Witness statement: Off the 395 hw in California between Reno and Oregon border. Was driving along and saw this bright ass light. Pulled over cause i was like wtf. And then another one appeared super dim. The bright one went dim and disappeared and the other got bright. Lasted a few minutes of me tripping on the side of the road then that one just faded away. Kept driving on alert at that point. Then 20 min down the road i shit you not it appeared again. Same thing. One was bright and the other was dim then they switched and the dim faded away. I was tripping. Id back my car up and drive forward make sure it was really there or not disappearing behind a hill or cloud or something. Had legit chills. It was like tracking me. Sunday Combat Sports Catch-Up

I was at a family get together yesterday and was in and out the fights. I missed most of the UFC card and big parts of the boxing cards. I’ve caught up on them this morning and just going to drop some thoughts on the ones I watched.

Claressa Shields UD over Savannah Marshall - Undisputed! Again! Shields takes a clear as day decision over Marshall in the UK. A tremendous fight and a 2nd women’s bout that will wind up on Fight of the Year list when 2022 is up. One of the crazier paced fights you are going to see this year. 340+ punches from both women over the course of 20 minutes with both going shoulder to shoulder for basically the whole fight. Was surprised that Shields decided she wanted to let Marshall come to her, but I think the idea was to reposition as Marshall came in behind that honestly not flick jab and avoid letting her angle off for those big KO shots like she likes to do. Marshall, for her part, did well when she could force tie ups with Shields. She’s a solid pocket fighter. But when she gave Shields space, Shields was able to really uncork those big shots and combos that had her up 40 power shots after the fight was over. An amazing fight. Go watch it if you missed it. I wouldn’t be averse to a third, but I think Shields has commitments to PFL. Hopefully fighters like Marshall, Raquel Miller, and Shadasia Green are able to get televised fights so they can get some hype for potential fights with Shields.

Alycia Baumgardner SD over Mikaela Mayer - New unified super featherweight champ! A solid fight that never really got out of first gear. It seemed early that the speed of Baumgardner was really troubling Mayer as she struggled to get a beat on when to throw as Alycia threatened with the body jab and dipped out of range. Once Mayer decided she was just going to throw the 1-2 though, she was immediately in the fight. Baumgardner was content to be on the outside and try to time Mayer coming in. She added more lateral movement after a couple of strong Mayer rounds that seemed to make Mayer more selective again. Definitely could have used both women extending the exchanges more. More throw away punches, feinting mid combo to try to get the other woman to open up. I know people were stressed on the scoring but this is one I thought could have been 6-4 either way and neither would have the right to complain. Happy for Baumgardner. She wasn’t supposed to be here. First time this fight got made, Nevada commission nixed it cause it “wasn’t fair for Baumgardner”. Baumgardner doesn’t even have a promoter behind her compared to the hyped Olympian Mayer. Then Alycia gets flown to the UK to be a walkover for Terri Harper en route to unification but gets the upset and Matchroom is forced to sign her. Now she gets the Mayer fight and wins a 50/50 fight. Really cool to see. She wants the WBA champ Hyun Mi Choi in a bid for undisputed. Hopefully they can make it happen. 

Deontay Wilder KOs Robert Helenius in 1st - I mean, yeah. Helenius is a fine HW but he’s the type of guy who was going to throw himself into Wilder’s right hand. And that’s what happened. Seeing people get gassed up for this KO is weird. We know Wilder can still punch. This tells us nothing about how he handles Usyk, like I’ve seen some claim. 

Caleb Plant KOs Anthony Dirrell in 9th - Plant by KO was a shocker but the outclassing he was putting on before hand wasn’t. Not a whole bunch to say other than I like Plant. Hopefully he can fight David Benavidez next and we can have a clear next challenger for Canelo at 168.

Devin Haney UD over George Kambosos - We didn’t need all this. We all saw the first one. Get Haney up to 140.

UFC (Main Card)

Alonzo Menifield KOs Misha Cirkunov in 1st - this was the only way this fight was going to go. Cirk just cannot eat a punch, especially not from these big bombers up at 205. But he’s too big to make 185 and still be a good wrestler. Sucks. Also, I’m firing my agent if I’m him. Dude should be angling for other grapplers at LHW and they keep getting him guys like Walker and Menifield.

Raphael Assuncao UD over Victor Henry - Thank you Raphael! Assuncao, the most disrespected fighter in the UFC and one of the best BWs in the history of the division. Man’s resume is impeccable. I really thought Henry would overwhelm him and just take him out the fight early. Turns out that Assuncao is still a fantastic counter puncher and if you give him a guy that throws a lot of empty volume and leg kicks, he’ll be able to catch those kicks and counter hard. Had Henry walking onto huge shots. At one point, he caught a leg kick ran Henry back with three right hands and then hit a double leg on the opposite fence. Amazing sequence, amazing performance. Henry just isn’t Dillashaw or Sandhagen. He wasn’t really giving Assuncao different looks to think about and overload him. Great stuff.

Dusko Todorovic stops Jordan Wright in 2nd - Defense isn’t real. Wright spent the first round beating the crap out of Todorovic as he chased leg locks. Todorovic came back in the 2nd with big power shots on a tired Wright and beat on him til he got on top and dropped bombs on him 3 minutes into the round. The most heavyweight middleweight fight we’ve had in a while.

Jonathan Martinez KOs Cub Swanson via leg kick in 2nd - So Swanson looked fine for about 4 minutes and 40. Slower than usual, but that was expected as he was moving down a division. He was losing as Martinez’s kicks were finding a home repeated, but he looked himself. Then Martinez hit him with a knee that sent him down. He recovered but got hurt along the fence again right before the bell rang. He looked steady in the 2nd round but as soon as Martinez got going and applied pressure and volume he got Swanson down again. Then he eats three or four clean inside leg kicks and it’s over. These are not the type of fights a 38 year old Swanson should be taking. Especially down at 135lbs. Just go do some fun ones for some decent checks and ride off Cub.

Alexa Grasso UD over Viviane Araujo - This fight kind of reminded me of the Baumgardner-Mayer fight. Lots of having the same exchange over and over again with the one taking initiative having more success. Grasso’s movement doesn’t really build into her offense a whole lot. She’d probably do better as a come forward boxer than as a lateral moving, back to the cage boxer. But she has cleaner technique than Araujo, which is what carried her here. The more concise striking beating out Araujo’s unstructured boxing.
