Day 1- A Fav Fic under 5k

In the aftermath of the war, Lavender Brown rediscovers herself in a tiny flat above her Diagon Alley tea shop. Parvati helps.

This is such a gorgeous on for Parvati and Lavender. Tee's way of writing is flows so effortlessly here, telling us a story about friends who have gone through some terrible things and find their way back to each other again. It's realistic, angsty, and curious. Also, there's a tea shop!

Day 2- A Comfort Fic

I Await a Protector by megyal (Drarry, M, 5.7k)

A snarky Patronus and its even more snarky master insist on disturbing Harry's peace of mind.

I love this one so much, and it's been a long-time fav. I love the way Patronuses are used in this fic since it really makes the pull between Harry and Draco super solid. The way this story was written really cool...almost like taking pieces of a puzzle and putting everything together. If you love snarky Draco and Harry jumping into his usual Gryffindor mode to save the day, check this one out.!

Day 9- A Rare Pair Fic under 2k

Oliver tries out some really, really bad pick up lines on Percy.

This is short as hell, but the pick-up lines are gold, I swear! I could totally see Percy cringing but also loving that Oliver is trying to use them on him, and maybe he's just fond? Oliver is totes trying, and it's awesome! XD

Perceptual Prompts is back for the summer, with the challenge running from August 1 - 31, 2023 this year (a little over 1 week from now!). As a refresher, this challenge is themed around perception and the 5 senses (ie. touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste) and encourages creators to use various prompts to make fic, art and more. A few updates have been made to the Guidelines and FAQ pages, so please take a look for 2023 general challenge info, as well as details for the timeline, creating/submitting works, and more. Some minor changes for this year are as follows:

How many wips do you have currently?

At least 20, between works begun and posted on AO3 and works with their own file/outline. There's also the doc of "idea nuggets" that is 11 pages long.

Which one are you finding the hardest to finish?

There are two. The first is "The Perils of Innocence", my giant HP story. It's a problem because I lost a lot of genuine motivation when I dropped the series after the trash fire of the sixth book (spite can be powerful, but it only gets you so far). That was the point where I dropped the idea of making it a four-part series covering all seven years and decided I'd wrap up the story in first year. And then JKR started showing what a shit person she is, and that's ground what motivation I did have into specks. I do intend to finish it, but it's been VERY slow going, especially when newer and shinier fandoms took over. The second is "Skydancer", the sequel to my first Voltron longfic "Scattered". Part of the problem with it was me realizing I was repeating the same basic plot I had for "The Quintissential Bond" (another stalled WIP) and taking a lot of time to make sure that they were different enough that someone reading both would enjoy them. But the main sticking point here is that when I wrote most of "Scattered" and planned for "Skydancer", I was still lightly multishipping a few ships and sprinkling them into what was a gen story. Then I became a devoted Sheith shipper. So now, it's hard to go back into that universe, where I created a past with Shiro's family fostering Keith to explain their closeness in S1-2, and try to write them being very close and protective of each other without tripping over the line into the romance I see in them.

What does it usually look like when inspiration strikes for you?

A phrase that is either a title or a suggestion for a scene. A what-if that diverges from canon. Something I see in another fic that doesn't get explored and I want to explore it. A meet-cute I witness in real life. A discussion with other fans. It can be anything. And I concentrate on it, mentally outlining or adding detail until I'm where I can jot down notes. The best ones are the ones that have my guts twisting and quivering with excitement as I think and write.

Do you curate playlists for each fic or is your process different?

Music isn't really part of my process at all. I can write in silence, ask Pandora to play one of my stations, or whatever. I do have a little playlist of Sheith that I put together several years ago when I realized I had several songs that meant Sheith to me. https://8tracks.com/avidbeader/my-sheith-songs

Do you go balls to the wall and write as you go or are you more organized?

I am haphazardly organized. When I have the ideas developed, I outline and sometimes have scenes summarized as paragraphs, ready to be extended into the final product. But I can also find rabbits to chase down holes and write in spurts of inspiration, suddenly finding a chapter or story where I hadn't planned on one.

Appearance

Overall, Dan Feng's physical appearance remains the same with some changes. 

The beautiful azure scales have turned green-blue with gold dots. Between his scales, lotus flowers grow and bloom. His horns are more branch-like with plum blossoms growing. The furs of his tail became matted and have thinned out from Dan Feng's bad habit of scratching/picking at his tail. 

Currently, Dan Feng prefers to wear plain/simple robes or hanfu. With his condition, he cannot be bothered to wear the complicated and many layers of luxurious outfits he used to have. The only jewelry he wears is the red tassel earring.

Personality 

Before, Dan Feng was known to be an aloof and frigid individual by most people. Only those who got to know him knew he was a person with emotions like anyone else. 

Now, Dan Feng isolates himself from the world like the new moon.

With his mental health deteriorating by Yaoshi "Blessings", Dan Feng is a shell of his former self. When left alone, he is eerily quiet and remains rooted to his seat by the window watching the world move on while he wastes away. However, if approached, one must be careful for he is in no mood to tolerate company.

Especially if you're an Abomination of Yaoshi, or related to THEM, Dan Feng will not hesitate to tear you apart. In his rage-filled mind, any traces of Abundance must be eliminated. An irony considering Dan Feng has become an Emanator of Abundance (against his will).

However, Dan Feng too wishes for Death embrace and unfortunately, he is not allowed to die under Yaoshi watchful eyes.

History

Warning (Will be updated as needed): Implied Body Horror. Implied Forced Transformation. Manipulation.

The status of High Elder is a duty placed upon Dan Feng shoulders. His burdens is to lead his people to a better path, to honor his ancestors allegiance to the Xianzhou, and to seek a cure to his race cursed infertility.

Despite Dan Feng personal involvement in the research, they are limited by what means they are able to pursue without breaking the Ten Unpardonable Sins. However, Dan Feng has no issues with this. In fact, he finds it a challenge to try to break his race curse without resorting to the likes to the Disciples of Sanctus Medicus.

Unfortunately, Yaoshi had a different opinion.

A single glance from THEM was enough to alter Dan Feng fate.

It was not an instantaneous change, but a slow and painful transformation over the years.

Yaoshi "blessings" invaded his entire being. Roots dig deeper than flesh, drinking up his ichor for their flowers to pierce his skin and bloom beautifully. Their stems intertwined with his blood vessels, wrapping tightly around his heart. Azure scales have dulled and shed for green-blue scales to replace it. The majestic horns atop of his head have shed painfully, and the stumps growing into jagged tree-like branches are much more painful.

A beautiful monster, Dan Feng thinks, but a monster nontheless.

What's worse is that throughout the days of staying in his bed, bleeding and coughing flower petals, are THEIR voices in his head.

THEY comfort him. THEY soothe him. THEY tempt him.

Dan Feng fears the day he will succumb to THEM. He will be alone, helpless, and in pain without anyone by his side.

And Dan Feng knows a part of him has started to seek the mocking warmth of THEIR voices beckoning him give into salvation.

Abilities

For this verse, Dan Feng will follow the Path of Abundance and wields Imaginary element. He uses Cloudhymn magic to heal allies and provides buffs in exchange for his own health.

Basic Attack: Deals Imaginary damage to a single enemy based on Dan Feng HP%

Skill: Activates Dragon Heart in exchange for [percentage] of Dan Feng HP. While Dragon Heart is activated, Dan Feng heals allies every turn based on his HP% and buffs their ATK for 2 turns. After Dragon Heart ends, [percentage] HP will be returned to Dan Feng.

During [Mode Name] activation, Dan Feng cannot use his skill.

Ultimate: Dan Feng deals Imaginary damage to all enemies based on his HP%. If he uses his ultimate while Dragon Heart, he loses a [percentage] of his HP and continues to keep Dragon Heart activated for another turn. For a single turn, his Outgoing Healing% and ATK buffs are greatly enhanced.

Talent: For every ally who recovers HP during Dragon Heart, Dan Feng can stack up Tainted Azure Scale to 3 times. At the end of Dragon Heart, if one ally or more are defeated in battle, Dan Feng can revive them based on the number of Tainted Azure Scale stacked. However, if no allies are defeated in battle, Dan Feng will convert them to Bud of the Ambrosial Arbor instead providing crit dmg% boost for 2 turns.

Tecniques: After using technique, Dan Feng can immediately activate Dragon Heart at the start of battle and consume [percentage] of his HP at the start of battle.

Cloudhymn Magic: Due to his heritage, Dan Feng had a strong aptitude with Cloudhymn magic. He is capable of controlling water, creating mirages of lotuses and spears, sealing/breaking seals, manipulating the weather, and powerful healing. 

Levitation: It is implied Dan Feng can float/fly into the air as a humanoid. 

Transformation: It is implied Dan Feng, as High Elder, can transform into a full dragon. He is also capable of hiding his Vidyadhara features and appear as an unassuming humanoid. 

Martial Arts: Dan Feng  is proficient in Cloudlancer art, one of the many martial arts used in the Xianzhou. While it is possible for Dan Feng to be familiar with other weapon types, including bare-handed martial arts, he prefers the spear. 

Combat Experience: Since he was trained to fight and join the war against the Abundance, it is natural Dan Feng has build-up experience from that. He is a powerful spell-caster and a strong warrior who enjoys sparring with Jingliu and the other HCQ members.

Weapon: Dan Feng wields a magical orb/pearl acting as a catalyst for his powers. Cloud Piercer is a spear he wields with pride as it was forged by Yingxing. Other weapons are pretty special artifacts growing rusty in his treasury. 

Physical Stats: Before his transformation, Dan Feng physical abilities are greater than an average human. Presently, he is given an immortal body that heals almost instsntly even from the most fatal injuries. That being said, any physical abilities he had are further enhanced.

Longevity: On average, the Vidyadhara are able to live up to about 700 years before returning go the cycle. Unfortunately, Yaoshi has "blessed" Dan Feng to live beyond that and never return to becoming a pearl under his natural life expectancy.

Notes

Due to the nature of this verse, Dan Heng does not exist yet in main story. Because of Dan Feng immortality, he lived passed an average lifespan of a Vidydhara, and currently still lives. However, canon DH from the main story and/or AU Dan Heng are welcome to poke a grumpy old man.

The Discreet Gentleman's Connection by pluto (gayrights420) [Drarry, E, 80.4k] 🌼🔥 I had the absolute pleasure of beta-ing for this fic, so when I say it is amazing, it truly is just that. Fast burn on the smut via Floo sex, slow burn on the in-person falling in love. Satisfying in all the best possible ways.

2. A fic that made me laugh

AITA for being "obsessed" with my childhood nemesis? by @rainstormradish [Drarry, M, 4.3k] 🌼📲 Draco on a reddit forum is hilarious just on its own, but the banter and formatting really bring this fic to life. Amazingly creative, had me in stitches!

3. A comfort fic

The Eighth Tale by @letteredlettered [Drarry, E, 12.0k] 💔⏳ An oldie but a goodie. I constantly find myself coming back to this fic and having my mind blown every single time. Time travel timey-wimey angst.

4. A fic with art

Dating Draco - A Visual Game by @itsphantasmagoria [Drarry, M, Video Game] 🌼🎮 This is a fic in video game form!! Amazing art and lovely story where YOU get to make the choices for Drarry's happily ever after.

5. A favorite series

The Journal of Dreadful Things by @lilbeanz [Drarry, G, 112k, WIP] 🌼📖 Hilarious, witty, AND COMES WITH ART!! Lilbeanz draws and writes a wonderfully delightful series starting from Draco's First Year. His characterization had me in hysterics. Book 4 is starting soon!

Moonstruck by @prettyremus [Wolfstar, E, 3.8k] 🔥🐺 Found this gem while scrolling through the werewolf smut tag (don't judge me). I love the switch in dynamic with Sirius taming Remus's wolf through, ahem, rough sex.

7. An unreliable narrator fic

Sea of White by @dividawrites [Harrymort, E, 8.6k] 🔥🤍 Deliciously hot, creepy, and strangely sweet. Love their dynamic here, the unrestrained lust. Harrymort "die" and lose their memories, so, of course, then they bang.

8. A fic that made me cry

Far Apart, Far Away by @unmistakablyoatmeal [Hinny, minor Drarry, T, 1.6k] 💔💍 Infidelity angst has never been this good. I love the layers of emotion in this fic. Quick punchy sections that really pulled me in.

9. A Muggle(?) AU fic

Pleasant Hope by @ac1d6urn, @sinick [Snarry, E, 41.6k] 💔⛪️ Pastor Severus!! The angst, pining, and self-discovery in this fic is superb! I love the interwoven magic and detailed world-building of this little town.

The Last Trial of Peter Pettigrew by @sleepstxtic [Prongstail, M, 20.8k] 💔 🐀 Holy moly, this fic!!!! Is this my new favorite fic?? Possibly. The concept is brilliant, so creative and nuanced. The Peter character study using outsider perspectives is genius. Seamlessly balances canon and new scenes.

11. A pre-canon fic

Careless by @tax-onomic [Luther, E, 1.5k] 🔥🪞 Lucius/Arthur my beloved rare pair!! I am captain of the Luther ship, and Tax's fic hits all the right spots. The pining, the sniping, the prickly personalities with emotional vulnerability underneath! And all in the middle of a hot smut scene. Perfect.

12. A canon-compliant fic

Scottish by thepadfoots [Chedric, G, 749] 💔🌟 Lovely Cho character study focused around her Asian identity and the boy she loved.

13. A fic rated G

Lion-Hearted Girl by MinnieQuill (odainath) [Minmione, G, 4.5k] 💔🦁 I know the large age gap might scare some, but their relationship feels very organic in this fic. The setting is grim, but there is always hope in the darkness!

14. A fic rated T

You're So Vane by @patriceavril [Romelina, T, 6.8k] ��💄Romilda is so delightfully characterized, I was smiling through the entire fic. Angelina is the perfect foil (and love interest) to Romilda's attentions.

15. A rare pair fic (less than 2000 fics on AO3)

Snakeskin by @cntrl15 [Bellastoria, E, 3.7k] 🔥👠 Talk about a rare pair! Astoria/Bellatrix only has 2 tagged fics on AO3: this fic and the drabble I wrote based on it. But read this fic, and you'll see why I felt the need to write more in this universe.

Master of None by @nanneramma [Snormac, G, 5.5k] 🌼🧘 Severus is so wonderfully cranky, and Cormac is fine AF. The surprise pairing of 2023 that I never knew I needed and now I'm obsessed with!

17. An under-rated fic

Sun, Shadow, Shade by @naomijameston [Snuna, G, 700] 🌼☀️ Post-war fluff. Sunshine Luna is the perfect match for sullen Snape. A short and sweet fic for this underrated ship.

18. A canon-divergent fic

but somebody's gotta do it by nocturn [Pangulus, T, 920] 😄🧟‍♂️ This fic will make you say WTF but also huh, okay that totally works. The concept is WILD but Lyra executes it wonderfully. Pansy drags Regulus out of the inferni lake and they flirt a little while he gets de-corpsified lol.

19. A dark fic

In his embrace by @loneamaryllis [fem!Snarrymort, fem!Snarry, E, 48k] ⚡️👀 Dark and dirty but so so good. A Voldemort Wins AU where fem!Harry is taken as prisoner. Snape's mindset as he tries to save her (and is forced to rape her) is so twisted and mesmerizing. Mind the tags!

20. A thought-provoking fic

Icarus by @thistlecatfics [Millvansy, M, 20.0k] 💔🍾 War trauma, addiction, codependency! This fic is messy with emotions but has a strong, beating heart underneath. I am in love with Parvati as she deals with Pansy's addiction and Millicent's denial — three beautiful, imperfect girls.

21. A holiday fic

A Time, Dark and Divine by @moonflower-rose [Dronarry, E, 17.0k] 🔥⛱ HOLY FREAKING FUCK!! The sexual tension in this fic is off the freaking charts. Drarry seducing Ron while on vacation in Portugal. Sign me the fuck up!

Hi!! I just came across your Rita/Petunia ask and I loved it, and there is this one thing that you said near the end which made me realise why I've been loving your takes on these "unpopular" ships and that is that in HP love is enduring and always true and sth that cannot be broken (in essence) and I think it's very true and would even go a step further and say that there is a large portion of the fandom who treats ships the same way (because of how love is in the text?).

I'm in a lot of fandoms and HP is by far the one with the most "OTPs" aka ships which fandom treats as the one true thing which if you ship bars you from shipping the characters involved with it with anyone else. I am very very carefully not generalising lmao and also criticising very lightly — SALS and all that, this is more of me complaining about inconsequential things than genuine upset, but recently I've really been playing around with some "rare pair" wips and it kind of opened my mind to how much possibilty there is in this fandom.

I've always been a multishipper in other fandoms but ships in HP always felt so singular to me and their fanbases even more so. These are just ramblings of course, but anecdotally I was a part of a fest recently which was very much centred around HP rare pairs because of its nature and the fest had a discord server to go along with it which contained a channel for general ship discussions and it baffled me that there was barely any talk at all about rare pairs and ship dynamics — even for ships the people were writing! I get that people may be shy but even when a conversation would start it would quickly centre about One True Rare Ship which may have the majority of the fans at the moment.

I honestly don't know where this ask is going (and SO sorry for the length of it) but I just wanted you to say that your ship posts are absolutely brilliant and a breath of fresh air to see in the fandom (at least for me, who is stumbling in the dark trying to find multishipping mutuals).

i must admit that i don't really understand otp culture - in my view, the entire point of being in fandom [over being a fan of something] is to be audacious enough to treat the text [or film or series or whatever] and its characters as a springboard towards infinite possibilities, rather than to look at one ship or one character as unchanging, a museum exhibit behind glass.

[this is also why i'm not particularly tolerant of "he would not fucking say that" fandom complaints. no, maybe in canon he wouldn't... but if that was something we thought it was impossible to take a different spin on we wouldn't be doing this!]

not being a multi-shipper is - and i sincerely believe this - a skill issue. and practising this skill is incredibly fun.

i recommend it to everyone.

Day 27: A Muggle AU Fic

Of Bookshelves and Baby Carriers by poppunkpadfoot (Wolfstar, T, 11.8k)

The customer standing in front of him is quite possibly the most beautiful man Remus has ever seen. Like, he looks like a model or something. He has long, black hair, flattened by water, and just the slightest amount of scruff on his face, and… And a baby strapped to his chest. Okay.

This fic is cute AF! 😍 Doing a reread of this again made me squee about how Remus is such a precious cinnamon roll who needs more hugs, Harry is adorable, and Sirius' flirting is hilarious. So much flangst, this is a bookshop fic, and 1000% a pick-me-up if you need something to brighten your day. A+++ aka go read this ASAP!

Day 28: An Under-Rated Fic

Chimera by Literallyliterary (Flintbell, E, 11.5k)

Years after Hogwarts, years after the war, Katie Bell finds herself traded from the Harpies to the Tornados and into the hands of team captain Marcus Flint. It’s a lot easier to ignore a childhood crush when you have to take orders from him, right? …Right??

I always love a good Quidditch fic, and this one seriously delivers, especially with all the UST built up from Hogwarts days. The way Marcus and Katie push each other's buttons but are clearly attracted to each other is amazing, and there are just so many Feelings waiting to spill out, especially after they get physical. It's spicy, it's got that fiery Gryffindor-Slytherin relationship dynamic we all love, the mutual pining is for real, and the competitive streak is so alive. For the game, for a chance, and yeah, this was what really solidified my love for this rare pair when I first discovered them. Def give this a shot if you'd like to dip into new ships!

Day 29: A Post-Canon Fic

Winter, 1999. Harry thought going to New York would help him get his head on straight, but all he has to show for it are sore feet and a fridge full of takeaway containers. And now he’s homesick on top of everything else. It doesn’t help that his mysterious neighbour in 2C keeps cooking dishes that remind Harry of home and all the people he lost or left behind.

I adore fics that include anything senses or food related. And gosh, this one with the angst and food as a love language is gorgeous. The small details really makes this a story I can visually see. Also, Draco cooks! 'Nuff said. And the way Harry and Draco gradually fall in love is so heartwarming. It's on their own terms, in a different country. Love, love, love. Definitely a must-read for a sleepy or rainy day.

Day 31: A Fav Amongst Favs

Drowned Boy by bmouse (Marcus/Percy/Oliver, M, 4k)

Oliver wants to drown himself. Percy wants to study, but he's willing to be distracted. Marcus probably wants trouble, but it's hard to tell.

Sooo, PoA is my 2nd fav HP book, and any references to that Quidditch game where Oliver tries drowning himself in the shower or missing moments right after are gold. Marcus and Oliver banter at each other as usual, but then Percy gets tangled in their chaos, and it kind of escalates. They're all boys with hormones, and yeah. 😜 This fic is so well written where you can see the attraction between each of them, and the dynamics work. *chef's kiss* (And since I genuinely like to delve into character studies for Marcus, Percy and Oliver, this was the fic convinced me that they're an awesome triad. Hell yeah.)

October Autumn Round Masterlist

Totally aware this roundup is very late, but better to post now rather than never, right? October had a variety of flowery creations for different ships that deserve shout-outs. Do you respond to comments? I have been trying to be better about this more recently (since last year-ish) but now that I actually have regular weekly commenters, it can be hard haha. I've never had to deal with having so many comments before and I'm honestly so grateful. Love my readers ❤️

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I don't usually write angst tbh, but Absent Goodbye (AtLA) is about a character death so there's that.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? The first one that comes to mind is Confession x Revelation x Satisfaction because that one actually has an ending hahaha

Do you get hate on fics? Nah. I somehow manage to join fandoms way late, after any and all ship wars have died, or just at the right time when they are starting to get popular and people just want more content.

Do you write smut? Yup. Though I actually find explicit content a lot harder to write than fluff. Doesn't mean I wont try.

Craziest crossover: Gosh. Have I ever written a crossover fic? I don't think so. I think all the crossover stuff I've done has been strictly roleplay.

What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I have a really long Jet/Zuko High School AU fic that I doubt I will ever pick up again. I was so into it and had so many ideas for that fic when I was still rping in the AtLA fandom, but I've moved on for the most part and I'm not sure I could remember now what the end goal was for that fic or all the things I wanted to include. Which is sad but... it happens.

What are your writing strengths? I have been told that my character dialogue is very good, and I'm a really strong character-driven writer in general I think.

What are your writing weaknesses? Plot. Lol. Coming up with plot ideas is really difficult for me sometimes. And then when I do come up with an idea, they always seem to be novel length monstrosities. Writing one-shots, or anything I can actually finish within a week or so is just so fucking hard for me for some reason.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language? I'm always tempted to do this, but it does feel awkward at times, and as someone who is only fluent in English, I'm always afraid of getting things wrong.

First fandom you wrote in? The first fandom I wrote in was YYH, but that’s not the first fandom I published fic for. I kept a lot of my writing private for many years.

Favorite fic you’ve written? Oh lord. This is such a hard question. If we're talking fics that I wrote myself as a single author, I would have to say I'm really proud of Confession x Revelation x Satisfaction (HxH), Breathing Fire (YYH), and Shower, Interrupted (DRRR). But I am also completely obsessed with the long-running rps I have right now with people, and some of those get published on Ao3 as well.

Smut!! I've developed my smut writing a lot. Kinktober really opened my eyes to a lot of kinks as well 👀

Tone: I think I'm getting a lot better at matching tone in my writing for consistent characterizations and building atmosphere

Estimating word count: I've gotten so much better at looking at an idea and predicting how long the final story is going to be.

FINISH A LONGER WORK!! This was on my resolutions from last which I didn't complete lol. It's okay, I'll try again this year.

Harry Potter has a tiny dick. It’s just a fact of life. The Chosen Microdick, the Small Saviour, the Boy with an Itty Bitty Package. And oh, how Draco loves it.
