"Albie" (main story 11-21)

At the end of Episode 11 (Part 1), we find out that "Albie" is simply a name that Vyn made up on the spot when Rosa asked. He may have been inspired by his own birth name, Vilhelm Richard Albert de Haspran.

In Chinese, Vyn choose the name "阿明". "阿" is a prefix used to form nicknames, "明" can be a name but also means "bright, clear". In Vyn's Romantic Rail Getaway card "Food for Thought", he tells us the meaning of his name:

You can see the character 明 appear in the word 明亮 ("bright"), although 明 is such a common character that I wouldn't say that this Chinese text alone is enough is sufficient evidence to show the connection between the two names. It's the way that the "Albie" and "阿明" happen to coincide in the name "Albert", which made me take note of Vyn's "careless" choice in name.

If the Chinese name was intended to subtly reference "Albert", I can certainly imagine imagine this as one way to preserve that reference through translation, even if it becomes more obvious. We do have an example of the translation preserving plot-relevant wordplay in a name: Lowe Leare ("Lowly"), originally 萧仁 ("小人", both pronounced "xiao ren" but with different tones). However, there's also an incident of a plot-relevant name being missed through translation, though it was in an event (not the main story) that probably foreshadowed a distant plot point and had infamously bad translation issues.

Anyway, it remains possible that "Albie" is a coincidence. However, after Vyn and Rosa wrap up their conversation about Albie's name, the narration makes a comment on the importance of that moment:

It isn't until the whole case is settled that you are surprised to realize something... You had briefly touched on the key to cracking the case at this very moment.

...which at least gives me enough confidence to not feel silly writing up a whole post about it. We've only seen part of this case, and there's a lot of mystery still surrounding Vyn's behavior so I don't have any definitive hypotheses on why Vyn might have chosen his own name for Albie. Is there something that made Vyn seen himself in Albie? Did the delinquent's attitude remind Vyn of the cruel, stratified world that he was born in? Is he reminded of how people who have imperfections will be tossed aside and abandoned? I guess we'll see when part 2 of this episode is released.

vyn's svartish birth name, as many of us know, is vilhelm richard albert de haspran. and those first three names are great because they actually exist irl (as opposed to "de haspran" which is made up, referring to "of house haspran" most probably) and thus have established variant forms and diminutive names. Vilhelm is a form of William, which has diminutive names like Will. Richard has diminutive names like Rick. Albert has diminutive names like Al. all that said, it would not be etymologically wrong to adopt a nickname for vyn from each of his birth first names' diminutives.

which means, if somebody wanted to tease vyn, they could technically call him "willy dick bert richter"

(....and then they'd subsequently have to start running away very fast, because vyn will begin hunting them for sport)

Don't Shoot self-indulgent ending rambles (behind the scenes stuff that I didn't get to talk about)

Just some of my thoughts for things that happen at the end of the fic. Spoilers included of course!

Ending #1: Luke dies

Out of all the death endings, the aftermath for this one actually feels like... the happiest, in a way? It's still not happy because it's still an angsty ending, but it's probably the one where everyone gets the most closure.

The idea that Zella gets the locked box that she was curious about for so long, but leaves it unopened on her coffee table with the accompanying key...ouch.

Zella is usually the focus in everything that happens after your chosen boy dies, but you can also see bits and pieces of how the other NXX guys react and process the tragedy. I think this is least shown in Luke and Artem's endings, for different reasons. While they generally act as a whole in Luke's ending, they are deliberately made more distant in Artem's ending.

Ending #2: Artem dies

I thought it would be fun if there was at least one ending where MC/Zella becomes corrupted, if that makes sense? She loses sight of everything she used to believe in and now only focuses on her career rather than how she gets to the point she wants to reach.

There are deliberate references to main story 6.2 in the pre-choice section (in Artem's POV), and it is again referred to in Artem's death ending (in Zella's POV). This is because it means they get out of one life-threatening situation only to find themselves in other dangerous circumstances once again.

Would Artem have wanted to see who Zella becomes in this ending? Absolutely not! But she's not letting herself see that because it hurts too much.

Ending #3: Vyn dies

This one was hard to write not in an emotional sense, but in a technical sense. You may notice that this is actually the shortest ending out of all five because I was struggling to get across the aftermath in a way that I was satisfied with. The idea in my outline for this ending was a dead end, so I tried to convey that in the team's struggle to accomplish anything for the founders' original mission.

Vyn's actual death, however, is narratively satisfying (to me) in the sense that it's a subversion of expectations. Vyn spends the first few chapters talking about how he would never sacrifice himself (and would only do so for Zella), but when the moment arrives, he does exactly what he said he would not do. Vyn ensures that he becomes the sacrifice. It's a really tragic ending, but he's got agency in his choice.

I deliberately chose not to mention how his name is written on his headstone. Depending on how sad you want the ending to be, you get to decide whether he is remembered as Vyn Richter, Vilhelm Richard Albert de Haspran, or something in between.

Ending #4: Marius dies

In my outline, I put this down as the worst ending. So if you found this one to be the most painful one, I agree!!

It's the irony that Marius, who is supposed to be immune, is the one who gets shot--not by his own choice or by Zella's, but by accident. The person who everyone tried to save could not be saved, and even worse, he's the one who takes the longest to die.

The "JUST SHOOT!" moment that scares Zella into pulling the trigger also happens in the next ending. The only difference is that Zella has already decided to fire the gun in this ending, so her finger is on the trigger. In the other ending, her finger is safely off the trigger so no accidents happen.

In the original outline of this ending, Luke was supposed to die after Pax shuts down their medical centers. But then I realized it would be totally unfair if he died in this ending--especially if you had already decided to skip the Luke ending. I can't say "don't worry, it's possible that your favorites won't die" if they die outside of their own death ending! So I actually like the final version more because you get to see the state that everyone is in after Marius' death.

Ending #5: Everyone lives

This ending is largely accomplished by you (as the reader) and Zella being able to stall for long enough, allowing William and Zangr to arrive with backup! You'll notice that the "JUST SHOOT" moment only happens in this ending and Marius' ending, and that is because Zella stalls for the longest in both of those endings--to differing results.

I thought it was so funny when William Lewis showed up in the Bakerlon event and I realized it would be even funnier if he actually ended up being a heroic figure in this fic's good ending.

Zangr getting away before the choices means that he lives in every ending!

William Lewis getting coffee with the NXX Investigation Team is so funny to me. He has NO CLUE who these people truly are.

The article excerpts in Artem's ending and this ending take inspiration from the Lockwood & Co. books!

This is the ending you have to fight for a little bit because you have to click 'Don't Shoot' three times. Granted, it's easier because for the first two Don't Shoot parts, there is only one choice available to pick. Here, there is some inspiration taken from a particular choice in Ultra Despair Girls (video game), but it's also a way to strengthen Zella's resolve and buy time for the others to arrive on scene.

yO ALSO THIS!!! i think all of us were under the impression that it was three original members and then their appointed successors, but artem being in the original nxx?? that was news to me. i feel like the game implied that artem came on later than the rest, at least that's what i've been thinking. but that does beg the question: why wasn't artem on the hit list if he was part of the original team?

Doctor's Note

Vyn Richter x Reader with general anxiety

Warnings : Not sure if this counts but the punctuation and formatting is probably bad since I don't have enough peace of mind to edit, fem reader, no beta, kinda short, other then that basically just fluff I guess, oh! And usual anxiety stuff is talked about a bit so I'm unsure if that counts as sick, if yes then this is technically a sickfic!

A/n : I wrote this instead of writing my essay for my critical thinking class which is worth 20% of my final grade! No shame and no regret about it! Not feeling great but at least I'm feeling oddly brave today so I decided to share the exact thing I wanted to hear so I hope you don't mind! I hope you guys like it too! I'd like to please ask for no constructive criticism for this post please! I can't handle something like that at the moment and thank you for understanding! Love you guys! Drink water and eat stuff and remember to sleep! Sending lots of hugs and love and warmth! Vyn does too!

Y/n felt restless and unable to shut off the noise in her head, she could hardly focus on the task given to her, however she promised to help Vyn restock the waiting room reading material at Giannovyn since the current ones were a little dated. 

She just finished shelving some magazines and brochures when she felt a familiar touch on her arm, she turned her head to see the comforting smile of Vyn.

"Thank you for the help my rose, let's take a break and pick up where we left off in a bit" he said walking towards his office.

Y/n nodded and hummed in agreement, a smile appearing on her lips as she noticed that Vyn started brewing her favorite tea. Vyn offered her a seat on the chaise lounge he typically has his patients sit on for consults. 

"Sorry for the lack of seating options, we're replacing some of the older equipment and appliances and it would seem the boxes were stacked on top of the chairs" he explained.

"It's alright Vyn, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little curious what it felt like to sit on it, it's probably the most eye catching thing in the room" Y/n chatted.

He moved a coffee table a little closer and placed two cups of tea on the table before he took a seat in his usual armchair.

Y/n leaned a little forward placing both hands around the cup, the warmth and fragrance of the tea was a comforting feeling, however the comfort was short lived as she found herself unable to focus on Vyn or the tea and instead glancing in the direction of the hallway every time someone walked down it, her eyes darting towards any noise in her vicinity.

"Y/n, are you perhaps feeling anxious?" Observed Vyn. 

"Sorry Vyn, could you please repeat that" Y/n asked as she willed herself to look at Vyn and not around her.

Vyn put down his tea and walked towards Y/n, "forgive the sudden intrusion my rose" Vyn said as he gently placed his hand on Y/n's chest feeling the rapid beating of her heart. 

Y/n looked up at Vyn as he moved his hand from her chest to her chin, moving her face slightly side to side, and up and down gently.

"Is everything alright Vyn?" She asked.

"I should be asking you that my poor rose, it would seem you've been experiencing some difficulties causing you to struggle with anxiety" he stated.

"It's not to bad Vyn! I promise! Plus it's way passed clinic hours! You should relax Vyn" Y/n asked.

"Don't worry about that Y/n, for you I always have time, I noticed just now that your heart was racing and having looked at your complexion and your eyes, you seemed to have trouble sleeping at night, that's only a few observations I made, now will my favourite patient tell me what's wrong?" he asked.

Y/n blushed and awkwardly averted her eyes.

"It's really nothing Vyn, just a mix of all aspects of my life, I've been working into the night most nights since I was given harder tasks recently, as well as managing family issues and also everything with the NXX, it's becoming rather overwhelming, but I promise it's ok" Y/n finished.

Vyn considered her words carefully, he could tell how some of these issues greatly affected her. "Have you had enough time to process your emotions about some of these troubles?" He asked.

"Not exactly, it's usually one after another, I just finish up what I was working on and once I'm home I have to deal with anything that happened with my family while I was gone" Y/n answered. 

Vyn considered this and said "I'll be writing you a doctor's note for some time away, don't worry about any repercussions because it won't affect anything, I'll make sure of that and during your time off I'd like you to allow yourself to feel your emotions and process them, and you needn't worry about family interfering or what the NXX will say, you can stay with me for a while if you'd like, you'd have a room to yourself away from any stress or you may have a treatment room here if you would prefer that" 

Y/n blushed hearing the seriousness in Vyn's tone, she really appreciated him taking this seriously. He really was an excellent doctor.

"Thank you Vyn" she said looking down.

Vyn smiled as his slender fingers glided over the screen, printed the note for his dear rose.

The King's most trusted knight, that's what they call him, Vilhelm Richard Albert De Haspran is the King's first choice for any dangerous mission, accompanied meeting and even when his daughter yn needs watching over. What he doesn't know is that his most trusted is absolutely smitten with his daughter and is even in a sneaky relationship with her. Vilhelm: I have a surprise for you. Yn: Oo really? :D. It's 11:55pm and time for your literature classes. Rummaging through your gowns you find an old cloak you could use to escape the palace. "G'day ma'am" one of the knights said to you. "Good day Gus" you say back to him. Suddenly he starts to tower over you. "Only one person calls me Gus..". You thought your cover had been blown until Gustavus starts to laugh. "The princess calls me that, but I obviously know you're not, I mean look at your clothes". You wanted to protest but then he carries on "She's so pretty and all she cares about is that rusty knight Vilhelm, he's literally pushing thirty". You just Pat his shoulder for comfort. "Please tell me you won't tell her what I said, she'll kill me" Gus exaggerates. "I don't need to you already told her yourself" you mumble. "What did you say"? He glances at you. "Nothing Sir Gus!" You wave your hands. "Maybe I could marry you instead, you're pretty and I could provide for you". He smirks feeling proud of himself. "Aaand that's my que to leave" You rush out of his sight. "Wait-". He stares in shock as his ego starts to diminish.

You manage to trick the palace guards to let you out and you roam across the village. You come across a cotton candy stall and stare at it. "Ma'am, would you like to buy some?" A middle-aged man smiles at you from behind the stall. "I don't have any money with me, sir" you smile apologetically. "I'll pay" a hardened voice sounds from a few inches above. It's was Knight Vilhelm! "oh you here" you don't even attempt to play coy because he already knew it was you. "Princess, what are you doing out of the palace, you're father will kill me if he notices you're gone". You pout and play hard to get. "None of your business, sir". He seemed shocked as you normally call him Vyn or Vil or even Baby when you're in private. "Princess," he hands you the cotton candy. "we have to get back to the castle". Vilhelm begged for you to cooperate but you just walk the other way. The expression on his face was priceless, you wouldn't expect such a stoic man to break character so easily. "Okay how about i show you one of my favourite places hm?" You stop in your tracks. You've always wanted to know more about Vilhelm, but you never seemed to be able to break down his walls. You nod and Vilhelm leads you to a body of grass.

"This is my favorite place to come on my days off, my... Dad loved stargazing". He managed to lay down with the thick layers of armor still clung to his body. You lay down next to him and turn to face him, looking into his eyes. " How are we going to explain this to my dad". You say scooting closer to him. "Maybe we could say you stuck out of the house because you were 'bored' and I found you trying to buy some cotton candy". You hit his shoulder and he chuckles. "We should just tell him you were running errands and I wanted to help you out of the kindness of my heart" He looks in your eyes and then at your soft brown lips. "Kindness of your heart?, yeah your heart has been very kind to let me in". He kisses you softly and you savour this moment as it is.

You wish you could have been born a class lower so you could marry this man of great mysteriousness, but then wouldn't want him taking care of any princess other than you.

"Do you see those stars over there?" "Yeah they look like us" "and they seem to be dancing". You get up and pull Vyn up with you. You move his hands with you while you dance. "Don't make me do this" he smiles, admiring the way you move. "You're missing out" you twirl using his limp arm. "Fine I'll join you". He synchronises with your movements, his head layed on you shoulders. "This is nice".
