Okay I've been looking forward to reading the next part since I finished the second one weeks ago and HOLY SHIT???? How does this series just keep getting better and better??
I love that we can finally see the relationship between Bucky and the reader progress in this!! The characterizations you've come up with for both the reader and Bucky are fantastic, and I love that you took the time to build their bond and chemistry by staying true to who they are as people, instead of rushing everything for the sake of the plot. I loved, loved, loved everything about this!!! I don't think I can’t stress it enough 😭 and that ENDING?????? Oh my Gosshhh I'm bristling with anticipation for the next parts alreadyyyy ❤️
On another note, I just wanted to say as someone who also writes and enjoys the use of immaculate literary devices, this line right here:
It was bad enough that Natasha was on your tail—worse than that—she’d found the bones in your closet, polished them clean, and lined them up like trophies.
was perfection. I know it's not a dramatic moment or anything, and the line doesn't really hold the biggest significance in the story, but as I was reading that, I immediately thought, "That’s some good shit." So I just wanted you to know 🥺💕
Thank youuu so much for writing this masterpiece 💖

"Go for the left."
Kate blinked. "The left?"
"Yes."
She looked from you to Bucky, eyebrows raised like you’d asked her to charge a bear with a toothpick. "We’re talking about the left? The metal freaking arm left?"
"That’s the one."
The look she gave you was flat-out incredulous. "Are you serious? Isn’t that the last place I should be aiming?"
You resisted the urge to sigh. "That’s exactly why you should aim there. Everyone goes for his right. They assume it’s weaker. Bucky knows that. He’s trained to defend that side, conditioned even. But the left? Sure, it’s strong. That doesn’t make it invulnerable. Watch him."
You nodded toward Bucky, shadowboxing in the centre of the mat, relaxed but precise, like a predator keeping his muscles warm. "See how he braces before a punch? That slight weight shift? It’s a habit. Subtle but predictable. It leaves a small window, but just enough. Learn to spot that, and you can drop someone twice your size."
Kate’s expression turned thoughtful, eyes narrowing as she studied Bucky more intently. "Okay… so how do you get good at spotting weaknesses like that?"
"Learn to observe. Don’t rush in swinging. Patience and preparation will win a fight long before your fists do."
Kate nodded slowly, rolling her shoulders. "Alright. Let’s see if I can prove you right."
She took a step forward, then hesitated, glancing back at you with a sheepish grin. "I am a little scared, though—"
You gave her a flat look. "Just go, Kate."
She groaned but turned back toward Bucky, stepping onto the mat with a reluctant sort of determination.
It was late afternoon, and golden light poured through the gym windows in long, drowsy streaks. Dust drifted lazily in the sunbeams, but the air was thick with tension—not the kind that came from training, but from something far more complicated. Natasha and Yelena had thought it hilarious to pair you not only with Kate for sparring but also with Bucky. You had no doubt they were watching from the sidelines, smirking into their water bottles. Those two were always scheming.
Natasha hadn’t said anything to you yet, but then again, you’d been avoiding her like the plague since yesterday’s meeting. She was too sharp, too perceptive not to pick up on the subtle shifts in both your and Bucky’s behaviour. The cracks were already showing, the slightly too-long looks between you and Bucky, the stiffness in your tone whenever his name came up, the defensiveness you thought you’d kept hidden but apparently hadn’t.
You knew you couldn’t dodge her forever. Sooner or later, she’d confront you. And when she did, you’d have to lie—or worse, tell some version of the truth. What that truth even was… you weren’t sure. Not yet.
And Bucky?
You had no idea how to tell him you thought she already knew. That kind of conversation was a minefield, one wrong word and you’d either send him into horrified silence or make him regret every second of the nights spent together. Neither option was appealing.
You exhaled sharply, arms crossed as you watched Kate bounce on the balls of her feet, testing the space between her and Bucky.
He stood still in the centre of the mat, arms relaxed at his sides, expression unreadable. Brooding and unimpressed, as always. He hadn’t looked at you once all day, not properly at least. And yet you couldn’t stop thinking about how you knew exactly what he looked like when he came undone beneath you, fingers tangled in sheets and voice gone rough with need. He had been about as excited as you felt when the ‘teams’ for sparring were announced. You were beginning to suspect some convoluted plot half the compound was in on to see you and Bucky go head to head.
Now, he was back to being the Winter Soldier, being precisely what H.Y.D.R.A trained him to be, stoic, intimidating, unreadable. He had a talent for making his opponents feel beneath him. Unworthy. It was a tactic, you knew that, but it still worked.
Kate circled warily, eyes darting as she tried to read him, every shift in her posture betraying nerves. You watched her movements closely, noting the hesitation, the constant foot adjustments. She was looking for the right moment. You just hoped she’d recognise it when it came.
Much to Yelena and Natasha’s annoyance, you had flipped their little prank back onto them, sending Kate out to spar first, hoping to break her out of that ‘swing first, think later’ style Yelena loved so much.
A shadow moved in the corner of your vision as Yelena strolled up beside you, arms crossed, her gaze flicking between you and the fight. Speak of the devil, and she will appear.
"You’re staring real hard," she drawled. "What, got money riding on this?"
You didn’t bother looking at her. "She’s your pet project. Remind me again why I’m the one training her?"
"Apprentice," Yelena corrected smoothly.
You blinked. "What?"
She gestured vaguely toward Kate, who was still circling Bucky with the kind of careful precision that told you she was second-guessing herself. "She’s my apprentice, not a pet project. There is a difference."
"Uh-huh," you said flatly, entirely unconvinced. "And yet I’m the one teaching her how to think, instead of just swinging wildly and hoping the universe sorts it out."
Yelena smirked. "Because I am all wham, whack, bang, bam, action! Yes? You are all boring lectures and tactical talk. It is balance. How is she supposed to know how cool and awesome I am without hearing all your boring lectures about battle analysis—"
You turned to her, unimpressed. "Did you just make up sound effects?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about," she said sweetly, then sipped from a water bottle like she hadn’t just made cartoon sound effects with complete sincerity.
Your focus shifted back to the fight as Kate feinted right, then hesitated—again. Bucky wasn’t attacking yet, just watching her with the kind of stillness that would’ve put even you on edge. He was waiting for her to make the first move, to reveal her plan before he committed to a real counter.
"She’s hesitating too much," Yelena observed.
"She’s calculating," you corrected. "That’s what she’s supposed to do."
Yelena made a sceptical noise. "If she waits any longer, he’s just going to knock her flat."
"If she rushes in without a plan, it’ll be the same result."
Bucky shifted—just a subtle test, quick and clean. Kate dodged, but barely. Her stance faltered. Yelena sighed, dragging her hands down her face. "Okay, this is painful to watch. You should just let me handle her—"
“No. I’m trying to teach her to think, not charge in like a wrecking ball.”
"Excuse you," Yelena gasped, touching her chest in mock offence. "I am a very tactical wrecking ball."
You didn’t respond, eyes narrowing. Kate was watching Bucky now—really watching. Good. She sidestepped his next move, then launched into the attack.
A feint to the right. A quick pivot. Just like you’d told her.
Bucky braced for the strike to his right, but it didn’t come.
Kate dipped low, powered off her back foot, and drove her elbow toward his ribs. Clean, sharp, decisive.
Bucky twisted fast, but not fast enough.
Her elbow landed. His breath left in a tight, surprised grunt.
"See?" you muttered, nudging Yelena with an elbow. "She’s learning."
Yelena lifted a brow. "Yeah, yeah. We’ll see if she follows through."
Instead of retreating, Kate followed through, using the momentum to drive her knee upward.
Bucky jerked back, but not far enough. Kate’s knee clipped his chin, snapping his head up just enough for the final blow.
You scoffed. "Give her some credit—"
A sharp smack rang through the gym.
Bucky let out a startled grunt of pain, staggering back, one hand cupping his face. Blood was already leaking between his fingers.
Kate froze, eyes going wide in horror. "Oh my god—Bucky! Oh my god, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean—are you okay? Oh god, you’re bleeding—"
Bucky tipped his head back, exhaling sharply through his nose, which only made more blood drip down his lip. “No kidding.”
Yelena snorted beside you. "Okay, I take it back. She might actually be good at this."
Kate was still floundering, hands hovering like she wanted to help but had no idea how. "What do you need—should I get a medic? Ice? Tissues? A priest?"
Bucky shot her a glare, nostrils flaring as more blood dripped down his lip. "Just… just give me a second."
You stepped forward onto the mat. "Well. I’d say she followed through."
Yelena smirked. "Yeah. Maybe a little too well."
Kate turned to you, looking utterly betrayed. "You told me to go for the left!"
"I said to attack the opening on his left, not ‘punch him in the face like you’re trying to knock out a tooth’, but hey, improvisation is an important skill."
Kate groaned. Bucky muttered something low and vile in Russian as he turned toward the exit, blood trailing faintly in his wake.
Even Yelena blinked. “That sounded like a curse, Kate. Possibly an ancient one.”
“Don’t say that!” Kate whined in fear.
"I’ll handle him," you muttered with a sigh, already following. You paused at the edge of the mat, glancing back at Kate. “You did good. Maybe pull your punches and ease off the full-force murder next time?”
Kate groaned louder. "That was me pulling my punches!"
Yelena’s laughter followed you as you crossed the room, clapping her hands together as she bounced on her toes like an excited child. "Oh, this is fun. We should do this more often."
You pushed through the changing room door and stepped into the cooler air beyond. The space was clean and sterile in that way that only rich tech-billionaire funding could buy. Polished tiles, dark wood lockers with brass fittings, and the faint scent of citrusy cleaner lingering beneath the hum of recessed lights.
The sound of running water guided you to the sinks.
Bucky was hunched over the white porcelain basin, one arm braced on the counter, the other still cupping the lower half of his face. The mirror above caught his reflection, blood-streaked, jaw-tight, brows drawn down in a frustrated knot. Crimson spiralled down the drain, bright against the ceramic.
“You look like a crime scene, you muttered as you crossed the room.
Bucky let out a sharp breath through his mouth, meeting your comment with a pointed grunt that spoke volumes.
You raised a brow. “Are you going to keep glaring at me like I put out a hit on you?”
“You did,” he muttered flatly.
You rolled your eyes, making a beeline for the paper towel dispenser. You pulled out a few thick, folded sheets and pressed them into his free hand. “Sit down.”
“I’m fine.” he grumbled.
“Bucky.” You shot him a look, unimpressed. “Sit.”
His jaw tightened like he wanted to argue, but after a moment, he relented, pushing off the counter, and he trudged toward one of the benches in the centre of the room and sat down stiffly, wincing as he tilted his head back.
You crouched in front of him, studying his face. The blood smeared across his upper lip stood out starkly against his skin, but at least it wasn’t gushing anymore. His nose was red, swelling a little but not crooked. Reaching out, you ghosted your fingers over the bridge, careful and light. “I don’t think it’s broken.”
Bucky huffed. “Feels broken.”
“Yeah, well, maybe don’t let Kate punch you in the face next time.”
His lips twitched, but he didn’t dignify you with a response.
Shaking your head, you folded a fresh set of paper towels and pressed them lightly against his nose. “Hold this. It'll keep you from dripping all over Stark’s precious floors.”
Bucky took them with a sigh, his metal fingers brushing yours briefly.
You sank to your knees without really thinking about it, watching as Bucky pinched the bridge of his nose, adjusting the pressure with careful precision. His shoulders had lost some of their earlier tension, but his posture was still guarded like he was bracing himself for something more than just the dull throb of pain. The quiet hum of the ventilation system filled the space, blending with the distant murmur of voices from the gym beyond.
“Last night, I—” Bucky broke the silence first, his voice slightly nasal from the swelling.
“You fell asleep.” You cut him off gently, offering a faint smile. You didn’t know how much he had actually heard before exhaustion had finally claimed him. Maybe that was for the best. Perhaps it had been a mistake to let your guard down, to speak so openly, to bare your soul so easily. You had told yourself you wouldn’t burden him with your struggles. He already carried enough of his own.
And yet, he had this way of making you feel safe. Too safe.
It was almost ironic. He was supposed to instil fear, his name alone enough to make enemies think twice. And yet, all you saw was a rather sad, damaged, and tired man, his big, mournful puppy-dog eyes carrying the weight of things he could never put into words.
“Yeah. I don’t… remember it happening,” Bucky admitted, frowning slightly as if frustrated with himself. “One second, I was with you, and the next—”
“Did you sleep well, at least?”
He hesitated like he was debating whether to downplay it. But then, finally, he nodded. “Yeah. Best I have in a while.”
Your smile grew just a little. “I’m glad.”
Silence settled again, not awkward, but not entirely comfortable either. Then, after a beat, Bucky sighed.
“I’m sorry that I don’t talk to you much outside of… lessons.”
You shook your head. “It’s fine, Bucky. You don’t… owe me anything.”
“It’s just… I don’t know how to act,” he admitted, gaze flicking away. “Not with everyone watching. I don’t want them figuring out. I don’t like their attention being all over me.”
Your smile faltered for just a second before you forced it back into place.
“How’s your shoulder?” you asked, shifting the conversation.
Bucky’s brows pulled together in confusion. “How do you know about that—?”
You shrugged. It was your job to observe. To pick people apart and learn their secrets before they even knew them themselves. “During training, I’ve noticed you favour your right side. You block and punch heavier with it. You were compensating subconsciously because your left side was giving you grief. Have you thought about seeing a physio?”
His lips parted slightly like he hadn’t expected you to catch that. Then his gaze narrowed, a hint of suspicion creeping in.
“Is that why you gave me a massage yesterday?”
You smirked, tilting your head playfully. “Hm. Maybe.”
Bucky huffed a quiet laugh, shaking his head. “Always two steps ahead, huh?”
You leaned in just a little, eyes glinting with amusement, a witty remark hanging off your tongue—only to dissolve the moment the door swung open.
Steve sauntered in, halting mid-step by the sinks as he took in the scene. You were kneeling between Bucky’s legs, a faint smirk tugging at your mouth while he looked down at you with something dangerously close to a smile—bloody paper towel and all.
Steve’s brows lifted. Confusion crossed his face, mixed with something harder to place, surprise? Suspicion? Whatever it was, he clearly wasn’t expecting this.
You jerked back instinctively, hands bracing on your thighs as you turned to face him.
“It’s not broken,” you announced a little too quickly, jerking your chin toward Bucky. “He’ll live. Bit of swelling and a bit of bruising. Nothing that won’t fade.”
Steve blinked, still trying to piece things together. “I didn’t realise you two were… friends?”
You let out a short, sharp laugh, already on your feet and several paces away. “Hear that, Barnes? We’re friends now.”
Bucky—who stiffly sat on the bench, with his hands still braced against his knees—remained utterly rooted in place as if one wrong move would shatter the illusion. His eyes flicked to you, then to Steve, then back to you, a silent plea not to say anything more.
Steve, on the other hand, still looked perplexed.
“What?” you asked, turning back to the sink and rinsing your hands of the small amount of blood that had smudged across the skin during your brief inspection.
He hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. “Nothing, I just, uh…” His face twisted slightly like he regretted speaking at all. “I’ve never heard you laugh before. It surprised me, that’s all.”
That stopped you. Cold. The smirk slipped from your face like it had never been there. Classic Steve Rogers. World’s most well-meaning bastard. Saying the worst possible thing with the purest damn intentions.
You hadn’t exactly made yourself the most approachable presence on the team. You kept your distance, never bought into the ‘team bonding’ crap that Stark and Fury constantly tried to shove down your throat. You weren’t here for friendships but to do a job. But something about how he said it—I’ve never heard you laugh before—grated deep. Like your silence was an affliction. Like you were broken because you didn’t play nice like everyone else.
Without thinking, you flicked water in his direction.
He flinched back with a slight grimace.
“Thanks, Rogers,” you said, bone-dry. Then you turned, walking away without another word.
You could faintly hear Steve’s voice, panicked and confused, coming from behind you as you pushed the door open.
“What? What did I do?” he called to Bucky, his voice trailing.
“That was painful,” Bucky muttered loud enough for you to catch. “You always tell women to smile more, or is that just your opener? Remind me how you bagged Sharon talking like that—”
“That wasn’t what I was saying—!” Steve protested, his words quickly swallowed by the sound of the door snapping shut behind you
But it didn’t matter.
Because the truth was, you probably would laugh more if life hadn’t spent the past few years making sure you forgot how. If it weren’t for how every genuine emotion now felt like an act, something you wielded like a weapon to get what you wanted. The only time you really smiled or laughed anymore was on missions, tools of the trade. Smile here, flirt there, manipulate, mislead, vanish. You could fake it all like second nature, charm so convincing it fooled even yourself sometimes.
Because when it was real, it still felt like a lie.
You stalked back into the gym, trying to push the thoughts aside. Yelena’s sharp eyes caught yours almost immediately. “We’re going to the bar after this. You coming?”
You reached for your gym bag, slinging it over your shoulder without missing a beat. “No,” you answered flatly, prowling to walk toward the door.
“You’re not coming?” Kate had appeared from nowhere at your side, big blue eyes staring up at you.
You glanced down at her, deadpan. “Can you even go? Aren’t you like twelve?”
Kate’s begging expression melted into a playful glare, hands on her hips as you hesitated by the door. “No! I’m in college. I’m not a kid!”
You raised an eyebrow, her defensive tone amusing you. “How old are you?”
“Twenty-two,” she shot back, almost proudly.
You grinned, leaning against the doorframe. “Ah, barely legal.”
“It’s fine, she’ll be with us!” Yelena chimed in, giving you a pleading look. “Nat is coming, the others too, maybe Kate can buy Bucky a drink as an apology for breaking his nose—”
“Hey! I didn’t break it!” Kate protested, then looked up at you with a fearful expression, voice dipping in volume. “I didn’t, did I?”
You rolled your eyes, leaning in dramatically as if giving a speech. “I can already see the headline: ‘Avengers Drunken Antics on Public Display’—.’”
Yelena scowled at you. “It’s fine!”
You smirked, but the exhaustion from the past few hours still weighed heavily on you. “You’re probably right. I can’t say much, in Russia we had vodka with breakfast.”
“So you’re coming?” Yelena asked one last time, sounding hopeful despite your resistance.
“No.” You said it with finality.  “I’ve seen too much of your face today. I need a break.”
Yelena raised an eyebrow, but Kate was already heading towards her bag with a skip in her step. “Fine! More for us then!”
The training room was unusually quiet without Yelena’s smartass remarks ricocheting off the walls. Usually, the three of you trained together in the early mornings, but she and Kate were off on some covert infiltration upstate. Childs play for Yelena, really, though she’d taken her duties as a mentor for her little pet project rather seriously. That left just you and Natasha circling each other on the mat. You weren’t exactly thrilled about Yelena’s absence, which meant you were facing the full brunt of Natasha’s wrath alone. What didn’t help was that you hadn’t slept properly in days. You were running on fumes, and it showed. The last week had felt like one long string of wipeouts, each one dragging you down further with no sign of relief.
You ducked beneath a lazy strike, half-hearted at best, and swept your leg toward Natasha’s ribs. She blocked it with her shin like she’d barely noticed.
“Sloppy,” she remarked.
You threw a punch, weak and lazy. Natasha easily caught your wrist, spinning your body and throwing you to the mat. The impact knocked the air out of your lungs. She didn’t even break a sweat. She let out a short laugh, her hair spilling into her face as she looked down at you, amused.
But something was off.
Not in how she fought—no, that was as sharp as ever—but in her expression. Tight-lipped. Smug. And not her usual brand of smug, either. This was different, like she was sitting on a secret and absolutely itching for you to notice. She had that look again. The same one she’d had for the last two weeks. A silent challenge. An arrogant knowing. A game of cat and mouse neither of you had been willing to finish.
You groaned, deciding to cut your losses and pushed yourself off the mat, wiping sweat from your brow.
“There’s obviously something you want to say to me,” you muttered.
Natasha didn’t even pause. She moved in for another strike before you could fully recover, but you caught her forearm and twisted. She resisted effortlessly, that infuriating calm grin spreading across her face again.
“Nope,” she said. “Just… pleased, that’s all.”
“Pleased about what?” you asked cautiously.
Natasha pivoted out of your grip like water slipping through your fingers and swept your legs out from under you with a sharp hook of her foot. You hit the ground again with a dull thud. She didn’t bother offering you a hand up as if half-convinced you’d stay down.
“That I figured out your little secret before everyone else.” Her grin turned vicious. She started to circle you again, tone sing-song and entirely too satisfied. “Took me a while, but once I saw it, I couldn’t unsee it.”
You rolled up to your feet, levelling her with a look. “What secret?”
You played it cool. Innocent. But you both knew the gig was up. Natasha was like you, trained to spot what others missed, to read the body language no one else even registered. She’d probably clocked you and Bucky the moment you returned from the Gala. She and Yelena hadn’t exactly been subtle about their hunches, either.
She raised a brow. “Oh, come on. You’re really going to make me say it?”
You blinked back at her, expression blank.
“You,” she said, dragging the word out. “And Barnes.”
You deflected with a snort. “Yelena’s theories getting to you?”
“Don’t lie.” Natasha rolled her eyes. “He’s always making those puppy-dog eyes at you when he thinks no one’s looking.”
You barked a laugh, catching her off guard just long enough for you to swing a low kick her way. She dodged it neatly.
“Puppy-dog eyes? I can’t imagine it.” You lied through your teeth. “He always looks like someone kicked him while he was down. That or the brooding.”
Natasha’s smirk sharpened. “And you’re into that? He must be a very good fuck if you’re sticking around this long.”
“We haven’t…” You hesitated with a curse, missing a beat in your footwork. You shook your head, willing your mind to be able to focus on two tasks at once through the haze of fatigue. “Why would I want to fuck Barnes—”
“Considering our line of work, you’re a terrible liar sometimes.” You scowled at the amusement dripping from her voice.
“It’s not like that between us.” You relented. “Not that it’s any of your business anyway—”
She cut over you, tilting her head. “You’re telling me you two haven’t had sex? God, don’t tell me it’s romance—”
“I’m just helping him feel normal.” You snapped back, hoping to shut her down before it got worse. “H.Y.D.R.A fucked him up, that’s for sure. The same way the Red Room fucked us up.”
Natasha made a face like something had clicked into place in her mind. “Shit.”
Your stomach dropped, movements stuttering as you realised you had unintentionally opened the floodgates.
“Right,” she murmured, and something about her tone shifted. Not her usual brand of teasing. “You’re not… Never mind.”
You lunged toward her on instinct, catching her wrist with a clumsy grip. The contact was unsteady, your fingers didn’t have the strength they usually did, and Natasha didn’t fight back immediately.
“What?” you asked, eyes narrowing.
“Don’t worry about it,” she replied too quickly, too carefully.
“You’ve said it now,” you pressed, breath short. “Go on.”
She hesitated, her jaw ticking as her gaze drifted down, avoiding yours. The tension in her body softened by degrees, like she’d been carrying the thought for too long and finally decided it wasn’t worth holding onto.
“I just…” she exhaled, slow and controlled, “I worry about you sometimes. I hope you’re not taking on too much.”
You blinked at her, the fog in your head thick and sluggish. “Why do you say that?”
“You know what I mean.”
You knew what she meant, even if it was a truth you’d been hiding from yourself. A truth you didn’t want to look at too closely out of fear of it consuming you whole. A dull ache formed your chest, a lump in your throat as you shook your head.
You knew Natasha wouldn’t have had any way of knowing those forbidden words you’d uttered to Bucky, the ones he had missed as sleep had pulled him under, the thoughts that haunted you now that you had finally shown them acknowledgement. You felt sick. Rotten to your core. Like maggots and rot festered within, wriggling and twitching beneath the skin, just enough for you to pretend, smile, and continue like normal as your world shattered around you.
“I’m not some broken little girl, Nat,” you said, heat rising behind your words. “I can look after myself.”
“I’m sure of that,” she said softly, and it was the softness that rattled you most. Natasha didn’t do soft unless it mattered. “But… can you look after yourself? Or have you just isolated yourself for so long that you’ve tricked yourself into thinking the only person you can trust is yourself?”
Her voice, the quiet honesty of it, landed harder than any blow she’d dealt all morning.
You looked down, your fists trembling faintly. You flexed your fingers, opening and closing them like the answer might be written in your palms.
“I’m fine.”
She didn’t argue, but she didn’t believe you either. You could feel it in the silence between her breaths. Natasha never spoke unless she meant it. She was always calculating like you.
“I just…” she said, the words tentative like they were being picked up and examined before they left her mouth. “I don’t want to see you hurt.”
She paused, then added with a wry twist of her lips as if to soften the blow, “Or Barnes.”
You snorted, the sound bitter and short. “Since when do you care about Barnes?”
“I don’t,” she said. “Not really. But if he gets attached and this doesn’t go how he hopes, he could spiral. And if you get attached and he panics…”
“I know.”
And you did. You knew it too well. The thought had curled up behind your ribs and sat there, heavy and unwanted, gnawing at you whenever he looked at you like you were something soft. Like you were safe. You didn’t feel like a safe option.
“Just…” Natasha’s voice was quieter now, more cautious. “Don’t lose yourself trying to fix him.”
You met her eyes, forcing yourself to stay grounded. To not waver. “I’m not damaged.”
Her expression didn’t shift, but you saw how her brow pinched, the subtle twitch at the corner of her mouth.
“You know what I mean,” she said.
You sighed, the weight of your exhaustion peeling every word from your throat like it didn’t want to come willingly. “I’m also not trying to fix him. We’re just… friends. With benefits. Nothing more.”
She gave a slow nod like she was willing to accept that on paper, but in her gut, she wasn’t buying it.
“Okay,” she said finally. “I’ll believe you. Just… don’t go all radio silent on me like you do. I’m here for you, you know?”
You raised a brow, trying for humour but lacking the energy to pull it off entirely. “You getting all sappy on me now?”
“Never.”
“Sure sounds like it.”
“Hm. Maybe.” She swiped the back of her hand across her brow. “But don’t tell Yelena. She’ll rip me to fucking shreds over it.”
Despite yourself, you let out a faint, tired laugh.
But it only lasted a second before Natasha lunged again.
You weren’t fast enough this time—your sluggish body didn’t catch up to the signal your brain sent. Her leg swept yours, and the mat slammed into your shoulder before you even realised you were falling. Pain flared, dull and heavy, and you lay there. Breathing hard. Staring up at the ceiling like it might offer you some kind of answer.
Natasha hovered above you, arms crossed loosely, her expression unreadable.
“Seriously,” she said. “When was the last time you actually slept? You look like shit.”
There it was, the usual cool, snide remark to cushion the fact that she truly cared. Like she knew you’d run like a spooked animal if she showed too much kindness. You didn’t answer right away. Just closed your eyes and let the silence stretch.
Natasha let out a grunt, not the least bit impressed.
You would have to warn Bucky that if he kept looking at you like that, the two of you were bound to end up in a whole world of trouble.
It was bad enough that Natasha was on your tail—worse than that—she’d found the bones in your closet, polished them clean, and lined them up like trophies. You knew she wouldn’t breathe a word to Yelena, or anyone else for that matter, but you could feel a future creeping toward you, one where her tongue slipped. Just once. That’s all it would take.
And Bucky? He wasn’t helping. Not with that look. Not when even Steve Rogers did a double take, brows ticking up as if to say really, Buck?
You were fresh off a particularly gruelling recon mission at Karpin’s club. No fists were thrown, no bullets dodged, but that didn’t make it any less exhausting. Playing the role of an attractive, naïve dancer took more skill than most people realised. You’d spent the last six weeks prying secrets from Karpin’s greasy fingers. Details about his buyers, how payments were moved, anything useful. He never suspected a thing, too high on his own ego to realise the little thing on his arm was gutting him for intel.
Fury had been unmistakable in his instructions—get the buyers first. If they caught wind that S.H.I.E.L.D was sniffing around, they’d scatter like roaches, and the whole operation would collapse. So you played the waiting game. Carefully. Precisely. Night after night.
Now you just wanted a drink. And a scalding-hot shower. Maybe both at once. Your skin felt like it had absorbed the club, cheap vodka, cigarette smoke, and desperation.
You adjusted the fur coat around your shoulders with a groan, trying to ignore how your dress—if you could even call it that—kept shifting against your skin. Yelena had dubbed the coat your ‘mob wife piece’ after finally watching The Sopranos, and the name had stuck. Your heels were the real punishment, though. Tall, unforgiving, and cursed by whatever sadist designed them.
After every recon job, the standard protocol was to turn in evidence immediately—cameras, bugs, audio mics, and a hand-written report. After six hours of playing pretend, you were scribbling in agonising detail while the evidence collection agent across from you gave you a rather pointed, unamused look. You briefly considered banging your head against the desk.
And, of course, Bucky was watching you. Not subtly. No, he was seated in a glass-walled meeting room across the way, surrounded by agents and Avengers, but his eyes hadn’t left you in a while. He looked like a gambler who’d just hit the jackpot. You watched him watching you, and you forgot to be annoyed for a second. He looked... ravenous. Unapologetically so.
The meeting finally broke. Doors opened. Agents spilled out. That was your cue. Evidence was handed in, and your aching wrist is getting no thanks for its service. The agent slid your report into a folder stamped ‘CLASSIFIED’ in angry red ink. You almost laughed. God, the theatre of it all.
Natasha bumped your shoulder as she sauntered past towards the elevator.
“Better keep loverboy in check,” she muttered in your ear as she passed. Her smirk was wicked.
You shot her a scowl.
Bucky was in the crowd, still watching. His gaze wasn’t on your scowl, though. It was lower. Tracing the cling of the gold mesh slip dress, the way it shimmered under the harsh overhead lights. Tacky enough for the job. Tight enough to draw attention. It hugged every curve with intent, and though it wasn’t your usual style, you were beginning to wonder if it might become one.
You hadn’t pegged Bucky for the type who’d go wild for glitter and skin, but judging by the look in his eyes…
Thank god for lessons, or he'd be dealing with a very awkward elevator ride.
“I think I’ll take the stairs,” you replied, more bitterly than you meant to.
Natasha smirked as the elevator doors began to close, her eyes dancing with amusement and just a hint of sympathy. But it was Bucky’s gaze that lingered until the very last second as if he could memorise the sight of you before the doors cut him off.
You turned sharply on your heel and made for the stairs, the ache in your feet be damned. The heels bit with every step, but you welcomed the sting. It was easier to focus on than the heat lingering after Bucky’s gaze.
Four flights up, your phone dinged.
You didn’t have to check it to know. You already had a feeling. Still, a smirk pulled at your lips as you glanced at the lock screen.
Can I see you tonight?
Bucky had taken to modern tech far better than Steve ever had. Where Steve still asked what a GIF was or accidentally created a new group chat every time he tried to reply, Bucky had easily slipped into the rhythm.
You thumbed out a reply as you rounded the next flight of stairs.
Aren’t you going out for drinks with the others?
Fridays had become a ritual for the team, provided no one was off saving the world or buried in a mission, so there’d be a few rounds at a bar nearby. Laughter. Cheap beer. Temporary normalcy.
You watched the typing bubble flicker to life… then vanish. Then again. And again.
Not my scene.
A pause.
Is that a no?
You grinned, slowing your steps just a little. You could picture him sitting on the edge of his bed, hovering over the screen like the answer might change everything.
You typed quickly.
I’ll come to your room right now if you ask nicely.
You paused in the stairway, hesitating outside the door for the residential floor where all the apartments were located. Your pulse tapped a little faster beneath your skin.
Another ding.
Please?
That was all it took.
You pushed open the door.
On my way.
“I want to try something different,” you murmured against Bucky’s skin, your lips brushing the hollow of his throat as you nuzzled into the warmth of his neck.
It all happened in a blur when you stepped through his door. Heels abandoned at the threshold, your coat sliding from your shoulders like a shrug of tension gone loose. Bucky had lasted all of two seconds, long enough for a strained smile and a greeting muttered through clenched teeth before instinct took over. His hands found your waist. Your back. Your thighs. And then you were in his lap as he stumbled backwards onto the bed, the mattress giving under both your weight and the familiar gravity that always pulled you toward each other.
Mumbled apologies about the scent of alcohol and sweat were lost beneath kisses, the air thick with the smell of him—black coffee from his meeting and that damn aftershave—as you melted into your usual spot atop him.
His rough palm ghosted up the back of your thigh in lazy strokes, the pads of his fingers brushing skin like he already knew it by heart. You blinked up at him, studying the angles of his face, searching for that tell-tale flicker, tightening of his jaw, a furrow between his brows, anything that indicated hesitation or worry. But there was none. Instead, he caught your eye, the touch of vibranium fingers cool and featherlight against your cheek.
“Last time you said that,” he murmured with a low chuckle, “you blindfolded me.”
“And it worked, didn’t it?” You cut back rather smugly, only to be met with a reluctant hum of agreement. “I want to talk about something first.”
Bucky stilled, alert now in that quiet, observant way of his. “What’s that?”
Your fingers toyed with the fabric of his shirt. “Are you afraid of me touching you?”
He blinked, surprised. “No? Is this a trick question—?”
“Do you like me touching you?”
“Yes.” His answer came easily, without hesitation.
“But you don’t like me touching your cock.”
That gave him pause. The stroking of your thigh faltered. There it was, his jaw ticked, the smallest tension rising between his brows like a storm cloud forming just behind his eyes.
“I don’t…Isn’t that what we’ve been doing these past few months?” His voice was low, cautious.
“You let me touch you near it,” you said gently. “But if I move my hand under your waistband, even just a little, you freeze. You ask me to stop. I just want to know why.”
His throat bobbed with a hard swallow. He stared at the ceiling instead of at you, like maybe the answer was written there if he looked hard enough.
“There’s no wrong answer,” you whispered. “I’m not upset. I’m not trying to push you. I just want to understand. To help.”
He exhaled slowly, brows knitting in thought.
“It’s overwhelming, I think,” he said finally. “The added…feeling. On top of everything else that’s already happening.”
“So,” you said slowly, “if it happened in isolation. Nothing else, just that, you’d feel more comfortable? More in control?”
He nodded once. “Yeah. I think so.”
You hesitated, then asked softly, “Would you be okay with trying today? Right now?”
His eyes finally met yours, a flash of vulnerability behind the steel blue. “Putting me on the spot here, doll…”
Doll. That was a pet name you wouldn’t look too deeply into. Or acknowledge. He didn’t even seem to notice he had said it.
“You can always say no,” you reminded him softly. “That’s the most important rule, always. Either of us can stop at any time. No questions, no pressure, no hard feelings.”
He was quiet momentarily, gaze flickering between your eyes, searching for something. Then he nodded once, steady.
“Let’s do it.”
You paused, holding his gaze. “Are you sure?”
A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, a touch wry. “I trusted you when you blindfolded me, didn’t I?” he said, voice low, rough around the edges. “I don’t see any reason not to trust you now.”
That was all the encouragement you needed.
You slipped off his lap with ease, sinking onto the floor between his knees, the hem of your dress bunching up around your thighs. You blinked up at him expectantly, steady but unhurried. Bucky hesitated, shoulders tensing as his hands hovered uncertainly at his belt. A flicker of embarrassment was behind his eyes, the kind he hadn’t yet learned to hide from you.
You didn’t comment on it. Didn’t tease him for the blush creeping up his neck, or for the way his fingers fumbled slightly as he undid the buckle and began peeling off the layers. You just waited—quiet, patient, allowing him to find his own pace. You didn’t point out the irony of it all, how easily he’d unravel for you, but how nudity still brought hesitation. Like showing skin was somehow more vulnerable than offering up his soul.
His boxers were the last to go, and by the time he slid them down, he was already half-hard, his cock flushed with arousal. The pink tint on his cheeks deepened as his eyes darted away from yours.
You tilted your head, shifting closer until you were kneeling between his legs. The warmth radiating from his thighs drew you in like a hearth. Your hand brushed lightly over his knee in reassurance, and he twitched at the contact.
“You okay?” you asked softly, your voice more hum than a question.
He nodded, but it was too tight, too instinctive.
You paused.
“Need to hear your words, Bucky. I’m only going to do this if you tell me you’re okay.”
There was a beat of silence, his vibranium hand clenching in the sheets beside him.
“I want this,” he said, voice low but certain, even if his body still trembled faintly beneath you.
You held his gaze for a moment longer, reading the tension in his shoulders, the way his chest rose and fell with shallow breath.
“You remember what to say if you need to stop?”
He nodded again, more grounded this time. “Yeah. I remember.”
Satisfied, you reached out, your fingers wrapping gently around the base of his cock. You were cautious at first, letting your touch linger without pressure, just the soft drag of skin against skin. A strained groan left him almost immediately, the muscles in his thighs tightening on either side of you.
You glanced up at him through your lashes, watching his face twist with the sensation. His jaw slackened, mouth parted, eyes nearly fluttering closed as you began to stroke him. Slow, deliberate, careful. He was thick and heavy in your hand, already pulsing with anticipation, growing harder by the second. You shouldn’t have been surprised. Not after the nights spent grinding into each other, his arousal pressed tight and insistent through layers of clothing, but still, the reality of him was enough to stir a wicked spark behind your smile.
You pumped him a few more times, watching how easily his composure began to slip. He was already squirming, breaths ragged, his abdomen twitching every time your palm slid down to the base and back up again.
His head fell back, a quiet whimper escaping him as you thumbed over the slit at the head of his cock. He flinched from the contact, one hand flying to your elbow and gripping it like an anchor, his whole body responding to the jolt of pleasure like he’d been struck by lightning.
“How do you feel?” you asked, voice low, almost teasing.
It took him a moment to answer. His lips parted, trying to form words while his chest heaved, his eyes glazed over with ecstasy. A drop of pre-cum beaded at the tip, and you collected it with your fingers, spreading it down the shaft to ease your rhythm.
“Good,” he finally gasped. “Amazing. Did it always… I don’t remember it feeling—”
His words dissolved into a sharp gasp as you leaned forward and kissed the tip. The contact was featherlight, but it shattered him. His metal hand shot up into your hair, not to pull or direct, but to ground himself, trembling as if the sensation threatened to lift him right out of his skin.
“Oh my god—” He began to whine.
You giggled softly, the warmth of your breath enough to send him over the edge.
Bucky came with a choked moan, his hips jerking as thick, hot ropes spilt over your chin and neck. His thighs trembled with the force of it, his head thrown back as if he couldn’t bear the weight of pleasure crashing through him. You stroked him through it, gentle and slow, coaxing every last pulse from him while he tried and failed to string thoughts together.
As he collapsed back against the mattress, boneless and dazed, you ran a hand up the inside of his thigh, using it as leverage to push yourself upright. His grip on your hair slackened and fell away, his hands lying limp beside him, fingers twitching faintly in the aftershocks.
“I’m gonna clean up,” you hummed, leaning down to press a kiss to his temple. “Don’t move. I’ll be right back, okay?”
He didn’t even open his eyes, just nodded, lips parted, breath still ragged.
“Okay,” he mumbled, voice thick and warm with lingering arousal. “I’ll be right here.”
It took only a few minutes to freshen up. You moved on muscle memory, warm water, damp cloth, and a quick sweep of your hair from your neck. You paused before leaving the bathroom, grabbing a clean towel in case he wanted it.
But when you stepped back into the bedroom, you found he’d already taken care of himself, his boxers pulled back on.
Bucky was sprawled across the mattress like he’d melted into it, a sheen of sweat still clinging to his collarbone. He looked wrecked—in the best way. Hair tousled, chest rising and falling in a slow, almost dazed rhythm, but his gaze sharpened the second it landed on you. A lazy, crooked grin tugged at his lips as he lifted an arm in a silent invitation, eyes still half-lidded and blown wide with the afterglow.
You climbed into bed beside him, the weight of his body shifting as you curled into the space between his arm and chest. His skin was warm against yours, the hum of his heartbeat steady beneath your cheek. You pressed a soft kiss to the curve of his jaw, and his breath hitched as your hand slid over his stomach.
His mouth found yours not long after, lazy and unhurried like neither of you wanted to break the spell. It didn’t stay that way for long. Hunger crept in. Familiar, greedy heat as his mouth parted and his fingers tangled into your hair, tugging just enough to make your breath catch.
And then… you felt him. Again.
Your thigh brushed his hip, and you stilled. Then pulled back, brows arching in playful disbelief. “Already?”
The question hung in the air like a teasing note, half-smirk, half-curiosity.
Bucky’s eyes dipped, lashes fanning over flushed cheeks. He looked momentarily abashed as if he’d been caught red-handed, though the evidence quite literally pressed against your leg.
“It’s the super soldier serum,” he mumbled, the corner of his mouth curling despite himself.
You tilted your head, amusement rising. He was trying to play it cool, but the slight flush on his ears gave him away.
“Oh?” you drawled. “And how exactly did you come to that conclusion?”
His fingers scratched lightly at the back of his neck, a classic tell.
“Steve said something once,” he offered, deliberately vague.
You blinked. Your smile widened, slow and predatory.
“Steve?” you echoed. “You’ve been talking to Steve about this?”
“No!” His protest was immediate and rushed like a man trying to stop a landslide with a broom. “Not exactly,” he amended quickly. “He was talking about Sharon, I guess.”
A laugh bubbled up, and you bit your bottom lip to stifle it, your hand resting lightly on his chest. You could feel the way his heart kicked beneath your palm. Nervous, flustered. Bucky Barnes, caught in the act of oversharing.
“Sharon, huh?” you said innocently, voice tinged with mischief.
His eyes narrowed slightly, catching the shift in your tone. “What?”
“Oh, nothing,” you said airily, pretending to inspect the stitching on the pillowcase behind his head. “Just something Yelena said the other day.”
Suspicion flickered in his gaze, but you forged ahead.
“She thinks Steve wasn’t as innocent as we all pegged him. Something about spotting him and Sharon… in a compromising position.”
Bucky snorted, turning his face into your shoulder to muffle the sound. “I wonder what they’d make of this.”
“Oh, I’d never hear the end of it,” you groaned, flopping onto your back with theatrical flair. “They’re already circling like vultures, trying to interrogate me about the gala.”
He shifted beside you, propping himself up slightly on his elbow to get a better look at your face. “And what did you tell them?”
You hesitated. Just long enough for the silence to tighten.
There it was, the flicker of guilt behind your eyes. You could feel it rise like a slow tide in your chest, swelling into your throat. You should tell him. About Natasha’s uncanny perception, the way her gaze had cut straight through you like a knife, and how you’d cracked under pressure with barely a word from her.
But you didn’t. You weren’t sure how he’d take it. Knowing someone else was privy to this—this, your quiet little secret.
“Nothing,” you said, soft but firm, hoping your smile would mask the lie.
His expression didn’t shift dramatically, but you saw his brow furrowed slightly—a quiet sharpening behind the eye.
“Nothing?” he repeated.
“I just…” You sighed, turning to face him properly. The pillow dipped beneath your cheek. “I figured you didn’t want anyone to know. I didn’t want to make things messy.”
He was quiet. His gaze flicked to the ceiling, and when he spoke again, his voice was lower. “Yeah. It’s probably for the best, isn’t it?”
He didn’t sound entirely convinced by his own words, and you didn’t feel entirely convinced either.
“It’s up to you,” you said eventually. “Everyone’s image of me is already… well, damaged.” You let out a soft, bitter laugh, fingers twisting idly in the edge of the sheets. “I’m sure this will hardly ruin my reputation. But yours…”
“That seems unfair,” he said, brows drawing together.
“What does?”
“The way they treat you.” Your breath caught slightly, unprepared for its bluntness. You looked at him, and he met your gaze head-on. No hesitation, no irony. Just honesty, raw and unvarnished. And before you could piece together a response, he spoke again. “Do you always do that? Make yourself smaller for other people?”
The question landed like a stone in your gut. You froze, eyes searching his face, almost disbelieving.
He hadn’t said it unkindly. But it lodged deep.
For a moment, you were tempted to laugh it off, to deflect, to be clever. Anything to avoid the sudden, unexpected vulnerability that cracked open inside you like a fault line.
Had he been watching you this whole time? Not just looking, but seeing? Had you been too busy circling Bucky to notice that he circled you in return?
You smiled weakly, wanting to fill the dreadful silence that had settled over the both of you. “I could say the same for you.”
His hand slipped around your waist, pulling you flush against him again. You could feel the weight of him against your hip, the heat building between you again.
You let your nose brush his. “Still something to do with the serum?”
Bucky smirked, lips brushing yours. “That… and you.”
You exhaled a breathless laugh, but something about the way his thumbs moved, slow circles against your ribs, made the warmth curl low in your belly again. The mood was shifting. Building. You could feel it.
And then his voice turned quieter. Uncertain.
“I feel bad,” he murmured.
You blinked, drawing back just enough to see the look on his face.
“Bad?” you repeated, confused.
“For not…” He gestured vaguely between your bodies. “Returning the favour.”
You reached up, brushing your thumb along the line of his jaw. His stubble rasped against your skin.
“Bucky,” you said gently, “you don’t have to do everything all at once.”
He frowned, and you could tell he didn’t quite agree. Always so ready to shoulder weight that was never meant to be his. Always prepared to give more than he thought he was allowed to take. He carried guilt like it was just another one of his old injuries that could never quite be healed.
“I don’t want to overwhelm you,” you added, quieter now. “With information. Or… expectations.”
His eyes searched yours. “But I want to learn.”
“There’s a little more involved in getting a woman to orgasm,” you said, but your tone light as you tried to shake off the weight of his gaze.
“It doesn’t have to be… I just want to make you feel good.”
God. He said it like it mattered. Like you mattered.
Your resolve crumbled.
You rose slowly, coaxing him to sit up with you. Straddling his hips felt natural now, like returning to a familiar place. You took his hand gently, guiding it up over your shoulder over the thin gold strap of your dress.
“Okay,” you murmured. “Then help me take this off.”
His fingers moved with care, grazing over your skin, catching the strap between his thumb and forefinger as he began to ease the dress down your arms. The fabric slid away like a sigh, pooling around your waist, revealing the strapless bra beneath.
You felt him falter, brow furrowing in confusion. “How does this…?”
You turned around on your knees, back to him. “It unclips at the back,” you murmured, sweeping your hair over one shoulder to expose the delicate line of your spine.
“Just three hooks. Here.” You reached behind you, fingertips brushing the clasp.
His fingers met yours, searching as he followed your instructions. A breath escaped him, soft and shallow, before he found the hooks and gently undid them one click at a time.
The tension in your shoulders eased just a fraction. “There you go.”
His hands hovered, uncertain now that your bare back was before him like an empty canvas. You tossed the bra to the floor and reached back, guiding his hands to your waist, then up, encouraging him to cup the full weight of your breasts. He was hesitant at first, the pads of his fingers a little stiff, a little too tense. The contrast of warm flesh and cool vibranium sent a delicious shiver spiralling through you, eliciting a long, satisfied sigh.
That sound seemed to break whatever restraint he was clinging to. His grip shifted, confidence blooming. He began to knead and explore, thumbs brushing experimentally over your nipples. When a vibranium finger flicked one with the barest touch, you let out a soft whine, your back arching to press yourself flush against his chest.
“I think I like this,” he murmured, voice husky at your ear, breath fanning warm across your skin.
You let out a breathless laugh, turning slowly to face him again, your balance steady in his palms. His hands slid down to anchor you at the hips.
His gaze lingered, not just on your chest, but on your face. Like he was still processing, still memorising. Desire curled in your gut, a heartbeat between your legs. You fought the urge to reach down, to chase the friction your body was begging for.
Bucky leaned forward and kissed you again. Something in him had shifted. He wasn’t following anymore. He was moving with intent. And when he gently rolled you back onto the pillows, his weight settling above yours, your breath hitched.
You tried to ignore the instinct curling tight in your belly. Tried not to let the familiar feeling of being beneath someone stir that old panic. Like the walls might close in around you. Like control was slipping just a little too far out of reach.
His mouth trailed kisses down your neck, across your collarbone, between your breasts, and you squirmed ever-so-slightly beneath him. His tongue flicked out to taste your skin, a soft sound of satisfaction humming against you. He licked a rough stroke over one of your nipples as if it were a primal instinct.
You groaned, one hand gently scratching across his back, the other through his hair. His knee slotted between your thighs, parting them easily, the gold fabric of your dress bunched at your waist. Only a thin slip of lace remained between you. He didn’t look down. He didn’t need to, his lips were still worshipping your chest.
His vibranium hand curved over your knee, pushing you open further, his hips grinding lightly into yours, and that flicker of alarm surged. Too strong to ignore.
You moved fluidly before it could root itself. With practised grace, you flipped the two of you, rolling him onto his back and straddling his hips in a single, breathless motion. He made no protest, just let out a pleased groan as his hands found your thighs.
You exhaled slowly, grounding yourself in the present. In him. His wide eyes blinking up at you, still caught in the moment.
He didn’t notice the shift. Didn’t ask why you took control again.
And you were grateful.
As you steadied yourself above him, he sat up suddenly, arms sliding around your waist. His mouth pressed a slow kiss to your sternum. He looked up at you, lashes fluttering, nose brushing the curve of your breast.
Your breath caught in your throat.
As he pressed another kiss to your skin, you realised—without a doubt—that maybe this was the single most erotic moment of your life.
Not the act, not the heat of it all but him. The way he looked at you. The gentleness in his hands. The trust humming beneath his skin like a live wire. The way your name might’ve been forming behind his teeth, even if he hadn’t spoken it.
You sank your hands into his hair and pulled him closer.
You were still tangled in each other, the heat between your bodies humming like static, when the apartment door swung open with an easy, unthinking click.
“Hey Buck, you sure you don’t wanna come out with us—?”
The cheerful voice stopped cold.
Steve.

Various God related questions:
Considering how both Gingi is a timeline anomaly, what is God’s actual thoughts on that? Does he appreciate having something he hasn’t seen before and isn’t able to predict? I know you mentioned it making him uneasy, but is there anything else that fuels that?
How did he become a hobo? Was it by choice, or did shit just kind of happen? Either way it is unfortunately very funny.
Are there any OTHER particularly Gingi-level-weird timeline specific events he’s witnessed? Whether they’re native to the playable DT or not
The relationship thing in his character sheet is SO upsetting so I’m asking a few in rapid succession here about that because I love this guy: Has he married anyone we get to MEET? Has he given up on that completely? Does he ever see himself being with anyone else (Would he ever consider pursuing a relationship with the player?), or is he content in platonic relationships? Does he feel the same sort of loneliness about getting along with the others?
Thank you I love him he looks like he smells like vomit and dumpster juice ✨🩷
I'll try to answer these without giving too much away. I have a few short stories I might write one day to answer one or two of these questions in more detail.
God does NOT appreciate Gingi's unpredictability and is more unnerved by Gingi than he lets on. There's some interesting underlying characterization that I made the decision not to have God express at any point outside of a few subtle hints, but his past experiences definitely give him a sort of bias both for/against Gingi's own struggles. There is another thing that fuels it, but that's a much longer topic.
The answer to this one kinda hinges on that other thing I didn't reveal. He's where he wants to be and there's a reason for it that he's smart enough not to state.
He's never seen anything exactly like Gingi before, but he has witnessed horrors beyond anything you and have seen, which he will never ever forget.
Think about the movies Groundhog Day or Highlander. The guy's aware that every relationship he forms is going to end with a definite loss. The guy hides it relatively well, but he's constantly aware of incoming loss and does his best to not think about it, being drunk constantly. He pushes people away because he thinks he has to, ironically, not unlikely Gingi at the start of the game. He definitely would not be interested in Gingi either.
God's kind of an odd character because he's not super relevant to the plot of DT, outside of his role as a bit character, but his odd relationship to time means he has information that nobody else in the cast (who's still around) is aware of. But, because of his tangential relevance, I don't use the character as much as the datables.
He is crafty, and can (somewhat) defend himself if his back is put up against a wall, but he's not at all powerful. As such, he plays his cards close to his chest and is generally distrustful of those around him. There's only one scene in the game where he relaxes and lets stuff slip (his behemoth of the scene on day 2 of Randy's route) and it's really the only scene in the game where he's genuinely honest. He can even acknowledge Gingi's status as a time anomaly directly in it, ofc.
There's a lot of unused God dialogue that talks about how DT's timelines are structured, what the fabric of space time is and even what God thinks of Gingi *exactly*, but it remains to be seen where (and if) I could use this stuff one day :)

SPEAKING OF POLY MARAUDERS
I know you had posted about their confessions- but I’d love to know more about how you think they all came together. Specifically like in the no voldemort world because we hate him of course.
I love love love Peter and I’m so happy you actually include him btw
What do you think about Peter and Remus being the first to hook up with each other because James and Sirius are busy pretending they don’t have a thing for their fellow marauders?
i only work in a no voldemort au (i hate dealing with racist implications of that entire plot point)
and to me, poly marauders have always included Peter. it's weird that people don't include him (i adore Peter too.)
anyways back to the ask...
Remus and Peter don't stop kissing after their first time. they'll be in the library studying and Peter biting his lips as he's writing something down, and Remus is just staring because he looks so cute like that. and he pulls Peter up from the chair without explanation and drags him to a corner where he leans close and tells him that he's going to teach Peter how to kiss someone properly. and Peter's just staring up at him, confused because he didn't think their kiss was bad, but if anyone was going to know better, it would be moony. and so Remus 'teaches' Peter how to kiss. and Peter actually gets so much better Remus has to constantly pull himself away because he's going to end up doing more than just kiss Peter, and it was already hard enough.
and much like their first kiss, Peter confesses he's never slept with someone (and of course Remus know he's pulling Peter away at every opportunity to kiss him senseless and he making sure no tries to ask him out) and like there first time Remus offer himself. and Remus makes sure it all goes well, giving Sirius and James a prank to work on and making sure that no one will bother him after he goes to his dorm room.
Remus makes sure to teach Peter everything he knows and they even try thing Remus has only heard about. and their first time is soft and full of quiet giggles from Peter and huffs of amusement from Remus. and the cuddle all night with Remus running this finger through Peter's hair while he sleeps.
the next morning, they wake up early, Peter shy and blushing while Remus just remains sitting on the bed, smiling at him because he wants more of this. more of Peter is his bed, more giggles from him, more make out sessions that go past kissing. and so that morning before James and Sirius walk in Remus ask if Peter would consider dating him because he really like Peter and he doesn't want anything they have to end.
and Peter just walks up to him and holds on to his shoulder as he give him a soft kiss and doesn't pull to far from him and tell him he also really likes this and he was getting nervous thinking he was going to be the one who's going to ask Remus.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the whole contract between Gabriel and Tomoe that demands that Adrien and Kagami be together wasn't established earlier or it was only established in S5? Because that'd explain why Gabriel and Tomoe are obsessed about Adrigami while Tom and Sabine don't bat an eye to Lukanette.
(Post that spawned this ask)
We're never actually told why Tomoe and Gabriel are obsessed with Adrigami. The best we get are the following two bits of dialogue from Protection:
Dialogue 1
Kagami: Looks like your doubts are finally gone. Adrien: Yes, Kagami. I'm ready. Tomoe: (to Gabriel) Made for each other. Just as planned. Gabriel: Perfection calls for perfection. Kagami: (to Adrien) What are you doing? Adrien: (typing on his phone) I'm going to prepare a special picnic, for just the two of us, no friends around, no outside pressure. And I'm inviting Marinette right now. Hopefully she can be herself, (Tomoe and Gabriel gasp in shock in the unexpected turn of events.) and finally open her heart and soul to me, free of her fears.
Dialogue 2
Tomoe: All of our plans are falling apart! You were supposed to control your son, Gabriel! Gabriel: And you, your daughter! Tomoe: My daughter's so perfect she doesn't need me to control her! (points her bokken at Gabriel) Gabriel: (pushes away Tomoe's bokken with his finger) Well, it appears she does. Tomoe: It's not my child who's falling for someone completely wrong for her! Gabriel: But she seems to be the one encouraging him!
As you can see, these don't mention a contract. They just imply that Gabriel and Tomoe want Adrigami to be a thing because... reasons?
The contract thing you're referring to comes from the season three episode Animaestro which briefly showed Gabriel and Tomoe signing a contract:
Tumblr media
[Image description: a contract with Gabriel's signature and Tomoe's stamp of approval]
As of season six, we still don't know what exactly this contract was about. We just know that it exists and even that is only true if you remember this brief moment from Animaestro. It's totally fair if you forgot about this five-second scene because I don't think that the contract was ever discussed in a later episode. (Please correct me if I'm wrong about that!)
The writers have claimed that this contract scene was here to hint at Gabriel and Tomoe having some sort of master plan, but that's incredibly lackluster writing. A scene of two business people signing a contract is not foreshadowing mutual villainy because signing a contract is not weird behavior. It obviously is here to mean something since the writers chose to include it, but nothing about this scene screams "villainy!" At least, it doesn't on Tomoe's side. Gabriel's a known villain so anything he does may be villainous.
Business contracts happen all the time, this contract was signed in an incredibly public setting, and we later see Gabriel using Tsurugi tech in his house, a thing that's introduced long before Tomoe is revealed to be evil! Because of Animaestro's spot in the timeline and because the contract is signed so publicly, it's perfectly logical to see this brief contract moment and read it as the writers setting up Gabriel having the Tsurugi robots in later episodes. You could also see this and assume it's setting up for Tomoe to be akumatized later the way Audrey Bourgeois was purposely set up for all of her akumatizations.
This contract being about the mansion's robots thing is still the only solution that makes any sense because - as far as we know - the only evil collaborations between Gabriel and Tomoe were the sentikids and the alliance rings. The sentikids obviously happened pre-canon so the contract can't be about that and the alliance plan only existed after Gabriel got the miraculous so the contract clearly wasn't related to that either. It also probably wasn't related to Gabriel and Tomoe being the world's most obsessive Adrigami shippers. The contract was never mentioned during that arc, the arranged-marriage plot didn't show up until season five (two season post contract), and there are some subtle implications that Adrigami may have always been the plan in which case any related contracts would have been signed when these two were kids unless the arranged marriage is a new thing in which case why was this suddenly a thing? What benefit did it give Tomoe? She's already rich and Gabriel was a fashion designer! That's not very useful to a tech guru nor is it an elite skill set she couldn't find without selling out her daughter.
If this contract was supposed to be related to the Adrigagmi stuff, then the writers needed to start the arranged marriage plot in season three or four so that a viewer could logically tie the two events together because there was no reason for Tomoe and Gabriel to delay on the arranged marriage plot once the contract was signed.
That's not what the writers did, though. Gabriel and Tomoe had nothing to do with Adrigami getting together in season three and season four wrote Adrigami like some sort of secret relationship. Lies has Kagami straight up state that she had to lie to be with Adrien which makes no sense if Gabriel and Tomoe wanted this relationship to happen:
Kagami: You know, I lied too. I lied to my mother so that we could see each other. I even lied to her when I said you came here with me tonight. I lied at every fencing lesson so we could spend more time together. You see, we're both a couple of liars. Except I lie because I want to be with you. (points at him accusingly) You lie… because you don't want to be with me.
I was genuinely shocked when season five revealed that Tomoe and Gabriel knew about Adrigami. I thought they were either totally oblivious or actively against it because they clearly did nothing to support it. They didn't even know that their kids broke up!
In other words - like many things in this show - the arranged marriage plot was either a last minute addition or terribly written.

Any tips or ideas for GMing the end of the Age of Reclamation? I want to be sure to get all the ramifications of the Divine Gate falling, and of the different social movements that come from the loss of the deities, but most of all I’m curious what someone as invested as I am in the narrative cohesion of Exandria would like to see in it.
Honestly? I don't really have tips - I don't GM anything in Exandria that will touch on it (Netherdeep game scheduling has been rough and I don't run any other games) and while I very much enjoyed EXU Divergence and Wildemount Wildlings I didn't really have much in the way of like, theorycraft/worldbuilding concepts in mind based on them.
Also, not to put too fine a point on it, but one aspect of why I think Campaign 3's plot struggled so mightily is that divinity and organized religion in Exandria were never very well laid out - @the-littlest-goblin has a post about the former, and I know I've touched on the latter a few times. Vasselheim is the cradle of civilization and a religious hub for the prime deities, but there doesn't appear to be any centralized power (Fy'ra and Morrighan do not seem to go through Vasselheim to be named champions) - and why would there be, given that the gods can communicate around anyone who claims to be a mouthpiece? The reality of the presence of the gods was, again as the-littlest-goblin pointed out, not really explored well within the text (and I include any of the texts). I think Matt is rightfully lauded for worldbuilding in terms of political structures, history, geography, and even new systems of magic; but actually, the specific role of religion has always been a weakness that we simply did not see until the role of religion and the gods became a major focus and the narrative infrastructure to support it was simply not there.
So anyway with that in mind: I actually wonder if we'd see Vasselheim actually become much more like our real Vatican/catholic church now that there is no divine voice of say, The Stormlord available to everyone. The idea that pre-Catatheosis Vasselheim was akin to the Vatican was very much not supported and entirely, in my opinion, projection from people who struggled to imagine something wholly unlike our world; but now that Exandria doesn't have gods that can simply talk to you (especially during the decade-plus period at least before the gods are found again), I think more formally organized religion and more authority among religious leaders than previously would feel realistic. I also suspect there will be perhaps increased religiosity in the world - if you cannot feel their presence, you may seek out religion for ritual and community instead. Ironically, I think Exandria might go from a very "religion as personal journey" almost modern attitude to a rather more medieval one.
I also think that false prophets/people claiming to be gods will be at minimum a cottage industry, especially a few years after; I'm unsure if the demons as we saw during the campaign will come back or if the bloody bridge/leylines were part of that problem so you can do whatever fits your particular campaign for now; and I think that some people will lose faith.
It's not all scams and the development of Fantasy Catholicism, though; I think the positives are going to be that the Accord will have established some degree of international cooperation and eroded the isolationism we saw in Campaigns 1 and 2, and of course Ruidians and access to Ruidus itself will open up entirely new perspectives! I think there will be leaps in biological research particularly, given that was the focus of Ruidian science. I would like to think that surviving members of the Grim Verity and the reveals of Ruidus's nature, not to mention the fact that vaulting everything up didn't stop Ludinus, will lead to an opening of said vaults and perhaps even an increased focus on Exandrian historical research; the perspective of the Kryn, now less isolated, will be incredibly valuable here. I also would like to think that the Empire being in some degree of turmoil will resolve, but with the dissolution of the Assembly. My guess is it will just continue in the Dwendal line, but if you want to focus on Wildemount I think you could make an argument for the Empire to follow in the footsteps of Tal'Dorei's relatively recent transition to a council (or for upheaval or even a civil war to lead to that transition). Either way I expect the Clovis Concord and Dynasty to develop more of a relationship and more power on the continent.
I also wonder if the international community will focus again on Aeor (now that Ludinus isn't trying to control access) and if there were be redoubled efforts to address the corruption of the Savalirwood. (Man, Ludinus REALLY fucked Uthodurn over as collateral in multiple ways, huh). It really might be something of an industrial revolution for a world that was already on the cusp of it.
Finally, think about all the sealed things or long-running enchantments that failed - what happens with them? Some might be cool, Umudara; others might be violent require further cooperation to address, like Desirat. This could be a great hook for adventures you run.

Some thoughts on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 9 hours in [no spoilers]
I pre-ordered the game bc I was So Very Excited about it, and since I'm enjoying it a lot I thought I could maybe sway someone into buying it by promoting it a little <3
Steam page
I'm not a video game critic or anything, so it's just a bunch of Personal Thoughts, very much rooted in my past gaming experiences. Please beware.
Graphics
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(all screenshots are mine taken with DLSS DLAA and Medium-High settings)
The game is SO pretty it's unreal. I admittedly don't have very high standards in that regard [it's kind of easy to impress me. sorry], but all locations I've seen so far have a distinct visual style and are just a constant joy to look at. The character models are also very beautiful. Sometimes I open the inventory menu just to look at the close-ups of Lune or Maelle <3 (Gustave is there too ig)
Combat
It plays like a mix of a turn-based JRPG with soulslike elements. What it means is that all characters have a variety of skills with elemental affinities that can play off very differently depending on your party composition and which elements an enemy is weak to (so you get your usual JRPG bullshit), but you can also shoot, parry and dodge in real-time (so you also get your usual soulslike bullshit). Oh, and there are some short QTEs that allow you to increase your skill damage.
If you'd like a visual on what that actually looks like, here's a short video taken by me:
I'm enjoying the combat a LOT. I 💙 parrying. And mixing up skills to create efficient set-ups. What if we all held hands so hard we oneshotted enemies. What then!
I also may be addicted to the fire element. Maybe that will change in the future.
Exploration
The game doesn't really have an open world - it plays more like a bunch of locations that unlock in the hub-like main world as you progress the story (the locations feel more like DAVG than DAI, if we were to start comparing things).
Exploration is actually the only area of the game I have complaints about because the game could really use some navigational trackers. The game doesn't have a map, and there's literally no way to tell where you are supposed to go to advance the plot. When you enter a new location, you just kind of go forward and hope for the best.
It's a problem for me bc I Don't want to advance the plot a lot of the time, actually, and explore the optional paths instead. But you literally can't know what path is the optional one except for Hunches.
But if I, an aphantasiac with severe navigational difficulties, can handle the locations fine most of the time, then normal, well-adjusted people also can, probably. I think?
Story
It's just Nice. It's intriguing enough that I'm always excited whenever I know I'm about to see a cutscene, but so far I still don't feel like I've seen enough to actually have an opinion on it. The intrigue keeps me going, but it's more of a "I wonder what's going to happen next" than "Ohh I LOVE what's happening now" kind of feeling.
None of the characters are annoying, and there is a certain charm to everyone you meet, so that's a big plus.
OST
I LOVE THE OST SO MUCH. Hands down my favourite thing about the game. It's absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, it's NEVER missed so far for me. There were so many times I ran into enemies specifically because I wanted to catch more of that combat music. It reminds me of Nier: Automata, sort of!
If you want some representative of what's out there, I really liked these songs: Goblu, Lumière
Something like that! Should anyone have any questions lmk.

I AM FREE (finally finished my 25-chapter original story huehuehue, though it's just the first draft and I need to edit... but that's future me's problem)
So I can finally write fanfic again huhuhu (also I promise to add a bit to the Tales Beyond the Covenant fic and answer the asks in my inbox later sksksk). Since I have been bombarded with so many brainrots throughout April thanks to the OPMeg discord server, I don't know which AUs/story ideas to write about so it is poll time!
The explanations will be down below so you know the context of each choice.
SG Primes + Royal AU (Multichapter)
The fact that I haven't written anything for the original baseline of this AU is crazy but well it's my fault for liking Shattered Glass too much. So essentially, this is a Royal AU where the main four (OP, Megatron, Elita, and Bee) are children of the Primes - who are essentially ruling over Iacon. Sentinel does not betray them (at least in baseline because the baseline version of this AU is happy).
Unfortunately this is SG so it's the horror version. In this AU, the Primes are tyrants and the main four are still related to them. In this case, however, the High Guard actually plan to stage a coup. Plot twist though, instead of Megatron joining them, it's SG OP because in this AU. Megatron is kinda busy... being reprogrammed into being obedient by Primatronus. So OP wants to save him here.
Belobog AU (Multichapter)
So, as some people can probably tell from the profile picture, I really love Honkai Star Rail (and especially my wife, Bronya skskksks). Well, I am very delusional and when I was looking at Bronya and Seele's splash art, I was like... their color schemes are kinda like SG OPMeg hahaha. So yeah, this is fanfic is essentially inspired by the Belobog chapter in Honkai Star Rail.
Just to give a bit of idea, this is actually a bit of an off-shoot from the Sole Survivor Prima AU, since here Prima take the place of Cocolia. Prima here is the only baseline version, except he's corrupted by the Matrix and Primus (who replaces the Stellaron). In this case, Prima survives Sentinel's ambush attempt but Primus still stops energon from flowing to dissuade the Quintessons from attacking.
SG TFP AU (One-Shot)
So this one is not as fleshed out since there is only a certain scenario that I really want to write about. I briefly mentioned it within my multi-SG fanfic, but I like the idea that in SG TFP, Orion genuinely did get corrupted by the Matrix. However, when he got amnesia, he went back to being Orion. Still, Megatron couldn't really recognize him so he kinda sent him off the Nemesis.
Orion does become Optimus again, except this time he's in symbiosis with the Matrix, so he remembers everything now and is no longer corrupted. He wants to win the war here so he can ensure a world of peace and order for his conjunx. This one-shot is essentially just an exploration of what would happen if Optimus actually did win the war and captured Megatron afterwards.
Fliers as Vampires AU (One-Shot)
This is a bit of a silly idea but I love vampires so I thought what if the High Guard were all vampires since they're all fliers (I believe) in TFOne. This is also combined with the idea that the seekers were the original vampires and they essentially infected the rest of the High Guard when they were on the surface. The City of Vos also exists here and Starscream is the Winglord cause I think that would be cool.
So this is like a few years after the events of the movie in TF:One. Optimus is weirded out that Megatron "disappears" after he was banished with the High Guard and is informed about another city in Cybertron, which is Vos. Like they end up allying to defeat the Quintessons and when Optimus goes to visit that's when he meets a reformatted Megatron who has been turned into a flier.
TFOne Amnesia AU (One-Shot)
Nothing really elaborate, but I would just like to write an Amnesia AU for TFOne and I swear this time this is baseline and not SG lmao. So like you know, typical scenario, Megatron loses his memory and reverts back to D-16. Optimus finds him and decides to bring him back to Iacon. He's unable to really put him in jail so he just keeps him around even though he feels guilty about doing so.
However, since I am a bit of a sucker for possessive Optimus, he just does his best to essentially keep Dee from finding out he's Megatron and the leader of the Decepticons. Like he feels guilty essentially confining Dee and kinda taking away his agency, but Optimus just wants his best friend back, even if it means keeping him in this state. This will have consequences though lmao.
Vessel Prima AU (Multichapter)
Another off-shoot of the Sole Survivor Prima AU, because someone kept me up until 5:00 AM just because of this concept. So it's essentially the same thing with the Sole Survivor Prima AU, except in this case Prima isn't... just Prima. So the concept is, as the first Prime, Prima can actually hear Primus in his head and at times can be controlled by Primus.
In comparison to the original fanfic, in this AU, Orion didn't get invited to archive information about the Primes. Instead, he acts reckless about looking for information to the point that he ends up attracting Prima's attention, and therefore Prima finds out about Megatron through him. So they end up getting dragged by the High Guard and arrested lmao.
Sole Survivor Prima AU (Multichapter)
So I know I already wrote like two one-shots for this AU but I do genuinely want to write a fully-fleshed out fanfic for this (like having multiple chapters), so I can actually discuss more about the Primes as well as build up the horror lmao. So yeah, this is just an expansion upon the idea of the Sole Survivor Prima AU where I actually write more about Prima and D-16.
There's still some OPMeg here, however they're not the focus. I will be changing it from the original premise. In this new scenario, I am going back to the actual original version (of the first Megatron being related to Prima and Megatronus AU talked about in the OPMeg server), where Prima ends up finding Dee by accident cause I like Dee just dealing with the horror of that all on his own.

Knowing that most wildcards if not all were made in a week between the sessions, it feels like a much bigger task than sorting through viewer suggestions and making them up from scratch, tho I can't know for sure.
Yeah, the difficulty of the tasks varied a lot, but it kinda didn't bother me too much, because then they could be done with the task and do their own thing. I did love Pearl's task of getting hearts from people, but I'm a Shadowmoon shipper and the moment it created has been ingrained in my heart.
From Etho's episode I mainly remember the part where he washes himself away, so that he doesn't actually move, but moves. I'm a Doctor Who fan and I loved the reference, but yeah, quite limiting, especially with how they have to travel some time between bases and you can't know if someone is spying on you from afar.
Hm, you could say keeping it a secret is like if everyone was a boogeyman or well, playing a game of mafia. I do remember that a few times others were able to guess the task, but if they wanted to help the person, they played a game of crocodile, not being able to say anything outright, just imply.
To me a lot of tasks felt opposingly team uniting. With how Bdubs task started the whole Mounder thing. And then Joel's task (the cult one) brought Mounders even closer in a way, pft. And sometimes guessing the task incorrectly spawned an event, like almost the entire server hanging out at Pearl's mound base. Also Pearl helping Bdubs and Mumbo with their tasks (dragon, cursed tower). So yeah, I love Matchbox and Mailbox.
Out of context, but i remember people (CCs as their characters and the fans) were saying that Mounders aren't loyal and will fall apart or something. And in the end, Mumbo started to act as a red and tried to kill his teammates a few times, but they still accepted him. You can tell I love Mounders, tho all the other teams were great. The dog boys had such a fun dynamic, them often going to talk to BigB or Scar and having silly interactions together. To me the Bamboozlers flow so well from Secret Life: the winner, the unlucky and the loser /affectionate, they're definitely my favorite team that happened in Wild Life. Pearl and Mumbo would have fitted in with them too, all a little bit pathetic.
I agree with the love island team point? They are such a fun team up and there could have been more. Definitely the fact that BigB started as a loner because of his task and leaned into the backrooms creature vibe made it seem like he had to play two different characters at a time? Perhaps, that is not what you're talking about, but people were suspicious that BigB won't stay loyal and is more by himself, but they trusted each other. I don't fully remember the moment, but I think Skizz made someone think that he believes that BigB is a traitor, but then turned on them instead. Or this is memories connecting wrong bits. I don't joke about having troubles rewatching stuff, even when I love it.
Oh, yeah. Mine is all subjective and personal heaven, which I know is flawed, but I see the good and the bad bits and enjoy it as a whole, like you are with Wild Life. I am not a Third Life lover 😔 It's good, but if I'm ranking it, it will go to the bottom (all cause Pearl wasn't in it /hj)
Yes! It all felt like wacky cartoon episodes, which to me is a high praise, as I love Adventure Time and other episodic shows with an overarching plot. Again with my hyperfixation, Pearl died a lot, she literally had the first death on the server (i am replying as I am reading or else I'll forget my thoughts, but you mentioned it and we kinda divided on it? I agree, but also I can excuse it. It's brutal and unfair, but it did help others avoid the same fate. This is also a point in the: I think they should have given themselves more time to test the wildcards, because it feels like a thing you could fix, if found). But it was all because of a part of a mechanic of a wildcard that has not been found out before, which she immediately shares with her teammates. The opportunity to play around and find a way to work the wildcard in your favor or at least to not die from it is amazing. It just felt dissapointing, when people were trying out ways to have an advantage over snails in a way and got punshed for persisting and being curious (the inconsistency of when the snail jumps in your face. I know it's like 3 blocks but some were closer or farther, and with Pearl's second death potentially being caused by Aussie ping). I understand that if there was a way to battle snails completely, everyone would have gotten rid of them in the first hour and there is no more wildcard. But the whole point of an immortal snail is that you get some advantage (money in the original case) and you can figure out things to feel at least somewhat safer.
I would have said that making each snail have their own thing to slow them down/make them stop for a moment and have some cool down for that effect is too much, but they made a whole superpower wildcard so.. It's different but something lesser, like being able to feed them a certain somewhat rare item to slow them could be cool? Idk if the range could allows it, but if you can click on snail with an item (like feeding a dog a steak) and not get it jump on your face immediately. There is a possibility of no one even figuring that out especially if the items are too rare, but at least there would have been something? For Bdubs to feed his snail a clock and make it slower or stop for a certain amount of time with a cooldown (you would have a moment to breath, but you might also forget about it, so it's still a risk). I just feel like they are smart enough to flesh it out more, and I never fully understood why they put such a harsh time limit on themselves. They were most likely concepting wildcards for longer, but when you actually get the moving snail and test it out, you might have to fix some issues and if it's too close to deadline, you'll just have to give up on a good idea.
I know that if you are creating a big time sinking project, you have to organize and pay every person who is involved in the creation, so extending the time frame or the complexity, would have upped the cost significantly. I read some comment about how they could have made a whole series out of each of the wildcard, and I am on the side that having a new thing each week is a cool concept. The only part I do agree is the superhero wildcard. I just think a superhero life series (or maybe a sibling series) could be genuinely fun. Am a sucker for AUs.
Snails were very cute and funny, but they were undeniably too much. They had to stop the session earlier and all the CCs were exhausted by the end of it. You can see how the death count skyrockets because of snail, and the balancing by giving players 6 lives worked out i guess, but them ending early means if it wasn't stopped, there could have been even more deaths or even a first person to get out of the series in session 3(4?).
And final deaths are supposed to be at least somewhat tragic or emotional (in a funny or sad way). Skizz's and Mumbo's final deaths were cool, but Gem, Impulse, BibB, Scar died in a less fair(?) way. And Grian knows how important it can be to get out of a series in a satisfying end, Jimmy and Lizzie dying was sad, but epic and he helped to achieve that.
Okay, that's a fair point. I was afraid of getting into life series, because it felt like there were so many people and all had their own unique storyline. To me, I just accepted that I will get information about their videos secondhand, and if it intrigues me, I would go and watch the episode myself. I am happy that it was enjoyable for you and easier to engage with.
Big groups feel clanky to me in a way that everybody is trying to help the team, but when you have to listen to so many people at once, it becomes either a corporate meeting or a hangout at the loud bar. I do understand the appeal of a bigger group interacting, but I always feel like a lot more people get talked over and if there is no enemy, there is no conflict and there is no one to fight? A lot of times people were trying to mention who they were enemies with and it consisted of "hmh, we are kinda okay with them, and them too, and them". To which, Secret life didn't have that much outright betrayal or enemies, it was kinda more sitcom-ey. There were a lot of rivals, not enemies. In wild life it feels like there are almost no evemies and no rivals. Even bringing up the Impossible Minecraft, it's a smaller series, but there is a collaborative process, so big groups are encouraged, because there is no competition (the winners and placements don't actually mean much in the same way as MCC or similar stuff does obviously. It's all more about people creating a narrative and a story).
I do think Scar is a pretty good player, just unlucky at times. He did win by his own strength in Secret Life and got to the end in Third Life (while being the first one to go down to red and so early), he and Grian also being the 4th(?) soulmates to die and it was Grian who died, I'm pretty sure. You might not be implying that, I just dislike when people kinda dismiss his achievements.
I also enjoyed the Gs. The only thing I have a beef is that Tango was hanging around them at the start and I was so hoping for him to join them, tho the Tuff guys is also cool. I do find it funny how Gem and Pearl exchanged teammates from last time.
This all is a toll on anyone and when you have to organize and also be involved in the project, where your friends's income partially depends on you and you have to try to cater to them and to the viewers all at once. And well, when you see your friend so exhausted and trying so much to make you enjoy the series, I think it would feel brutal to complain about anything. They're friends and I don't know how they interact behind the scenes, but I would never want to upset my friend over something like that. Of course, if someone didn't vocalize their concerns, it's partially on them for doing so, but it's understandable. There is a part of me that wants Grian to delve more into different series, and with Impossible Minecraft, it seems like something he had in mind? Fans like to find parallels and will always compare previous seasons, so anything new will be met with a bigger criticism. Impossible Minecraft didn't capture everyone's attention, but I still feel it got good reviews and players seem to enjoy it. There is a difference that even through you can analyze CCs as characters, it is definitely much less roleplay and more survival. Not everyone found it appealing, but people also weren't compelled to compare it to life series, because it is distinctly different and we got both traffic and it. If Grian makes more of completely different series with no overarching expectations or limitations, it could be cool. Some people might be angry that they have to wait for a new life series season longer because of it, but it's not like we were ever really promised it and even if we were, he can decide to not go forth with it, if he wants to, it is his project. Idk if all my blank suggestions or ideas are out of place, but I very much love all the CCs and wouldn't want for any of them to get burned out and not participate in the life series or other projects.
I completely understand and agree with your whole last paragraph. Mine is similar, just replace Wild Life with Secret life. And I still enjoyed a lot of Wild Life, and I do have my own criticism of the Secret Life. I do understand people voicing and sharing their complaints, and not all should be like, thought out essay. Sometimes you watch a movie and find it meh, but can't put it into words. People not wanting to give Wild Life or any season a chance for whatever personal reason is understandable. Grian and others are still content creators and have to take into account a criticism of a casual viewer, which most of their viewers consist of I would think. But that's kinda why still discussing those things in the fandom is important. How would Grian know what we want to see, if he can only see the passerby viewer say "meh, not the same" and nothing else. Being afraid to hurt the CC can lead to it either way, when fans lose the interest and stop watching at all. It's not that Wild Life was horrible, it's that a lot of fans felt unheard. I assume that when you are making content for a long time, it can become stale and samey and you might lose confidence of if your content is actually good or not. They became CCs, because they wanted to share something that people would love, so hearing back is useful. When you start to see anycritisism as hate, it makes fans not want to share their thoughts and CCa are left one on one with angry/indifferent redditors (idk how bad reddit is, never used it besides googling weird things).
Idk where Grian saw that fans didn't want for him and Scar to team up, most fans love their dynamic. I do know some were complaining about the sameness of the teams, like the 3Gs. But some simply called 3G toxic, which is not completely untrue and doesn't mean they disliked the team? They have a very complicated history and that's the fun part of them trying to rebuild this. It's unrealistic for them to just forget everything and forgive. You can say that you forgive, but that doesn't automatically rewrite how you feel about it. There was a great episode in Amphibia that ended with the main character Anne forgiving a side character Hop Pop, but in the next episode Anne and Hop Pop are being weird and it escalates into a fight. There were still things unsaid and Anne just bottled everything up to try to move away from the situation, they needed more talk and more time to truly understand and forgive. I know that I reference a scripted cartoon show and Life Series is not a scripted play, but it is a roleplay for a lot of CCs, and dnd shows how improvisation can create great narrativess. It wouldn't be a death series without all the drama and all the betrayals and complicated relationships.
I hope this ask won't get killed by Tumblr, idk what's the word limit and how it works in general. I also reread it just once, sorry for any inconsistencies. Thank you for your time!
Hey! Sorry that it took so long for me to respond, but this was a really long ask that I had to break down paragraph by paragraph, which isn’t a bother! It just means that it takes me a little longer to respond to.
The problem that I had with the tasks was when tasks were too hard or had players do something consistently throughout the episode that didn’t really make their episode much more interesting. For example, I loved the concept of Etho’s weeping angel task. I’m also a Doctor Who fan! It’s just, yeah. It was difficult for him to enforce when in an open space. If the tasks were consistently like that, then I wouldn’t care as much, but it felt unfair for some people to be able to progress with more freedom than others. It wasn’t that big of an issue, of course. It’s just a little pet peeve.
As a com sci major, oh my gosh I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to program all of those wild card in such a short amount of time, especially the ones that were only decided upon in response to episodes (I believe the quiz bot was originally a scrapped wild card but was then brought back to the workshop last minute in response to players’ performances, but I may be misremembering).
I totally recognize that players still found ways to help each other, I just wish out of preference that there was a way for them to have been a little freer with their firm factions. I know that such a rule would be difficult to make concrete decisions on, but I know that Impulse felt disappointed that he didn’t get much of a chance to get to know Scott as a teammate. I don’t think that it was a bad decision. After all, it is called Secret Life. I just wish I could’ve seen certain teams loosen up a little more around each other. You raise a good point about the Mounders, though! They were a really great team. It’s just a shame that other teams weren’t able to communicate with each other as subtly yet effectively as the Mounders. Honestly, I’m not sure why people insist that a team will fall apart before that team shows signs of falling apart. Each season is a fresh start. While there may be history, each person still chooses whether or not to let that go.
God, someone PLEASE make BigB the leader of a big team. I need to observe his behavior in such a role. It's for science.
Third Life isn't at the top of my list either! There's definitely parts of it that I loved, but there were also parts that I was personally frustrated with. It’s not anyone’s fault at all. It’s just a matter of preference. It also totally gets a pardon due to it being the first ever season, but that doesn’t necessarily win it more points in my heart.
Pearl’s first death, I totally excuse it too. I didn’t mean to come off as if I disagree with the decision to keep it in. It’s a game mechanic and all. It just felt like such an unlucky “first to find out” situation, but that's part of the game. As for the snails, Grian didn’t intend for this to be an easy wild card. He expected more player deaths than normal, though he did say that there were still more than he expected. However, he also said that he had a moment where he considered using the Quizbot to gift back lives and decided not to. He wanted players to really feel the cost of each life. It’s a decision that he’s very firm about, and I respect that. I will say that the players who died significantly more than other players had a lot of deaths that were simply careless. There were of course many deaths that were the cost of an experiment or were just so terribly unfortunate (double Bdubs death), but I think a lot of deaths were from not keeping an eye on their snail (Scar gets a pass because his snail was literally turned invisible by other players). Here’s the thing. The problem that many players experimenting with the snails had was that they were experimenting with their own snail. Jimmy is a great example of someone who did NOT experiment with his own snail very much, despite his crazy number of deaths. Most of Jimmy’s snail experiments were done on other people’s snails, and he learned a lot from testing on them. In other words, there were ways to test on the snails that were much less risky, especially if you have a friend helping you.
The feeding the snails to slow them down is a really cool idea! I just don’t know if it would be worth the risk of getting close to your snail nor do I think that the players would have figured out that they could feed their snails, especially if the required items are player specific. I think that it would be a really really cool concept for a longer series or just snails, but it doesn’t work well for only one episode. Grian could’ve told people, of course, but Grian was already telling people quite a bit about the snails and he evidently would have trouble remembering what each snail eats (he couldn’t remember assigned superpowers even though not even everyone had an assigned superpower. I don’t blame him, though. I can’t remember people’s names ten minutes after meeting them, and I can’t throw stones in glass houses).
I would TOTALLY be down for a whole season of superpowers. I thought the superpowers were so so so cool. I do find it weird that someone commented that they could make a whole season out of each wild card when so many people said that the wild cards were boring. I don’t think that would go well in terms of viewership.
I understand finding the snails to be too much, but every creator we know of said that the snails were fun, even if they were stressful. After the snail episode, Grian very urgently checked in with everyone more so than usual, and, according to Impulse, Grian, Martyn, and Skizz, everyone found the snail episode to be a lot of fun. I don’t think that the snails were too much, because everyone had fun and got a great episode out of it. Additionally, due to how long the season surprisingly ended up being, I worry that trying to make the wild cards safer might have resulted in a longer season than the cast was hoping. They typically try to keep the seasons to 8-9 episodes, and Wild Life hit that quota despite the number of people saying that it would definitely be the shortest season ever (which is a little strange considering Double Life was only 6 episodes long, and I doubt that Wild Life ever even looked like it would only be 5 episodes long what with so many people having all of their 6 lives for so long). All in all, I don’t think that the players minded a shorter session when they all got an exciting normal length episode.
I absolutely understand being disappointed in some of the final deaths, but that’s not really a concept that’s new to Wild Life. I mean, while Grian’s final death in Limited Life was thematically cool, it would’ve been pretty anti-climactic without Jimmy’s death. It’s something that happens, and I’ve made my peace with that, especially with how exciting everyone’s life was to me. Of course, I understand that all of that is a matter of personal preference.
I’m glad that you understand my perspective on having an easier time staying caught up. I’ve been watching Minecraft YouTubers for a long time, and I was a big fan of particular big groups. I’m pretty used to hearing them talk over each other and didn’t really think about how that was absolutely a matter of personal history of enjoying hearing 6-10 people in the same call all of the time. I’m sorry to hear that it was more frustrating for you, and I totally understand feeling like there was less content in Wild Life and that the content that was available felt socially clunkier. I hope the next seasons are more your taste!! I got my fair share of what I wanted :)
I understand what you mean about feeling like there were no enemies, but I interpreted that as feeling as though there was no specific enemy (other than everyone vs the family) because most teams had wronged people pretty equally. There was definitely enemies and rivalries, they were just more player specific than team specific, which I understand is unusual for the Life Series. Impulse vs Gem was a pretty big rivalry, as was, of course, Grian vs the Bamboozlers, particularly vs Scar. Mumbo vs Scott was a weirdly spawned in rivalry. I don’t know why Mumbo latched onto that so hard, but I respect him for committing to the bit like that. Another rivalry, which was mostly a result of miscommunication, was Scar vs the Tuff Guys. See, and this is the most insane looney toons incident in the series, Bdubs pretended to do something “tuff” to the Bamboozlers so that Tango and Etho would think he was tuff. Then, Etho actually did something “tuff” to the Bamboozlers, which Scar got payback for by burning down Tango’s base. Tango then got revenge by attacking ALL of the Bamboozlers’ parrots. In other words, I don’t really think that there were fewer enemies and rivalries. I think that the relationships between individual players were just insanely more convoluted. The only team vs team enemies who I can really think of were the Spanners vs the Gs. Grian really wanted to eliminate the try hards who were stronger in numbers (though, as Scott has said, larger groups don’t often do better in the Life Series). The whole thing was like watching a drama series. I really loved it, but I totally understand how it’s a lot more confusing compared to past seasons, where enemies are more straightforward and agreed upon within teams. The problem was that players were having a lot of personal beef with each other but then projecting that onto the other player’s whole team, who hadn’t been told about this beef and is then confused when told that something is wrong. The Gs and the Family were a little better at communicating between each other, but that didn’t mean that they always entirely agreed on how to deal with the issue. As for the storyline and collaboration points, I totally understand wanting that. I think I gave Wild Life a lot more grace, because every episode was like a first episode, where everyone is still helping each other navigate the new gimmick. That’s a part that I, personally, really enjoy about first episodes. This is much less a rebuttal against your point and more of a “this is how I understood it in the moment and a matter of my personal enjoyment, and I absolutely understand if it wasn’t for you”.
Oh I definitely agree that Scar’s a great player! I think he doesn’t really pick up on new situations as quickly, but, once he has it, he’s mastered it. He’s also just a generally skilled player. That man is INSANE in combat. Who taught him how to fight like that. It’s so strange when people say that Scar isn’t a “real” winner. Winners may statistically be more likely to rise from smaller teams, but that doesn’t mean that it’s easiest to get to the finale all by yourself, especially when you have as many enemies as Scar did that season.
I also love the Gs and the Tuff Guys, but GOD I understand what you mean. I’ve been dying for Tango to team up with new people, particularly Scott, for AGES. I want more Snowbugs content. Please, Mr. Smajor, PLEASE team up with different Hermits. I love every single one of Scott’s teams and dynamics, but I’m so eager to see him interact with people we don’t often get to see him hang out with.
I understand what you mean about not wanting to hurt your friends feelings, but Grian specifically requested criticism from each player after every session. There are of course so many ways to go about this situation, and no one way is necessarily the “correct” way to deal with it every time, but, if my friend was asking for criticism, I would want to help them feel as though they have improved their project as much as they are ready to. I’m not saying that I would complain or criticize or be harsh, but expressing an honest opinion about your own experience is so so so critical during game development. This is particularly critical in the Hermitcraft community when Hermits ask other Hermits for criticism. Grian in particular likes honest constructive criticism when he asks for it.
I absolutely agree about wanting to see a variety of series. While I understand that it doesn’t always do as well as their main content, I find it really exciting to see my favorite creators in new situations with different goals and expectations.
When I get upset about people sharing their complaints about Wild Life, I absolutely do not mean people who have real complaints about how the game operates or how it played out. Everyone is entitled to their preferences. What I mean is people who blatantly commented on Grian’s videos stuff like “Grian, these wild cards are boring” and “how is this an episode” or tweeted at him about how they hate Wild Life but didn’t have anything constructive to say about it. There were a lot of comments like this on Jimmy’s Instagram too, and that just sucks. If you have something like that to say about someone’s project that they’re so passionate about, there are more appropriate places to do so. Do I expect Twitter and YouTube comment sections to be free of hate? Absolutely not. However, people need to recognize that Grian doesn’t go on Twitter and YouTube looking for those types of criticisms. The kind of hate that pops up on Twitter and YouTube is so common that a lot of seasoned creators tend to be rather unbothered by hate on those platforms to the point where they skip over genuine criticism. Reddit would’ve probably been a more appropriate and effective platform for constructive criticism when trying to communicate your opinion with people like Grian, who don’t use Tumblr and have been on Twitter and YouTube for too long to take those kinds of comments into consideration.
The Grian and Scar thing was almost entirely Twitter and YouTube. While there are definitely people on Twitter and YouTube who LOVE Scarian, they’re also the platforms that are most concentrated with Scarian haters. It’s really tumblr with a denser population of Scarian fans, but Grian doesn’t get his feedback from tumblr, especially when tumblr and hermittwt are a lot more shy than haters tend to be.
Here's the thing about the Gs. A lot of people were insisting that the Gs were going to break up because “Cleo and Scott always betray Pearl”. This is not true. Scott’s history with Pearl is more complicated, but Scott had a good reason to not want to team with Pearl again. He couldn’t communicate this very well in character, but Scott literally could not be her teammate again, not after he just won Last Life with just Pearl as his teammate for a majority of the season. In other words, Scott didn’t really feel significant negativity towards Pearl until she started acting crazy, which Scott isn’t entirely at fault for. He wasn’t neutral in the matter, but it would be unfair to blame it entirely on him when Martyn immediately abandoning Pearl despite being in the same situation as her, Scar and Ren pushing the “5AM Pearl” character, and, of course, the fact that it was 5AM for her are all fairly equal contributions to the way Pearl decided to present herself. Additionally, Pearl chose to forgive Scott immediately after he blew himself up, which isn’t to say that frustration and resentment can’t ever resurface, especially if the event was particularly traumatic, but Pearl and Scott both gave themselves a whole lot of time to reconcile with what happened and come to forgive each other. It’s also not something that either of them ever bring up, spitefully or not. They’ve never held Double Life against each other even as enemies, and it’s not something they hold against each other when they have disagreements as allies. As for Cleo, Cleo has never betrayed Pearl. Has Cleo been enemies with Pearl, sure! But never when Pearl was ever entitled to Cleo’s loyalty by any means. The Gs was the first time where Cleo and Pearl were on the same team for the whole season, and it's not like Cleo betrayed Pearl during Last Life either. I genuinely believe that there’s an excess of attention on Cleo and Pearl hurting each other because they’re both women in a male-dominated space, because they haven’t been crueler to one another than would be expected of people on different teams. It’s kind of like saying that Scar and Lizzie are a bad team because Lizzie hated Scar in Secret Life, when what we were seeing in Wild Life didn’t show significant evidence of that grudge.
Were the Gs toxic? That’s up to interpretation, but I don’t think it deserved the amount of backlash some people gave it without criticizing other teams. I once made a post about Mumbo “manipulating” Skizz and Grian in the same way that Smajor haters claim that Scott is “manipulative”. I DO NOT believe in what I said about Mumbo. The point of the post was explicitly to show what the narrative looks like on someone who gets way less hate for behaving the same way or “worse”, and I do state that at the end of the post. The Tuff Guys, too, were SO messy. They could rarely agree on anything and almost always resorted to insults, but that wasn’t the result of people who hate each other. That’s the result of people who love each other so so so much and trust each other to know when they do and don’t mean things and to feel safe bringing it up if a line was crossed. I mean, no matter how much Tango and Bdubs insulted and rolled their eyes at Etho or were mockingly offended by his comments, the only time they acted properly upset with him was when they found out that they might not be his priority team (and they didn’t even know about the team he was actually loyal to in the end!). In that same sense, Scott, Pearl, and Cleo are best friends who love each other so much. Their friendship is apparently strong enough to withstand tough breaks in that relationship. It’s one thing to say that you like a team and interpret their dynamic as antagonistic, but it’s another to actually get mad at the actual Scott and Cleo for “teaming up with Pearl to manipulate her”, which was such a common kind of post that I was seeing throughout the first several weeks of Wild Life.
Your ask did not get killed by tumblr! I’m starting to think there may not be a character limit on these things. I copy asks and write out responses in Google docs cause it’s more convenient to access when I have time, and this ask was 5 pages long in 12 point font 1.15 spacing. Whatever kills asks, it’s not word count. Thank you for the ask! I love long asks :D And thank you for your patience! My housing situation has been... weird. I'm not in danger of losing my place or anything; it's just been over-complicated and slow to progress.

first, i just wanted to say that i really appreciate the translations and analysis you did for The Leaders! however, i can't lie, the context you brought made not only the song, but Ateez (especially certain members) now seem kind of...icky.
and don't get me wrong, i'm not out here pretending to know who an idol actually is behind the scenes. for all we know, Seonghwa, San, Jongho, and Wooyoung could be stone cold misogynist andrew tate types. it's just that my ick comes from, y'know, not wanting to support people like that?
on top of that, there seems to be a very public progressive-ness to Ateez with what they've spoken out about and supported. (especially so with the whole World Z lore where Ateez are explicitly cast as rebels and direct opposition to destructive, oppressive authoritarianism that deliberately intends to suck humans dry of their humanity.) so seeing the content of The Leaders is extremely jarring when putting these two theses of the group side by side. (1. we are a group that supports the marginalized and rebels, and hope to help bring about revolution and freedom for a better future; 2. arrogant asshole Renaissance kkondae dreams and beliefs, conformity and hierarchy through punishment and subjugation.)
i don't know if The Leaders (and The Real) coming out in 2021 means that Ateez possibly might have grown a little since then, or if they just recognized that the branding of The Leaders (and its ideas) was not a good idea? and scrapped that branding to something completely opposite because the yikes were too much? or, was The Leaders all kayfabe? half truths? or am i just being a gullible goofball and not recognizing satire/sarcasm in The Leaders because i do be me tho?
do you think Seonghwa, San, Jongho, and Wooyoung (the ones you singled out), or Ateez as a whole really do believe in the ideals of The Leaders? it feels almost uncomfortably not just shock-that-sells. it actually explicitly reminds me of early Eminem, the content of The Slim Shady LP. almost too serious, but still tongue in cheek about the seriousness. but it's real! but it's not. but it's just extrapolations! but it's not. haha jokes on you for believing all this! but for real though...? (insert side eye emoji here)
idk, my thoughts are as scrambled as my eggs rn. also sorry for any grammar, spelling, or punctuation errors! my keyboard is dying on me for some reasonnn
Holy shit - No. You do not need to feel icky about Ateez. I do not have any reason to think they are like Andrew Tate. I think all of them would be horrified at the comparison. I also don't think they are anything like Eminem not least because they are not writing the songs.
Also! Ateez in particular and Kpop in general are rarely trying to express personal opinions of the performing artists nor the songmakers - they are trying to put on a good show. If my little essay turned you off of Ateez then that's a failure of my writing and I am very sincerely sorry I put a damper on your good time with a band I really like a LOT.
To be more concise than my big long thing - there are personal (I repeat PERSONAL) reasons I don't like that song very much and what it says. What Ateez does as part of the entertainment they try to provide is be all the stuff boys and girls jointly think are fun and cool for boys to be - bikers, revolutionaries, anarchists, pirates, underground artists, cowboys, hackers, gamblers, boxers and fighters etc etc. One of the things they tried for with The Leaders song was just a major personal turn off for me. That's what I was trying to express.
All of Ateez songs probably further their very complicated multi dimensional lore so as I said in my post, there's probably some plot reason this song was written.
My critique is of the aesthetics of the song, not the individual performers who sing or perform the song. I hope that clears it up??

You know what i dont think ppl would read this properly BUT this mockup sketch was birthed from a ramble lol.
Here's to the very silly (turned somewhat /serious ???? idk) hypoethical what-if season 3 became a thing and there is the potential to have mizrak and olrox do it. This is all copy and pasted from a infodump I did in the Castlevania Creatives discord server, so its very informal and just me spouting out words
Tumblr media
The tone Olrox talks about the sun, the past, nature etc is very interesting to me because there's a "Longing. Desire. Love" for it. Yet, he's a vampire, he cannot truly be amongst it anymore BUT HE REALLY TRIES SO HARD, like compared to drolta, ezerbet or just a lot of vampires in castlevania in general, you don't really see them amongst nature DURING DAYLIGHT iirc. Him being in the shadows during day time is the closest thing he's going to get to being in the warmth of the sun.
Which do you know how else you get warm ✨INTIMACY✨
Which also like plays into a major factor of how he tries so hard to be human, and seeks that warmth in human lovers and turns them into vampires hoping to retain it. While we don't know about Olrox's previous lover, Mizrak was straight up dying, so imagine just Olrox carrying him the entire way there and just feeling him getting colder. Digressing though from intimacy and i wont say anything too nsfw but the idea of nudity, the "act" of it just being very human and longing for warmth and connection. Like in nocturne specifically (i wont go into s3 castlevania but it is there), it is initally starts with "omg THEYRE NAKED?", the entire convo is laced with wanting that warmth of and connection but they both have work to do lmao. My head is just SPINNING with vamprisim exploring sexuality and connection so bad like you wouldnt believe. Like the foundations are THERE because Mizrak has his whole complicated relationship with sexuality AND YOU COMBINE THAT WITH OLROX'S COMPLICATED RELATIONSHIP WITH SEXUALITY BUT FOR A WHOLE SET A DIFFERENT REASONS YET THEY BOTH COME BACK FOR THAT DESIRE TO CONNECT WITH PEOPLE? Again, this is so compelling to me, can you tell? I'm mentally front lines for if it ever EVER gets explored in a s3 because some really nice visual can be paired with it. Like since I already talked about like Olrox's yearning for nature and warmth, for like, 100% scenes would be censored BUT PLACING SOME NATURE STUFF OR SUN MOTIFS, OR LIKE JUST HAVING THE LIGHT cover stuff you can't show on netflix. So you can serve it as a nice technical reason for ratings BUT circle back for Olrox's need to look for things he's lost within human connection. Manifesting Season 3 mizrox going at it for the plot
Ok moving away from the intimacy talk so i can go more generally, this show definitely feels like vamprism seems to showcase how it can strip you from connections-- a very clear example being tera stripped from family ties (her palette is soooo cold now, like the warmer saturation of her skin and hair is GONE if we wanna talk about stripping warmth from her), and if we reallllllyyyy want to bring it back back, dracula, because he was cold before lisa, warm when lisa was there, then returned to being cold when lisa left.
Again apologises for any grammatical errors, mizrox intimacy scene has really decided to grab me by the skull for the past week
i also came out of watching wild robots yesterday so imaging the already preestablished purple and greens for olrox's colour association, YOU PUT THAT IN NIGHT MODE, then you shift that value into a more warm tone during the course of their one scene OR, you do that gradually over multiple scenes so you get gradual tone build up, to not only express that warmth olrox wants BUT it is so very feasible to push purple into a red tone because colour theory. Also red is mizrak's new colour association (that we know of)
anyways again, my insane moment here, i just think i would be cool because this is so out there, doubt this would ever happen BUT CONCEPT WISE, ITS COOL AND WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO EXECUTE SAID IDEA WHEN IM FREE HAHA (or… i might start chipping at it now… tempting its so tempting)
this is myst in the future uh I'm i don't think ill be executing it to its full capacity because it requires a lot more moving parts because if i want it to work the way i want to, it genuinely requires a whole season so i can do parallels and have it feel like it pays off. THOUGH I MAY BOARD IT COZ THE VISUAL IDEAS ARE FUN TO PLAY WITH AND THIS IS SUPPOSE TO BE NOT SERIOUS HAHAHA
okok to back up my point i wanted to bring up this layout because it was so pretty and i think about the cool parallels they could do because this is blue for richtette, and then having a purple ver for mizrox, parallels, parallels
(layout by kloysius!)
Tumblr media
ok that's the end of that discord ramble, and we're jumping to present Mystery!
So as you can tell the mockup colour wise goes VERY DIFFERENTLY, if not, almost opposite direction from the colour inspo. I realised from the get-go the red/yellow made is feel REALLY WARM and even with the purple like shadows, which have an association with mystical, cool- it still feels really hot in a way you're being smothered under the sun. Which that felt like the best way to go about it, if the idea is to go grounded, human and very feely. This completely contrasts how vampires are usually perceived yes, however it is a very very interesting but compelling way to communicate wanting a connection because you're building on top of that trope.
Also, this mizrox scene can absolutely be tied towards all the very pre-established themes of love, along with running in tandem to richer and annette (just very different approaches of love), along with also running in tandem to tera, however, showing the absence of love.
Again this is very silly, I just needed to shake out the creative brain worms because all the characters and their interweaving stories compel me, and how that is achieved visually is so interesting to me. As stated, the threads ARE THERE, just whatever is decided to be pulled (if any please s3 plsplspslpsls) has to correspond with what happens before and after any mizrak olrox scenes AND how it's role plays in the much grander narrative of nocturne. Again, this is all in good fun and i like thinking of hypotheticals <33333
Tumblr media Tumblr media
quick mockup for hypothetical mizrox scene
its a whole thing how vampirism strips them from being in the warmth of the sun so instead they try to find warmth by- (gets dragged away)

Can you make a tutorial on how you world build and make ocs? I can't seem to make any people in my brain, but then when I try to come up with environments jobs, beliefs and little details to slowly come up with someone, I think: well I don't really know how people have influenced the world- it's a weird loop
To be honest, I don't think I can! Writing is an extremely personal process. The way I write is directly related to how I process things, what I find important in stories, years of my own analysis of my and other's writing, etc... The way you write will be unique to you, as well. But I can explain how I personally think of it.
The short answer:
Write. Write anything and everything, it's a tool to explore your ideas. Analyze your own writing, and write more. Then, as you discover which ideas you want to develop, write more to explore them more. You won't know what you want otherwise!
The long answer:
I think this kind of loop is common. It's easy to feel like everything needs to be done "at once," because our job as writers is to make elements logically fit with each other for our readers. But as you've discovered, developing multiple elements simultaneously isn't really possible, or at least is extremely difficult.
Personally, when I think of writing, I break it into three major elements; characters, world, and plot. As much as possible every scene explores one or more of these, and as much as possible these three things tie back into what I personally consider most important: theme.
Everything I do is in service of the themes I want to present. Without them my events feel aimless. It can take a while to discover them, but they're the core of my work. You will have to discover what you feel is the core of yours. Analyzing other media helps with this too.
Concepts in your brain exist in a state of infinite potential. But when you start writing you have to start making choices, which removes potential as you move forward... But you have to move forward anyways. If there's ideas you want to explore later, you can always explore them later.
What this ends up meaning, to answer your question, is that I don't think of my characters as "people in my brain" or my worlds as something people have influenced... Not at their core, at least. They are tools that I use to represent specific ideas. Obviously they're also my blorbos, but mostly they're serving a specific narrative purpose.
So above all else... Write. Write, and discover what you're writing about, and then start over and write with that in mind. Keep doing this. But you have to write!
#I wish there were a cleaner answer to this kind of thing#and I also wish that there were a way to answer that didnt feel like 'just do it lol'#but... genuinely you kind of just have to do it!#I find it helps to reframe writing as trying to figure out which ideas I don't like#then if I write anything that feels bad to me#it's not about being a bad writer or anything like that. it's just something I dont want in my story and I delete it.#like if you find yourself naturally coming up with worldbuilding elements. its okay to just start there!#you can start like 'I really want giant mushrooms' and then start thinking about how cool that would be#and like oooh what if there were really cool caves full of mushrooms and all glowy yeaaah#then you start building people from that. colonies of fungal people or something. this is still worldbuilding#then you might think now. whats a plot that could go with this and show off my cool mushrooms.#maybe the mushrooms are all connected and the main one is dying and no one knows why. it's a classic plot.#if you still dont feel like you can find a character in that. keep going! why is it dying? how can it be saved? can it? if not then why?#etc etc etc. when I am writing I actually ltierally write out 101 questions like this as I'm going and then I answer them#and if I cant answer them. then I figure out a different situation that doesnt bring that question up LMFAO#eventually you can decide you want a hero who idfk will replace the big mushroom or something. a sacrifice and immortality simultaneously#then you can be like yeah so my themes are probably about sacrifice. connection to others. love for your community. stuff like that#and then you can go back to your world and say. yeah I think that people should have telepathic communication on some level!#I'm just making all this up right now but I just want to illustrate somehow how this kind of cyclical process can actually be a tool#because it's not about getting it all right at once. its about leaning into the cycle and how it guides you through developing these#anyways idk if this makes any sense. if this doesnt feel like it works for you then it probably literally doesnt#but writing more and analyzing writing more is ALWAYS good#it will never make your writing worse to do those things.#unfortunately (said with all the love in the world) writing is an endless process of learning more about who you are and what you care abou#its wonderful but it's hard and theres no way to skip that process#good luck!#asks#anon#writing stuff#oh also if at any point you go hm. that big thing isnt working for me I think...

One of the interesting bits of trying to resume working on the game after so long is looking back at my ancient Draft Placeholder versions of an image from 4 yrs ago trying to remember what the hell I meant back then, to hopefully interpret it into some more final (ish..) form of the same thing .. making slow progress lol
#At this point I've decided it's just a consistent design decision to have the sketchy slightly wonky sort of art ghbjj#I simply don't have the digital art skills/tools/patience (mostly that) to do 100% digital things and have a Clean Polished Professional#Neat Looking Perfect Crisp Lines sort of thing like one would see in most games. I'm drawing everything in pencil half decently (not strict#ly making sure every line is straight or that the perspective even makes sense) and then scanning it in and coloring it on the computer#and that's about it. In another world I could hire an artist or two to do professional backgrounds and charcter art or etc. - but as I am#a mere penniless peasant hermit with functioning issues who has to do every aspect of everything themselves - I'm just going to do#what is possible within the time frame/my ability/etc. and then just be like ''ah you see! actually this is intentional~ it has a homemade#crafty hand drawn sort of charm about it - yes? this was the direction all along!!'' LOL#Which for the record I'm not like complaining that it's necssarily Bad or anything - more just I suppose not the Professional Polished#style you Typically see in a lot of things - again the like - sketchy unclean lines of it all.#(like I think usually people use some sort of symmetry tool to make sure that all sides of a box are neat and clean and have that#Professional Game Art type of feel about them - rather than 'this is a scan of scraggily pencil lines in which I did not even bother to use#a ruler or try to get them all that even' lol). So it's not that it's BAD really.#just I think.. perhaps ''unconventional'' compared to the examples of other#games I've looked at. BUT. the point is to convey an idea. I think your art has failed if you do not convey a concept properly. But so#long as it meets your purposes and is not SOO cluttered/scribbly that nobody can even tell what's going on (unless that IS your intention)#then like.. I think it's fine. You can tell a house is a house even if it's not polished. No worries. (<convincing myself)#ANYWAY.. also 'Nanyevimi Market Quest' is still SUCH a placeholder name but I genuinely can never think of anything else so#I've just been going with it for now ToT... There's no distinct actual throughline story/plot so there's no 'theme' to base a title#around. Kind of like how 'The Sims' is just called the sims because naming it like 'Sims: Downfall Of Pleasantview' (one of the#towns in TS2 i think) would be a weird misname since what happens in the game totally depends on what you choose to do with it#So you can't really name it anything THAT specific (a player might not even choose to have a house in Pleasantview. what then? etc).#So it's just like..uh well...GENERALLY speaking.. everyone is uh.. on a personal quest..vaguely.. which takes place in a Market street full#of shops.. and you are mostly talking to shopkeepers... BUT it's not just a Market Quest since it's also in a fantasy world.. so we need to#give the fantasy world name.. and that's about it. I'm just at a loss for anything else. Maybe the like 2 and a half playtesters I#manage to scrounge up will have better ideas ghhh.. 'Nanyevimi Quest: Get To Know Some Shopkeepers' 'Find A Job In Fantasy World' you could#say 'Market Adventure' but some would argue just having a bunch of conversations and wandering around is not much of a real adventure.#don't want to set people up for thinking there's any drama or combat or anything. 'Do Menial Errands For Mentally Ill Elves Simulator' ghjg#(also sidenote: the '''chibi'' style versions of the characters on the menu screen....EVIL.. that style is SOOO hard for me to draw in for#some reason.. I just can't get the proportions right/have trouble fully ''simplifying'' the design.. took me HOURS lol... aUGHh)

i've said it before and I'll say it again: if you consider literally any millisecond of content from any sneak peaks or trailers to be spoilers that you don't want to see it's your responsibility to excuse yourself from participating in online fandom spaces. you look fucking ridiculous being extremely active in the da fandom and then crying that people aren't "tagging spoilers" when the spoiler in question is like. a completely out of context screenshot or a single line of dialogue

I think that making old DJ Octavio balding is a beautiful and noble cause and I'd generally agree but. the vision in my mind is that he has not been able to switch forms for the last 100 years, as is canon, and it's only recently (and probably with the combination of Underground Octo Tech with the Surface's abundance of resources) that there have been the medical advancements to make it possible again. And I think that if after 100 years Octavio got his octoling form back only to realize he was balding I think that would just be the final straw for him he would just snap.
But in a universe where he never lost the ability to change forms I think he'd be chill with it.
#prince talks#something about watching himself grow old and being able to make peace with and enjoy it#vs feeling like he's had the last hundred years stolen from him and he's gone from point a to point c with no in between#<-guy has some internalized problems#I think Octavio would like the ability to switch forms again. but if anyone offered anything beyond that he'd get mad about it#He LIKES his cool hi tech mobility devices. thank you very much.#Also while I think DJ Octavio specifically would want his octo form back I am also certain there are inkfish who are#perma swim form (or perma octoling/inkling form!) who would. Not want this. even with the option available.#content with living their lives as they are#my final related thought is that I think Octavio was technically happiest for a short time in his 20s#but if ever some freak 'cuttletavio get de-aged!' plot happened to him I don't think he'd want to be in his 20s again#(and he would hate it even more if he was 18 or 19)#I think he'd rather be in his respectable late 30s or 40s. Or species equivalent.#how the fuck do inkfish even age man. Craig and Octavio imply interesting things about their lifespan#but also supposedly they are weird exceptions living way out beyond even normal inkfish ranges.#the ONLY people left alive from the great turf war#which I just. I don't know if I can believe that. when they're 130+ acting like they're 80 or whatever#actual final thoughts: please. Octavio being old is more important than trying to make him sexy. he can be old and sexy too#and if you make him fat when he is old then don't be a coward and make his baby days self fat too. This is my wisdom#he can be old and fat and sexy. thank you.

The way some people are reacting to the Oscar nominations, specifically in regards towards Barbie, and many other things surrounding it holds certain undertones, especially when they then start to go and deny America Ferrera's talent among other things, that are very concerning. Like let's not do that. Especially if you're writing an article for a newspaper (LA Times) that makes digs towards the other films and their nominees, mainly who were women, and say that that proves the point of Barbie. Even though the point of the film was that women have to work harder than men just to get their foot in the door, not about shaming other women, but I digress.
#oscars#barbie (2023)#barbie movie#america ferrera#like from the way some people are talking you would think that the film didn't get nominated for anything#don't even get me started on that la times article that was dismissing the themes of killers of the flower moon either#that was not just some murder plot it was a genocide#but i also can't expect these certain types of people to get that when they act like their fave not getting nominated is an act against#feminism even though many other women (woc mainly) were nominated#but adding to the fact that women and young girls in palestine congo & sudan ate facing many forms of violence & discrimination#and yet said people haven't been up in arms about that (and you know why)#if this doesn't apply to you than it doesn't but if it does dni if you can't be calm about in this discussion#you can wish that greta & margo got nominations all you want#but pls don't get upset when others (especially poc) talk about how concerning some of the rhetoric around this conversation is concerning#also congrats to america ferra (and coleman domingo) for their nominations!#and to lily gladstone for being the first native person of native descent in the us to be nominated#as well as to all the people of color who were nominated bc often times fields like these don't give you (us) a chance to be recognized#like how are you going to watch barbie and then make digs towards other films (one with a woc who talked about the many complex feelings#derived from/during the film and the other created by a woman that was snubbed by her own gov bc they didn't like how she called them out)#and say that you understood the message behind the film? that is not-#also didn't margo help produce barbie? and isn't nominated for best picture? so she is being acknowledged not forgotten#(also bc tumblr won't let me correct my tags without deleting them completely when referring to palestine and etc#i meant to say are and not ate but my fingers were moving too fast so sorry for that and just want to clear that up)

oh i'm sorry, i didn't realize we were taking moral standing points from the asura now. y'know. the race that full-hog experimented and ripped apart sylvari even after knowing they were wholly sapient beings (and it wasn't even inquest! it was regular fucking asura! the arcane council most definitely okayed those experiments! never mind the fact that the council TO THIS DAY fucking openly allows inquest to do as they please so long as they don't cause trouble in rata sum) and have done little to nothing to apologize for that fact to their sylvari allies.
but no, you're right, the humans are the worst race in tyria just by way of existing and trying to find a place for themselves. how could i have ever thought different?
#from beyond the grave#hi i'm going to go fucking feral#I'M NOT EVEN A HUGE HUMAN FAN. i have them and i love the ones i do have! but i greatly prefer sylvari as my playable race.#what the FUCK are you talking about#“did everything they can to push other people off their land” are you talking about pushing charr out???? cus uh.#i don't know how to tell you this but the charr STOLE THAT LAND IN THE FIRST PLACE EVEN BEFORE HUMANS#dont even get me started on their HoT take (the One Expansion that anet gave sylvari before forgetting they exist)#and the icebrood one (the charr should have never been the fucking main focus of the goddamn NORN PLOT ANYWAYS)#the “human interference” in icebrood was literally a fucking BLIP amongst the bullshit of the charr getting involved#don't even fucking talk to me about “humans being lynchpins” for icebrood. it should have had NOTHING but NORN LORE.#it was the NORN PLOT. jormag had always been NORN STORY AND PLOT.#“buhbuhbuh humans” I DON'T GIVE A SHIT. THE CHARR SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN THERE EITHER#it's extremely telling that you don't care that the charr shouldn't have been there either#and only focused on the .0000000000003 seconds that kas helped in anything related to the plot#while also framing crecia and rytlock's relationship problems throughout as “human-looking” squabbling#god forbid rytlock get some character development where he WANTS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for his kid#(even tho it should've happened in a charr-centric story thread and NOT THE FUCKING NORN ONE ANET)#and every charr in the world is like “but why do you care??” because charr society is so incredibly FUCKED re: their kids#“being attentive to the story” my fucking ass. just say you fucking hate humans as a race and move the fuck on.#i didn't mean to rant this much in the tags but the more i stared at the post the more i felt like biting someone#OH. OH SORRY. i just noticed that#the person was like “lol inquest figured out how to harness elder dragon energy before xunlai <3”#JUHGTFJHKDFJHGLKFD ??????#okay for one the inquest are a bunch of literal rat bastards who caused a NUCLEAR REACTOR EXPLOSION in metrica#i'm not going to trust a fucking inquest ANYWHERE NEAR ME let alone praise them for “ethical” dragon energy#the “uhm ACKSUALLY S W E A T Y” tone of voice re: canthan tech vs. asuran is asinine and also annoying as fuck#“all of PoF was about humans :(” IT IS LITERALLY. ABOUT A HUMAN GOD? IT IS *THE* HUMAN XPAC.#IT WAS NOT A SURPRISE FOR IT TO BE HUMAN THEMED? WE KNOW ELONA IS H U M A N S ?#yet again. what the FUCK are you even talking about.#OKAY. jesus christ. i think i'm finally done bitching about this.
