Of Robots and Rocketships: Chapter 1

In which Hunk and Pidge meet each other and become friends before Voltron, before the Garrison, before Kerberos, back when everything was still normal

Hunk had forgotten his water bottle.

He’d packed his favorite one in preparation for the trip, the extra-large one that could keep the ice frozen all day. He’d filled it up this morning before breakfast, setting it on the counter in his hotel room while he dug around for his card key, then had rushed out the door when he saw the time.

Despite having been up before the sun, he had been running late.

Or, perhaps, it was more because of his lack of sleep.

Normally, he would have slept in later. But today was a day that he’d been anticipating for months now.

The southwest regional FIRST robotics competition.

Hunk’s team had been preparing for this for ages, since the theme and the task had been announced at the beginning of the season. A freshman in high school, this would be his first competition, and he was nearly buzzing with excitement.

The competition was in Phoenix, Arizona, and Hunk’s team had made the long 7-hour drive out from Southern California the day before, spending the night in a hotel a few blocks away from the local university that would be hosting the competition this year.

He’d been jittery all morning, humming during the ride over, bouncing up and down on his toes as he and the rest of his team loaded everything they needed into the massive college gymnasium where the matches would be held, tapping his fingers incessantly against his leg. The first rounds were just starting when Hunk really started to get antsy. He stood off to the side of his team’s encampment, glancing between their rig (still functioning properly, thank god), and his teammates (just standing around? Didn’t they realize that their division was starting in only an hour?!), and the other teams (there were so many of them, he wasn’t sure how they were supposed to compete against so many other teams), and—

Break. He needed a break. He needed to get away from the action, breathe a bit, drink some water—

Right.

Which is how he ended up in the nearly empty snack store in the student union building, across the quad from the school’s gymnasium, a water bottle in hand, staring at the contraption on a counter by the freezer section.

A milkshake machine.

He had seen these before, but never had the chance to actually use one. A cup of ice cream, taken from the freezer, then one of the three little machines on the table would mix the ice cream into a milkshake.

It was almost like magic.

Hunk steepled his fingers, gazing into the freezer window with a look of intense concentration.

It was stocked full in preparation for the huge amounts of traffic on the campus that day. Rows and rows of ice cream cups sat lined up, in all sorts of different flavors, from strawberry to cookie dough to—

“Dude,” a voice said from behind him. “You gonna pick one?��

Hunk whirled around, turning to face the figure who had spoken. It was a girl, nearly two heads shorter than him. She raised an eyebrow at him, standing with one hand on her hip, her caramel-brown hair pulled back into a messy ponytail on the side of her head.

“Oh, sorry!” he said, blushing as he stepped aside. “It’s just a very thought-provoking decision. Do I go for the classic cookies-and-cream? Or something a little different, like the mint chocolate chip? Or maybe just a simple chocolate—” At the sound of her light chuckle, he stopped himself, his blush only deepening. “Sorry, I’m rambling.”

The girl shook her head, smiling, as she stepped past him to open the freezer door. “Want my suggestion?” she said, reaching in to pull out one of the frosted cups. She closed the glass door, holding up the cup triumphantly. “Peanut butter fudge swirl,” she said confidently. “No question about it.”

Hunk nodded appreciatively. “A little rich,” he commented. “But I’ll take it.” He reopened the freezer, pulling out another cup identical to hers, then followed her to the milkshake machine.

As they waited for their shakes to mix, Hunk studied his newfound companion. She wore jeans and a bright orange t-shirt, their team name Galactica printed on it in blocky charcoal-colored letters above an image of a space invader sprite.

“You here for the robotics comp?” he asked.

“Yep,” she replied, popping the ‘p’. “You too?”

“Yeah. I’m Hunk, by the way,” he said, holding out a hand.

If she was thrown off by his nickname, she didn’t show it, merely reaching out to return the handshake. ��Katie.”

“Nice to meet you, Katie.”

When their shakes were ready, walked back across the quad together. Hunk was feeling considerably better than he had been a half hour ago, the anxious knot in his stomach starting to unravel.

He glanced again at his companion, walking beside him in relaxed silence.

“So where are you guys from?” he asked.

“Not too far, actually,” she replied. “Flagstaff.”

“Oh wow, you didn’t even have to leave the state.”

Katie laughed. “Yep.” She paused, taking a sip from her milkshake. “What about you?”

“Long Beach,” he told her. “California.”

“Oh, cool. That’s gotta be, what, six hours away?”

“Seven,” he corrected.

“Jeez. At least it’s not as far as it could have been.”

He let out a nervous laugh. “Yeah.”

When he started to head back towards where his team was set up, she walked with him. They passed by one of the ongoing matches, pausing to lean on the railings and watch as two bots raced across the floor, systematically stacking rows of foam blocks.

“Has your team gone yet?” Katie asked, still watching the match intently.

“Not yet,” he replied. “Still about an hour till our first round.”

She hummed. “You nervous?”

“A bit,” he confessed. “You?”

She shrugged. “Yeah, I guess. I’ve had butterflies in my stomach all morning.”

He winced sympathetically. “Me too.”

“Glad I’m not the only one,” she replied, exhaling deeply. She took another long sip from her milkshake, then turned to toss the empty cup towards a nearby trash can.

“So,” Hunk started, “not that I’m not enjoying the company, cuz I definitely am, but shouldn’t you be hanging out with your own team?”

“I’m avoiding them,” she replied simply. “See, they have this tradition of pranking the newest member during the first competition of the year. And this year, that’s me.” She leaned back against the railing, looking across the room full of people towards a group in orange t-shirts identical to her own. She smirked, then turned back to Hunk and winked. “But I’m always one step ahead.”

“That’s...I’ll be honest, that’s not entirely comforting. Um, what exactly do you mean by that?”

Katie snickered. “Chill out, dude, don’t worry about it. I have an inside source.”

“An inside source?”

“My older brother is the team mentor,” she explained, rolling her eyes. “And back when he was a student, they did it to him. He told me years ago, and I doubt their traditions have changed in the past nine years. Especially since my brother’s still around.”

“Ah. Well, good luck with that?”

She snorted. “Thanks.”

“But your brother’s the team mentor? That’s so cool.”

“Yeah, he’s a dork. But it’s great, since he has so much experience with the team already. And back when he was still a student, our dad was the team mentor. It’s kind of a family tradition at this point.”

“That’s so cool,” he said again.

They fell back into companionate silence, watching the match play out before them. It was a couple minutes later when they were interrupted by a yell.

“Hunk!”

Hunk turned in surprise, looking in the direction the voice had come from. There was a boy running over towards them, olive green shirt identical to Hunk’s, sandy hair sticking up in a disheveled mess.

“Michael?” Hunk asked, frowning. “What’s up?”

Michael stopped as he reached the pair, sparing a quick glance at Katie before focusing on Hunk. “We need your help,” he said. “Something’s wrong with the bot.”

Hunk’s eyes widened. “Oh no,” he breathed. He turned to face Katie, an apologetic look on his face. “I’m sorry, it’s been great talking with you, but I have to check this out.”

“Right,” she said. “Of course. Um. Mind if I tag along?” she smiled hesitantly.

Michael raised an eyebrow “Who…?”

“Sure,” Hunk said in a rush. “Yeah, that’d be great!” He looked back at Michael, nodding decisively. “Show us.”

Katie stood with her hands on her hips, her orange shirt in stark contrast with the green of Hunk’s teammates. He’d introduced them all to her in a rush, but she’d forgotten most of them already.

“It’s moving too slow,” a dark-haired girl—Rebecca?—explained as they watched the bot scutter around. “I don’t know what happened, it was working fine an hour ago.”

“Probably a programming error,” Michael muttered. “It’s always a programming error.”

“Hey,” Rebecca snapped. “You guys say that all the time, but it’s always something wrong in electronics instead.”

“Programming makes no sense! It’s so finicky!”

“That...doesn’t look like a programming error,” Katie commented, frowning.

“They never do,” Hunk replied darkly.

“Oh don’t you start too!” Rebecca grumbled, crossing her arms. “My coding isn’t the issue here.”

“Yeah, well it’s not a mechanical issue either,” Michael said with an eyeroll.

Across the circle, Yumi looked up from her laptop. “Guys,” she scolded lightly. She sighed, looking over towards Hunk. “Hunk, can you take a look at this? I don’t know what’s wrong.”

“Sure,” he replied. As Michael and Rebecca continued to bicker, he made his way over to where Yumi was sat cross-legged on the floor, taking the laptop from her.

After a second of deliberation, Katie followed him, sitting down so she could watch over his shoulder. She pursed her lips, watching as he typed away at the laptop. “Are you...only single-modulating the gendocam?”

“It’s a gendocam. Not a vlexagane, okay? Single-modulation is fine.”

She raised an eyebrow at him. “Yeah, no, give me the laptop.” She took it from his hands, pulling it into her lap and looking over the code.

“Hey!” he protested.

“I’m a programmer, Hunk. Believe me, I know a programming error when I see one. And this isn’t it.” She looked up from the laptop, glancing over at Michael and Rebecca. “Run a drive test.”

Michael looked at Hunk questioningly, to which Hunk merely shrugged. Michael sighed. “Okay, here goes.”

Rebecca and Yumi set the bot atop a stack of wooden blocks, suspending it in midair so they could watch the wheels turn. Katie positioned herself lying on the floor directly underneath the bot, calling out commands to Michael as he hit at the bot’s controller, directing it forwards and backwards and left and right and in circles.

“I think it’s a problem with one of the motors,” Katie stated. “Check the signal lights on the spark, what are they doing?”

“They’re both green,” Hunk reported.

“I’m telling you, it’s the programming,” Michael said again.

Katie frowned, thinking to herself. Come on, Pidge, what else could this be, you live and breath robots, what could be— She froze suddenly, eyes widening as she remembered a few years ago, her brother ranting to her, using her in place of a rubber duck, her at eight-years-old only half understanding his ramblings. “The polarities,” she said. “Check the polarities of the wires.”

Hunk frowned, picking up the rig and setting it on its side. He grabbed a screwdriver from the toolbox nearby and began to unscrew one of the panels. “Yeah,” he mumbled after a minute. “Looks like the polarities got reversed? One of the motors was driving opposite of the other.”

“Ha!” Rebecca shouted triumphantly, pointing an accusing finger at Michael. “Told you it wasn’t an issue with the coding!”

Michael put up his hands in surrender, rolling his eyes. “Whatever.” He glanced over at Katie, giving her a sidelong glance. “How’d you figure that out?”

“My brother taught me that,” she replied with a smile. “Our rig is actually using a pretty similar set-up.”

“Really?” Hunk asked, his eyes lighting up. “That’s so cool.”

She hummed. “It’s my dad’s design, really. He used to be the team mentor back when my brother was still a student. So we’re recycling an older design, but hey, it works.”

Hunk chuckled. “Yeah, I actually got the idea from a book I read,” he told her off-handedly.

“Oh?” she looked up, interested. “What book?”

“Ah, Going Beyond Terrestrial Engineering,” he replied. “It was written by a Garrison engineer, Doctor Samuel Holt, he’s an absolute genius, and his books are really interesting, I highly rec—” He stopped himself abruptly, looking at Katie’s face. She was flushed pink, her eyes had widened to the size of saucers, and she had one hand pressed to her mouth, only barely covering a massive grin. Hunk paused, blinking, before hesitantly asking, “Uh…have you…heard of him?”

She snorted, biting back laugher. “Hunk, I—” She broke off, stifling giggles, and ran her hands through her hair. “Hunk, that’s my dad.”

He froze, his eyes widening, the screwdriver he held clattering to the floor.

And Katie burst into peals of laughter, doubling over and clutching at her stomach. “Oh my god,” she gasped. “The look on your face—”

“Wait,” he mumbled. “Your—your dad?! Is Doctor Holt?!”

She snickered again, before saluting. “You’re looking at future cadet Katherine Holt, daughter of Commander Doctor Samuel Holt,” she proclaimed.

“I….” Hunk brought a hand to his head, staring down at the floor. “Wow. Wow.”

Katie grinned, standing up. “Come on,” she said, taking him by the wrist. “You have got to meet my brother.”

“Your brother,” Hunk repeated as he got pulled after her. “Wait, I thought you were avoiding them, cuz of the prank.”

“That’s okay, I’ll just use you as a human shield.”

“Reassuring, thanks.”

She dragged him across the gym, towards a group of people in bright orange shirts identical to her own.

Matt was standing with his back to her, frowning at something on his phone. When they got closer to him, she raised a hand to wave at him. “Matt!”

He turned, eyes widening in relief when he saw her. “There you are! Pidge, where have you been? And….” He paused, taking in the person accompanying her. “Who’s this? You make a friend?”

“Matt, this is Hunk,” she introduced. “He’s read one of dad’s books.”

“I—I’ve read all his work,” Hunk babbled. “Wow, I…I can’t believe this.”

Matt’s eyes had lit up at Katie’s proclamation, and he held out a hand to Hunk. “Really? That’s awesome, man!”

Hunk shook his hand in starstruck wonder. “Thanks. It’s, uh, nice to meet you.”

Matt laughed. “Sucks that Dad couldn’t make it,” he remarked. “He was planning on coming today, but something got in the way. He’d had loved to meet you,” Matt added.

Hunk wasn’t breathing quite right. “He…he’d have…oh.”

Katie giggled again. “Hope we didn’t break you.”

“I’m good,” he squeaked. “I’m good.”

Matt was grinning ear-to-ear. “So what’s your guys’s set up look like?” he asked.

“Well, I actually got a lot of the ideas from your dad’s book,” Hunk confessed. “See, when I read his descriptions of the Garrison’s advancements in rovers—”

The rest of the competition went by in a blur. Hunk and Katie both had to return to their teams once the matches started rolling. Division after division went by, watching from the sidelines, smiling and waving at each other across the room, saying hi and making faces at each other in passing, making last minute fixes to their bots—

It wasn’t until they were packing up for the day that they had a moment to talk again.

Hunk stopped by their team’s set-up as they were breaking down camp, loading their folding tables and camping chairs onto dollies and carting them out of the gym. “Hey,” he said as he’d came over to stand beside Katie. “We’re about to head back to the hotel,” he told her. “Just wanted to say goodbye first.”

She smiled at him. “Thanks. It was really cool meeting you.”

He flushed. “Yeah. You too.”

They paused a moment, watching as Matt and two of the other kids carried out a folding table.

“How’d the prank go?” Hunk finally asked.

She threw up her hands in exasperation. “Nothing! All day! I’ve been waiting for hours but they haven’t done a damn thing! I’m starting to think that don’t do that anymore? Or maybe they just didn’t plan one for me cuz they thought my brother would tell me? Maybe the prank is that there is no prank!” She ran her hands through her hair. “It’s driving me nuts.”

Hunk laughed.

She glanced at him sidelong, her expression melting into a smile. “I…don’t make friends easily,” Katie told him, rubbing the back of her neck. “So. Thank you.”

He was speechless, looking at her with wide eyes, and she could have sworn they were sparkling. “Of course,” he said.

Katie bit her bottom lip. “Ya know what,” she mumbled, reaching into her pocket. She pulled out her phone, tapping at the screen to pull up her contacts. “Here,” she said, holding it out to Hunk. “Keep in touch?”

A grin broke across his face. “Yeah, of course!” He pulled out his own phone and they swapped, inputting their own contact info.

“Alright,” he said, handing her phone back to her. “Here. I—“ He paused suddenly, staring at something behind her. “Uh, Katie….”

“What?” She turned, glancing across the room towards what was left of her team’s encampment.

The first thing she noticed was the mini egg carton, held by one of her teammates. Next, the bright pink egg that she held, and the matching orange one held by the person standing beside her.

Katie yelped, grabbing Hunk’s arm and pulling him down with her as she dropped to the floor. “Duck!”

They ducked, and the brightly-colored eggs went sailing over her head, flying smack into the face of the person who’d been standing on the other side of her, just as he stepped back through the gym door.

“Ack!” Matt sputtered as the eggs cracked, spending bursts of confetti everywhere. “What the—Zoe!!”

The girl by the door was flushed bright red, quickly hiding the egg carton behind her back. “It was Alec!”

“What?!” Alec exclaimed, glaring at their companion. “No, we were aiming for Katie—”

Katie laughed. “In your face, Matt! You guys thought you could prank me, but you underestimated my abilities! Woo!!” She jumped, throwing her arms up and cheering.

Matt narrowed his eyes at her. “Oh you are paying for that, little sister,” he threatened. “This is war.”

She shrieked as he ran towards her, scooping her up and tossing her over his shoulder. “No! Matt!! Put me down!!!”

“Never!”

Katie kicked her legs, pounding her fists on her brother’s back. “Hunk, I need back up!”

Hunk blinked, watching the proceedings with an increasingly large smile. “Well,” he called out to the siblings. “Um, I should probably get going now. But thanks for everything! And, uh. Good luck?”

“Traitor!”

“Bye, Hunk!” Matt called cheerfully. “Keep in touch, alright?”

“I will!”

As he walked across the gym floor back towards his own team, he thought of the phone tucked away in his pocket, of the contact information for the inexplicable girl he’d met today, transforming the day into something even better than he’d anticipated, the child of the man who’d been his hero for years.

Yes, he decided, smiling wide. He’d be keeping in touch.

On Thursday, June 7, 2018, the good people of the Jewish Whisky Company once again hosted the “Mother of all Whisky Events”, the NYC Whisky Jewbilee. This would be the seventh time that this event would descend upon Midtown Manhattan, and while the main event began at 7PM and ended at 10PM, as we’ve done in years past, we opted to make this an all day thing, hence the #WhiskyJewbileeDay hashtag.

For this year’s #WhiskyJewbileeDay recap, rather than just talk about all that went down at the main event, we’ve decided to expand our coverage and tell you about all that happened in the hours and minutes leading up to the grand tasting at Studio 450.

Grab your Glencairns and your favorite elixir, Kids! It’s gonna be a boozy ride…

8:30 AM

G-LO: The #WhiskyJewbileeDay pre-train checklist:

Camera? Check

Light jacket? Check

Change of clothes? Check

Toiletries? Check

Daily meds, ibuprofen, and Alka-Seltzer? Check, check, and check.

iPad? Check

Chargers? Check

Extra batteries? Check

Cash? Check

Kids dropped off at school? Check

Looks like I’m ready to go. NYC, here we come!

Limpd: Two bags? Really? Did Mrs. G-LO finally kick him out? I can’t say I didn’t see this coming. I wonder who had today in the “When’s G-LO’s Wife Gonna Kick His Sorry Fat Ass to the Curb?” pool?

AK: Can’t blame G-LO for the two bags thing. I’m an overpacker too. Cuz you just never know.

9:14 AM

G-LO: On the road to Hamilton Station. Why did Limpd pick the 295 entrance off of 561 when there was a perfecty good entrance 3/4 of a mile back near the PATCO station? His way is probably a shorter distance, but my way has less traffic.

Limpd: I find it curious that G-LO requested the Sirius XM Broadway Channel for the drive up to Hamilton. Maybe his musical theater loving wife and eldest Urchin are finally rubbing off on him and he’s finally acquired some taste in music? Somehow I doubt it.

AK: I had him pegged for Yacht Rock. Who knew? Though I think I saw him once sporting a Gerry Rafferty t-shirt while sipping on a Pina Colada.

10:34 AM

G-LO: Amazing how few parking spots there are at this hour. Circling the parking lot made us miss the 9:58. But that’s ok because the nice thing about this being a heavily trafficed route is that there’s always another train. Catching the next one allowed time to pick up a Boston Cream donut. You know, for strength!

12:31 PM

G-LO: That was a fascinating ride to NYC. We actually went backwards at one point due to a disabled train. Oddly enough, it was the 9:58(!), so I guess things have a way of working out after all, though sadly, we had to skip the stop in Metuchen. Now we’re all checked in at the hotel and headed to The Ginger Man for lunch and a drink or two.

Our room has a lovely view of some office workers.

AK: Is that guy on the 4th floor making Xerox’s of his butt? That’s so ’90’s.

G-LO: Lunch at The Ginger Man with Whisky Raj, The Coopered Tot, Malt Imposter Stephen, and Limpd. Had a Founders Green Zebra, a Watermelon Sour. Super delicious with just the right amount of pucker.

This place is great at lunch time. Solid food. Fantastic beer selection. And you can actually have a conversation, hence why it’s THE pre-Jewbilee gathering place.

Limpd: They had Old Engine Oil on draught! I knew there was a reason why I love this bar. Such a good beer.

G-LO: The One Nation Under Whisky Podcast Recording and Master Class Session has begun. So many familiar faces…

Limpd: “To lose a swimmer would be bad. To lose the whisky would be unacceptable.” I didn’t say that! The guy that wrote the Men’s Journal article about The Great Islay Swim did. I’m not THAT heartless. Though it really would have sucked to lose the whisky.

Joshua says, “Double pours? Really? If you say so, but when someone gets trashed and falls down the steps…”

“I put my hands upon my hips… And when I dip you dip we dip…”

G-LO: Started things off with the SCN Pillage Cask (bottles are $500/each with all proceeds going to the Royal National Lifeboat Institute) which has a little bit of whisky from each Islay Distillery. Thick. Oily. Briny. Peaty. Everything you’d expect from a vatted Islay whisky. Good fun! I added a little too much water so I pillaged some whisky (see what I did there?) from an open seat next to me to bring back the fire. That was a damn good move!

Limpd: Tasting the Islay Pillage Cask which was matured in a quarter cask (30 gallons yielding 145 bottles). Apparently, this blend is heavy on the Kilchoman. It’s very leggy and looks like rich honey. The nose is very medicinal with iodine, mercurochrome, and a good bit of peat & pepper. The taste is hot and spicy. Quite the tongue numbing experience. Adding water made it a bit muted, and while less flavorful, it was more approachable.

Someone asked, “How were the contributions from the various distillers selected and how were the whiskies blended?”. Joshua of SCN’s response, “Part by design and part by necessity. We put thought into the whisky whenever we could, to the extent that we were allowed.”

G-LO: Our second whisky for this tasting was a Single Cask Nation bottling of a 4 Year Old Kilchoman. Licorice. Powdered sugar. Charcoal. Vanilla. Young. Fiery. Richly flavored. Really nice to visit this again (click here for my first impressions of this dram).

Limpd: Round two was a chance to try one of the distilleries that went into the Pillage Cask on its own. The color on this SCN Kilchoman bottling was a bit golden, with a nose that was all peat and burnt rubber (think a smoky rubber glove). The taste was brief sweetness followed by a cinnamon heat and a very pleasant finish. Once you get past that smoky rubber glove encased kick to the head that came courtesy of the nose, this is a very nice dram.

G-LO: More Kilchoman for round three of this tasting! This time around we tried the Kilchoman 100% Islay from Binny’s of Chicago. From field to bottle, this is 100% Kilchoman, i.e. they grow the barley, they malt the barley, and they ferment and distill the barley on-site. No outsourcing on this one! Lots of vanilla. Burnt sugar sweetness. Not a lot of bite (more of a nibble). Like quickly running your finger through a flickering flame. Long lasting, spicy/sweet finish. 100% Islay was 100% delicious!

Limpd: Do you know how I know that G-LO is a bad, bad man? Because I was actually looking forward to trying dram number three, a farm to glass bottling of Kilchoman. I used to hate the peat until G-LO kept pushing the stuff on me like a corner boy from The Wire pushing WMD on the mean streets of West Baltimore. “It’ll make ya feel good” he’d say. Anyway…

Dram number three looked a lot like dram number two. The nose was sweet with a plethora of heather. The taste was a bit muted for a Kilchoman. Almost soft, but oh so nice. The heat comes in at the backend on this one with a spicy, long & very pleasant finish.

Random things overheard while sampling this whisky…

Justin: Losing the juice would be unacceptable. I said JUICE!

Chad: Captain Angus is the saltiest man alive!

David: How do they know that Captain Angus is the saltiest man alive? Under what scenario did they need to lick the captain?

G-LO: Port Askaig 9 YO? Is that what they said? Anyway, this is whisky number four. Much darker than the other three. Very winey on the nose with loads of dark fruit and dark sugars. Super hot and spicy at the start. All that dark fruit and sugar plus cinnamon, chilis, and a bit of bitterness. Long fiery finish. Tartness in the aftertaste. Damn good, but perhaps a bit too dry in the aftertaste, i.e. this isn’t something that I would drink often.

Limpd: A Port Askaig for whisky number four. The color is good bit darker than anything we’ve tasted so far. The nose is leathery, oily, and honeyey. Tastes like it noses. A little oily with nice sweetness, then a bit more leather, wood and tobacco. Very interesting as a component to a blend, but maybe not fully finished.

G-LO: Simon Brooking, Global Brand Ambassador for Laphroaig and All-Around Super Guy, brought a Bowmore Dorus Mor Batch III and the Laphroaig Cairdeas 2018 for us to taste.

The Bowmore was very very sweet with spiced honey, oodles of fruit, licorice, and vanilla. As Speers would say, “This tastes round…”. Nicely balanced and unusually sweet for an Islay. Honey barbecue and mesquite perhaps? Yummy yummy in my tummy for sure!

Cairdeas 2018 was very light on the nose or maybe I wore out my olfactory with this peaty tasting. The flavor is lightly sweet with vanilla, powdered sugar, peach jam, anise, cracked pepper, and some orange zest. Cairdeas is always yummy. This is no exception. A fine way to end this delightful class!

Limpd: Whisky number five and number six are surprises from Mr. Brooking of Laphroaig.

Number five is the Bowmore 10 Dorus Mor Batch III (aka Tempest Batch 5). The color is light yellow with a nose that brings iodine, vanilla, and honeysuckle. The taste is a bit woody with a nice sweetness (bananas?). Really, really good. David, who was seated next to me, remarked that some of the earlier Tempests were better. If that’s the case, I’d would have liked the opportunity to try them.

Whisky number six is the Laphroaig Cairdeas 2018 which is first fill bourbon casks and then Fino Sherry casks. The color is clover honey with a very muted nose that brings some menthol & vapors. The taste is sweet, oily, and peppery, almost in that order, along with some nuts and sea salt. After that, there’s a good bit of heat which leads to a rather long finish.

Jason says, “I was going for creepy. Did I nail it?”

G-LO: Uh-oh! Jason and Joshua are throwing “Ok ok! You lads can leave now as we have to set up for the main event!” dagger eyes at us. I guess the Masterclass/One Nation Under Whisky Podcast session is over! Definitely good fun with oodles of booze, yucks, and tales of Islay Swimming by the guys that swam those frigid waters last summer. Not a bad mid afternoon pre-game before the Big Game!

Limpd: G-LO spoke very highly of last year’s Masterclass session, so I’m super pleased that I was able to make it to this year’s session. For the record, the guys that did The Great Islay Swim are clearly out of their minds. There isn’t enough whisky in the world to convince me to do something like that. Then again… And, then, then again… all of the titanium in me might begin to dissolve in the sea water, so, I might be best that I remain content with staying on dry land with the whisky that I already have.

G-LO: Time for more pre-gaming. This time at American Whiskey on 30th Street. Limpd, David and I ordered fried sweetbreads with spiced honey, fries, and deviled eggs to share. I had a Bells Oberon to wash it all down. The Lads didn’t care for the sweetbreads. More for me I guess! Did we need this stop? Probably not. But we had time to kill and I really like this place. So we’re here and enjoying every minute of it.

Limpd: Sweetbreads? Who the hell orders sweetbreads as a pre-game snack prior to a whisky event? Some things just aren’t supposed to be eaten. Sure, YOU can call if offal. I’ll just call it awful. Just so you know, offal is defined as “the waste or by-product of a process: such as trimmings (such as the belly, head, and shoulders) of a hide, the by-products of milling (as of wheat or barley) used especially for stock feeds, the viscera and trimmings of a butchered animal removed in preparing it for market or for consumption, and/or rubbish” by the good people at Merriam-Webster. Need I say more?

AK: I’ve been semi-off the grid for 24 hours but the ghost has returned, and now venturing south along the calm Hudson River down the winding West Side Highway from… Riverdale, NY. This is not a long lost chapter from The Lord of the Rings. Just life. The middle offspring has Orientation at Manhattan College up yonder near Yonkers. But she let me get away to join the Home Office Fellowship of the Drams (and Damned too!) at Jewbilee where there will be no Dwarves, Orcs, or Hobbits, if you believe the ancient scrolls. The Uber driver is giving me a nice tour and telling me about how NYC loves President Trump and don’t say otherwise to his wife or, “she kill you”.

G-LO: Waiting for The West Coast Office (aka The WCO aka AK) outside the event. There’s quite a line forming. He better show up soon. We’re thirsty for more!

AK: Stepped out of my carriage at the event to meet up with G-LO and Limpd, but alas, no G-LO or Limpd. Where the hell are they?! Is this the right place? The right night? The right chapter in the sequel? Luckily I meet The Malt Imposters in the lobby, then moments later, Susannah Skiver-Barton (aka SSB) arrives and she is giddy as ever. Familiar faces! Good times have started. Minus G-LO and Limpd.

AK: The slowest elevator in New York City arrives at our destination: 12th floor. Ladies undergarments, housewares, umbrellas… whoops, wrong cartoon. Whisky Jewbilee! And who do we see first? Guess. C’mon, guess. Bigger than a breadbox. No, not a thing but you’re warmer? Oh, heck. I’ll just tell you. G-LO, Limpd, and some guy I don’t know! You could’ve guessed if you tried a little harder. Slacker!

G-LO: As is usually the case when the NYC Whisky Jewbilee rolls around, the stars aligned and all of the pieces that make this event so special fit together perfectly.

We’ve discussed past Jewbilee events ad nauseum, so rather than bore you with a bunch of words (many of which we make up), we’ll just show you what we saw throughout what would prove to be yet another great whisky event…

I am going to demonstrate one type of coaching model so that you can get a sense of what coaching might look like. Some things to remember is that it’s, my job to be the facilitator, not the keeper of the knowledge.

My player today or coach e is father and I have no idea what she’s going to say, so I am going to ask which one’s coaching around and I’m going to coach her. We are going to stop at different points in the recording, so I can point to to what I’m doing.

Why don’t, we go ahead and get started yeah all right. Thank you, yeah! Thank you. What would you like coaching around today? Well business-related, you know my husband and I just took over a new car wash uh-huh, and so it’s, a new industry for us new kind of everything.

So maybe we can touch on something concerning that? Okay, so you want to talk about the car wash. You just started it mm-hmm and its new its new, so we actually bought an existing car wash uh-huh. It’s, nine years old uh-huh and we just took over in November.

Congratulations yeah! We seem excited yeah, it’s been good, but you know it’s. It’s, a complete new industry, customer service interaction haha. So it’s, a pretty broad topic. Let’s, narrow it down. Okay, if we were to form a question around this business.

What are you curious about how to drive you know? How do we get more foot track and foot traffic to our car wash okay, we do have a competitor. Okay, how do we, how do we get their business okay? So how do we drive more business from the competitor to our business, yeah that song right yeah? That would be okay, and what would you like to get from this conversation? Maybe some tools I can take with me to kind of you know when we’re dealing with customers or employees or when my husband and I are like troubleshooting the operations side of it all being able to.

You see it with like a more mature look or fresh eyes or something okay. What I heard was you want some tools to be able to look at your business that you can use with your husband that will give you some perspective or fresh eyes.

Is that right, yeah, something different? That’s, not just like what I’m, bringing or what he’s, bringing but okay all right. So you’re, looking for a way to have something that’s. Gonna support you in perspective around this business, specifically around driving business from the competitor to your business.

Is that right? Okay, all right good, and how will you know we got that in this conversation? Hmm, I don’t know how I & # 39. Ll know that we got it, but I’m interested in having things like unlocked in me and in new revelations about business about how to handle things.

I’m interested in yeah. I can tell you fill it up, so when you have a revelation, how do you know you’re, having a revelation? They’re, just like bears witness it’s like just yeah in my soul like so you feel it.

Yes, okay, where do you feel it my mind, my body? You know you know what that feeling feels like mm-hm okay, so we’re going for that yeah. Let’s! Go for that! Okay, all right great! What a lot of coaches will do.

Is they’ll, fail to take the time to really understand what is on the table to be discussed and what the client or player really wants from the conversation? So I’m asking myself. Am i clear about what this conversation is about and what she wants and the answer is yes, I think I am and she’s confirmed that so we’re gonna move on growth and development cannot occur without a gap.

So let’s, discuss the gap, so you have a way of looking at your business that provides perspective and fresh eyes. You can use this with your husband and it’s specific to how to drive traffic from your competitor to your business.

Yes, I’d, like for you to imagine that you’ve had that for well over a year. What does that make possible? Well, first scene, more so than we are right now like what Mike just statistics, you know how much we’ve grown every month.

Okay, we’re, seeing that we’re, seeing growth every month. More more car washes more members signing up so okay, we have some proof, but I guess in a you know, if we’ve had it for a year, it would would reveal to me if we’re actually doing things right or Not being able to trace it back to you know, are we spending our energies and efforts in the right area? Gotcha? Okay, so let’s go! Actually.

I want you to stand in the future. Okay and yeah. You can close your eyes if you want but stand there and tell me: what can you now see because you’ve had this for a year? What do you see that it’s? Easier, okay, good, so it’s.

Gotten easy mm-hmm that you know we’re marketing right and we’re customer service is like top-notch. Okay. I can see that okay and when you see customer service top-notch, what are you envisioning? On my end, I know I, like I want everyone to be greeted with this smile, a wave.

I want them to feel special, even it’s coming through the carwash like I wanted them to just feel like they they matter. For that short time, they’re out our business, so you can see that customers are having an experience of being seen and that you, even just for that short amount of time it’s, like your presence here, makes a difference, and Vice versa, am I getting that right? Yes, okay, keep staying that vision! Okay.

What else can you see? Look at your numbers. What can you see it’s a year from now? Customers are happy, they come just just because of the way they’re treated traffic has increased. What numbers do you see around this? I could see an increase.

They’re like 25,000. If we do, if we can do it. Okay, so you’re now seeing an increase of over 25,000 a month a month, okay, sure yeah, because so you’ve. Seen an increase of you’re now annualized! You you’re on track to do over 300,000 correct okay.

What else do you see I see like as far as the look goes, the carwash being totally revamped and improved with the machinery and chemicals and equipment? Mm-Hmm – and I see our brand, which is we’re – called the local wash because we we care about community care about that.

Community. Yes – and I see us engaging in that community to to help to be there a business that’s, not just about them, but that can be outward yes and prove that you know and see that, like we’re at the beginning Phases now, but if I’m looking in a year and we stick with it, I see stay there and stay in that future.

I’m gonna keep you there. Okay, so you’re at well. Over 300 thousand. You’ve, become a business that makes a difference in the community and a place where your community wants to come, and people have this experience of really being seen, and even if they’re only there for a moment, they’re making a difference and you’re.

Making a difference for them is that right, yeah, okay, anything else that you see, I see it’s not having to be there every day all day, okay! Well, so what do you see? I see us, maybe taking you know, hiring the right people to run it daily uh-huh, where we can.

You know really step into what we kind of initially bought the car wash yeah, which is to kind of have that passive income – and you know, and all that kind of financial security. Yes, but I can see us – maybe there, okay, Tina, all right so stay in that future and don’t crawl back here into the President’s Day.

In that future, this has happened. Okay, okay, I’m gonna talk to the future. You, okay, okay, mm-hmm, yeah mm-hmm, and what I heard is the it’s. You know you what lights you up is the connection to the community and who you guys are for the community, and you know.

I really hear also that your life is enriched because of the difference that you’ve made, and you’re able to take just as much time for yourself and your family as well as the business. Is that right, mm-hmm? Okay, all right, wonderful, and why is all of this important to you? I personally, I value feeling accomplished and not I’m, making a difference in people and impacting them even on a small scale like it just connecting that’s.

Really. What I love to do so I thrive off that really with this you know so many customers come through and we’re dealing with so many people every day and it’s. It’s, always fun. For me. That part of it yeah the annoying ones.

You know haha, yeah, okay, okay, so stay there and from that place, what is it you can and if you need to close your eyes close your eyes? But what is it that you watch when you were watching the business? What did you watch carefully that allowed you to arrive in this place? Our product? Okay, say more about that like if it’s? Is it a good car wash okay, good chemicals? Okay, do they work? Okay, they water down; okay, all right, so quality a product.

You kept your eye on that and what did you actually watch to keep an eye on that using different chemicals? Sometimes, the ratios are different because some are more potent than the other. So watching kind of that reaction on the cars and if it dries quicker and all that kind of stuff, okay and then are there less accidents? Okay, how sometimes with the rearview mirrors or uh-huh, you know? Okay, so you really watched quality and quality control and how the cars flow through and the chemicals and everything to do with that.

Yes, and from a big perspective as the owners. Even if you’re, not there, how do you know that’s working, I would say cuz we deal with so many customers, their feedback. Okay, alright, so you have built in a feedback mechanism with your customers around this.

What did you put in place that’s? Good? We put in place the openness with our customers to feel like they can say, hey. You know my car was extra money. This time in my will world it didn’t, get it all yeah like they could openly say hey.

You know we wish that the car would wash would have done a better job this time right. So how did you do that consistently? At the beginning, it was like asking people every person like how’s, your car wash.

Are you happy with this? We’re new owners or making changes mm-hmm. You know we want to make sure that our customers are happy. Okay, that’s, important okay. So in the beginning, you did a lot of being there and asking so people knew they could give you that feedback now that it’s a year later and people are going through.

How do you know that they’re still happy and you’re? Getting that feedback, I would say, buy their complaints or their. You know they’re, not complaining or by knowing that our product and our method is good, and so there’s, no cracks in that yeah.

That mean it’s, squishy yeah, so yeah so stay there. In that future, you’ve. Already done this all right, you’re at over 300,000. You can now walk away from the business and know that the quality of that wash is as good as it can be, and you have a way of knowing when it’s not, and you’re, not there.

What did you put in place so it may be feedback, but what did you put in place that gives you instant feedback or gives you feedback on a regular basis? Manager tell me about that. The right person for that rule, when we’re, not there all the time, okay, okay, yeah, you could be a manager absolutely, and so you train them to ask yes yeah any other ideas, then that are coming here right now.

I’m. Sorry, no! You’re fine kind of good. I’m. Like okay, I’m. I’m a year down the road yeah. How did we do? How do you know you’re, getting regular feedback from customers around quality and the value they they’re receiving? I don’t, know yeah.

Okay, we & # 39. Ve got a manager what about of the manager sick? How do you know employees yeah, I’ll, go do the job there, okay, so staying in that future. Tell me: how did you get the manager and the employees to look at it that way and bring the same level of diligence and care to quality trained them on what we have already implemented? What we know works, okay, we believe in okay, like it’s.

Yes, so you created a platform and a training so that everyone is doing this. I think you’re onto something now, okay, so, in addition to managing quality, what else is driving people from the competition to your business? What we offer like we offer air fresheners that are really cute with you know, state of Texas.

You know with our logo, we offer poker chips that are good for a free top wash Monday through Thursday, so people love those people are even asking for poker chips or like it, doesn’t work. That way, you know, like we give those out at different times in our towel program.

People love that okay, so did I understand you correctly that you are doing some things? The other competitor is not, and then the game you’re playing with the poker chips. Has them want to come? Yeah, Oh fun, so you & # 39.

Ve already got that in place. Oh yeah, okay, okay, all right, but a year down the road yeah. What wouldn’t it be? Even you know we’re, hoping that these things just catch on, and people people like these things, okay and they’re.

Just a part of what the local wash can offer, okay and as business owner. What are you watching that? Has you know this is working our numbers? Don’t lie so when we keep track of our poker chips, we see that people like we’re, giving them out.

People are using them uh-huh, okay, so you’re watching who’s actually coming back, so we’re, counting returning customers as a way to measure this. Yes, training planned for the employees that in that ensures quality, and now we’re, going to track repeat customers through the chips, good idea, let’s, find one more way to watch this.

What else do you need to watch as the business center, or what else are you watching in this future? That gives you site, and that particular thing you’re watching, is an indicator that the competitor is losing out to you, and people are coming to your carwash.

Instead of theirs, we’re watching for opportunities to plug ourselves into communities. Our families or schools or churches uh-huh that it’s like we’re. We’re one. In the same, so we can as a business, come together with the school help.

If there’s a need and her little things, I mean we’re at carwash, so we can’t navigate too far right, but because we’re in a community that is about community, we’re able to okay plug in so what I just heard was you’re watching what’s happening in the community and you’re, making plans to stay connected with the community and that’s, something That you, you’re, doing consistently mm-hmm all right, and if I were sitting down with you a year from now with you and your husband, what would I see you looking at that that helped you manage your events in the community? What would I see like? What do you mean where I’m? Finding those opportunities or how are you managing that you’re involved in the community on a regular basis? I would yeah, I would say the feedback with our not enough feedback there I would say.

Are we June enough events? Are we putting on enough fundraisers? Are we doing enough donations? You know, or you know, for the for the baseball team or the football team cheerleading. So I’m hearing a couple of things.

I’m hearing that you’re, watching your contributions, which sounds like a number that you’ve decided on, and you’re watching number of events that sound right yeah. So you’re watching number of events.

You’re, watching your contribution dollars and you are you’ve, got a training platform for your manager and your employees to manage quality, and you’re, counting, repeat and keeping track of that statistic.

Correct okay stay there in that future, I am what we were doing just now is discovering possibilities. She’s, standing in a vision, and what can she see from that place? This is how a coach shifts someone from from looking at a situation as if it’s, a problem to looking at a situation from the point of view that it’s already resolved and that that’s.

Why? This is called a vision model. I also was dancing in between stage 2 and stage 3, because we were already designing actions and coming up with the plan and now what I want to do is kind of start to wrap this conversation up and it’s called recap and removing Barriers, so let’s, figure out where we are so far.

What have you gotten from this conversation? Am i in the year am, I still know tough to just talk to me. I’m gonna. Take you back there in a minute, okay, what I’ve gotten right now is to look at that perspective.

Being that okay and be okay with that and not know mean because how can you know you know mm-hmm, but also to pay attention to those things that I might not be like? Okay, I feel like there are holes.

Yes, I’m. Talking to you like I, my heart wants to say more, but my mind is like wait. Wait, wait. You know I don’t know. Quite I’m, not sure. So I think filling those in you know I’m, getting that like our foundation right now, I still like.

Okay, this you just became aware of something your business needs. Is that right? Yes, okay, and what are you now aware of? I’m aware that it’s. It can’t miss BA. You know talking game, you can’t just be like.

Oh yeah, we’re engaged in the community, an event it needs to. Actually be like what we’re watching and like what we can see yes and what happens if you don’t have like your top three things. What do you think would happen if you don’t know what to watch.

I don’t. Think you’ll, be successful. Why? Because you’re. Not you! Don’t have all the right tools: mmm, okay, let’s. Go a little deeper! I’m. Taking you back to the vision, okay right: 300. Over 300,000, you have nailed your participation in the community.

You have your number for how you’re, contributing you know what events to attend. You have trained staff and a manager. You can walk away from the business and know that it’s. Working that standards of quality.

You’re, keeping track of repeat customers and playing the game of bringing them back, and you know what your numbers are. They’re, they’re getting better a month over month and as you watch all of that, and you keep your attention there.

What is it you’re, not paying attention to because it just doesn’t matter that much I don’t know I’m trying to think of that one stay in the future. Yeah. You got your eye on these three. These are you nailed? These is your top three things to watch, so what does that mean? You just aren’t going to pay attention to, hopefully nothing.

I mean we need to pay attention to the business as a whole, but if there has to be one thing, there has to be at least three or four things: oh, and that we’re, not gonna pay attention to yeah cuz. We just came up with a strategy, and every good strategy tells you what not to do yeah yeah, alright, so think about what you won’t, be doing since you’re, managing quality, trained staff watching repeat customers, involvement in the community That’s, your strategy, those are your legs of your chair.

That’s. What’s? Gonna hold up your business? What isn’t your strategy or, and what does that mean? You won’t, be doing because I don’t know it well. What would your other options be if that wasn’t your strategy, don’t confuse a little okay, that’s? Fine! I’m gonna.

Take it back to the vision. Well, over 300,000, you and your husband can step away. You know what to watch in your business, trained staff involvement in the community, you’re, contributing high high quality.

Repeat, just it keeps growing customers coming back, you & # 39. Ve got your formula. What do you know not to do now that you & # 39? Ve got your formula. You don’t have to do what easy simple. What comes online first, is I mean personally, I don’t have to be there every day, yep what else? So you’re.

Not there. You’re, not going to use a lot of business owners. Do that restaurant owners, for example, their strategy – is to be there all the time that’s, not your strategy, very good, yeah ten hours.

Being an art major had always been a dream of Y/N’s ever since she had been little and her parents had allowed her to use the wall in her bedroom to draw with her pastels. They’d always tear the wallpaper down at the end of the month , keeping her sketches in rolls at the attic and replace it with a new one. Later on she took extra art classes at her high school as a preparation for applying to art school. Things had turned out exactly like Y/N had imagined her life would be, well almost. Most of her friends were supernaturals and there was no way to elude the dangers that came with this … or the surprises. Specially when it came to Malachai Parker. He was Dangerous with a capital D around everyone but her. With her it was all surprises - pleasant and some times not so pleasant. He wasn’t all bad , there were sweet sides to him but mostly he drove her nuts.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT

Y/N couldn’t wait to get home and relax after the long day at her college. Art is fun but sometimes it was a bit much , specially with assignments deadlines. Her car pulled in the driveway and she quickly got out , opening the door to the back seat taking her messenger bag and the large sketchpad. Tomorrow was going to be even more exhausting and Y/N couldn’t wait to get inside , take a long hot bath and go to sleep. Only when she came inside there was a surprise waiting for her. “You are late. Got stuck in traffic ?” said Kai who had made himself comfortable on her couch , munching on a pack with pork rinds. “Don’t worry , I got your dinner covered. After all someone has to look after you and make sure you eat properly.” Kai turned towards her with an amused expression on his face. Y/N’s jeans were covered with paint on a few spots and her hands had traces of it too. Kai noticed there was some graphite on her nose and pencils in her hair. But what got to him was her shocked expression. It flashed from surprise to confusion to anger to shock to surprise in a matter of seconds. He couldn’t help but laugh. Y/N’s mouth hung open and a moment later she swung her messenger bag in the air ready to smack Kai with it , only he whooshed himself away and the bag barely grazed his shoulder. “Get out of my house !” “Owwh.. So cranky. Did someone have a bad day ?” he said mockingly , rubbing his shoulder. “Violence is never the answer Y/N.” he scolded her. Y/N let out a sigh of frustration , dropping her bag on the floor shortening the distance between her and Kai. It was always like this with him - Y/N was one of the very few people who’d tolerate his company in the first place and for some reason that got him attached to her. He popped up pretty much everywhere around her , every day. “Actually my day was perfect until I found you in my house …eating my pork rinds.” she said grabbing the pack from his hands , dipping her hand inside to get some with a grin on her face. Kai looked more upset about her stealing his pork rinds than about the fact she had tried to smack him less than 3 minutes ago. “Oh ? Did you want these ?” Kai laughed for a second then clenched his jaw , getting up to chase after her. Y/N was driving him nuts. One moment she could be smiling at him and acting as if he is her best friend , the next one she’d be getting on his nerves like no one has ever managed. In fairness , he had sneaked into her house without any kind of warning … again , but still. She should know better than try and stand between him and his pork rinds. “How did you even get in my house?” she wondered , eluding him yet again at the stairs. “If you broke a window - you are paying for the repairs.” “Ha.Ha. Funny. Your bedroom window was open … again. Why aren’t you locking it up ?!” said Kai , stopping and crossing his hands on his chest as he watched Y/N wink at him and take a turn around the couch towards the fire place. “And you invited me in , remember ? What kind of a friend would I be if I don’t come to check up on you from time to time? Now gimme back my pork rinds.” “These?” she said looking at him innocently , pointing with her other hand at the package. Kai nodded , shortening the distance between them in a few seconds. “Yes. Gimme.” he grabbed her wrist pulling her towards him as she tried to escape from him again. Their eyes met and for a moment they gazed at each other before a smile spread across Kai’s face as he finally got his pork rinds back. “Your attitude is going to get you in trouble sweetheart. How many times do I have to tell you this ?” Y/N felt a little out of breath , not because Kai had chased her around the living room the past few minutes but because of the way he looked at her a few moments ago. Something different had flashed in his eyes , something she hadn’t seen before. “Is it ? Is it really ? Cuz I seem to be the only one who can push your buttons without feeling the wrath of Malachai Parker afterwards.” said Y/N raising her hands , shaking them in the air with fear and then tapped his nose , smiling innocently at him before taking a step aside and walking towards the kitchen to see what her dinner was. Kai stared after her wondering how is it that she is the only one who gets away with calling him by his full name and getting on his nerves in every possible way. If it was someone else , they’d already be two metres under ground. Perhaps it had to do with the weird feeling he got every time he was around her. Specially the feeling he had gotten a few seconds ago. Something had sparked deep inside him. Kai left the pork rinds on the coffee table and chased after her in vampire speed catching up with her in the kitchen. Y/N had bent over to see what’s in the oven and he could hear the change in her heart beat realising it was her favourite pizza. Kai grabbed her wrist and spun her around in vamp speed until her back was pressed against the kitchen counter and his chest firmly pressed against hers. Y/N looked up into his eyes feeling butterflies flap their wings in her stomach having him this close to her. His eyes which were a little darker shade of blue in that moment , not looking away from hers. She felt her breath get stuck in her throat sensing the danger levels around him raising. Their friendship was based on pushing the boundaries of the other. Kai leaned in towards her , unsure what he wanted to do exactly. He wasn’t exactly angry at her , there was something else he just didn’t know what it was. “So … you are staying for dinner or ?” asked Y/N feeling her heart beating faster than ever. Even she could hear her own heart beat. A smile spread across Kai’s face , though Y/N could see devils dancing in his eyes. “When my girl asks me this nicely , how would I decline.” he took a step backwards from her , his eyes following her every move. Kai wasnt sure what was happening with him , why his attitude towards her was so soft. Had it been someone else , they would’ve been food a long time ago. “Not your girl.” she replied. “Stop calling me that.” “But I like calling you that.” said Kai with a smile , taking out the pizza from the oven. “It has a nice ring to it - my girl … Kai’s girl. See ?” He cut the pizza , taking out two plates from the kitchen cabinet. Y/N rolled her eyes at his comment , sitting opposite him on the table reaching for a piece of her favourite pineapple ham pizza. As annoying as Kai was , sometimes his surprises were nice. “I’m starving …” Kai slapped her hand away. “Careful sweetheart. It’s still hot. You will hurt yourself.” Y/N stared at him reaching for a slice again , his hand grabbing her wrist. They stared at each other for a few seconds and he let go allowing her to get a slice. Instead she got two and hungrily started eating them. Kai stared at her laughing. “What ? No ‘thank you’ for making sure you don’t starve to death ?” he teased reaching to grab a slice himself , only Y/N slapped his hand away. He tried again - same thing. “You think you are funny don’t you? Come on Y/N , don’t deny it. You like me more each day..” Y/N only raised her eyebrows at him roughly running her fingers through her hair. She liked and hated him at the same time. It was a weird feeling to live with and sometimes it was hard to understand , even harder to explain. “Thank you … for the pizza.” “See ? 6.45AM two days later Y/N woke up , quickly getting a shower before getting her coffee in a to-go cup. There wasn’t much she needed for her classes that day except her big sketch book , a set of pencils and graphite , the rest of it she could get at the art supply room on campus. That day they were supposed to have someone model for the class. Drawing a still life wasn’t an easy job - she had to get most of the details right before the day was over because there wasn’t a second chance. Everything was going perfectly fine the first few hours until the moment Y/N looked up from the page and saw Kai , semi naked standing at the podium posing for her. He was standing barely a metre away from their official model for the day - a young girl from one of her other classes. Y/N blinked a few times thinking that maybe she was hallucinating. No one else seemed to notice anything but her. “Careful with the shadows.” said the teacher pointing at the model on the stage. “See how the light falls ?” Y/N nodded , taking in the teacher’s notes and nervously glanced at the podium again seeing Kai wasn’t there anymore. So, got a few life updates.

First, on the good side, I started my full time job! Yay! Just finished my first week of training, mostly just company training, doing my specific job training for the next 2-3 weeks. Everyone seems pretty chill, I got the specific job I wanted within the department, and I think it’s gonna be a nice time (once my sleep schedule acclimates).

Second, on the neutral bad and good? It has started to snow/sleet/ice, and specifically started just before I left training, and as I was driving my windshield started to ice or frost or something, and I couldn’t get it to stop. I got home safe, but it was really nerve wracking. It’s also cold as shit in the room my comps in cuz the vents were only half open until tonight, and there are two windows, so just cold air is leaking into the room, and my parents have the fireplace on in the living room, so the heat won’t come on. It’s just a perfect storm of being cold back here.

And lastly, on a negative note

Got frustrated with my dad cuz instead of being supportive today, on the end of my first week of a full time job, also getting back in the snow, he decided to first tell me how to fix the frost, which was something I’d already tried, but he said it worked even though it didn’t, then he decided to treat me like a child who’s never been responsible for getting myself anywhere on time before.

Without saying to much, the place I’ve been training isn’t where my actual job will be. The place where I’m training, I needed to leave about 30 to 45 mins before I needed to be there, and 45mins gave me like, a really comfortable amount of time before I needed to be there and a super comfortable amount of time before training actually started, since we were told to be there 15 mins ahead to just get settled in the room. So I was super way good on time and could have probably left slightly later with no problems.

My actual job will be in a city around 37-45 minutes away, which admittedly, I will be in morning commute traffic, but I only need to leave probably and hour to an hour and 15min till. My dad told me that, since I have to go farther (which is true) for my job, I should add an extra 45 mins to an hour onto my leave time to get there...

That’s just ridiculous. There is no reason for me to leave and hour and a half to two hours before I start, that will put me super super early and I don’t want to just sit in my fucking car, or just sit at my desk. Most supervisors don’t want you to clock in more than 5 mins before, so I’d just go in and sit at my desk for a while until I can clock in. That time is just too much. And his tone was just like when he shamed me about getting a job and said I didn’t care about getting a full time job. He talked to me like a kid who’s never had to get himself anywhere on his own before, like I haven’t been driving myself places since my third year of high school, like I didn’t go to four years of college and get to class on time an overwhelming majority of the time, as a commuter student, like I haven’t had a part time job for the past 8 months that I got to on time all times but three, one because my alarm wasn’t set so I slept in (therefore had nothing to do with driving) and the other two having to do with the parking lot being slammed packed full of people, and in those two times I was 15 mins early.

But no, he has to talk down to me and tell me I shouldn’t be late and that I am wrong about when to aim to get there, because he’s older than me and I’m to stupid to know when to leave the house on time. I’m 24. I’m not a child. And I can’t even talk to him about the way he acts because that just comes back to him telling me I don’t care and he’s telling me what to do because I don’t care enough to try, and the fact I want to fight him or have a different opinion actually means I’m wrong and don’t care but he does so he’s right.

And just in case it were to come up. I know this sounds like I’m just a whinny kid complaining about a parent who actually just cares about me making a good impression, but that’s not exactly what’s happening. My dad does this kind of thing all the time, as I mentioned above about the shaming me over “not caring” about a full time job because I felt worthless and unhireable.

He’s been passive aggressive about almost every decision I’ve made since I started on Testosterone because he thought that was “irresponsible” and then continued to use that kind of shaming language for a bunch of my other decisions. He’s been super critical of almost everything I’ve done since then.

And if he’s trying to be supportive and help me success, he could do with actually being supportive rather than critical. It doesn’t make me feel successful or motivated when he criticizes me at every turn. If he wants me to succeed and do well, he could actually say something positive or supportive, rather than just nod occasionally.

But at the end of the day, he’s not a bad guy, he’s just a typical guy in that way, and it’s infuriating. I care about him, but that just makes it feel worse when he acts like that to me, because it doesn’t always feel like he cares about me back.

The fuckiest day in my life

So, since I haven’t posted anything cuz i'm high all the fucking time because I have other shit to do, I'm gonna tell y'all what must be the fuckiest day EVER in my whole life.

Despite my young age, I've experienced a lot of weird shit, but nothing can top this... yet. It was a nice Friday morning and somehow, my PE teacher wanted us to run from the school to the beach. IDFK why, but anyways, we just started runnin'. From my school to the beach, assuming you ain’t stupid and go thru the woods, it'll take ya 35-40 minutes. Now, I ain’t the sporty kinda guy, so I can't run long distances for shit, but I try. Halfway through the woods, I have to piss, so I leave the rest of the class to go take a piss. When my piss is done, I come to an horrendous conclusion: I'M LOST.

I don’t know where the rest of the class went, and I remembered the teacher had mentioned something about following the walking trail to get there, and some train tracks. Now, I didn’t pay any fucking attention so I just tried to auto-complete this shit, which resulted in “Follow the trail by the train tracks so it'll be easier” and not the ACTUAL thing, which was “Do NOT follow the train tracks NOR the trail, just go by it.” So, I follow the damn train tracks, walking along the railroad and singing songs, by myself, as if I were a Robinson Crusoe kinda fucker. I even picked up a cat and carried it in my arms for a couple kilometres. The cat was pretty snuggly and soft, that was cool. Naturally, I walk to go towards the main street, as I would know my path from there. Of fucking course, this wouldn’t be the fuckiest day ever if something else didn’t happen...

I end up near the fucken Dominion Grimm (Maple Sugaring Producers' store) and actually FARTHER from where I'm supposed to be. At that point, I'm fucked. I won’t get back to school in time and I'll get suspended again. Then, a shitbulb lights up above me. My aunt and uncle work at the motorcycle shop in front of it. I run in a busy fucking street, nearly get hit by trucks and incoming traffic and make my way into the store. Once inside, I ask if my aunt is busy, but, of fucking course, she wasn’t working that day, Realizing I've lost several minutes, I panic and call my mom.

She comes to pick me up at the D&G and drives me to the beach. So, here I am, covered in cat hair, sweat and some piss on my shoes, in my mom's car, getting a ride to the beach. Sounds sweet, doesn't it? Well, fuck Fiat. As soon as we get there, something on the car fucken breaks. My mom has to call CAA to get it towed because it’s making a weird noise and there's some rattling sounds too. I run to the shore as fast as I can, thanking my mom for the ride, only to be greeted by... nobody. No one was there yet. I just piss again and of course, as soon as I start pissin', my pal Pat comes and shouts that we gotta go back to the school. I hurry up and I run after him, telling myself that this time, I ain’t gonna be lost again.

And I inevitably get lost, again. This time, saying “Fuck this”, I use the GPS on my phone and follow the instructions. Now, the ETA was 11:30, but the class was dismissed at 11:25. And, to be extra fucky, I twist my fucking ankle. I fall on the ground and scrape my knee on a rock, and my knee is bleeding. Not that bad of a bleeding, but still, it’s really fucken retarded. I then try to painfully walk back, but my ankle is really fucking killing me, so at one point I have to stop. I'm now ina neighbourhood 5 minutes away from school and it's 11:16. Fits perfectly, right? Nope, I need to change and go to my other class. I honestly don’t know why I did this, but I did, so fuck off. I remember learning in survival class that you can stop a bleeding by making a bandage, but the part I skipped was IT NEEDS TO BE STERILE. WHICH IT AIN'T. I had the GREAT FUCKEN IDEA of ripping some BARK off of a tree, add a RIPPED PLASTIC BAG on it and securing it with a RATCHET STRAP. I had to STEAL a goddamned RACHET STRAP off of a truck so I could look less like a dumbass. And since I don’t want to be late, I do it while I'm running. I'm smart though, I did it in this order: Bag-Bark-Strap. I tighten the strap down until I can feel the pressure throughout my whole leg and I sprint like I never have before.

They say adrenaline makes you do crazy shit, and it's true. I ran so fast I had trouble breathing, my leg all bloodied up, a ratchet strap, a bag and some bark strapped to my leg and my face full of sweat. I arrive at school and, of FUCKING course, it's 11:22, It took me 3 minutes to do my retard first aid and 3 more minutes to get back to school. For my defence, had I not ran through people's lawns, I would’ve been really fucken late, but I wasn’t late, right? As I get into the school, no one from my class is there. I assume they’re all changing. I go in the changing room, they ain't there. “It'll give me some time to get rid of that retarded shit I made”, I think to myself. As soon as I think this, my classmates arrive. All they see is me, a fat kid, shoe in hand, bleeding profusely from a scraped knee, strapped with a ratchet strap, bark and a plastic bag, panting and sweating. I changed classes the week after, I chose arts instead.

So yeah, that's my FUCKIEST day ever.
