A Cursed Child Theory: Albus was sorted into Slytherin because Scorpius was.

HEAR ME OUT OKAY!!

The facts:

The sorting hat will take your wishes into account if you feel strongly enough

Albus felt very strongly about not wanting to be in Slytherin

The hat wasn't sure at first: "He puts his hat on ALBUS’s head – and this time he seems to take longer – almost like he too is confused."

So why was he sorted into Slytherin?

Because Scorpius was sorted into Slytherin, and Scorpius asked him if he wanted to be called Al or Albus.

We know our boy hates people calling him Al.

We know he feels an intense pressure to be who his family wants him to be.

Scorpius' first instinct was to ask him what he wanted to be called. In Albus' eyes, Scorpius was the first person in his life to put his wishes first. PLUS, we can only assume that after the scene cuts the two had the time of their little lives chatting on that train journey.

So when Scorpius was sorted into Slytherin, a little subconscious part of Albus' brain went "if he's in Slytherin, it's okay if I am too" and that's why the hat decided Slytherin.

In the first alternate universe (in the original script) he's in Gryffindor. Why? There's no Rose to force him to try and make a friend on the train, therefore no meeting with Scorpius, therefore he gets put in Gryffindor because Slytherin now has no redeeming qualities to him.

Scorpius' kind lil soul is the reason Albus Potter was put in Slytherin.

okay so storytime:

guys I was a hardcore Cursed Child (London) fan when it first came out. saw the show opening night, then numerous times after that, kept up with the fandom, all that jazz. then I took a break for the past several years

today I went back to see it on a whim and

UHHHHHHHH

GUESS THEY MADE SCORBUS CANON WHILST I WAS AWAY HUH

(how is this real life????)

my face was an absolute picture I wish someone could have captured the expressions I kept making, I felt like I was going INSANE or having literal delusions

every time a line was different (or missing altogether??) I had to stop myself going HEY WHAT PARDON, and that final scene literally had me whispering "oh holy sh -" under my breath every five seconds lol

what a bizarre and lovely experience??

it took 8 years and umpteen rewrites but somehow this beloved little ship managed to scramble its way into canon. just. wow. I'm so happy for us all

when did this happen? who made the final call on scorbus? does anyone know the details?

I love that it is now canon (thank you, Polly Frame) that Ginny just understands Albus; she completely understands that Albus is finding wonderful clarity surrounding his love for Scorpius and she accepts that so whole-heartedly.

Ginny just loves and understands her son, and that's all there is to it. It's so beautiful.

Context: Polly Frame, who plays cast seven's Ginny in London's Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, gives a knowing nod and smile towards Scorpius when telling Albus that she thinks he is now finding "wonderful clarity" after he says he thought he liked Delphi.

Love that Albus looked like he was close to tear before he hugged Scorpius for the first time. It was probably the roughest day in his life, things were complicated and his emotion was a tangled mess. And then there was Scorpius, smiling bright like a sun, so happy and uncomplicated. It warmed him inside out. Then Albus proceeded to look at Scorpius with fondness and indulgence as he answer those quizzes enthusiastically. They are so small and precious.

Anthony Boyle understood the assignment when he worked with the costume designers to have Scorpius wear skinny jeans and pointed, old man shoes rather than trainers.

I love how awkward Scorpius is like Lucius and Draco carried themselves with such confidence and elegance in school meanwhile Scorpius hasn't came to terms with the fact his long gangly arms and legs are HIS long gangly arms and legs and forgets how to walk whenever he's nervous. Takes a few more years before he processes the idea that he has a body.
