Drowning in sorrow

He knew he shouldn't have said it, but he has grown exhausted from her constant nagging about his lack of time spent with her and how clingy she could be.

After all, Monsieur Neuvilette was a busy man. The Chief Justice couldn't abandon his work just because she wanted attention, even if she was his beloved. Fontaine only had him, the nation only had one protector! Especially after Furina gave up her life in the trial once it was revealed she wasn’t the true archon. And so the argument finally exploded in rain.

"Forget it, petit chou." Neuvilette spoke, his voice trembled from the cold rain yet it remained calm and aloof.

"If I knew this sooner, I wouldn’t have accepted this relationship."

she knew they were arguing but she didn’t know he was that mad. Her voice stopped screaming, her body frozen in place, her eyes widened. It seems that time has but frozen her in place, her feet rooted into the concrete ground.

She stood outside with him as the rain lashed down, soaking the two completely. Their hair was sticking to their faces, a stark contrast to their usual, well put together appearance.

As of right now she didn’t know that Neuvilette was the hydro dragon, meaning she didn’t know it only rained when he was unhappy.

She tried to respond but her voice gave no sound as she thought his harsh words.

Originally, she had come to surprise her love with a bouquet of flowers.

She was wandering the bustling streets of Fontaine and spotted a flower shop with fresh blue flowers. She immediately got to work piecing together baby blue lillie’s, soft white baby breaths, sky blue tulips and sapphire roses. It took the better half of her morning. But all that was worth it for her lover

She brought the bouquet of flowers to where she knew Neuvilette would be on his lunch break. However, after dealing with a headache of a case earlier that day, all he wanted was some peaceful alone time. And she didn’t get that did she? So she approached the white haired man and grinned dopely. She wanted to talk to him and spend some quality time before she handed him the bouquet, but he, in an annoyed tone, asked to be alone. She had thought she did something wrong, so she kept asking until he exploded on her.

Months of pent up frustration at her, at Fontaine, at the world was all dumped onto her. Before long the sky began crying with her. Of course, he could only let his frustration out on her, who else could he blame if not her? He knew that she meant well. She was a kind, loving person after all. Always putting others first, never asking for anything in return.

Which was probably the reason why he exploded. He was tired. Frustrated. The weight of responsibility had taken its toll on him, and he found himself snapping at you because she was the only one who would never snap back. And because he felt safe being vulnerable with her. He almost loathed how much she loved him, knowing full well that he didn't deserve it.

It wasn’t his fault! Centuries of frustration, anger and resentment was bound to explode one day or another. He was tired, overwhelmed. But she didn’t understand, why her?

She dropped the delicately packed bouquet behind her hand in shock. Or maybe it was in anger? And with that she whispered quietly, so quiet that if not for his heightened senses, he might’ve missed it. “I’m sorry…” and with that , she ran. She ran and she ran until she was somewhere new. She ran until her legs gave up on her. She collapsed under a large oak tree, and she cried.

He stood there speechless, he wanted to call out for her, he opened his mouth to, but no words came out. It was like an invisible force kept him from moving until she was out of his sight. The rain poured even harder than before, almost as if it were mocking him.

Ever since her teen years, she didn’t have much. Not much friends, not a lot of money or popularity, not enough attention and love. Maybe that was why she was so clingy? So demanding? Was this why no one stayed with her?

She knew that people all eventually leave, leave her to her own mind. She never had a single person last more than a decade with her, be it friend or lover. Maybe Neuvilette wasn’t any different? This brought her a weird sense of comfort. At least she could blame it on some sort of curse that was put upon her.

Soon she passed out under the tree from exhaustion. She was emotionally exhausted from their argument and physically from all her crying. Her body gave up due to lack of oxygen. She had curled up as a way to conserve heat. She slept under the tree soundlessly for the entire night as the rain raged on.

A few weeks passed and she avoided Neuvilette like the plague. It’s not like he was actively searching for her anyway. During a recent trial, a shocking discovery was made about the fact that Fontainians could dissolve in water from the Primordial Sea. She had assumed this was due to the fact that every Fontainian was born with “sin”.

Knowing that she was a true fontainian, knowing that no one can love her truly. She set out to seek for the deadly water. She searched and she searched, and finally, she discovered it thanks to an individual named “Marcel”. She paid good money for it. It was ironic, she paid for her death. She waited for a rainy day. That didn’t take long as Neuvilette himself was drowning in guilt.

On a particularly rainy day, she stood in her garden and looked up at the sky.

“Hydro dragon! Hydro dragon! Don’t cry!” the neighbourhood kids chanted happily as they splashed around in the water puddles.

“Hydro dragon, hydro dragon… don’t cry” she repeated with a smile, a smile that held everything but joy. Her voice was weak when she spoke. A once joyful and energetic young girl, who let nothing get her down. Finally took off her facade of a mask. She was tired of pretending that she wasn’t upset with everyone leaving. At least, this time she’ll be the first to permanently leave.

She sighed as she prayed for her reincarnated self to live a better life. She was never one for religion, but who knows? It’s the end of her life, she might as well. She pulled the cork out of the glass vial and poured it over her head, allowing it to coat her whole body. It burned, it stung and then…nothing.

She tried to scream but the water had already burned through her vocal cords. It was so painful yet before she could register the pain, it was gone. It felt blissful. Almost like a large weight was lifted off of her chest, a weight that was previously suffocating her. She felt free.

She wasn’t worried about her death, it’s not like anyone would come seeking for her anyway.

She joined the other young ladies that had died in this way. They all asked if she was the 23rd experiment. Experiment? No she died by her own will. And she was trapped in limbo for all of time, until the end of the universe.

Meanwhile in Fontaine, Neuvilette was standing outside her front door, a handpicked bouquet of pink baby breaths, white tulips and red lillie’s. Waiting patiently as he knocked on the door, not knowing there was no one to open the door for him. Not now, not ever again.

He also did not know, that he would be the one to fulfill the prophecy, drowning himself in sorrow and taking all of Fontaine with him. He looked up at the sky, and at the now underwater Fontaine. He stood at the highest peak of Fontainian architecture, watching buildings after buildings sink underwater along. The very nation he swore to protect. The nation he gave up his lover for, drowned with him.

“Ah…I’m tired” was the last words spoken by the silver haired man as the rain drowned the nation he used to love so dearly.

Bad Sansuary: Nightmare - Shield

It happened suddenly as these things do.

One moment, you were in the middle of making lunch and the next, the lights flickered before going out entirely. You stopped what you were doing and checked a few other light switches just to come to the conclusion that the power was out. Fine, you could handle this.

It was weird that it had happened so suddenly though. The weather was supposed to be perfect today, so maybe it was a freak accident? You guessed someone could've knocked over a hydro pole or a transformer could've blown up.

Then you became aware of the building shaking. You actually lost your balance and several dishes you had left on the table fell, shattering on the floor. Not wanting to have a wall collapse or have glass explode in your face, you crawled into the hallway and huddled against the archway. That was what you were supposed to do in the event of an earthquake, right? Or was it to get in the bathtub with something sturdy on top of you?

The tremors seemed to stop after a couple of minutes and your building seemed to be in one piece, but now there was another problem. You could hear sirens and what sounded like a security alarm going off. There was another sound though, one that filled you with an overwhelming feeling of terror.

A distant but steady roar.

You staggered to your feet and practically yanked your front door off its hinges, desperately hoping you were wrong.

The world outside was nothing like what it should've been. Many hydro poles were down, leaving the power lines dangling dangerously near the ground and you could see large plumes of smoke rising into the air from surrounding neighborhoods.

A couple of your neighbors apparently had the same idea as you and had congregated on the outside walkway as they tried to figure out what was wrong. You could hear murmurings of the phone lines being out, someone's pipes apparently bursting from the initial quakes, and even rumours of a gas leak.

The sky had been torn in twain, like someone had ripped a piece of paper in half. The wind was whipping your hair around and you could see many small objects being sucked up into the black void that was now the atmosphere.

Nothing came back.

You'd been through this before.

Last time you'd tried to flee the city or at least get somewhere safe. With how poorly that had gone, you weren't about to repeat the scenario and die for real this time.

What could you do when the world was coming to an end?

Nothing.

There was literally nothing you could do.

Emergency services were likely swamped as they undoubtedly tried to deal with this disaster. If the phone lines were truly down, you couldn't call anyone to find out if they were okay or if they needed help, not that you had anyone to call anyways save for people that generally disliked you. Since the outside was so dangerous, you basically had no choice but to shelter in place.

So that is what you did. Call it giving up if you wanted, but you weren't about to spend your last living moments running for your life, only to die horribly. If you were going to die, you were going to be as comfortable as was feasibly possible.

You started for your bedroom but hesitated to actually enter. Changing trajectory, you retrieved your favorite romance novel from where you'd previously left it in the living room. It was too dark and you were too frazzled to even think about reading right now, but there was another reason.

In the middle of its pages, you'd been pressing a few of the daisies, forget-me-nots, and yellow tulips Axe had brought you for your birthday months ago. You hadn't seen him for over a week and while you missed him terribly, this was the only thing you had to remind yourself of the good times you'd spent together.

You also pulled your chess set from the game cupboard. While it wasn't something Dust had given you, the fun you'd had playing with him had been enough to give the game a new sort of sentimentality. You frankly missed his random night visits and snarky sense of humor as it wasn't a void either of the others really filled.

With your valuables in hand, you finally returned to your bedroom and closed the door behind yourself to hopefully mitigate the sounds of chaos outside. Although it didn't help much and the roaring of the Void had only seemed to have grown louder.

Depositing the book and game on your bed, you pulled out your favorite pair of leggings, the very ones Killer had somehow gotten mended for you, from their place in the drawer. You slipped them on and your fingers lightly brushed over the knees and the embroidered vines with red hearts. While he had been a metaphorical thorn in your side, you had to admit that it had been fun getting to know him.

You wrapped yourself up in your blankets and clutched the book with the flowers and the chess set to your chest. You'd been trying your best to remain calm but now you could feel tears pooling at the corners of your eyes, threatening to breach the dam and pour down your cheeks. Your breath was coming in ragged gasps and you could feel your body trembling.

You didn't want to die.

You'd learned so many new things and discovered a side to yourself that you'd never dreamed possible. A bolder, more confident side that wouldn't let people walk all over you anymore. Well, you might still have to work on that, but you'd been getting better!

You had met a band of misfits, and while they'd definitely be the type of people your parents wouldn't approve of, they had quickly become close friends. You didn't have to ask, nor did you want to, but you knew in your soul that all of them would do anything to keep you safe, even kill without question. You weren't entirely sure about Nightmare yet but you knew that he wouldn't sit by if you were in danger.

So where was he now?

You'd promised to consider his deal but you'd never been able to give him your answer. Not for a lack of trying mind you but it wasn't something you could take lightly.

What he offered, was for you to drop everything and everyone you had ever known to go with him, to a completely new environment that was unlike anything you'd experienced before. You didn't know much about the multiverse or world codes, but you were vaguely familiar with the multiverse theory.

The main issue you had with his deal was that you didn't know what would happen to you if you accepted it. The multiverse was apparently massive and home to countless people, some of which could actually hop between worlds like Nightmare and his boys. It was boggling to think about but seemed completely normal to them. A boring person like you had no place in a world like that.

You couldn't help but sob as the apartment complex trembled from another series of tremors. You were so scared. You didn't want to die!

In your despair, you let out an anguished scream for the one person who could possibly come find you. "Nightmare!"

But nobody ca-

The room temperature seemed to grow chilly and the shadows swirled before coalescing into the familiar shape of the god of negativity himself. His cyan eyelight seemed to be burning brighter than you'd ever seen it and his tentacles practically writhed with pent up adrenaline. He only needed to glance at your trembling form to understand what was going on and he rapidly moved to the edge of your bed.

"Are you hurt?" he asked in a low voice.

"No," you croaked, "I'm just so glad to see you..."

He exhaled slowly through his teeth and seemed to focus on a specific spot on the ceiling. "You've probably already figured it out, but your world is in the middle of collapsing. I estimate you maybe have a few minutes before everything disappears and is reclaimed by the Void."

His gaze snapped to your own and seemed to pierce into your very soul before he spoke again. "Will you accept the deal and come with me?"

You opened your mouth to respond when a rumbling crash cut you off. In a fraction of a second, several things happened. Nightmare's tentacles snatched you up. You were coated in fine layer of drywall dust. Nightmare used his tentacles to shield you from the roof caving in.

The dust caused you to cough violently when you accidentally breathed it in and when you managed to recover, you found yourself clinging to his body. He was clutching you against his ribcage and continuing to shield you with both himself and his tentacles.

The roof was gone and the sky was now completely black. The sheer force of the wind threatened to blow you away and you could barely hear yourself think above the roaring of the black.

Nightmare's gaze flicked to the darkness above and then back to you. He appeared completely unharmed and only slightly dusty from the rubble, but the ooze that covered his body seemed to be rapidly absorbing it.

"Yes! I accept! Nightmare, please...take me away from here..." you shouted above the clamor of destruction.

He didn't even hesitate.

His tendrils wrapped around your body, basically binding you against him. You just managed to close your eyes before the roar of the Void was replaced with dead silence. The wind had completely ceased blowing too and a numb feeling began to spread over your body.

The numbness persisted for far longer than any teleport had before and yet you didn't notice. In fact, the only thing you could feel besides Nightmare's hold on your body, was the way the box for your chess set and the edges of your book was cutting into your arms.

You felt his hold loosen and the temperature equalize out into a more comfortable one. You could hear laughter from somewhere nearby and the crackling of a fireplace.

"hey, the boss is back!" Killer's unmistakable tenor voice rang out. "what happened for you to leave so suddenly...?"

You quietly glanced over in the direction of his voice. In one of the few times you'd ever seen him speechless, Killer had an odd look on his skull as he seemed to take in your distraught appearance.

Moments later though, he tilted his skull and flashed his trademark smirk at you. "hey angel~ long time no see..." he purred.

Nightmare made a tisk sound and leveled him with a stern frown. "She's slipping into shock. Tell the others she'll be staying and to get things ready." His tone of voice took on a much more commanding tone that you'd never heard before as he spoke.

It was quite effective though or at least you thought it was. Killer's permanent grin widened slightly and he gave a curt nod.

"sure thing." Before turning away, he winked at you in a mildly suggestive way, but knowing him, he was only half serious about it. This guy could barely take things seriously even in a situation as dire as this one it seemed.

Nightmare began carrying off into another part of the...castle? Everything seemed to be made of gray stone and the ceilings were vaulted, but you couldn't be sure. It would certainly suit someone as regal and dramatic as him though.

He'd mentioned you were going into shock. Was that what you were feeling? Sure, your heart was still beating like crazy and your breathing seemed to be shallow, but you didn't think you were actually in danger. You did feel kinda cold, but in a numb sort of way, and maybe you were a bit lightheaded? It was too complicated to think about. You just wanted to go to sleep and wake up to discover that this had all been another bad dream...

You briefly heard Killer relay the news to the others but he didn't get to finish his sentence before they apparently decided to see for themselves.

Nightmare stopped walking and half turned to look behind him. You could feel his grip tighten around your body in an almost possessive way. "No, you'll only overwhelm her," he nearly growled.

You could see Axe and Dust standing barely six feet away, having likely teleported as soon as they found out you were here.

Axe's deep red eyelight had shrunk down significantly to the size of a dime and other than his stiff posture, he was giving off serious kicked puppy vibes. He went to take a step forward, only for Dust to catch his arm and stop him. Although you knew if Axe was truly motivated to get to you, Dust wouldn't have been able to hold him back like that.

The giant of a skeleton clenched his fists and made a quiet sound of frustration. "you'll take good care of her, right?" he asked Nightmare in a low tone that not so subtly sounded like a threat.

"Of course, you can spend time with her all you want once she's calmed down."

Axe let out a heavy sigh and nodded. Turning his attention to you, his gaze softened significantly although his smile was rather tight. "i'll make ya somethin' nice if ya feel like eatin' later, lil' chip," he murmured.

Dust had been silent throughout the whole interaction, although he was practically searing a hole through your head with how intensely he was staring at you. He hadn't even broken eye contact to stop Axe from upsetting Nightmare. You couldn't read what he was thinking at all which was pretty concerning.

He remained in place, just staring at you, as Axe turned to leave. Nightmare let out a low warning growl which seemed to get his attention at least.

Dust tugged his hood tighter over his skull and turned to leave, although not without making a comment of his own. "...you'll be okay, bean." He disappeared immediately afterwards to who knows where.

Nightmare sighed and continued onto his original goal. He ended up bringing you into a frankly extravagant bedroom and only then did he let go of you. He set you on the bed, wrapped you in one of the softest blankets you'd ever felt, and even propped you up with pillows until you were comfortable. At some point, he set the things you'd managed to bring with you on the bedside table.

"This will be your room," he finally said. "You may decorate it as you see fit but do let me know if you need anything."

You weakly nodded.

He sat down on the edge of the bed and took one of your hands in his own, running his thumb along your knuckles. "There is one more thing I need to do, my dear."

He paused for a moment to let his words register. "You are still considered an incode and technically bound to your old world. For your safety, I need to sever the connection between your soul and the old code, which will classify you as an outcode. I would explain more, but I suspect you're not exactly in much of a state to process all of it."

When you frowned, he lightly stroked your cheek with his knuckles in an attempt to reassure you. "It's okay, I'll be as gentle as I can," he said softly. "Just relax and trust me."

Well, now you were certainly feeling the confusion that apparently came with shock, so it was a good thing he wasn't about to info dump on you. It didn't help with making you feel any less anxious though, as you had no idea what severing the connection meant or entailed.

"Okay... I trust you."

Nightmare nodded and moved his hand from your cheek to your chest while keeping hold of your hand with his other. He focused for a moment and you started to feel that familiar pressure before your soul floated from your chest.

It was still so beautiful.

"This might hurt a little," he hummed.

Before you even had the chance to protest, he grasped your soul, causing you to gasp at the suddenness. His cyan eyelight burned brighter for a second and he abruptly yanked your soul slightly away from you.

It hurt more than a little but even spraining your ankle hurt more than severing this had. While you could feel the stinging of tears that threatened to fall, you managed to blink them away.

Nightmare gently guided your soul back into your chest and smiled at you. "There now, that wasn't so bad, was it?" he murmured in that velvety tone you'd come to love.

He moved a few strands of hair behind your ear, his claws affectionately brushing against your skin as he did so. He briefly glanced towards the closed bedroom door before looking back at you.

"I think I'm going to keep you to myself for a bit, my dear. Just until I know you'll be okay after all that excitement." As he spoke, he laid down next to you and wrapped you up in his tendrils, pulling you against his ribcage.

You couldn't have protested even if you wanted to. It was probably a good thing he wasn't about to leave you alone as he seemed to have the power to completely calm you down whenever you were upset. You were going to sleep for a while though.

Maybe things would be better when you woke up.

After more than 6 years I managed to find a way to play the sims 2 again as it is apparently impossible to quit playing it. Andddd I come with a very niche default/mod I have created to suit my playing needs a bit more. 

Nobody would bat an eye at people named Rose, Max, Summer, Daisy, Victor etc. Yet, they all have a literal meaning, and they are not the only ones. Across cultures, people have been naming their children after literal things, feelings, adjectives, virtues and more, so why would Tulip be any weirder than Rose? I love giving my sims names that we would consider quirky or strange so I created a name replacement mod so you can too if you want to!

This mod will replace the default names the game gives new townies and NPCs that have their own name. The default includes 200 female surnames, 200 male surnames and 230 lastnames (for both genders). Keep in mind that it will only work on townies and NPCs that generate after you've installed this mod.

I was inspired by nature, outer space, the weather, food, animals, math, random adjectives, colors and more! You can see a selection of some of the names that my game generated in the image. A full list is included in the download. Well, the National flower is the Rainbow Rose. Though labeled a rose, it closer resembles a tulip. And though labeled rainbow, it's actually more of a light pink color with yellow on the tips of the petals. They smell very nice and considered the flower of love by the Fontainian people.

Marcotte's are very common and grow everywhere. They're tall with multiple buds sprouting from one stock. Some of the smaller villages will typically use the nectar in their cores for baking or medicine. They're more of an orangy red color and smell very sweet, almost like honey.

Romaritime flowers most commonly grow under water, and the ones that do grow on land won't fully bloom unless completely submerged, or at the very least are soaked with water. They are light blue and an almost lavender shade of purple and don't have much of a smell. Seeing as how scent doesn't carry through water and they are native to the oceans of Fontain.

Though they are quite beautiful, I don't think those would be the best choice for decorating the Grand Bazaar.

Lumidoce bells are a deeper blue with bits of purple and green, and also have multiple buds. It is a lesser common flower but they are quite pretty and smell very plant-like. Like you stuck your nose in a tree.

Pluie Lotus's typically grow on beaches at the waters edge, though they can also be found near ponds and lakes as well. The center is indigo with white and gold flower tips, and they smell very similar to Padisarah's. I think you'd like these ones best, Nilou.

And my personal favorite, the Lakelight Lily. It's a completely blue flower, and almost looks like the entire thing is made out of water instead of being a plant at all. These flowers are bioluminescent with petals spreading outward underneath a glowing bubble. If I remember correctly, I believe these flowers were also favored by the Hydro Archon during her time on the throne. They are very beautiful, and smell like fruit.

First day of junior year completed! My classes seem cool and I like that I have returning friends in them, especially Japanese class. I will say I’m not too much of a fan of my big gap between classes but I can’t do anything about it and I can get class work done during that time. Tomorrow I have 3 back to back classes which I’m sure will fry my brain but we will see.

Karina Alexandre - Le Chevalier de L'étincelle

Once a knight of Fontaine’s Gendarmerie, known as Le Chevalier de L'étincelle.  Karina is assumed cold and unapproachable, not because of her demeanor, but because of the lifeless Vision that hangs at her hip, a self-imposed mark of disgrace and guilt.

PROLOGUE

Whenever she thinks of that day, it always amazes her how ordinary the events were.

At the age of twenty, she led her first command.  She was young, dreaming of the glory that would come with a place at Court.  A girl of the working-middle-class, with a tailor for a father and a seamstress for a mother, both of whom settled too early but built their business on the solid foundations of quality and its price.

Karina holds a sword as easily as she does a needle, well-versed in combat and strategy.  Blessed with an Electro Vision at fifteen, by then she was already on the path to serve the public and provide safety and order in the name of Justice.  

The scales, however, would not be in her favor that day.

CHARACTER STORY I

She should have known, in hindsight.  All of the signs were there.

When the Hydro Archon, Focalors, took power from Naphula, the original Hydro Archon, the country barely had time to mourn.  The news was shocking, rumors of assassination.  But the transition of power was all-consuming and there was too much to keep track of.

Karina’s commander was given a higher rank.  With it, came favor and power.

She should have been wary of those with the charisma to entice.  Who said one thing and did another.  Who played with emotions as if they were no more than puppet strings or the chords of an instrument.  But she was young, foolish, inexperienced in the ways of courting.  That he hated her Vision was merely…a mark of difference between them.

But by the time the seed of doubt was planted, many had already been killed and the perpetrator remained at large.  It never occurred to her that there was something odd about the interpretation of Justice.  

Not then.

Not until it was already far too late.

CHARACTER STORY II

At first, she was eager to please.  Eager to serve.  Eager to become part of the larger machine.  It didn’t matter much that her commanding officer held discriminatory views of Allogenes; it was hardly surprising, really.  She bested Sébastien three matches to two and carved out a path for herself as a career soldier.

Warm and sunny patrols, easy to set aside worry.  Fields of roses, tulips, and grapes as far as the eye could see once they made their way out of the central city and across the channel.  Wineries known throughout Teyvat for their champagne; rivaled only by Mondstadt’s own Dawn Winery.

Fatui presence throughout Fontaine wasn’t uncommon; the two regions were close and who better to partner with than the nation best known for its technology?

Who better to help solve the energy crisis?  Perhaps then, people didn’t have to toil away in the very factories that created the pollution the rich and noble hated so much despite being the ones to own said factories, to buy the very goods being produced.  

The divide was already so sharp, so well-defined…

And yet the lines of Justice continued to blur.

CHARACTER STORY III

There were three ways to raise oneself out of the Lower Rings of Fontaine.

The hardest was penny-pinching and toiling youth away.  Her parents took that route, rose from the sweatshops of the greatest ateliers and created their own shop in the Middle Rings, just in the area the rich would deign enter.  Always lost in their own bubbles of gossip and intrigue, never a care for the world around them other than the latest invention, the latest arrival, the latest Judgment.

The second way was to be granted a Vision.  Karina received hers after inserting herself between a corrupt soldier and a child stealing bread; Rhiannon was gifted a few laters later, when the bond between sisters changed irrevocably.  Two daughters, both Gifted.  Business never stopped booming for their parents, known for their attention to detail.  Karina wishes she’d been around more.  The burden fell to her parents and her sister more than her; she was too busy training, advancing her career, and focused on the third method of social climbing.

The third was to be born into Fontaine’s nobility, marry into it, or enter through deeds of valor and glory.  Had Karina not received a Vision, she was already on this track, theoretically.  At least, for a time.  Marriage was the easiest, Rhiannon reminded her; but marriage carried the highest cost, Karina would rebuke.

If only that remained true.

CHARACTER STORY IV

Transitions of power were never smooth.  Externally, perhaps, but internally, a nightmare.  

It never made sense.  Naphula was supposedly no longer capable of holding up the Heavenly Principle, replaced by Focalors.  Rumors swirled about the previous Inquisitor being given Celestial support to overthrow and replace her Archon.  The Lochfolk, once responsible for keeping Fontaine’s waters sweet and pristine and safe, shrieked assassination and fled in revolt, refusing to acknowledge Focalors.

Smaller towns suffered, those too stubborn to acknowledge a new authority bribed with extra supplies, extra patrols, infrastructure.

For a time, the scales were balanced.  Karina’s workload as a lieutenant eased just enough for her to breathe.

Soon enough, Court became a game.  The illusions and manipulations of the Court trickled down into everyday life.  A forcefield hid the pollution, hid the damage to the beautiful limestone architecture and marble sculptures.  The Tower of Light never dimmed, especially when the shadow of Celestia shifted closer.

Illusions and lies worked on those in the Center and Middle Rings, those content and happy with their position.  But the Lower Rings and the countryside suffered.  Water turned to sludge, flowers died, grass became dry and brittle.  In homes so removed from the eyes of the divine that no one cared whether they lived or died, Shrines to Naberius were hidden away, the Old God worshiped over the New.

Slowly, missing persons reports rolled in.  Mostly children, although the odd soldier was known to show up occasionally.  Karina dug despite the warning from her commanding officer, from those above him.  She presented evidence, was given the go-ahead.

Her conclusion was wrong and it cost her squadron their lives.

CHARACTER STORY V

They did not worship Naberius, but the Tsaritsa.

Faith in the god of love that held no love for them.

A village without the laughter of children, bargained off to have one less mouth to feed.  A village so quiet, it made her sick.

In hindsight, a red herring.  She should have known better.

But she swallowed the acid rising from her stomach at the stench of blood and death and confronted the Second Harbinger.   After the slam of a Skirmisher’s hammer, ending the battle when Dottore grew bored, she awoke in a prison cell still wearing her blood-soaked clothes.

Already Sentenced.  Left to rot.

Her commander fought for a life sentence, rather than execution.  But she could tell by the glint in his eyes that he wanted her in prison, alive, so he knew where she was at all times.  Focalor allowed her to keep her Vision, for even she was not one to play with the Divine so loosely, and therefore prison was a better place for her.

But before the Decision and Judgment could be carried out, the Ninth Harbinger arrived, bearing a letter from the Tsaritsa Herself.  The Fatui had suffered damages, the Second now facing a set-back in his research, and they were owed their dues.

The letter failed to mention that Karina’s very family had gone to Northland in order to borrow what they could, in hopes of paying bail.  They couldn’t lose a child.

CHARACTER STORY VI

And so, she was released in exchange for goods and resources only Fontaine could provide, stripped of her rank with an honorable discharge.

Her Vision was still bright, back then.

But her family paid the price.  Clients wouldn’t come in if Karina was in the store.  Errands became harder when no one wanted to sell goods to a supposed traitor who cost her fellow soldiers their lives.

Her Commander remained her Lover, although that too, was strained.  She let herself be fooled by the remaining shreds of hope that perhaps all was not lost.

By then, her parents pinned all hopes on her sister, who took the safer route.  The younger learned the business, set aside her dreams in favor of understanding how to manage client expectations with the cost of goods.

The Tsaritsa’s benevolence came at a price, one Karina’s parents neglected to tell her, thinking perhaps that it would never be collected.

Her service to the Harbingers in exchange for her release, to be called upon whenever the Fatui so chose.  The original deal between the Ninth and her parents, one that took her into consideration only as a resource, a contract that was not hers to uphold but one she must abide by.

When they did come to the door, her answer was a resounding ‘No.’  She would not be defiled by Delusions, become another cog in a machine; she was tired of that now.  She would not be so foolish again.

The Agents left.  But when Karina took her leave to run what errands she could with business owners who didn’t mind her presence, she returned to an open front door and a tossed sitting room.

Blood.  So much blood.

The smell of molten metal, charred flesh, masking the underlying Mist Grass.

Her parents were gone first.  They put up a fight, as best they could as non-allogenes.

A sound startled her as she stared into lifeless eyes.  Rhiannon, her sister, struggling to move, still alive.  Someone took their time with her, Karina realized, and forced their parents to watch.  She cradled the younger one carefully, pushed the hair out of her eyes, and held her until a final wet and shuddering breath fell from her lips.

With her sister, went her Vision, the vibrant purple fading like a lantern without oil to burn.

Karina was pulled away from the scene too quickly, too fiercely.  Once again, her Commander present, whispering falsehoods in her ear to soothe her.

She left as soon as she could, as soon as arrangements were made and when she could no longer stand being treated as if she was broken.

Her Vision remains to this day at her hip, a mark of her guilt, a reminder to never fail again.
