hey remember when i left those tags on that post?

i still don’t want to talk about what the work of fiction is but i legit just got reminded today that while it’s been like over 15 years that i did want to check this thing, the character that “caught my interest like 7 years ago” actually caught my interest 12 years ago. As in, there was a specific moment in time when i wanted to get into it because i learnt about the character in question.

i’ve been in hysterics for the past ten minutes because i’m realizing it’s been over a decade that once in a while i had humored starting this thing, and that while it definitely started out of another place, it’s been 12 years that steadily it was because this character was standing out to me enough that i wanted to get into it, but then forgot all about it, and now i’m out there actually getting into it after a *dream that came out of nowhere about this chara popping up while i haven’t thought of them in years* and i’m just. 

bestfriendo is making fun of me because “this is the most slowburn in all of history of fav characters” and i’m screaming into my hands, imagine considering getting into something for OVER A DECADE while constantly one character keeps standing out for you and eventually you just get a dream out of nowhere of this chara like a sudden “hey. I’ve been sending you messages about it for the past decade why the fuck are you leaving me on read” and now you’re not only forced to pay attention but also forced to realize YOU COULD HAVE STARTED ALL OF THAT OVER TEN YEARS AGO i’m feeling so unwell.

I don't know if this question will make sense or if it's too vague, but here goes: how do I get my OCs to feel more like blorbos? With my favorite characters from books/movies/etc, I go feral about them, I want to put them in jars and poke them with sticks and see what makes them tick. But with my original writing, I'll have ideas for stories but despite following all the traditional advice for fleshing out character motivation, flaws, etc, I keep finding myself horribly bored with my own characters. This might be too vague to answer because what makes a blorbo for one person won't necessarily be the same thing that makes another person go feral, but I was wondering if you happened to have any thoughts on what keeps my OCs feeling so un-blorbo-ish? Thanks!

"Blorbo-izing" an Original Character

Quick question to start with: have you ever cast your characters with real actors or models, or commissioned an artist to create character art of your character? I feel like it's a fairly common thing for writers to do these days, but I'm still always surprised by the number of writers who don't do this.

I have a post about casting here (Guide: Casting Your Characters) but here I'll just say that, for me, casting or getting character art made is an essential part of "blorbo-izing" my characters. I spend lots of time creating and fleshing out my characters before I ever cast them or have character art made, but they almost never feel completely real to me until I have a visual representation of the character that exists outside of my own head.

Outside of that, I thing it's a really good idea to do some character development exercises that go beyond the scope of your story. Some of my favorites include:

Character Interview - imagine that you’ve pulled your character out of a story into the room and now have the opportunity to interview them. What questions would you ask them? What do you want to know about them that you don’t already know? What do you think the reader would want to know? What might be pertinent to the story that you haven’t thought about yet?

TV Crew follow around - Imagine you’ve dropped an invisible TV crew into your story’s world to follow your character around through an average day (even if it's anachronistic). Follow them from the moment they wake up until the moment they go to bed that night. What are they like when they wake up? What is their morning routine? What do they eat for breakfast? How do they get ready? What do they do throughout the day? Who do they interact with? What else do they eat and drink? What do they do for fun or relaxation? How to they make money or meet their basic needs? What is their bedtime routine like?

Letters or Journal Entries - Look at your character's back story, off-screen events, etc. and find something for your character to write about in a journal entry or a letter to another character. What would they say about this event? How does it make them feel? What do they think about it?

Use Your Character in a Writing Prompt - Look at some writing prompts and do one using your character as the main character. You can keep it within your story's world or plop them into a whole different world. Whatever works for you and your story. This is about getting to know this character in a different context than the events of your story provides.

Create a Character Mood Board/Aesthetic - Mood boards go a long way in mentally fleshing out a character for me. Being able to have a visual representation of their style, their vibe, things that are important to them, etc. really turns them into real people in my mind.

Create a Playlist for Your Character - I think playlists can also be a really great way to mentally flesh out a character in your mind. Sometimes, just having a particular song or a playlist of songs that makes you think of them gives them some dimension they wouldn't otherwise have.

I talk a lot about how being abandoned, growing up in the mourn watch and then being sent away shaped Vanya, so for this one I thought I’d include a song about her first love Daphne. (I could go on about these two and almost had Daphne make an appearance in the fic i’m writing about vanya but alas. the fic is already very long.)

how she views herself:

I think this song lyrically just sort of sums up Vanya’s journey to seeing what Varric saw in her. The first half of the song is exactly how she’s always felt, but that last bit when she looks back is kind of an epiphany.

The original is also a good one, but I thought the vibes of this cover fit better. I think the team sees Rook ready to lay herself down for them, Vanya in particular has a way of reaching out her hand and being there whether they like it or not. She is their bridge to each other and to healing.

Their Closest Relationship:

I think besides Emmrich, Davrin and Lucanis are her closest friends but I couldn’t come up with a suitable song to encapsulate those friendships. So I went for Emmrich, there’s layers to all of Hozier’s music but this album took inspiration from Dante’s Inferno this one particularly references leaving hell and I think for these two find a lot of hope in each other despite the circumstances.

The violin in this is just how I imagine Vanya’s brain is moving through plans, back up plans, back ups to the back up plans and when everything goes to hell she just keep going. The rhythm behind it is the urgency, the panic, but she never quits.

Heartlines - Florence and the Machine (youtube | spotify)

When I’ve seen her play this live, she’s mentioned that a good chunk of it is about family and finding your way back to loved ones. I think if I could sum up Vanya’s journey from the War of Banners to the final battle, this would be it. She’s speaking to herself, to her family team. And it’s witchy. Vanya is v witchy lol.

Don't mind me listening to my dad's playlist and thinking about the blorbos, but I just got slapped in the face by one association so I need to yap about it.

Yesterday by the Beatles is actually such a Mike Wheeler song, it's not even funny.

The overall opposition between a good yesterday and a lackluster present, and the longing for what used to be, but isn't anymore ? Wanting to go back to an easy time, where things used to be simple and good, because now everything is fucked up and you don't know how to fix it ? That is such an Hopper's speech "turn back the clock"™ Mike vibe.

"I'm not half the man I used to be"

The contrast between early rebellious and outspoken leader Mike, and the muted and defeated S4 version. He used to be so bright but life broke him down.

"There's a shadow hanging over me"

With all of his secrets, and the issues he keeps brushing off, but that are still there hanging over him, because ignoring them doesn't make them go away.

"Why she had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say"

El's "goodbye Mike" in S1 still haunting him a year after the fact. Her running away when he almost catches her in S2, and going to risk her life right when he gets her back. Her dumping him in S3, then leaving Hawkins at the end. Then leaving him again in S4. The overall motif of Mike getting left behind by El, if you even get it ??? (it's even in their last scene in the field !)

Soon she won't need him anymore, and he's so scared of that meaning her leaving him forever with no explanations, because he wants her to stay, but she keeps leaving and he doesn't understand why !

"I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday"

The rain fight.

His fight with El about not saying "I love you".

The clear regret in both cases. The longing to fix it all and go back to a better time, to say the right thing instead of hurting them. It's him, it's so him !!!

He spends most of season 4 mulling over what he said/didn't say to El. So much of his behavior in S3 and S4 is informed by his outburst in the rain fight, and the longing that comes with almost losing Will over it. He puts his foot in his mouth, and instantly regrets it, but it doesn't change what he said wrong in the first place, no matter how much he longs for everything to go back to before.

"Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play"

D&D and games as his love language with Will. Loving Will used to be easy when it was just the party in his basement. But now that they're not kids anymore, they can't play games in his basement for the rest of their lives. That love is something they have to leave in yesterday, even if it hurts them.

Also, love as something to play, because his relationship with El is in part performance, playing at being grown-ups in a serious relationship in S3. But now it's much harder in S4 because El wants something real and not just playing around, and Mike doesn't know how to do that.

"Now I need a place to hide away"

Mike's basement going from a place to play games in, to a place where Mike rots and hides away while he's depressed over his relationships falling apart. Wanting to hide away from his changing feelings, from Will and the way he feels for him, from El and all of the ways he can't be honest without hurting her.

Do you even get me ???? I said, screaming into the void like a maniac. It just fits !

Now that introductions are out of the way, here's some more info on me and this account specifically! This a daily doodle account for Royal Margarine Cookie from Cookie Run Kingdom! I am very normal about him. That's pretty much all I post about here, though other cookie related things do pop in every once in awhile!

This account was meant to be daily, but I am still finishing up highschool, and it's been very stressfull, so sadly I don't have the time to actually make that work. The plan is still to post a doodle daily! But maybe I'll only be able to do that once I finish up with school, sadly.

omg i feel like our views on music are sooo similar 🧚🏼‍♀️ first, girl ofc i listened to the album playlists!! i added some of the songs i was unfamiliar with to my own playlists too!! i love sharing music, and listening to different songs and picturing my blorbos singing them/just thinking about them is basically my second full time job LMAO. i loved picturing the FMC singing obsessed; my delulu pop star brainrot of the day is the FMC and ellie doing a vevo live performance video together (like ones ari has done in the past) but it’s just the two of them in the colored room, facing each other w mics and ellie is doing the guitar while the FMC serves vocals and ellie and does the backing vocals while they stare at each other super horny and gay like….. ik the world would eat that up. some other songs i’ve been listening to and thinking abt collide are ‘start a war’ by jennie (so reader coded with her strong feelings about ellie and her & ellie being a lil fucked up, also there’s a line about smoking soooo yk the vibes) and also while i loved and respect that our FMC is besties with sabrina i need her to steal ‘busy woman’ from her and release it in this universe bcs it also reminds me of early relationship ellie/reader with the insane horny levels and i think ellie would get a kick out of watching her gf tell everyone her ‘openings are super tight’ on stage every night LMFAO. she’d tweet something unhinged like “and i would know!!”

I actually actively am a fan of this guy he is one of my (many) Just Dance blorbos. He’s so! Special to me! ALSO, this one is definitely more like a smattering of headcanons than like... a consistent lore thing for him.

So! This is DJ Rock-A-Fella AKA Rocky! He's a dorky highschooler that DJs in his free time. Also, he goes to Woodcrown High School in Dancity. Originally, though, he's from Cyberfunk :)

If anyone's throwing a house party, you just KNOW he's going to show up with all his equipment and be like "Hi, what's up, this music sucks, I'm plugging my stuff in."

He's like one of those guys that has to play a guitar at every party, except instead of playing "Wonderwall," he's making a mashup of "It's Raining Men" and "Holding Out For A Hero." No one expects it to be good, but he's amazing. It's his passion!

Currently, Rocky's dating D.A.N.C.E (who I call Julie). They've been together since middle school. They did one slow dance together on a whim at a school dance (it was kind of awkward) and Julie asked, "Hey, do you wanna, like, date?"

And he went, "Sure."

And they've been together ever since. She's a cheerleader! I imagine they go on little arcade dates and she absolutely DESTROYS him at like... Mortal Kombat.

I don't know! To me, he's just this little nerd with really good music taste.

Got tagged for the WIP ask mem by @cuubism and @tj-dragonblade and @seiya-starsniper! I was a little hesitant to participate because, uh, I'm bad at having WIPs? But three separate invitations was too much to resist. <3

How many wips do you have currently?

Three! Olympics, DBD/Sandman crossover, and the University AU.

Which one are you finding the hardest to finish? Why do you think that is?

I'll be honest I am a One At A Time Girlie and so I am only working on the Olympics AU right now. The other two are effectively abandoned until/unless I decide to officially revisit them, and if I do, it will be with intentions of finishing them--and they were both abandoned for some structural issues that make me reluctant to revist them. Alas, I'm very boring and don't bounce between projects.

What does it usually look like when inspiration strikes for you?

Lots of thinking! I really try not to start writing anything I won't finish, and so I will spend a long time (usually days, sometimes up to a week) chewing on the idea--scenes, dialogue, themes, world-building, etc. If the idea comes out the other side intact, it's at that point that I'll actually start writing.

Do you curate playlists for each fic or is your process different?

LMAO no. I write in silence. I do have a Cottagecore verse playlist that I eventually made, but other than that, I just have a disorganized collection of songs that vaguely remind me of my blorbos. I love listening to other peoples' playlists, though! RIP 8tracks, I used to live on there for fun fandom playlists.

Do you go balls to the wall and write as you go or are you more organized?

The most boring. I outline and then I write in perfect order, scene by scene, until completion. I am also not particularly fast, but on a really good hit of inspiration can usually churn out about 1k/day. So not particularly balls-to-the-wall in either sense. Still! I get the job done. :D
