him, making you even closer to him than before.
“Are you okay?” he asks you, sounding genuinely concerned. Still dazed from the catch, you nod back and straighten yourself up. You realized that this is the closest you have ever been to Peter, and he seemed to recognize this revelation two and the two of you were stuck in this position for what felt like eternity. He suddenly realizes that he’s still got his arm around your waist, and he immediately retracts it, and you noticed that his cheeks were a slight tint of pink. You took a small step away from him to grab the pole again, and for the remainder of the ride the two of you avoided eye contact.
Soon the stop to Queens approached, and the two of you hopped out of the train car. You followed Peter closely as he navigated through the bustling Queens and eventually got to his apartment complex. Like all the buildings in the area, it was much smaller in size compared to the giants in Manhattan (though you didn’t mind; tall buildings weren’t your favorite thing). After he buzzed in, he let you inside of the complex, and like a duckling you followed him up two flights of stairs and into the second story hallway. Soon you were watching him as he approached a eggshell-\colored door with the numbers 205 plated in bronze above the peephole. He grabs his keys and puts them into the worn door handle, and with a twist and a click he pushes the door open and enters his apartment, where you slowly but carefully enter in suit.
While taking off your shoes you gazed around the space, which was small but it didn’t feel cramped. Peter leads you to the dining area, which was connected to both the kitchen and the living room. Upon the table were several papers and letters, to which Peter apologizes for and quickly gathers up the mess to make space for both of your study materials. Once it was clear of it’s chaos, you slink yourself into the bench situating your bag to left as he sits himself on the right side of the table.
“My aunt May told me she’ll be working late today, so don’t worry about any distractions,” he tells you, pulling his backpack beside him. This makes you internally exhale in relief. He goes into good host mode, offering you snacks and water but you declined it politely since you felt weirded out by your rival trying to be nice to you. The both of you shift uncomfortably in your seats, waiting for the other to speak up so the tension could be broken. Peter, always trying his best, decides to start,
“O-okay! Let’s get started! Um…” He looks at you as he begins to fiddle with his hands nervously, “We can work on inter-molecular forces! Or maybe we should go back to the basics and review atoms and ions? O-or look over the periodic table?” You could tell by his body language that he was trying to be careful with your words, considering how you reacted last time. Though you were slightly amused by how hard he was trying, it did make you feel a bit bad for your reaction last week. You were starting to reconsider what Spider-man had said. You realized that you should probably respond before he throws out more suggestions, so you say,
“Can we work on the quiz from last week? I mean, we got it back today, so maybe it’ll be good to look over it.” Peter was quite surprised by your input, and immediately you feared that you had said something wrong. Expecting to receive some sort of snarky comment, you were amazed when he smiles and agrees,
“Y-yeah! S-sounds good!”
It was quite embarrassing for you to see him look at the 19% grade that was scribbled in bright red on your quiz, while he gloated a proud 100%. Without thinking you made a stank face, until Peter pointed it out while he was looking over your quiz answers. You immediately dropped it, feeling embarrassed at getting caught, though you could help but stare at his perfect grade. For you, it was rare to see those triple digits on your assignments and tests, and when you were gifted with that lucky gem you felt invincible. Is that what Peter feels whenever he gets his scores back, or is it so common for him that he just shrugs it off? Before you could sink into your thoughts even more, Peter flips the quiz back to the front page and looks up at you.
“You didn’t finish the quiz?” he asks you, a brow raised, “Did something happen?” Immediately you felt ashamed, but you tried to hold your ground, not wanting to expose it to Peter. Instead, you say with attitude,
“Why’s that a problem? I just didn’t finish it. Happens to the best of us.” Peter gives you a look, not being fooled by your act.
“Did you run out of time?” he asks you. You didn’t respond, but instead looked away from him, which gave him confirmation.
“I noticed you got stuck on question three, and I get it, I had a though time with that one, too.” he tells you, looking back at the question.
“Don’t try to humble yourself.” you quip back.
“I’m not!” he cries, “Really!” You look at him as you’re not convinced, making Peter sigh in defeat.
“Look, why don’t we just go over this question and the ones you didn’t answer? Then I can get a better read on what’s troubling you with this subject.” You made a small groan, but reluctantly agreed to the proposal, and for the next two hours the two of you went through the quiz. Unlike last time, where he was just talking you ear off, Peter instructed you to write down notes and even re-do the questions, which actually turned out to be much more helpful to you. A few times Peter had to coax questions out of you, which was probably the hardest thing for you to do since you feared ridicule over what you asked. However, Peter didn’t find them ridiculous at all, and would even provide a simpler, straight to the point answer that was much easier to comprehend than Mr. Cobwell’s complex ones. After what felt like forever, the both of you were beginning to exhibit signs of burnout. Peter caught onto this after he watched you stare at your notebook in a daze.
“Let’s call it a day,” he suggests, stretching his arms out to relieve the tension built in them.
“Yes, please,” you mumble, blinking hard as your eyes were tiring out, “I think my brain is going to fry up if I look at another molecular equation.” While you were packing your stuff up, you looked out the window beside you and noticed that it’s already getting dark outside. You wondered if you’ll be back home in time for dinner. Not that you were anticipating it, anyway. The sound of keys being inserted into the apartment alarm the two of you. You and Peter look at the door, which opens to reveal a very beautiful middle aged woman, and you could help but gape at her aura.
“Hiya Pete!” she happily exclaims as she takes off her jacket and hands it up on the hooks next to the door, “So sorry for being late, the manager had me sweep before I clocked out.” Realization hits you like a brick. She’s Peter's aunt?! Well, MJ wasn’t wrong about her looks, but you were not expecting her to be this attractive. It seems like she could feel your eyes on her, because she immediately takes notice of you.
“Pete, who is this?” she asks, pointing to you. You feel your body freeze, remembering that you were most likely going to meet your maker when she finds out who you are.
“Oh, this is (Y/N),” Peter says, pointing his thumb to you, “The classmate I’m tutoring, remember? They moved from California last summer?” Out of fear you forced yourself to stand up straight and gave her a small, shy wave.
“I-it’s nice to meet you, M-ms. Parker!” you stutter sheepishly. May took a second to remember your name, and when she recognizes her eyes light up in surprise. She looks over at you, then to Peter. May raises her brows at Peter as asks him,
“Are they…?” To which Peter nods in response. You watched anxiously have their silent conversation, trying to decipher what on earth they were talking about. Was it about the bullying? Crud, you were going to be in deep shit! You glanced at the door, thinking that you should just book it, until May’s expression melts and is replaced with a bright, welcoming smile.
“Oh! You’re (Y/N)!” his aunt exclaimed with delight, then immediately makes a b line up to you, “You’re the one that works at Delmar’s, right?! Peter has told me so much about you!”
“R-really?!” you expressed with confusion.
“Oh don’t worry, nothing bad,” she assures you, waving her hand dismissively, “Actually, quite the opposite!” This makes you turn to Peter, where you give him the most perplexed look you could give a person. Did Peter not tell his aunt about how you’ve treated him? If not, why would he withhold this information from her? Peter reads your expression, but instead of saying anything he looks the other way and rubs the back of his neck. Okay, you needed to ask him about this another time.
“I was just about to invite Peter out for some Thai food!” she tells you, “Would you like to come with us?” Though you were flattered by the invitation, you felt like it wouldn’t be a good idea to tag along, so you say
“I think I should head home. I don’t want to overstay my wel-'' Before you could finish, an incredibly loud gargle emitted from your stomach. You blushed, horrified and betrayed by your own stomach, as Peter stifled a laugh. You give him a glare, making him shut up, which May finds very amusing.
-
It seems like every other day the world kept challenging your expectations.
Who would’ve guessed that you would be spending your Wednesday evening dining with your rival and his aunt at their favorite Thai restaurant located five minutes away from them? MJ was going to have a field day when you tell her this tomorrow. Well, at least this was better than eating at home, you thought to yourself. You and Peter were seated beside each other, while his aunt sat across from her nephew. The three of you were helping yourselves with servings of the sour and spicy tom yum soup, the sweet but flaming yellow curry, and juicy larb lettuce wraps (Peter’s favorite, or so his aunt claims).
“I’m so glad your mother agreed to let me take you out for dinner, dear,” May says with a smile, “I can finally get to know you a little better!”
“U-um, yeah. I’m kind of surprised she let me come.” you admit to her, then take a sip of your serving of soup.
“Why is that?” she asks you. It would be awkward to admit to her that you kind of expected your mom to make you come home to eat, which would have saved you from this very odd situation you got yourself into. On the other hand, it did save you from having to spend dinner with your parents. It was a strange blessing in disguise.
“My mom is usually strict about me going out with people she hasn’t met before.” you tell her, which was true. Your mom has always been adamant about meeting people you hang out with, though you usually tried to avoid such as she is pretty judgemental about other people. Thankfully, you have been able to save MJ from her unfair shrewdness. It also explains why you never mentioned to her about your acquaintance with Spider-man, as you knew she’d have a handful of shit to say about him. To you, the more you had your parents out of your personal life, the more at peace you were.
“I can understand why,” May says after she swallows her bite of yellow curry, “Especially since you guys are still new to the area. New York is full of wacky characters, after all. Wouldn’t want you to get mixed up with the wrong kinds of people.” You take a glance at Peter, who hasn’t said much during the conversation, instead carefully watching the two of you as he munches down some larb.
“So Peter told me you work at Delmar’s,” she says, “Why is someone as young as you working for him? Especially during junior year?”
“Oh, I wanted to earn some extra cash,” you explain to her, “I want to be more financially independent, you know? So I was looking at other service and retail jobs, however the ones that had openings were full time or had a strict part time arrangement, which wouldn’t work out for school. But Delmar was nice enough to be compliant with my school schedule, so he took me in.”
“Wow, lucky you!” she exclaims with a smile, “Then you must like working there, huh?”
“I mean, it’s a bit boring at times, but it has its perks.” you tell, thinking about a certain someone. This makes your heart heavy again, making you look down at your food.
“Has Delmar told you about what happened to that place last year?” she asks you.
“Oh, you mean the explosion caused by those bank robbers?” you say, perking your head up, “Yeah, he mentions it every once in a while. He always talks about how Spider-man saved him and Murph from the wreckage.”
“Really?” May asks, an amused smile creeping upon her face as she looks over at Peter, who you noticed had froze up mid-bite.
“Yeah,” you say, raising your brow at your classmate’s odd behavior. You turn back to her and tell her, “Actually, Spider-man was one of the reasons I got hired by Delmar.”
“Is that so?” she asks with a delighted tone, her eyes watching her nephew as his eyes shift from her to you. This was just like their weird silent conversation at the apartment! Were they always like this? Maybe this is where Peter gets his uncanny behavior from. You had to pretend to not be bothered by it, so you continue,
“Yeah...he actually introduced me to Delmar a few weeks into my move. I was trying to get to know the Queens area a little more so I took the bus to this area. However about two hours into exploring I got completely lost, and on top of that I had left my house in a rush so I didn’t check how much battery life my phone had, so it had died. I tried to ask around for help but no one bothered, and I pretty much thought I was screwed.” You paused for a moment, feeling like you were saying too much, only to notice d that Peter and May were listening to you intently. Realizing you could continue, you say,
“But by sheer luck, Spider-man was in the area, and he found me by chance. I told him my situation and he offered to take me to a bodega that was selling portable chargers, and since he was the only other person I knew at the time I went with him. And that bodega was Delmar’s! He introduced me to him, and told him about my situation. Since Delmar was such a fan of Spider-man, he actually allowed me to charge my phone in the outlet behind the counter, but I didn’t have a charging cable so Spider-man offered to pay for one.
“While I was waiting for my phone to charge Delmar was telling Spider-man that he was looking for a part-time employee, as his son who used to help him out was off to college in New Jersey. I mentioned that I was looking for work, but Delmar was hesitant about taking me in. For some reason Spider-man vouched for me, and because Delmar is a Spider-man fanboy he agreed to consider me. Next week I got a call from Delmar asking if I’d like to take on the job and I said yes.”
As you wrap up your tale, May was still watching you, seemingly fascinated by it. Peter, on the other hand, had resumed eating, but his expression had changed into a serious one.
“Now that I think about it, I never paid him back for the charger,” you say without thinking.
“Well, Pete here knows Spider-man,” May informs you, making Peter choke on the larb he was currently chewing on.
“Y-yes, I am aware of this,” you say with a forced smile, “Everyone in our school knows about that.”
“Well, maybe Peter can help you out with paying him back, if you want,” she suggests. This makes your eyes perk up in hope. Maybe your initial mission will be finished sooner than you thought! You were just about to express your willingness for this, but Peter jumps into the conversation,
“I-I think Spider-man doesn’t care if you paid him back or not,” he says, still recovering from his sudden choking, “He was just happy to help you out. A-also he’s been really busy lately, so it’s been hard for me to get into contact with him.” Damn it! You hiss internally. You try your best to hide your disappointment, but May seemed to have caught onto it.
“Well, maybe next time you run into him!” May reassures you, but you highly doubt this. For a moment you thought you were going to be ten steps ahead, and now you felt like you were all the way back to the start. For the remainder of dinner, May carried on with talking, while both you and Peter continued to silently eat your food.
-
After the three of you finished up dinner, May offered that she drive you home, but you politely declined and said that you’d just walk to your bus stop. So then she offered that her and Peter escort you to your stop and see you off safely. Once all of you reached it, you turned to her and Peter, pulling your backpack strap higher to your shoulder and said,
“Thank you for taking me out for dinner. And for walking me here. I really appreciate it.”
“Oh, no problem, dear!” May exclaims as she takes your hand and clasps it between hers, “I’m just so happy I finally got to meet you!” You give her a shy smile, still taken aback by her kindness but appreciative of it. You turn to Peter, who met your eyes as he was fiddling with his hands uncomfortably.
“Um…thanks for today,” you say to him, “I guess I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“U-uh, yeah,” he nods, “Get home safely.” You nod in response, and luckily just in time your bus pulls into the stop, freeing you from this delicate air.
“Please text Peter when you are home, okay dear?” May asks you as you make your way to the bus.
“I will, ma’am!” you assure her, and then hop onto the vehicle, making yourself comfortable as you head for home. As May and Peter watch your bus drive off, she comments,
“(Y/N) is just how you described them to me. Definitely a shy clam, but they seem like a good kid.”
“Yeah.” Peter responds, his eyes still watching the bus disappear into traffic.
“Are you ever going to tell them?” she asks, looking down at her nephew
“I don’t know,” he admits, frowning, “Honestly, I’m afraid of what will happen when they find out.”
