I'm thinking of a conversation Dorothy could have with the lion after meeting him...

Lion: I-I'm so sorry I tried to scare you guys, I was just afraid that you would try and hurt me, o-o-or put me a cage.

Dorothy: Why would you think that?

Lion: W-well, because I'm a talking lion.

Dorothy: What's wrong with being a talking lion?

Lion: Oh.. right. I suppose you don't know 'cause you're not from here. But, here in Oz, people really hate talking animals.

Dorothy: Oh my! Why is that?

Lion: I don't know. There used to be talking animals everywhere in Oz, but then people started blaming animals for everything that went wrong, and they said animals should be seen, not heard. So now every talking animals gets caught and put in a cage until they can't talk anymore, and is nothing but a mindless animal.

Dorothy: That's horrible!

Lion: I know. I was in a cage once when I was a cup. I was so scared I couldn't talk at all.

Dorothy: Oh my god, how did you escape?

Lion: I can't quite remember. I suddenly got really sleepy, but then a young couple rescued me, I think. They took me for a ride and then set me free here in the forest. And I've lived here ever since.

Dorothy: Oh, well then it sounds like there are some nice people in Oz who doesn't hate talking animals.

Lion: Yeah, I wish I could remember them.

And meanwhile Scarecrow and Tin-man (Fiyero and Boq) overhears the conversation, Scarecrow thinking "Holy shit, that's the lion me and Elphie rescued?!" and Tin-man thinking "Wait, wasn't there a lion cup in a cage that day we all fell asleep?". And then they both exchange some concerning looks.
