Lucious Route Chapter 4 (6-10)

Last time on the Lucious route, Liz and Lucious rolled a collective 6 on their stealth check, but Hugo rolled a natural 1 so he didn’t notice them following him, Hugo does a lot of expository monologues for literally no one other than the audience, Remy shows up in the form of Taffy, and I finally snap due to the insanity of Lucious’s outfit. Not necessarily in that order.

So Lucious calls Liz “too nice” and tells her to go back to Alfonse and Caesar because what is a Wizardess Heart route without a man patronizing Liz. Liz refuses because fuck you Lucious.

My points still stands.

So then Hugo finally notices these really unstealthy people. He calls Liz the Goddess of Time and states that his job is to protect her and free Lucious, but not today. He warns them against getting in his way if they want to get what they want. Or maybe that was only directed at Lucious, the wording wasn’t super clear.

Lucious briefly morphs into Peter Griffin, and the disembodied voice of Hugo informs them that their free trial of the pocket of time they’re in is about to expire.

So Liz and Lucious escape the collapsing time dimension and Liz recounts what she knows about Hugo, which is essentially just his cameos in the other routes, and can’t pin down his motivations, which I guess means she hasn’t been listening to his monologues because he literally already spelled out his motivations last week.

Lucious tells Liz he’s looking forward to being free and asks her to be his guide to the new world, and

I cannot believe the dichotomy of these two options. I literally can’t believe this is a choice. Just fuckin “find someone else.” What even happens if you say that???

This is what happens if you pick the right option, but if you pick the “find someone else” option Liz herself points out that she may not be the best option in an objective way, not a self-deprecating way, so ironically “find someone else” is the LESS caustic option.

And then Liz is somewhat turned on by Lucious just fucking shouting about Hugo at the air. Liz realizes they’re still Holding Hands but then serendipitously sees Claudia’s portrait in the background.

I've come back to drop some Next Gen Nevermore lore, this time about Sora and Regine's parents 💕

Yukiko Toriyama

Because of my love for parallels, she's a doctor to match the adult characters in the show (Principal - Weems/Bianca; Sheriff - Galpin/Walker). She's a surgeon though, not a therapist like Kinbott, but still a doctor!

Yukiko's around Wednesday and co's age, so she was also in Jericho High when they were in Nevermore. She has a huge respect for Outcasts, thinking that they are very cool. In fact, she thought this one siren girl that she first saw during Outreach Day was especially cool. Soon she will find out that her name is Bianca Barclay and that her classmate Lucas Walker will end up dating her.

She met Sora's father some time after graduating from high school. She fell for his confidence, and was especially impressed that he was an Outcast. Unfortunately she realized too late that he's all talk. When she got pregnant with Sora, his rich parents essentially sent her hush money, which she accepted and used to pay for med school. Sora's grandparents helped raise her while Yukiko finished her studies, so she wasn't as present as she probably should have been during Sora's childhood. She tries her best though, really.

Hugo Schuyler

Sora's father. He came from a rich and reputable family of psychics that specialize in spirits, also known as Herons. Because of his family's reputation, he developed a huge ego and has delusions of grandeur.

He's a glutton for attention, a trait that Sora unfortunately inherited as she also always makes an effort to fit in with "the popular crowd" among her peers. However unlike Sora who is ashamed of her outcast status and prefers to hide her power, Hugo has a superiority complex and overcompensates for his weak psychic abilities by being obnoxiously loud about his outcast status and his family's name.

He ends up starting a YouTube channel as a paranormal investigator after Nevermore. When he finds out he has a daughter, he's quick to head over to Nevermore and rope Sora into his paranormal shenanigans. No, it doesn't end up being a cute father-daughter bonding activity.

He sees both Wednesday and Enid as rivals. Wednesday for her formidable psychic powers (and reputation!), Enid for, well, her more successful YouTube channel(which isn't even hers, it's the Wolf Preserve's). Wednesday does not remember him from their high school days though, and Enid purposely mixes him up with Xavier when addressing him.

Vega hates him because he thinks aliens don't exist.

Erica Gutierrez

(I don't have her design and personality fully conceptualized yet, sorry)

Erica is Eugene's ex-wife and is a famous actress who started out when she was a teenager. She used to be a celebrity crush of Eugene's when he was in Nevermore, and dating and marrying her was a dream come true that sadly didn't last.

Erica makes an effort to see Regine when she can, and she usually has her daughter stay with her throughout the summer. Her fame comes with its own cons, particularly the excessive attention she(and by extension her family) gets hugely contributing to Regine's overly reclusive personality.

Erica had nothing to do with Outcasts before meeting Eugene and is every bit of a Normie. She and Wednesday never liked each other. She gets along well with Enid because she thinks Enid is normal enough when she isn't wolfed out. Enid likes her for getting her Michelle Yeoh's autograph and a video message as a birthday gift once. (Wednesday hates that Eugene's ex wife of all people showed her up that year)

None of the Nevermore student knew Regine's mother was a celebrity until Erica decided to give her daughter a surprise visit during Family Day(coincidentally the same day Hugo goes to meet Sora. It was a long weekend for the girls)

I wanted to talk about @pilferingapples ‘s autistic Fantine headcanon that has been brought up in the Les Mis Letters server because it has rewired my brain and the more I think about it the more I can see my own experiences as an autistic woman reflected in Fantine’s story.

Fantine is introduced as being an outsider amongst the other grisettes. I think Hugo’s intention here was to paint her as innocent and virtuous in comparison to them but the way it reads to me is that she is someone who just can’t quite connect with her peers. She is described as being dreamy and “always having a queer look about her” in the words of Favourite.

The way Fantine is treated by the other girls rings very true to me as an autistic woman in my experience with friendship. She does consider the other grisettes her friends yet they speak cruelly about her behind her back (Favourite saying she puts on airs) and to her face (Dahlia mocking her for crying over a dead horse). Yet she offers no resistance, in fact she barely seems to acknowledge these things as offensive, because that’s just what being friends is.

The friendship between the four grisettes is shown to be truly shallow when after Tholomyes’ “prank”, they all go their separate ways, with Hugo saying it was like they’d never been friends in the first place. Realistically, one of the few examples of female friendship in the brick being portrayed as shallow and catty is most likely down to some lingering misogyny on Hugo’s part but it is something I find relatable as someone who has allowed myself to be treated poorly by others because I thought that’s how friendship was supposed to be. I’m sure a lot of other autistic people can relate to this as well.

Additionally, I think it’s interesting how the other grisettes criticisms of Fantine come down to her not acting in the expected way and fitting in with group. Favourite accuses her of putting on airs because she won’t swing like the other girls (therefore let the men look up her skirt). Dahlia laughs at her for getting emotional over the dead horse because her emotions are tainting the happy outing they’re all having. Fantine being empathetic towards animals isn’t an inherently autistic trait by itself but her inability to suppress her emotions or just go along with what everyone else is doing is something I think a lot of neurodivergent people can relate to.

Her relationship with Tholomyes is probably the biggest example of Fantine not understanding unspoken social rules. I’m no history expert and people have definitely written more in depth posts on the relationships between upper class men and working class women in France in this period but from what I’ve gathered it was understood that these relationships were purely transactional. The men got sex and attention and the women got gifts and nice days out to places they couldn’t afford by themselves. There’s more nuance than that I’m sure but that’s the gist.

We know the other three grisettes are aware of this aspect of the relationship. They are eager to receive a “surprise”, an expensive gift they could later sell on. Favourite flatters her lover to his face and says all the things he expects of her but confesses to the other girls that she doesn’t like him because he isn’t playing his role of spending money on her.

Fantine is seemingly oblivious to all of this. Maybe it’s her ostracisation from the other girls that is keeping her ignorant or maybe she knows how it is for them but genuinely believes she and Tholomyes are different. Either way it’s clear to me that her and Tholomyes have very different ideas about their relationship and that subtext has not been picked up by Fantine. For the record, this is completely on Tholomyes, even if he’s supposed to be playing the expected role, leaving his mistress without any financial aid for their child together is bad even by the standards of the time. However Fantine is definitely naïve.

Also if you read Fantine as autistic, her reasons for being in love with Tholomyes make a lot more sense. From Hugo’s description, it doesn’t seem like Tholomyes has many redeeming features: he’s balding and missing teeth, he’s a student in his thirties and he is in poor health. Yet he pays attention to Fantine, he flatters her and spends money to keep her in a nice apartment.

If we assume that Fantine is autistic and has spent her life being an outsider, this onslaught of affection would lead her to let her guard down and believe that this is what love should look like. Even without the autism, Fantine was an orphan, she didn’t have any examples of what a marriage was supposed to look like growing up so how could she possibly resist a man who seems to be doing and saying all the right things?

I think my conclusion is it doesn’t really matter if you want to read Fantine as being autistic or not. I think all the factors I’ve outlined in this post can be explained by her upbringing and her still being very young during her relationship with Tholomyes rather than having to be neurodivergence. However, I think looking at Fantine through an autistic lense has given me a new appreciation for the character and being an outsider in society, a big theme in Les Mis, is generally a relatable sentiment for neurodivergent people and I think it’s interesting to explore that in the context of Fantine.

i think rapunzel likes it, she likes anything sweet i think we can all agree on that. eugene & lance both love it as well, its cheap and a good sweet to snack on, i think lance likes it more than eugene but they both enjoy it. Cassandra hates it, smth about her idk... varian has always been kinda iffy abt it but i think his dad has always liked it(the only sweet quirin probably enjoys) so varian kinda grew up around it. and the girl both have very different views on it, kiera hates it witg every bone in her body, and catalina likes it & always steals it from lance when he buys some lol

and hugo is the monster that likes the chocolate/maple ones.

So like, I hate candy corn, so I want to say everyone else hates candy corn, except Hugo because he’s wrong and he sucks.

But I guess I’ll take this seriously lmao. Rapunzel loves most sweets, I can see her liking it. Same with Lance and Catalina. Eugene and Varian don’t hate it but they don’t really like it either. I think Varian would eat it but Eugene wouldn’t, and probably reposts anti-candy corn memes. Same with Cass. Kiera despises it. And Quirin liking candy corn and only liking candy corn is canon to me now thank you.

Lucious Route Chapter 4 (1-5)

Last time on the Lucious Route, Liz had another dream about hanging out with Lucious and I’m starting to have a sneaking suspicion that only is Lucious also having these dreams, he’s also aware that they’re kind of half-canon while Liz isn’t, which is just greaaaat /s. Also Hugo’s here and Liz and Lucious are about to jump him for information, which is either going to work or crash and burn.

So Liz and Lucious watch Hugo approach the portrait of Claudia, the former princess of the day kingdom and Lucious’s ex, and

I’m sorry, but is anyone else really distracted by how anachronistic Lucious’s outfit is? I wish I had a better word than anachronistic because I truly do not have a time period that I need all the outfits to be in, but it just feels so aesthetically off.

Like what is this?? Why’s he wearing a zip-up hoodie AND an oversized tracksuit jacket? Are those track pants??? What the hell is that flannel doing? It would honestly be fine without the tracksuit! Are you a magical time-displaced prince or the unhinged tertiary side character of a Disney channel show that starts out as a recurring character and eventually gets bumped up to main cast? I think I just made Lucious sound more interesting than he actually is..

Anyway, Lucious starts getting all uppity about Hugo potentially defacing Claudia’s portrait, but Liz warns him to be patient and promises they will intervene if he tries to damage the portrait. For some reason, none of this commotion attracts Hugo’s attention, although it would really be funny if he went “i know you’re here by the way yall aint SUBTLE” halfway through this scene without even looking up.

Hugo’s song (because apparently this was a song and not a really weird monologue) ends at the moment I think it will NEVER end, and it’s revealed that it unlocks a secret door. Which has GOT to be the most inconvenient key out there. Imagine if you had to password protect something with a perfect live performance of Bohemian Rhapsody. I would simply chew cement.

Liz and Lucious follow Hugo into a luscious forest, because if there’s one thing these past few routes have loved, it’s sticking magical biomes in the weirdest places of the Labyrinth. They come across Hugo monologuing to himself, because I guess they couldn’t just give him a friend to create a dynamic duo so that he doesn’t just look like some weird guy monologuing to himself? Anyway, the defeat of the Minotaur (whenever the hell THAT happened, I don’t even fucking remember which route that was-) is causing the Labyrinth’s magic to get funky because for some reason, the magic was tied to the minotaur? Seriously? All because someone fucked-[REDACTED]

Anyway, Hugo wonders if he should let Lucious leave the Labyrinth now that Caesar’s curse has been broken (WITH STILL NO EXPLANATION AS TO HOW THAT HAPPENED IN THIS ROUTE BY THE WAY), which I have to quibble with for a moment.

The way Hugo’s phrasing it, he’s tying the breaking of Caesar’s curse to a Lucious’s potential freedom, implying that there’s some cosmic significance (for lack of a better word) to the way Caesar’s curse was broken. Like if its important enough for a time guardian to compare the two, it implies that the Baroque curse was broken for all the Baroques, even though that’s not what happened. It just broke for Caesar. Future Baroque generations WILL still carry the curse, if I’m not mistaken. So that begs the question: why is Caesar important to this? He’s not even the first Baroque to break his own curse. This is a question that I’m sure could have interesting answers, but unfortunately I think the most likely one is “because he’s an otome boy” and the writers said so.

Or I could just be reading too deeply into things, who knows.

Anyway, back to the regularly scheduled... this.

So Hugo ponders which timeline he should allow to exist and reveals he knows Liz and Lucious are there with a line that is significantly less funny than my earlier joke. Liz is somehow surprised that Hugo noticed them, even though they’ve been the most unstealthy fuckers I’ve ever seen. THEN the fucking Taffy/Remy hybrid shows up.

So then Hugo reveals that the Taffy hybrid is using Dragonkin magic, which isn’t a surprise to me because I’ve already sussed out that its Remy in disguise. (Wouldn’t it be super funny if I’m wrong and it’s not Remy tho? Lmfao). He also namedrops “Felix” and “Lacan” who are probably more Dragonkin and one of them is probably the weird blonde dude in Liz’s dreams. Taffy-Remy KNOWS Felix and Lacan and wonders why Hugo knows them. 

So just to summarize the next few series of events here, Hugo starts trapping Taffy-Remy in here while monologuing that he won’t let him resurrect the dragonkin because they’ll end the world or something. Liz decides to save Taffy-Remy, because she hasn’t yet figured out that it’s fucking Remy, and the chapter ends.

I wonder what Alfonse and Caesar are doing back in the palace rn.. I’ve just imagined Lucious, Alfonse, and Caesar sleeping on a single mattress on the floor Scott Pilgrim style. They all took a bath together last chapter, y’all can’t tell me it’s not at least in the realm of possibility.

people who thought varian having fellow scientists for friends was a bad idea because "it takes away his uniqueness of being one" is a pretty shallow and flat criticism

because if we're being for real, surely he is not the only scientist/alchemist that ever exists in the tangled universe, that would just be plain goofy. a group of people can indulge under the same umbrella of interest and still be distinct from each other at the same time. a great example i can think of is having a group of artist friends: fundamentally youre all good at drawing sure—but one maybe is better at rendering, one is a master at perspective, one is a pro at composition, one is a beast in color theory etc not to mention every one in the group having their own art style different from one another

the same can be said for team radical—yong is skilled in pyrotechnics and kinematics, you can count on him to estimate complicated physics. nuru is a pro in astronomy and mathematics, straight up the fastest calculator alive and the team can rely on her to make sure their equations are as accurate as possible before performing it in application. varian and hugo may both be capable of alchemy and engineering but they divide specialty on that front—varian is the better expert at alchemy and chemistry while hugo thrives at being the better mechanical engineer and thaumaturgy.

one of the endearing storyline in vat7k thats so relatable is finding your people, finding your tribe, your peers, individuals that you can connect with because of common interests. so varian having a group of people who are just like him tagging along on the road trip is a great idea. it doesnt take away his identity as a scientist, if anything, it offers so much more room for him to grow, to learn, to expand his knowledge, and to finally have people to share knowledge with.

but this is just my opinion and the former is theirs.

Harry, Ron Hermione were 17. Do you remember being 17? Yeah, take that mindset and imagine going through a goddamn war, one that alllll revolved around you/your best friend succeeding and if it didn't happen, there would be a dark age like no one had ever seen.

⚡️Harry would keep having nightmares, probably forever. There would probably be days where he laid in bed, unable to move due to the consuming guilt and/or depression which would just add more guilt and depression when he got out of it as he left Ginny to care for their kids and would wake to figure out he missed out on core memories of his children. Sometimes, desperate to see him, James, Albus and Lily would just lay there with him in silence. They witnessed their father go through periods of being totally present, totally happy and then he would randomly just look into the floor as if he was no longer there- his flashbacks were always quiet.

💫Ron, I feel, might end up going through substance addiction to deal with the loss of his brother coupled with moments of anger or just random, unjustified annoyance- the same goes for George and this would extremely strain their romantic relationships. He would most likely have flashbacks of countless moments of fear, would hear Hermione's screams at night, would see his brother's dead body upon that stone ground. Rose and Hugo felt so loved by their father, but also aprehensive because at any moment, his mood could switch.

🌙Hermione would have phases of constantly putting herself into intense moments of focus- her work, the kids, anything to keep her mind occupied out of fear those random moments where her arm burned or the memories of her husband spliced would return full force. She would eventually breakdown, her mind strained due to always, all the time, trying to ignore it all. Rose and Hugo witnessed this constantly- one minute she's fine, the next she's sobbing on the floor and Ron was barking at them to go to their room so they didn't have to be there for it, so they could leave him to console her.

☀️I feel like Ginny remained strong for her siblings, parents & Harry after the war to a degree that she ignored her own emotions and turmoil. Entirely. And then, finally when James was born, what was only supposed to be a flicker of post-partum went full fucking swing due to the fact she bottled everything inside for roughly 6 years straight. And it was bad- Harry was left caring for a newborn and his wife that couldn't move, eat, or bathe on her own. She was probably the only one of them besides Hermione who got proper therapy- the boys being too stubborn. When shit was better, she found herself going through these phases of dismissive attitude towards all her children, her PTSD coming out more in anger, probably similar to Ron and George. But she was especially this way to James- because she couldn't bear to feel the guilt about not being there for him upon his birth, she tried to ignore him entirely at points until she finally realized what she was doing later on.

Then there's everyone else- they would be so fucking destroyed by what happened like??? And their kids would have to watch it- they would grow up with parents riddled with PTSD, an entire generation that had the people raising them be torn from war; some that were able to move past it, some that weren't, and some that were always somewhere in the middle.

delina is a over-achiever who came from a pretty wealthy family in south-east england. known in her new american school as an academic overachiever by her teachers, and an it-girl by her new peers. in england, she lived in the countryside in a decent well-off home and attended a boarding school in surrey. firstly starting secondary in a generic school nearby for 3 months before transferring later due to how bad the teachers and environment were and she wasn’t getting anywhere with studies. when she was 14, they eventually decided to move to massachussets for her mothers work relocation.
