i don't really know how to word this but like i feel like i'm gonna forever have to deal with the pain and heartache of one of my very first pokémon games- the first 'normal' pokémon game i've ever played, that i will have lasting nostalgia and love for as a result of it being formative to my introduction into the series- being the one that will forever be looked down upon for bad graphics and technical issues as a result of the game having been rushed

like i honest to goodness want to scream and yell and cry into the void about how this means everything to me and will always be one of my fave games just in general. but how am i gonna do that without someone being like 'the broken overpriced mess? the one that's missing all this stuff from the older games that was great? the thing with all the cringe? that one?' or whatever. and the thing is they aren't wrong for their criticisms either like i know the fact that they rushed this wonderful game hardcore is a massive stain on its reputation and it hurts me too but like i cannot turn off the brain full of love in me and be a mean critic. or even an impartial one. i mean i criticize everything i love don't get me wrong i am constantly running my mouth about what i like and don't like. but at the end of the day i approach all media with an unusually optimistic mindset. if you see me talk a ton about something no matter what i'm saying you can bet it means i love it.

okay so as a gen 5 stan who does adore the story in bw and bw2, and now that gen 5 has experienced both a vicious hatedom that wouldnt hear a single positive thing about the games, and now a super protective fandom that insists they were perfect and had zero flaws... can we admit now that the bw1 story at least was. a little mid.

The diffriders are so fucking fascinating to me specifically flare trooper dumjid bc like. You take a dragon mercenary who has seen war and has actively watched many comrades die. His whole thing is that he’s a perfect guard and thus the only one who survived, leading to a fucked up conception of himself as above death. And then you have him possess the body of some kid who presumably agrees to let him see earth bc That’s His Favorite Card And He Thinks He’s Cool and who’s probably like 12 (sorry saori I have no clue how old you are I’m just guessing based off taiyou + hiroki) and just. Walk around on earth (where are saori’s parents btw. Like you could say this about most vanguard characters but where are saori’s parents/guardians/friends do they know what “saori” is up to?? Does anyone who knew him pre-diffride realize how different he’s been acting?). Play a card game where he commands his dead comrades bc shiranui is paying him (which. How is he paying him, earth currency or cray currency? And what IS cray currency for that matter?). The only thing he likes about earth is the music but he is specifically cursed to keep having his headphones break. When a unit who’s diffriding a human dies in the human’s body, both the unit and the human die on both planets, and besides the money dumjid is only on shiranui’s team bc antero/miguel DIED, a fact which he’s fully aware of and iirc derides him for (may be wrong abt that one though). He constantly tells people to die when he’s cardfighting them. He is laid-back about vanguard and doesn’t care much until he loses a cardfight and because loss and death are inextricably linked in his mind he proceeds to get Super Fucked Up About It bc he’s built his entire self image off being The One Who Survives and losing the cardfight is akin to confirming that it’s possible for him to die & he especially can’t accept that Some Random Humans have the ability to take him out. Sometimes he shows his opponents the battlefield and the bodies of his comrades and they really don’t seem to devote much thought to it (like. What??? I get that chrono & friends love vanguard and chrono does address it a little bit but mostly iirc just to say “I don’t think that’s what vanguard actually does/that’s not OUR vanguard”). He’s affected worse and worse with each loss and joins a group trying to end the world to get revenge on the humans who’ve beaten him (iirc unclear whether he knows the success of the destruction of the earth will destroy him too). He becomes the last of the original diffriders - chaos breaker dragon doesn’t count he was diffridden during U20 - to remain on earth, a point which he makes sure to bring up as proof of his superior survival abilities. The kid whose body he’s possessing expresses that he’s not happy about the way dumjid’s acting and dumjid doesn’t give a shit and continues to puppet his body around. Just, everything about him as a character is so fascinating in a concerning way and, like shiranui, he brings up the fact that vanguard is Real in a way that the earth characters don’t really consider - yes they have strong imaginations and genuine attachment to their units, but ultimately they’re playing a card game where even if cards get sent to the drop/damage zones they can come back for the next battle* whereas on cray they’re fighting Actual Battles and the units that die die For Real And Permanently. Unlike shiranui, who eventually began to see vanguard as a method of reunion with his dead friends and decided that what he’d been told about earth vanguard being a direct cause for his friends’ deaths might be wrong, Dumjid never changes his view on earth vanguard after “experiencing death”, so when he finally loses and goes back to cray he’s essentially dragged back clawing and screaming. I don’t know, there’s just something about him that’s sooooo soooo fascinating to me

i don't think i can even begin to explain the chokehold that the 80s dungeons and dragons cartoon has on brazilians like, it's for sure one of those extreme cases where the show was way more popular overseas than on it's home country. it's part of our pop culture. everyone knows about it at least in passing, and references to how the show never got a proper ending (as well as urban legends about how said ending would have played out) are still circulating to this day

Yes! I think too the difference in make-up between 1.07 and 2.03 comes down a lot to the blush. 1.07 clearly drew a lot from Marie Antoinette, and in paintings there tends to be a rosiness to the apples of her cheeks, which I imagine was part of the inspiration, and I do think suits Jacob's face shape a lot more. Like you said, it really emphaises the delicateness of his softer features, whereas Sam's got such extreme features in his face between his bone structure and big mouth and big eyes (which are so aggressively blue even without the contacts), so that kind of higher blush placement down the cheekbone I think both emphasises them, but also kind of softens them a bit? It looks like a softer shade of pink too.

I loved reading this -- I don't know a ton about makeup (I want to learn more), and thinking about how the placement and color of blush could make such a difference is so fascinating. And you're totally right, the apple of the cheek vs. the cheekbone being emphasized really alters the look.

Louis having such delicate features and Lestat having such extreme features (and both being gorgeous, obviously) really suits those characters. Sam's features are so interesting to me because he's such a mixture of hard and soft, like the jawline and then the big blue lamb eyes, and that Harlequin look really emphasizes his mix of, I guess you could say, masculine and feminine beauty.

And I agree with the other anon, I love his scar and that makes total sense that it would be very appealing to an artists. I really think someone on the show loves it -- maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like they film him on that side more often than the other.

Yeah! Face-shape has a lot to do with how make-up looks on, and so taking a period-typical look and applying it is going to suit people differently. There's a pretty good write-up on blush and face-shape here if you're interested, and given I'd describe Jacob as having a heart-shaped face and Sam as having a square one, I'd say it lines up pretty well with what I was saying yesterday. Totally agree about your assessment of them looks-wise too. :-)

seeing the jorge celebrations you posted is so interesting, but besides the gladiator, i didn't even know any of them. dorna and the motorcycle media have been talking valentino's celebrations for years, with stuff like "top 10 valentino rossi celebrations," but they're so indifferent to everyone else's. it's so unfair. thanks for showing me

I mean, you may have noticed but much of that post was like... me scrounging together screenshots from the actual race footage rather than finding actual nice photos. if you don't show people this stuff, of course they're not gonna decide for themselves whether they're into it or not. it's a shame, because it's kinda also interesting specifically in relation to valentino? like, everyone who was doing celebrations after he '''started'''' it was kinda inevitably in conversation with his approach, and it's an interesting element of his impact on the sport

with jorge specifically, I do think part of it is that it did kinda tail off. you have this 2007 stuff... then you have a few other fun ones like that time he almost killed himself jumping into the water jerez 2010 or the chair in le mans 2010 melandri thought was like, sophisticated subliminal mind games via the colour of the chair. what an incredible sentence to type out. and of course various championship celebrations but... it did change, he still did the lorenzo's land stuff and the jumping on the podium, but it also changed a bit tonally? a little more defiant, not always wanting to give a gift to the fans as much it was rubbing it in their faces. valentino is unique in that he has these kinda staged celebrations over the span of so many years, so you do also have a little bit of an arc there. the way he's changed his approach over those years, when he kinda went back to that over the years and what that meant to him (cf 2003-04) - but then the memorable celebrations post-2006 are really the spontaneous ones (kissing the corkscrew, pointing to the 99, celebrating to the empty jerez grandstands). it's a well he keeps coming back to in one way or the other, but it's hardly a uniform approach. jorge's celebrations tail off way sooner in his career way more sharply - and beyond his actual popularity or lack thereof with the general fanbase at that time, that's probably part of why they haven't stuck in people's minds in the same way

It's not Roach but I remember liking the portrayal of Yuri in The Enemy of My Enemy by RollingVeins. It's a Makarov X Price fic but Yuri features pretty heavily in it. I read it over a year ago though so my recollection of how good it was may not be entirely accurate but I liked it when I read it.

OH FUCK yeah i remember reading that. had to look it up. not so sure how i feel about the writer now but the fic itself was interesting. i read it like a year ago too. i’m not personally inclined to like soulmate fics 99% of the time so this was pretty significant for the fact that i thought it was neat the first time around alone. as for yuri specifically, i think that since he was given any kind of importance at all it stands out but he very much was a background character. this is not a flaw, i would like to point out, moreso an observation. i wish there was more of him, but the fic’s just not about him! such is life.
