#i dont understand why tumblr does this to the quality

hi, about the yunjin starbucks controversy.

i’m gonna try to be as fair as possible talking about this controversy, but i’ll be honest i’m leaning more on yunjin’s side. i’ve been getting several requests on yunjin and i feel like i need to get this off my chest every time i see her name on my page.

let’s start off with the facts: yunjin was caught drinking starbucks in Korea (in front of the company building.)

I thought she drank it on a post or somethrong but no, it was just a few pixels of a low quality picture fans took. And that’s my first minor problem; she wasn’t on live, it wasn’t a post, it was a few milliseconds of pixels. But I get the ‘performative activism’ controversy, it DOES feel like she’s hiding it.

However, my take is that she just got out from her car, and wanna know a little fun fact? Most snacks and drinks that all idols are seen eating are most likely bought by their managers. And it’s a fact that Koreans aren’t currently boycotting Starbucks as actively as western foreigners are. So my thought the first time I saw the picture was that. The manager probably just bought coffee from whatever shop was closest, and handed it to her.

But I do understand how that can feel like reaching so I did some more research .

The biggest thing I have to so called ‘defend’ Yunjin is that Starbucks Korea is completely separate from International Starbucks (source: ChosunBiz).

In 2021, 67.5% of Starbucks was comepletely bought by E-Mart (a branch of Shinsegae), and the rest 32.5% was bought by a Singaporean investment comapny (GIC).

So oh, Starbucks Korea has no affiliations with the part of Starbucks that sues their worker’s union.

However, I can make the argument that Yunjin could influence others to ignore the boycott and buy Starbucks. Is it true that she has several international fans and alot of impressionable fans? Yes.

But then we have to go back to our first argument; it was a few milliseconds of a low quality video.

And after finding that out, I started to feel like all the people commenting about “starbucks queen💕” and “omg whats your starbucks order?” is the problem.

YOU guys are the one promoting Starbucks at this point. Do you understand?

I’m not saying don’t hold someone accountable, no, but I’m saying the comments aren’t fucking helping.

Don’t get me wrong, I do live in Korea, and I have been actively avoiding purchasing from them because I saw a few posts on twitter referencing it. I based an activity on a twitter post. And wanna know when I figured out WHY I was supposed to boycott exactly?

After I deleted Twitter because of the stress I got from the app.

That’s when I finally found out about the BDS list, found out oh, Puma is on the list, McDonalds is an even bigger problem than Starbucks (directly supplying food to soldiers), HP APPARENTLY SUPPLIES TECH FOR THE ISRAEL GOVERNMENT, and oh wow! Starbucks isn’t even on the list because theres not enough proof that they financially fund Israel.

In conclusion, the people preaching about how Yunjin is a performative activist is such hypocrites themselves

It’s clear that while some of the comments and criticisms are genuine, trying to hold a person accountable, but its also clear that the repeat of the same mocking comments of Yunjin is just performative and for attention and likes.

That’s what pisses me off. People who don’t give a shit about Palestine, and people even if they do support Palestine not even doinng the bare minimum amount of research just having fun mocking (not criticizing) a person when a tiny bit of wrong doing is shown.

Please, go look in the mirror, and i dont like saying this but go touch grass, do your own research, dont base off your whole ideology on a reddit post or a twitter, tumblr post, read different variety of news articles from several companies, and THEN make your decision on a situation. Not only Starbucks, not only on Yunjin, but on several other ones too.

idk if this was a "popular" post or anything, but this is in reference to a post someone made complaining about how "it's hard to find decent new stuff that isn’t just another smau full of poorly written characters that are nothing like their original personalities." and then they list examples of stereotypes that writers often associate with certain characters.

everyone's entitled to their own opinion, and people have the right to complain about things they don't like. i don't necessarily agree with them but I see why she and a lot of other people would think this way.

the problem I have is that she purposefully uses popular fandom tags on her post. #tokyo rev x reader #jujutsu kaisen #genshin impact, etc-- and of course this would reach writers. i could understand this if he was providing a critique, but this was a complaint (and again there's nothing wrong with complaining)

in an edit of their post, they say that being a blank blog "doesn't mean that they can't give criticism as a reader" which ig isn't wrong, but him complaining about not finding good fics while simultaneously not supporting and sharing the ones he thinks are good doesn't help his point.

people have said this in the reblogs of her post, but you can always tell when someone isn't a writer, or at the very least-- doesn't put themselves in a fanfic writers shoes (imo). people write fanfic for fun, they're not looking for "critique" (unless they ask), and they definitely don't want to go to fandom tags, find a person saying they think that the quality of tumblr writing has declined to wattpad level-- and get insecure of their writing and their smaus

i dont write smut or smaus (but I do plan to), so this post isn't rly targeted towards me. but I am a fanfic writer who does this for fun :) I can only imagine how much it would suck if someone said this but replaced the 'smut part' with a trope I commonly write/associate with a character.

i dont exactly know what the point of this post I wrote, but I know it ends with a psa: you have every right to complain about stuff you don't like, but it shouldn't be at the cost of other people's enjoyment in the fandom. complain, but either tag appropriately or don't tag at all.

so um, you’ve probably have been asked this many times but how do you start writing fanfic without cringing at yourself? i already feel silly for reading it. i noticed you have gained recognition outside of tumblr which i believe to be an achievement but i can’t allow myself to go through that.

honestly at first i DID cringe at myself. i cringed so much that after posting my first fic in like november i dont think i posted again til january because i was writing and would just get so humiliated despite being alone and no one knowing who i was or what i was doing LOL but honestly the way i got over that was just to do it more because i truly love writing and why would i let feeling “cringe” stop me from doing something i love and that makes me happy? that would be so heartbreaking, life is hard enough, we deserve to do things we love and are passionate about without judging ourselves so harshly

as for not letting other people know well yeah i just don’t tell my friends or anyone ik in real life that i write fanfic lol, they know i love to write and they know im obsessed with spencer reid but that’s as much as i’ve told them! i know it’s a thing that maybe most people would consider “weird” but as someone who has a crushing fear of intimacy this is kinda my outlet lmfao. and it made me feel really insecure and weird at first but then i realized like… i try to be kind and caring and thoughtful, i have a lot of good qualities and the fact that i write fanfic doesn’t actually detract from any of them. it also helped for me to accept the reason why i write fanfic which is (and we’re abt to get real personal) i’m deeply afraid of intimacy of any kind and always have been so writing fiction abt the stuff i’m too scared to do isn’t a bad thing. there are a lot of people who wouldn’t understand it but they don’t have the same experiences as me and i don’t need them to understand it because i know that they never could. like they don’t understand what it’s like to so terrified of being known by another person that you obsess over the hottest guy in your school district for six months bc you want the validation of him liking you back and you do everything in your power to make him like you and then when he actually does reciprocate you immediately start icing him out to the point where he says hi at a party and you ignore him to his face cause you’re so afraid of men😂😂😂😂😂 they don’t get those vibes!!!

anyway basically you just have to remember that you’re doing it for you and it actually doesn’t mean something is WRONG with you if you enjoy writing and the safety and control that fiction offers you. it just means you’re one of billions of people living an entirely unique experience, just like anyone else, and honestly i think it makes you interesting. having hobbies and passions is rlly sexy and cool, regardless of what they are, and you deserve to do stuff you like doing. if anyone else is giving you shit abt it it’s probably because they genuinely don’t understand what it’s like to have interests and that makes me feel bad for them lol

In this essay, i will explain the reasons why sky children of the light has become an increasingly unwelcoming game to new players and veterans alike-

Yeah yeah i usually only share my words here but tumblr feels like a really comfy place for me to share unfiltered thoughts and i needed somewhere to vent ig (skip if you have no idea what I'm talking about)

When I first started playing in prophecy, sky was a really fun game. We didn't have the request for a guide function then and I'm actually really grateful for it because the joy was in exploring each of the different realms and season areas on my own and randomly stumbling across spirits whose stories were waiting for me to discover. Maybe it was because I was a dumb moth - i didn't even know how to access seasonal spirits trees - but the pressure to cr just wasn't as intense as it is for moths today. The back to back seasons and "days of" events seem to have sucked the fun of exploring the world of sky for moths because they're so focused on grinding for candles/hearts/event currency that they just dont slow to smell the in-game roses anymore. And the thing is I get it because there's just so many new cosmetics as well as older ones from past seasons and events to farm for.

I mean sure you don't have to collect every cosmetic but 1 cape costs like 70 candles on average, same for a pair of pants iirc, a prop/acessory at 40-70 candles (70 if its an instrument??) , and hair at around 40-50 candles; and the best part is you can only earn 20-21 candles max in 1 reset 🤡 Add all of that plus the need to look for event currency in fear of facing such prices in the event rerun and you get stressed out moths facing existential crises every 2 weeks when ts arrives😀 Sorry moths, the economy is bad irl and just as bad in sky.

And what of the veterans? Yeah, well, we get no friends as everyone starts to quit the game and those that stay live off copium revisiting the places we once visited with friends- Or maybe that's just me

New friends, you say? *cue flashback to moths begging for help with cr* we exchanged like maybe 5 sentences max at chat benches🥲 i have nothing against helping out but it does make it difficult to form a bond when they disappear right after and you fade into their constellation of ubers

And then we have the seasons.

Passage - ??? Havent finished this season's quests so uh- so far it seems like... a cult..? In isle...?

Moments - if they wanted a camera in-game, they could have just added it to like the days of sunlight event (the camping one) or smtg. They did not have to force a season for a camera💀 imho the camera was the only thing worth mentioning abt this season and i don't even take pictures

Revival - i suppose aviary is pretty and it's nice that the spirits have somewhere to stay now. Not particularly impressed. Don't really remember the story in this one.

The quality of "days of" events is still acceptable to me. Just maybe ignore the numerous iaps and the fact that we have multiple umbrellas but only 1 is f2p (don't understand whats up w that btw)

And also the recurring bugs💀 I've been playing for at least 3 years and I've faced these bugs/problems multiple times:

1. Unable to light frends constellations because the screen just yeets itself into oblivion or some random environment feature where i cant press the button

2. Game crashes (after every update istg-)

3. Splitting servers

4. Sky discrimination and gate keeping, aka refusing to let me open the game

5. Being unable to collect currency/dailies (it's not my internet i checked)

The lack of compensation is another matter entirely

I don't know man I'm tired. The only reason why I still have it installed is because it's my only link to the people I used to have fun and relax with. Not everyone has discord or insta or some other social media.

I have recently been reading about self-insert characters to aid my own writing. I found this:

You can tell when someone is writing a self-insert because when you ask them what the flaw is they'll say something like "He's too perfect," or "She's too nice." Those aren't dramatic flaws, and they're not capable of driving a story forward. It needs to be a serious flaw that causes him or her massive problems and that he or she must need to solve by the end.

And it immediately made me think of like shakespeare or someone big and dramatic who obviously poured love into their stories but also wrote intense tragedies and all range of human emotions. and it got me thinking of will, who is often described by fandom as perfect or an angel or can do nothing wrong, and it always makes me do a silly little confused face. why do people want see will as perfect? he's lovely, sweet, and even his flaws get washed over or glamorised. but as a character his flaws are what make him not only interesting, but essential to drive this story forward, as the above said. i would say will's main flaws include his low self-esteem, his tendency to put others before himself at the wrong time, and perhaps his catty jealous streak.

but the interesting thing about flaws is that they change with context. jealousy isnt intrinsically bad, but human. and sometimes these qualities can be useful instead of damaging - will's selflessness can do wonderful things, but it can also do bad things. but thats the whole point of the nuance of the human experience! if will is perfect, he cannot grow and there is no story.

i think fandom does a strange thing which is to wash everything over in absolutes, making them black and white, which is also funny re: this show because it's trying so hard to tell you that there is no absolutes in real life. will is perfect and can do no wrong simply because a fan likes him! i see very few people admire will as human rather than angelic. mike on the other hand gets a lot of defenders who aim to justify his 'bad' behaviour, but why does it need justification? it's human. i cannot understand the need for people to be perfect. i love a real, rounded, flawed character - and they dont need to be a villain whose evil antics we admire either. just a normal person.

as relates to writing self-inserts, the author who does this undermines how much they need to make an audience care about the character as much as they do. ofc the author already cares; the character is basically them! but why should we, the audience, care?

Nodding along to this because I too love all parts and sides of will byers and mike wheeler.

I know I definitely talk about will as an angel and perfect etc, but it's very much cuteness aggression and exaggeration brought on by the love I have for him, not a blindness to the layers he has. I think it's the same case for many who say the same thing, but there are 100% the people you're talking about who - as happens often in this fandom - take the lighthearted jokes/comments and start to believe them, and now think will can't have flaws or else he'll be immediately hated on by people who don't like him.

I think the most silly, unimportant frustrating instances of it are the times people would vote on twt/tumblr polls where mike should so clearly be the winner, but will wins because "will can do no wrong!!! I believe mike is an idiot loser and so I don't believe he is capable!!!". Like I am begging you to let will fucking suck at something. because he does! and I love him or it! he is human!

^ that's more in canon traits than the actual personality traits you mentioned in your ask, but I feel it's in the same vein. I love his occasional cattiness, I understand his self-sacrificial nature and look forward to how that'll grow next season, etc. watching will byers finally choose to live is going to be amazing.

mike on the other hand I find full of his own layers. There are multiple ways people view mike, but two I find interesting are a) what you present here and how they're his flaws that make him interesting, and b) his behavior is due to grief/ptsd/his conflict with his sexuality and not his true self. I somehow think both are true at the same time lol? Like in times of hardship, this behavior is what he turns to and that is considered flawed or unregulated! Just like will's pulling away and suffering in silence (low self-esteem) can be worked through, but is valid as a flaw.

babying queer media absolutely does not come into play, i would say it’s the exact opposite actually! i have seen both middling safe queer media and transgressive freakshit (affectionate) queer media stomped into the ground because they didn’t “do it right.” a great majority of the people who do this specific kind of “criticism” DO NOT like the thing they’re criticizing, have not engaged with it in good faith, and simply want to feel better about themselves by pretending they’re rallying for queer rights by calling out the bad, evil queers who are being Gay in the Wrong Way

I guess let me try to clarify what I understood about what you said?

If you're arguing that people make bad faith arguments to try morally justify and canonize their tastes and why Their Thing is good and That Other Thing is bad, I completely agree, but that is a separate issue. It's not really a "people are harsh on gay media" thing that is a "the internet is addicted to virtue signaling and moral grandstanding" thing. So yeah, people can be unfairly critical of gay media by using bullshit bad faith arguments/criticism.

But on that note, the blade cuts both ways - I've seen a LOT of "you should consume this because it's gay" on the internet regardless of quality, with the unspoken understanding that it being queer must mean that it is "good". MUCH more of that, in fact, than the opposite - especially on tumblr.

It sounds like you and I fundamentally dont agree on that last point: I do happen to think queer media is especially babied on the internet/tumblr, and you say you think the opposite is true. So this might be a difference in the crowds we run or what we consider good/babying/etc, or maybe even what we consider legitimate criticism.

Whatever it is, it seems our life experiences seem to be at odds here, so it might be fueling whatever misunderstanding we might be having. I think there are assumptions you are making (and vice-versa) that I simply do not hold true in my understanding of reality.

So. Haven't posted in a while. Man. Life. First things first. College! I'm in college! LFGGGG Even better, I'm dorming!!!! I feel so much better now to be honest. I'm eating better, getting out more(though im not like 'physically active' yet) and just living more. But well, I'm still to scared to go bar hopping and shit. Happy I get to write that detail down here, that I didn't forget it. What else. I'm studying computer science. Funny story, I tried looking up job sites for internships(I know I'm still first year but you know shoot your shot!!!!!) and learned that there are a lot of web development related jobs. Guess I know what to study. Also!!!! Posted the first chapter of my story on royal road. First draft, completely unpolished, literally haven't done any worldbuilding or anything yet but I wanted to just force myself to write and post something. I did, but I kinda forgot to update on it. Shiet. But at least its something!!!!!! Reading Spivak's calculus as well. Might start writing shit about it actually. Were having precalculus this sem and since I basically had calculus already during high school wanted to read something more rigorous since I'm basically just cruising through math. Still at the prologue(funny how theres a prologue to a math textbook) and, well, I guess it's cool? I don't really understand why I had to learn this, like if its just a way of gently introducing adult math stuff like proofs or if the properties and facts(theorems?) will actually come into play. a lot of things can be said abt tiktok and why using it is insufferable at times but honestly the most annoying and frustrating part for me is the seemingly pervasive issue of the userbase just not understanding or misunderstanding specific concepts they will then not shut up about it

its not like this wasn’t/isn’t an issue on tumblr and twitter and other forms of social media before it. its just that by nature of these websites the misunderstandings could only go so far, remaining in more insular communities or was about larger and more complex social issues the general public also has trouble actually understanding (like cultural appropriation)

on tiktok though it is like. basically impossible to correct misinformation on a wide scale. its all short form content, super fast paced, limited video length and limited characters in comments. even if you DO managed to correct it, you’ll be limited by the reach of your video and there will inevitably be x5 people showing up to say you’re wrong because another creator told them so. and because of how algorithmically based and short form it is this can replicate extremely fast and ends up working out in practice like a game of telephone. corrections also garner more engagement and thus, misunderstandings or deliberately misrepresenting a point become rewarded allowing them to spread even further where as on tumblr someone would call you an idiot and you’d get like 3 notes before being lost into the blue abyss.

this can be about anything btw. it can be about recognizing asian fetishization to fundamentally not understanding how dropshipping works and how to recognize it. all explanations start and end with “someone told me this was bad and let me make this all about me”

to use dropshipping as an example: dropshipping is basically operating as a middleman. they don’t keep stock of products they own, they essentially take money from the consumer, buy the product for them, and then have it shipped from the manufacturer’s warehouse to the customer directly without ever having to keep and store the products themselves. this can and often does result in scummy practices, and people wildly overcharging for frankly cheap goods you can get at a fraction of the cost very easily. but instead of learning how to recognize dropshippers, how the business model operates, and why its bad, some people have instead learned “dropshipping is when someone overcharges for goods i don’t think are worth it. selling candles with custom labels? obvious dropshipper”. so they harass candle makers because they have learned high prices they dont think are worth it=dropshipper. they can’t explain why else they have a problem with dropshipping beyond wanting items for cheaper and someone told them it was bad. they don’t really understand or care about the lack of quality control, oversaturation of the market, and often stolen designs. and making personal attacks against a seller is rewarded with engagement and ends up encouraging others to do the same

obv by nature of the algorithm this is not the case of every tiktok bubble either. but it seems every time i wander away from very specific spheres of interest this is what always smacks me in the face an annoys me. misinformation is so easy to spread on tiktok so long as you can frame it correctly. its like kony 2012 but in slightly smaller doses over and over and no one learns a lesson from it

i heard from two of my best friends !! one is busy w university but doing well, and it was lovely to hear from her !! the other has been super understanding abt my own busy schedule & always makes me smile ✨

i finally had the time to do some spreads in my new bujo that arrived this week !! i don’t think i’ve gotten the hang of editing pics yet tho :’’)

How do you make gifs? Care to share your process? o3o

oooh yes i can!!! i tried not to get too detailed with it since im interpreting this as just asking for my process rather than an actual tutorial sudhf.

the general tools i use are photoshop (i pay $10 a month T_T), vlc media player, and one of my various video downloading sites. i don't torrent or anything bc that scares me and i dont understand it. plus, since i almost exclusively gif kdramas the video uploads are generally in pretty decent quality and dont get scrubbed from the web the way western shows do.

so once i have the video downloaded i open it with vlc media player. I use a really inefficient method to extract frames but it works well enough that i don't really care to change it. plus i cant really figure out another way? they say that certain video programs can capture frames for you but none of the ones ive tried seem to have that feature. there's also supposedly another method to do it in vlc media player but it's never worked for me. anyway.

so to extract frames in vlc i find the moment i want to capture and then use the "e" hotkey to skip to the next frame and click the little screenshot button to capture it.

i do this over and over at lightning speed until I get all the frames i want. yes this does often lead to accidentally skipping frames (which can make the gif a little choppy) so sometimes i redo it, but sometimes i don't bother.

after i've captured the frames, i copy them from my pictures folder (not entirely sure why they end up there but im not going to mess with the pathway) to a specific folder ive created for that gif or gifset.

then I'll go through and make sure there are no duplicate or missing frames. after that, i edit them down to about 70 frames per gif, then select them all and rename them so that they're in numbered order (photoshop loads them out of order if i don't).

I do 70 frames mostly bc my sharpening action on photoshop doesnt go past 70 frames and i haven't bothered to fix it lol. also it's comfortable length for a gif so there's not much reason to. you can usually get away with about 40-50 frames tho before it feels too short.

ok nowww i open photoshop and things get good.

first thing i do is load the files into a stack.

i have a bunch of settings in place to make life easier so i already have my sharpening action created (which sharpens all the frames for me rather than having to do it manually. gift from God), and my timeline visible. so now i just play my sharpening action

then load the frames into an animation and reverse them so they dont play backwards.

then i set the frame delay to 0.05 seconds. it's interesting bc gifs played at normal speed look kinda weird. so having it slowed down a little is ideal. not too much though or it looks choppy.

now i crop the gif. i dont have to do this here but generally i do. just helps me focus without the distraction of the tv bars on the top and bottom and just. All the other stuff going on in the background.

nowwww i color. usually start with a color adjustment curve layer. when you use the little eyedrop tool this can really deepen the image and bring it to life. you dont realize how dull tv looks until you gif lol.

that gives me the base tones i want and deepens the image.

sometimes i brighten the gif with the curves layer, but in this case adding a separate brightening layer worked better.

then i'll export the gif with tumblr dimensions and upload it into a draft.

if it is still too dark or the colors look off, i'll just mess more with the layers. in this case, i only needed the two, but a lot of gifs will need a few different adjustment layers like vibrance or selective color to look right.

tw animal death, tw cancer under the cut

if it hasnt been painfully obvious based on my posts, shit has been happening in my personal life. my dog of over a decade just died. like an hour ago “just.” she had osteosarcoma, and while she was still there in her personality and still eating food (always. always eating food.) she was in pain and the cancer had spread a lot, and the kindest thing to do was euthanize her. it was peaceful, it was at home, she wasnt alone.

why are you telling us this, tumblr user leaf cabbage? i guess theres two reasons. one is that this is going to impact my writing and that’s what you are all here for. i dont know if ill be writing more as escapism, or less because i have a story about grief and i dont even know how to handle my own. i dont know how grief is gonna hit me this time around. i hope you will understand. i hope it does not impact the quality of my work. i want to give you the best, and i promised a lot over the summer. i want to write what you guys deserve, which is a good and satisfying story.

the other is selfish i guess. i just want other people to know she existed. she was an incredible dog and i want everyone to know she was here. she was a huge part of my world. she mattered more than most things. i want her to be known.
