So I have learned that I am incapable of picking a reasonable number of favorites throughout this whole process and I even kept an extra song bc I wanted to make the gfx for it. Also the layout. But here are some of my favorites from 2023!

Some thoughts: I still don't know the purki members even tho I was OBSESSED with cabin fever. Busted top song of 2023? Multiple hags had comebacks this year & teen top's tt stood out to me when I was looking back (I don't count exo as hags even tho they are...)! Infinite's & tvxq's cbs were also really good! I still think knock knock by reve should've been the tt of chill kill. Loved my soloists in 2023 (jo yuri, kim sejeong, woodz, b.i, tabber, onew, d.o, kai). Several of whom were new to me. WayV may not be kpop, but their album was too important to me not to list. I joked that my top 10 was just the omy album, but it really was very good. EXO returned!! And we probably won't see them again until 2026 😭 Perfume best debut of 2023 /hj. I still don't technically stan the boyz somehow even tho I tuned in to all of their cbs this year and now know all the members. Also 🕯 pls let a.c.e drop a full album (as a full group 😒) in 2024 🕯and ilu everything I didn't mention but made the top 20. ok enough outta me 🤐

Favorite Color: Black and Purple (and nude colors). Black is just perfect, I once wanted to dye my room all black but it didn’t work out haha. I like wearing all black or black & white, I feel confident and I think it suits me best, and purple I just LOVE different shades of purple because it gives me a sense of power, tho I don’t wear the color much but even my phone case is purple rn.

Last Book: Umm the last book I read must be, “A good girl’s guide to murder” one day after hitting the gym I stopped by the bookstore and it caught my eye, then I sat at the cafe nearby, started reading and couldn’t put it down, there’s a murder going on and after five years a high school girl decides to reveal the truth behind it. *yes I am a sucker for mystery thriller books/movies* I totally recommend the series, I’m reading the second book rn.

Last Movie: “Hijack 1971 2024”. In one word HEARTBREAKING. I couldn’t stop crying in the end. And “The Crow 2024” I like movies with dark themes, and crows are one of my favorite animals, such clever creatures 👌🏻 I used a line of the movie in my recent fic hehe

Last TV-Show: I just finished watching the last episode of “Doubt” a not surprisingly mystery drama. But I didn’t enjoy it as much? I mean the story was ok but it could be better if wrapped up in 6 eps instead of 12, a little bit hard to get through but the cinematography kept me going, loved it👌🏻 *beside thriller-mystery dramas you can fool me with dope cinematography😺*

okay so for CONTEXTTTTT

i have diagnosed OCD, and like, roughly since the end of last year and the beginning of this one, the 'obsession' part of OCD that was negatively affecting me, was the concept of time. how fleeting it was. how it's basically unescapable ALL THINGS MUST PASS (get out of my head george harrison) that shit proper cold dead SCARED ME MAN. sleepless & haunting me in my dreams type shi. sometimes it still does. i try not to think about it too much

to cope, i found great comfort in the 70s-80s since at the time i was and still am hyperfixated on david bowie and that was sort of his prime (love his 90s-00s work tho.) i was also starting to think of how much parallels and similar experiences i have to previous generations and how it's not ALL that bad after all so far. i can still walk to a record store and roller skate if i really wanted to, or go to a diner.

okey here's where the life changing stuff happens. i decided i'd listen to pink floyd's the dark side of the moon. then TIME CAME ON. ohhhh god oh gosh golly god i was bawling and everything the whole song spoke to me on a molecular level. then i found out about DB's song also called time, and i ALSO crode to that. i was like. wow. i'm not alone on this feeling of utter desperation and helplessness as eventually all things Must Pass. (GEORGE HARRSION GTFO)

i used to be bitchy on how i whined i was part of the 'wrong generation.' i thought i was alone, but virtually everyone of almost every era has thought this. somebody who lived my dream life wished they had what i have now.

that's when i started to lowkey realize the parallels and oneness of human experience. i could go to a club in the 70s, and (granted the infrastructure and music remains similar) i could today. nothing would change on how i perceive events. there is no color filter on the past. unless you got huge TVs and stuff all over your house, you could walk around, and think it's the 80s. AND IT'S BASICALLY THE 80s. the way your parents or any other gen Xer saw the world with their *eyes* (not counting the changes in buildings and stuff) is the same as you today pretty much.

i already really enjoy subcultures, and particularly how they evolve and adapt. the indomitable human spirit prevails no matter how gentrified or 'banned' things become. nowadays i feel like there is No Youth Subcultures. at least, none that will pass the test of time and be memorable enough to be remembered in the books. nobody's gonna go to their child and proudly say: "when i was your age, i was a chav" or something. and i credit this to the lack of creativity allowed in the wider music industry.

HEAR ME OUT this is because 90% of youth subcultures had everything to do with music. and now, everything must be palatable. to be clear there's nothing inherently wrong with that type of music, but to me it speaks no soul. it has no risks. contemporary pop music is very much formulaic and this is because now more than ever entertainment (this also applies to movies btw) is more of an investment than passion. I WILL SPECIFY.

music production is so vastly different genre to genre, and we're not letting it flourish because of how much short form content is valued nowadays. LET ME COOK.

tiktoks are formulaic. algorithms are formulaic. WE'RE GETTING SOMEWHERE. there must be an instant hook or rift in music if you want to 'go viral' as a musician. digitized fame doesn't mean SHIT (to me), since clearly monthly listeners don't equate real world fans. album sales are being replaced with streams, and because of how ASS spotify treats its artists, newer, less established acts need to GET ON THE GRIND INSTANTLY to earn Coin. that means that to be smart and work with the exploitative system they're given, they have to make albums filled with 1 minute 30 second songs. so you can technically give them the most amount of streams possible. i feel with this formulaic approach, you can't get 6 minute long gutwrenching guitar pieces. no more 4 minute drum solos, hell avant garde experimental works were 2 people shout their names out at each other for 20 minutes. THERE ARE NO MORE FRANK ZAPPAS.

i'm not going to be one of those sad assholes who claim there's 'no more good rock music' and how it'll never be the same. as corny as this is, the next beatles or nirvana could be right under our noses and we'll NEVER know because of how fame is distributed. it sucks to see a small band beg on tiktok for streams to kickstart their career. but this is what we gotta work with. if we want subcultures to be created and thrive, we gotta go looking underground again, except unlike in the past it's a kajillion times easier now AND everything gets gentrified in 2 tiktok weeks. but this is evolution. MUSIC EVOLUTION

wowie good morning. i just woke up. this is not an extensive list but:

in the aeroplane over the sea - by neutral milk hotel. beautiful album that makes extensive use of the singing saw. seen as kind of meme music due to it being popular with a certain kind of 4chan user but it speaks to the soul. its about love and its consequences... it makes my heart strings sing

benji by sun kil moon. sun kill moon aka mark kozelek or however u spell it is funny bcus despite being such a huge arsehole he makes amazing music. benji is a reflection upon his life in a way that much of his music is but really feels like it strikes at a greater sense of nostalgia than any of his other albums

fetch the boltcutters. fiona apple is an artist who words fail me for. visionary in idea and execution, it was rly hard to pick just one album from her. when the pawn... could easily be here too. the piano n her voice go together like the sun and light

rave tapes - so many evenings spent listening to this in my beautiful flat in glasgow. perfect ambience for a winter evening or an acid trip. i saw mogwai live and it was like an acid trip in of itself... i feel this one way be a 10/10 more for personal and nostalgic reasons but it truly is an amazing listen in a dark room w/ some candles n headphones

in rainbows - it was again hard to choose from radiohead's discography esp when they have so much range (fog again, worrywart, gagging order, idioteque, pakt like sardines, creep, etc) and in rainbows doesnt rly capture that range fully imo. but every track on this album is a masterpiece and it is overall their finest work. faves are all i need (first song i ever listened to while at sea), video tape, and go slowly (disk 2!).

masterpiece - oh my GOD how am i to describe big thief? how on earth do i convey to u the rawness... the humanity of this album. it is a collection of tales of troubled youth put forward in the most beautiful, whole, perfectly imperfect way. favourites are real love, paul, masterpiece (tho i prefer the solo version) and VEGAS. what a song vegas is. it is a hymn. it is my prayer.

twin fantasy- the 2011 version. a love story about obsession and loss. about finding your person, your rock, and finding them gone... about the grief and the pain and the agony that comes from that. about a young man screaming against god, against the world, against himself, at the injustice of it all. it is innocent.

the milk-eyed mender - joanna newsom's music brings something from beyond this world into this world and any attempt to articulate this will fall short. if you want to listen to what the music of the fair folk is like then go and listen. it is a shame to say so little about truly life-changing music but nothing can be said.

the money store- i love everything on death grip's discography (yes everything) but seeing them perform get got live on 2cb was PHENOMENAL. beware was a close second n rly exmilitary could be here.... but i feel the money store is a better album overall and is more cohesive n whole. it shows the wisdom of a life of animal instinct.

I’m one of the newly obsessed Tops fans after watching squid game.. since he first shows up on screen I’m like “this character seems he could be an idol…and this dude is really really good at playing an idol..very natural” and then did my little research and here I am now in your inbox.. so.. I’m same age as top so I’d say I might have considered my self too old for boy bands back in the 2010s (but I am not NOW at 37 lol) and I’ve entirely missed his golden and dark days and I genuinely want to understand what the hell is going on with him.. I’m so intrigued by what I saw TOP was when performing, how shy and posed he was off stage for example in interviews, how quirky and random (and I agree he might be high functioning neurospicy) and so talented and classy and all over the place with his interests passions and work projects.. like.. I guess I wanna know him or his story a bit more, from people who were there this whole time.. I mean.. has he really tried to unalive himself? That pic of him in a wheelchair seemed staged to me no? Like why would there be pictures of someone after something like that.. if not for spectacle or pity? I mean I don’t know what to think or what to believe.. but I’d love to know your perspective (while I keep reading your blog in search of more answers).

Also in my humble opinion his role in sg was the perfect contrast to the heavy sense of doom the rest of the players were giving off.. it made the whole thing even darker cuz he was intentionally out of place mentally basically..I reckon it was a genius move, from a cinematic standpoint.

Im not Korean so I can’t possibly understand their culture, unfortunately, nor their unforgiveness and strict morality around drugs and whole the hate towards him, but I believe the hype now and the new international fans will boost his confidence.. I’m convinced it must take a lot of courage to do what he did, despite his reasons (broke or not, fame thirst or whatever) which we’ll never know obvs.. he should show up for promotion tho.. put up a poker face and expose himself if he wants to heal the wounds..

I think I'll have to go back and compile a list of links and sources for it all, but he did try to unalive himself when he was younger when he was briefly (and secretly) dating Kim Woo Bins current girlfriend (finance? Wife??) Shin Min Ah. They had a bad break up and everything wasn't working out well. He has some mental health struggles but he recovered a lot from that point. It was way before I'd say their big album Alive. Alive in 2012 was a turning point for their career.

Didn't he have like an anxiety attack or panic attack? Pills? Damnit. I gotta go comb through netizenbuzz blog (type netizenbuzz into google then enter T.O.P or bigbang into the search. Enter his name any way you can to see the list of stories). He did say that the industry teeats idols like Machines. He doesn't like the idol industry and made it clear how toxic the working conditions can be in that interview for the magazine where he has white hair and angel wings behind him.

He is multiple dimensional so while I do feel he was acting out an exaggerated caricature of his worse time in the industry some years ago, he really is one of the most intelligent and sophisticated men in the idol world for real, his art history and painting knowledge is incredibly expansive. I'll tell you now, my interest in him helped me land a great job once cause I learned so much about art through paying attention to him lol. I really wish he would go back to that.

I do miss the old top. But nearly everyone changes eventually while some people stay the same. I wish he was kinda like GD and consistency with his personality and interests.

What do you think of his wine so far? Like his investment in that? I think he should've pushed it harder, as hard as the space x project and create a non alcohol version of it so all fans of legal age can drink it.

Hi Vella, im not sure if it's really you but if it is actually you i have a confession to make. While growing up i wasn't much attracted to any specific girls, i found them cute and attractive but I didn't really had my favourite, this have changed when i saw you for the first time. However for me it felt like forever, for me it was millennium long walk that was just enough time for me to yet again reflect on what my type is, i didn't love a single woman before, not to imply i like men btw, tho I do find them looking handsome and maybe even cute a little bit, back in college there was this guy who acted "weird" imo but somehow this weirdness made me feel strange toward him, his clothes his poses his manner of speaking everything of it was unusual but i just couldn't keep myself from looking at him constantly. So anyway, i arrive at the burger joint. I made an order-2 cheeseburgers, nothing special really, i just like the classic you know, i bought 2 of them instead of just 1 because i knew that the time it will take for them to make my food i will be already hungry enough to eat 2 burgers in a row. I reached my hand towards my pocket, i pull out my phone from it. I checked my favourite forums and subredddits as one of my online friends( i have friends irl too btw) sent me a link to an album by this "Vella Wilde" person, i pressed play and one of the most horrific sounds of "music" blasted into my ears, i had suffered a whole hour listening to the entirety of the album hoping that my friend's taste wasn't that shit and that at least 1 song from this album will sound at least better than the sounds of my mom barking. It didn't, i finished my 5th cheeseburger as the album finished and i wanted to block my friend i had an intrusive thought stop me and do another thing completely, i searched who Vella Wilde is. As i got results i saw countless images of a beautiful angel who have finally put an end to the thoughts i had just before that, i found my perfect type, she was perfect, her breasts her hips her legs her lips her ethnicity her hair i loved every single inch of her. I thanked my friend and went to Record Stop to buy all the Vella Wilde albums i could find in there, when i played them on my record player back at home they suddenly sounded like a heavenly choir that brought me revelation on what music really is, i think that the Spotify uploaded audio lacks the audio depth and quality that only a good record player could provide, resulting in me and not hearing how good the album really is. Ok so my thoughts about the Queen I remix are quite sparce and the AI generated video for The Night Comes Down is still a huge elephant in this damn room in my brain that I'm trying so hard to ignore because that still makes me angry as fuck and I'm tired of pretending it's not an extremely problematic thing they did but I must say, the first impressions and early releases (TNCD especially and Modern Times a bit less) weren't great and concerned many, me included.

But the rest of the album is actually good. Sounds a bit weird and I think the drums here and there are a little excessive (uncanny?) but overall it sounds good.

I really don't know what the fuck happened with TNCD -and a bit with Modern Times- because it seriously made me think my earphones were broken and I still think it sounds bad and they exaggerated with the polishing. The restored video for Keep Yourself Alive also is very good! Like, that's it! No need to generate monstrosities with AI! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Since the beginning I admitted I was here first and foremost for the studio banter and backstage more than the songs, I've personally never really been the biggest fan of Queen I in general (I am obsessed with Queen II tho so I'm mildly worried). Milo is secretly an aghase and could talk about GOT7 for hours if you ask him about it. He's really passionate about them and their music. Vincent is a huge ENHYPEN stan. Their whole concept is vampires but despite that, Vincent really likes their music. He and Lovely started watching their survival show and then became obsessed with them once they debuted. He knows the point dance from each title track and learned the Bite Me partner choreo with Lovely.

Sam listens to Girls’ Generation as a guilty pleasure. He accidentally clicked on the music video for Gee back in 2008 and has followed them ever since. He was pretty embarrassed when Darlin’ caught him listening to it, but he was able to convince them to listen to it with him.

Gavin doesn’t really stan a certain group but likes a lot of solo artists, specifically Taemin, Kai, and Hwa Sa. He just feels so connected to their music and actively follows their releases. He was listening to some of their music one day, Freelancer asked what he was listening to, he showed them and they liked it too. They've definitely listened to Mmmh by Kai while making out. he is mr rover and he is coming over

Lasko doesn't listen to really big groups in the industry and instead likes the K-bands more, specifically Day6. He gets into his feels when he listens to them (especially since i hc that hes a hopeless romantic). He learned Korean just so he could sing Congratulations and Zombie even though theres an english ver.

Damien got really into SHINee in high school. He was kind of a toxic stan though 💀. He would get into fights on Twitter and (almost) physical fights at school. He would stay up until 3 am to start streaming music the moment the MVs would drop and then yell at people online to start streaming. But don't worry, he's calmed down now. He gets pretty nostalgic when Sherlock plays on shuffle.

Huxley really liked GFRIEND and supported them in any way that he could, such as streaming, buying albums, and voting them for MusicBank. He tried to show Damien their songs and played Rough but Damien wasn't really into it. He was devastated when they disbanded and Damien had to comfort him for a whole week. He's just such a wholesome girl group stan, it's adorable.

Caelum likes to dance and sing to a lot of PENTAGON and SEVENTEEN songs, even though he doesn't know what the lyrics mean. His favorite songs are Naughty Boy and Pretty U, respectively. Both groups have a lot of members, but he doesn't know all of them. He likes to watch the MVs with Freelancer and point out the few members he does know.

Elliott likes TXT's more chill songs like Fairy of Shampoo and Ghosting. He's a very relaxed fan when it comes to them. He knows all the members and their songs but isn't super active in the community or when it comes to buying merch. Whenever a new album comes out he'll listen to it for about a week and then put his favorites into a playlist. Sunshine started liking them because of him and probably asked him to make a dreamscape that was a TXT concert.

Blake isn't really into it but randomly listened to Love Scenario by iKON and cried to it after looking up the lyrics. He had it on repeat for a whole week.

Guy fell into the “I just want to know their names” trope with TWICE and BTS. He thought it would be funny if he randomly/ironically knew the members’ names and ended up being a HUGE stan of both. Bought every album, lightstick, and a lot of official merch. He’s been to a lot of their concerts and literally screams the fan chants. He biases Jin and Dahyun and has their photo cards in his phone case, as well as an RJ sticker.

Geordi saw NewJeans in a Coca-cola advertisement, decided to check out their music, and ended up really liking their music. It introduced him to K-pop and he casually listens to a lot of groups, but NewJeans is his ult. Their songs are really catchy so they end up playing in his mind 24/7, sometimes somehow mixing with the Tetris theme. He likes all of their songs but his current favorites are Super Shy and ASAP.
