rambling about commissions under the cut

these kinds of commissions are the reason I don’t charge extra for original commissions (vs copies of my previous work), despite sketching and reference hunting taking hours at times. and why I love making variations on the copies too. I want to encourage people to ask me to make new things!

I always enjoy the commissions I take, I generally don’t take them if they don’t suit my art style or if I would find them tedious, but getting a commission that pulls from things I’ve already done and adds new elements, especially ones I wouldn’t have thought to add, is so satisfying!

This may seem like an odd question, but is knuckles still the last of his kind in your AU? If he is, then wouldn’t it make sense for him to want biological kids- if only to somewhat rekindle his dying race?? If he isn’t then where are the other echidnas? Is Knuckles aware of them? Actually- does he remember anything specific from his tribe? Like echidna traditions?

I receive this kind of question a lot and though I've answered it before, I think it's important to reiterate some of the ideas I've talked about in the past.

To answer your first question, yes in my AU Knuckles is still the last of The Echidnas. From the games, it seems Knuckles still has a good amount of knowledge about Echidna traditions and duties so I do try to honor that in my AU.

To address your question about 'biological kids' and 'rekindling his dying race' I have three points to make:

First, in my AU Rouge does not want to have biological children. She has no interest in getting pregnant. It is not Rouge's duty to continue the Echidna bloodline.

Second, in my AU Knuckles wants to be a father just because he wants to have a family. It's not to serve the purpose of replenishing the echidnas, it's about wanting to nurture others. I think adoption is a great fit because he, too, is an orphan and had to learn that just because you're the 'last of your kind that doesn't mean you're alone.' He learned firsthand that family means more than blood.

Third, I believe the legacy we leave behind is far more important than continuing a bloodline. In my AU, Knuckles continues the legacy of The Echidnas by teaching the lessons and values he learned from them onto others--both by raising his adopted children with the traditions and stories he was raised with and through his creation of the Young Heroes Program. This way, The Echidna legacy has the potential to grow even further beyond his reach and live on forever.
