Zalem and Scrapyard in Unreal Engine 5

I created this scene in Unreal Engine 5 using Megascans assets.

Zalem city was modeled by 3D hardsurface artist Izan Ramos, so kudos to him!

I only reduced the number of polygons and scaled it according to official info (8km in diameter).

For now, I only focused to make nice looking images in a short time, using the things I had at the moment.

It helped to refresh my past knowledge, but it's nowhere close to the clool things that could be done.

Hope I in the future I'll find time to make a better use of UE5 and my skills, like a legit movie-based location, characters, better optimized (littering the terrain with high quality textured assets is NOT game optimized, don't do this kids haha), MAYBE something playable.

So I made this blog in case I'll find that time and can share something interesting!

I think I'll share more screenshots and a video maybe.

thinking about Gunnm (battle angel Alita) again, specially on the possibility of new movies and thinking how they would adapt one of my favorite moments of Gunnm, and i think is impossible actually, because of one of their decisions. this moment i am talking is the secret of zalem, everything about it, the secret itself, the revelation and the consequences

so basically, all people of zalem have their brain substituted by a chip when they become adults, they can't choose about that and don't know about it, they don't do this change, Jeru (ketheres) does, and when the secret is leaked by Nova, well, Zalem colapse.

It is the colapse of their identity, they believed that they were better than people of scrapyard because they don't change their bodies, it is part of their superiority complex, also the changed part is the brain, so their whole identity colapses. Adults become violent and start killing people, the children that still have their brains lose their connection with the adults, the city colapses basically.

I know that the movie based alot of himself on the OVA, BUT, when the OVA released, the secret didn't exist, but already existed when the movie released and they still show that Chiren have an human brain, so or they think about an explanation about why her havested parts have a human brain, or they don't adapt the secret at all. this would make me sad, but it does seems to be the wisest choice.

I wanted to write for her for some time now and unnamed recent events have pushed me to finally do it

The Manchester derby is always one of your favourite matches. Getting to prove once more that Manchester is sky blue always gets you buzzing. This match was especially important, being the last of the conti cup group stages.

It all went down hill when Jill went down after an alteration with Katie Zalem. You were right there, you saw that it wasn't a rough challenge, but your girlfriend stayed down holding her knee and you run to her side immediately.

"Baby are you okay?"

You kneeled beside her and took her hand. You girlfriend was still on the ground her face converting into a painful expression as she tried to get up. You noticed the med team running on the field and gulped down your worries.

"My knee feels wrong."

The rest of the team had gathered around Jill, worried faces trying to stay calm. Alex ushered everyone away to give space to the med team so they can take care of Jill properly.

Alex stayed by your side as you anxiously chewed on your fingernails. Soon the team helped Jill get up and limp her way off the pitch. You felt a nagging feeling at the pit of your stomach while watching your girlfriend in pain without being able to do anything to help.

You tried to get your head back in the game and play after the whistle blew once more but Jill lingered in the back of your mind. After the second half started you found yourself catching her eyes in the stands and you couldn't help but grin. She was happily watching the team play, so that meant that she's fine.

Or so you thought.

The moment you left the pitch you swarmed to your girlfriend's side immediately but you couldn't find her. Some of the staff informed you that she was taken to the physio for some extra exams. You tried not think about the worst but the image of your girlfriend falling down and clutching her knee wouldn't leave your mind.

Soon you found the room and saw one of the medics close the door. They had an expression of relief and pity when they saw you, it did nothing to ease your worries. You opened the door slowly to see your girlfriend laying on one of the beds with her head hung low. You entered the room and took a seat on the bed next to her. When Jill didn't look at you, you placed your hand on the top of her head and leaned down to try and catch her eyes. Jill's head shot up and your heart broke at the sight of her puffy red eyes. You took her face in your hands as Jill's bottom lip trembled.

"It's my ACL..."

You closed your eyes and breathed out a heavy sigh. That's the answer you dreaded from the moment you saw her go down.

"God baby, I'm so sorry."

The moment the words left your mouth Jill completely broke down. You pulled her in the safety of your arms as heavy sobs racked her body. Her tears stained the side of your neck and your shirt but you couldn't care less. You rubbed her back to soothe her as you whispered sweet nothings into her blonde hair. After a few moments her sobs calmed into sniffles and you kissed the top of her head.

Your heart broke when you thought about how you won't get to play together until the next season and how Jill will miss the Olympics, all her dreams crushed because of this stupid injury.

Jill stays firmly tucked at your shoulder and you don't make a move to startle her. You wrap your arms tighter against her. You want to take her away from the world and kiss her lips until the turn upright into her beautiful smile.

"You're strong and you'll come back from this stronger okay? And I'll be with you. All the way."

Jill looks at you and finally smiles and your heart skips a beat.
