“So maybe vampires? Classic.” Buck suggests, hoping they’ll finally settle on something. But one look at Tommy’s face tells him it’s another no. 

“I don’t know. It’s kinda basic.” His boyfriend says, and, okay, Buck can see that. 

“Yeah, okay.” Buck hums, taking a second to come up with something else, as he and Tommy walk through the park, taking the long way to Tommy’s car. It’s a late evening, the moon illuminating their path, Tommy’s hand warm in his. They’re just finishing up date night, and at the end of their dinner the subject of Halloween was brought up – which is what they’ve been on for the last fifteen minutes. “So I guess ghosts or zombies or, I don’t know, clowns or pirates are also a no?”

“Uh, they might be a maybe?” Tommy shrugs, but clearly he’s not very into it. 

“What about superheroes? Ooh, you could be Superman. You kinda look like him anyway.” He says, bringing their clasped hands to kiss Tommy’s knuckles. “My own personal hero.” He whispers, and Tommy laughs. Buck’s sure if it wasn’t dark, he’d see a faint blush in his cheeks.

“And what would that make you, Wonder Woman?” There’s a skeptical but amused tone in his voice. 

“Maybe.” He shrugs and Tommy doesn’t even need to say anything for Buck to know he’s not a fan. “Okay, so Batman and Robin.”

“Hm, that’s one to think about.” Tommy responds. Buck takes that as a win, but they could do something more fun.

“Luke and Leia.” He says just because maybe Star Wars will be something to agree on – though, on the other hand, that might just spiral into another disagreement they’ve had before about those movies in general, so maybe better to leave it alone. Buck loves Tommy so much, but his Star Wars opinions are… not good. He can look past that, though. No one can be perfect.

“They’re siblings. We’re not doing a sibling couples’ costume, Evan.” He says decisively, shaking his head. Bossy, for someone who can’t decide on a costume. Buck rolls his eyes, kinda fond but kinda annoyed.

“So Leia and Han Solo. Oh, or Han and Luke? To put a bit of a spin on it?”

“Uh-” Tommy makes a face – to his credit, he does try to hide it – and Buck sighs in frustration. He doesn’t even want to hear the reason for the no. He pauses, trying to think of something else, the silence always pleasant between them. Whether they talk for hours, or are silent together, in Tommy’s company every second is the most comfortable and enjoyable. Buck just feels like he can be fully himself, and lean into his silliest side. 

“We could be Venom and Eddie Brock.” He says, mostly joking, the image that popped into his head so ridiculous he laughs.

“Hm. And how would that work, exactly? One of us in regular clothes and the other in costume as Venom?”

“Yeah. You as Eddie, and I dressed in all black, on your back.” He gives Tommy a shit-eating grin when he glances at him disbelievingly. “You know, like when Venom pops out of Eddie’s back?”

“And, what, I’d carry you on my back the whole night?” He laughs, but Buck just nods. “Sweetheart, I’m strong, but I’m not that strong. Best I could do is a few minutes.” He sounds almost apologetic, and Buck needs to kiss him about it, so he presses a quick kiss to his lips, stopping them briefly.

“I know, I’m kidding.” He whispers, resuming walking. “Would be cool, though.”

“It would.” Tommy admits. Silence falls over them again, as the gears in Buck’s brain keep turning, going through every movie he can remember ever seeing, or any fun and cool couples they could realistically dress up as.

“Beauty and the Beast? I could do a yellow suit. And you can be my Beast.” Buck leans closer to Tommy, his chin brushing Tommy’s shoulder as they walk, almost at the car now. He whispers, “You already are.”

“That’s a leap from Venom.” A laugh escapes Tommy. “I don’t know. It’d be cute, but I thought you wanted scary.”

“True. We could make it scary.” He says, but then another idea pops into his head. “Oh, how about the Addams family? You know, to keep the spooky vibe.” Buck bumps his shoulder into Tommy’s.

“Well, I do love the Addams family.” Tommy nods. “Who exactly, though?”

“The best couple ever, of course. Morticia and Gomez.” He says, and watches Tommy’s face for his reaction. “And you hate it.” He sighs, and rolls his eyes, starting to get a tiny bit annoyed. It’s like the fiftieth costume he suggested, Tommy has to like something.

“No, I love it, really, but, you know, if we’re doing a couple, maybe it could be a gay couple instead?” Tommy suggests, pulling Buck a little closer to him. Well, that was the idea at first, before Buck spiraled where he is now, because someone kept shutting down his ideas. At least now he gets why some of those were a no from Tommy, because Buck thinks some were really fun.

“Yeah, sure. If we could agree on any.” He shoots Tommy a pointed look.

“Okay, any other ideas?” Tommy asks, a hint of fond amusement on his face. It’s not funny, though, they need to figure it out quickly, Halloween is right around the corner.

“Salt and pepper shakers.” He throws out. “Or ketchup and mustard.”

“Are you serious?” Tommy raises his eyebrow, giving him his signature ‘Evan’ look, version exasperated. Buck just shrugs, trying to hide a smile, the thought of his boyfriend having specific smiles and looks reserved for him making his heart swell.

“I’m running out of ideas, Tommy. Oh!” He exclaims, a new random idea popping into his head. “Tom and Jerry! Get it?” He grins, looks at his boyfriend expectantly, and sees a tired but very fond and amused smile. “Tom-my.” He drags out the first syllable, just to get his point across.

“Yeah, baby, I get it. You’re adorable, but no.” He says, and then chuckles when Buck pouts. 

“How about the emotions from Inside Out?” He grumbles, the movie popping into his head randomly – probably because he and Tommy watched it with Jee on their latest babysitting duty. They did a whole Pixar marathon. “You can be boredom.”

“Oh, really?” Tommy gives him one of his looks, and, damn, Buck almost melts under his gaze, even when he’s annoyed with him. He loves him so fucking much. “You calling me boring?” He tugs at Buck’s hand, stopping them and bringing him closer, so they’re face to face, his hands settling on Buck’s hips, Buck’s landing on his huge arms, now covered by a jacket. There’s an amused smirk on Tommy’s face. “I thought I was cool?”

“Nah, you’re not. You hide it well, but I know now that you’re just a huge dork. And very, very boring.” Buck teases, trying and failing to say it with a straight face, a smile breaking through. “And I love you anyway.”

“I love you, too, Evan.” Tommy says, his smile forming into that fond, loving ‘Evan’ smile that Buck can never resist kissing off. So he does. He kisses Tommy once, twice, the kisses soft and chaste, both smiling into each other’s lips. He’s about to go in for a third, intending on deepening it, but Tommy pulls away, face a bit more serious. “I’m sorry.”

“What for?” Buck frowns, not wanting or needing any apologies, genuinely wondering if he missed anything.

“For being such a pain about this whole costume thing.” Tommy explains, and Buck wants to laugh. Yeah, okay, he was a little annoyed, but it’s just a little teasing, bickering, about Halloween costumes of all things. He can take the most ridiculous things seriously, but this? Nothing to get overly upset about. He’s about to say all that, but then Tommy continues, “I don’t know, maybe Halloween is just not my thing. I’ve never really been too into it.” He shrugs, a flicker of something wistful crossing his face, but it’s gone too quickly to decipher. “But it matters to you, and I love you, and I want you to be happy. So, I’m done being a party pooper, let’s do a costume. Next idea, no complaints, I promise. Whatever you want.” He says so sincerely, but there’s a hint of a ‘I hope I’m not gonna regret this’ in his eyes. Buck grins, a random, brand new idea showing up.

“Woody and Buzz? From Toy Story.” he clarifies, as if that wasn’t obvious – and clearly it was, from the look he gets. “What? You said gay couple.”

“I don’t think they were. And I thought you wanted scary- but fine, okay.” Tommy sighs, that fond look back on his face. “I said whatever you want. You wanna be the cowboy or the astronaut?”

“Hm.” Buck takes a second to think – and realizes that, actually, there’s an even better, easier idea. “Or we could just be cowboys.” He shrugs, and then he can feel his eyes go wide as the full picture pops into place. 

“Zombie cowboys.” He says, at the same time as Tommy, though Tommy’s sounds more like a question.

“You know me so well.” Buck beams, leaning in for another kiss. “Let’s be scary cowboy zombies. See, was that so hard?”

“You’re the one with a thousand ideas for a second. I didn’t even say no to everything at first, you just went through so many it was hard to keep up. I’m pretty sure you said cowboy back at the restaurant, too, and I didn’t even get a chance to say anything.” Tommy points out, pulling away from Buck, grabbing his hand again and starting to walk, his truck already visible in the distance.

“Not my fault my brain works like that.” Buck says mock-defensively. 

“I know, honey, I love your wonderful brain.” Tommy smiles, lets go of Buck’s hand to wrap his arm around his waist, presses a quick kiss to his cheek. “And I love you, my silly zombie cowboy.”

“Halloween is gonna be so much fun.” Buck is smiling widely, excited like a kid for his first Christmas – or, his first Halloween, more like. It’s seemingly no big deal, but also it’s his first Halloween with Tommy, and he’s excited – he’s excited for all the firsts with Tommy. He can’t wait to do everything and anything with him. “Are you gonna come by the station?”

“Of course, if I can. Gotta see how scary you’re gonna make it.”

“Wanna bet I can scare you?” He asks, just as they near the car.

“In the haunted house for children?” Tommy raises his eyebrows. “Sure, you can try. What are we betting on?”

“I have a few ideas.” Buck grins wickedly, crowding Tommy against the car.

“Oh, really? Well, I’m all ears.” Tommy grins, his arms wrapping around Buck’s neck, pulling him closer. Buck smiles into Tommy’s lips, kissing him, quick but lingering.

“Well, why don’t we go home and I can show you what I have in mind?”

Adam x Goth! Reader Headcanons

✦ With it being mainly a music-based subculture, Adam is not a stranger to Goth; being in a band and just having a passion for music, he keeps up with everything music related that people on Earth come up with, so he’s well informed on the genre and you basically don’t need to explain anything to him about it.

✦ He thinks it’s pretty neat that you’re Goth! Other than appreciating the music that you listen to and sometimes taking out his guitar to imitate the tunes, he thinks your style is, in his words, absolutely fucking rad. It’s rare to find somebody with such a good fashion sense in Heaven, to him the way other Angels dress is all the same, so it’s a breath of fresh air to have somebody around the house whose style somehow matches his.

✦ Yes, because when he’s not in his typical robe, Adam loves dressing a bit alternative, so he thinks you two match quite well. If you surprise him by wearing one of his band shirts while you’re also wearing your Goth makeup, he’s absolutely going to lose it and kiss you right then and there. He thinks you look so good and he’s not afraid of demonstrating it.

✦ He also loves the makeup; he thinks bold makeup looks are very cool and he’s quite surprisingly skilled with it as well, as he does his makeup before shows himself. He doesn’t take his mask off on the stage, but when he and the other band members celebrate they get to see his face and the look he came up with for the night. He’ll absolutely bring you along to those celebrations and brag about how good his partner looks, and how awesome you two look together!

✦ He tries to do your Goth makeup sometimes; he’s not the best at doing this on other people though, since he’s only used to doing it on himself, plus there’s some difference in the way you two apply your makeup of course so he’ll need some guidance and mutter some curse words under his breath... but it’s a fun and cute activity!

✦ You also get the privilege of doing his makeup the way you want it to. So you can technically make him Goth as well! Afterwards he’s definitely going to stare at himself in the mirror for too long and send a lot of pictures to Lute, telling her about how fucking awesome he looks!

✦ You two often dance to either his tunes or the ones of a song that you used to listen to back on Earth, while doing things around the house or simply to have some fun. He loves admiring you do it, he thinks you truly look like a vampire.

✦ The only thing he might find a little weird is if you used to engage in more particular activities that are common within the Goth community, like collecting bones or simply hanging out at the cemetery. But even then, he can’t really judge you as he is the leader of the Exorcists; he’s willing to accept you as his partner even though he might find some things about you quite unique or even odd.

I love the Louis and Lestat reunion so much.

I cried seeing modern New Orleans. I was lucky enough to travel there last fall. I went because of Interview with the Vampire, but the trip was really meaningful to me on a personal level too. It was the first place that I had traveled after becoming disabled and the first place I went since Covid. (my friend and I managed to do the trip in a Covid cautious way, which was important since I am still clinically vulnerable.) I will never forget how people went out of their way to make sure I had wheelchair access there, even around the crumbly old French quarter. I will also never forget crying at the Halloween parade because suddenly I was surrounded by people who like to dress up and have fun and exactly the same way that I do. it sounds silly, but suddenly I was in an entire city that matched my very specific nerdy type of freak, you know what I mean? So I think the city will always represent a kind of personal and story redemption for me.

The fact that Louis and Lestat reunion is based on both accepting responsibility and forgiving each other for Claudia‘s life and death is so special I think. They connect over their shared grief for her and their relationship. The show has never been about assigning blame or being deemed innocent of wrongdoing. It’s about how we live with the mistakes we’ve made, and the grief we have to carry. The true catharsis of the reunion was Louis thanking Lestat for vampirism, and the way that it will allow him a second chance to honor his grief in a way he hasn’t until now. Like that’s so beautiful and complex. Any other show would’ve made it just about them getting back together romantically. They’re not ready for that yet I don’t think. But the emotions they were able to share with each other in that scene were just so perfect.

In that scene I could really feel Anne Rice’s original purpose for writing the book. It was about processing grief for a child. And I think both Anne and her daughter felt really present in that scene because of it. It was just so perfectly done.

I loved Louis’s final scene, where he’s incorporated Paul and Claudia and the color yellow into the penthouse. He’s still friends with Daniel, he’s content in himself, and he sends this invitation to all the vampires who are talking about him. Maybe it’s an invitation to fight. As Jacob says, Louis always needs that friction, that fight in his life. But I think in someways it might be a step towards community for him. He presents his house as always being open, as being a safe place for vampires to hide from the sun. And how impactful would it be, if “I never join anything Louis” could suddenly become a kind of host of the vampire community? What a sign of healing that would be. I mean I’m sure it would be full of drama and he would have his hands full managing it, but the man likes drama. So I think it could work.

I’m so glad we were able to finish out Louis’s arc so definitively, and leave him and Lestat in a place where they can further reconcile, and Louis can be a part of Lestat’s rock arc in season 3.

But nono that is Absolutely an NBC dress!! I see the vision!! I am personally not as big of a Rollo fan but I DO think he is a fascinating little bug. I'm putting him in a little jar under a big ol' magnifying glass and observing him for forever. I like that Masquerade offered us a look at other mage schools and how they work, what villains they're based on, etc. I really appreciate him for that. I did actually really enjoy what we got to learn about him too. Fun stuff! Love Masquerade.

Since I brought up other games though,, I've been wanting to ask actually if you've ever looked into Diabolik Lovers? If you haven't and ever want to... I do want to warn you that the anime is NOT very good unfortunately </3. It's one of those animes that's just kind of a really shitty ad for whatever it's original media form was. It skips out a lot of important lore/character info, and doesn't really showcase each character properly since it tried very hard to focus on just 1 brother and failed. So the ganes/translations are 100% the way to go.

I bring it up tho bc it's my fave character's birthday today :D!! Ohh,, Reiji Sakamaki the strange little specimen you are <3 <3 my lovely wife that drugs people. I adore him. I think tbh you could like him too based on the stuff you usually talk and write about here. But obviously I could be very wrong! No way to actually know.

Being able to see what other magic schools are like and how they function (NBC having a student council in contrast to NRC's Housewarden system). I really hope there will be more events like it! Anyway, here are seven episodes of Buffy which I'd have given Amy Madison a cameo in.

The goal isn't to change the plot of any of these episodes substantially or to change Amy's overall arc (such as it is). Rather the idea is to do just enough work to make Amy feel like a recurring character with the weight of, say, pre-S6 Jonathan Levinson or pre-AtS Harmony Kendall. Somebody who is stil clearly a minor character, but who feels a lot more thought out than Amy herself often does.

I think you can do that with just a few strategically chosen cameos. Here are my picks:

1) S1E12 Prophecy Girl

Prophecy Girl brings back Jenny Calendar (previously only seen in I Robot, You Jane) and the previous week Out of Sight, Out of Mind had brought back Harmony (previously only seen in The Harvest). Both Harmony and Jenny would go on to be popular recurring characters, and I think making a second appearance in the first season would do wonders for Amy as well.

While I'm at it, I'd slightly rework Cordelia's story this episode -- cutting out her doomed boyfriend Kevin, who replaces Out of Sight, Out of Mind's Mitch without explanation and will never be mentioned again; and the slightly uncharacteristic friendly way in which Willow and Cordelia treat each other this episode. In my version of the episode, it would be Amy who roped Willow in to help set up the sound system at the Bronze for the Spring Fling, and it would be some of Amy's friends that they found murdered by vampires in the Audio-Visual Club.

(I wouldn't rob Cordelia of any of her other scenes, of course: she'd still get to drive her car through the school halls and bite a vampire.)

I think adding Amy like this would serve to remind the viewer that (i) Amy exists; (ii) Amy and Willow are friends; (iii) even with her mother gone, horrible things keep happening to Amy Madison.

2) S2E01 When She Was Bad

Nothing fancy here; just a quick establishing scene at some point to remind us Amy still exists (in the same way Larry makes a cameo at the beginning of Season 3). Have her show up at the library and ask if any of the gang have seen Jenny Calendar, because she's meant to be teaching a class but nobody's seen her all day, maybe? Rather than the approach that canon takes, where nobody seems to realize Jenny has been kidnapped at all, even though we know she was captured at least a day before Buffy goes to rescue Cordelia (and the gang spend all of that day at school, where Jenny Calendar should be working...).

Again, the point of this addition is to mainly remind the audience that Amy exists, but we're also setting up the idea that Amy might eventually look to learn more than computer science from Ms. Calendar.

3) S2E06 Halloween

Just one scene here as well: Amy commiserating with Buffy and the others, and admitting that Snyder "volunteered" her to go out accompanying kids that evening as well. The point being that we see that Amy has dressed up as a witch for Halloween...

(We wouldn't see Amy again all episode, and we wouldn't know whether she got her costume from Ethan's, but down the line the idea that Amy might have gotten a bit of a head start as a witch from her experiences this episode -- in the same way Xander remembered some of his military knowledge -- could definitely be a fun fan theory.)

If anybody asks Amy if she's comfortable dressing up as a witch after what her mother did, maybe she can reference back to the attack on the AV club or Ms. Calendar being kidnapped and suggest that she knows now that there are worse things in the world than witches...

4) S3E02 Dead Man's Party

OK, if I were rewriting this episode I'd find it hard not to make bigger changes. At the very least, I'd want to have a few more scenes from the POV of characters other than Buffy (so that there's less of a sense of Buffy's friends all treating her horribly for no reason). And who better for Willow to be pouring her frustrations out to than her fellow fledgling witch Amy?

Give Amy a line about "missing Ms. Calendar too" as well, and Willow's final speech to Buffy about spending the summer "trying to communicate with the spirit world" take on an interesting subtext.

5) S3E09 The Wish

This is an interesting one because I'm half-convinced Amy was meant to be in this epsiode anyway. It's the only episode before Amy gets ratted in which she's mentioned on screen (Willow tells us that she's heard some gossip about Cordelia from Amy, which is -- in canon, anyway -- the first indication we get in the whole show that Amy and Willow have started hanging out).

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Nancy's role this episode (in the alternate Wish dimension) wasn't originally meant to go to Amy. That's how I'd play it, anyway. (Of course, if Buffy didn't come to Sunnydale she wouldn't have been around to save Amy from her mom. But I think that's easy enough to fix: just throw in a line about Amy being grateful to Giles and the other Whte Hats for "saving her" from some unspecific fate, and make sure to establish that this version of Amy can't do magic.)

Of course, this Amy would have the same fate as Nancy -- fittingly, killed by Willow -- but I don't think we'd need to have that happen off-screen the way it does in the actual episode.

6) S5E22 Grave

I really don't think Amy's abrupt descent into magical drug addict works ... well, at all. So I'd like to see a much bigger change to her arc after being de-ratted (something like @idle-flower suggests here, for example). I just don't think her villain arc this season makes any sense (and I know it robs Willow of a lot of the moral agency she should have at this point).

Failing that sort of change, though, I'd at least like Amy's mini-arc this season to .. resolve? She gets the door slammed on her face by Willow all the way back in Doublemeat Palace and then we never see her again. We don't even know if she's staying with her dad, or if her dad left town, or what. How is she surviving at all? At least throw in a scene of Amy discovering whatever's left of Rack and looking angry and vengeful about it, surely? Remind us she exists, and that things aren't going great for her.

7) S7E12 The Killer In Me

You might object to this one on the grounds that Amy is already in this episode.

The thing is though, I'm not sure that episode's writers remember that she is? Amy is outed as being responsible for Willow's predicament, Kennedy promises to stop her, Amy snaps her fingers -- teleporting Kennedy away -- and ... that's it. That's the last we hear from, or about, Amy Madison. Not just in the episode, but in the whole show. She doesn't suffer any consequences, she never gets a face to face confrontation with Willow, there's no obvious reason why she wouldn't be free to try again and again. Surely we can do better than that?

At least give us a scene of Amy fleeing Sunnydale ahead of the First's wave of destruction, or reacting to Willow getting her own body back. Something that we can pretend amounts to closure for a character who has, after all, been a part of the show since the third ever episode. Even if her continued appearance on the show, season after season, wasn't ever something the writers conciously planned.

If a screenwriter and a director came up to you and said "Rocket, we have seen the light, Katie McGraff is the hotness, you're clearly the man with the plan, please help us come up with a movie or TV show that best shows off her talents as the leading lady," what would your top 3 pitches be? Knowing you have complete creative control of The Thing.

First of all I want you to know that "Katie McGrath is the hotness" might just become my tag for her because I love that phrase SO very dearly.

SECONDLY WHAT A GOOD QUESTION. I feel like I'm going to do a mix of both what I would like to see her in and also what I feel like (from the little of what I understand) her genre preferences are:

PROJECT NUMBER ONE: You know initially I was going to say "Some sort of dark fantasy and/or period piece" but then I remembered that I can just fulfill all of our wildest dreams and do a mini-series (because fuck multiple movies this is a pro "the importance of letting stories breathe" blog) of The Priory of the Orange Tree and casting her as Sabran. She's the right age, the perfect look AND all of our favorite things of looking gay and stern in a period/fantasy dress!!! (I'd have to think more on the rest of the cast but I'm up to the challenge and would devote a substantial amount of the budget to costume design)

PROJECT NUMBER TWO: A contemporary paranormal/supernatural thriller maybe a la Midnight Mass or Bly Manor or maybe Crimson Peak? (haven't actually seen any of these cause I'm a weenie but that's the kind of vibes I want) and make her a vampire. Or a ghost actually I think that could be a lot of fun. If we're going Midnight Mass/Mike Flanagan then Rahul Kohli's there because I want to see what sort of chemistry they can actually work with that's not 12 minutes on a CW show. I want it to hurt and I want her to have fun running around screaming maybe! Or biting people! Or both!!

PROJECT NUMBER THREE: some sort of historical documentary. Get her a cozy sweater, get her in a castle or some old ass building somewhere and let her just Go. Put a jaunty little soundtrack over it and boom instant hit.

Religion in Castlevania

So, uhm. Castlevania has a strange relationship to the concept of religion, right? The games are of course Japanese and to the average Japanese person Christianity is about doused in as much mysticism and alieness as Shinto is to the average white person. As such the games do kinda mirror this like many other Japanese media with European inspired settings. We will get a lot of Christian symbolism and maybe a line or two referencing it, but as much as the average western story using Shinto and Buddhism, it is barely more than set-dressing. It is not offensive or anything, just also not very in depth

The series meanwhile runs into the opposite problem. It is a western production first and foremost and in western circles the relation people have towards religion is... complicated. Especially when it comes to Christianity. Because the fact is that you really can only do wrong.

You show Christianity as something positive? Yeah, fuck it, you are doing white supremacist propaganda (because Christianity sadly is tied to that other believe as a vehicle. Not because of anything inherent to Christianity, just because of history). You show Christianity as something negative? Fuck you, you hate all Christians and are basically the antichrist time to boycot you!

Which leads to the interesting phenomenon that Castlevania has a Muslim character whose relationship with his religion is in depth explored. While Christianity... is somewhat iffy.

First and foremost: The only explicitly Christian characters we have are bad guy who get killed within the first season. Namely the bishop and the arch bishop. Who of course use their religion as a tool to spread hatred. In this case of witches. (Note to self: Write a blog about witch hunts.) And then there are of course the corrupted monks in season 3. The show does not go so far to imply "Christianity = Bad", especially as the show does have some no-dialogue characters who end up siding with the protagonists and what not. But... It also does not have an explicitly positive portrayel of religion, right?

Now, from our main characters outside of Isaac we barely know anything about their religious affiliation.

We know that Sypha believes in Jeshoa (Jesus) and some of the bible stories, but in a way that actually frames God as a vengeful, bad god, rather than a force of good. This is never further explored, though. It is basically two lines over the course of the series we get. All we know is: Yes, she believes it. She things Jeshoa was okay and that God is bad and hates the speakers.

And for the others?

We know nothing about the relation Trevor and Alucard have towards religion, and while there is like two very vague hints that Hector might be of Jewish descent we also do not learn much about that.

And it is kinda ironic, really. While the games do have very little in terms of dialogue linking Alucard to Christianity, there for sure is endless symbolism of him holding rosaries and what not. And it would have been interesting to explore.

Especially given that I also think that the relation between Dracula/Mathias and religion would be super interesting to explore and would be fun to see more about. But of course... we do not get that.

And while it is to be assumed that the Belmonts should be Christian... Well, outside of him cussing out God a lot, there is not a lot of him and his religious affiliation going on.

Which is kinda a pity. Because I found it makes for interesting storytelling. Especially in a world like this.

I mean, we know for a fact that priests can bless water and through this act turn it into a weapon against vampires and demons. And it would be such a fun thing to discuss, whether this actually means they get that power from God - or whether they just use a sort of spell. (Especially given that I somehow doubt that God is gonna channel his power through an undead bishop, you know? Making me think that the zombie bishop rather uses a spell.)

Side note: I would've totally loved to see Isaac use some Muslim prayer to hurt a vampire or demon. That would have been kinda fun - and it is something we barely see in media.

But there is of course more than that: The people in the Castlevania world (especially the series) live in a world where the existence of the afterlife is undeniable, based on the fact that people can literally summon souls from there. People can have a long discussion on whether or not that actually is hell - but it is undeniable that it is an afterlife. It is a place where souls move to after death.

And I do have to wonder how that would affect the people's relationship to religion?

I honestly never realized how interesting it is to write about religious characters. Because due to my own religious trauma, I just stayed the hell away from religion in my writing. Like, sure, in my own vampire novel there is a subplot about the main characters religious trauma (being a queer kid in a conservative Christian household). But she had left her religion behind and all that.

So... me writing Isaac in my fics was literally the first time I ever wrote a religious character in a story who was not framed negatively. And I learned that it actually... can do so much to enrich a story. Because it allows you as a writer to have yet another point of view to frame the story through.

And yes, it also ended up with me thinking a lot on religious backgrounds for the characters and their relation to religion - especially inside a world, where, again, the existence of an afterlife is undeniable.

And honestly, one of the favorite things to me in terms of writing was this bit about Gilles de Rais loosing his religion, upon realizing the corruption of the church. As a more gutteral and painful experience, than I have written before.

Also: Yeah, I have FlysEyes (who I have christened Nicolai, to give him a proper name) still a practicing Christian. Because that is kinda fun.

I also don’t really interact with a lot of lesbian media because it’s so sterilized. So often it seems that whoever wrote it was like sure we can have two women hold hands or peck on the lips as long as they’re feminine! As long as they don’t come off as *that* kind of lesbian. Butchness and lesbian masculinity are so often treated as dirty or not taken seriously which is really hurtful! 

And I completely agree that a lot of genderswaps rely so much on hyperfeminity. Slap a pair of boobs on a male character and give him long hair and make up and a feminine name like dude that’s a whole other character now 😭 (and I have to say that I hate it when characters are given silly versions of their names just to make it girlier like c’mon women with masculine/traditionally men names are hot!!)

Maybe it’s just me being butch4butch and projecting but butch!Daniel hits so hard for me like she is literally just canon Daniel to me but afab and how that would change her narrative. I oscillate so often on how I think Armand would be particularly because of his relationship with gender in the books. He’s androgynous but is that just because he didn’t fully mature? I feel like a lot of women are done growing by their late teens so would genderbent Armand be taller or have a different build because of that? It’s so fun to think about and I think she would play a lot with presentation in the 80s and be having gender talks along with the philosophical discussions with Daniel in that era.

Long story short I really love the gender aspect of genderswaps and masc women are so hot and like that is the appeal for me especially since we don’t get a lot of that! But exactly, either everything is sanitized ('aw lesbians love picnics and frogs and holding hands in their cottage core dresses!!') or the hyper femininity fetishized. Like I said in my tags, taking a cis man and making him a cis man who doesn't conform to gender stereotypes is no less of a gender swap. But like...society doesn't acknowledge butch/masc/studs, much less acknowledge that we can be attractive.

And YEAH like Daniel did so much solo travel, so much entering of spaces that might not be totally safe for a femme woman alone in the 70s so presenting more masc might be a safety net in a way. And like imagine Armand hearing this soft woman's voice on the tapes when entering Lestat's house but turning the corner and seeing someone like this-

And when Louis and Armand were together there's a big question of how much they were out in the world vs how Louis' grief kept them from fully entering and enjoying mortal spaces. So like Armand seeing women playing more with gender via clothing, the evolution of pants becoming acceptable for women to wear- would Armand have already embraced that, or by meeting Daniel would she feel free to play around with androgyny and masculine fashion more? I like to think it would be the latter, because their time together was such a period of exploration!

And you can also get into concept of being Other, with Daniel able to relate some way to Armand being othered as a vampire where she is othered as a gnc woman. There's just a lot to play with imo

I do have a Fang Gang group chat chapter from a couple years ago that’s kind of a “bonus” but I haven’t quite figured out how I’m going to post it here, as I can’t find any good fake text apps to make a groupchat. I may just type it out.

I’m actually so excited you asked me this question because I actually DO visualize in my head when I write my vampy boys!! When pt 1 was being written, I was loosely basing them off Black Cat Nero, though I kinda decided to leave it up to the readers which is why there’s not too much detail to how they look besides some of their hair colors. It’s mentioned in part 1 that Hongjoong has dark hair and wears a white Victorian style blouse top with puffy sleeves and a gray and silver vest. These are some of the styles of clothes I imagine (below) the one in the middle specifically makes me think of San because I have a vampire San imagine that I haven’t shared here yet and I clearly pictured him wearing that outfit so that kinda carried over to LW8V lol

This is going be a long response lol so there’s more below about how I visualize each member

Hongjoong has black hair and, like I mentioned earlier, wears Victorian style clothes—they all do, but I can imagine each of them wearing something more “toned down” every so often, (not Seonghwa lol) but I can picture Joong wearing something like he did for Paradigm!

Seonghwa obviously wears ruffly blouses and sometimes embellished jackets and tailcoats. At first I imagined his hair like Wonderland era, but now I more so imagine him with his current long black hair (it’s my favorite 🥴)

Yunho is blonde and I specifically imagine him with his hair styled like it is in the pic below. It fits him well and that’s also what my brain decided to picture so I’ve stuck with it! For clothing, Yunho kinda just wears stuff similar to what’s pictured below

Yeosang is blonde in the series with his hair from Black Cat Nero and/or Inception era. Though while writing part 3 I started to imagine him with his long black hair instead 😩 some other outfits I think Yeo would wear are like the one I added on the left from Halazia era

San has black hair and I picture him in a tight fitting gothic style vest and a white dress shirt underneath, though I can also see him wearing more “modern” things like a black silk top and of course I mentioned he was wearing a lace up shirt in part 3 of LW8V during the Medieval Times segment

Mingi has brown hair. In my mind, it’s usually unstyled and fluffy and I can see him wearing something like from Paradigm; a loose-fitting white shirt (untucked) with a few buttons undone and a loose gothic vest over the top

Wooyoung has long black hair because I’m attached to it and I have a thing for long hair. I imagine him wearing fitting gothic vests and a white dress shirt with small ruffles along the collar or something. When he goes out I can imagine him wearing black trench coats or something like that

Jongho has brown hair and, like the others, wears Victorian style clothing and coats, but he also has some more casual(?) tops like this one from Halazia era which I’m still in love with to this day. I wish the stylists would put him in things like this more often because he looks STUNNING and so pretty

As for your last question, it’s actually crazy you mention that because over the last 3 days or so I’ve been on character.ai messing around with some werewolf AU ideas I had for Chan just seeing if I could flesh out some ideas and I have two REALLY GOOD ones that I’d like to write!! I also have one that’s been sitting in my drafts for a couple years that I haven’t touched because I don’t really know where I’m going with it just yet lol. As for Chan in LW8V you can expect him to make a return with some extra buddies. I have so much planned for them for part 4 😈

I’ve come to the conclusion I just scare people off. In reality, I’m intimidated by everyone around me and find it hard to start taking, which may or may not come off as rude to people.

when I become comfortable with someone I start to become really sarcastic and joke around with them with witty banter. most of my humor comes off really insulting, and I’m brutally honest, but I’ll apologize and say it’s a joke or I didn’t mean it if it becomes a problem. even though I do have a hard time understanding physical social cues.

lots of people don’t like me or stay away from me because of my rude behavior. I’m not good with overly sensitive or overly annoying people at all because of that, and I can’t stand kids. Idiocy can get on my nerves too sometimes. I’m a huge animal person though. I have my moments where I can get really feisty, or very quiet and closed off. I’ve been told I’m also a laidback person. I’ve also been told I never know when to quit, and I find I hold grudges for certain things. It’s not as common now but I used to get called a vampire by other kids when I was younger since I had oddly pointy canine teeth. I find it funny, seeing how I am today.

I’m the type of person that has lots of opinions on things but I keep them to myself and bottle them up. If pushed far enough I’ll become unforgiving, and aggressive. especially with the types mentioned above.

I find the most comfort in just being in my room drawing, listening to music ( pierce the veil, deftones, system of a down, slipknot, rob zombie,,, sometimes radiohead, insane clown posse, jazmin bean or mother mother, etc. ), or even occasionally playing video games, reading, writing, or talking about a random conspiracy theory I have. I do acting in my spare time as a small hobby too, and I’m learning how to play electric guitar. I also work as a scare actor.

I’m a plushie maniac and when I fall asleep you can always see me cuddled up to one of them. I find it because I’m really touch starved. I also have this specific blanket I can literally not sleep without. Im also a caffeine addict, and I’m guilty of being very submissive and maybe even masochistic- and a bit of a pyromaniac. I dissociate or daydream a lot, so you can often catch me starring.

I suffer from a handful off mental and physical syndromes like asd, insomnia, asthma, depression and anxiety. These have all been diagnosed professionally, and I’m definitely not trying to make myself "quirky". unfortunately health problems run in my family.

Okay so...Surprisingly enough I can actually see it happening. One of the two sees a property they like, the other decides to be a taunting pest about it and in a quick exchange of pens and bitten real state agents, they somehow end up owning a place together. Leah probably returns there once every decade and so does Tristan but...It exists.

Leah is not allowed to threaten, harm, inconvenience or be overly critical of Aurora in any way, shape or form.

Tristan is not allowed to plot, scheme, or device nefarious plans and tortuous fates for Elijah.

If one of them is going to take advantage of the long periods of absence the house endures to convince some amusingly gullible humans the place is haunted, it is in good manners to invite the other to participate in the vampires impersonating ghosts fun.

Collecting a great number of owls, dressing them in tuxedos and telling the other his friends came to visit isn't a fun prank and the responsible deserves the quick cuts near and to the eye she got for four seconds or so from the rebelling birds.

Tristan's witches inviting themselves to the greenhouse and messing with the plants at their whim isn't perfectly fine and acceptable just because they can make them more poisonous.

Leah will give a real chance of enjoyment to the elaborated who's done it mysteries Tristan prepares for game night. Real murder might or might not occur.

Making her best and most exaggerated Sherlock Holmes impression won't be considered a form of cooperation, Leah.

Tristan will give a real chance of enjoyment to Leah's suggestion of modern activities she perceives Tristan is refusing to offer a fair try to.

Wearing a cravat and getting one of his old walking sticks for such excursions won't be considered a form of cooperation, Tristan.

We don't talk about the house when we are not inhabiting it. The house is a strange, confusing concept that implies Leah sometimes can be comfortable staying with someone for more than five days or that Tristan can occasionally enjoy living with a Mikaelson. The house only exists when we are there. @troubleah

Liveblogging Dracula Daily - August 11

Alright, I think today is day 3 of me playing catch-up? Wait, no, day 4. As long as I finish catch-up within a week I'll be proud of myself for this. I got a little more personal planning done for my Whumptober idea (I'm going to be posting those here and I can share some of the planning for it if y'all would like to see it)

Anyway, on to what looks to be a very long Mina entry!

Oh gods 3 am. I've been trying lately to go to bed around 3 am, and once school starts... oof. Oh Lucy is... unlocking the door in her sleep? Excuse me? Is she maybe not actually asleep but in some kind of trance or something? Because this seems extreme

Oh, she's outside in her nightgown. That's... risky for a number of reasons for a girl to do. I mean like in general now I never wear a skirt/dress without some kind of shorts or leggings on underneath (usually my dance shorts, when it's cold sometimes thin leggings). Mina are you doing the same thing??

Oh thank god she found her quickly. I love moonlight scenes, it always sounds super pretty and I sometimes wish where I lived got better moonlight (I live on a very foresty hill in a place with frequent clouds)

Ah shit. White face, red eyes. So how is Dracula also here then??? Or. Hold up. Have I been incredibly stupid this whole time and there's more than one vampire running around?

Girl, just wake her up! I know waking sleepwalkers can have some bad effects but like... I feel like this situation just might be worth the risk. Yeah, like that. She'll definitely be better off awake here

Mina is such a sweetheart, I've walked on gravel barefoot and when I was younger I would walk barefoot on woodchips and while it's doable it's definitely not the most fun thing to do

Oh fuck. She got bit. There's gotta be multiple vampires around then, right?? Yeah... I don't think tonight is gonna be the issue for Lucy...

Well I wasn't expecting that! I knew something was up with the sleepwalking but... shit. So there are multiple vampires around then, since I was informed that in fact Dracula cannot teleport. And now I'm wondering what's going to happen to Lucy, like is she gonna have to die? I don't want her to die. She's so sweet. Also was all the sleepwalking a sort of hypnosis, like what was going on with Jonathan?

Speaking of, are we gonna get back to him? I'm a bit concerned that he's been gone for so long

meet the main characters of my book!

you're gonna be hearing a lot about these idiots

#1: Laurie! (he/him)

Laurence Ashcroft-Gastrell (it's a mouthful, I know) is a totally normal 16 year old guy. His hobbies include reading and writing poetry, playing piano and desperately yearning for the ordinary human life he'll never be able to live because he was born a vampire. That's right - born. I really fucked around with vampire lore when making this guy.

Laurie lives in a ridiculously stereotypical goth mansion with his mothers - the severe and traditional Cecily and the gentle Marceline. They want nothing more than to keep their son safe from the dangers of the world, and they've succeeded! But in the process, they've raised a lonely and isolated young man who wants nothing more than to get away from them.

The story begins with Laurie finally enrolling at the local school, where he makes his first-ever friends, falls in love and gets roped into solving a case of mysterious deaths and battling an ancient evil. Not exactly the ordinary life he'd hoped for.

#2: Lola! (they/them)

Lola Amadi, first and foremost, is an artist. And as an artist, self expression and authenticity are among the most important things in the world for them. That's why they don't water themself down for anyone, even it means they've ended up with no friends. And although they're doing their very best to deal with the mental health issues inevitably caused by losing their mum as a child and living with ADHD, it's hard not to feel a little lonely sometimes.

Still, Lola makes a habit out of 'collecting' interesting people - the new boy who dresses like a Victorian goth and loves poetry, the eccentric leader of the school's Supernatural Investigators Club, the antisocial teen prophet plagued with visions of impending doom... Lola has always fit in better with the outsiders. In fact, it's thanks to them that this little group of outcasts even came together in the first place!

Life's not so bad when you find your people.

#3: Daria! (she/her)

Daria Levy is interested in just one thing, and that's the supernatural. It's been her special interest for years now, and she's determined to finally find some hard evidence of the paranormal in Willowbrook. There's a reason she's the leader of the Supernatural Investigators Club (it's because she founded it. And she's the only member).

Sure, it can be a little lonely having no one to talk to about the one thing that fascinates you most in the world and, yes, it's discouraging to have people make fun of you for believing in what you know must be out there somewhere. But those people are about to be proven wrong, because the moment Daria's been waiting for her whole life is finally here: a vampire has enrolled at Willowbrook High School, and she's going to be the one to learn everything she can about him.

#4: Angel! (she/he)

No one understand Angel Edwards. She's explained a million times that she's bigender, but her mum thinks she's just a trans girl, and her dad insists she's just a feminine guy. And he isn't going to hang around with anyone else for long enough to find out what they think. Who needs friends when you've got Bowie, anyway?

Except the weird dreams Angel's been dealing with since she was a kid are getting worse and worse, and there's only so long that you can deny they might mean something more than stress at school. There's only one place Angel can go where someone might be able to make sense of it all, and it's the Supernatural Investigators Club.

#5: Sebastian! (he/him)

As a trans guy, there's not much in the world that Sebastian Bautista can control. The mirror reflects a face he doesn't recognise, and the friends he used to have refuse to see him for the man he is. But, through the camera lens, he can shape the world into what he wants it to be. A world of beauty and of peace. A world where he is exactly the person he wants to be.

And Sebastian really is content alone, working on his photography and hanging out with the family dog. But his parents won't stop worrying about him making friends. Deep down, he knows they're right but after losing his friends just because he came out, he's afraid that no one will love the real him.

But after he photographs a strange and inexplicable phenomena in the sky, Sebastian is forced to rely on the people around him to figure out what on earth caused it, and it turns out solving a supernatural mystery is a sure fire way to accidentally stumble into the best friendships you've ever had.
