the ORV comic adaption is so pretty. it's always hit me as the perfect style for the narrative, atmosphere, comedy. never once have I found myself disappointed with how something shown was adapted, most of the time it's better than how I imagined (Lee Hyunsung/Jung Heewon hug you will ALWAYS be famous).

hi! would love to hear about ur art process <3
hi!! there's not much to my process really x'3 it's pretty simple and short!
first is stickmen stule sketch just to have something in front of my eyes, then colors, cause it's the most exciting part!
then it's fussing over colors a bit, sometimes with gradient maps (i figured out how they work and now i WILL use them everywhere), then when the colors look nice, a proper sketch time, and that sketch will serve as a guide for lineless !
Silly comics are even simpler cause there're only two-three steps. Possible thumbnails, then rough sketch, then lines?
(usually text (if there's any) goes under thumbnails but i outlined the comics about yjh keeping bodyparts safe before i drew it so no text was needed)
And i do have a few timelapses here and there but they... make my process out to be way more unhinged than it actually is.

Video ID: A sped up process of drawing an illustration for Lee Hyunsung and Yoo Joonghyuk in front of a crumbling wall.
#id in alt#the only difficult thing about my art process is forgetting which layer has the detail i need#but overall... generic process

Follow up to this post brought to you by @forgetme-eternally-blissfully, in fanfic snippet format because I gave up on drawing the comic (the fanfic was supposed to be a comic draft but I added too many details)
Kim Dokja lays on the ground among the rubble of a ruined building. He twitches a little before his eyes open. The world is blurry. In the distance, he can see a dark blur fluttering around his surroundings. As his vision comes into focus, he can recognize Yoo Joonghyuk searching through the debris.
A sharp pain coming from his side causes Kim Dokja to let out a groan as he struggles to push himself up to a sitting position. The sound catches Yoo Joonghyuk's attention and immediately he starts making a beeline in Kim Dokja's direction.
As Yoo Joonghyuk approaches, Kim Dokja takes note of Yoo Joonghyuk's tattered coat, his bloodstained body, the wounds on his face, hands, legs. None too serious though some deep enough to inevitably leave scars later.
Yoo Joonghyuk is getting closer, kneeling down, reaching his hand out towards Kim Dokja's face, making a move to pull Kim Dokja in when Kim Dokja decides to open his mouth.
"You're not losing your balance and having trouble standing are you? I'm not going to carry you on my back this time."
"Shut up," is all Yoo Joonghyuk says as he wraps his arms around Kim Dokja's shoulders. His grip is tight, one hand on the back of Kim Dokja's head, the other circled around his upper back.
There is a gash in Kim Dokja's side that throbs with pain. Blood loss has his head spinning and his vision blurring again. From where his face is pressed into Yoo Joonghyuk's shoulder, Kim Dokja can smell blood, sweat, smoke. Buildings continue to crumple in the background and the sound of something falling pitters in his ears. His hands tense and untense, relax and remain by his sides.
Kim Dokja lets out a breath and leans into Yoo Joonghyuk, just slightly. Just enough so that Yoo Joonghyuk can tighten his hold by a hair.
----------
Author's notes (what would normally be my image caption):
I said in the referenced post that Kim Dokja has no trouble reciprocating affection once someone else initiates, but I think Yoo Joonghyuk is the exception. Always exceptional, that one. At least during the Scenarios.
Kim Dokja can read his movements, see what Yoo Joonghyuk is aiming to do, can read his mind, dammit. But he can't comprehend his actions. Yoo Joonghyuk acting in a way that Kim Dokja doesn't know about is something that happens more and more often as time goes on, and serves as a reminder of the wall that exists between a protagonist and a reader, but also the wall that exists between two normal people. Because at this moment, Kim Dokja is still struggling to see Yoo Joonghyuk as his own person instead of a protagonist or a 1863x-regressor-to-be. He's blinded by what he knows and has seen in his own past, which he assumes will be Yoo Joonghyuk's future. When he looks at him, does he see those ghosts of the future flickering superimposed over the shape of the man before him? This is the sort of wall that exists between them.
So when Yoo Joonghyuk acts outside of Kim Dokja's expectations, Kim Dokja tries to push them back on course with banter. "Yoo Joonghyuk is getting closer, kneeling down, reaching his hand out towards Kim Dokja's face, making a move to pull Kim Dokja in-" Kim Dokja sees all of this, takes note of all of this, knows what's to come of it. Doesn't understand it one bit. He's not oblivious. It's more like, "Why? Why me? Why would someone feel this way about and want to do these things with me?" He KNOWS the effect he has on people. He intentionally calculates how much he interacts with Jung Heewon and Lee Hyunsung to ensure their loyalty towards him in the early scenarios (not so much so after like Scenario 5-ish so we're talking early-early scenarios. After that point he more supports them in the direction they want to go (when that direction is the direction he already wanted them to go anyways. something something picking teammates because he knew they were already loyal and righteous by nature, nurturing them so that they would be able to carry out their justice no matter the adversary. He chose them because he knew they were loyal and strong, but they weren't loyal or strong at the time. But they would be in the future. But they wouldn't have been without him. But in another time where he didn't exist they were strong anyways see this is how he is able to have ultimate faith in his party members and know the kind of support he has given them while still being unable to recognize his own value in the grand scheme of things. Because they would have been fine without him, he's SEEN it. This is another wall between him and other people, another future ghost)). So he knows how much influence he has in other peoples' lives. But he values himself so little that he is blind to the emotional, sentimental weight he has to these people. No matter how much he knows he's done for them, he won't see himself as worthy of genuine praise or recognition, affection, love.
So this lack of self recognition extends to his perception of all of his companions, but especially so to Yoo Joonghyuk. Yoo Joonghyuk is probably the person whom Kim Dokja is the most strict about characterization with. Kim Dokja knows him the best, it's true, but he also doesn't know a damn thing about him as a person instead of a character and that makes him feel a certain way. Vulnerable, I think. Lonely. That childish feeling of betrayal when the characters walk off the page without him. There are sides to people and characters that you will never know simply because they weren't observed. And there are sides of people that you have no right to know. It is by becoming a person instead of a reader that you must abide by those rules and give up omniscience. Part of being a person and recognizing another's personhood is to willingly not know everything about them.
Anyways. He's not there yet. Not by Hug Attempt #2. This was supposed to have 3 parts with the last one set after the epilogue but we'll see if I ever get to it.
#I AM A FOOL.#I thought posting the snippet would be easier for me but instead I ended up going on a long ramble in the author's notes.#so uh yeah enjoy your 300 words of fic and 700 words of meta#orv#omniscient reader's viewpoint#orv spoilers#writing tag#reading tag#btw. did u kno. did you know this whole 'kdj misses the hug cue' idea all began because. becaus e i missd a hug cue. again.#thats right#on several occasions people have t-posed at me and i just gave them the polite smile#they gotta be like 'im giving you a hug!' for me to get it#then i was like huh sounds like something kdj would do and i like bullying yjh

[ID: The first image are black and white chibi fullbody drawings of Lee Hyunsung, Yoo Joonghyuk, Kim Dokja, and Lee Jihye from Omniscient Reader standing next to each other. The second image is a two panel comic. The first panel: A bunch of banging sound effects covering a door. Dokja is holding his face in his hands, sweating profusely and generally looking anxious. He is saying “Oh my god, its HER-” and Hyunsung looks back at him in surprise. The second panel: A zoom in on Hyunsung with him looking even more nervous. He is imagining a very feminine faceless person wearing a long black coat with an ominous aura rising from her body. The next thought bubble is him incredulously emphasizing the pronoun. End ID.]

I am legitimately confused by repeated comments that ORV's opening is slow or boring or uninteresting, especially people who say you need to read [insert some very large number of pages/chapters] to get to the "good" parts. I've seen this on multiple socials at this point and I originally wrote this post months ago, but recent potential news has brought back people saying this again, particularly in recommending it to other people/trying to get other people into it.
I would personally argue that ORV has a good opening. A very good opening. And the early part of it is very good, too.
ORV opens with a literal train of angst, attempted friendship, workplace harassment (Sangah getting harassed by her boss), some neat Korean folklore (dokkaebis hello), graphic violence (remember when Bihyung just kills the president on TV?), a group of people in a subway attempting to beat an old woman to death, Dokja winning a pissing contest with a teenage edgelord, a bunch of people getting murdered, bonding in times in despair over a really unique form of problem solving, a man breaking open subway doors with his bare arms, young love, and magic, fleeing onto a bridge that gets exploded to bits by an evil gremlin, a horde of zombies appearing, the protagonist getting new magic powers, and then his getting held by the neck over said broken bridge in a complex back and forth with the "true" story protagonist before getting dropped into the mouth of a giant sea monster.
It covers topics like the limits of human compassion in times of strife, the complicated presence of the military (Dokja hated his time being drafted v Hyunsung's military leadership doesn't save anyone), international relations (Sangah is learning Spanish), trope subversion (I mean it is and isn't the entire book and Dokja's character, but he's constantly trying to be 5-10 steps ahead of what's going on, including literally fleeing Joonghyuk until Joonghyuk grabs him by the collar), workplace harassment, bullying, and it's all taking place during multiple apocalypse scenarios.
This is the like first 11 chapters of the book. And it never stops. There are "slower" moments, moments where characters take a breather (like it takes a while for Dokja to negotiate his contract with Bihyung, which is slow if you ignore the fact Dokja is arguing with an interdimensional being/alien for the limits of his own life and autonomy in the most dangerous streaming event imaginable, knowing he may still die if he gambles wrong on his personal wikipedia brain), but it's still frequently confrontational, whether that confrontation is about what characters mean to each other, what lives are at stake, finding your purpose in life, adaptability to complex circumstances, overcoming trauma and self-doubt...
And it's more intense in a way in the manhwa adaptation because you can clearly see most of it visualized (e.g., how visually wrecked the characters get, how young the kids are, how terrifying the monsters are, how scary the odds are, and how dangerous Dokja's gambles can really get with a fickle streaming audience), and Sleepy-C's art is gorgeous.
I just have to wonder (though this is more of a rhetorical question), what on earth do people consider fast? Because I am quite honestly terrified of what the answer is.
Like I get that ORV is long. It can be hard to recommend very long books to folks (and as the manhwa keeps going, long comics). To each their own, everyone is different, what appeals to me won't appeal to others. But there's a difference between "it's hard to recommend a very long work to someone" and "it's hard to recommend something that's long and takes a while to get into", and maybe folks are just writing the former a bit weirdly. I completely understand having trouble recommending long series to people. Also ORV has a very complex plot and I don't blame folks having trouble recommending that. I'm writing fic for later parts of orv and other manhwa and I dread explaining all the context for all that to someone who hasn't read them.
That being said, ORV has a very good introduction. Both chapter 1 of the novel and episode 1 of the manhwa are very good. They're not perfect, I can't say I was hooked from the immediate moment I started reading the page, but both of them have good introductions and it doesn't stop, and there's stuff to love in just about every chapter/episode, and I was definitely hooked enough by the time I finished to keep going to chapter/episode 2. Chapter 1 of the novel has great angst and character building, and it's funny and sweet and tragic. When I first read Dokja trying, earnestly, to recommend TWSA and getting harassed about it and worrying it will hurt this art and artist he cares about, but not being able to do much else to give thanks for this experience because of his circumstances, I cried. The first page/episode of the manhwa has them delicious boys love vibes and gorgeous art (and cute baby Dokja, I die for him), and the promise of a fascinating story ahead, and then the following page/episode has more gorgeous art and angst and great characters (combining them cause the first page feels sort of more like a teaser than a first page, though Episode 0 ends with a spread of Kimcom that makes me tear up). We'll unfortunately never know if I'd have loved ORV as much if I'd read the novel first, but I like to think I would cause ORV's opening is just that good.
I just truly, truly do not understand the sentiment that idk the opening and the first [insert large number of pages/chapters] aren't good or interesting or engaging enough. Maybe I'm out of touch. To each their own on what appeals, maybe I'm built different (doubt it though) but it just feels kind of dismissive of ORV's opening, in both the novel and the manhwa, which are both really good. Will it win over everyone? No. It's fine if you weren't grabbed by the opening or the first [insert however many pages/chapters/arcs]. It's fine if you took a while, even a long while to get into it, or never really did, and maybe don't like the manhwa, which is a great gateway into the story, or don't like the novel for whatever reason and prefer the manhwa. And at the end of the day it's just random opinions online, we all have different ones. Make the posts that appeal to you on your blog, complain on your socmed, whatever. But the opening is good, it keeps you very engaged with a lot of difficult scenarios, the characters are great and fun and funny, in those parts especially, and idk why I'm supposed to pretend that's not the case.
Anyway I don't like writing complaint posts. The opening and general start are excellent and Imma go back and cry over Dokja again ty singNsong for my tears.
#orv#omniscient reader's viewpoint#I don't get it#I really don't get it#whenever I see this I wonder if I just retconned how the opening goes and then I go back and read it#and remember oh no it's a train of Dokja angst and him hanging out with Sangah and it's so sad and thrilling#episode 0's art is gorgeous#I remember just being stunned by looking at Dokja and Gilyoung on the bridge and wondering what that was#remember when Dokja crawled through poisonous fog and rescued Heewon#remember when he had to hold off a mob#remember when a landlord turns guns on him#remember the movie dungeon#remember all the joongdok vibes#remember the friendship building between him and all the characters#rereading I always remember how much fic I wanted to write but didn't cause it would get in the way of reading more#after like 24 hours of nonstop reading I gave up and had to write something and that's how my first fic was written#allowing me to return to reading#just cause he's not always fighting gods in the first few arcs doesn't mean he's not facing dangerous scenarios#he gets roped in by a coworker to a scheme where people beat each other to death for vending machine food#I'm not saying it's the best webnovel out there#even in its own genre#I haven't read enough to know#but it is very good for what it is#tbh I think singNsong are actually better at openings#twatf's opening bits are a lot better than the later ones#orv just kept being good after that#fallfthoughts

Hi Kairo,
I'm Amelia, and I'm a big fan of your work! I was wondering if it would be okay for me to translate your Hyunsung one-shot, "Werewolf AU Comic," into Vietnamese, my native language. I’ll make sure to credit you properly and include links to the original post and your social media profiles.
Thank you for considering my request! I really appreciate it.
Best, Amelia

Light Kiyoung (VII)
chapter 12, light kiyoung (vii) ; second comic for rsm
“I see now… yes… I was wrong… I understand everything now. None of you were worth protecting in the first place.”
‘Fuck……. It’s over… That was so scary. I really thought Brigade Hyunsung would come out…’
second comic in and you can see i've picked up a few more tricks! may have gone overboard with the effects, but go big or go home, right?
one of my favorite things about this is the small little details i put in. like for example, the little panel where kiyoung said he wanted to live luxuriously, i drew hsky plushies next to each other because i thought it was cute! they were supposed to be like plushies that you'd have on your bed, hehe.

What are your ORV ships?
「The Constellations are paying attention to your words.」
「The answer will determine your fate.」
o sheet.
well from what i know so far (KEEP IN MIND I READ COMIC AND THEREFORE AM NOT AS FAR AS NOVEL READERS)
obviously love joongdok/all other versions of their ship name
i really like yoohankim too but not really just sooyoung x dokja. i feel like they work amazing so long as joonghyuk is also there but alone it feels too much like brotp rather than otp
i like the idea of seolhwa and joonghyuk but i dont know too much about her yet
sangah and sooyoung is cool just bc they fight well together and i love a good enemies/rivals to lovers
i do not like sangah x dokja. i dont know what it is but i just dont. cant see it. platonicaly? yes of course 10/10 but romanticaly? no.
dont really have any other ships. ive seen like one post of hyunsung x dokja and i thought it was nice but not my first choice.
cant think of a single ship for heewon. tbh she gives aroace spec vibes and i cant really see her with anyone. the friendship(aka bullying) between her and dokja is my favorite thing tho
wouldnt hate heewon and hyunsung tho, same vibes as adhd gf and golden retriever bf so thatd prob work nice.
