Broadcast Husbands
Chapter Twelve: In The Morning
(Told from Alastor’s POV)
As we retired for the night, Vox looked more stressed than before.
“What is is, mon cher?”
“Nothing.”
“Don’t lie do me, beloved. Is it Overlord business or Kingly?”
“Why would it be kingly?”
“Just thought I would include it. You did seem chummy after all.”
“The king can barely be around people. Why would a people person be chummy?”
“Information.” Vox looks at me in disdain.
“Really?”
“It’s what I would do.”
“That’s your own sadistic idea of conversation.”
“Indeed.” I magic both of our pajamas onto ourselves before lying in the bed. I motion for Vox to join me, and he complies. I plug him in to charge as he tells me goodnight.
"Good night, mon cher.”
Around 3 a.m, I got out of bed and changed into half of my normal outfit. Just the harness, shirt and pants. I teleport out of my room and begin to prepare to cook for the guests. Lucifer gave Vox his phone number yesterday to contact in the case of an emergency, and I asked him to ask Lucifer what time he would be arriving. All he said was around breakfast so that he could enjoy it with Charlie. Guess I better make an extra table setting.”
I get up at three in the morning to tend to breakfast. As I cook,I begin to play music, a jazzical piece, after all. Nina Simone singin’ in the background, her vocals soothing and powerful. Each note is felt and heard with joy and wonder as she sang.
“Al?” I jump, startled by the sudden interruption.
“Charlie, my dear. What are you doing up this early?”
“I could ask you the same thing.”
“I am preparing breakfast. What are you doing?”
“Lesson plans.”
“What does lesson plans have to do with the kitchen, my dear?”
“I just came down to get coffee. Lord knows I need it.”
“Quite the opposite. I believe you need rest.”
“No thanks. I’d rather be prepared.”
“To teach?”
“Yep.” She pours herself two cups of coffee before leaving me in the kitchen once again. “Maybe shopping will be a good idea.”
I head out to town, getting groceries for the next week, when I encounter an old friend.
“Carmilla! How lovely to see you! How are you this fine morning?”
“Alastor. Good morning to you as well. I trust that you are doing well, considering your territory is under attack.”
“Ah, yes. Vox told me to leave that to him, considering I killed the others when I arrived.”
“I’m well aware. What brings you here?”
“Groceries for the hotel! Can’t have our residents starving, now can we?”
“You’re partaking in the Princess’ redemption project?”
“Indeed. We both are quite interested in it and invested. She seems to believe, which is all we require.”
“Interesting. I shall take my leave. See you at the meeting tomorrow, I assume?”
“The both of us will be there. Farewell, Carmilla.”
“Goodbye, Alastor.”
We parted ways, with me returning to the hotel, to find Husker awake and at the bar.”
“Hey, boss.”
“Good morning, Husker. Care to join me?”
“Do I have a choice?”
“Yes. Choose now.”
“Why not. what are we makin’?”
“Breakfast. I trust that you're good with a knife?”
“I had a family before I died, fucker. Of course I can wield a chef knife.”
“Excellent. Tend to the fruit then, won’t you?"
Husker nodded his head and began to core, peel and slice the fruit as I worked on the meat, chopping into nice segments before grinding it to make sausage patties, adding salt, pepper, and garlic powder to season, before cooking them over an open flame. As we worked, there was a subtle rhythm between the two of us that made cooking much more interesting. The flow was unmatched to when Vox and I cook.
“Thank you for your help, Husk. I greatly appreciate it.”
“You called me by my name.” Husk look confused and disturbed by that.
“I did. Does that disturb you?”
“I’ve never heard you call me that. It makes my name sound foreign.”
“Would you prefer I call you Husker?”
“Yeah. It sounds weird bein’ called by my name by you. Don’t even.”
“Very well, Husker. But my statement stands. Thank you for your assistance.”
“Welcome.”
“Can I offer you a drink?”
“Always. Whiskey for the both of us?”
“Correct.” I grab a bottle of Whiskey from the alcohol cabinet and two glasses. I hand Husker his drink and we both down them instantly.
“Hey Boss?”
“What is it?”
“Lucifer. He seemed awful different than last time, huh.”
“Indeed. And it seemed like he didn’t remember us.”
“Don’tcha think it’s wierd that he forgot us?”
“I suppose. But the man has been alone for a very long time. It’s understandable he would forget us. But when comes tomorrow, he might recognize Niffty.”
“No one forgets that woman. She’s crazy.”
“Very true. Even we couldn’t if our memories were erased.”
Husker laughs heartily before downing another shot.
“I’m gonna head back to bed. You should probably do the same, unless you want Vox to be super cranky.”
“Very well, very well. Good night to you, Husker.”
“ ‘Night, Al.”

Dinner in America
I absolutely love Kyle Gallner, so when I found out about this movie, I just had to watch it. I thought it was such a sweet story about this girl who never seemed to fit in even with her own family, finding a guy that appreciates her for who she is. You always saw him sticking up for her even when it meant he might get injured which is something that not a lot of people can find.
Obviously, I am uber obsessed with Kyle Gallner. I mean the first movie I ever saw him in was Jennifers Body and he is just so cute in that movie. Every time I see another movie he's in I just have to watch it, and honestly this movie might be one of my favorites of his. When you first meet his character, you think that he's probably the worst guy you could ever meet, but they do a great job at showing that your looks don't aways correlate with your personality.
Patty is a great character to me because she doesn't change herself for anyone, not even Simon. He doesn't want her to change, and she doesn't want to change, so she doesn't, and I really like that about the movie. It sends a good message about staying true to yourself and not settling for less.

Hi! Hope you are well! I am not really familiar with comics as a show fan and I know you are, could you "rec" some issues/runs of The Flash as a starting point? I really love Barry & Iris and would love to read their comics dynamic. Have a nice day!
Thank you, I hope you have a nice day too!
I have read a few comics but not all of them, so there are more people who know a lot more than me, but I will give it a whirl.
I think as a general starting point for Flash comics in general, I'd probably recommend The Flash: 80 Years of the Fastest Man Alive. It's one of several books DC released as an anniversary thing (I also have Green Arrow: 80 Years of the Emerald Archer), and it has in it a selection of comics, so it has Jay's first appearance, it has Showcase #4 which is Barry's first appearance, it has Wally's (as Kid Flash), it sort of has Bart except it's the back of his head (my one note is Bart is quite neglected in this book), as well as a handful of others picked from the Flash runs of the three of them (my icon is actually from this book), and commentary by various writers so it gives you an overview and lets you read a little bit then decide which you'd like to read.
Carmine Infantio wrote the original Flash run with Barry, DC also released a 4 book Silver Age omnibus (I like books), that gives you the starting point of Barry's story. This is being written in the 50s and 60s, there are going to be things that are dated as with reading anything from a while ago, I suspect in 50 years people will be saying the same thing about what we're writing now, but I do have such a soft spot for the Silver Age. If you're specifically looking for Barry and Iris they are introduced here as already together before Barry gets his powers, and I quite like that they never go the love triangle with the secret identity route here, Iris knows the Flash through work kind of, but she's not really interested, she's got Barry. Also she can fly a plane.
I haven't read enough of Cary Bates' Flash run to know yet, only a few bits here and there, but this is getting into Iris and Barry are married, this is probably worth looking up, I do keep meaning to
Crisis on Infinite Earths doesn't have Iris in it, but it is an important story for Barry, and I quite like it. I am still upset about how many pages there are between Barry dying and anyone outright saying they're going looking for him.
Geoff Johns' Flash: Rebirth is also probably not a bad place to start for Barry, this is a comic set after Barry's been brought back to life, his history has changed, there are all these people who he doesn't really know, it's him trying to find his feet into being alive again. And also Eobard Thawne is here to Cause Problems On Purpose. I don't like all of Geoff Johns' comics, but this one is good.
Flashpoint is again apparently a majorly important comic in Flash mythos. I might try reading it again, I last read it a few years ago, but honestly I'm not a huge fan of Flashpoint.
Skip New 52 if you're looking for Barry and Iris. There are a few parts of New 52 that I like, but Barry and Iris aren't dating in New 52 (Barry dates Patty Spivot) and it's New 52, you can skip it. Though if you've watched the show, maybe Out of Time (Robert Venditti ect, it's Volume 6 in the TPs, which is #30-35, Annual #3, and The Flash Futures End #1), that's the arc with the Future Flash.
I love Joshua Williamson's Flash run, I am sure I have said so many times, I would definitely recommend that one, and again, this is post a soft reboot DC did after New 52 kind of flopped, so it's probably not a bad place to start either.
Jeremy Adams' Flash run was Wally based so had some fun moments but probably not what you're looking for, and Si Spurrier I have the first TP next to me to read once I've finished reading Blackest Night, I'll have to get back to you on that one.
As one-off comics rather than getting into the whole thing, there's United They Fall (Gail Simone), it's an Elseworlds but because it's just one comic rather than continuing on from something started in 1956 it might be good to try if you haven't read comics before just to see if you like reading them? I also enjoyed New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke, that's not exclusively Barry and Iris but they do feature, and again it's set in its own timeline rather than main continuity so it can be read as a stand-alone comic (also it features a very cute kid Hal Jordan and has made me feel very strongly that Hal Jordan should have been allowed to join NASA)
I think in general comics have been going for a really long time and there are a lot of them so at first glance they can seem daunting to get into, but also, there's so many of them it would be frankly unreasonable for people to expect you to read every single one ever. I think the best way to start is probably to pick a writer, any of them, and start at the beginning of their run. They will build on things that have happened before (even Barry's original Flash run brings up things that happened in Jay's Golden Age comics), they will have characters show up who maybe you don't know but they'll treat them like this is a character everyone's already familiar with, and there's the bits that editorial wanted this to happen for that event or didn't want that to happen for reasons so they had to work with that, but overall I think each author is going to have a story that they want to tell and those individual stories are going to be much more contained within their own comic runs, so you can just go find a story you like, you don't need to read every single story ever.
I hope this is helpful and you find a comic you like!

On the list of things I didn’t expect to happen today: Utterly SOBBING over the movie “Dinner in America”.
It’s basically the movie version of the show “End of the F*cking World”.
But, it’s quite obvious to me that the female lead, Patty, is a conventionally unattractive autistic 20 year old. And Simon, the male lead, is a rather average looking drug-addict/dealer, punk rocker, 20 something-year-old running from the cops, who also has a glaringly obvious Anti-Social Personality Disorder.
But the scene where they go together to an arcade and “My Kind of Woman” by Mac DeMarco plays as they unapologetically be themselves and have fun, made something deep inside me hurt very badly.
I see myself in Patty. The innocence I feel I have long lost inside me under layers of masking. She’s who I’m too scared to be because of the looks and judgment I know I would receive.
I’m not autistic, but CPTSD has stark similarities with autism and I relate to nearly every aspect wholeheartedly. TikTok is always trying to diagnose me as autistic because of this- lol turns out it's just trauma again!
nonetheless, this scene just rips at the part of me that years to be accepted. Me. At my very core. Not for my looks or my body, but because of who I am, how I act, what I like, my morals, my values.
I just want someone to be able to look at every part of me, even the parts I hate the most, and tell me that they love me anyway. Not despite my flaws, but because of them.
I hope I’m worthy enough of that love. I would do anything to be able to love someone like that and have it reciprocated.

Great Versions of Songs I Don't Normally Like
Don't Stop Believin' (Live 1981: Escape Tour) - Journey - Sacrilege straight out of the gate: I am not a Journey fan. That said, their musicianship is really solid, and everything about this performance is excellent. It's everything you want from a crowd-pleaser and honestly just a lot of fun.
Because The Night - Garbage & Screaming Females - I usually find this song overwrought, but this is a great cover. Marissa Paternoster is monstrously talented, and her closing guitar solo is 2 minutes of sustained, intelligent playing that is entirely in the service of the song.
Changing of the Guards - Patti Smith - Patti Smith dispenses with the gospel choir and horns, goes for an arrangement that sounds not unlike the dusty, shuffling beat of a Calexico song, and focuses on storytelling. it's, like, a million times better than Bob Dylan's original version. Sorry, Bob.
Ain't Got No, I Got Life - Nina Simone - This is hands-down one of the most radical cover versions I've ever heard. Nina Simone completely transforms two songs from Hair into a civil rights anthem. Even if you hate the rest of my takes, go listen to this.
Amazing Grace - The Holmes Brothers - An absolutely wild version of a gospel classic which merges lovely harmonies with gospel shouts, blues guitar, and James Brown-esque phrasing. For 8 minutes straight.
Make Me Smile - Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel - The chorus of "oooh la la la" on the original recording of this is like nails on a chalkboard to me. But this ramshackle version live at the Royal Albert Hall is glorious. Everything from the orchestra looking like they're wondering what they're doing there, to the pristine guitar solo halfway through and the obligatory crowd singalong, to Steve Harley getting tech to come onstage to help him take a video does, in fact, make me smile.
The Star-Spangled Banner - Whitney Houston - I'm not that fussed about national anthems. I'm not American. But Whitney Houston's 1991 version is jaw-dropping. It's musically innovative and technically brilliant. The only other version which is as culturally significant, in a very different way, is Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. But no other versions match the emotional heft of Houston vaulting into the stratosphere when she hits that high E on 'land of the free'.

The Alpha's Boy - Chapter 2 - Part 1
Book Two In : The Alpha's Trilogy
*Warning Adult Content*
Alistair 'Star' Claymore-Phoenix
My friends laughed as they ran into the deepest part of the woods before we could stop at the lake that was named after my... well actually I didn't know what to call Marshall Maverick.
It was a complicated, tangled family web.
Marshall Maverick was my Dad, Silas Claymore's, Dad Rodrick Claymore's mate and my uncle's father.
He was killed by my kidnapper Charles Maverick, who was also his brother, who also helped my brother, Lucca Meithke kill our pack.
'Still following along?'
My uncle Simon Claymore left just before Charles Maverick had come to the pack for, well no real reason, than to intimidate my Dads about old jewels that didn't even hold much meaning anymore and get Simon and myself.
Which obviously didn't happen or maybe it did, with Simon missing it was hard to tell where he was.
After being spotted on cameras for a couple of months after he left he had gone MIA with his assumed partner but every year around Christmas Dad always receives a postcard from a random city around the world.
It was normally blank with just a S on the bottom with a date, which I guess was a good sign.
**********
I was high but I didn't want Ivan to know because if he knew he would get mad and when Ivan was mad, it well... it would get bad?
It wasn't the worst thing in the world but he was my best friend and fighting with him hurt a lot, I didn't like the idea of him being mad at me.
'Then why do you keep fucking up, Star?' I sighed to myself but watched as Liam stripped off his pants and shirt before jumping into the lake.
Ivan stood by, a beer in his hand, as we watched our friend complain about the freezing water.
Nearby was Patrick, Patty as we called him, he was a bit older than us but he didn't seem to mind being around us.
He had his life figured out to a point, he was twenty-one, with a mate, a house and a job but on weekends he liked to come with us and hang out, have a few beers before heading home to Cecilia.
Being part wolf and getting drunk or high was a challenge if you didn't know where to go but I was thankful that Rudy knew where to get all the good stuff.
The pills or powder that had a little extra in it to hit you off, if you took two or three pills at one time you would be on cloud nine.
It was fatal to humans, one pill would take a human out for days or worse.
Ever. drinking was a little easier, someone always had a little spiker on hand to get your wasted a little quicker.
Darren had strong stuff in the basement of our house too, the strong stuff, made for wolves by wolves.
He had a stash in the wrack room, nine bottles or it started as nine.
Currently, it was nine bottles but only four of them had real alcohol in it, the rest was grape water.
I knew I needed to slow down or they would catch on soon.
I wouldn't get away with it forever and though Silas and Darren weren't overly strict, with the twins growing up and in the house now things were a little bit more, difficult.
It started when they turned two and Maddox had pulled out a baggy from my backpack.
I had left it in the wet-room for a quick minute before running off to spend the night at Ivan's house but that didn't happen when the bag of pills ended up in my little brother's hands.
He didn't get any of them but the cat was out of the bag at that point.
I'm sure they always had known but had just left me alone about it but they couldn't leave me alone about it when there were toddlers involved.
Plus I was only a kid too, I guess you could say I still am but I was an adult in the eyes of the pack.
Now that I was nineteen I was a man, a man who needed to get out on his own and find his mate, find his way in the world.
'Find his uncle Simon. Oh, Simon.'
I didn't really know the man, I hadn't spent much time with him but he is at every corner, everywhere I look his face is there.
His photo is all over our house, his name is spoken daily, inside and outside the house.
People mumble about him, rumors spread, that he was in on it, that he had a hand in killing my grandfathers, which is stupid because he was a baby when his father died and a kid when his adopted father died.
They would say that he was drugging Silas this whole time, that Simon was making Silas weak and that he was a danger to the pack.
'A shifter.'
I can't imagine how Simon felt all his time here, he must have felt like such an outsider.
'Like you do?'

AHA the photo of Nina Simone my queue just plunked onto my timeline reminded me of the thing I was rambly/ranty feeling about.
I've been watching YouTube reactions again bc it's a Mood and I watched some Hozier ones and... like...
I am very sad about how many of the younger reactors who've even done that one at all don't get what it means?
Like, for all the internet talk of "Woke" they don't understand even "It's not the waking it's the rising" and that it's a protest song in those parts.
And I'm also sad at how they don't recognize the names the song pays tribute to, they don't know who Mavis, Billie, Pattie and Curtis are, or Seeger- some catch Lennon and James Brown but not a lot of them do. I don't even see lights go on when Dylan is mentioned.
I've never thought of myself as being hugely educated about activism or music and I honestly couldn't name a lot of songs by any of them! Even if I have them in my music collection, I forget titles and who sings what, but like... I know who they are, and I kind of assumed everyone would going forward for some reason. (I AM DUMB.)
I hope the nicer comments people leave educating the reactors gets them to listen to the older music.
(I am a little heartened that I did go look for Billie Holiday reactions and a decent number exist, though not many white reactors.)

In 1999, Nina Simone was invited to perform as part of Nick Cave’s curation of the Meltdown Festival. Meltdown is one of those things I looked at from over here and couldn’t figure out the money or the time or it was a syndrome of having, you know, two weeks’ vacation into which you have to cram everything you have ever wanted to do; I didn’t go to Patti Smith’s, I didn’t go see the New York Dolls’ reunion (and therefore missed my one chance to see Arthur Kane).
I never got to see Nina Simone but I also to be honest didn’t try hard enough. She didn’t mean as much to me 20 years ago as she does now, when her humor and her artistry and her talent and the centuries of pain and joy in her voice connect with me in ways I don’t quite understand yet. I think about this a lot, the artists I didn’t go see because they were incredibly expensive or everyone told me not to go because they were a shadow of their former selves and it would be better to not see that. Now I know that that is untrue and I will tell you to go see anyone whose work is meaningful to you, because if you have enough of a relationship with someone’s art to want to see them live you are going to get what you need from the encounter while at the same time understanding and acknowledging what it is not. I would rather be angry I saw Aretha Franklin and she spent the entire time introducing the 25 piece orchestra accompanying her than never to have heard her voice in real time. I am capable of both thought processes.
Caryn Rose, music journalist I admire and also a dear friend, offering up truth and wisdom as usual. (Emphasis mine.) You should subscribe to her newsletter here.

sil’s watchlist
~❊ welcome ❊~
Firstly, please note I am an 18+ account - please do not interact or follow me if you are a minor and/or if you don’t have an age in your bio. You will be blocked!
I felt like creating a list of all of my favourite shows and movies - just a way for me to keep track of things. If you’re looking for something new to watch, maybe you can find it here :)
Please remember to avoid anything that might be triggering for you - I am not including any content warnings. Your media consumption is your own responsibility.
I will add to this list as I watch more. I like nearly all genres (basically anything but horror - although I can be persuaded), so there is a wide variety in this list. Recommendations are always welcome!
Lists are in chronological order of release year.

Listen to 2020: Let the Door Hit You on the Way Out on Spotify.
Much love to you all. May this coming year be kinder and more just. May we make it so.
Toxic - Russell T. Davies called this as the anthem for the end of the world in the second episode of the Doctor Who reboot in 2005, and who am I to argue with genius?
It’s the End of the World as We Know It - I personally do not feel fine, but I didn’t feel like I could leave this one off.
Bye Bye Bye - I do indeed want to see 2020 out that door, bye bye bye, etc.
It Was a Shitshow - “Not to be crass, but this sucked ass” is how I feel about this year in a single sentence.
Be Calm - This is my go-to song for “I need to have a minor breakdown and process Emotions” moods.
Summer, Highland Falls - “They say that these are not the best of times, but they’re the only times I’ve ever known / And I believe there is a time for mediation in cathedrals of our own” is a line that has been in the metaphorical dark pit with me for a very long time, and this year was no different.
Hard Times Come Again No More - This whole song is just a huge 2020 “could we get a fucking break” mood.
Bridge Over Troubled Water - I spent much of 2020 weary, feeling small, and with tears in my eyes, so, you know, I just need to hear Art Garfunkel singing about that.
Better Not Look Down / B.B. King, I’m Still Standing / Elton John, and I’m Still Here / Patti LuPone are the “despite all evidence to the contrary, I’m going to be okay” trio of this playlist.
Someday We’ll Be Together / Diana Ross and the Supremes - I started listening to this song on repeat in March and its central premise is what I’m clinging to as the year rolls over.
We’ll Meet Again / Vera Lynn - Ditto for this song.
We’ll Meet Tomorrow / from Titanic: a New Musical - Okay so I don’t listen to this song a lot because it makes me absolutely bawl but it got me through some very intense grief and what was 2020 if not an exercise in very intense grief. Unlike “Someday We’ll Be Together” and “We’ll Meet Again”, this song (which in the musical is sung as they’re about to cast the lifeboats away) is about...what if we won’t? How can loves and lives that have finite endings last? “If tomorrow is not in store, let this embracing replace forever.” God, I’m tearing up just writing this. This Year / The Mountain Goats - Practically obligatory. We are gonna make through this year if it kills us. Motherfucker.
The Parting Glass / Hozier - This one has also gotten me through a lot of grief, specifically pandemic-related grief. Tipping my hat to Mr. Andrew Hozier-Byrne for this one, it’s a real gift.
Auld Lang Syne / Iona - I love this song, I sing it at the top of my lungs every NYE, I love that it’s the tradition where I am. This version uses the tune that I’m used to singing at Burns Night Supper, and it includes the verse that is a delightful ode to splitting the bill: “And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup / And surely I’ll be mine!”
