COTTO: Made For Muay Thai
COTTO: Made For Muay Thai
Adapt Miguel Cotto’s Boxing To Your Muay Thai YouTube.com There is a world of difference between punching and boxing. Any man or woman with fists can throw a punch, but it takes years of training and strategy to say that you can box. Someone can be a big puncher – the vast majority of Dutch kick boxers can boast big punching power – but I would hesitate to call the majority of them “boxers.”…

What I Did Today
I got a lot of nerdy people really excited and very happy.
No, I didn’t show them pictures of Amy Acker and Sarah Shahi having sex. I just told them that Mongoose Traveller High Guard Second Edition just got an update that includes a section on belt mining.
And that, for some, is just as exhilarating.

So...how do I relationship? #2
I have this thing that when someone texts or calls me daily from morning til night for a month straight, I’d expect their calls/texts the next few days even when I try so hard not to get used to it or try not to initiate a conversation with them in the first place.

High guard
Since high guard is also a stance loved by many, it has many names. What I first heard of was “atlantion”, derived from the shield wall of Atlantia. Fighters can stand on a line with shields close together and still be able to both parry and hit with their swords.
Stand up straight
Take half a step forward with your left foot
Right foot points outward about 45 degrees to the right
Shields right corner is level with your left eye
Right hand over your right shoulder and just above your head
The tip of the sword rests gently on the top brim of your shield. In High guard you will not really be facing your opponent, but rather have him a little to your left side.
With this guard you try to parry shots to your head with your sword and you parry everything below that with your shield.
From this position it is very hard to deliver a good backhand blow. To make a backhand you would have to wind up getting enough force. Good thing is, there will be no tiny little spot between your shield and your helm on your left side for a blade to sneak in. I would go from a-frame to high guard by means of parrying a forehand when I really want to be sure nothing sneaks in there.
You can also lead with your right foot. I would suggest you put some weight on your right foot and make sure your head does not pop out between the sword and the shield. It might be easier to deliver a good backhand from this position.
I don’t use this position all that much, I think. Probably because I think I would be exposing my right side a lot. Using a frontal a-frame guard would still make it possible to sword block a forehand, but I’d go back to either a-frame frontal or a high guard with left or right foot leading.
A-frame and high guard are just descriptions of two extremes. You are not going to pick one or the other and stick to it. You may end up in them for lots of reasons, and there is also a whole range of in-betweens. It is a good thing to practice the extremes to see what happens to you and your opponents. In “the fight” you will probably shift a lot and use them for manipulation.

Quote
Because we have sought to cover up past evil, though it still persists, we have been powerless to check the new evil of today. Evil unchecked grows, Evil tolerated poisons the whole system. And because we have tolerated our past and present evils, international affairs are poisoned and law and justice have disappeared from them.
Jawaharlal Nehru
In a way Struggle for Balance is reaction to this quote and few others quotes by Nehru. Like today even in the future of SfB the evils of the past are trying to be covered without really dealing with them. This also leaves a big space for new evils to emerge, some directly emerging from the attempts to cover past evils. This tendency to cover where we did wrong in the past is natural. Today when it's easier to lie than to admit mistake, admitting wrongdoing is almost impossible. This creates a web of lies from which new evils that cover the old sprung up, but what is the worst is when you start believing those lies, when the fine line between the world of lies and reality is blurred. This will lead to wrong decisions being made (hence we can't control the new evils) and eventually will be disastrous. It will eventually have a response of some sort, because this is unsustainable. And one of those responses is High Guard.

Keep everything tight!
I had to blog about yesterday's class because I'm feeling very high right now about it. There were five of us, one green belt and the rest white. Naturally, I worked between both groups but not before I had to have Joe as my warm up partner so by the time we were learning things, I was very warm. We went over the double arm bar which was to be executed while in high guard (which I loved) and then tweaked it so we could easily transition from the double to a single if the opponent stood up. The best part of the class was when Joe put the green belt out on the mat and me! This means two things. He knows that out of the other 3 white belts, I have the most skill. Second, he realizes how hard I have been working which was confirmed later on. So basically, the green belt and I were on the mat the entire time while everyone else cycled through us. I did extremely and surprisingly well. We began with them in our guard and their job was to survive (and basically do anything) while ours was to submit. I worked the double arm bar on the bigger guy and tapped him out. Another skinnier guy came and I submitted him with a kimura. A few other times, I was able to get both of the opponents arms on the other side so their back was available but I was having trouble getting it. After the drill, class ended and Joe pulled me off to the side to show me how to take their back in that instance. He dragged my arm all the way over which I was doing but he secured the wrist AND the elbow which made it a lot easier for him to drive me to the ground so that he could easily take my back. He congratulated me on doing well in the drill and added that he was very impressed that I wasn't tired at all. He also noted that I came to the gym often. It's amazing how just a small talk can boost your confidence to 200% and make you feel awesome!

Using force, to gain what you want, is exhibition of weakness. Of weak mind and low intellect. It shows that you have no control over your body, instead the body controls you.
While doing research for my books I collect lot of quotes. It was very hard to really find the adequate to start this, but I have to start somewhere. I will always relate my quotes and their meaning to my universe Struggle for Balance. With quotes especially I'll talk about my stories and two main organizations which are followed in them. Those are High Guard and Grey Order. I'll talk about them more later. In this light, this quote is very important. Even though both organizations eventually become very powerful they on many occasion refuse to use force or even show it. There are many reasons for this, but mainly it's the content of this quote. To use force is for them to show a weakness. Also it would in most occasions contradict their principles. Force is to be used only to help or protect. Even then they are reluctant. They also know too well the implication of using their powers (military and other), not to mention how hard it then is to stop and constrain it, once it was released.
