Best friends to lovers is THE trope.

As a romance girly, I have much appreciation for most romance tropes. Enemies/rivals to lovers? Passionate, exciting, fun! Fake dating? The potential for accidental miscommunication gets me every time. Second chance romance? Angst!! (Not insta-love though, that trope rarely ever works for me). But god, there really is something so fucking delicious about friends to lovers.

Maybe it’s the fact that there is a foundation of trust and understanding before anything explicitly romantic occurs. Maybe it’s that there is shared history, which allows for inside jokes and a level of comfort with that person that doesn’t exist elsewhere. Maybe it’s the slow burn potential, having two people who deeply love each other slowly realize it’s more than just friendship (meanwhile their friends and outside observers think it’s incredibly obvious). MAYBE it’s because it feels so much more realistic than nearly every other trope.

It is a mix of all of the above, but honestly, I love it so much because it takes away the potential for surface level attraction. Enemies to lovers is an incredible trope when done well, but sometimes it falls prey to seeming more like a lust fueled attraction rather than a love meant to last (& we love lusty romance, but I personally prefer love that feels like it will last).

I also like that in friends to lovers, the angst seems to be higher stakes. If you get into a relationship with your best friend, will it ruin your friendship? How will that dynamic changing affect your other friends? How do the insecurities of being in a relationship manifest when you do it with someone you already deeply love and trust?

Anyway, I thought about all of this because I went through all of the ships I’ve loved in the last 5 years, and 78.5% of them are some variation of friends to lovers.

will's role in the party:

a scouter - stays back to watch over the area during runs w/his rifle and is a backup supply runner if need be. just prefers to scout with dustin and mike

medic - normally takes care of the group regarding injuries and medicine. is very gentle :)

the angel on mike's shoulder -> knows how to placate mike the best if mike's being unreasonable or too harsh

most knowledgable about the infection and how it works -> helps with understanding the patterns of infected people, what attracts infection, etc.

party mediator - rarely ever fights with anyone (mostly with mike haha) and is usually the person people most often go to for a vent or a rant

skills + hobbies:

best with a rifle + second best with guns! -> he practices a lot with lucas but refuses to kill animals

cook of the group along with el (taught her how to cook): rest of the party can make edible food but don't know how to make it taste good

great knowledge of plants and medicine -> jonathan and joyce taught him all they know about it (they are healers)

draws in a sketchbook that mike stole from another group for him: filled with mundane sketches from life and treats it like a daily journal

likes to collect cds and cassettes that he finds around to play in the car (him and max discuss music the most) - fave bands include system of a down, gorillaz, the clash and the cure :) he's an alt rock fan!

quirks / fun facts:

him and lucas have an ongoing competition that started with their aim and is now based on literally anything -> they've been keeping score since they were nine (lucas is currently up by ten and the points are in the thousands)

will shuffles different music in the car and observes who in the party likes what so he can make his own little mental playlists for them!

him and dustin talk a lot about how the infection works. they have some very intense debates about it, especially when it comes to if the infected still have human consciousness or not (will thinks they do, dustin thinks they don't)

--- other notes: canon will, in a short summary, is a very sweet, sensitive, empathetic and capable boy who consistently puts others needs before his own :') of course, i wanted apoc will to share those attributes, with a big emphasis on his empathy, strength, and kindness. first - i wanted him to be a medic to show how he cares about other people and how he helps the people he loves as well. it's shown a lot in the show how much he cares for people and living beings (see: his actions with dart, el, mike, feeling bad for jonathan's hand after he had just woken up, etc.) and him being a healer is very in tune with this behavior. will as a healer is very special to me :') and him learning this skill from his mom and his brother strengthens the theme of family also!

second - him being good with a hunting rifle was to showcase his quiet strength and capability (i'd also like to add that his dexterity on his dnd sheet is extremely high) -> he's a non-confrontational survivor. his strength shines from afar and is put on the backlight, but no one in the party thinks will is weak for his empathy. mike and lucas, in particular, are actually quite jealous of the fact that will is still able to see so much good in humanity and life while being so strong. of course, his connection to the upside down in st is mirrored in this au as well, where he has an innate understanding of how the infection works because of experience, observation and other story spoilers...

looking at the current poll results, it seems im going to be drawing lucas and max next :D see you for that!

okk so the main idea is basically an s5 scenario where Will and Mike are about to leave the UD — they’ve already confessed their feelings in the UD at this point. but remembering it’ll still be difficult for them when they return to Hawkins (considering it’s conservative smalltown indiana in the 80s, homophobia central woo, the shame IS on the other side hahaha…….🥲), they share a quiet moment before they go. partially inspired off the jancy forehead touch moment in s3’s finale.

also I can just imagine some of the Hawkins crew waiting for them and being clueless af like: “??? what’s taking them so long” (bonus if Steve’s holding the rope and is like: “whatever you lil shits are doing you better speed it up cuz my hands hurt…”)

I think Byler hits so different as a ship because of how damn unlikely the circumstances are and also because the stakes are so high. Like, in what universe do you fall in love with your best friend over the course of ten years? And in what universe can you expect that love to be reciprocated? To feel those feelings and that love about someone you know so deeply must be terrifying, as is the idea of them rejecting you, which would be devastating but also fully expected.

Add onto that the fact that they are both gay in a time where being gay was taboo and just not seen as a genuine option. Mike and Will are hopelessly, desperately in love with each other—with their own best friends—and they both believe that this friendship that is so important to them comes under threat because of the love. Like, both boys probably partially resent themselves for even putting their relationship at risk by daring to have feelings for each other.

It’s so damn unlikely to have a slowburn romance with your best friend over the course of a lifetime. It’s even more unlikely for your best friend to reciprocate your feelings. It is the most unlikely thing of all for your seemingly straight best friend to surprise you by revealing that they are gay too and that they’re in love with you. Like… can you even imagine how intense it will be for Mike and Will to realize all of this in the span of a few seconds? They’re both banking on rejection and that their love is an impossibility. But in one swift kiss or confession, the truth will come out and the weight on both of their shoulders will be lifted.

Also, I simply can’t imagine how intense it would be to know that your best friend who you’ve been in love with as long as you can remember is in love with you back. It’s almost too good, too fantastic to be true even for straight couples and even for people in real life. Like, the reality is that most of us can’t even fathom how intense a love like that would be. It’s truly a once in a lifetime, romance of the century kind of thing. Add onto that the fact that neither Mike nor Will knows that the other is gay let alone reciprocates. The moment they realize will be so intense that I’m all out of words to use to be able to describe it. It will be indescribable.
