I think that making old DJ Octavio balding is a beautiful and noble cause and I'd generally agree but. the vision in my mind is that he has not been able to switch forms for the last 100 years, as is canon, and it's only recently (and probably with the combination of Underground Octo Tech with the Surface's abundance of resources) that there have been the medical advancements to make it possible again. And I think that if after 100 years Octavio got his octoling form back only to realize he was balding I think that would just be the final straw for him he would just snap.
But in a universe where he never lost the ability to change forms I think he'd be chill with it.
#prince talks#something about watching himself grow old and being able to make peace with and enjoy it#vs feeling like he's had the last hundred years stolen from him and he's gone from point a to point c with no in between#<-guy has some internalized problems#I think Octavio would like the ability to switch forms again. but if anyone offered anything beyond that he'd get mad about it#He LIKES his cool hi tech mobility devices. thank you very much.#Also while I think DJ Octavio specifically would want his octo form back I am also certain there are inkfish who are#perma swim form (or perma octoling/inkling form!) who would. Not want this. even with the option available.#content with living their lives as they are#my final related thought is that I think Octavio was technically happiest for a short time in his 20s#but if ever some freak 'cuttletavio get de-aged!' plot happened to him I don't think he'd want to be in his 20s again#(and he would hate it even more if he was 18 or 19)#I think he'd rather be in his respectable late 30s or 40s. Or species equivalent.#how the fuck do inkfish even age man. Craig and Octavio imply interesting things about their lifespan#but also supposedly they are weird exceptions living way out beyond even normal inkfish ranges.#the ONLY people left alive from the great turf war#which I just. I don't know if I can believe that. when they're 130+ acting like they're 80 or whatever#actual final thoughts: please. Octavio being old is more important than trying to make him sexy. he can be old and sexy too#and if you make him fat when he is old then don't be a coward and make his baby days self fat too. This is my wisdom#he can be old and fat and sexy. thank you.

with Christmas season approaching, what kind of 'Hallmark movie premise' would you see for Haruhi x the hosts??? bc everytime I see 'city lawyer woman and small town woodsman who teaches her about the magic of Christmas' I think Mori x Haruhi and like. Disney level animal sidekicks of Mori's raccoon and chick lol. Hope your halloween went well btw and ty for the video series!!! You have the prettiest brown eyes btw ^^
This is the cutest idea and I want a fan-fiction series of these hallmark stories 😭 Also thank you so much, I'm so glad you enjoyed the videos! I was very disheartened because they flopped on TikTok but I still had fun making them ☺️.
Haruhi x Takashi:
I can definitely see their story being a "city lawyer woman meets rugged yet shy woodsman". I can even see Takashi being a school teacher in this scenario. Maybe he still lives in the woods because he enjoys his privacy but from 7-3 he teaches history at the high school.
Now, I want to say their situation would be the classic "there are no hotel rooms available in this small town" and Haruhi so happens to meet Takashi at the only has station. He overhears her asking where she can stay the night and he knows she won't find a place at this time of night so he walks over and offers the small guest cabin on his property. He explains that's where his cousin stays when he comes to visit but she can stay there as long as she needs to.
Also, when Haruhi goes to the high school to talk to Takashi about the case she's working on his students ooh and awe at the hottie standing in the hallway and when he walks back inside they're all snickering that he has a secret girlfriend. He doesn't correct them, just tells them to turn to page 30 in their textbooks.
She offers to make them dinner as her way of thanking him for his generosity. They eat together almost every night. At first they talk about the case - or what Haruhi can disclose - and the town's history, but after a while they start talking about their lives, their families, their goals and dreams. Soon their light chatter isn't just friendly conversation anymore.
Takashi looks forward to seeing her after work and Haruhi finds a strange peace in living in the quiet wood. Then one night they're sitting outside under the stars with a cup of coffee and Takashi gathers the courage to ask if she has to leave when the case is done... or if she could stay with him.
Haruhi x Kyoya:
Hear me out; small town girl living in the big city to pursue her dream of becoming a lawyer meets cocky businessman who is visiting to scope out a coffee shop. He wants to buy it so he can turn it into an office for the Ootori Group so they'll have grounds in the city. It also so happens to be Haruhi's favorite coffee shop.
They meet by accident one morning but it's not the classic meet-cute scenario. Haruhi sits down with her cup by the window and Kyoya approaches her with a tablet in one hand and a tea in the other. He asks to sit with her since the place is packed and the only seat available is right in front of her. She says yes and for a while they sit in silence until Haruhi asks what he's working on. He states it's rude to pry on other's business. Haruhi says she can see him designing a building blueprint on his tablet and it looked cool. Kyoya adjusts his glasses and asks if the people here are always this nosey. Haruhi gets insulted. Kyoya doesn't care since the coffee shop will hopefully be gone by the end of the month and leaves.
They continue meeting each other nearly every day at the coffee shop. Their backhanded insults slowly turn into sarcastic flirting. Soon Kyoya and Haruhi are caught in the rain and he offers her a ride to her apartment. In the car he opens up about his life, confessing that his father is the one who is making him do this. If he can establish the Ootori Group in this city it'll help prove himself. Haruhi considers this and asks if that's really what he wants, if he really wants to take over the family business or if that's just another thing his father is making him do. Kyoya stays awake that night, unable to sleep because of that question.
The next day he texts his father and informs him the coffee shop isn't a good location for their office. His father is disappointed and makes a sly comment of asking one of his brothers to finish the task Kyoya couldn't do on his own.
That was what made Kyoya realize - he didn't want to work beneath this tyrant forever. He didn't want a life ruled by his father.
Kyoya returns to the coffee shop and sees Haruhi sitting in their usual spot. With a smile and a newfound goal, he approaches her with a tablet in one hand and a tea in the other.
Haruhi x Tamaki:
Why did I first think of Elf 🤣. In all seriousness, I think Tamaki would be the one hoping to fill Haruhi with Christmas cheer. I can see Haruhi working at a law firm but not as a lawyer, maybe as the receptionist, and she's all business. She has goals and she's intent on climbing the ladder to her own office. Tamaki is a new intern at the firm, hired during the Holidays since the Christmas season is usually the busiest time of year for the firm. Tamaki instantly takes a liking to Haruhi and stops by her desk every morning for a hello and a smile.
Soon he's bringing her a cup of coffee. Peppermint, mocha, salty caramel, whatever sweet seasonal flavors the area has to offer. He just wants to see her smile. One day she does.
Tamaki asks her out on a date which she declines but after five more attempts she says yes and meets him at a casual restaurant a few blocks from the firm.
Haruhi opens up and confesses Christmas is a hard time for her since losing her mother. Tamaki becomes solemn and says he can relate with her, that he too misses his mother during the holidays. Haruhi avoids the holidays while Tamaki embraces them - for the same reason.
With this new bondship they unknowingly become closer.
Tamaki still tries to get Haruhi into the Christmas mood but giving her small treats every morning and she complains he's going to make her fat but he only laughs it off.
Then the firm closes for the Christmas weekend and Haruhi is sitting in her apartment alone. No Christmas tree, no Christmas lights, not even a Santa mug... But she sees the pumpkin spiced muffin on her kitchen counter from that morning and decides...
She calls Tamaki and asks to spend Christmas with him.
Haruhi x Hikaru:
Ok hear me out; Haruhi is a lawyer with her own office on the top floor and Hikaru is the computer tech who is charged with teaching her how to use the new technology the firm just adopted. He has to teach her how to use the new tablets, presentation screens, and mobile devices. Haruhi wishes they would have left things as they are but she has no choice. Time to adapt.
With all the time they spend together they begin talking - then they talk over coffee - then they talk over dinner. At first Haruhi tells herself she's just making a new friend, that her busy work schedule doesn't allow for romance, that they can't be more than friends. She's been putting off relationships for so long so she could focus on her work. Surely Hikaru would understand.
He doesn't. Within a month's time his work there is done. He's installed all the new technology into her office, taught her how to use it, and left the manuals on her desk - along with a note explaining his feelings.
Haruhi realizes she loves him just as he's walking out of building and for the first time since working at the firm Haruhi is seen running down the stairs.
Haruhi x Kaoru:
Obviously Kaoru has to be a fashion designer. I'd say Haruhi is a small town girl going to a community college when Kaoru stumbles into town. She's going to get her associates there before moving onto a big-name college in the city for the rest of her law degree. Kaoru is just supposed to be passing through on his way to a convention.
He gets caught in a blizzard and ends up at Haruhi's front door. Thankfully she's able to live on her own in a one bedroom apartment so Kaoru takes the couch for the night. It all happens so fast they don't even have an introduction until morning.
Over coffee Kaoru introduces himself as a rising fashion designer and how he's supposed to be at a convention by the next day for fresh and upcoming trends. Haruhi sadly tells him it'll take a week for the plowers to reach her street. He's stuck there.
Kaoru, bored out of his mind, goes through Haruhi's closet and tosses her bland clothing on the bed. He promises to renovate her wardrobe when he gets the chance to which Haruhi refuses. She doesn't need to look like a rich snob. Kaoru reminds her law school will demand a sense of fashion, even if it's just business suits. Name brands have a voice in the world in the law.
During their time together Haruhi and Kaoru realize they get along very well. During the week stuck inside they sit by the floor heater with their instant hot chocolates and joke that it beats a roaring fire.
Soon the blizzard stops and the roads are plowed within 9 days time. Kaoru already missed the convention and he's very disappointed but he's still hesitant to leave. He asks Haruhi when she'll obtain her associates degree. She says by spring. Kaoru smiles and tells her to live with him when she goes to college in the city. He had a spacious three bedroom apartment on the skirt of the city - with a walk in closet.
Haruhi x Mitsukuni:
Forgive me but I can't think of a scenario where Mitsukuni isn't an elf in disguise 🤣. It's the perfect job for him; he'd be surrounded by sweets and toys all day. Maybe he has to act as Haruhi's Christmas guardian. He has to help her fall in love with Christmas again.
They don't fall in love... I can just see them becoming good friends. Maybe Mitsukuni gives her a snow globe of the North Pole and says that's where he'll be if she ever needs him again.

AN: Here’s chapter three!
Title: The Ripple Effect
Characters: Hordak, Entrapta, Odessa, features others including OCs
Pairing: Entrapdak
Rating: M
Read on AO3.
                                                        Tower
Odessa has her gear prepped to go. Extravehicular Mobility Units were not used too often anymore, however, Entrapta and Hordak took extra precautions with the EMUs, and have even modified Tristan’s and Hydrangea’s spacesuits as well, to account for their height, weight, and metabolic rate. Darla had been upgraded continuously throughout the years, but has since been retired for this mission. Which didn’t bother Odessa in the slightest, as her parents believed she should have a ship of her own.
Celeste sits in the hangar, a cavern that had been excavated to accommodate for the growing number of people that now resided on Beast Island. The chatter of pookas echo through the vicinity. Her uncles had learned to live on the island, and that included taming some of the beasts that resided here. Pookas were not too dissimilar from the usual pet once their behavior was understood. She notes a few resting on Celeste’s roof, chittering at her as she walks beneath them. Odessa glides her fingers along the metallic surface, “Hey, it’s been a while since I used you.”
The ship whirs on, responsive to touch, but only from the genetic makeup of those that have been programmed into her system. Her parents, her siblings, Tristan and Hydrangea, and herself, are the ones that have been given permission to access her ship. However, it’s meant to be hers and no one else’s.
“This is so exciting!” Entrapta shouts. Hordak strides over, Entrapta shuffling beside him on her hair. Her father lugs heavy equipment bags with ease. Settling them on the ground, Entrapta beams at the two of them, “I wonder what our baby will find on the flagship!”
“It may be overrun with vegetation,” Hordak says. “None of us have bothered to go to it since the war.”
“There were collections of weapons and tech on the flagship as well that might be useful,” Entrapta says. She turns to Odessa, handing her a communicator. “I hacked into the mainframe of the ship and managed to give you a map of it, using old data from my past devices to navigate it. This one should be better, and I also updated its ability to detect heat signatures.”
Odessa looks at the screen, before smiling at her mother, “Thanks, Mom. This is going to be helpful. But, did none of you ever check the ship once Adora helped to defeat Prime?”
Hordak’s ears flick down for a moment, “It was no longer a concern, at the time. We only regrouped the rest of my brothers that had been left aboard. And when your mother and I had gotten closer to finishing up the repairs for Beast Island, turning the Fright Zone into New Chelicerata, and aiding everywhere else, we had not believed it necessary to investigate it further. There simply was no purpose to a flagship that was decimated of its original functions.”
Odessa nods, “It makes sense that it wouldn't work any longer. It’s hard to do that when a large amount of trees are protruding out of it.”
“With that, the atmosphere is not safe to breathe, of course,” Entrapta adds. “I have ensured that your oxygen tanks will last for nine hours—an improvement from the usual amount!—but you should be cautious, regardless of how confident you are that the tanks will not deplete their air supply too fast.”
Hordak opens the hatch, walking into the ship. He places all the equipment down, hooking the bags onto steel clasps. He points to weapons that he lines up along the wall, pressing a button for them to stick to magnetically, “Should you need any of them, they’re here.”
“Thanks, Dad,” Odessa replies. Walking up to him, she grins, resembling her mother, “I think we’ll be fine, but it’s good to be prepared, right?”
Hordak smiles at her, patting the top of her head, smoothing back her hair. Affectionately, Odessa pushes her head up into his palm, the way she used to as a child.
“I know we said we’d only be here for six weeks, but I do appreciate being allowed to pursue this,” she tells him.
“Your mother and I wouldn’t discourage you from curiosity,” Hordak replies.
Odessa beams up at him, shaking with excitement.
Her friends arrive ten minutes later, on time. They know how punctual Odessa and her family are, and after making her wait once, they learned to not do it again.
Entrapta, excited, bounds over to them, “Look! I upgraded your suits!”
“Ooh, cool!” Tristan says, holding up his. “I love the sheen going on.”
“I thought you might!”
Hydrangea grins at her, “Ooh, you changed up the texture for my fingers!”
“I even added these new features where you can get a snack and drink if you need it,” Entrapta tells them, explaining how to access it. Tristan and Hydrangea clap at her innovative features, thankful at her thoughtfulness.
Hordak, pleased at their display of gratitude, walks over to them, “In case of emergency, we have extra suits tucked away in the hatch, in addition to oxygen tanks stacked in storage. The distance is not far, but we made sure that you will all be comfortable on your journey to the flagship.”
“Thank you—both of you,” Hydrangea says. Entrapta hugs her tight, mimicking Scorpia surprisingly well.
Hordak pats Tristan’s shoulder, “The three of you be mindful. We will be on the communicator whenever one of you is in trouble, and we will send a portal your way.”
“Yes sir,” Tristan says. “We wouldn’t put Odessa in danger.”
Hordak smiles, touched, “I know you wouldn’t.”
                                                                 -
Odessa always feels at home in space.
The endless darkness, speckled with shining stars, leaves her breathless each time. Space is too amazing to leave unexplored. There’s so much left to find out there.
She turns to her friends, “It won’t be long now. The flagship went further away, but thankfully it remains reachable.”
Hydrangea flips back her hair, “Des, do you believe we’ll find anything? The flagship had been overrun with plants, and I’m quite sure it had grown.”
“I don’t doubt there’s an abundance of it,” Odessa replies. She grins at her, “But that’s where your powers come in.”
Tristan zips up Hydrangea’s spacesuit, lifting her hair, “We’ll need to make sure there aren’t any living organisms on it. That thing’s been floating around Etheria for two whole decades. It’s likely made itself home to another alien creature by now.”
Odessa holds out her pad, “Whatever is on there will show up on the monitor. But, frankly, we shouldn’t find much else except for whatever bodies were left behind.”
Hydrangea walks over to the window, looking out. She hasn’t been up here for a good few years. There are shimmering sights beyond where they are, and she wonders if they’ll find what Odessa is looking for. Her friend has a determination that knows no bounds, but she doesn’t want to risk that there’s a chance she might not succeed. Although, she should give Odessa more credit. If an experiment or hypothesis proves incorrect, she is the sort to accept that it isn’t possible and move on to the next project. Hydrangea glances at Odessa, red eyes fixated on the pad, brows knitted together as she maps out the best course to head in.
Smiling, Hydrangea touches her shoulder, “You’re excited.”
Odessa grins at her, “Of course! It’s been a long time coming since you, Tris and I were on an adventure together.”
Tristan leans against the wall, “Hopefully, this won’t turn into a mess like last time.”
“Last time we were younger—inexperienced and kind of dumb,” Odessa answers. “We are perfectly equipped this time around. We’re not going to be reckless when we land.”
Hydrangea giggles, “You have to admit, the mess made it a little more exciting. And even then, we didn’t get into too much trouble. We just got lost.”
Odessa looks at Tristan, “Besides, why are you worried? You winged it when we were on R-175. You were more than fine.”
“Just because I know how to improvise doesn’t mean I’d like to do it again. I’d like to take it easy,” he replies. Moving over to them, he smiles, “I’d rather not play babysitter to the two of you.”
“Ooh, what an adult!” Odessa says, squishing her cheeks together. She then folds her arms, smirking, “This is coming from the guy who sulked at not having the last bowl of ice cream.”
“Uh, I called dibs and you swiped it, right under my nose. Yeah, I was gonna be a little upset.”
“Doesn’t help your case, Tris. Honestly, you’re not much older than Des and I,” Hydrangea says.
“Yet I know that if something goes wrong, I’ll probably get more shit for it. ‘You’re almost 18! This is on you!’” Tristan mocks, wagging a finger. He crosses his arms, “Like the two of you can't make up your own minds.”
“Don’t worry your pretty little head,” Odessa replies, pointing to the communicator. “You know my parents never discouraged us from exploring, and they do know we’re all capable of making our own decisions. I’m leading this expedition, so if anything does happen, it’s on me.”
Hydrangea leans over to check the monitor. She looks at Odessa, “Do you know where we’ll be landing on the Velvet Glove?”
Tristan snickers, “That name I swear…”
Shaking her head, Hydrangea feigns a sigh, "So sad. I wonder if he compensated for something.”
“Do you think that’s what he called his dick?”
“No, that’s the name of Horde Prime brand condoms,” Odessa says. “His dick was probably something like ‘The Illustrious Rod of Justice.’”
Giggling, Hydrangea adds, “He did go around ‘impregnating’ hundreds of galaxies. That guy had a loooot of repressed sexual feelings, I think.”
“Yeah, like, he did and didn’t?” Tristan says. “He was bizarre. He got boners over rules and oppressed people with his holier-than-thou morality.”
“Seriously. Did he have shitty parents that couldn’t go ‘hey son, maybe bullying people into following your rigid, black and white laws is pretty messed up’ or what?”
“Well, whatever he was,” Odessa says, looking out the window, “Prime’s remnants are still in the Velvet Glove. His, hopefully, very much intact and preserved genetic material.”
“Des, that sounded so wrong!” Hydrangea laughs.
Tristan makes jerking off motions and makes a ‘sploosh’ sound.
Odessa grins at them, turning back to the monitor, “But to answer your question, my father informed me of an open bay area that should still be functioning. We’ll dock there.”
Tristan bends down, voice low, “By the way, we’re all aware of the two red dots above us, right?”
Odessa whispers, “Yes, it’s been there for a while. But I didn’t want to alert anything to make sure we could sneak up on it.”
Hydrangea nods, “How should we proceed?”
“Gea, leave for the main corridor. Send an electric shock through the air duct to incapacitate, not kill the intruders or damage Celeste. Tris, you stay to the side and be alert in case that doesn’t knock it out—take my spear from me. I’ll stand here to look vulnerable. Countdown now to 120 seconds.”
Tristan removes her weapon without trouble. Hydrangea walks out of the cockpit, the doors whooshing open and closed. Glancing over his shoulder, Tristan meets Odessa’s eyes.
Suddenly, sparks of electricity crackle into the vent. Cries of shock reverberate through the duct, followed by loud banging as something hurries along within. Odessa narrows her eyes as Tristan rushes toward her, both stances offensive.
From the opening, two bodies fall down in front of them. Electricity fluffs up tufts of fur, as Adam and Molly look up at them.
Hydrangea bolts back inside, “Hey, what came fr— Oh!”
The three look down at two of the quadruplets.
Adam grins, lightning coursing over his whiskers, “What’s up, everyone! Fuck Prime, am I right?”
Molly groans, thunking her forehead onto the floor.
                                                              -
“I am so, so, so sorry!” Hydrangea says again, handing Molly and Adam packets of food. “I do hope the shock wasn’t too much.”
Adam waves a hand, “Nah, we’re fine, aren’t we?”
Molly sighs, wishing she was anywhere else.
Tristan kneels down in front of her, “Why didn’t you tell us you were here?”
At Molly's silence, Adam grins, scratching his cheek, “Weeeeell, you see, I thought it would be fun if we came to visit. I saw Odessa’s ship, thought, ‘Hey, that seems cool!’ so I got in—”
“—I tried to stop him.” Molly adds, giving a small glare to the floor. “But he was climbing in anyway—”
“And ta-daaaa, we’re here! In space,” Adam finishes. “It was really nothing more than the lust for adventure.”
“That was very dangerous,” Hydrangea scolds, placing a hand on her forehead. “We could’ve killed you by accident.”
“Now it will be on purpose,” Odessa hisses, stalking toward them. “You two fools could’ve endangered your lives, that of my crew, and neither of you have experience in space travel. You are liabilities that may impede our progress.”
“Odessa,” Tristan begins. “Your parents provided us with extra supplies. It’ll be okay.”
“I have to agree with Odessa,” Hydrangea says, staring at Adam and Molly. “What the two of you did was irresponsible.”
Molly remains mute, looking away.
Adam stands up, “Hold on, we'll be okay keeping up with the three of you.”
“That’s not the point,” Odessa snarls, hair slightly curling. “I don’t even know how you snuck inside Celeste, much less evaded detection for almost three days.”
“See? We’re very quiet! You didn’t even notice us until now. I think we’ve proven our capability to you,” Adam insists.
Arms in a placating position, Tristan remarks, “I think we need to take time to reflect on the next course of action. Adam, why don’t you and Molly go wait in one of the rooms?”
“Aww, that’s no fun,” Adam says, irritated.
“If it’s fun you want, I’m more than willing to tear it into you,” Odessa threatens.
“Yeesh! Okay, okay, I’m going,” Adam complains. But he exits the cockpit to enter a room down the hall.
Tristan stretches out a hand to Molly. She looks at it for a moment before taking it in hers. Guiding her to the door, Tristan nods at Molly, who gives him a small smile.
Once gone, Odessa says aloud, “Celeste, lock the two of them in their quarters.”
“Affirmative,” the ship answers.
Hydrangea sighs, claws rubbing her temples, “I have to admit, this isn’t the sort of conflict I was expecting immediately.”
Tristan returns Odessa’s staff to her, “Perhaps we should consider allowing them to tag along.”
Frowning, Odessa glares out the window. Arms folded, she shakes her head, “I would prefer not.”
“It may serve better to deal with them directly,” Tristan says. “I doubt you would want to allow Adam free rein of Celeste.”
“Ooh, yeah, that would not be good,” Hydrangea agrees.
Growling deep in her chest, Odessa throws her hands up in the air, “Fine! Fine, but if they step one toe out of line, I’m leaving them on the flagship. Don’t think I won’t!”
“Got it,” they say together, very aware she’s serious.
                                                            -
Reaching their destination, Celeste is docked. Odessa steps out onto the flagship, staring around at the expanse of white and grey. Once sleek walls have indeed been overgrown by flora—vines weaving through its corpse, leaves scraping its sides. There’s no oxygen in space, but they were correct to assume it’s only grown. The plants were called forth by She-Ra, and seem to contain a magical property that prevents them from wilting in zero gravity.
Odessa collects a sample in a small test tube. Plugging it closed, she says, “No one touch anything. The flagship isn’t moving, but there’s no certainty that Prime had not built back-up systems into it. Should one of you find something of merit, call me over.”
Adam pumps his fists, “Whoo-hoo! Let’s go exploring!”
Rolling her eyes, she turns around to face him, “Adam. Look at me. Are you looking? Look at me. Do. Not. Touch. Anything.”
“You just told everyone that,” Adam replies.
“Yes, but I have to make direct eye contact with you to ensure that you will, indeed, in the back of your brain, not touch anything.”
“Relaaaax,” Adam says, wrapping his arm around her, ignoring her scathing leer. “You’re talking to the King of Cool. I’m not going to mess anything up.”
“You better not,” Odessa threatens before stalking away. Not peering over her shoulder, she adds, “Tris, take Molly. Gea, take Adam.”
Pulling out her own pad—quickly modified by Odessa due to unwanted company—Hydrangea smiles at him, “Let’s go see what’s around, hm? I think heading east leads upwards to the elevators.”
“Sounds fun!” Adam says, breaking into a sprint. “I’ll race you!”
“Adam, that leads to the supply closets!” Hydrangea yells, running after him.
Tristan looks down at Molly, “Why don’t we go west, then?”
“Yeah, um, that sounds okay…” she whispers, feeling cramped in the EMU.
He smiles at her, unsure of what to talk about. Settling on silence, they walk in the opposite direction.
                                                            -
Hydrangea catches up with Adam, “Hey! You can’t go wandering off like that.”
Adam grins, “I know where I’m going. I have an excellent sense of direction.”
Shaking her head, Hydrangea walks alongside him, “Alright, but I think following the map will yield better results. This mission is very significant to Odessa, and we should make an effort to find what she needs.”
He glances at her, “What exactly are we looking for?”
“Pardon?”
Shrugging, Adam says, “She didn’t specify what she needed, so how can we put in any effort for things we’re unsure of?”
“Honestly, none of us are too sure of what we may find here. The flagship has been abandoned for so long, whatever may have been here might not even hold up anymore.”
“If I was her, I’d go scout for any leftover weapons.”
“Why’s that?”
“They wouldn’t be of any use floating around in the nether regions of space. Wouldn’t her family want them?”
“Her family would not,” Hydrangea states. There have been no wars, no battles, no unrest on Etheria since the Horde invasion came about. She knows that Odessa’s father and uncles have done their best to make reparations for past injustices towards her people, and what she is aware of is bringing back weaponry may instill fear and distrust again.
It had not been easy the first few years—the first decade—since Hordak and his brothers made a genuine attempt to make Etheria their home. Etherians, understandably, had very little faith and charity towards the Horde clones. Glimmer, Bow, and Adora vouched that things will change between the two factions of race. Adora assured the people that Prime’s defeat would bring a new dawn for them all, and Catra, having been Hordak’s very own second-in-command, stepped forward to aid him in making peace with the Etherians. For it did not matter that she was She-Ra’s lover. She, too, had caused destruction. Had tormented and ravaged Etheria, and even admitted that she was the mastermind behind the majority of attacks, much to Hordak’s chagrin. There were many villages who remembered her for that.
The idea of bringing Horde weapons onto Etheria would have consequences. The years go by, and she knows plenty of Etherians who welcomed them eventually. As of now, it’s nearly the majority. They have integrated into Etherian society remarkably well. Known in their respective communities, Talon and Hordak are two, in particular, that chose partners who were as equally recognized for their achievements in the realms of magic and science, respectfully. She knew Entrapta had not been accepted prior to the war, and had to prove herself after. Nyxia, from what she’d been told, had raised several eyebrows for taking a Horde clone as her husband, though no one commented on it. To her face, at least.
Hydrangea comprehends the value of peace. The lack of war was not the issue, for dissent can be riled without impending doom. Civil unrest depends on power structures. Everything continues to hinge on the belief that harm is not what the Horde desires.
She holds up the pad, showing Adam a different route, “We can go to another room. You can even pick.”
“Fucking awesome,” Adam says, pointing to another hallway.
                                                            -
Tristan continues along through the hallway, minding his business.
Molly does the same, but with an inclination toward anxiety, her thoughts bounce back and forth between not caring that he’s here, and wondering how anyone can stand her being here. Adam had to go and sneak into the cargo hold. Adam had to drag her along by grabbing her against her will and making her jump in. Adam had to insist on climbing into the vents instead of saying they were onboard, wound up electrocuted, and got Odessa mad at them.
Odessa isn’t a person she knows too well, but Molly would prefer not being viewed as a pest by the one leading them into unknown territory. She wouldn’t blame Odessa if she did abandon them on this empty hunk of junk.
“We’re coming up to a divide, which way should we go?” Tristan asks, breaking her from the reverie.
Molly crosses her arms, “I don’t know…”
“Do you want to go left?”
Glancing that direction, she frowns. Shaking her head, she says, “I’d rather go right. If that’s okay!”
Tristan smiles, “Right it is.”
Keeping up with his long strides, Molly sighs to herself.
“Not exactly what you planned on,” he states, attempting, once more, to make conversation.
“No, I definitely did not expect to be out in space for three days,” Molly complains, crossing her arms. “I don’t really care for it.”
“Space travel isn’t for everyone,” he says. “I’ve only gotten to go a handful of times.”
Looking up at him, she lightly clears her throat, “When?”
“When I was younger, I went on a trip with Gea, Des, and her parents. It was amazing! Normally, we talked with her via telecommunicator.”
“All the time?”
“Every day if possible.”
Molly gives a small nod, “That sounds nice…”
“It was,” Tristan replies. “Granted, like I said, it was a handful of times. Our parents weren’t too keen on Gea and I being gone for extended periods of time.”
“What was the longest you were gone?”
“Five months. Half a year was too much for them, I think,” Tristan laughs. Not that he would’ve minded being gone for that time, or longer. There was so much out there to investigate, it didn’t make sense to stay in one place. That, and he didn’t venture out of his room unless it was to spend time with his friends. He’s considered a homebody by his parents, but truthfully, he doesn’t spend much time at Salineas.
“Right,” Molly remarks to herself. “There was a festival a couple years back. You and your friends weren’t there.”
“Right, the Fresian Festival,” Tristan replies. He smiles at her. “I’m amazed you remembered.”
“Oh! People commented on it. I only just connected the dots,” she says, chuckling nervously.
“Even so,” Tristan says. Stopping in front of a large entrance, he reaches his hand out. Ensuring there’s no barrier, he walks through. A table sits, unobtrusive, in the center. He inspects it all around, kneeling to peer at its underside.
Molly rubs her arm, feeling more stifled. She tilts her head, “What is a table doing here?”
“Not sure,” Tristan replies. He looks at its edge, noting the faintest outline of a pad. He shrugs, “It must’ve been used for something.”
“I guess it’d be bad if we checked…”
“It may not work anymore,” he says. “It could be a control pad for navigation, or releasing dozens of soldiers at once.”
“Maybe it’s a hologram for entertainment,” Molly lightly jokes.
He grins at her, “Maybe!”
Returning the smile, she clicks her claws against each other, “Um, well, Odessa said not to touch anything. So we should probably leave it alone.”
“We’ll bring her back to look at it,” Tristan replies.
Exiting the odd room, they begin down the other corridor.
                                                             -
Dangling from wires that stretch deep into black, hundreds of bodies hang suspended where Odessa walks. Being the main goal for this expedition, she steps past several columns before pausing in front of a random case. Wiping off imaginary dust, observing the weathered face inside, she wonders if it’s even viable. The system has continued to function. She spent the first few hours merely inspecting an aspect of her life that she only heard about. The weapons were kept in storage, and she found the pool of liquid where her father had been stripped of all free will. Further along, she encountered an odd room with a single table, its buttons and pad faintly outlined. Pressing it, it opened a hole where copious amounts of surgical tools were kept, laid in neat rows. She took them for herself, and some were medical instruments she never saw before.
With that accomplished, she ventured out to find this room. Approaching another container, she looks within to see a similar individual with long, white locks, eyes closed. Prime. Or one of him. All of these must be him. The actual Prime was never retrieved from the chasm of the flagship. No one wanted to bury him, and she doesn’t blame them. She wouldn’t either.
But this… this is another of his forms. An impressive specimen, she must admit. Even in this state, at his peak, he would’ve stood out among her father and uncles. Likely as a way of preserving their species’ capabilities of agility and strength, while keeping their physical bodies weaker than his own to overpower and dominate.
Touching the glass, she presses her face closer to the vitrine. Her father told her that he’s dead, but there had been a way of accessing his memories. Prime had done it before. She surmised that his previous bodies were kept on hand for knowledge. The body may be inanimate, but the brain, if preserved, could be examined. A corpse with a living mind. Its own special little coffin. Such a thing would frighten Etherians, who, despite their alliance with her people, still have a difficult time comprehending—or, rather, accepting—what science can do.
Odessa touches the black pad wrapping around the case. It turns on, and she balls her hand in a light fist, gently pricking her palm with her fingernails, uncertain of what to do. Rubbing her thumbs underneath her fingertips, she decides to press down on a few buttons. Nothing. She slides her digits over the longer, colored section, and it hums with energy. The vitrine lights up within, haloing the body. Its eyes remain closed but she sees his form better.
Odessa taps a few more combinations, and it glows even brighter—
Right before it opens and spills the contents out onto the ground.
“Shit,” she murmurs to herself, kneeling in front of the body. Glancing at its case, she knows there’s no way to put it back in. Tugging its face toward her, she inspects the body. It really is remarkable how preserved it is for all the decades it's been deceased.
Setting down her bag, she pulls out cotton swabs to collect skin samples, trims off claws, and pulls out teeth with a plier. Then she stares at the head for a good moment or two.
Pulling out the trephine, a gift from the table earlier, she drills a hole in the head to relieve pressure, as well as to remove excess liquid so that nothing sprays out at her. Once complete, having opted for a full removal, she puts away her tool for favor of a small, circular blade. Shearing off the hair, and some wires, from the scalp, Odessa marks where to cut with a pen. She digs into the skin and stops for a second when it makes contact with bone. Clicking it on, the blade begins to gingerly whir, and she follows the path.
Brain fluid and blood seep out onto the floor, mixing with the liquid from the vitrine. Carefully, she pulls away the bone flap, and inspects the brain for possible damage. Taking out a small scalpel, she slices at the thin layers of membrane that cling to the inside of the skull. The meninges cut, more cerebrospinal fluid spills out. Tugging it out inch by inch, she snips the connection at the brainstem and spinal cord; Odessa holds the brain in her free hand, its weight sinking into her palm. Holding up the organ, she inspects it: perfectly intact.
Laying it down on a towel, she wipes her hands off the edge of it. Odessa brings out a large jar from her bag, filling the container with any of the remaining liquid from the vitrine. She needs every bit of it though.
Holding down her helmet’s interphone, she says, “Tristan, do you copy?”
“I do, what’s up?”
“Can you come to my location and help me with something?”
“I’ll be right over,” he says.
It doesn’t take him long before he arrives, and the first thing she hears is Molly yell.
“What is that?! Is that a body?!” she demands, jumping back in disgust.
Odessa crosses her arms, “Yes, obviously.”
Tristan walks over, looking down at it. Then he turns to her, smirking, “I hope he was dead already.”
“He was,” Odessa smirks back. “I need you to move some liquid left in the vitrine into the jar behind me. I took some but it needs more.”
Molly wrinkles her nose, bothered by the nonchalance displayed by the two of them.
Tristan moves his hands in a flowing arc, pouring the water into the jar until it reaches the top. Odessa spins the cap back on, pleased with her work.
Groaning, Molly keeps her eyes on the door.
Tucking all her items with care into her bag, Odessa says, “What did you find?”
“We came across a room with a table in it, but we didn’t touch it,” Tristan replies.
"Was it before you came here?"
"Yes, why?"
Odessa gives her bag a slight shake, "These were from there!"
"Nice," he says. "Good thing we didn't open it, that'd be anticlimactic."
“Anything else?”
“We came across the kitchens, the holding cells, the area where it seems clones are born, all that fun stuff,” he says.
“Interesting,” Odessa answers. “It seems that the flagship was to keep the amount of soldiers he had, and different areas were few and far in between.”
“Seems to be,” Tristan says, walking with her and Molly to the exit. “I guess interior decorating wasn’t his thing.”
Odessa laughs, “No, I suppose not.”
Heading down the hall, they contact Hydrangea, who says she is nearby Celeste. Odessa is led by Tristan to the room with the single table, and she remarks, “I wish there were more instruments in here."
"Didn't you already have these things on hand with you?"
"Yes, but it doesn't hurt to have more!"
“I guess...” Molly murmurs.
Continuing down the corridor, Odessa asks, “Did you explore that area?”
Tristan shakes her head, “No, Molly and I checked everything else. Gea, maybe?”
“Hey, Gea, did you happen to investigate the northern corridor?” Odessa queries, clicking her interphone on.
“No, I didn’t,” her voice comes through the intercom.
“Tris, why don’t you two head back to Celeste? I’ll only take a minute. And for the love of all that’s good, keep Adam from the controls.”
“Will do, Captain,” he replies.
With that, she takes her leave. The hallway is covered with the faintest layer of dust, floating, never settling onto the surface. Odessa notes cracks in the walls, stepping over foliage that wraps through the metal. She finds a room filled with keepsakes, creatures and objects lining the walls. At the forefront, she notices shattered glass on the ground. Bending down, she raises it to her eye level, its surface poorly shining. The colors are strong, however, and it seems to have formed a particular shape at one point.
Compelled, Odessa gathers every broken fragment and places it inside her bag.
                                                              -
“What is it?” Hydrangea asks, combing through Tristan’s hair. They have bid their unwelcome guests, as Odessa puts it, goodnight, and are congregated in Hydrangea's sleeping quarters.
“I’m not sure,” Odessa says, holding up a small piece of glass. “It doesn’t seem to hold much value anymore, that’s for certain.”
Tristan tilts his head down, letting Hydrangea brush better, “A treasure from a conquered planet. Doesn’t seem to be anything else, aside from a sad reminder.”
Peering at it, Odessa checks every bit of its blue, dulled by time, but no less impressive in its sheen; its delicate thinness reveals a species that valued aesthetic beauty. Whoever this belonged to stood no chance against Prime.
Twirling the fragment in her hand, Odessa says, “But we found much more than we believed, which counts for something.”
“Which is exciting!” Hydrangea says, switching places with Tristan. “We don’t know what all this means yet, but I’m sure we will eventually.”
Odessa smiles, shaking her hands at the possibilities. Any object or clue that they find has potential. She isn’t sure where this will go, but she wants to learn as much as she can.
Like her mother always says: for science!

sv 6.01
i just watched the very first episode of silicon valley season 6 and below you will find my very spoiler-y thoughts! non-spoiler thoughts: OH MY GOD.
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST
SO MUCH HAPPENS THEY’RE NOT FUCKING SHITTING AROUND ARE THEY
okay so obviously richard’s speech was fucking brilliant. got some hamilton vibes too. very nice. tapping into the national mythos as well. that’s a sure way to resonate with policymakers/the public.
THERE IS SO MUCH JARRICH CONTENT AND ALL OF IT IS ANGST holy fucking shit oh my god jared’s anguish about his distancing from the centre that is richard? it HURTS like it is obviously making him unprofessional and it’s super sad and like, not really cool in a professional context, but oh golly i feel sorry for him :((( and there is SO MUCH OF THIS WTF
oh god the way jared’s initially unhappy and sticks by his moral guns when richard floats the blackmail idea? and then HE CHANGES HIS TUNE when he sees that by agreeing to this he can be close to richard again and get that emotional intimacy that he craves? END ME
;____________;
it’s so terrible and flawed but like yeah i see it, spot-on characterisation basically in fact it feels like a fic tbh it was so DRAMATIC unghhhhh
thank god you hear jared admitting to being a ‘craven yes-man’ due to his desire to be close to richard, like, okay, i’m glad you recognise what’s happened thank god ;___; my poor baby bird
DRIVING TO THE HOSTEL WHEN HE THINKS HE’S DRIVING TO HIS CONDO FUCKING KILL ME this is too much there is so much jarrich angst fuck me
approaching the incubee! whose name i’ve forgotten because it’s something awkward like ... guart or something. OH MY GOD!! WHAT WILL HAPPEN! surely he’s not gonna stop playing a role at pied piper.
why didn’t richard call jared in to talk about the disaster of colin when he first found out? maybe because he thinks of it as a tech issue only ... maybe becuase jared’s been doing more distant-from-richard stuff due to his COO role ... maybe dinesh and gilfoyle and monica just happened to be nearby
and oh god COLIN’S A FUCKING SNAKE
HE WAS FINE IN THE SEASON 5
NOW HE’S A FUCKING KNOB
NOOOO
ugh i liked him in s5
also oh my god oh my god his meeting with his board fuck him c’mon pied piper how are you gonna exact your revenge and spike this little toerag
COLIN’S THING ABOUT HIS GAMING SETS PERMANENTLY LISTENING
okay i know for a fact that that’s not a possible thing with today’s technology with mobile phones and stuff? like when everyone talks abt how google’s listening all the time and shows you ads, that’s not a thing that happens for a tech reason IIRC like it’s just not ... currently plausible.
so i was a bit HMMM when they put that in there. like. is it that it is possible with gaming headsets and gaming PCs for some reason?
the reason i care abt this is because i like sv to be technologically accurate where possible and if this is a super implausible thing they’ve put in there just to further the privacy issue plot then it annoys me because it’s scaremongering and it’s gonna make people think it’s a concern when it’s not really. but idk maybe i’m wrong and it is technically possible?
THAT SAID i gave it some thought and it could totally be (i think?) that this permanent-listening thing is not super plausible now but in sv universe it’s possible because colin has richard’s legendary compression. i imagine the compression would make it much easier for devices to be always listening and saving that data to a server somewhere? hmm
CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT THEY DO ABOUT COLIN
big questions though, you see richard and jared walk in on that meeting, then it cuts to jared driving ‘home’ and it’s like ...... what did richard do? i wonder.
can’t wait to see how they deal with this because i want colin to eAT ShIT
i feel like they should make a distinction between ‘collecting user data’ in the sense of ‘anonymous usage stats’ and ‘personal conversations’ because the former is something that sooo many programs/apps do today and that’s pretty normal? like chrome sending crash statistics ... and i think this is a big enough difference to make clear. because sending things like crash stats is pretty anonymous and that kind of ‘user data’ (idk if anyone in the tech world refers to this as user data but i imagine general viewers might?) being collected to improve software functioning seems pretty innocuous to me afaik and it’s only the personal/identifiable user data being collected that is you know super skeevy.
that said maybe richard/pied piper’s whole thing is not collecting any data AT ALL and that includes anonymous crash statistics. i don’t remember if this was every specified.
HMMM
oh yeah and the gilfoyle and dinesh AIs was a pretty fun subplot. i was a fan of that.
GOD THE SCENE when gilfoyle turns round like ‘stop why would you give the AI access to your contacts’ firstly gilfoyle is hot almost always and in that one specific scene, the way his left hand is resting on his knee/thigh UGH that was ........... a really attractive hand??????? ahh just. (this isn’t even lewd, his hand was nowhere near his crotch or anything just -- the way his fingers were splayed was oddly nice-looking.)
ok i’m gonna......... end this post now that i’ve made it weird bye guys

Princess Solaria: Fairy Lost
This was supposed to be crack, it didn't turn out that way and I am so, so sorry.
'Clean' Edit - the other version of this post is only a few lines different, nothing plot related, but some characters made assumptions that I felt warranted a trigger warning.
Princess Solaria: Fairy Lost (part 01)
Winx Pilot Episode AU
Bloom turns a corner and heads to the beach, Stella deals with the fall out.
If you go down to the woods today
Gardenia : Earth
Bloom fought back tears as she rode away from Mitzi, trying not to let the bully know she'd gotten under Bloom's skin. From the basket of her bike, Kiko made a worried, inquiring noise.
“I'm okay Kiko,” dashing away a tear that escaped her eye, Bloom checked the traffic and turned the corner, heading to the beach.
Deep in the wooded area of Gardenia's largest park, a magical battle was taking place. Or it had been.
As a young blonde woman struggled against the hold of several ghouls, a large yellow ogre picked a glowing staff off the ground, holding it aloft triumphantly. The young woman screamed at him, her voice muffled by a ghouls hand, her attempts weakened as she finally reached her limit.
Tears slipped from her eyes as the ogre opened a portal, summoning the ghouls to him as he stepped through, her staff clutched in his hands.
Freed at last, the young woman scrambled to her feet, on her back small wings fluttered, her feet left the ground and she flew across the small distance, crashing into a tree as the portal closed just before she reached it. With a weak cough, she fell to the ground, her form glowing as she lost consciousness, her clothes changing, her hair spilling loose from its ties.
Alone in the park, the injured fairy sleeps.
Stella woke to cold and pain, shivering at the base of a tree. Her eyes darted around the clearing, looking for any sign of... anything. Foot prints from the ogre had left shallow indents in the ground hidden by the grass. Not that she could see much of anything in the post dusk gloom.
Using the tree to get to her feet she staggered. Across her skin small scratches from the ghouls claws stung, bruising was beginning to spread from where she'd been hit, and from where she'd hit the tree.
Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, she winced as her ribs protested, then refocused, calling to her magic.
“No,” she'd drained herself nearly dry trying to fight off her assailants, she barely had any energy left to burn. “Okay, okay,” she said to herself to try and focus her thoughts, “I just, need to figure out where I am.” Stella slid her hand into her pocket and pulled out her phone.
Her very broken phone. In the dark of the woods, the Princess of Solaria swore. She knew next to nothing about electronics, past how to find the 'on' switch. She'd need help to repair her device.
Which meant finding people.
She tilted her head back and eyed the stars which were beginning to litter the night sky. She shivered again as a cool night breeze rustled through the trees, its cold fingers caressing her bare midriff and arms.
The stars above were unfamiliar to her, not a single constellation rang a bell. Stella swore again.
'It's fine,' she told herself, 'I can... I... it's fine, I'll be fine, just... find some people.' Calming herself as best she could, Stella opened her mind to the Voice of Nature. She was no plant fairy, but the Fairy of the Sun and Moon was more than capable of hearing the Voice.
She just hadn't practised in several months, since the last time she'd had to for class before her... expulsion. She'd certainly never done it with such low magic reserves.
The Voice in the woods was sluggish, sleepy, as though it wasn't used to whispering in the ears of fairies. 'People?' it said, 'yes, there are people, this way. And this way, and that way as well.'
“Great,” Stella hissed, annoyed at the Voice of Nature's unhelpfulness. 'Well,' she thought, 'at least I know it doesn't matter which way I go, as long as I go, there will be people.'
Steeling herself, Stella took a few steps forwards, stumbling and falling as her ankle gave way. With a cry she hit the ground, knees and hands stinging at the impact. Whimpering she rolled to her side, turning to sit on her behind so she could check her hands and knees, barely visible in the dark. Her ankle throbbed, and Stella recalled the too tight grip of a ghoul in the same spot.
Stella swore for a third time, then a fourth and fifth, and kept swearing for a long, long minute.
She should have been at Alfea by now, enjoying her school bed in her nice, warm, well lit dorm, not injured in some dark, cool, back of nowhere woods.
Her next breath was shaking, like the kind that came with tears. 'Crying solves nothing!' she berated herself, untying her wedge sandals. She could either stumble around in the wedges, or she could risk going bare foot, and given the state of her ankle, she decided bare feet would be the lesser of two evils.
If she'd had more magic, she might have conjured one of her suitcases from its carry space and pulled on some flats, and put on a jacket, but the way she was feeling, even that would dry up her barely there reserves, and she'd be worse off than before.
Standing again, Stella began to walk, her limp far less noticeable without the sandals now dangling from her fingers. As she moved through the trees she mentally berated herself.
Why hadn't she just accepted the royal escort, why had she'd decided to go alone?
But she knew why, she'd chosen to teleport herself with the Staff of Solaria. A near instant transportation which had been hijack mid- transit. Something which should have been impossible.
After a long few minutes, Stella spotted lights through the trees, golden glowing lamps which, as she drew closer, she could see lined a walk way. People walked here and there, though only a few. Judging by their manner of dress, Stella thought they might not feel as cold as she did. As she walked further from the tree line, the people turned to stare at her, a few making aborted motions as if they wanted to approach her but decided against it. Self conscious, Stella wrapped her arms around herself and kept walking.
A woman made her way over to her, a man trailing a fair way behind.
“kbem, nladjb anvu ksadbvlw?” Stella stopped, looking at the woman with confusion and mounting dread. The woman looked standard, but the language she spoke wasn't translating. The possible reasons for that were few, and Stella could only think of two: she didn't have enough magic to operate the Universal Translation Spell (which was the magical equivalent of land-dwellers breathing), or she was on a world that had been cut of from the rest of the Magical Dimension for so long, the UTS didn't have an up-to-date vocabulary for it.
Both scenarios were terrifying.
“I'm sorry, I don- I don't understand,” Stella's voice cracked slightly as she was struck by just how lost she was. The woman didn't seem to understand Stella's language either, but she smiled kindly and held out a jacket, Stella wasn't sure what the woman was doing, and just stared at the coat. The woman frowned when Stella didn't move, Stella worried she'd committed a serious mis-step, but a look of realisation passed across the woman's face, and she pulled the jacket back, point to Stella and made an exaggerated shivering motion, rubbing her arms, and held the jacket out again.
Stella realised she herself was shivering heavily, and that the woman was offering the coat to keep warm. With a grateful “thank you,” Stella took the coat and slipped it around her shoulders like a cape, holding it closed with one hand.
The woman pointed to Stella again, speaking as she did, then pointed to herself and a bench nearby.
She began repeating the series of motions when Stella got it. 'You and me, let's go sit.' With a hesitant nod, Stella began moving towards the bench. As the two women went, Stella noticed the man who'd been trailing the other woman, standing nearby and talking quietly into a mobile phone.
'Well, at least I'm not in a no-tech world,' Stella mused, clutching the jacket a little tighter around herself.
The bench they sat down on was just to the side a pair of lamps, the area well lit. Stella took the chance to check her hands, which were smeared with green from the grass, though the skin didn't seem broken. Sweeping the side of her long skirt to the side, she grimaced, the hand print of the ghoul was clear and dark on her skin.
The woman spoke again, indicating between them, but Stella had no idea what the woman wanted now. The woman tried again, the words sounded... different. Not just different words but... something about them didn't sound like the words the woman had been using thus far. It happened several times as the woman tried to communicate, and finally Stella got it.
“I'm from Solaria, do you speak Solan? How about Dimensional Standard? No chance you know Arcane Royal? Oh, what about Old Fae? No? Urgh, I don't no any other languages well enough to matter!”
The duo ran out of languages to try, and Stella felt like crying. How could she be this far from anything familiar?!
The call of a male voice made her look up. The man on the phone was waving people in their direction.
Stella almost laughed. It seemed at least one thing was familiar, even here on this strange world, she could tell some of the people coming over were medical professionals. The rest she thought might be some kind of guard, though civilian, royal or military she couldn't say. But all of them were women.
Sitting in the sterile room in a white gown, Stella was mortified. When the medical and security personnel had arrived at the park, she'd been happy, because she was in pain and cold and lost and had thought they'd be able to help her.
And they had, for the most part. With some of the most non-magical tech she had ever seen. Everyone had spoken to her in low gentle tones, several people had been brought in to try new languages, and some of the law enforcement agents had taken photos of her.
Stella was sore, and tired and so low on magic that it made her feel gross, and she was sick and tired of being poked and prodded.
Her clothes had been taken away, from her wedges to her headdress, and the medical staff had begun giving her strange looks, whispering in harsh tones to each other, almost excited.
Stella was beginning to get a bad feeling about everything.
She'd finally begun picking up a few words here and there, the UTS took far longer to work on new languages when people were talking at her rather than with her or, more commonly over the last few hours, around her and moving in and out of the room so often she couldn't get a decent conversation to happen in range.
When the men in suits showed up though, she didn't need to understand their words. Greed leaked from them with terrifying intensity. They looked at her like a thing rather than a person.
One of the nurses, the kind one who'd brought Stella a second serving of bland food despite the doctor's disproving frown, stepped between the men and Stella, waving a clipboard full of paper work in their faces and speaking over them as loud as she could.
One of the law officers stepped forward, demanding I.D., and one of the men in suits pushed back his fancy jacket to reach a wallet. Stella froze, her stomach plummeting.
Stella wasn't stupid, she'd seen plasma blasters and laser rifles and slug throwers before. She wasn't stupid, and the design might have been completely alien to her, but she knew a gun when she saw it. While the man handed over his I.D. Stella tugged on the sleeve of the nearby nurse and made a squirming motion, pretending like she had to pee really badly. With a beckoning motion, the nurse directed her to a door just down the hall. One of the men moved to stop her, but the nurse held up her hands and planted herself firmly in his way, say something firmly.
Stella could only make out a few words, something about 'peeing in the car'?
Letting out a slightly hysterical snort, she slipped into the restroom and away from the men in suits. The restroom had several stalls, which would work in Stella's favour, as long as she didn't over do it. Taking care of business first, because she kind of really did need to go, Stella summoned one of her suitcases from its carry space and opened it open on a closed toilet lid. It wasn't the one she'd thought it was, but it would have to do.
Quickly, she dressed in long pants and a long sleeved top, finding her pair of emergency flats at the bottom. Going commando was not ideal, but for now she needed to conserve as much magic as she could and she still had a cosmetic spell to cast. Snagging her pair of light reactive glasses before shoving her case away, she peeked out of her stall to check for witnesses. Seeing no one, she stepped across to the sinks, rinsing her hands a final time and patting them dry before focusing on her hair.
Changing hair colour was one of the first transformation spells Wizgiz taught students at Alfea. Stella was a pro at cosmetic magic, but even so, there were ways to lessen the magical requirements of the spell. Rather than change her hair completely, Stella let the natural echo of her father's genes take over, the deep ginger of his hair spilling through her own golden locks.
With quick hand motions, Stella twisted her hair into a stylishly messy braid, performing the little hair twist she'd learnt to lock the plait in place without a hair band, and slipped her glasses on. Technically they were sun glasses, but with their light reactive properties, the lenses only darkened in the sun.
Stepping back Stella smiled, she looked different enough from herself that she should be able to walk right past every one with out being stopped.
Staring her reflection in the eye Stella said “you've got this.”
As much as she'd like to stay and receive medical assistance, every fibre of her being was screaming at her to run, that the men in suits were Bad News.
Straightening her back, Stella left the restroom, walking calmly down the hall, barely sparing a glance at the men in suits who were still waiting for the blonde in the hospital gown to come back. No one spared Stella a second glance.
Cloud Tower : Magix
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!” Glass shattered as a white haired witch let loose a blast of energy, rage contorted her face as she glared at the ring before her. Nearby by, two other witches were watching her with a hint of fear, more afraid of her rage, than they were angry at the ring.
“NOTHING!????? HOW!? This trinket is useless to us!”
“Icy-”
“WHAT!” The brunette flinched back slightly.
“The Ring of Solaria is still really powerful-”
“But it's not the Dragon Fire!”
The witch in red leaned forward, “but maybe we can use its power to find the Dragon Fire?”

Leaving Facebook Part III: Goodbye to All That
Remember what it was to be me: that is always the point.
I'm in the final countdown to deleting Facebook, and not a moment too soon.
TL;DR:
Primary posts will be here
I'll be sending out a monthly Life Olympics newsletter
If you want email, mail, and/or newsletters, let me know where to find you
I think we are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not.
The Wind-Down
I've backed up my data, I've collected contact info, and I've explored a variety of new platforms with varying degrees of success.
I've reached a tentative consensus on my plan for moving forward. It's a little more complex than I would have liked, but I'm settling into some new habits and I'll continue to iterate and refine over time. Here's where I've landed:
Nothing was irrevocable; everything was within reach. Just around every corner lay something curious and interesting, something I had never before seen or done or known about.
Consuming
I chose: Apple News. I slept on this for a while, for reasons I can't totally remember. I revisited it and spent some time customizing it and decided it's the best newsfeed for me for now.
Tumblr media
Pros:
Free
UX is good and it's easy to follow publications/topics
iCloud syncing across devices + desktop app is hard to beat. The next best product I looked at (Thread News) only had a mobile app, which was a dealbreaker for me.
I follow mostly mainstream-is publications and there's a full database of sources that are easy to follow.
I haven't tried News+ yet but I like the option of it - a while ago I had a similar magazine aggregator from Conde Nast that I loved and this seems similar or better.
Cons:
Initially, I didn't like the Top Stories on the home page. I don't really love the CNN/ABC/CBS-type focus on 24-hour headline news and wish this was better curated from my interests and favorite publications. I finally figured out that you can limit the Home Page to publications that you follow, but it's not an obvious setting.
I hate that share/copy link produces an apple.news url instead of the native url; this is obnoxious.
Runner Up: Thread News had a really nice Daily Digest feature that curated from your favorite publications.
I chose: Pocket for random articles that I come across on Twitter, in Slack, or recommended through text messages, I save them to Pocket to read later.
Tumblr media
Pros:
Free (with premium paid option)
Syncs across desktop, mobile, iPad app; app UX is nicely optimized across devices
Tagging (good for saving favorites)
"Article view" that clears out web junk for a streamlined reading experience
Chrome extension for easy clipping/adding
Cons:
None yet; it's simple and works the way I want it to
Runner up: Instapaper. It has very similar functionality to Pocket, I just slightly prefer the design of Pocket. If you like a really minimalist reading experience, Instapaper is for you.
Keepers of private notebooks are a different breed altogether, lonely and resistant rearrangers of things, anxious malcontents, children afflicted apparently at birth with some presentiment of loss.
Creating
This one was a beast. I struggled for weeks to parse out exactly what I wanted on this front and which criteria were most important to me, because it became clear quickly that I wasn't going to get everything I wanted in one place.
I chose: Tumblr I initially wrote this off because the homepage/discovery can be nauseating without the right default settings. A tour of the mobile version convinced me to give this a second look: the mobile app is great and the posting experience is (pardon the cliche) delightful. I decided to give it a deeper dive behind the scenes and found that I was able to customize a lot of what I initially disliked. The auto formatting for photo, quote, link, and chat posts is charming and simple.
Pros:
Customizing themes is simple and there are a lot of choices.
I can use my personal domain
The posting experience is easy and relatively error-free
The tagging! I love my tags and they work so nicely. I was also able to find a theme that features tags so you will always have easy access to the latest photos of Darwin.
Great for multimedia posting
Built-in share buttons
Cons:
Not very good at importing content from other platforms; I manually recreated a few favorite posts, but otherwise pretty much had to start from scratch on content
No built-in analytics, aside from follower counts, which is not something I expect to care about or track. I set up tracking on Google Analytics, but I'll miss the built-in analytics that WordPress had. Since WP bought Tumblr, I'm hoping that they may eventually add these features to Tumblr
I just don't care about the social/discovery components here and I wish I could turn them off
Ads. I wish I could pay to make them go away.
Runner up: micro.blog For the first couple of weeks, I thought this was going to be my choice. I had a solid experience importing and archiving a lot of my content from WordPress, Instagram, and Medium. Unfortunately, once I started trying to use the platform on a daily basis, I ran into a lot of issues and challenges that gave me pause on using and recommending the platform. To be clear, a good number of these issues were either user-error or bespoke preferences due to my personal quirks on how I want to organize and share content on the Internet. Some of this is a result of it being a new-ish platform that still has some blind spots for non-developers; it's not a mainstream product yet and I'm not sure it's trying to be. Based on my personal preferences, I felt Tumblr was slightly better equipped for my use case. I'm still going to keep using micro.blog for a while in tandem with Tumblr to see if my preferences change and/or if the platform adopts some of the feedback I shared with regard to cross-posting and UX.
I chose: Drafts. One big challenge for me in this process was the desire to cross-post some content in multiple places while limiting where I post other content. I didn't want to fill my Twitter feed with cat pictures, but I wanted some little corner of the Internet for Darwin's biggest fans (my mother). Drafts is basically a universal text editor that pushes drafts of text to a variety of services, including micro.blog, Twitter, Day One, Google Drive, Evernote, WordPress, Gmail, and even text messages. It's highly configurable and I'm only just scratching the surface of its power. Creating text drafts here allows me to easily push drafts to a variety of different places with just a few keystrokes. It syncs with iCloud, has really robust tagging and filtering, and has mobile, iPad, and Mac apps. It's very cool.
He laughed literally until he choked, and I had to roll down the taxi window and hit him on the back. "New faces," he said finally, "don't tell me about new faces.”
Engagement
I chose: Twitter I've increasingly found Twitter to be a place where my friends/followers care about what I care about. The messages I care most about sharing are amplified. I can choose to unfollow, mute, or block people who are harassing or distressing me. I can follow people whose expertise I value. It can still be a cesspool at times but Twitter leadership seems to be taking steps to improve the platform - identifying misinformation, a conversation feature that limits replies, etc. For now, it stays.
Coming Soon: Substack I haven't officially started this yet, but I'm going to start a monthly newsletter that (allegedly) goes out the first Sunday of every month. I'm going to use roughly my annual Life Olympics format except there will be fun and exciting recommendations. Teaser: new Life Olympics categories will make their debut in the first installment on July 5! If you want it, make sure you give me your email address and you'll receive the first edition.
It’s easy to see the beginnings of things, and harder to see the ends.
All quotes by Joan Didion, Slouching Towards Bethlehem
Many, many thanks to Jason Becker for his recommendations, patience, and tech support on this project.

What’s the Best Programming Language to Learn First? It Depends April 18, 2017 By Alex McPeak 7 Comments
Whether you’re looking to begin coding as a hobby, a new career, or just to enhance your current role, the first thing you’ll have to do is decide which programming language you want to start with.
There is no right answer, of course. Choosing a first language will depend on what kind of projects you want to work on, who you want to work for, or how easy you want it to be. Hopefully, this guide will help give you a better idea of which one you should pursue.
Python Python is always recommended if you’re looking for an easy and even fun programming language to learn first. Rather than having to jump into strict syntax rules, Python reads like English and is simple to understand for someone who’s new to programming. This allows you to obtain a basic knowledge of coding practices without having to obsess over smaller details that are often important in other languages.
Python also is ideal for web development, graphic user interfaces (GUIs), and software development. In fact, it was used to build Instagram, YouTube, and Spotify, so it’s clearly in demand among employers in addition to having a faster onboarding.
Though it has it’s advantages, Python is often thought of as a slow language that requires more testing and is not as practical for developing mobile apps as other languages.
C# While C is one of the more difficult languages to learn, it’s still an excellent first language pick up because almost all programming languages are implemented in it. This means that once you learn C, it’ll be simple to learn more languages like C++ and C#.
Because C is more “machine-level”, learning it is great for teaching you how a computer functions. Software Developer Joel Spolsky compares it to understanding basic anatomy before becoming a medical doctor, making it the best way to code efficiently.
In this way, C is an exceptional choice to become a master coder and a talented developer from the get-go if you’re willing to take on the challenge.
Java Java is an object-oriented and feature-heavy programming language that’s in high demand. It’s been built under the premise of “Write once, run anywhere,” meaning that it can be written on any device and work cross-platform.
This makes it one of the most desired (yes, we mean high-paid) language skills. So, if you’re looking to learn a language that’s going to get you a great career, this might be the one, especially since top employers for Java programmers including Ebay, Amazon, and IBM.
Additionally, Java is often used for Android and iOS app development, as it’s the basis of the Android operating system, which makes it one of the best choices if you want to build mobile apps.
While it may not be as easy to pick up as Python, Java is a high-level language, and so it’s still relatively beginner-friendly. However, it has a slow startup and will take beginners much longer to deploy their first project.
JavaScript JavaScript is another incredibly popular language. Many websites that you use every day rely on JavaScript including Twitter, Gmail, Spotify, Facebook, and Instagram according to General Assembly.
Additionally, it’s a must-have when adding interactivity to websites because it communicates with HTML and CSS. This makes it essential for front-end development and consumer-facing websites while becoming increasingly important in back-end development and growing in demand all the time. Because of its popularity, JavaScript is also the leading the charge in test automation frameworks, being the backbone of frameworks like Protractor and Nightwatch.JS.
There’s nothing to install with JavaScript since it’s already built into browsers, so it’s the easiest language to get started with in terms of set-up. The con here is that this means it’s interpreted differently across browsers (you’ll need to do some extra cross-browser testing) and may have deficiencies in responsive design compared to server-side scripts.
Again, while it’s not the most difficult to learn, it certainly isn’t as easy as Python. If Javascript does seem difficult at first, try out this Javascript tutorial that’s so easy a cat could do it.
Ruby Ruby is similar to Python in that it’s one of the easiest languages for people with no prior programming experience to read. You don’t need to know a ton of commands or programming vocabulary to learn it, and it has a multitude of libraries and tools that come in handy.
A big reason people like Ruby is because of the awesome full-stack framework, Ruby on Rails, which is becoming increasingly popular among startups and enterprise solutions. Airbnb, Groupon, Hulu, and Soundcloud are just a few of the websites that were built with Ruby on Rails, and Ruby has quite the active developer community today.
The reason it’s so popular for small businesses, however, is often one of the many criticisms against it. Ruby can have the challenge of scalability across a large system and may have a hard time with performance on larger websites. Additionally, while Ruby is certainly easy to learn, you’ll find most of the opportunities come from learning Ruby on Rails, which may slow down your learning curve if you were just expecting to take the easy way out to create a website.
So, What’s the Best Programming Language to Learn? If you’re looking for something easy: Python If you want a solid foundation to make you a master developer: C If you’re looking for a job or want to make mobile apps: Java If you want to try front-end development: Javascript If you’re programming for your startup’s website: Ruby While there may be a strategy to choosing, Roger Collier emphasizes that programming is hard no matter what you pick (even with Python). It’ll be frustrating to get started, and moreover, become really good at it. However, he also suggests that this affinity for taking on the challenge to learn a skill that others may not have the patience for is what inherently makes coders so unique.
In his own words, Collier — a Javascript enthusiast — asserts  “Learning programming is hard, and that’s why I like it.”
Especially for testers, as the QA industry begins to increasingly require skills in test automation, programming knowledge becomes an invaluable asset. In “Coding is key to a test automation career: Are you prepared?” T.J. Maher advances that learning to code is the number one way to break into test automation. Then, even after you think you understand it, you need to continue practicing all the time.
“The most important thing is not to stop practicing to code once you’re hired as a test automation engineer,” said Maher. “Learning is a never-ending journey.”
Additionally, no matter what language you choose, you’d be well advised not to stop after your first language — the best programmers have a combination under their belt. After you learn one, the rest will likely be easier to pick up.
To get started on with test automation in one of these languages, check out Selenium testing guides or check out our eBook on moving from manual to automated testing.
And, if you still can’t decide, here’s a really cool infographic that should make things easier for you.

I have a whole Meetup full of manual testers who are trying to figure out how to survive in todays ever-changing software testing job market, at the Ministry of Testing – Boston. How do we learn Soap UI? How do we learn about Applitools? We have Moshe Milman, COO and co-inventor of Applitools visiting us next Tuesday. says

what if the software/web/app developed with C language or any other language, then will it be a compulsory for guy to have knowledge of all programming languages or one will work to test that program. and if one will work then suppose the program is build on java then ow will it be possible for tester to test the program because he doesn’t know the programming language on which program was developed.

i think when choosing a programming language, it’s just as important to check how much you could potentially earn now and in the future. I learned a long time ago I love to program, it does not mater what language I use. So I follow the money so I can have a secure future.
I’ve used many websites in the past but I find inforgraphics such as the following very helpful in making a financial programming decision.

They are all very useful if you care about how much you get paid and want it to be part of your decision making process.

This is nice but doesn’t really go deep about which language is a good career option. The best material on the topic I’ve found is this one https://medium.com/@alex.petkov/best-programming-languages-to-learn-in-2018-ultimate-guide-bfc93e615b35 Cheers!

About The Creator
This amazing product “Funnelvio” is created by Neil Napier. This man is not strange in IM anymore. He is well-known as a talented product developer in the online space.
Over $4M in sales via JVZoo alone
Sold over 100,000 units of different software & training
Generated over $7M in 7 years as a marketer
Creator of Kyvio, Meetvio and Mailvio – Backed By 20M Page Views and $5M In Customer Sales
Some of his remarkable products such as SyndRanker 2.0, FlowTraffic, Email Ramp, Mailvio 25k, Meetvio, MailEngageX, Funnel247, Webinar X etc.
In this new launch, Neil has teamed up with Dragan Plushkovsk and Simon Warner – JV Manager. These guys have also gained their reputation for many high-quality products as well.
I am sure you will enjoy using this mind blowing funnel builder technology. I really thankful to Neil for bringing this up to marketers like you and me.
Why Funnelvio & Why Not Other Funnel Builder Platforms?
Your current funnel builder is leaking profits and costing you way more than it should. I know – this may come as disappointing news, but i better tell you this now. Because the longer we wait, the more money you lose.
The current funnel builders in the market (including the big one that starts with c) do 3 things critically wrong (and that loses you money!). Their pages load slow. This means many visitors don’t even see your headline – let alone see the optin box or the buy button. So you lose money.
Their sites go down. Now this doesn’t happen all the time – but imagine if it happens while you are sleeping, or you are draining money on ads – not cool, right? But here’s the worst thing about them. They overcharge you. Like way, waaaay overcharge you.
Listen, I’ve been in the software business for 3+ years, and there’s one thing I know – technology, hosting and support are becoming cheaper by the day. There’s no way you should be paying $297 per month for software that is slow, and sometimes doesn’t work!
And in our marketing trend research over the past year, we found that most of the funnels you have built in the past are built on old architecture, and are slow, and so unreliable.
Also, the funnel builder you use right now (IF you have one) is more expensive than what you see on this page.
Here is what Funnelvio offer…
Ultra-Fast Page Loading Faster than anything out there
Real-Time Funnel Visualization Enabled
Watch the funnel take shape as you create it
Advanced Pixel-Perfect Drag-And-Drop Editor
Create the perfect funnel page with point-n-click simplicity
Funnelvio Review – How Does It Work?
Funnelvio works in 3 simple steps.
Funnelvio Review – Inside Members Area
Choose any one of the funnel type. You have 5 option to choose.
For this test, i am choosing webinar funnel. Next, set each page a roll. I am setting page 1 as my sales page.
Page roll set up complete for this funnel.
No, choose a template from Funnelvio. This is 100% done for you already. However, you can customize them.
Onece you finish customize the sale page, you have to customize all the other pages as well.
Once you complete the customization, just publish your funnel.
Now, you can see a complete stat such as how much hits your funnels getting and what is the traffic source and things like that.
Top 3 Features I Personally Like From “Funnelvio”
Feature #1: Brand New Drag-And-Drop Page Builder Tech
It’s so smooth to use that you’ll instantly fall in love with it. The level of flexibility and precision you get with this builder will make your competitors think you’ve hired an expensive designer.
Which is going to result in well-designed pages. And you know what well-designed pages mean by that? You ‘re going to make more sales. As a matter of fact, we have a V2 version of this builder in development, which will give you both block-based and freestyle drag’n drop building capabilities. And you’ll get a free upgrade to that.
Feature #2: Create Fast-Loading Funnel Pages
Funnelvio creates fast loading funnels and pages. Take a look the speed of a Funnelvio page. It’s amazing. Blazingly fast loading pages with 99.9% uptime powered by Google Cloud.
Feature #3: The Funnel Cloner
What especially caught my attention was being able to clone other funnels from elsewhere. I would find that extremely useful. This feature allows you to instantly copy/clone any page or a funnel in one click. You can customize everything after cloning those pages or funnels. Create and clone pages in multiple languages to skyrocket conversions by targeting customers from all over the world.
Funnelvio Review – The Pricing & Comparison
The features, the design and the performance of Funnelvio are unmatched in the market. And this is the reason that the introductory (incredibly low) one-time price you see here on this page today is for a very limited period of time.
In fact, once this special launch comes to end. Funnelvio would be priced at par with the other Funnel Builders out there, if not more…given its clear superiority.
Funnelvio is the future of online selling…traditional funnel builders don’t even come close. See the features and pricing difference for yourself below.
Funnelvio (vs) Kartra (vs) Click funnels (vs) Leadpages
For the price of $77 (limited time), you also get all these amazing bonuses for free.
Right now is your only opportunity to get Funnelvio (and these exclusive high-value bonuses) for such an incredibly low introductory offer. With stunning pages packed into a powerful funnel that adapts to your customers buying journey from placing an order…to upsell them additional products or upgrades that you offer all the way to a hassle-free checkout cart.
Funnelvio has proven to be:
Ultra-Fast & Super Easy To Use
Reliable With 3+ years of 99.9% Uptime
Successful in Delivering Extraordinary Results
Funnelvio Review From Users
Truly an innovative and versatile funnel. There are so many features I like are available with this funnel, the templates, cloning successful funnels, translating to other languages. No wonder it took over 15 months in the making, it is so far advanced . Neil, STOP! Funnelvio is crushing ALL other funnels.
Wow! This awesome technology is going to level the playing field for many smaller sellers/affiliates – now we can COPY & EDIT without having to start from scratch! Can’t wait to get my hands on this game-changer!
Funnelvio looks like a really useful and easy tool to create funnels. What especially caught my attention was being able to clone other funnels from elsewhere. I would find that extremely useful.
Funnelvio’s visual sales funnel builder is easy to use and has plenty of options available. Their great selection of mobile responsive landing page templates. They are some of the best I’ve seen, and really easy to edit and publish.
P.S. This is not the first time I am replacing a tool I had been using in the past with Neil’s product. He is known to over-deliver every. single. time.
In my 7 years in the industry, I have seen hundreds of tools hitting the markets every day. But, only a handful of Marketers out there work out of pure passion and Neil is certainly one of them. Until recently I had been using ClickFunnels. Because of limited features and an exorbitant fee structure I had been actively looking for a better alternative. Then a few months back Neil asked me to give Funnelvio a try and give him my feedback.

Introduction
A well-planned sales funnel is the backbone of virtually every successful online business and yet, very few online businesses have one. Most businesses find the whole process of building a funnel too complicated. Some have tried, but failed to see any major increase in sales, revenue & profits.
Why is that? Well, the #1 reason is that they all are still using Funnel Builders that are built on old architecture, and are slow, unreliable, complicated & very expensive.
There is a new Funnel Builder platform that will going to change this all from today. It’s called “Funnelvio”.

Working from Home Because of Coronavirus? These Are Your Tech Fixes
And on the umpteenth day of the coronavirus panic, the overlords commanded: Thou shalt work from house.
As brand-new cases of the viral infection appear within the U.S., many business have actually begun preparing staff members to work from home– or what the cool kids call “WFH.” Some organizations consisting of Twitter are motivating workers around the world to work from their personal homes until further notice.
For some, it’s a dream. Sweatpants and slippers all day long? Sign me up! For others, it’s a nightmare. Slow internet and chatty relative? I ‘d rather work from the germ-laden
McDonald’s
ball pit– heck, the Wi-Fi might be better
In search of the greatest work-from-home tech inconveniences and services, I got in touch with WSJ tech writer Christopher Mims, who simply invested six months composing a book– from house, naturally.
” I ‘d state the best obstacles have nothing at all to do with tech,” Mr. Mims informed me. “To work from home, you should change your mind-set and discover a place in your house that feels completely different. The modification in your tools will follow.”
As constantly, he’s right. As you prepare to telecommute, the first thing you need to do is specify your area. He’s likewise a little incorrect: That physical space must be dictated by your various tech needs, consisting of Wi-Fi strength and room for peripherals.
I gathered nine of the most significant WFH tech annoyances and dug up some options.
Just bear this in mind as you read: While many business might lack the best remote-work tech and security tools, they might also have rules about what you can and can’t utilize. Make certain to contact your organization’s IT contact prior to using any third-party software application, etc. I do not want any upset emails from your hard-working admins.
This is Christopher Mims, not Joanna Stern. Among the WFH-friendly gear in his personal armory are Rainbean’s $18 adjustable laptop stand; LapGear’s $55 lap desk with built-in mousepad; the $13 Grifiti Fat Wrist Pad; the $30 MOFT X tablet stand and Arteck’s $25 stainless-steel Bluetooth keyboard. Dog sold separately.
Image:. Amanda Shepherd.
Little Jim is playing Xbox like there’s no tomorrow. Not-so-little Susie is FaceTiming with all her pals. And it’s taking permanently to download a 600- page deck.
.
According to my coworkers’ reporting, most U.S. homes do not utilize the majority of their bandwidth. You might experience downturns throughout durations of heavy usage due to a variety of elements– not simply your service provider and your screen-addicted kids, but also your router and your location in the house.
You can evaluate your Web speed via Ookla’s Speedtest, though you’ll need to be able to understand things like “megabits per second.”
” Unless you have a low-bandwidth internet service provider connection, you’re most likely not lacking web bandwidth. More likely you are exhausting Wi-Fi bandwidth,” stated Tim Higgins, managing editor of router-review website SmallNetBuilder and my on-call networking guru.
The best solution for superior connectivity? Given that most laptops do not have Ethernet ports any longer, you’ll need a dongle for that.
Amazon
( Anker is my preferred dongle brand) You’ll also need an Ethernet cable television to link to your router.
If Ethernet isn’t a choice, relocation as close as you can to your Wi-Fi router. “Devices that are getting weak signals eat up more bandwidth,” Mr. Higgins said. “So if Susie is continuously FaceTiming from the back bedroom that is far from the router, she’s most likely sucking up airtime.” Household bonding the 2020 way: Everybody ’round the router, singing campfire tunes.
A mesh router can assist. WSJ’s Joanna Stern and her miniature friends describe how the brand-new Wi-Fi router systems work– and which is the finest one to purchase.
Wait, the Wi-Fi is just fine. I think … perhaps … Gmail is just down?
.
Bookmark Is It Down Right Now?
I can not potentially be productive without my 2nd, 3rd or 53 rd monitor.
.
Apparent service: Purchase a screen for house. Take a look at The Wirecutter’s suggestions I bought a $150 Asus display nearly five years back and we’re still really happy together. Dongle alert #2: You’ll likely require one to link to a more recent USB-C laptop computer.
Not-as-obvious option: Utilize an iPad. Sure, it’s a smaller display, however I discover it excellent for setting up a messaging window or a crucial site I regularly need– especially since it’s a cordless connection. If you have a Mac running the current MacOS Catalina and an iPad with iOS 13 you have actually a function called Sidecar. This allows you to wirelessly utilize your iPad as your Mac’s 2nd screen. Fire up the Sidecar app on your Mac and it’s real easy to establish. ( Detailed guidelines from Apple discovered here)
If you have a Windows PC or an older Mac, try Duet, an app that lets you do the very same thing. You’ll likely need a good iPad stand to make this work– or among these cool arms that connects your iPad to your laptop computer screen
The canine! The kids!
.
Noise-canceling earphones, individuals.
Ugh, email. It’s so much simpler to just walk over to somebody’s desk.
.
Opportunities are your business is set up with some sort of chat or video-conferencing tools.
Apple’s latest $249 AirPods Pro assure a much better fit thanks to the new, different-sized silicone ear tips, however how well do they remain in? WSJ’s Joanna Stern got on a mechanical bull and recruited some street performers to discover. Picture illustration: Adele Morgan/ The Wall Street Journal.
Sometimes, however, it’s easier to hash something out on the phone or via video chat. You’ve got great deals of video-calling apps to select from– Skype, Google Hangouts, Zoom or even FaceTime. Select whatever your coworkers use and feel comfortable with.
I’m not going to supply pointers on how to finest video-chat. Just keep in mind: The electronic camera is on, and your associates do not wish to see your zebra-patterned pajamas. Oh, and lights should be in front of you, not behind you– no backs to the window.
Enjoyable fact from Mr. Higgins: Video-conferencing services are likely to be larger bandwidth hogs than.
Netflix
Streaming apps download streams in chunks of information, while video chat needs to be continuously streaming.
Crap, there’s an important file on my work desktop.
.
Business now offer cloud drive storage that’s protected and simple to utilize. You can tuck files you might require in there for safekeeping and remote access. If your business doesn’t have the alternative, you might utilize the storage available devoid of Google,.
Apple,
Microsoft
or.
Dropbox,
or spend for an upgraded strategy. Despite the fact that cloud drives are personal, it’s on you to make certain you’re not copying over anything that could be deemed specifically delicate by your company.
There are likewise ways to access your desktop remotely, but this falls under the domain of your IT department, and I don’t suggest you do it without your employer’s approval and support.
SHARE YOUR IDEAS
What are your greatest tech obstacles when working from home? Join the discussion listed below.
.
Martin in Sales: Your child is cute and all, however we don’t wish to hear “Let It Go” for the 100 th time.
.
Mute your mic, aka MYM. Write it down on a Post-it, your hand, I don’t care. If you’re on a call, simply mute whenever you aren’t talking. And please share this tip with Martin in Sales!
I use my desk phone to make abroad calls, and there’s no way I’m using my smartphone and paying overage expenses.
.
Google Hangouts, WhatsApp and Skype allow you to make phone calls over the Internet to anywhere in the world for very low rates. And if you’re both on the service, the call is complimentary.
Speaking of calls, you’ll likely be on a lot of them. Keep a portable battery charger useful. Again, I like Anker– especially this design
I decided to rapidly clip my toe nails in the bathroom, and now my employer is flipping out that I’m not responding.
.
Communication is the toughest part of telecommuting. Supervisors, the very best thing you can do is set expectations ahead of time. One excellent, however by no means foolproof, solution? If you’re utilizing Slack or Google Hangouts, set a status message that informs your colleagues you’ve stepped away and when you’ll be back. In Slack, click the down arrow by your name (upper left corner) and select “Edit Status.”
In the interest of openness: I composed this column not in your home however at The Wall Street Journal head office– where my toenails may or may not have also been clipped. Don’t forget to send me your WFH gripes or helpful tips.

Traveler’s Choice: Tech Gadgets to Pack
You need something small and functional to help you enjoy yourself while you are away. Whether you are a solo traveler or starting a group vacation, some of these travel gadgets may help to improve the traveling experience for you and your companions.
Stayed Powered Up! Image courtesy of https://ift.tt/33mnsxt
A Power Bank
Since we are combining tech and travel, the first thing on our list is a no-brainer. In order to keep all of your gadgets and pieces of equipment up and running, you will need a way of energizing them. This is why you need a power bank. There are a lot of them available on the market, but you need to find the one which best suits your needs. I have done some work for you and I can recommend either a Skyroam Solis device or an Energi Pro Power backpack. The Skyroam Solis device is not only a power bank, which was what you initially needed, but it is also a Wi-Fi hotspot. It is available for a small fee and it will help you stay connected in over 100 countries worldwide. When it comes to the backpack, a good thing is that it is a water-proof bag which can fit a 15’ laptop. This is something anyone would find useful. However, it is also a very powerful power bank and you can use it to charge up to three devices at the same time. Power up with these Power Banks  from Amazon.
Keep Your Belongings Safe
When I say safe, I mean not lost. Make sure you know whereabouts of your valuable belongings by using a Bluetooth finder. The device pairs up with an app which you can use to ring your precious item whenever you cannot locate it. This can come in very handy when you are in a rush to set off or when you are juggling several bags at the same time and you need to know exactly where something is.
A Portable HD
A portable HD will come in handy to all of those who like taking photos and recordings. Depending on the length and the type of your trip, you may need more storage memory than what you have on your phone or a laptop. Doctor On-The-Go
There are a lot of people who enjoy traveling but have a health condition which requires constant monitoring. This could interfere with their holiday plans. Luckily for us, smart people have created portable devices which can measure blood pressure,  heart rate, sugar in the blood, and temperature.  However, there are those devices which have most of these functions and can be paired with an app on your phone and sent to your physician if needed. Isn’t that a cool gadget?
Purify Your Water
The difference in water quality can give you indigestion. In order to keep yourself healthy and safe from infections and possibly even save some money on bottled water, you can bring a water purifier with you. Some of them are quite convenient for the travelers. They use UV rays and they are a little bit bigger than a pen.

Q. You’re a well-known figure in the world of SEO, with years of hands-on experience under your belt. What’s more, you are a keynote speaker at many SEO conferences. However, there are probably loads of people who don’t know you: could you introduce yourself?
Sure – though I suspect my story is similar to many others in the industry!
I started out as a bedroom web developer many years ago, and became a bit obsessed about code quality, standards, accessibility, and so on. Tweaking titles, refining HTML, adding alt attributes, etc. I was doing technical SEO before I’d even heard of SEO, and I loved it.
My first exposure to ‘grown-up’ SEO was when I got a job at a digital marketing agency (I lucked my way through the interview with nothing but enthusiasm – thanks Ryan Scott), and then spent five years growing and leading a team of awesome marketers. We learned as we went when SEO was still a bit “wild west,” but we were always trying to be the good guys. We did some great work for some really big clients, and I’m proud of what we achieved.
More importantly, I learned a lot about business, strategy, and other technologies and channels.
From there, I’ve just kept learning. As SEO grows increasingly more ‘holistic’ and connected to other channels, I’ve kept pushing myself out of my comfort zone to learn new skills, embrace new ideas, and to grow as a person.
Q. What did you do at your previous employer, Distilled?
I was ‘Principal Consultant’ in the London office for just over a year, and it was a great time and experience. I’d wanted to work for Distilled for as long as I can remember – they were one of the big influences on my learning and thinking when I started out in the field – and they’re some of the smartest people I’ve met in the industry.
I did a bit of everything – mostly floating around the edges and tackling some of the more interesting, technical or complex briefs and projects which didn’t quite fit into the day-to-day flow of the agency.
Some of the most interesting projects ranged from owning and delivering enormous strategy pieces for big brands (“What should our five-year strategy be, to win the market?”), down to very technical stuff, like un-picking flakey Angular implementations across international, multi-domain, websites.
I’m already missing the team, and the kinds of projects which we worked on – but I’m excited to be doing something new!
Q. You know Joost de Valk quite a while, right? How did you meet and when did he offer you a job?
Embarrassingly, I was once very dismissive of both Joost and the Yoast SEO plugin in a conference talk about web performance, blaming both for making website owners ‘lazy’ when it comes to optimisation.
I think word got back to him, and it made for an interesting rivalry, where I was just some upstart SEO geek calling out a legend. Oops.
I’m still a little nervous that many users of the Yoast SEO plugin just turn it on and forget about it, and how many missed opportunities that represents, but that’s something we can tackle together!
So when I first met Joost in person at SEOktoberfest 2016, I was a little nervous! But we had a great time. And after the 2017 event, we got chatting about joining forces – it all happened pretty organically, mostly over Facebook messenger in the middle of the Christmas break!
Q. What are you going to do at Yoast?
I think we’ll mostly work it out as we go! I’m keen to roll my sleeves up and start to prototype and play with some features and functionality in the plugin. I still find myself getting frustrated with parts of the WordPress editing and management experiences, so it’ll be great to attack some of that from closer to the inside. Gutenberg’s pretty exciting, too, so I’m looking forward to exploring what we can achieve in a block-based world!
I’m also going to maintain strong links with the SEO industry. I’ve made a lot of friends at agencies, tool vendors and organizations who’ll be important allies as we continue to strive to make SEO more accessible and to raise the bar on technical SEO. I’m looking forward to speaking at a bunch of conferences, too!
Q. What are you hoping to achieve at Yoast?
I really love the core mission – SEO for everyone. I want to make the web a better place, to improve the quality, accessibility and performance of websites, and just to solve technical SEO. It still astounds me how many sites have basic faults, broken links, malformed HTML, and so on. I’ll be in a position to make a measurable improvement to the quality of millions of websites and to help all of those people perform better in search. That’s awesome.
Q. You are both a search strategist and a developer, not unlike Joost himself. What does this allow you to do?
I’m really uncreative. I have no dexterity. I can’t draw, kick a football, or hang a shelf.
But if you put me in front of a computer, I can dream in CSS. I can think in database structures. I can see in JavaScript. The web is where I can be creative, and I can make anything I can think of.
So joining up the ideation, strategy and business side to the development side lets me play. It’s incredibly liberating to be able to come up with an idea for a thing, to validate that it should work commercially/strategically, then to build a functioning, scalable proof of concept.
The drawback is, I’m a terrible finisher! I’ve piles of half-completed projects, where I’ve solved the problem in my head, but have got bored by the long-slog to the finishing line.
So it’ll be great to work with a team where I can do my bit, then let people who’re much better at rigorous, process-driven testing and development ship something complete!
Q. What’s your view on the current state of SEO and search in general? Which developments excite you? What should we look out for in the coming months?
I think that we’re finally starting to think beyond links, rankings and ranking factors. I’m seeing the spotlight gradually shifting to quality – conversations about rankings are talking about UX and brand/product quality, rather than links and click-through rates.
Google’s so close to having closed the gap on approximating and extrapolating ‘quality’ from link and site metrics, which means that improving that ‘quality’ means actually improving the thing you are/do/sell. That’s the kind of SEO I want to do and see.
That said, I’m also enjoying technical SEO becoming cool again. For a long time, ‘content marketing’ occluded technical SEO. But now performance, JavaScript and accessibility are just as commonly discussed – maybe more so – than content, links and ‘inbound’ stuff.
There’s so much more coming, too – the web itself is maturing and moving forwards, and SEOs will need to stay on top of the latest tech and trends. I’m excited to see more people talking about Progressive Web Apps, and some of Chrome’s newest toys (like server-side timings) are really neat!
Q. You also call yourself an amateur futurologist, so I have to ask this question: Are robots going to take over the world?
They already have! Your mobile phone already runs your life, increasingly your Alexa or Google Home will run your home, and there’s more to come. It’s no coincidence that all of the big global players are investing in machine learning, in-home devices, and mobile hardware.
I don’t think we need to be too scared, yet. We’re still a long way from any kind of Terminator scenario, and before we get to that, we’ll get some really neat stuff in scaled computation and processing.
Having said that, if I was a robot from the future wanting to take over the world, maybe I’d do it by flooding the internet with a powerful piece of distributed software, which everybody used and relied on. Then I could subvert it, and control the web. Maybe I’d call it “JonoPress.”
