my les mis hot take is that the idealogical conflict between valjean and javert is much more compelling in the musical than in the brick. obviously they share the overarching idea of forgiveness vs. punishment, but hugo writes it as a very straightforward "good guy christian and bad guy atheist" whereas the musical offers, in my opinion, a much more interesting juxtaposition of worldviews. characterizing javert as devoutly religious makes their conflict that of two different interpretations of christianity: black-and-white, fire-and-brimstone legalism vs. love and forgiveness. that, to me, is what makes valjean and javert such compelling foils and parallels to one another.

Thoughts on Mukuro’s sense of fashion / what she’d wear out of uniform?

Honestly, I don't think she has much of a preference when it comes to fashion. I don't really see her leaning towards femme or masc clothes over the other. I just think she would wear anything thats both comfortable for her but also appropriate for the occasion. To me, her closet is just filled with whatever she’s picked up during Junko's fashion sprees. Ranging from random t-shirts and clearance jeans, to pretty dresses, to her ghillie suit. Truly her sister's twin in the sense that she can pull off any outfit.

However, I feel as though I'm one of the few who likes her uniforms. She probably spent a large portion of her career IN a uniform, considering she was a merc. Her uniform is probably one of the few forms of familiarity she has after going straight from the battlefield to highschool. But it also helps aid her talent by not drawing attention to herself, especially next to her sister. Idk, I personally find it more engaging then just throwing her in camou, no offense to the redesigners who do change her design.

She does, of course, partake in the time honored tradition of stealing your siblings shit. She needs something she doesn’t have in her closet? Junko's room is like a next door JCPenny's. But sadly Junko's talent is a weapon she can't dodge, so Mukuro gets caught ever damn time.

1: these are two awkward teens wearing fancy clothes over their everyday clothes, like two children playing dressup

2: the eldritch abomination deer wearing human clothes

3: the host making relentless puns

also the little detail of jesse (a boy who was shown in the previous episode to be harmed by toxic masculinity) having fun with it, in contrast to lake (who can be read as a masculine girl or as nonbinary/transmasc/etc.) being unenthusiastic

Falsettos is my favorite musical and I've lost count of the times I've seen it, but for some reason it just hit me that when Marvin says "I left my kid, I left my wife, to be with you", it's a direct answer to Whizzer's "All your life you wanted men, and when you got it up to have them, who knew it would end your life?"

Because Whizzer is talking about AIDS. He's been an openly gay man for much longer, he's been with other men, and he knows how repressed Marvin was. So, he's commenting on how tragic it is that now that Marvin allowed himself to enjoy this, they'll both end up dead.

But Marvin knew he'd lose his life for this. He had a tight knit family, perfectly patriarchal, and he put it all on the line in the name of Whizzer's affections. And they're both stubborn and they're both drowning in toxic masculinity and so neither of them actually admitted this simple truth: Whizzer was afraid of loving Marvin because he thought all he wanted was sex.

It takes Whizzer's death for them to finally fix their greatest misunderstanding. Finally Whizzer says "I'm sorry it's over, now that you could have the sex you wanted", and Marvin replies "It wasn't the sex, it was you. I'd end my life again if it meant I could live with you. I did it before already".

And I'd like to believe that I'd do it again, and again, and again.
