Something i don't know how ppl still dont understad is how OBVIOUS it is that no Mark is gonna outtake the other, no love (neither for Gemma nor Helly) is gonna outgrow the other. And it's not only a matter of if that is possible (it is, its a tv show) it's a matter of narrative and thematic ideas.

The writers have briliantly gave Mark and Gemma a 5-year marriage and Mark s and Helly a half life relationship (because even if they are very young they have known each other for a huge portion of their concious life). This balances the stakes and validation for each Mark, and makes their battle so interesting, because they are literally equally deserving. And since they are equally deserving, having one of them "win" would be contradicting that claim. It doesn't matter if you as an individual have a preference, as liking one of the Marks more (hell, i myself like one of them more, that's human) but ethics dont work like that, ego death doesn't work like that either and obviously the show is trying to say that. This opens two crucial themes to discuss:

First things first, this impossible-winner situation is the fucking dramatic drive of the show. I wouldnt phrase it as Helly and Gemma because they're characters in their own right, but Mark's relationship with Helly and Gemma is there to represent a battle of the ego and conflicted desire. I really think the show chose to make this a romantic conflict because, yeah who doesn't love romance, but most importantly because we are so monogamous as a society that it was the clearest way to show how these two Marks are different people. We can't fathom the idea that you can love more than one person romantically at the same time (it doesn't matter if it's true, it's the predominant thought of our society). And i think they use this aknoledgement of how society works and they were so right to do so because look what everyone is talking about. That's why im so really shocked that some people are trying to bend the laws and philosophy of this show to theorize which Mark will win or which love will he choose at the end. Neither will, and both will. And simply because narratively, thematically, thats the only coherent choice. One of the Marks "winning" or Mark choosing completely either Helly or Gemma, would destroy the very points this show is trying to make. The love for Helly needs to be a rightful pushing force just as equal as the love for Gemma, just as Mark S needs to keep existing as a foil to Mark Scout. The show is trying to say that (to put this coloquially) doesn't matter how shitty or brief or undeserving your life is to a system or to others you are deserving of human rights, freedom and autonomy.

Which gets me to the second point: This goes both ways. Because even if Mark Scout belittles Mark S's experience, lumon did the same to him when they kidnapped Gemma and lured him into severance. They are both being used. After all, i very much think this is a postmodern show dealing with the residue of modern capitalism. This is a show about the problematic and complex relationship between revolution vs establishment. A modern show made in the past century would have framed this as a straight up victim vs victimizer problem but this is different. Capitalism creates this micro-power relationships. Corporations expoit the white collar worker and the white collar worker exploits the cleaning lady. And even if they are both clogs in a machine, the white collar worker and the cleaning lady may have different ideas on how a revolution should play out, or even if a revolution should occur in the first place. And sometimes revolutionaries can have disregard of the lower classes in the name of grater good. With all the shipping stuff (that i also fully enjoy) we forget that THIS is also the conflic that's taking place between Mark Scout and Mark S. Even if they clearly arent aware of all this shit at the moment.

Even so, they, again, are equally deserving of happiness and compensation. And to put Mark Scout in the position of opressor and opressed at the same time is amazing. They both need to win. But how can they both win? Will they both win? And how would a win-win situation look like? This is why i think severance really is something else. I'm at the edge of my seat because i don't have a fucking clue how they will resolve this. But i trust this show to be better than simply make him choose one of his loves or make one Mark overrule the other. They won't do that, mark (jk) my words. Both Marks need to truly work as one, to understad the other's struggle and see it as equally valid and well, negotiate. Just as the white collar worker will have to negotiate with the cleaning lady if they truly want to make an impact should a revolution actually happen. Both Marks need to understad they are not the real enemy and even more, that the real enemy is the cause of this friction in the first place, a friction that only diverges them from the real goal. Helly's and Gemma's love is only the cathalyst to put in motion this conflict. A GREAT choice because just as the Marks, they too will have ideas of their own on how to navigate this situation, yes, but they will also have a say in the innies vs outies vs lumon conflict and well i think these four are gonna surprise us.

Oh what you said responding to the ask about transphobia/bigotry I've been looking for the right way to describe it: hard to romanticize! Thats like the foundation of this fandom it seems. Everything is whitewashed and stripped down to its bare bones to be the most relatable and palatable shit! Complexity for this fandom is babying regulus and feeling bad because his brother (rightfully so) left home. Like cmon are we not capable of being deeper than that. We base everything on the most bland tropes like brother's best friend and grump x sunshine! Truly moving and deep literature explores people in 3d not the 2d shells of people that can be described in singular words/attributes that bastardize them and make them walking caricatures of people (eg; Marlene = lesbian, Mary = pretty, James = sunshine, remus = wolf, and so on) the best art isn't easily palatable! The movies that leave you feeling ill or uncomfortable (in the good way) for lack of a better word are usually some of the best films. I feel like even aside from the racism, sexism and other problems of that sort, this fandom just lacks depth? We gave ourselves full creative power over these characters and bastardized them and it makes me so sad. There are so many smart and deep people in this fandom and I wish their analysis and ideas about the fabdom were he more popular ones instead of the ones that are easy to romanticize. Let's see conflict, not everyone has to be friends, people can be complex and not completely bad or good. Make them have complicated relationships outside of ships. What are the odds of about 13 people (the most popular characters) ALL finding their soul mates in highschool??? Like u can have sm fun exploring these characters but noooooooo. i’m an actor. it’s my JOB to take characters from text, to see words on paper, usually ONLY dialogue and stage directions, and create a person, a fully fleshed person with wants and goals and fears and a soul. it’s my job to use the clues that the canon text provides and make the character pop out of the page, to make them compelling, to make them HUMAN.

i don’t want to read about plastic robots as they go through all the tired, stale tropes. grumpy x sunshine, enemies to lovers, best friends brother. it’s all the same. it’s a formula. it’s spoon feeding. i’m not trying to hate on people who enjoy it but i just can’t imagine being satisfied with that. the barest touch of the surface level when there’s so much if you go deeper. so much more HUMANITY. so much more meaning.

i saw an interview this morning where valentinos voice actor is asked about his characters relationship to the other vees and he briefly explains that vox and val in this weird gay relationship where they make out and do stuff but then straight up says "uhhhh i dont know what valentinos relationship is with velvet lol!"

the bar is in hell for women characters (pun intended) because a velvet USED to have a relationship with vox and val during the instagram days. i like that she was more like a daughter to him and that they bonded over violence! shit like that was what actually made valentino feel like a complex character who can be good and bad. because i literally cannot think of a single relationship hes on good terms with. voxvals whole appeal is that theyre toxic gay bitches! so having just ONE good relationship in his life, even if its just with his weird 30 year old coworker daughter, could actually make him feel like a person with layers like valentino fans desperately insist he is in the show.

since rn velvet just kind of. exists! she barely speaks to the other vees, doesn't seem to enjoy spending time with them unless she can film them dancing and making out, shes mostly frowning in the finale whenever vox opens his mouth, and never directly even speaks to val. why would val not speak to someone he lives (i think) and considers his equal?

like she very much has the ability to become a compelling fun character/villian when shes separated from the other vees. which sucks! because it just makes me wonder "would valentino or vox tangibly lose anything if velvet didnt work with them? and would anything change about their dynamic if she wasnt there?" and i know the answer is "probably not!"

the fact that no ones mentioned her despite s2 having a "heavier focus on the vees" is so fucking telling. she really doesnt feel like the backbone of the vees! she feels like the third wheel vox and val hired and she just stays with them for power despite her not speaking/having a relationship with them at all. its not even like the idea of "30 year old woman stops caring so much about her gay dads she created and slowly begins to resent them, working with them anyway for power" is a terrible idea, but i absolutely know thats not what viv intended. vel is absolutely an afterthought in the writing when shes with the other vees and its apart of what makes me dislike them now more then ever. if s1 couldnt even have velvet speak to the other vees about ANYTHING other then important business stuff (like, idk, fashion, technology, love potions, the few fucking things these characters have in common) then i doubt s2 is gonna be much better.

I honestly cannot understand the people hating on your work. I feel like fandoms has been invaded by a wave of purity/moral policy that shouldn't exist anymore. it's even more wild to me knowing you're working on a greek myth, and the greek myths are KNOWN to have many versions. that's the beauty of them in my opinion, the way these authors all wrote their own versions and they passed them to us. I love the fact you picked Ganimedes, and you decided to explore both Zeus and him. And the mystery you keep about your relationship really makes me wonder which take you will follow!

and speaking of take, I really enjoy yours on Zeus. Gods are complex beings, and sure they're problematic (like duh) and bad, and everything but it's funny how people will decide which pick for who. Like everybody love Poseidon but oh boy, he can be as bad as Zeus people. So yeah, I am actually excited to read the way you're gonna write him! I don't hate Zeus, sure he does seem one of the "worse" when reading most of the myths, but my favorite thing is the way you can love one god in one story, and hate him in another. they're immortal beings. they're not just black and white. so I happen to enjoy when authors write Zeus as more than just a big bad villain. But I also enjoy when they just don't make him a "sweet lovely daddy".

About the hate... People re affraid (artists have to much power kkkkk) and we live in a time that you need to share your opnion to get validation. In my case, they need to say that Zeus is bad and hate on him and me so they know they re on the rigth side and have good morals. And even after all this, I think its a good thing they just warning people, that way I can get to my real target that can enjoy characters more complex that re not good or evil, but mess up beings (that includes Ganimedes). And even if people in the end critizied my aproach, its also fine, I dont claim to be perfect and just hope that even to the mad ones, they feel inspired to create their version as well. I think they forgot that, like, they can have their version and will be as valid as mine, dosent matter the story.

(I really enjoy everything about Ganymede, if people go and do their versions, its a plus to me! More about him is best for me heheh. tbh i don't know a great lot about harry potter, at least not canonically lol i watched a few of the films when they came out but i never really got into the books. the only reason i know a bit about the world is because i used to read hp fanfics and searched up stuff on the wiki to know what they mean lmao

wednesday is prob ravenclaw or slytherin and enid is prob gryffindor or hugglepuff 🤷‍♀️ (pls dont come at me if this doesn't sound right to you, i never fully understood the housing characteristics ☠️)

larissa is ofc the headmaster

marilyn is the herbology professor

it'd be fun if pugsley is also at hogwarts, so we can see wednesday's protective side over him as well as him bonding with enid

thing is wednesday's pet/familiar - either as his normal hand form or like re-characterised as an owl or cat idk

with enid, she could either be the least magical one in her fam so there's the complex where she doesn't feel good enough and wednesday eventually makes her feel better yada yada OR in reverse, maybe she's from a muggle family so then she's distanced from her fam OR she's a squib so then the au would have to exist somewhere in the magical world outside of hogwarts lol

with wednesday, she can either hate hogwarts (similar to the show where she didn't want to go and because of her issues with morticia) or she can be indifferent and just be chilling

then there's also a few specific plot ideas:

Hogwarts AU

i'm trying to think of student/student aus but nothing jumps out to me besides enid as a quidditch star and wednesday as the head girl and they clash or something

maybe tyler is head boy and ajax is also a quidditch star for his house for some het drama idk

Teacher AU

what might be interesting with older wenclair is a teacher au where wednesday teaches DADA and enid teaches muggle studies or is the flying instructor idk

then their students ship them or something and try to play matchmaker

or if it's a one shot, maybe they're in a secret relationship and no one guesses they're together until the end

Azkaban AU

maybe another interesting idea is if wednesday is a prisoner in azkaban and enid is an auror

i always hesitate with wenclair being in law enforcement in general (because acab) but if its an au, then we can pretend discrimination does not exist 😌

then maybe enid is looking into a case and she needs to question wednesday for stuff, but realises that wednesday was framed so she tries to find the truth or whatever to help free her

or enid could accidentally let wednesday out (maybe wednesday manages to take her wand or whatever) so enid has to chase her and it'll be like a crime drama/killing eve situation, but with a big fat happy lesbian ending instead 🙄

or a goofier plot could be enid accidentally lets wednesday out and she tries to take her back, but it's not so serious and wednesday just easily escapes her time and time again in funny ways. like, enid can be trying to think strategically about where wednesday must be hiding after her escape, but then she simply bumps into wednesday just casually looking at books in a bookshop in hogsmeade, with no attempt to actually hide from enid because she's chill

Arranged Marriage/Slave AU

oh boy, for a more toxic plot (i'm sure this must already exist) maybe something like how it's after the war and they're on opposite sides and the death eaters won

wednesday's a death eater, enid's in the order of the phoenix, and then enid gets gifted to wednesday as a slave/wife or whatever 🌚

either it's someone's cruel idea to gift to wednesday, or there's some kind of arranged marriage system in place to match purebloods together so more purebloods can be created because of all the racism etc idk

Enemies to Lovers AU

for a more fun, reversed plot, maybe something like wednesday is the equivalent of voldemort and enid is the equivalent of hp so then they're enemies to lovers

but like, without the age gap lol (or with the age gap if that floats your boat) and also like...without the beginning bit of trying to kill the chosen one as a baby because that'd be a bit of a weird start lol

but this sounds like a real fun one because enid, yoko and divina could be the golden trio

anyway oops, it somehow turned into a brainstorming session/dump and now you prob see why i end up with so many wips 😆 but to come back from the derailing and to answer your original q about what my au would look like - i would prob pick the enemies to lovers one to write cos it sounds quite interesting

I think initially, my question is, how do you balance the role of Valyria historically with the nature of their colonialism? Only because it seems like the picture presented is that ultimately Valyrianness is a good thing? It seemed like despite the Firstmen not wanting Valyrian conquerors who desecrated their land with fire, Harrenhal did? And that seems off to me? I mean if your pro-valyrian then totally disregard this but I had got the impression that you were rather critical of them but maybe I was conflating your critique of Viserys with your critique of Valyria and the Valyrian Freehold? Also, side note I very much enjoyed the complex relationship everyone had with Viserys and how it wasn't reconciled and that Helaena stood her ground. Your interpretation of her is my absolute favourite because she is a fully fleshed woman with her own motivations, and her distance from Rhaenyra is that wonderful icing on the cake. Coming from someone who doesn't like my own half-sister, it's very understandable Helaenas weariness but also her stubbornness not to forget what Rhaenyra put her and her brothers through. It's just chefs' kiss.

No that's a fair question! Ultimately, I think my answer is that my opinion on morality of canon is separate from what I choose to play around with for fun. For example, I don't think we're meant to read ASoIaF and come away like "yes monarchy is good actually." I'm very anti-monarchist in my everyday life, but it's tons of fun to lean into the grand imagery related to monarchy and divine right in a fantasy world. This applies to the themes of colonialism and feudalism as well.

Stormbreak is, fundamentally, a Targaryen Restoration fic, so it's not going to be doing any heavy lifting related to concepts of monarchy, feudalism, and colonialism. I do address parts of these themes, but not in full, and it shouldn't be taken as a perfect mirror of my own views outside of the Stormbreak sandbox.

As for Harrenhal--I think there isn't necessarily a moral endorsement of the Valyrian magic there. Just because something exists doesn't mean that it's good that it exists, but it is a reality. Jace's Valyrian-ness is useful in its ability to protect the members of House Strong from a curse that would otherwise kill them off. Jace's arc here also isn't finished, and we haven't seen the final form of the agreement(s) he'll have with the land he rules. This is because the First Men are, you guessed it, also originally colonizers! They invaded Westeros, slaughtered the children of the forest in spades, and destroyed their sacred spaces. They were eventually forced to stop and coexist, but only after a massive display of force (the children of the forest literally broke Westeros and Essos into two separate continents), so it wasn't out of realization that their colonizing was wrong, and they still successfully stole most of Westeros from the children of the forest, relegating them to small patches of land here and there where Weirwood trees grew. I can't spoil too much here, but let's just say the Valyrians weren't the first ones to think of imbuing the land with spells to drive out the First Men… and that Stormbreak will ultimately treat the children of the forest as the only true natives of Westeros.

I'm glad that Helaena's characterization has resonated with you! She's been so fun to write. In general, I've had so much fun with the female characters in this fic, particularly ones like Helaena, Baela, and Alys whose personalities were kind of neglected in the book and/or the show. I also have this pet peeve around the idea that women inherently always have to like each other because of girlboss solidarity, so I deliberately called attention to Rhaenyra's mistake in thinking that Helaena would side with her because they were both women. Helaena isn't necessarily always going to agree with Rhaenyra on things, which is understandable. They had vastly different upbringings, and Helaena's experience with dreaming gives her an entirely unique perspective. In this chapter, Helaena doesn't try to stop Aemond and Aegon, because she agrees with them! Regardless of how much fear she personally felt (since I think her dreams provide a lot of reassurance to her that others aren't able to access), she still spent her entire life surrounded by her family, who were very much impacted by that fear.

I'm glad you can feel so much regarding Rana! The whole point was to drive in the differences that the MC goes through that Rana doesn't. Call me cruel, but I tend to enjoy exaggerating certain aspects of broken/complex family dynamics and it made sense to add in a new child AKA Rana to the mix 😂

i suck at ranking things and don't enjoy it one bit because i don't do faves, im too fluid in my tastes and can't ever pick criteria but! let's try in no particular order

1. Kieta Hatsukoi

i think im in the habit of dropping things from my fave lists as time goes by and especially if they're well beloved by other people like "okay then I'll focus on this less talked about thing, my bby seems to be getting enough attention"; how and why I work that way im not sure but I do and by that logic kieta hatsukoi should not be on my list but it's an honorary member - I've watched it twice (with maybe a bit of skipping which is still a lot cause I don't really do rewatches) and I've read most of the manga. it's just so..easy to like, for a lack of a better phrase. it's inoffensive and suited to be a comfort piece of media in whichever form you decide to enjoy it (and it'd make an amazing anime, i guarantee people would be all over it)

the live adaptation also takes the events of the manga and mixes them around big time but it still makes sense and it keeps you a bit more on your toes when consuming the other version, whether you watch the show or read the manga first

it's also a show I've recommended passionately and I successfully made my then new acquaintance watch which I'm a bit smug about lmao

sweet characters, supportive friends, funny, light and warm 💖

2. The End of the World With You

this showwww, i dont know if i can call it a fave since i havent once come back to it, i dont feel the need to go watch compilations of my guys or anything and i acknowledge there were some elements i found a bit lacking but! it's amazing. idc, this show gave me proper complex relationship where i still end up rooting for a couple of people who were toxic towards each other and did nootttt know how to handle a relationship; the dynamic is compelling, the premise is interesting enough, there are heavy scenes and plot points but it is embedded with hope

it also helped me bond a bit with a mutual i like <3

i just am thankful for it existing out there in the world, it served fucked up relationship (that i root for wholeheartedly), sexy times, found family, amazing acting and it didnt have most of the chaos an apocalyptic piece would usually be dealing with

3. BL Drama no Shuen ni Narimashita: Crank Up Hen

listen. we're getting some pretty good jbls this year but i said this will be jbl of the year and i still think it's a solid nominee.

the romance is tooth-achingly sweet. the leads are adorable. the acting is perfect and manages to deliver the comedy very well. it's cute, it's fun, it knows exactly what it wants to achieve and works with its timeframe to do it. the side characters do not affect the plot negatively, the hurdles the couple needs to overcome do not feel excessive. if you happen to yell at them for being silly, it's lovingly. also we got more chemistry than i expected! and it was really good. it also set up an example for ''japanese actors working on bls'' (found the things like shooting promos and the portrayed bts process really fun) so now watching 25 ji Ajisaka de i can't help but think of this show

4. Utsukushii Kare

my relationship with this show suffers from the "enough people love it" thing as well, i think i rewatched it or skipped through the first season? and i enjoyed the second one as well but honestly it feels not only as if enough people love it but that they love it and get it way better than i do. i didnt watch the movie out of fear of having to say bye to my guys but i also feel more disconnected from it now. im sure its still a gem of a movie and im so so happy we got two seasons and a movie, the show and the cast deserve it!!

there is just so much beauty in their yearning for each other and the misunderstandings, the downright stupid decisions they make..they all just work in making this a neat story of love that blooms from something different, from worship and the desire to be seen and to be held and to be possesed. they're wild, i love them

5. Kinou Nani Tabeta?

this show i watched years before i got into bl and i didn't even know it was a bl when i started it lol, i was like "ohhh, theyre a couple? cool"

i rewatched the first season, watched the special and the movie, started the second season and kinda got stuck there, again with hte "i dont want to let them go"..and now ive lost momentum and ive got basically a whole season ahead (i started it when it was airing 😭)

these two love each other so much and support each other in every way that matters, my heart melts at every sweet gesture and even though the show portrays some real struggles they have to deal with, its still a very funny and light show. the best word to describe it would be "charming" - you see this couple's everyday life, you see how they came to be and what challenges they face, how they overcome them and you're left with no doubt in your mind they will grow old together, well loved and taken care of

now I wanted ti turn this into a top 10 but I felt like I was being disingenuous cause I can't overcome my need to talk about underrated shows rather than pick my faves..I can't make a faves list without turning it into a diverse recommendation list so I'll just. stop here.

trying to think of the sensation of getting lost in a character performance and how many actors dont mind committing to the craft in ways that might make them exposed because its for The Art. for example finn and noah may revel in this odd shared attraction and bleed for the thrill of it artistically as well as personally, and then the audience response more often than not just being like 'oooooh finn just wanted to kiss noah in the van scene which is why mike looks at will's lips' etc

if it turned out to be true that finn did indeed want to kiss noah (as well as doing his actual job lol), why do you think the audience considers this to be an 'oooooooh' moment rather than simply enjoying the artist's commitment to the craft? like... would it be so bad if they actually did want to kiss eachother irl? why do people act like that would be a crime or that they've sussed something out about the actors that somehow makes the work they do less meaningful?

You know, I'm not really sure. I think I've found people, speaking in general, do tend to view things as one or the other instead of the possibility of complexities at play. The scenes could call for specific direction and emotion, even the most minute details and micro expressions that benefit storyline and character - and the actor may also simultaneously be exhibiting feelings for their scene partner. Both can be true. It's more likely for both to be true than only irl feelings, to be honest. Filming allows a redo. If that wasn't the expression wanted in closeup, they can reshoot. But man and character can feel similar, that's true.

I think in this fandom, there's a lot of denial and self preservation at play. On different sides of the "fight" (I really hate ship wars). Breaking down the van scene. Those who support Mlvn - Finn only looked at Noah that way because it's a Finn moment, he's got secret feelings for Noah that bleed through since Mike is totally straight and completely aligned with El. Those who support Byler - they may also say oh that was all Finn with a crush, because it's a failsafe for them because they really like the idea of Byler but still don't believe it'll happen so they say stuff like that to downplay and self deprecate their belief and investment.

There's also flavors of people being so hard up about celebs, reading into relationships. It's so human! Observing two people in close proximity and wondering if something more could be there, understanding the closeness that happens from filming together. People who are so anti the concept of speculation and "gossip" they forget we're all people. It's ok. And then yet another angle, others who get weird about suspension of fantasy, being reminded that the show isn't actually happening, being reminded that the actors are playing the characters and Stranger Things being a TV show telling a story and not a documentary. I know the goal of any worthwhile media is to transport you and make you feel it's actually happening, but... logic also exists even if that upsets some viewers. Imagination vs. the craft of performing. But acknowledging ot being fiction and that reality bleeds into character portrayals or there being limits to the magic of cinema shouldn't make things less meaningful. Just because the camera captured Finn or Noah smiling at the other a certain way doesn't mean that wasn't also Mike or Will. Finn checking out Noah in a scene doesn't mean Mike wasn't also checking put Will. It was in the show, it was allowed to be in the show, it's part of the characters. A good piece of media will stand on it's own in fantasy and fiction and we don't have to question it or force ourselves to acknowledge reality. I think Stranger Things does a pretty good job.

I decided to share all my notes which im making on Egpytology with you guys because i dont know if im the only one but sometimes the info on egyptology is all over the place, so i hope you enjoy and after this one the next one will be about how the world was viewd in egpytian mythology: 

Maat which is also known as ma’at or mꜣꜥt in Egyptian it’s both a belief but also a Goddess, in both ways it signifies law, balance, harmony, morality, justice and peace. In Mythology maat was seen as the moral code for both humans and nature, you followed it if you wanted happiness and essentially life. Back then Egyptians saw Pharaohs as the human maintainers of maat because they were believed to have been the son of various deities so he would be their representative making sure maat was being followed throughout the kingdom. Maat as a belief was said to have been created at the creation of the world and it was a way to help the world identify chaos. There’s various deities that are gods of natrual forcees and the myths are supposed to represent how the world should be functioning and the reward of life itself. The earliest surviving evidence of Maat being the norm is from 2375BCE to 2345BCE in the Pyramid Texts of Unas in the Old Kingdom. Later on when goddess’s were paired with god’s hers was Thoth because their attributes were very similar but in some accounts Thoth was paired with Seshat the goddess of writing and measure. After her role in creation and stopping the world from turning into chaos she took a primary role in the Weighing of Hearts which happened in the Duat. Her feather would determine if a soul was worthy to reach paradise or not. From the 18th Dynasty Maat was also seen as the daughter of Ra which showed that the Pharaohs were believed to rule through her authority.

As a goddess Maat was the goddess of truth, harmony and justice. She was symbolised with wings on each arm or as a woman with an ostrich feather on her head. The meaning of the symbols are unclear in the myths but Shu who was considered her brother also wore them. Ra came from the primeaval mound of creation only when he set his daughter Maat into the place of  ‘isfet’ which means chaos. Kings then would inherit the duty of making sure she remained there and with Ra they were said to “live on Maat”. Ahkenaten emphasised it so much that his people viewed it as fantacism and intolerance. Some kings though incorperated Maat’s name into theirs with names like “Lords of Maat” or Meri-Maat (Beloved of Maat).

Maat as a principle told people to act with honor and truth in all situations including family, environment, community, nation and god. As a princple people think it was formed to meet the complex needs of the Egyptian state which welcomed people with conflicting interests. It was supposed to stop chaos and eventually even became Egyptian Law. Maat developed to a point that it embraced all aspects of existence, the relationship between consitutent parts, the cycle of the seasons, religious observations, good faith, honesty, truthfulness and social interactions. Ancient Egyptians had a deep need to have underlying holiness and unity within the universe and cosmic harmony was said to be achieved by correct public and ritual life set by Maat. Any disturbance of it was said to have consequences for not just the individual but for the kingdom as well. There’s also the concept of isfet which is of course chaos, lies and violence. There was also other principles added like following tradition, the importance of persuassion, impartiality(aka no prejudice in justice) and doing righteous actions. To Egyptians Maat bounded everything together in the universe. A passage from the Instruction of Ptanhotep presents Maat as follows:

“Maat is good and it’s worth lasting,

It has not been distrubed since the day of it’s creator,

Whereas he who transgresses its ordinance is punished.

It lies as a path in front of even of him who knows nothing.

Wrongdoing has never yet brought its venture to port.

It is true that evil may gain wealth but the strength of truth is that it lasts,

A man can say ‘it was the property of my father’.”

Not much is found in literature about how it was practiced in law other than Maat was there in spirit and from the 5th Dynasty onwards a vizer (a high ranking political advisor or minister) was called the Priest of Maat and even wore images of her to show they were responisble for justice. There’s also the Sebayt (pharanoic interpretations/literature) which later scholars and philosophers embodied concepts from and it was filled with spiritual texts on how common social and professional situations were dealt with and how each was best to be resolved or addressed in the spirit of Maat. It was very practical and case-based so only a few specific and general rule scould be derived from them. During the time the Greeks came to Egypt Greek law existed alongside Egyptian law which preserved the rights of women being allowed to be independent from men and own propery which also influenced the most restrive conventions of the Greeks and Romans.

Maat also had temples and the earliest one that was recorded was in the New Kingdom era from Amenhotep III in the Karnak complex and there is textual evidence that suggests other temples of Maat were around Memphis and Deir el-Medina. The temple in Karnak was also used by courts to meet to discuss the robberies of royal tombs during the rule of Ramesses IX. In the Papyrus of Ani (also known as The Coming Forth By Day) the lines were often collectively called the 42 declorations of purity where people would write down things to appease Maat and they thought through the power of writing down about how they did no wrongs in their life that it would wipe away anything wrong they did do away from their afterlife. It would also include their own personal practices in their lives to please Maat. The doctrine of Maat is represented in the declorations to Rekhti-Merti-f-ent-Maat and the 42 negative confessions listed in the papyrus of Ani.
