I started in DC by reading fanfics, but as I began to read actual comics, I started to be unable to read the actual fanfic that got me into it in the first place because it's so out of character.

But there are still some stories that I love to read because I love the found family trope so much, even if it isn't really accurate to the source material.

As a comics purist (sometimes), are there tropes that you like enough that you'll still enjoy a fic even if it's not accurate to canon?

oh my god this is SUCH a fun question. bc while i started with the comics, there were certain characters and/or character dynamics where i was exposed to the fanon before the canon (just bc it's hard to read everything when you start out just to read some fanfic) and so i've definitely experienced the fanon to canon transition. (*especially* with Jason Todd. i had only read 80s/90s stuff where he was already dead or the New-52 bc that was on-going when i got into comics and man. the fanon misunderstandings i had about him before i got frustrated and sat down to read all his pre-Flashpoint stuff were absolutely bonkers.) and aside from that, whilst i tend to prefer canon over fanon, i'm not past giving fanon its flowers for occasionally having really interesting insights. occasionally. so some of my fanon "guilty pleasure" tropes would probably be

Morally Grey Tim Drake - this is one where if you try to back it up with canon, i *will* get salty about it. of everyone in the Batfam aside from maybe Bruce and Cass, Tim has the *most* black and white morals. often his internal conflicts are routed in such an inability to compromise his moral views and it can cause him to clash with other characters. he's *very* stiff and rigid in his beliefs and is *rare* to compromise in even the smallest ways. i mean, DC has repeatedly used Tim Drake of Tomorrow/Savior/Gun Batman!Tim for a reason. it's to demonstrate that of everyone, Tim *cannot* have his morals compromised. there's no grey area for him. he's zero or a hundred, so if he tips over the edge of "too far" he tips *all the way*, and doing so is one of his worst fears, how he could go "too far" if he let himself. a couple panels out of context from Red Robin (2009) (which was a grief spiral for Tim to begin with) don't change that. now that said. if it's done *right*, i sort of love Tim being morally grey in fanfic. it takes a specific flavor for me, and it's incredibly important to include that mental spiral along with it, of him struggling to justify it. i don't have any interest in "Tim Drake is loosy goosy with Bruce's morals and has the highest kill count and no one knows teehee" bc it doesn't play with the interesting parts of making Tim morally grey, which are fracturing his psyche. but all in all, i think it's fun to put Tim in a morally grey area and i will read it in fanfic and i enjoy writing it a lot

Joker Junior!Tim Drake - i've not written it on this account (yet) but on my main ao3 account one of my biggest fics surrounds this concept. this is one of those "well *technically* it's canon but only in a specific very divorced from the comics universe and would not work at all in the main timeline" so, i categorize it as fanon in that 95% of fics exploring the concept are not doing so within the Batman Beyond universe, but the main timeline. i just love it. I'll take any excuse to whump Tim, but this concept is so fun. psychologically breaking Tim will always be my favorite pastime. there are so many ways to explore the long-term effects this could have on him, how it could affect the Batfam. i'm not a fan of it being used as a "gotcha" to Jason or Babs' trauma with the Joker to paint Tim as the Ultimate Victim, but it is fun to see how their relationships would be affected by being mutual victims of him. (i have a vague JayTim idea where TIm fully retires from being Robin after being Joker Junior and killing the Joker, making Steph Robin for most of his typical Robin era and Jason still tracks him down out of curiosity bc he wants to know what happened and all. very underbaked but i've got thoughts.)

Renegade/Apprentice of Slade!Dick Grayson - this is another one where yes, this happened *sort of* in canon, but i highly doubt most people writing Renegate!Dick have read or are actually pulling from Nightwing: Renegade. it's just an exploration fo the concept fo Dick being Slade's apprentice and i will always eat it up in any capacity. whether Dick grows up with Slade from a young age, or chooses Slade for whatever reason later in life. it's not anything that works in canon bc it compromises Dick morally (similar to the above with Tim) and therefore will always come across incredibly fanon in most fics. but i can't say i don't enjoy it. it's fun to make Dick a little morally fucked up and see what you can make him under Slade's tutelage.

Jason & Damian Meeting in the League -there's no world where i believe this could work in the canon comics. (maybe in the Young Justice cartoon i suppose, but even then i think it's iffy) i would go as far to say it's wildly unrealistic. i don't see a world where Ra's would let Jason anywhere *near* Damian, bc Jason was Talia's pet project that he didn't approve of. that all said, there's something very interesting about how they *could've* met and them potentially bonding during that timeframe. them being somewhat brotherly during this time because Jason sees Bruce in Damian and sort of latches onto the kid and Damian is full of wonder hearing real stories about Batman and Robin, then that getting violently ripped away by Jason leaving the League is fun to me. it's fun how that could affect them within the Batfam and all. it's super fanon to me, but i do not care. i will eat it up

Bad Dad Clark Kent/Good Dad Lex Luthor - i will admit as a late, i've been less and less kind to this particular fanon bc of everything i've argued with people about, *this* one seems the most pervasive as misunderstood fanon. i don't mind when fanon exists, my gripe is when ppl try to claim it's canon. and the *arguments* i've had over this with people who can never seem to cite an actual comic are... frustrating. but that said, i think there is something fun to this strictly in fanon. the duality of who you expect to accept Kon and who you expect to hurt him being flipped is just sort of fun for the occasional guilty pleasure fic. it can make Kon's internal conflict a bit more interesting. the same goes for the Jon favoritism from Clark, it's not a canon thing (and i rlly wish ppl understood how complicated the timeline of Kon and Jon is and any distance from Clark toward Kon isn't malice, it's that Kon is from a timeline that Clark does not remember in the current canon so Clark just straight up doesn't know the poor kid.) but it's sort of fun to give Kon that complex of being overlooked and forgotten sometimes. making Kon just a *bit* more Luthor than Kent will *always* appeal to me in fanfic, especially if he *knows* it's wrong but craves approval from anyone who will give it.

Good Dad Bruce Wayne - i'll die on the hill Bruce is canonically a shitty father. maybe not to the extreme some people write him as, but he's not great at it. that said, i enjoy it in fanfiction. sometimes, i just want silly fluff or hurt/comfort where Bruce finally gets it right and manages to comfort whatever Batkid is in the fic. one of my favorite fics of all time is hinged on Bruce being a good dad, so i think it's just fun to explore how good the relationships *could* be, if Bruce was slightly less of an asshole. i usually prefer him as an asshole, but there are times i want low stakes nonsense.

Gotham Rogues Having Soft Spots for Robin(s) - just about every Rogue in Gotham has done something absolutely irredeemable, and most of them don't like or care about anyone in the Batfamily. but if there's a fic where one of the Robins inexplicably is sort of close with a Rogue and they have a cute silly relationship out of it? I'll eat it up i fear. Steph and the Riddler are besties? I'll believe it. Tim and Scarecrow get along pretty well? give me ten of these. Rogues protecting Robins just hits a spot. the unexpected nature of the relationship, as well as the fact they see each other regularly, can make a lot of good fodder.

But one day, you get snatched up by some organization that wants to use you as leverage or some shit, but you are just sobbing in relief at maybe being free- only to have Superman show up and do some not so super things to everyone who “stole” you

There are just so many casually horrifying things about Superman that people don't realize until you start like digging into his lore. "Oh he's super strong and a super fast flyer" actually he can do basically anything at those super speeds to the point he can literally even PROCESS THOUGHTS at near light-speed which means he has Absolutely Terrifying reaction times and can make plans and schemes on a dime, which, you know, can be even better utilized by him being intelligent. He has natural invulnerability so if you throw a punch at him too hard you could literally shatter the bones in your hand and he can't even control that, like you could literally hurt yourself with him on accident! He can see across INSANE DISTANCES and his x-ray vision doesn't have like a set range so he could do anything from, peep inside buildings to spy on you, to looking under your clothing for any bruises or injuries or even self harm marks, to peeking behind your hero disguise to learn your true identity, to seeing if there's anything inside your stomach and seeing if you're eating properly. Like jesus christ he literally found out Lois was pregnant from waking up one morning and suddenly hearing the heartbeat of the FETUS, there's literally nothing from him pulling that stereotypical "I know you're nervous or lying or afraid because I can literally hear your heartbeat increase" scary bullshit

And let's talk about Lois for a sec because my god her death was literally what kicked off the Injustice timeline? And there are other forms of Superman media where she just straight up dies naturally of cancer! Sure we could take the easy way and say "in this au Lois never existed or was just Clark's friend and he loved YOU" (which is my preferred default tbh bc, no competition for Reader lol) but I mean if you're going for that angst, that real whump, a yandere Clark Kent that just lost his wife/unborn child to either the Injustice incident or cancer, now overcome with grief? And in those cancer timelines they usually already have a son, Jonathan, and sometimes Jordan, and here's Clark thinking, well, his boy needs a mother, and he's got these weird feelings for you, and lil Jonny clearly has affection for you, maybe bring a bit of a platonic yan himself who sees you as either a big sister or even a secondary mom, so... be his wife maybe?

Like my god if Reader somehow helped him through the grief of losing Lois and managed to avoid "fully activating" Superman's anime villain arc, like he's going full fascist in the Injustice 2 Bad Ending, then some shit DEFINITELY goes down when Reader gets taken away. It just reactivates all his trauma. No! He can't lose anyone else! Jonathan can't lose anyone else! You're not just someone he loves, you're his FRIEND!

You're just huddled in whatever cell you've been kept in with your black eyes and bruises and knuckles bloodied from trying to fight back when you hear Clark's voice and you look up with excitement that just falls immediately off your face because holy shit did he just unlock that thumbprint scanner with a severed arm, and suddenly you're realizing there are other shades of red on his costume and dripping from his fingers

I can only imagine like, ngl I considered a sequel to my fic Doubt where Reader escapes the manor and runs into Supernan as the only other person who can protect you, so here we would have the inverse: you're the only one who knows about Clark's increasing instability and, while you still have your own freedom and autonomy, try to speak to Bruce about it, and now you have Batman Vs Superman: Competing For Your Heart Edition. I can only imagine what sort of unhinged reactions there would be if you think you've got Batman alone and you're beginning to cry all "Bruce I'm really worried about Clark, he isn't acting like himself, there's something wrong with him" and. Clark is like literally using his x-ray vision to read lips through the walls if he can't use his super hearing to outright eavesdrop.

Of course as you suggested, I'm always a slut for ideas with"oh shit I ran to this guy to help me and he's ALSO crazy, now they're teaming up and I'm in some weird shared/poly situation with TWO nutjobs". Lmao you go to Bruce concerned about Kal and Bruce goes to confront him and Clark just drops "did you know Y/N has been hiding self harm cuts under their hero suit also wow they smoke HELLA weed and im worried about their lungs and all the stuff they do when they're alone that no one else knows about 🥺" and suddenly here's Bruce " thanks i hate this actually :)" and there's a scheme concted to spy on you or move you elsewhere.

I've even thought of "Reader oh nooOoooOo, that, giant monster or villain attack or whatever also coincidentally destroyed your shitty little apartment complex? You mean Clark 'accidently' got sent flying into your building or smacked some giant creature into it and now you don't have a place to live? And you're broke too? Oh no 🥺 Well, BATMAN has this nice big house with lots of room in for you to stay toooootally 'temporarily', we PROMISE uwu"

Batman is the one who can put a tracking chip injected into your skin or even disguised as a filling in one of your teeth, and Superman is the one who can zoom off to rescue you/retrieve you "faster than a speeding bullet". I think one of the only people who could bring them down together at that point would be like. Fucking DARKSEID and, Jesus no, you definitely don't want HIM treating you as a pet 😭 the evil Batman that was brainwashed by him in the Apokolips War movie was scary enough (and scary HOT, lmao, let him keep me as some sort of prize and the only luxury Darkseid will allow him as a reward for his obedience. Lord Batman goes from having a meeting talking about like enslaving people to returning to his quarters and railing tf outta you because he's still holding onto some slim vestiges of humanity where he cares about you but also using you as his personal anti stress fuck toy)

but i see james as the kind of character who's inherently attracted to darkness, not exactly to what he considers is Bad but to what's Wrong or Broken, as in, it can still be fixed. i think this is why he was so drawn to sirius, he's very morally grey regardless of his hatred for his family's values (which wasn't even a thing at the beginning imo, i'm sure james and the others had to correct sirius a lot and they were the ones who actually helped him realise how bigoted his relatives were). james has always had the perfect parents the perfect home the perfect childhood. ofc he couldn't help but be fascinated by the other side

i think that his interest in regulus was born out of this morbid desire of wanting to get close to what he viewed as Wrong. besides, he was sirius' little brother, and i'm sure that, if nothing else, sirius spoke well of him during his first year. there had to be some curiosity there

i also think that his hero complex played a part in it. james believed he could help, believed he could fix sirius' relationship with his brother for him, believed he could make regulus Good again

once the feelings shifted, though, i feel like it was . everything james thought love was but also . the complete opposite . it was beautiful, and genuine, and sincere, but it was also greedy, and painful, and ugly. james brought out the best in regulus while simultaneously breaking him from the inside, giving him what he had pretended he didn't want but reminding him at the same time that he could never have it, not really. it had an expiry date. james was never really his. and regulus brought out the worst in james, all that parts of him he had tried his best to bury, every trait he had thought he had left behind after growing up a little and maturing some. james is someone who sees everything very black or white, always moving on extremes, but being with regulus would teach him about all these shades of grey. and it'd scare him. it'd make him doubt if he's actually a good person

they're both doomed by the narrative, but for opposite reasons. james is so loved he has to die, and regulus is never loved enough, never cared for enough, so he also has to die

it's just as dangerous for the universe to care too much about you as it is for it to not care about you at all

I feel so bad for Lunar. I do definitely think, that Gemini's points were valid, but I do think they went a little too far with it?

Trauma is a lot more complicated than they think, and cannot simply be overcome, though they are very much in the right for calling him about his lack of process, considering his avoidence of dealing with his own problems!

The one thing that rubbed me wrong, is the way they call out his feelings towards Eclipse. Because yes, they contradict themselves, but that's not unusual for abuse victims. Eclipse is, in a way, still their brother, and a deep part still loves him, while another fears him. Yet another part just wants vengeance, because of how angry it all makes them.

There's also the whole "refusing to grow up" thing, which I feel is a lot more complicated!

Okay I had this idea for a while now and I have no clue if it would be canon at all but. I gotta share it, I gotta -

So some context: I saw a series of post where it was like. A what if the Paldea + kitakami gang grew apart bc the mc left or something. I should be very clear this isn't any shade to those posts at all, cause I actually think it's super interesting to explore! But my mind went " okay what if I did the opposite".

So in my head I was like " What if Luca for some reason went off the grid and lost contact with his friends. But his friends still remained friends despite of it". Cause ya know, I thought it showed that their friendship wasn't reliant on luca being there. Don't get me wrong, it was tough: Luca was what brought them all together and helped them so much. Him not being there was hard- they were moments where they all thought their friendship was over. But it didn't! Their friendship prevailed! And it lasted all the way up till adulthood. This does include Kiki and Carmine! They all keep in touch with each other and their lives. But Luca? Pretty much no contact.

Which gets me into the shit that fucks me over with this idea/au- Luca himself. Luca is. Not happy. Not in the slightest. He left to pursue a dream that probably wasn't even his, and he continued to drift along in an uncomfortable sea of dissatisfaction. After a while it lead to him getting increasingly anxious: his friends all could be living happy fulfilling lives while he's stuck in this sea of nothing. She should be happy. She should be fulfilled, but they're not and it haunts them. He's too afraid to call his friends. After it's been so long and when she essentially ghosted them for literal years, they probably wanted nothing to do with them, right? Life moves on, and so should he. What really fucks me over with this idea/au is that Luca is just so. Hollow. He isn't as bright as he used to be. That charming, infectious smile, the shining light in his eyes- they're gone. He's more nervous than anything, putting on a soft fake smile that gets him through the day. It's like he's an entirely different person now.

R.B finds him. Naturally. How and why doesn't matter, what matters is that she finds him and drags his ass back to Paldea so they can confront his friends. Luca is not excited by this. He misses them dearly yes, but he isn't ready to see them ( then when will he?), but R.B is having none of it. So they go home and the reactions....vary.

R.b was the one that found him, and the one that dragged him back home. But she was never angry. Stern yes, but not angry. In fact she was more than willing to help Luca. She kinda acts as a mediator for the group.

Nemona is the one that hugs him first, acting as if he never left, treating him like she always had. She literally tackled him into a hug when seeing him again. I do think there's a tiny bit of leftover resentment and sadness from Luca leaving- one of the first people who finally Got her left - she tries to keep it positive! Really! But it had hurt back then and it still hurts now- she's choosing to focus on the fact that her bestest rival is back. Hopefully for good.

Penny is bitter, and I think she deserves to be. She had a deep fear of team star leaving her, and back then she just accepted it. But now that she's older? Now with Luca, who changed her life for the better? Who just up and left? Yeah she's bitter. She wouldn't have even been there if it weren't for R.B and Nemona. Though deep down she kinda blames herself. She can hack into the league easy peasy, but finding a friend in the Internet was something she never considered. She wonders if things would be different if she brute forced her way to Luca before the ghosting got bad. But overall? She's bitter. And again, I think it's deserved.

Arven feels betrayed. He has been for a long time. He was already abandoned once by his biological parents, twice by the ai versions of said parents, and the one person who he cares for so much just. Left. So was it all for nothing? Was everything they did together for nothing? Cause that's what it feels like. Early on the feeling was particularly bad, but with the help of everyone around him( and R.B n him pretty much being each other's rock ) by the time Luca comes back he isn't angry. He's simply distant....but also holding out some hope. He calls Luca "bud" now, which is so weird.

Kieran and Luca probably had to break up when Luca decided to leave in the first place - and even if they didn't then, they definitely did when Luca started ghosting. So when Luca came back I imagined Kieran wanting to be petty. So petty. "Show him what he missed" petty. But then he actually saw Luca and it was nothing Kieran had imagined. He was confused. Why wasn't Luca smiling like he used to. Why was the light in his eyes gone? Seeing Luca again pretty much put a halt on Kieran's planned bravado, and just left him utterly confused. He doesn't know how to act around him

Carmine is very good at putting on an angry front. Mainly bc she is pissed on the behalf of her brother who had gotten his heart broken. But as always, underneath that raging flame is someone genuinely worried. R.B still had to hold her back from pouncing Luca though.

And that's everything! Keep in mind this idea/au is all of them as adults, if I didn't make that clear already lol. this isn't canon exactly but I do love me some angst. Also please no I see Luca as a masc pinkie pie lmao.

Thoughts on The Sable Quean

This is definitely the least interesting of the books I've reread. Not the outright worst (Bellmaker) but I still have all these notes. 

Once again, there is a new chapter art style I totally forgot about. I like the shading but the eyes are lifeless on the creatures where it's not meant to be. One of the chapter art is an otter and it reminds me of the style of The Great Redwall Feast picture book that came out in 1996. 

The names are very interesting this time around. I like them. Tura, Tassy, and Thwissle should probably all be related being squirrels. 

We have a second family of hares who don't talk like the stock types or even fit Salamandastron naming conventions. Knowing that the cartographer in 23 was a hare maiden, hares were really shaping up to be more varied than they had been in literal decades in this series.  Ironic that Diggs is the best hare since Florian. 

This is also the second recent book (at least off the top of my head) where otters have other roles at Redwall other than warrior , Skipper or fisher or random citizen (Fumbril here and Toran in Loamhedge)

I thought the Flitchaye were tiny squirrels but they're tiny weasles?

As soon as I saw the names of Buckler's brother and sister in law, I realized I had been mistaken the ending of this book for the ending of Eulalia. So I don't remember anything about that book. I've started it again and I remember really liking Maudie, but that's another post.

Chapter 9’s art is the tapestry of Martin. It shows the Late Rose, something I don't remember any other book mentioning, but it's possible I simply missed it. I remember it being a stained glass window but maybe that's a TV thing. I know it's an actual rose on the grounds but it's mentioned rarely after Martin the warrior 

This one leans harder into the socialization aspect of fretful females and fighting males than nearly every other book in the series. The only exception is Flib. 

though I recall, your voice sounded rather different.” the rest of the scene plays out and confirms; while animals are possessed by Martin, he also changes their voices to his own. Kind of creepy. 

I'd rather hear about the adventures of Oakheart and Marjoram as children than the rest of the story. 

Forgot that it took 16 books to get a second fighting mole (I consider Arula one) and the first capital Warrior in the series ever. 

And 21 books to have a female badger get the prophetic dreams to go to Salamandastron. Also I knew the name Ambrivina but I forgot who had it. 

Three animals are killed and it seems to be rushed through by the narrative. Lessens the impact. 

This entire concept just has no steam behind it. The children are missing but there's been little to no established outside communities in mossflower in the series so where did these children come from? Are they all orphans?

Some characters are so uninteresting that we’re constantly reminded of their relationship in proximity to the main characters bc they have nothing else. It's very bad regarding Clarinna and Clerun. I will say the scenes with Clarinna and Buckler in the end are very endearing. 

Vilaya has a title and a maid but nothing makes her special besides being the third female antagonist and also a sable I guess.

#ttpd analysis day seven - Fresh Out The Slammer

this track is one of the most poignant ones to me in the album. it holds a few different emotions, initially hope, then at the end there’s this sort of sadness like the narrator is telling themselves it’ll work simply because it has to. there’s an already weary foreboding in it. like be careful what you wish for. anyway -

the first verse is FULL of callbacks to previous lyrics that help paint a picture:

Splintered back in winter, silent dinners, bitter / this has a mix of evermore x tolerate it references, even the dinner scene in the ATW short film can be pictured

He was with her in dreams / okay so this lyric i’ve seen some discussion about. to me, it’s a direct reference to sometimes I wonder, when you sleep, are you ever dreaming of me? basically, the narrator once wondered that about the muse, and now the muse is thinking/dreaming about someone else. it could be a different person than the narrator, or even an idealized version of the narrator (like the toy version in MBBHFT). but basically this means that at this point they were checked out of the relationship. in a positive (at the time?) outcome she later says I’m the girl of his American dreams so it sounds like they both have someone else they’re connecting to

Gray and blue and fights and tunnels / blew things out of proportion now you’re blue x I turned around before I hit the tunnel

okay so all of that brings us to the final verse which, production wise, slows down. it’s like we sped through the past events and arrived at the present. it reminds me so much of folklore, to the house where you still wait up and that porch light gleams / you'd be standin' in my front porch light, and I knew you'd come back to me. the next lyric is where the production slows to almost a stop, like you’re frozen in time there too. the children’s swings makes me think of seven, but the imaginary rings feels like a reference to invisible string. now before y’all come at me, i feel this especially bc of the swirled you into all of my poems like, works can be inspired from different experienced and different people, and i think over time, looking back, they can take on different meanings too depending on the eyes and ears taking it in. i love how she sings the ending but there is such an uneasy sadness considering how hopeful the song starts off. it’s kind of like throughout the song she’s excitedly telling everyone it’s gonna be all right and then at the end she’s trying to convince herself of that

I don’t really agree about the company protecting Jk more by playing into Jkk. There has not actually been much Jkk-ing this year I think. Jkkrs themselves were in scrambles because they got so little, some even jumping ship because of it. I think there has actually been more real Tkk moments than real Jkk moments since solo era started.

But I do think your mention of Jkkrs is an interesting one, because Jkkrs do play a part in the whole Taennie rumor mill. They keep the rumors going and they emphasize those every chance they get. I wonder if the company took that into account when this pr-stunt was concocted. They ofcourse took into account Tkkrs, and Army as a whole.. but would they have considered Jkkrs? Possibly not. Maybe things did get out of hand a bit and that’s why Tae seemed to leave ship after Paris so fast.

Companies are all about money, but the money is where the artist is. If Tae does well the company does well. Though Tae gets hate, I think for the most part he is very loved. If they keep the Taennie moments away (by backlisting questions, no linking them, no sightings, maybe some shade by Tae himself) things should settle soon enough. Right now things seem a bit more tense, because there is anticipation. I think we’ll get a taste of what it’s going to be like real soon. Jennie won’t be a topic. Maybe she’ll be linked to someone new soon, and than it’s going to be over.

Alright, now that we got the basic unbiased info established and out of the way, here are my personal thoughts:

First Impression: That cover is ugly as Hell. It has the same pale blue I disliked about the HBL cover but has swapped the ugly neon yellow with a somehow even uglier neon green. And randomly threw in a neon magenta for the secular title.

This is visual vomit, my eyes feel assaulted and I am sickened to my core.

Regarding the story, I'm very unhappy that it's set after UtE. For all I'm concerned the last book ruined the universe and made Val too OP for there to even be a chance for any story set in that time period to be even remotely good.

The title is so fucking generic too.

The Artwork: I don't like it, especially not the cover. I know I said I really wanted an SP comic, but I said that under the assumption Todor Hristov (the Grimoire comic artist) or someone with a similar style would be drawing it. Instead we get this.

It's this cheap classic American comics style which I despise so much and not the more 'painterly' European graphic novel style I much prefer. This is ironic bc the main artist is from Northern Ireland. I do get that Landy likes this style bc he's probably nostalgic for it, but quite frankly, the classic comic style is a big part of the reason why I never really got into comics.

I would have loved to see how Todor Hristov draws the nasties, but I dread to see how THIS artist would draw them.

While this is mostly a personal taste thing I also see a few things I would say are art sins. Like the shading on the lower part of the hair. Why would you cross hatch/texture shade there. The shading lines should go with the flow of the hair like it was done for the top part of the hair. One eye brow is thicker than the other. And the way the nose is shaded makes it look like the face is looking to the viewers left while the nose seems to be pointing towards the right?? The nose shading is super weird in general. No idea what's going on there.

And I dislike the way the skull was stylised. Too long upper jaw, to short lower jaw. And why is his jaw so wide??

Considering that Landy is writing this and he's going full control freak on it again, the art is the only thing an SP comic would have going for it. And so far, I don't like what I'm seeing.

They could have at least put more effort into the cover art considering that's what makes people pick up a comic in the first place :/ (comic cover art is often not done by those that illustrate the actual comic)

Regarding the TheBookSeller Article (there is alot to unpack here)

I'm ok with the selfcontained part. But why does it have different lore from the main series?? It's not only set in the same universe it's the same goddamn characters!

Oh please, if he respected his fanbase his writing in phase 2 wouldn't have been so goddamn lazy. The pandering is half assed and ill-informed and releasing the Grimoire in the state it was in was an insult to his readers. Not even the bootlikers could bother faking liking it.

And adding 'something extra' to new editions is the exception, not the rule. Plus, I know examples of deleted scenes/What-Could-Have-Been, but I'm not aware of him adding new chapters to books?? Do they mean the short stories?

Despite multiple attempts SP never became popular in America and I know that at least Bulgaria stopped translating and in Germany the book stores have like 2 SP books max when there used to be big displays for every release. And the fandom is pretty much on life support. Half of it hates Landy's guts anyways.

I might have posted about this already but I can't find the post.

Something my psych is working on with me is allowing me to express myself in non-verbal ways around my parents and desensitising myself to their inevitable "ew, Dusty's being weird again" microexpressions. We spent a couple of sessions talking about clothing, and letting me wear weird shit and learning to deal with the microexpressions, but decided it wouldn't work bc buying a new wardrobe in my country is expensive as shit.

But just after our last session I realised that there was something I could do that was similiar: paint my room a colour I wanted! As a child I always wanted it to be purple but my parents never let me. At best I'd get this pathetic pastel colour. Ew. No real purple, no royal purple, which is my favourite shade. Generally I got stupid boring pale colours. When I repainted my room in my early 20s I didn't even consider going for the purple my parents always hated, I went for an off-white that wouldn't clash with any of my prints... but there was the slightest purple tinge to it.

So Sunday I went to Bunnings and got a bunch of purple colour cards (I think they're called paint chips in the US? The blocks of cardboard that are as close as possible to the actual paint colour) but I also picked up a couple of shades of another colour. This colour is also bright and bold, none of that washed out crap, and complements the other features of my room well so even if I decided purple didn't work it was still a nice, bright colour that had some fucking personality. Incidentally, it's the favourite colour of a queer neurodivergent coworker of mine who I don't speak to on a personal level, but am on very good terms with, and she supported me through a sexual harassment issue that spooked me so much I almost noped out of that job before I'd even consider reporting it. She helped make me feel safe enough to report it, encouraged me to do so, and was there every step of the way.

Monday she didn't come to work. Last couple of weeks she'd been going home early some days so when one of the bosses (I have two, it's complicated) said she was sick all week I thought, okay, she's clearly Going Through Some Stuff and needs to take a mental health week, she mentioned she's had a history of being under a psychiatric hold before, she's been showing warning signs , she'll feel better after she's had some time off, it's just a preventative thing, she'll be okay.

Then yesterday there was a meeting and grandboss said she was in hospital. And I'm thinking oh shit oh shit it's clearly really bad but at least she got help before --

decided that now was a GREAT TIME to start talking about the importance of taking mental health seriously and as well meaning as she genuinely was clearly did not spend TWO SECONDS TO THINK ABOUT THE IMPLICATIONS OF DISCUSSING MENTAL HEALTH WHEN WE'VE JUST BEEN TOLD THAT A COWORKER IS IN HOSPITAL FOR UNDISCLOSED REASONS, YOU COULD HAVE LITERALLY TALKED ABOUT THIS AT ANY OTHER TIME BUT NO YOU HAD TO DO IT RIGHT FUCKING NOW DIDN'T YOU?!?!!!!

so now there's no fucking way my coworkers didn't rub two fucking braincells together and come to the obvious fucking conclusion that my coworker tried to fucking kill herself and has psychiatric issues, THANKS YOU FUCKING IDIOT.

The grandboss was a witness but I sat on it for a couple of hours thinking, if I'd just tried to kill myself and my boss strongly implied that it happened to my coworkers, what would I want my coworkers to do about it and decided that the answer to that was "raise hell" and then emailed my grandboss going "so hey that thing boss said during the meeting that you saw? WHAT THE FUCK, THAT WAS NOT OKAY????" but like, professionally, and also somewhat meekly because "raise hell" is something I'm still practicing and I barely have a spine right now so I considered it a victory that I said anything at all and wouldn't allow myself to not say something so I compromised by basically being like "I'll trust your judgment on this if I'm overreacting" (which I am already kicking myself about)

He did not reply that day, or for the first three hours of my shift which I spent feeling completely fucking unhinged because my brain had decided to give me a delayed reaction to yesterday's news and on the brink of a total fucking meltdown, especially because I was in sensory hell as the phones would not stop ringing and I had two urgent issues to deal with that took far too fucking long to deal with do you know how fucking pants-shitting it is to get technical issues on a study that involves someone in critical condition and every single IT person you ring about it is like "WELL THAT SURE IS A PROBLEM YOU HAVE, GOOD LUCK LOL" and then it takes two hours to fix bc the only guy who will actually fucking help you just dips halfway into giving you support bc he has a meeting???!? I went home told boss "nope I can't cope with this, I'm taking the rest of today off", then continued to have a meltdown into the afternoon so asked if she was comfortable with me taking the week off (bc all my coworkers must be p damn upset with what happened to my hospitalised coworker too so I can't pretend I'm the only one affected). she said yes but gave me a small bit of good news that coworker isn't as bad off as I thought, but that still doesn't mean much because it takes a LOT to get a psychiatric hold.

Then I came home and stress cleaned and stress painted. and then got distracted briefly when my mother got a tick and I had to go out and buy some different tweezers because normal flat tweezers are useless for ticks and do you have any idea how fucking hard it is to yank those fuckers out they are stronger than fucking Hercules

anyway I'm still neurotic and off my fucking rocker but at least I've made cleaning progress and painted some bits of the wall with the paint samples.

And yeah, I get that. It's like *the* most prominent P5 (and Persona in general) ship. Like, I get the enemies to lovers vibe, but I could really never get into it. It's just this thing where I can't bring myself to ship two people where one was actively trying to murder the other one - it just doesn't sit right for me. (I'm also notoriously bad at multishipping, and I've shipped Shukita for way way longer than I've ever even considered Akeshu as a ship, so that also definitely plays a role for me)
