tbf the goodwill postcanon burned was mainly from outside interactions with the staff and such, before being nuked with the cheating arc.

disagree. i was into hs2 for the first part. the outside interactions were definitely sorta. cutting at the edges of the goodwill, but i certainly just said i didnt like the writers but was still willing to give them a shot.

then pq started to get worse, and i started to notice more flaws paired with the writers and hs2 was no longer fun. yiffy, right before her release, was actually a very positive idea. people were excited for a new kid, who was this kid's parents? we know she's related to jade! so everyone was making cutesy girls with giant glasses, which, like, i love that character archetype.

i cannot stress enough pq was literally the thing that carried me through to like hs2. when hs2 was getting worse i was still giving every pq playthrough a shot. i LIKED pq for the most part. looking back now, its a huge mess, but it started getting bad in terms of writing was in the alpha kids, because allllll of the alpha routes were linking to postcanon. nobody else's routes really super did that. (though the comment about not bringing kanaya and rose together despite throwing davekat at eachother made me mad at the time too LOL)

and then the actual idea for yiffany was revealed (and later it was stated via patreon that they went out of their way to design what no one wanted yiffany to be) and everything really fell apart.

kinda sad how davekat was like. it truly was a big deal at the time when it was confirmed by hussie. some of yall who came into homestuck after it was already over dont understand how great it felt actually to finally have a relatively healthy and affectionate m/m relationship shown in HS when all the others were typically dysfunctional, abusive, or one-sided. it was exciting!!! we were all jst kinda happy for dave and karkat yknow. even if it resulted in some pointless "which quadrant are they in?" discourse and some shipping wars but thats just par for the course in hs fandom

and then the epilogues and homestuck 2 dropped and like. ooooohhhhh my godddddd. its completely swamped in stupid melodrama and for some reason they completely ruined jades character for the sake of davekat angst and they ignored daves development in the comic for half-baked sexuality crisis plotline andlike. it feels like everyone turned on davekat and now its cringe or smth and its like. Wow . we had like . three years to feel good abt this and now its gone forever. Awesome

The New Hs2 Update is so good Jadewise. Bullshit under the readmore

Kanaya has been betrayed by her friends. And she is fucking mad as she deserves to be!!!! Her own WIFE cheated on her with Jade because she wanted to see what would happen!!

I think these paragraphs are like, so telling of how Jade is in HS2. This is Jade in HOMESTUCK 2. This isn’t JADE IN HOMESTUCK.

Jade was treated by her friends in a way that felt alienating to her. And she responded, and rose enabled that feeling of alienation.

And I do believe Jade does feel bad! The fear of rejection was sewn deep into her and it’s now rearing it’s ugly head. She’s even defending Rose from the anger of Kanaya while rose doesn’t even bother to defend herself at all! Jade is apologising not rose!

Jades decisions were illogical because they’re made out of fear and loneliness. Out of the desire for normalcy in a world where you are so different from everyone else. Jade does not believe she has a future, she doesn’t believe in a world where she can be happy without the existence of Yiffy. She is putting so much pressure on Yiffy.

We also don’t have the full story of why yet.

Tldr; Jade is in the wrong but it’s so interesting of why.

(Roses cold characterisation in this is also rather strange to me tbh. It reminds me a lot of her getting drunk on the meteor and asking kanaya if she’s going to break up with her but not exactly. Same vibes different presence. The treatment of kanaya as an emotional doormat has been a persistent thing throughout homestuck and it’s strange to see it happen to Rosemary. Shrug)

HOMESTUCK: BEYOND CANON NEWS UPDATE!!

Hi, James here. What a week. What a month. What a year. Hope this update finds you well. About time we heard from these guys.

A lot of things goin on this month, it was just announced that the guys over at Requiem are doing their Homestuck Cafe event again this year for the 15 year anniversary. Neat! I won’t be there and I don’t really have much to do with it, but I’m sure they will talk about it in the coming weeks.They’re also doing a limited run of merch for the event, which is kinda cool. If you are in the Southern California area and are the type of person that likes themed desserts and drinks it could be fun!

What else..? Over on Patreon we ran a poll. If you are a member and hadn’t seen it, it looks like people generally want to stagger releases of paid patron content so that it's not all dumped at the beginning of the month. A lot of little projects are waiting to finalize things with like ONE guy, so hopefully I will have more exciting news for you soon.

I promised a little transparency even when it was mundane, so here’s some updates of where we’re at: as a team we’ve been looking at merch and we have an opportunity to do a few shirts (GOD. DAMMIT. THIS ISN'T PART OF THE NEWS UPDATE BY THE WAY, I JUST HATE MORE SHIRTS. GOD.) as a sort of trial run with a manufacturer and supplier to see if we’re worth it, but I kind of want to make something a little more interesting than say an illustration on a hanes beefy-t. You know what I mean? Not even a long sleeve? C'mon man. Chumi has been reaching out to musicians about this vinyl, but if we can’t get ahold of the last two guys we might just have to go ahead without them which would suck. I’ll try reaching out through other avenues as well.

The new websites got some stuff in the works, but we’ll be halting some of that to focus on a few key updates that are coming up that will require a little more on the technical side. In the meantime, keep those suggestions and typo fixes coming.

As a team we are planning to do something small and fun for the anniversary, so stay tuned for more about that next month.

re: the tags on the post you just reblogged; would genuinely Love to hear your take on the themes of homestuck. because so many of its themes are at odds with each other and the reader that it truly does become an ouroboros by the end. and that’s fascinating and heartbreaking at the same time

I really can't phrase it better than "eats itself alive by the end," honestly. Once the Beta Kids scratch their session, you can feel how tired and frustrated the author is. It's like he starts hating his own work and how massively it blew up, when he never planned for it to be a project that lasted so long.

And thus it feels like he starts turning on his work's own themes.

Sburb (the game) was abusive and traumatic, but seemed to be trying to make the kids ""grow"" by some unknown philosophy. Figuring out what Sburb (or its creators) were trying to accomplish was a theme.

Only for the author to get frustrated at the idea of there BEING such a motive, seeming to suddenly pivot to Sburb just being a universe-generating mechanism

The theme about motives, being "pawns" in a greater game and uncovering the mystery, thinking critically about authority figures including the GAME ITSELF is unceremoniously discarded for a "Nothing matters actually" conclusion

Another theme was change and growing up, dealing with your mistakes as you make them. How even in a world with time travel, trying to use metaphysical shennanigans to avoid your fuckups just backfires. Eventually you have to face the music, and you'll be better off for it.

But then the author becomes brutishly cynical. The main casts' worst traits eat them alive on the trip to the new session, we learn the Beta trolls ruined their own playthrough and now painfully slog through their afterlives, the Alpha kids are aimless and trapped in a doomed session.

The theme about growth and facing your own mistakes becomes about stagnation and inevitability.

But honestly I think the most telling change in the author's mindset comes from looking at the Alpha Trolls vs the Beta Trolls.

Like, the way that the Alpha Trolls ALL got a full personality, several interactions with the main cast, and through fan input started evolving into characters that had little traits of the fandom at the time

Homestuck was always a story with a crass tone (and it's kind of incredible how quickly the lingo changed, making early HS look a lot edgier in hindsight than it was at the time) but it felt like there was a lot of love for how these characters had kinda been forged together.

Then you get to the Beta Trolls in a dream bubble, basically all tossed into a high-production walkaround minigame. Several of them just direct, joyless jabs at the audience, less of them relevant.

For me it's really the turning point on the themes, the later acts have always felt super dissonant from the early acts because of that

So in my mind I see it as two big "parts" and examine them together as what I feel was a weak synthesis.

about the upd8. okay maybe i just haven't read HS in so long I just forgot something but I thought that the Vriska mindcontrol didn't fully work on humans and just put them to sleep??

which would make this either a mistake or a hint that Vrissy's powers are different -> she's even biologically different in some ways, for the inevitable argument that she is her own person.
