i am a Dark Daenerys believer. no, i don’t hate her - in fact, i really love her, although i do hate her show counterpart - I just think her arc is heading towards a dark path and being a villain protagonist is the more interesting route for her character.

I know that t/b dynamics in fandom are Serious Business, but I'm pretty new to the shipping side of things and don't really understand why people are so incredibly intense about it. Like I get that it's a characterization thing sometimes, but I don't understand why if you like the characterization up until a sex scene, that it would make you not like the fic I guess? Zero judgement here, just curiosity!

yeah, so i think the easy (and correct) answer here is just immaturity. when your life is smaller and less rich, you care more about the few things you have in it. in general i think that's pretty common when you're young, and everything feels like the end of the world, but you're not even like, paying rent lmao.

but i will speculate a little here on maybe some other things (fandom meta, devil's advocate) under the cut, 'cause why not?

on ships -

from what i have seen, which is from the lens of someone whose fandom experience is almost entirely ship fandom and not gen, i think that ship fandom in general tends to be more toxic. this is especially so with big ships where there is a lot of content. in rarepair spaces, i think people generally tend to be nicer and more appreciative of any content for their ship. even if they don't like it, you don't shit where you eat. in big ships like stsg, well, there's a lot more room to shit.

in FE3H fandom, i was mostly into rarepairs, even ultra rarepairs at times. most everyone i interacted with was lovely and open-minded, and encouraged all kinds of content for their little ship. but from everything i heard about the Big Ship (Sylvix), those motherfuckers were fighting for their LIVES. although i don't think there was a ton of t/b discourse, mostly just clique-y shit and interpersonal wank. but when you have interpersonal wank, it's pretty common for people to find some extremely contrived fake moral reason to justify simply disliking someone and wanting to attack them. so who knows.

also, last note on ships - i would strongly suspect that multishippers are more normal about things in general. single-ship culture very very often leads to us vs. them conflicts because there is a 'loss' when content is made that is not on your 'side'. if you multiship and win either way, you can be a lot happier in fandom lol. i'm not making an ethical judgement on multiship vs single-ship btw, but in terms of like, economic value, if you can multiship, you'll objectively you'll get more bang for your buck.

why do people get so invested?

this could be because a lot of us in ship fandom are writing and reading ship fic to explore our own feelings, or experience them vicariously through characters (consciously or subconsciously). my best friend and i have extreeeeemely different taste in books. i go for very characterized, intimate pov books, and she tends to prefer a more distant narrator and writing style. unsurprisingly, the vast majority of her fandom experience is in gen fandom, whereas for me it's almost all ship.

if you personalize your media to yourself in this way, maybe it's a little easier to get invested? i'm not sure though, because there's probably nothing that could get me to leave a hate comment on a fic/send hatemail to an author. i can't even get the energy to leave comments on fics i love sometimes (this is a bad i am bad i am trying to be better). i can't relate to people who don't automatically follow don't like, don't read.

ALSO i want to note again that so, so many people want so badly to get fucked by anime man gojo satoru. i think they see him taking dick as a blow to the masculinity they are attracted to and therefore may twist it into an attack on their attraction. this is just speculation but, idk, it's something i think about. obligatory 'toxic masculinity hurts us all' and 'fellas you need to kiss the homies goodnight'

without making a value judgement on this behavior (hating a fic once you get to the sex scene), i want to play a little devil's advocate here and talk about characterization in fics in and out of sex scenes. so here's my thesis statement:

sex is really really really fucking hard to write well

smut quality is incredibly subjective to begin with, because everyone has different tastes. this is true of real porn too, of course! in smut, there's so many things that can be a turnoff - specific terms (cunt vs pussy (afab terms are a whole other can of worms) or dick/cock vs his embiggened turgid needlessly hard rod (which is my preference, of course)). bad choreo can be a deal breaker - unrealistic or inconsistent twister-style maneuvering. and then, of course, there's dialogue. we all know the porn moans. well, fanfic can fall prey to the porn moaning of it all.

so it is indeed true that you can like the characterization of a fic up until your boy starts porn moaning, and suddenly your complex tsundere is saying 'omg put it iiiiiiiiiiiin'. so, yes, i understand how seeing bad sex can make you sour on a fic. now, is that fair? maybe? there's a lot of bad fanfic and bad smut out there, because most of us have to write bad shit before we can write good shit. however the inevitability of that does not mean that people have to like bad smut. (still literally never worth sending hate over, obviously)

this doesn't cover all scenarios of someone changing their mind on a fic when they get to the t/b, but i think it is probably a hidden factor in a good amount of it. seeing a character start acting/talking differently and attributing it to t/b rather than clunky smut dialogue could be part of this whole general "ew I don't like this dynamic" thing.

maybe i would compare it to omegaverse, where characters in heat/rut just... become different characters in some fics. it's sort of a whiplash. but unlike omegaverse where you go in expecting that, on regular fics, people don't tend to tag "i don't know how to write smut dialogue". it can certainly be immersion breaking. for a longfic, if i like it, i might just skim through bad sex. but if sex is front and center in the fic, then i'd probably just click off (and again, oh my god i would never send hate about dick in ass)

How large does the age gap have to be to make it uncomfortable?

Minor/Adult, as a normal person, is completely off the table, and also mentor/mentree makes me uncomfortable. This goes without saying.

I have two old OCs that are 43 and 55 respectively, so I'd say 10 years gap is okayyyyy-ish...? As long as it's a reasonable one (ex. 34 and 44) with both parts as CLEAR adults.

Are you selective when shipping?

HOO BOY. YEAH. I need to be comfortable with someone and definitely have a trial ship period to see if they click, and I only ship with people I have talked OOCly. That's not negotiable, sorry. I like discussing our replies with my partners when we can get around to it or I'll cry (this is a joke).

Not a lot! I usually select a few people I'm comfy with and sit in a corner huddled with them. I didn't had particulary good experiences with ships before making Kaeya, so I'm naturally a big cagey when it comes to that. First, asking “Why don’t you think it’s pedophilia?” and then listing reasons why it wouldn’t be considered pedophilia is confusing. Let’s look at why your comments rub me the wrong way.

Allen is 16 years old. He’s not a prepubescent child, as you also pointed out. Therefore, any relationship he’s in is not pedophilia.

Age Gaps do not equal pedophilia. Like, full stop.

You are conflating pedophilia with “ship I am uncomfortable with/don’t like.” Which is one of the reasons I’m fucking pissed with antis’ use of such a serious term. How am I or anyone else supposed to know if someone is an actual pedophile when idiots go around calling any ship they don’t like pedophilia and labeling shippers pedophiles for it?

Calling fictional ships pedophilia creates alarm-fatigue. This makes ACTUAL CHILD PREDATORS have an easier time finding ACTUAL CHILDREN to abuse. Antis have made it easier for real predators to hide and have not done one single thing to help kids in need. While they’re out harassing shippers, they’ve created such an unstable environment where we can’t trust each other when it comes to such a serious issue as child abuse.

Second, asking if age gaps bother me is a complicated question. Let me lay out some information for you.

Anything I read/write/consume in fiction DOES NOT MEAN I CONDONE IT IRL. This is true for anything, not just relationships. I may ship a teen with an adult in fiction, but I would not necessarily condone that relationship IRL. Life is messy, muddy, and things are never black and white.

Age Gaps are not inherently abusive. My own parents have a 10 year gap in their age (and before you ask, my mother is the older one), and they’ve been happily married for over 30 years.

My taste in ships is not related to whether or not they have a gap in age. Some ships that have age gaps click with me. Others do not. It’s not an all or nothing scenario.

Thirdly, whether or not a ship bothers me doesn’t mean shit. My opinion is not right or wrong. It’s simply that–my opinion. I know many people hate Poker Pair. But I also know many who love it. And after spending years in fandoms, I can tell you a few things about shipping in general.

YKINMKATO (AKA: Your Kink Is Not My Kink And That’s Okay). It’s okay if you think Poker Pair is squicky and the age gap bothers you. THAT IS TOTALLY FINE. But what you might find squicky and gross, other people absolutely adore. We’re all different people with different tastes and needs when it comes to fiction. As long as we respect each other’s boundaries, it’s fine. No one is putting a gun to your head and telling you to read a fic or look at fanart. Block tags you don’t like, use xkit, or hell–block users who produce what you don’t want to see. That’s what those tools are there for.

People ship things DIFFERENTLY. Look up any ship for any fandom, and you will find and endless amount of fics on various topics. Some are fluff pieces. Some are hardcore smut. Some are riddled with angst, violence, and abuse. When you look at Poker Pair, you automatically see it as something that makes you uncomfortable. I don’t know if you dislike like it because of the age gap only, or if there are other factors, but parsing down a ship and calling it abusive because of an age gap is really shortsighted and uncreative. Tyki is a villain, and fandoms have been shipping heroes and villains since the dawn of time. Ain’t nothing stopping that train. But what you may not understand is that, while some people see Poker Pair and want to highlight the unsavory bits of the relationship, others might want to explore softer sides. AND BOTH OPTIONS ARE OKAY! Personally, I love writing Poker Pair fluff because I think that if these two weren’t enemies, they would have such a different life and I’m so weak for that.

Censorship is bad. Full stop. It doesn’t matter if I like something or if I find it repulsive beyond all measures. No one is qualified to decide what is and is not allowed in fiction. I studied library sciences in college, and we had an entire course on censorship and copyright. (BTW, librarians are badasses.) Once you censor something because you find it abhorrent, the slippery slope begins. Anything can be considered unsavory, and once you give a person or a group of people powers to censor art, you’ve lost your freedom of self expression. All you need to do is look at China and their censorship laws in place right now to know that once you start down that path, there is no stopping it. So, even if I thought the age gap with Poker Pair was unsavory, I would still support people’s rights to ship it and make art/fic of it. I, nor anyone else, have the right to judge it.

I have a complicated history with Poker Pair. When I first joined the fandom, any ship with Tyki in it bothered me. I couldn’t read fics with him and I couldn’t bear to look a shippy art with him. Part of it was my own personal hangups. Part of it was the content I found for the ship.

But after a while, I grew to appreciate Tyki as a character. I started shipping him with Lavi, then Allen and Lavi in an OT3, then I was able to ship him with Allen solo. The change happened when I read some of my close friends’ fanfics–people who shipped Poker Pair and adored Tyki and Allen. Reading those fics basically opened my eyes. I could see the ship in a new light. It helped pave the path for me to open up to other ships, and eventually gave me the confidence to be the multishipping/rarepair queen I am today.

Look, Anon. I’m not saying you can’t be uncomfortable with age gaps or Poker Pair or anything else for that matter. Some things will bother you, and you’ll never change your mind. And that’s okay. All I’m saying is that opinions and views can change, and the way one person sees things is never the same as someone else.

I’m okay with Poker Pair and you seem to have a different opinion. And that is fine. All I want is for people to be respectful, keep their hate out of fandom tags, and stop harassing others over what amounts to lines on paper.

That ofc depends on the muse but I can say with certainty that none of them would date someone who’s much, much younger than them in a romantic ship. Abel and Lucille have a gap of at least 6 years I think, but the mental age gap still shows now and then, so... I think that’s something I focus on more than a physical age gap. It’s just logical that Davey’s priorities and mentality would never correspond with the ones of a person in their 30ies; they’re too different.

Chemistry is all I say. For some muses I am more picky just because they are difficult to ship with, that’s hardly due to the other muse we’re writing with but my idiots themselves.

uhh quite a bit methinks, but nothing involving r*pe/abuse/toxicity and all that jazz. not as like a serious ship anyway. like i’m definitely never ever open to writing r*pe, but if we were to have our muses in an abusive/toxic relationship as a plot device in a thread that would inevitably lead to a break up, i think that would be fine. but only as a plot device, never an actual ship-ship.

listen as long as both muses are of age, i’m not too prickly about age gaps. now if one muse is not of age, that’s a different story. i like to think i’m well-versed in the legality of certain relationships, so for example, if one muse is below the age of consent and the other one is above, the age gap could only be four years at most and that’s stipulating that the ship will not be sexual in nature. i refuse to write smut with characters who are minors, but romantic relationships are more or less fine within reason. i know that might be an unpopular opinion but i actually did the research so that’s my stance on the matter.

4.   ARE  YOU  SELECTIVE  WHEN  SHIPPING? :

more or less. i’m only selective in that our muses must have chemistry before we decide to ship them. as long as there’s ample evidence that they could develop romantic feelings for one another, i’m willing to consider it. of course, that “evidence” also includes the willingness of both muns to write them as a ship. even if ic our muses get along swimmingly, there’s a chance i’m just not interested in a ship between them.

once it reaches the point of genitals being mentioned in any way (e.g. “stirring in the loins” or things like that), it needs to be tagged and put under a read more. not that i’m willing to write it or that i think they’re sexual organs, but gratuitous mentions of breasts are included in that. the only reason i’m not willing to write that in particular and that i’m uncomfortable writing smut with female muses is because it gives me major dysphoria. i’m more than open to fade-to-black though.

Top 10 Naruto Ships

Tagged by @goatville and @fher43 It was wayyy more difficult than I thought LOL. Also, this turned out to be super fking long, wayy longer than needed LOL.

Honestly, I don’t really hardcore ship anyone outside of the first one lol... Soo besides the first ship, these are not in any particular order. They are ships that I like, but generally I don’t hardcore ship them. Also, this is all mostly based on the manga. 

1. Sasuhina - My favorite ship since middle school! I just love the dynamic between these two. Even though it is a crackship, I feel it is the crackship that had the most potential to become something more. Honestly, I love the dynamics that these two bring. Their contrasting personalities, physical appearance, and background just seem so well meshed that if the manga was written differently and better, they could have definitely had some sort of relationship with each other (romantically or not, shame Kishimoto didn’t flesh out their backgrounds more.) Another reason why I like this ship so much is because of how much freedom it gives me to develop the relationship between other characters since they are so connected to one another as well as their backgrounds, something that I felt wasn’t done enough in the manga. It just gives me so much room to develop everyone around them because it takes a lot of imagination and creativity to connect these two characters and develop their relationship. Fanfiction, Fanart, Doujins - I love them all! Although I haven’t contributed much to this ship (but I do try), this will always be my OTP of OTPs <3 

2. Nejiten -  I WILL NEVER GET OVER NEJI’S DEATH. Honestly, I don’t know when I started shipping these two. I just always thought that they would naturally end up together in the manga, but sadly that didn’t happen. When I first saw them together, my first thought was  “oh, they’ll probably end up together.” I can’t really explain it, but that’s just how this ship was for me. Fanart is amazing and while I don’t read fanfics for this ship, this was usually a common ship in a lot of SH fics that I’ve read. It really made me like this ship more because of the way their relationship was presented in fanfics, aside from the manga of course. 

3. Nejihina (BROTP; one-sided) - This ship really grew on me to be honest. I didn’t like it at first because of how rocky their relationship was at the beginning. However, fanart and manga overtime really had this ship grow on me. While sasuhina is still my OTP, this ship is a guilty pleasure. I mostly ship it as a brotp or one-sided on Neji’s part, but almost never mutually romantic except for the occasional fanart (SH is my OTP afterall). Not a lot of people would agree with me, but I felt that Neji at one point or another had secretly loved Hinata romantically. I really didn’t see it until his death, but that was probably the point where I started believing it. BROTP-wise, I think this ship is really underrated and underappreciated. I think they have a strong sibling-like relationship that I wish the manga would have went into more detail with (I hated how it was introduced and then brushed aside -_-). Afterall, you don’t just stop hating someone overnight, it takes time to really develop a strong bond with one another, especially if that hate almost caused the other person to die. Not to mention, their bond was strong enough for Neji to throw his life away, including his dreams and goals for himself and the clan (WHICH I WILL NEVER GET OVER). 

4. Sasuneji (BROTP; Rivalry) - Alright, this one is purely due to reading fanfics. I never really thought about this ship, but it was always there in a lot of SH fanfiction so it eventually grew on me. I think this ship would have made a great rivalry in the manga. While Neji never grew to be as strong as Sasuke by the end of the manga, he was still regarded as a prodigy genius and was still very strong for his age. If the manga was written better, Neji could have become one of the strongest Shinobis, not as strong as Sasuke and Naruto of course, but still one of the strongest. I really wanted to see these two fight each other and hoped that the manga would have given it to us. I mean seriously, 2 regarded geniuses from the two most powerful clans in Konoha, each with one of the three great eye dojutsus never fought each other????? Then again, the manga didn’t do Neji any justice anyways >_> (BTW he’s not even my favorite character, but can you tell how salty I am?) 

5. Narusaku - I always thought they were cute together. This was also one of those ships that I thought would naturally happen, but sadly didn’t. I like the relationship between these two and thought that the manga didn’t do a good job developing their growth as the characters that I thought they could be and were. However, fanon narusaku makes up for it, especially with their amazing fanart :D

6. Kibaino - Saw cute fanart one day and instantly fell in love with them~ I wish there was more fanart of them TT-TT I think this dynamic is interesting because these two are both very impulsive and hotheaded, yet are completely different from one another. This ship also leaves a lot of room to explore since they never got to interact much in the manga, so there are many possibilities in which this ship can be developed (romantically or not) without taking away from the characters. While I multiship Ino a lot, this is definitely my OTP out of them all. Plus, they are a cute couple in general <3

7. Shikatema - I felt that the manga really did a good job developing their relationship, even though they were side characters. The relationship was subtle, but hinted nicely throughout the manga. It was also developed in a way that didn’t take away from their characters nor did it make them seem OOC, something that I appreciated. Out of all the canon ships, this was the one that I liked and agreed with the most. 

8. Itasasu (BROTP) - I wish the manga would have given them a happy ending =( They were siblings and had a good relationship going until things happened and UGHHH I really wish they would have been able to share some good moments together before the manga ended TT-TT I feel a lot of people, and the manga itself, downplays how much trauma Sasuke went through because of what Itachi was forced to do in order to preserve Konoha and with what Itachi had to go through as well. I know we all joke around and make memes about Sasuke and Itachi, but it’s honestly really tragic and sad with what they had to go through. Seeing your entire family murdered by the person you had loved, trusted and admired is something that affects you for the rest of your life. Being the person who had to slaughter your own family, lover, friends, and comrades is something that will always haunt you. This relationship was not explored enough and could have definitely been more developed (I mean wayyy better developed) than what the manga gave us. 

9. The Girls (Hinata, Sakura, Tenten, Ino, Temari, Karin BROTP) - The manga never gave them enough positive development independently, with each other, and with their teams. I love seeing how they interact in fanfics. Although it’s really difficult to find ones that don’t feel too OOC to me, but this is more of a personal preference than anything. I think it’s interesting to explore since they are all different from one another. I especially like seeing Hinata and Tenten, Sakura and Ino, Temari and Ino, Sakura and Karin, Hinata and Ino, Tenten and Ino, and Sakura and Hinata. 

10. Kibaten (BROTP) -  Honestly, it was really hard to decide the last ship, but this one really grew on me as of recently. I never thought about this ship until I came across a particular fanfiction, where they both were interacting together to help Hinata. I think their personalities would match pretty well together, and I could see them being good friends.

What’s your OTP for your Muse?:  Each single one of my ships are my OTPs, tbh. They are all different.

What are you willing to RP when it comes to shipping?: Almost anything you like. I’m not a fan of pre-established relationships because there are so many things about Eric that I haven’t written up on his about page and that muses have to learn about - but what’s what he would tell a partner. Other than that, we can go with a lot of fluff (and a good portion of angst), friendships, one-night stands, whatever you like, really. Eric is a huge flirt, though, so beware.

How large does the age gap have to be to make it uncomfortable?:  Personally I don’t like huge age gaps, but whatever. An absolute no-go is with a muse (and mun!!) under 18; everything above 21 is absolutely perfect. This is also Eric’s preference, btw.

Are you selective when shipping?: Not really. I’d like to say I am, but that wouldn’t be the truth. I ship with chemistry, which means that when our muses click, I will already ship it. What I absolutely don’t like is when someone chooses their muse to go straight for a ship. Eric will usually block it.

How far do steamy moments have to go before they’re considered NSFW?:  The moment hands wander down south. Kisses are a-okay and not considered NSFW. Once any genitals are mentioned, I will tag it with NSFW (but not write it under a read more because srsly what’s the use of that? I don’t use any icons for explicit sex scenes).

Does one have to ask to ship with you?: No. But I also don’t like to be asked because like I said I ship with chemistry. As long as the other muse isn’t physically a wrinkly old man/woman, I’d say it’s fine.

@vagantum-custos is just so beautiful, okay? The ship Shazzle and I are building with Aeona just melts my heart it’s so wonderful and at the same time it hurts me so much. HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE?:

In general, across the board for me, I’m pretty leeway with this. I mean nothing illegal obviously like having someone underage with an older person. And I don’t exactly feel like someone in their 50′s/60′s would work with someone in let’s say...their 20′s? But I mean it generally would depend on the situation/characters. For Laguna specifically, there really is no discussion (-points to question below-)

ARE YOU SELECTIVE WHEN SHIPPING?:

With Laguna, I am extremely selective. In fact, he’s the only character of mine that is, he’s actually single-ship only. Simply because I am so invested in the Laguna/Raine ship that I can’t imagine him with anyone else. And tbh, the game invests so much into the ship and they were so happy and sweet and perfect that how could you break them up? Lol. Anyways, there a few, very scattered exceptions. Mainly pre-Raine, younger Laguna...i.e. like his brief relationship with Julia. And of course AU’s/crossovers have a slight chance as well, though the likelihood still isn’t super high. Sorry, this is the one muse of mine I’m picky on! Though, in all honesty, Laguna basically acts like a Universal Dad to everyone, so the opportunity to ship are gonna be rare and few and far between anyways XD

HOW FAR DO STEAMY MOMENTS HAVE TO GO BEFORE THEY’RE CONSIDERED NSFW?:

As I said before, Laguna is one of only two muses I can’t smut with. I can still go pretty far though, I’ve written scenes before with heavy making out and basically just leaving it off/fading to black before they actually start anything so.... Basically anywhere up to feeling up each other? Like once you get to point of ‘getting below the belt’, lol, I would say that’s my limit with Laguna.

With my other muses you see it a decent amount. (Actually, surprisingly...considering his personality, my Squall is the blog I’ve done the most shipping on so far!) Shipping is not my main goal with RP but it is certainly something I enjoy as well.
