i kinda get why people ship double trouble with catra (provided that there isn't a huge age gap bc it's hard to tell how old dt is). it would absolutely be an unhealthy ship but it would be miles better than c//a because double trouble was the only character in the entire series who knew how to put catra in her place.

💚DT x Catra thoughts? i like them as sort of toxic friends-with-benefits during season 4

I love Catrouble! I tend to think of their dynamic post-war more often because I love fluff, but I have an idea for one way the ship could have gone in season 4.

Personally, I try to stay away from anything that would be legitimately abusive for my own comfort (no shade to people who like to explore these dynamics in their own shipping/fanfic!), so mine isn't so much "toxic" as it is "bad for both people because neither are approaching it from a healthy angle."

Long post again because I can't be stopped. Not as long as my AU ask, though.

So, they meet each other in season 4 and hit it off almost immediately. DT fills an empty hole in Catra's heart that she'd been trying to ignore, and it feels nice to have a "best friend" again. Someone more competent than Scorpia. Someone who encourages her villainy. Someone who really seems to get her.

They're devious, they're diabolical, they're manipulative and smooth-talking and just ever-so out of reach. The kind of person who won't hand their affections over easy, but will deliver once you get them. The unattainable loyalty of Double Trouble--this is what Catra wants. She wants to be their friend because they've made it obvious they're only hers for the right price.

Or, so it seems...

DT distances themselves from others as a form of self-protection. They can't be stabbed in the back if there's no one there to do the stabbing, right? So, they put on this facade of an uncaring, cold mercenary who wants nothing from their clients but money and chaos. And, although that isn't entirely dishonest, DT had to admit that they saw friendship potential in Catra. They were telling the truth when they said, "I knew there was a reason I liked you." In fact, it may have been something about Catra that pulled them to work for her first, even though they could have worked for either.

Perhaps they saw a bit of themselves in her. Here was someone positively diabolical, someone who pushed others away and pursued her goal with utmost ferocity. They could respect that. They saw their compatibility right away, and that's why they came to her first. They gave her an offer she couldn't refuse--after all, if she did, they'd just turn around and offer their services to the Rebellion. But they knew she'd accept their help, and accept she did.

As they got to know her better, their attraction to her grew. Sure, she was easy on the eyes, but she was really hot when she was screaming orders at people and laughing about her evil plans. They wanted to indulge her hunger for chaos. They wanted to make her smile and laugh whenever they could. Their heart started skipping beats when they'd call her. Damn it, they were falling hard. They hid it well, though--Catra hadn't a clue about their true feelings.

In fact, she was trying to ignore her own. Maybe it was that slutty back window. Maybe it was the way they made fun of Glimmer. Maybe it was the blond hair poof. Whatever the reason, she started to look forward to hearing from them, even if it wasn't mission-related. Sometimes just to talk.

When DT stopped by in person, not just over video, Catra tried not to let on how much she enjoyed it. She'd tease them, act disinterested, but it didn't fool DT. They could tell they'd taken up residence in her mind. They wondered if she thought about them often. If she thought about them like how they thought of her. If she thought of them like that.

So, one night, they propositioned her. Promised that, for an extra fee, she could have some real fun with them. They offered to turn into anyone she desired, hoping she'd pick them, but happy to do whatever it took to get in bed with her.

With uncharacteristic timidity, she asked them to shapeshift into Adora.

Ouch. That stung more than they expected.

Well, they were being paid, so they could oblige. Catra was very receptive to "Adora" and really let go, years of pent-up emotions coming out in one night of pleasure with someone who wasn't even the girl she loved.

DT, meanwhile, wasn't enjoying it as much as they'd hoped. Not because she was bad--far from it! But because she didn't want them at all--she wanted Adora. She'd talked about her nonstop to them: "Adora" this, "Adora" that! Why couldn't she see that ship had sailed and just let someone else in for a change? Why couldn't she see they were every bit as perfect for her as Adora could have been, maybe even better?

After a bit of silent pouting, DT shapeshifted back into themselves in the middle of it. They hoped, now that she'd gotten started, that she'd realize the gem she had in front of her and not the cheap rhinestone she'd lost.

Instead, she got angry, lashing out at them and demanding that they change back. Mood ruined, they both called it quits there before either could be satisfied. DT went back to Bright Moon that night as Flutterina. It took all their strength not to glare at Adora as they passed her in the hallway.

Though neither talked about their rough night and silently agreed to pretend it never happened, the damage had been sewn. DT didn't feel as close to Catra anymore--all the sexual tension between them had dried up once they faced the reality that she just didn't want them, plain and simple. She wanted Adora, and she'd never let that girl go. Not that they were one to talk. The only reason they hadn't betrayed Catra then and there was because a small part of them still hoped she'd reciprocate their feelings.

Catra, too absorbed in her work with the Horde and her own poor mental health, didn't pick up on the signs that DT was genuinely hurt by what had happened. Their playfulness felt scripted, and their smiles seldom reaching their eyes, but they were too good an actor to let anything obvious slip. She never apologized for it, and even asked if they wanted to try again--this time, no changing back. They had to be Adora the whole time. They declined.

After DT was caught, they waited for days, maybe even weeks for Catra to send someone to rescue them. They weren't sure if they were even worth it to her, but they held onto that hope. But no, it became increasingly clear that they were just another tool, and two could play at that game. Once Glimmer got her truth spell to work and made a deal with them, they accepted out of spite. They wanted to burn down everything Catra had worked for just to get back at her for breaking their heart.

Perhaps they really were like Catra.

But, a small part of them wanted to help her, too. Not with her goals, but with herself. It didn't take DT's honed skills in people-reading to see that Catra was struggling with her mental state and personal relationships. She couldn't just leave it all behind and confess her love to Adora, and she needed to. So, although they took great pleasure in betraying her and rubbing it in her face, they also made a point of giving her some advice. They weren't nice about their delivery--they try not to be. Kindness doesn't suit them, so they wrap it in cruelty to disguise the fact that they do have a heart.

They parted ways, hoping she'd finally open her eyes and wake the fuck up. They felt vindicated for a brief moment, but by the time guilt hit (Gah, that pesky emotion! They thought they had gotten rid of that!), it was too late to do anything about it. Prime had come and taken Catra aboard his ship. It was out of their hands, now. If they ever saw her again, though, they'd try to reconnect with her. After all, though they claimed otherwise, she really had been their friend.

the crimson wastes were far more fun than they had any right to be, really. catra couldn't help but think she fit in quite well here. this "party" thing was growing on her, she had to admit. she couldn't just sit out on all the action, could she?

she isn't all that used to dancing. honestly, she'd been lucky she hadn't fallen on her face at princess prom. her nose wrinkled at the memory, but she doesn't let herself dwell on it for long. to be completely honest? she has no idea what she's doing.

someone she hasn't seen before walks up a while after she'd given up on trying to self teach dancing and had just contented herself to all the new food. (these made gray ration bars taste like death warmed up, honestly.)

"So you're the one the wastes has been making a fuss about?"

her ear twitches as she turns toward them. "What's it to you?"

they call themselves double trouble. they're...pretty cool, actually. funny, flirtatious, have some damn good stories. they've been in the waste their whole life, they seem interested in her "little group" as they put it.

"Tell me, darling. Think I could get a dance?"

she snorts. rolls her eyes. "What, think you can get me with some flattery?"

"Was worth a shot." they chuckle. "You're more clever than you look."

"Still not working." she scoffs, taking a sip of her drink.

they just sigh dramatically. she can't help but snort.

and well, she decides to stick around. the crimson waste is her style, scorpia's...respecting what she wants, more. she's. happy. she's actually happy. not always, obviously. everyday is an uphill battle, but.

she's actually laughing again. scorpias...scorpias trying to be there for her, in the ways she needs. she's..god, she can finally breathe.

and double trouble is around. they're a good ally, and they seem to love the parties she hosts so often.

she blames it on the punch the three of them had been drinking all night. scorpia dared her to, that's her other defense.

"Trouble." she'd asked, putting down the drink. "You know how to dance, right?"
