“Hang on– Wait, okay, wait.”

They’re almost to the silver door before David all but drags Jack back a few feet, nearly making him bump into another person on the sidewalk. Jack turns on his heels to face David, who gently grabs his shoulders and positions him in the mouth of the alleyway between the two buildings- a bar and a dance hall. 

“Everything okay, Dave?” Jack asks, righting himself from the shoving. He’s used to being manhandled- his frat brothers believe in the love language of side-punches and dragging people arould by the collar of their shirt- but David is pretty gentle about it, and it catches Jack off guard more than it should. “Change your mind?”

“No, I just… I wanna make sure that you didn’t,” David starts, glancing over his shoulder at the sidewalk. “Change your mind, that is. I know this isn’t really your scene, and I don’t want to force you or anything.”

Jack grins, gaze softening. It’s sweet, really, that David cares like this. He’s right either way: Jack has never been to a gay bar before, let alone a drag show, but David’s birthday is next weekend and Jack can’t go to his party because he has to go to a date party with some Chi-O, so this is the next best thing. A night out together, doing something that David loves.

Jack isn’t sure he gets the appeal yet, though; he knows it’s entertaining, but why David loves men in makeup and skirts, he isn’t sure. But, hey, maybe he’ll be enlightened. 

“Dude, you really think I would’a walked all the way here to chicken out at the last minute?” Jack asks, raising a brow and crossing his arms. He sees David’s worry melt away- not completely, but enough- and the grin that takes place on his face makes Jack smile wider. “I’m a big boy, Davey. Ain’t gotta worry about me.”

David breathes out and nods. “Okay, good,” He says, and crosses his arms to mimic Jack. Jack watches him for a moment, the way his biceps flex a little as he moves and the way he cocks his hip, and he wonders for a moment how David isn’t cold just wearing a cut-up sleeveless croptop and a mesh undershirt. “In that case, we need to go over the rules.”

Jack tilts his head. “Rules. What rules?”

“First off, no judging,” David says quickly, nonchalantly holding one finger up. “Not that I think you would, but I’ve dealt with enough dickish straight guys at drag shows to not want to put up with it. Second– you’re here to see the show. I guarantee there will be plenty of straight girls looking for a gay best friend in there, and I know you’re not gay,” David pauses for a beat, “and I’m not trying to police who you flirt with or anything, but I just– I don’t, uh, want you missing out.”

“Wasn’t plannin’ on flirting with anyone anyway. We’re celebratin’ your birthday, man, tonight’s all about you,” Jack says as earnestly as he can. This isn’t how he’d want to spend his Saturday night, but it’s for David. He’d do a lot for David. “Besides, you’re actin’ like I’m not gonna be glued to your side all night. I’m out of my element here.”

“Fair point,” David acknowledges with a tilt of his head. The movement makes the glitter on his eyelids shine in the barely-there ray of neon light from the sign above, and Jack has to admit, David looks pretty good in makeup, for a dude. “Third– please try to have fun, okay? I get that drag is, like, weird, but it’s supposed to be. Frankly, I think it’s better when it’s weird. I don’t want you to be miserable just because you’re doing this for me.”

“I guarantee you, this is gonna be fun, okay? I know it’s gonna be a culture shock. It’s fine, Dave, really,” Jack assures him, then nudges his shoulder with his fist. “Let’s get inside before you freeze to death.”

David’s grin morphs into some sort of amused little smirk, a look that Jack hasn’t seen before, and he drops his arms to his sides. “Oh, that’s cute! You think gay people get cold. You’ve got a lot to learn.” 

As if he didn’t just drop an enigma of a sentence, David turns on his heels with surprising dexterity for someone in 4 inch platform boots, and walks out of the alleyway, beckoning for Jack to follow. 

And Jack does.

He follows underneath the neon pink lighting of the sign reading Mirage, and he follows in line, and he follows when the bouncer- a larger man in a black tee and leather vest- draws an X on the back of his hand, and waves them inside, and he follows as David leads him into an overwhelming mash of glitter and pop music and people who don’t look like Jack at all.

For the first thirty seconds, it’s a difficult adjustment. After that, after Jack sees the smile on David’s face? After he sees David throw his head back and laugh at Jack’s initial shock, after he sees David start to sway to the music and raise his hands as he leads Jack to the stage area? Jack decides being in this new atmosphere is the easiest thing in the world, if it means he gets to see David smile like this.

got a response to my last post and fuck if i didn't pull my computer out at one in the morning so i could do this particular topic justice

my "time to talk about family dynamics in tmnt" button was pushed real hard, and i don't get enough opportunities to talk about this

So let's talk about Leo's position in the family in the Bayverse movies. That's right folks, we're pulling out capital letters for the leader in blue, because this is a topic I am super serious about. Full college paper levels of serious. Gonna need to know how you want your sources cited.

This is a fascinating take tbh, and I would love to hear more about how you came to this conclusion. Allow me to show you why my position is different.

First:

I think this image says a lot. Leo's a daddy's boy long before anything like parentification could possibly come into play. Also it's really cute, look at him loving his dad!!

Second, let's talk parentification. Boiled down to its basics, parentification is when a child, usually the eldest, acts like a secondary or replacement parent. This is the part that really gets me, because I just don't see any evidence of it in the movies at all.

We do get to see some scenes from when they are kids, and no where is it suggested that Leo is anything other than another one of the boys.

Sure, Mikey hides behind him when play-fighting with Raph after the buck-buck scene, but that's just younger sibling behavior. No where is it implied that this happens because anyone expects it of Leo. That, I think, might be the closest to "parentification" that occurs in the movies.

The thing is, I don't think Leo has been the leader very long at the beginning of the 2014 movie. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it's a move Splinter made just before or even as the movie starts. Leo's and Raph's argument really solidifies that for me:

Raph: And who put you in charge?

Leo: You know who did.

This smacks, on Leo's part, of someone borrowing another's authority to shore up their own. That tells me that Leo at least does not feel that he has this authority on his own merit, that he's new to leadership. Raph senses this like a shark in bloody water, and he pushes because there's vulnerability there. (more on this later *rubs hands together in glee*)

I think that there is evidence in the 2016 movie that Leo is relatively new to a position of authority as well. His struggle to maintain the delicate balance of his brother's personalities and the fact that he allows his own personality to get in the way of being a good leader are prime examples.

These are pitfalls that a parentified person would already have experienced and would be able to avoid, and so they wouldn't have happened if Leo was parentified.

Third, let's talk about Leo and Raph.

So, my position here is that Leo and Raph DO have a normal sibling relationship, at least as normal as it can get when you are turtle mutants living in the sewers with only each other for company.

Anecdotal, I know, but I have a bit of experience with a similar dynamic to the one you assigned to them. I am the oldest of three, and my sister (middle) and I did NOT get along as kids. It got to the point where I thought as teens that once I left the house we would never talk to each other ever again.

Perceived favoritism was definitely an issue in my and my sister's relationship. Is it an issue with Leo and Raph? I honestly don't think we get enough time with Splinter in the movies to determine that concretely. It's definitely possible, but I believe something different is, either concurrently with or instead of favoritism, at play here.

I know it's easy to forget because they look Like That, but the turtles are teenagers. They are immature and don't always know how to express themselves. And Raph in particular struggles because he feels so strongly. It can be hard to control it when your emotions are strong like that, don't ask me how I know.

However, he gives himself away at the end of the 2014 movie. "Every time... I pushed you beyond your limits, it was because I believe in you! I believe in each one of you!"

Remember when I said that Raph sensed Leo's vulnerability and pushed on it? We've come back baby! I am firmly in the camp of 'both Raph and Leo are good leaders in their own way', and I think this is part of what makes Raph a good leader.

Sometimes Raph is actually annoyed at Leo for whatever reason, being told what to do the most common I think. But!! Remember, Raph also believes in his brothers, Leo included. So he puts Leo on the spot in a mostly controlled environment to help him learn how to be a leader. There's a lot more I could say here, but that's a Raph post, and this is about Leo.

So is it favoritism, Raph's need for independence, or Raph pushing Leo that causes tension in their relationship? I think it's a bit of all of that and more.

There is a fourth section to this post, about Splinter, but it is now almost four in the morning, I have to get up in like two hours, and I already fell asleep once while writing this. But know that in this iteration at least, Splinter is a decent single father of four boys, he did not parentify Leo, and any favoritism is unintentional.

Anyway, in my house we spend a lot of time talking about how much Leo loves his dad.

I kinda feel bad for Poseidon in this. I mean it was a bit satisfying but leaning a lot towards cruelty. While I thought Odysseus repeating the "ruthlessness is mercy" was cool, it didn't really fit for me? Bcs like, ruthless ≠ cruel. This leaned a lot into cruel. He didn't have to torture Poseidon. Not to say he didn't have something coming though, he kept pushing. I was also a bit irked by Odysseus trying the forgive and forget route because it sounded so mocking. Especially when you think about how 10 yrs is nothing to an immortal. Odysseus would have done the same if some jerk had blinded Telamachus, too. It feels weird to put it into a "villain finally gets punished" view and think the literal torture is fair punishment/deserved.

in the way that IBYFS can be broken down, there's this sense in the demos that Jason is everything Matt wants to be but ISN'T

and they way they're played off one another in b;apo (particularly Portrait Of A Girl in contrast to Touch My Soul, also Reputation Stain'd to a degree) leans more into this concept that Jason is everything Matt is, only better

and somewhere in the mess of characterization decisions made in B:TM, they manage to show me this dynamic, where Jason is everything Matt hates, instead (in the sense of they really diminish the way their rivalry is this all-encompassing thing and Matt's vindictiveness in Promise really does come down to all the bad shit that Jason actually does re; mess around with people's feelings, this layer of insincerity in everything that he projects outwards, his overall selfishness, etc. etc.)
