Alita and Gally's Idos meeting each other.
Dyson might be terrified and confused by Gally. Daisuke would find Alita adorable and immediately feel a fatherly instinct to protect her. Then Dyson would remind him that's HIS daughter.
The Idos between each other would get along great. Daisuke would be glad he never got married.
Hard to say what Alita's reactions to the ARs would be. Possibly this:
Alita, turning to Gally: Waw. How many of us are there? Are they from different comics or movies? Or like a novel or anime or video game? Why do they have numbers but we don't? What would our numbers be?
Alita gets a look at Gally’s version of their story.
Movie Alita is horrified to find out Gally was working for Zalem. Also, she'd be surprised both at how much darker and goofier the manga version of her world is.
Alita is disappointed at how unsexy manga Yugo is. So is her Hugo.
Hugo: That’s not me; that’s some lost child.
Alita: That’s your boyfriend…?
Gally: Yes. That was my first boyfriend.
Alita: Continue…
Motorball
Alita: I'm getting so close to the Motorball finals!
Gally: How was your first encounter with Joshugan? Are you more worried about him stealing your win or stealing your Ido?
Alita, very confused: Why would he steal my dad?
How would a potential meeting between movie!Alita and manga!Gally go?
I actually imagined that before, the vibe was as if the fourth wall was broken. Like, they are aware one is from the movie, and the other is from the manga.
I had few scenes in my head (they were supposed to be comic strips but I can bet I would never draw them anyway):
1. Alita takes Gally on a tour across the movie Iron City.
Gally is surprised how cheerful and colorful this city can look sometimes.
2. Gally meets various characters from the movie
... and she is in awe how everybody so far, Alita included, is taller than their manga counterpart.
Then they approach Dyson Ido. Gally stays here, and eventually says to Alita:
G: Everybody is so tall, Ido must be a friggin mountain then!
Like, it didn't even come to her head that this old man, who is shorter than Hugo and not that much taller than Alita, can be Ido. Alita makes awkward face.
3. Movie Nova takes off his glasses in front of Gally.
G: Oh, wow. You did that outside of a dream?
A: *runs to her* Gally no! He's dangerous!
G: Don't worry, he's in uncle mode now.
A, N *visibly confused*: ... uncle what?
4. Alita asks Gally to share her wisdom:
A: Ooo mighty original Alita! You know how this story ends, tell me, how I can get rid of Nova?
G: You can't. Bitch keeps coming back like a boomerang. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. *flies away*
A: What, no, you're kidding me, NOOOO COME BACK
_
In general, Gally meeting Alita and other characters could be interesting idea for a small fan fic or roleplay I think? Or just something to theorize about. I wonder how Alita/Gally would react to some manga/movie counterparts.

Its sad so many people's first exposure to Alita is gonna be that movie, for a variety of reasons.
In particularly because it tries to cram several points of the title characters various personality eras into one character.
The original Battle Angel Alita Manga is frankly one of the best Sci-Fi pieces of fiction ever made, nevermind manga's.
And one of the mayor reasons why it is so good, isn't just the very detailed and intricate setting, the very good and instantly striking action scenes, or the artwork of a mangaka at his prime.
All of those are great, but what makes Alita so good, is the main character herself. Alita. Alita is in my opinion the single most dynamic, and ever developing character in manga history.
And the reason she is, is because throughout the entire story, she is a character who develops drastically between every single mayor moment in her life.
The best way to illustrate this is that Alita before Hugo's death, and post it, is a completely different person than she was at the start of the manga.
She was an innocent at heart kid, who tried to be this great fighter for justice and all that jazz, all the while struggling with the fact that as a cyborg she is never really going to be able to truly cut loose and show Hugo how passionately she feels about him, because she would rip him to pieces if she did.
She feels imperfect and ugly because her body is not made for love(her own words). That alone is so much more interesting than what the film did with the usual "do you think im pretty even though im a robot?".
Also, in the manga she doesn't actually come out and say this directly to Hugo, because that isn't how any shy, smitten, teenage girl would talk about their deepest insecurities to their crush.
Instead she has a talk with her dad about it, her only real parental figure, who's job it is to guide her in life.
Also, speaking of Hugo, the movie REALLY didn't get his and Alita's story.
The movie focused way too much about making him likable, than what the actual story was supposed to be. In the manga, as he loses it at the end and tries to climb up to Zalem, the reader REALLY buys that he's completely lost it, because the manga took the time to fully flesh him out, why his is the way he is, how he reached the point he did, and more importantly it sells his insane breakdown way better, and at the end as he lies on the cable and just monologs about how the world never cared about him at all, you really feel the emotion in his voice as he acknowledges that his entire existence is a giant joke.
Which in turn is what the entire romance between him and Alita have been building towards, as she tells him that there is more to the world than the Scrapyard and Salem, and then pleads that SHE cares about him, and to make a new life with her.
Its an actual touching moment that builds on what the arc set up, and is GUNNM's world in a nutshell. It's a rusty relationship between a smitten girl, and a scoundrel dreamer who frankly is not the best person in the world. But it's pure, it's honest, it's powerful, and it really makes you believe it as Hugo finally opens his eyes that he had someone with him who truly cared about him all along.
Which in turn makes the automatic grid coming down so much more gutpunching. Also im just going to say it, the cinematography of the movie vs manga is dreadful.
And probably best of all, this moment isn't just the end of a story arc. It is arguably the most impactful character momemt Alita has, as her first boyfriend dying is the single most traumatic thing that happens to her in the original manga. It completely shattered her optimism, and sense of wanting to be a great hero, and even after she starts to mentally recover, she never really regains that sense of innocence or optimism about life back again after this.
So many stories use the trope "forgotten fallen friend" trope, where characters stop focusing on their fallen friends and loved one if it conflicts with their established character traits.
Not alita. Though she doesn't openly say it, it is extremely clear that even 10 years after his death, and after having found a second love, she is still mourning his death.
And the entire manga is like that. After the first two storylines, Alita is a very different character after every single arc, because similar life-changing developments happens to her in every one, and you understand why she is the way she is at any point in time.
Compared to the movie, where Alita is pretty much a mixture between different eras of herself from various manga arcs. Which is far less compelling.
Also, the world in general is way too sanitized. Its not just Hugo, Ido starts off as very unhealthy in the way he views Alita, but has some character development where his relationship with Alita changes a lot, and despite generally trying to be a good dad, it's not before 4-5 volumes in that it really hits it's stride as a healthy, father/daughter relationship.
The junkyard is way too clean and not run down enough, Motorball isn't portrayed as a complete bloodsport from start to finish, Salem's design is a massive downgrade from the manga, and A lot of the hilarious dark comedy mixed with adorable, innocent alita moments was not kept.
All in all, i could not recommend the manga highly enough. Especially since you're a Fullmetal fan. It's pretty clear that the mangaka behind FMA is a BIG fan of Alita, both art and storytellingwise.
Interesting. I can't deny that the movie tossed out some interesting ideas and scenarios, even if they largely fell flat due to being compressed and remixed, so I can buy that the original really ran with its material. Something had to have intrigued James Cameron for 30 years. XD My library only has the first two volumes of the manga, but that should be enough for a sample. I admit, I do rather like stories about robots trying/wanting to be human, so if it a good level of quality, I'll probably enjoy it.
It's funny you also say the movie didn't live up to the look of the manga, because one of the things that struck me about the movie was the the general look did strike me as being 'anime' in style (as opposed to a more generic scifi look or the super-common Bladerunner homage), but that might be more about copying certain designs than the final overall appearance. And, of course, that speaks nothing to the fidelity to the source material, just my general impression of anime stylings.
Your follow-up Ask is answered below the cut:
of course as usual it cant be as simple as recommending something though, because there is a caveat to Alita as a series.
Namely that the manga franchise is essentially separated into three different sections.
The original Alita, Last Order, and Mars Chronicles.
And i can tell you right out, you would HATE last order. like, EVERYTHING bad about shonen series that i can tell you despise is in Last order. It does have some wonderful world building and story ideas, but overall, whereas the original manga was a very meticulously and deep look into the human condition, Last Order is stupid fun shonen.
Some people like that, and i might have as well... if it wasn't for the fact that it does not fit in with the original manga at all. I don't know what happened, whether it was the editor not reigning him in, or the magazine wanting him to get bigger and more bombastic, always topping what had come before, but Last Order is pretty much completely removed from everything that made the original great.
And in hindsight, it's clear that the mangaka recognized what a terrible mistake Last order was, because when he came back to finish the series in the final installment, he pretty much expunged 99% of everything from last order, and reset the feeling of the franchise back to what the original manga had.
if it weren't for some key details from last order's plot, and the larger questions of how the hell alita went from one place to another, it would pretty much just be a complete reboot.
So under normal circumstances i would tell you to just skip Last Order, and skip straight to Mars chronicles.
However, that isn't quite the case, because the original Alita actually had an ending. and not an open ending where the story could go on either. it was a decisive, satisfying ending that bookended alita's entire storyline and put the kebash on future action adventures for her.
It was such a decisive ending in fact, that in order for there to be a story, Last order had to essentially retcon/reimagine the last 3 chapters of the original story, thus derailing a perfectly happy ending that wrapped up Alita's struggles and journey where she finally got the one thing she always truly wanted and searched for at the end of it all.
As such my advice if you do pick up the series, End your read at the final chapter of the original manga. While the mangaka had plans to continue it past that point(he was forced to end it early due to life threatening illness), In the end, the product that was made was thematically the ending the original had been building towards.
I don't know how mars chronicle is going to end(its still running) but due to several developments in Last Order, it simply is impossible for the story to end on the same notes and themes it originally did. meaning its probably going to remain the superior ending.
Amusingly, you actually made me want to try Last Order. XD I mean, you're probably right that I won't enjoy it due to its shonen nature, and I might even find it more grating than One Piece, but I have to really respect that it doesn't position itself as an in-continuity sequel to the original. We have so many things in our current pop-culture like the AtLA comics, Puella Magi Madoka Magica Rebellion, the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Robocop 2, most Marvel and DC comics, etc, that try to justify themselves by undoing the satisfying endings of the originals. Sure, we can ignore that kind of thing out-of-universe, but for those of us invested in the stories and characters, it can sometimes be a very difficult mental leap to 'unhappen' stuff we don't like when their events don't actually contradict the original (no matter how thematically contradictory they are). But Alita's sequel positions itself right off the bat as a What If scenario, an alternate timeline, something incompatible with the original from an in-universe perspective.
Basically, I like that it respects the original enough to leave it alone. If you want more Alita, Last Order is there, but not at the expense of the original, and if you found the original perfectly satisfying, Last Order isn't trying to claim to be an extension. And yet, at the same time, neither is it a traditional reboot. You don't have to start over with it.
Even if I wind up rolling my eyes at it and tapping out at the first oversized fight sequence, at least it does one thing right. And yeah, that's probably the only notable aspect of it, but that's not bad for a sequel.
So thanks for the warning, and the intriguing insight into one sequel that at least cleans up its own mess! XD

What Alita ships even are there?
I'm not just asking about ships that involve Alita (Lou×Alita, Fogia×Alita, Hugo×Alita), but ships from the series in general. There doesn't seem to be much shipping going on in this fandom. Why is that?
