Our 2023 garden: last seed starts!
First, something pretty! There are quite a few crocus buds popping up, and we’re also seeing lots of grape hyacinth greens emerging! Too early for the flower stalks to start forming, but the leaves come up in distinct little clusters that are easy to identify, compared to the grass and weeds that are in the same area. I’m looking forward to when the crocuses and hyacinths spread enough to start…

Styrian Pumpkin seeds are coming back in stock soon. This is an Austrian heirloom that is special because of its imminently snackable hulless green seeds. Cacia Huff at Feral Farm is producing this one for us - and she sent down a few whole pumpkins so we could take photos. Very rewarding to work with these two pumpkins. extracted the seed, snacked on some raw right out of the fruit, and roasted some of the flesh- it’s pretty mild flavored, with a texture reminiscent of spaghetti squash - a little salt and olive oil really bring things out.

Pepitas and sunflower seeds are two types of edible seeds that offer distinct flavors and nutritional benefits. Pepitas, also known as pumpkin seeds, are small and green with a mild, nutty taste. They're often enjoyed roasted and salted as a snack or used as a topping for salads, soups, and dishes like Mexican mole. Sunflower seeds, on the other hand, are larger and typically come in a white or black shell. They have a slightly richer flavor and are commonly eaten as a snack or used in baking, trail mixes, and as toppings for various dishes. Both seeds are packed with healthy fats, protein, and essential nutrients, but the choice between pepitas and sunflower seeds depends on your preference for taste, size, and their intended culinary use. When it comes to snacking or adding crunch to meals, seeds are a popular option. Two of the most commonly used seeds are Pepitas and Sunflower Seeds. Though they may look similar, there are notable differences between the two, from their taste and nutritional value to their culinary uses and health benefits. Key Takeaways: Pepitas and Sunflower Seeds have distinct taste profiles and nutritional compositions. Pepitas are a type of pumpkin seed, while Sunflower Seeds come from the Sunflower plant. Pepitas are often used in Mexican and Latin American cuisine, while Sunflower Seeds can be found in a variety of dishes and snacks. Both seeds offer a range of health benefits, from boosting heart health to supporting the immune system. When choosing between Pepitas and Sunflower Seeds, it's important to consider personal preferences and dietary needs. What are Pepitas? Pepitas are a type of seed that come from specific types of pumpkins. These seeds originated in Mexico and have been used as a food source for thousands of years. Pepitas are different from other pumpkin seeds in that they do not have a hard outer shell. Instead, they are a soft, greenish color and have a nutty, slightly sweet taste. Pepitas are often used in a variety of dishes, including salads, soups, and baked goods. They can also be eaten alone as a snack or used as a garnish. Some people even roast them for added flavor. Due to their nutritional content, pepitas are often considered a healthy addition to one's diet. They are high in protein, fiber, healthy fats, and several vitamins and minerals. What are Sunflower Seeds? Sunflower seeds are the edible seeds of the sunflower plant, scientifically known as Helianthus annuus. Originally grown in North America, these seeds are now widely cultivated around the world for their nutritional value and culinary uses. Sunflower seeds come in two main varieties: the striped or black and white seeds, which have a thicker shell, and the all-white seeds, which are sometimes referred to as “no-shell” or “hulless” seeds. The taste of sunflower seeds is mild and nutty, with a slightly sweet flavor. They are often roasted and salted for a crunchy snack or used in a variety of dishes, including salads, baked goods, and trail mixes. Sunflower seeds are also a popular ingredient in plant-based milks, butters, and cheeses. Taste Comparison When it comes to taste, Pepitas and Sunflower Seeds are quite different. Pepitas have a nutty and slightly sweet flavor, with a softer texture compared to Sunflower Seeds. Their delicate taste makes them a great addition to both sweet and savory dishes, adding a unique flavor and texture. Sunflower Seeds, on the other hand, have a more distinct and slightly bitter taste. They have a crunchy texture and are commonly enjoyed roasted or salted as a snack. Their stronger flavor makes them a great addition to salads, trail mixes, and granolas. Your personal taste preference will determine which seed you prefer. If you enjoy a softer and sweeter taste, Pepitas may be the better choice, while those who prefer a crunchier texture and stronger flavor may prefer Sunflower Seeds. Pumpkin Pepitas was selected in 2016 as an AAS National winner. AAS - All-America Selections is the oldest, independent impartial plant assessment organization in North America.
Pepitas' refers to the hulless naked seeds, they do not have the tough outer shell we are accustomed to in our traditional pumpkins. This 'naked' seed makes them easier to eat after roasting. They are grown primarily for their green hulless seeds which can eaten fresh or roasted.

A pumpkin seed, also known as a pepita, is the edible seed of a pumpkin or certain other cultivars of squash. The seeds are typically rather flat and asymmetrically oval, and light green in color and may have a white outer hull. Some cultivars are hulless, and are grown only for their seed. . Hulless seed pumpkins, and treating the deer?
Check out this handsome lady I found in the trail cam files this morning! The critters much prefer the paths humans have cleared, including the trailed packed down by snow mobile-ers! This piebald seems to be the only deer that is visiting us regularly this winter, even though we’ve stopped putting food out this year, to raid our compost pile. Yesterday, I decided it was time to crack open some…

Our 2022 garden: harvesting squash and corn
Well, the last of the stuff that needed to come in before tonight is done – at least as much as possible. The girls and I put bottles with warm water under the eggplants in the grow bag (the only ones fruiting) and, since they were right there, with the sweet potatoes, too. The eggplant and one grow bag with sweet potato got covered, but the sheet wasn’t big enough to cover the other two grow…

Our 2022 garden: deer damage and harvested squash
When doing my rounds, one of the things I’ve been making sure to check is for damage to the berry bushes we plants. Especially that one highbush cranberry that has been eaten, twice. Putting the old saw horse over it seems to be helping, and there are even the tiniest of green leaves appearing again. We’ve had a pretty constant and gentle rain since yesterday evening, so that is sure to be…

Our 2022 garden: some progress, and a little harvest
It’s just past 10pm as I start this, and we’re still at 21C/70F, and the higher winds of earlier today have died down to a lovely calm. I found myself looking for reasons to get the fire going, but I really need to get some sleep tonight! Sleep has been frequently interrupted for the past while. 😕 Lack of sleep wiped me out enough that I was feeling quite ill this morning, to the girls took care…
