Imagine we get a new season of Hetalia where we finally get to see Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Wales all animated. As well as an English dub.

In the English dub, the characters sound more or less like you think they would, with accents associated with each country. Ireland and Northern Ireland speak with heavy Irish accents. Wales speaks with a type of Welsh accent.

And then Scotland just sounds exactly like Scrooge McDuck. Quack and all.

My hot take: I cannot stand cartoonishly evil America.

When there’s nothing of value to him/her as a character outside of being a dick in hiding or something just gets at me because that’s it?? There’s nothing else? Seriously? And maybe I’m still shell shocked from Countryhumans and any depiction of America as a empty husk of narcissism and ignorance just gives me war flashbacks but I can never fully enjoy an America (or any hetalia character) which feels flat and one dimensional.

And on the flip side of that I dislike silly goody two shoes America as well, and I think it’s for the same reasons most people who depict America as vapid and violent do—were talking about the United States of America!! This is why I’m so far removed from canon America as possible because I cannot suspend my disbelief that the representative of the US is a mindless golden retriever with not a bad bone in the body, that’s just not possible to me.

Now personally; America is best written morally grey. I wouldn’t call America a good person by any means, however I don’t see America as one who’s deeply hateful and wants to ruin the world just because. In the simplest terms, I think America wants what America believes is best but the methods America uses to reach this best is very…America. I don’t think America is normally seeking to use and hurt others, most often than not it’s a consequence of actions or something America will try to justify or defend. America is not great but America isn’t purposely evil.

Ending note: if this post comes off as me trying to defend or dilute the actions of the United States. I am not. This is less of me talking about the US and more so talking about America as a character. I personally do not see America to be a 1 to 1 representation of the US and the government (though I know some do) and this can go for hetalia as a whole. No nation to me is just their country in human form and I try not to depict them as my exact thoughts and opinions on a nation.
