i think it’s funny to think some modern day historian would be going through a nation’s old recovered journals and just being so flabbergasted yet invested about every inkling of their lives. the stages of grief and joy the historian would go through as they recite the tales of a nation’s hardships in youth to their first love to their drama and to the utter humanity in their words.
prussia’s journal and diary meme in this fandom is really funny bc he’d be SUCH a good example of the previous statements. modern historians being like “oh shit he was bisexual as fuck” as he gushes over both hungary and austria in his diary and then flip the page to a heart wrenching journal entry about the casualties of war or the detailing of his issues with finding his place in a turbulent, ever-changing world.
i personally believe that the historian who would have recovered his journals would forever be changed by the kind of stories he tells in his diaries. lord knows i’d be.

i think this has only just occured to me because i've spent the last 5 hours going thru pics from my Denmark trip back in summer but imagine Den taking the other nations to Tivoli Gardens (a sort of theme park right in the centre of Copenhagen) to wind down after a conference he's been hosting lmao
#hetalia#hws denmark#i have fond memories from Tivoli#we got off the train immediately from the airport and Tivoli is opposite the train station#and we didn't know until we went inside what it was :')#that was the day i conquered my fear of 'adult' coasters and went of The Demon which was actually incredible#the mine train was so fun.. thru the lil mountain..#you just know who's taking it easy on the dragon boats in the lake and who's queueing for the adrenaline stuff#i'd like to think Den could convince the gov to let him have Tivoli to himself (and the others) but also imagine#the interactions the nations coukd end up having with humans just trying to have a good time haha

Parasitic relationships, check. Suicidal empathy in families, check. The disintegration of societies and countries, check. It’s like a recipe for disaster, really. # [me from former socialist Yugoslavia: bro do you really thing communism is the only answer anyone can accept?] # I don't hate american communists in theory # it's in the 'family' of political stances where I can mostly assume people have good intentions # but some of them... do not want to address historical horrors caused by that system
companies really have got to be okay with stagnant profits. what is wrong with earning the same amount every year? why does it always have to be more? it’s not sustainable. there are only so many people on the planet you can profit from 😭
#capitalism#midcentury#the gilded age#stakeholder capitalism#the new robber barons#not getting involved in pro or anti communism debate#except to say the usa today has more in common with the ussr in 1989 than the usa in 1969#and the boomer economy was a blip between the horrors of the great depression and the horrors of today#but we can build that again#okay one bit about communism i think the ideology itself is sound but also deeply idealisitic about human nature#and a lot of erstwhile communists are essentially just left libertarians who seem deeply naive about how easy it is to corrupt a govt#but tbh this is true of any govt capitalist communist mercantile or otherwise#democracy is also a good idea that trump has proven depends deeply on everyone playing by the rules#and even so we had to fight a whole civil war already and a lot of ppl never got over that#bc america is super racist#so is europe!#5+8$#this is why dem socialism breaks down as soon as the canadian govt interacts w first nations or any european govt sees a boat of refugees#and you end up as australia smugly lecturing americans about civic investment or etc ehile literally building a giant catapult for migrants#anywuas good thing climate change usnt real and we arent about to face mass human migration and resource wars

so I can't actually look at your taskmaster posts straight on bc it's like looking at some sort of like higher being and I'm simply not strong enough. But I still want to ask you about it bc I really like TM!
Do you have a favorite season? A favorite contestant? Do you have thoughts on Liza Tarbuck's final task?
asdfa;j;kl anon i'm so sorry for the unhinged tweets but this is so funny to me. how do you watch the show. liza literally said alex had "a greedy bottom" on air & i HAVE to assume alex enjoyed this because it aired! on the television show which alex executively produces! god fucking bless.
also THE TASK was to "tell the taskmaster you love him in the most meaningful way" and at no point did anyone feel the need to pause & explain why having alex sit on a cake would be meaningful to greg, presumably because every single episode prior to this one had already made it perfectly clear.
there are such delightful moments in basically every series and if i talked about them all we would genuinely be here all day but here's some quick standouts:
series 5
the songs about rosalind were SUCH bangers? mark & nish's in particular was a triumph, loved when they revealed their musical talents. overall greg's dynamic with nish was SO funny. i really enjoy when they have secret contestant-specific tasks & want every single cheeky text revealed. sally is also... so hot, my god. nail that watercooler.
series 7
everyone had such a good dynamic, greg had a fantastic time, rhod tried to strip alex every episode, just chaotic as hell. james absolutely breaking in studio, phil leaning into the dick, everyone was game for anything & it really gelled wonderfully. sidebar the nearly-nude picture of greg is GREAT, i won't let anyone say anything otherwise.
series 15
"this is a show about pedantry" frankie is so correct and his delivery is impeccable, he made me cry-laugh so many times. ivo is a hopeful puppy and i loved it every time anyone suggested he needed a refund from eton. mae is obviously the hottest of them all but kiell subbing in for coc was also a delight. a lovely cast.
series 16
how are the sues so adorable???? i love that they became bffs immediately. also susan is the CUTEST, her outfits were incredible, and rada was obviously worth all thirty grand from the way she mimed every idiom to perfection. julian's dynamic with alex, also unmatched. genuinely the unhinged energy in this one was off the charts.
#some kind of human interaction#i started the back catalog at s4 so going back to see the early dynamics has been SO fascinating#just a dude about to embark on a journey of self-discovery; and also alex#he claims he's only there to be eye-candy and admin in series TWO#like congratulations on training your perfect top#did you have to drag the whole nation along though#a completely normal television show

Ok I'm thinking about kabuto backstory again and thinking about how unfair and fucked up it all is like
> be Danzo
> threaten local orphanage mother into returning to being a spy (by threatening the kids there)
> force them to send One Kid too because he "lost a man" while obtaining the intel he's threatening her to spy over (the kid is Kabuto, who volunteered bc he overheard them threatening the mother over this) (Danzo knows he overheard)
> train kabuto to be a spy while orphanage mother is off on her long spy job as well
> bait spy mom with the promise of keeping kabuto safe to keep her agreeing to work with you
> decide they both are too good at their jobs (????) Of being spies (that work for you?????)(they've been loyal this whole time????) So they're too dangerous and both need to die
> keep mom and kid away from each other as kid grows up
> literally DOCTOR FAKE PHOTOS of the kid growing up to make it seem like he looks totally different now???? So she won't recognize him?????
> give her the assassination assignment of killing the Real Kabuto (who she won't recognize) so they'll kill each other
> whoops, Kabuto survived and killed her instead, oh well at least Orochimaru's watching him now
I'm just like. How fucked up is it to threaten these people into working as spies for you "for the good of Konoha", and then decide that these people (who have given NO INDICATION of intending to betray Konoha) are too good at being spies and thus Too Dangerous and should be killed for it. But no he can't just kill them in a normal way. He had to manufacture an entire scenario so that they'd kill EACH OTHER while making the mom not recognize him (with the express purpose of breaking the kid's spirit) like BROOOOOO I know you ordered the whole Uchiha clan to be massacred (conducting genocide for the sake of 'peace') actually now that I think about it he ordered this of itachi. Ordered him to kill his own family. Of course Danzo would get off on making a mother and son kill each other "for the good of Konoha" he's almost fucking cartoon villain level of horrible past the point of logic EXCEPT there really are people this awful that have existed. Plenty of them. And they have also justified it as being "for the good of [nation]" like that's the Thing, he's a war hungry nationalist that has decided He Knows Best so he's going to fuck up SO many people's lives, up to and including his own damn citizens!!!! And this bitch thinks he deserves to be kage?!?!?! Fucking Hiruzen letting him run wild like this. He knew Danzo was stealing children and indoctrinating them into a murder cult (where, keep in mind, he purposefully raises kids in pairs so they view each other as family AND THEN ORDERS THEM TO KILL EACH OTHER)(AGAIN!!!! with the family killing, what is his PROBLEM) but Hiruzen just let it fucking happen. Spineless fucking piece of shit. He fucked Naruto up he fucked Orochimaru up he fucked up Royally with Danzo like come ONNNNNNNNNN
Rattling the bars of my cage rn at how awful Danzo is and how he was able to just. DO THIS???? I know the bitch is dead but he's not dead enough. Give me the glock.
#speculation nation#fanny watches naruto#sorry im just losing my mind over this. this changes EVERYTHING with kabuto#and you know i already hated danzo so much. but i just now realized his fucking obsession with making family members kill each other#it's probably for the sake of 'killing their emotions' which he sees as necessary to become a good ninja (*cough* a good tool for the state)#im kicking danzo's head in as we speak. the skull. or whatever was left after he exploded. probably nothing much actually.#it's not good enough I NEED TO KILL HIM SO BADDDDD HE NEEDS TO BE DOUBLE DEAD TRIPLE DEAD#QUADRUPLE OR PERHAPS EVEN INFINITY DEAD.#sets up an infinite time loop of me killing Danzo just to make sure hes super super super super dead#YELLING SCREAMING I HATE DANZO SO MUCHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!#honestly as much as i loved sasuke killing danzo i wish itd happened later.#bc danzo's stinky fingers were in so many pies. he was set up as this horrible mastermind#and then he dies... what... 2/5ths into shippuden?? and what do we have now. cringefail sadboy decided to kill the world for his fantasies?#weird alien goddess?? bc all the world's struggles were clearly bc of an alien instead of any human fault???? or something?????#idk i havent gotten that far yet. but thats what ive gathered from online.#for as wonderful of characters as kishimoto writes he really isnt that great at overall plot.#compelling world. fascinating interactions. cool fights and mechanics.#unfortunately he set up a guy to be a big bad and he died before even halfway through and now we have to watch several hundred episodes#of the most Ninjas One Upping Each Other In Make Believe plotlines ever#like the 'i hit you' 'well i have a shield that blocks hits' 'well i hit you with a sword that cuts through anything'#'well i cast a spell before you hit me that makes me invulnerable to attacks' etc etc COME ON MAN it gets so BORING.#i miss the good old days of sakura fighting sasori. now shes sidelined to the medic tents bc shes a poor vulnerable medic or w/e#idk some parts of this is cool. but so much of it is unsatisfying. like the bijuu battle??? come on.#naruto making friends with kurama was great. the fight with all the jinchuuriki was pretty boring.#like come on this is supposed to be a Big Deal. aaaand what do we have now? another fucking bijuu bomb.#oh wait theyre all casting the bijuu bomb together!!! no worries naruto is making a bijuu bomb of the same exact size#so they counteract and shoot into the stratosphere and theres a Big Boom! wow! so original!#yawn. yawn especially at the madara vs kages fight. at least im enjoying the uchiha bros vs kabuto fight.

Today I visited the National Justice Museum in Nottingham, with a group of friends.
I find myself reflecting on the difference between museums and the internet.
Because the internet promises endless riches - so much history and information. What are the advantages of museums? Buildings with a relatively tiny amount of information, that require clothes and travel and negotiation with other people.
Well.
The highlight of the visit was a pair of performances. First, we watched an actor play the part of an executioner. He talked us through the history of hanging, and then introduced us to a woman sentenced to death - a second performer. Plenty of history to be learned - but also a lot of fun to be had from the interaction between the performers and the audience. Little semi-scripted moments, with the performers clearly enjoying the process of selecting audience members for the various jokes along the way. On top of this, the crowd was encouraged to boo and jeer the condemned woman.
The other performance was even more interactive. A reenactment of a trial, specific visitors were selected to play specific characters in the scene, alongside three actors (who'd all played roles in the execution scene as well). The audience roles were reasonably foolproof - but with plenty of scope to shine for those who wanted to throw themselves into the experience.
And this is the thrill of a museum. It's the fact that you're there with other people. The presence of others enhances the experience. The performances were made so much better by the strangers who happened to visit the museum on the same day we did.
And that's true even when it's less obvious. Queuing at the cafe - walking around the exhibits - shopping at the gift shop. Humans are social by nature.
And I wonder. When we watch a YouTube video, is this why we're so keen to read the comments? Is it why, when I watch a new TV show, I'm desperate to talk to other people about it?
The internet lets us curate our lived experience to perfect precision. We needn't be bothered by anyone else getting in the way with their inconvenient humanity.
Museums recognise that humanity's the whole point.
Trials and executions. We love courtroom dramas. Public executions used to attract crowds of thousands. I think we find this ghoulish. But deep down, I think it's that we all crave shared experiences.

little random but i really appreciate your dissections and analysis of Mel mainly bc the fandom either adore her and won't admit she is a flawed character and get over defensive when you call her out, or straight up hate her and make her out to be completely evil.
Mel is written as morally grey for a reason and when ppl try to act like she was morally correct in everything she did, it goes against the whole plot. yes, she regrets most of her actions by the end of the series and is left to deal with her family's leagacy and the weight of her actions, but that doesn't undo anything she did. and her eventually starting to care about Jayce doesn't just cancel out that she manipulated him (you'd think this would be obvious)
what bothers me the most i think is meljay shippers who say Jayce mistreated her and that Mel only ever helped and care about him and aided him in rising to power politically, and how she was so understanding of Jayce's and Viktor's friendship. yes, encouraging methods of political corruption in order to gain more power is so caring and kind of her! ❤️
Mel might've told Jayce to go spend time with Viktor after finding out he was ill, but the one time in the show she interacted with Viktor was... prejudiced to say the least. she never directly spoke to or answered Viktor, and the expression on her face any time she looked over at Viktor was so clearly full of dislike. it shocks me ppl still believe Mel and Viktor could get along and respect one another, especially romantically. no way.
anyways, sorry for the rant. just tired of how many bad takes there are in this fandom and very fond of your account lol
you are right and you SHOULD say it re: that oft repeated argument about her "only wanting what's best for him" bothers me so much. Its just... weirdly patronizing and spousing pro-piltover nationalism every time i see it being brought up. "She's doing what anyone would do/what is best for the city!" IDK MAN I AM NOT ROCKING WITH THAT. Im not an ubercapitalist. I don't think any of that was the good option actually lol. Probably I hate piltover too much to humor these arguments but from day 1 we are shown this is a city of immense class inequality in which the elite few holds all the power and all the profit gains at the cost of everyone else's submission and humanity. (Not for nothing: these are also the classic old guard Noxian tenets of supremacy. That's how they do colonization.)
The interactions Mel has with Jayce for majority of the series, before she watches that bomb come in and has her rapid onset change of heart, are her talking about how investors want his work and how she can use his discovery to advance this city (which is already built on exploitation!) or instigating his rise to power as a new ringleader for the council's rigged mercantile operations, and this is just not good or heroic in any way to me. This isn't love either, it's industrial convenience. The fact that she's conflicted by the end doesn't cancel these actions out! Jayce realizes that he's been used in ways he strongly disagrees with and any the affection in that dynamic vanishes instantly. The time he spends in isolation replaying his mistakes in that cave has an emphasis on mel/heimerdinger's voice on the council too, all of his regrets with blindly following someone else's vision or disappointing an idol he held in high regards.
And Jayce DOES care about the state of the cities, or he did before the writers forgot: He's the one who pleads for Zaun's independence at the end of season 1! He's the one who spent all his life trying to work towards improving the lives of common people, giving them the miracles they've been denied!
Viktor is a fucking nobody. He is extremely worthless in the eyes of the piltovan upper crust, only kept around on the merits working with Jayce have afforded him; and they still don't care. They're probably hoping he dies quicker. We *SEE* him being singled out and alienated during that weapons discussion where Mel is pleading for Jayce to think about "protecting his people" (only piltovans, never, ever zaunites- protecting piltovans against the zaunite menace.) and Viktor is set off at that whole exchange because it doesn't matter how loud he screams, these people can just tune him off and pretend he doesn't exist anyway. It's what they're used to doing. It drives me insane!!!!! His indignation is extremely under-explored and very inline with his act1 speech of feeling like an undesirable presence in piltover and having to push through with the grit of his teeth. It's open faced classism and I still see people pretending it didn't happen. Fandom makes all of these characters FAR less interesting by defanging them. The heart is in the friction and in the ugliness of them fucking up because they have very, very different conceptions of "utopia" - and some of those utopias require the death of the other characters present.
A lot of the Arcane character arcs have to do with realizing the above, and weighing if the sacrifice is worth the risk. Sometimes it turns out their utopias were shit.
