Author’s Note: just impulsively wrote this and am posting it promptly after writing so it has not been edited. Besties im down bad about this sarcastic basterd (also if anyone wants a nsfw part 2...i am willing to provide) (or any other requests for him and Alcina, my favorite bi panic people rn)

Summary: You run into Ethan in Castle Dimitrescu on your way back to the factory.

Ethan Winters genuinely just wanted his daughter back. He was so sick and tired of going through this village in an attempt to save her, running into every possible inconvenience he could find and knowing that he would probably lose fingers fighting them.

Castle Dimitrescu was vast and regal. He might have liked it if he wasn’t running for his and his daughters' lives from the four vampires that lived there.

He was crouched down, holding a gun up as he walked very quietly and carefully throughout the house so as to not alert any of the Dimitrescu daughters. He opened one of the unlocked doors carefully and immediately stopped moving at the sight of someone.

You wore no cloak, to signify that you were a daughter and you were much shorter than the lady of the house. You grabbed one of the lipsticks that Alicna had plenty of and leaned over the vanity to see how it looked on you.

Ethan stood up and held the gun up to your head. You raised an eyebrow, looking at him from the mirror reflection.

“Who are you?” he asked, voice rough. Rougher than his face looked. You put on the lipstick and then rubbed your lips together.

“Do you think this is my color?” He shoved the gun further into your head and you scoffed. “Fine fine. Not one for makeup eh?” You put your hands up and turned around. He let you sit down on the vanity but not without his gun still pointing at your skull. You seemed unphased which would have been weird if Ethan wasn’t incredibly desensitized to everything ever.

“Who are you? Are you one of the vampires? One of the other family members? Who are you?!” You put your hands slowly down on your lap. He let you, but you were testing his patience.

“Not quite.” You gestured to him. “I’m human. Like you. Well not like you, I’m completely human, no mutations or anything done.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” he hissed. You waved him off.

“If you hurt me, you will have Karl on your head and I imagine it won’t be pretty. It’s the only way I can get from Castle to Castle unharmed,” you told him.

“Karl?”

“You know, fun hat, frizzy hair, has that big hammer thing. Karl.”

“Heisenberg?” You nodded.

“Yes Ethan, I thought you were smarter than this.” Ethan shook his head quickly and then regained focus, his hand holding the gun shaking a bit.

“Where’s Rose?” You shrugged.

“Fuck if I know Ethan Winters. I’m just the person who lives in a factory and becomes a nuisance for each and every Lord.” He jabbed the gun at your head and you didn’t even flinch.

“You’re lying.”

“Truthfully, I am not. If I knew where Rose was I would at least give you a hint, just to make it interesting.”

“What is Heisenberg to you?” he asked. You smiled a bit, crossing your legs.

“I’m Heisenberg's...girlfriend for lack of a better word. Whatever Mia was to you.” His mind flashed back to Mia. He had barely been able to mourn her. He shook the thought out of his head.

“You know how to get out of here and get Rose yes?”

“I know how to get out of here. How to get Rose, I have no idea. We’ve been over this.”

“But Heisenberg knows and if I can bring you to him, he can tell me.” You shook your head gently.

“Ethan sweetie...I could call for Alcina or the girls at any time and they would be in here in seconds to tear you to pieces.”

“Not before I could pull this trigger.”

“Again, if you so much as scratch me, you’ll never breath non metal infused air again.” Ethan shook his head gently and took a deep breath. He grabbed the gun at you again. He was silent and then he lowered it.

“I’ll just be going then,” he muttered, defeated. You nodded pleasantly and stood up from sitting on the vanity. You put the lipstick back on it. You walked forward and put your hand on Ethan’s shoulder. He looked you in the eyes.

“Good luck Ethan Winters.” You started to leave but turned to him. “I do suggest that in order to save your daughter you don’t kill Alicna’s in the process.”

“Any bits of advice then?” You put your hand on the doorknob and turned it, opening it just a tad.

“Grab the masks for the main room. Do you have a map?” He handed it to you, a tattered old piece of paper. You grabbed the lipstick again and marked some places. “Avoid hurting them as much as you can.”

“Why are you helping me?”

“I don’t like Mother Miranda. I don’t trust Mother Miranda. She is the one who has your daughter I’m sure or she must know where she is. But the Dimitrescus and Karl...even Donna for that matter, are people I like and trust.”

You stepped back outside the room.

“If I hear you’ve killed any of the daughters, I’ll tell them what I know of you. If you think the Dimitrescus are scary, just wait until you meet Donna.”

You shut the door in his face. Ethan shivered.

You walked up the stairs to the second floor. You knocked on the door of Alcinas room and she swang it open. She took a sigh of relief.

“Thank God. I thought you were Ethan Winters.”

“You think Ethan would knock before coming in?” She scoffed. You held her the lipstick you were wearing.

“Where did you find that?”

“Downstairs where I ran into Ethan,” you said honestly. Her eyes went wide and her lips pursed in annoyance.

“Did you see the girls?”

“No but I’m sure one of them ran into him as he left the room. He was only there a couple of minutes ago, it shouldn't be that hard to find him.” She walked past you without saying goodbye. You huffed. “You’re welcome!”

You made it back to the factory in just a couple of minutes. You had gotten so used to the walk that you were on autopilot the whole time before you were back to your room. Karl was already there, clearly taking a quick break before returning to his never ending work day.

“Where did you go?!” he asked, walking up to you from the bathroom. He put his hand on your arm and you grabbed his glasses which were hanging from his shirt. He had shed the jacket and hat, clearly about to shower.

“Relax, I was just at Alcinas castle,” you told him gently. He let out an annoyed exaggerated sigh that you knew all too well.

“How is my sister?” he asked. You took the lipstick out of your pocket. Alcina hadn’t actually taken it in her fit of rage to go and get Ethan. Now you had something extra for your own personal vanity back at the factory.

“Shy of one more lipstick.” You walked past him into the bathroom. He followed you as you placed it carefully on your vanity. You admired it for a second with a smile on your face. You wrapped an arm around yourself and turned back to him. You hoisted yourself onto the bathroom counter. “I ran into Ethan Winters.”

His face, which had been admiring your new addition to the vanity which was full of stolen things and things he had acquired for you, turned sour. Karl put his hand on your arm and raised it, checking your side and arm for injuries.

“I told you not to leave the room until he was caught,” he grumbled. He was trying to act like he hadn’t been worried about you from the second he realized you were gone. He was trying to ignore the fact that he himself almost stomped to each of the Lord’s castles to make sure you were alright. He didn’t want you to run into Ethan Winters, that was his worst nightmare. Ethan didn’t have any regard for you. Ethan just wanted Rose. “Are you hurt?” You shook your head.

“No. He asked me if I knew where Rose was and held a gun to my head but in the end we parted ways peacefully.”

“You could have brought him back here,” he muttered.

“I told Alcina where he was. I figured she could take care of him. You already had your shot.” He rolled his eyes and his grip on your arm tightened.

“You could have been seriously hurt. The Lord’s won’t hurt you but Mother Miranda might, Ethan might have.” You brought your free hand up to his cheek and leaned forward so your lips were just barely brushing over his.

“I can take care of myself.” He pressed a harsh kiss against your lips and made a low groaning noise. He let go of your arm to grab your leg and part them so that he could stand between your thighs. He dipped his head to kiss you and you pressed your body against him, feeling every inch of his breathing.

There was a harsh rasp at the door and he pulled away. You grabbed his neck and shook his head, kissing his jaw and peppering kisses down his neck.

“Come on, Mother Miranda doesn’t need you that bad,” you whispered. You pressed a long kiss to his jaw again and he had to physically tear himself away, however much it pained him.

“She might,” he grumbled. You held him until he moved too far away for you to. You groaned and put your head against the wall beside the mirror.

“Maybe I should go and find Ethan Winters again to finish the job. I mean he may only have eight fingers but he’s stayed alive this long and-” He grabbed your arm that was waving around as you spoke and looked you dead in the eyes.

“I will finish the job. You just sit tight kitten.” You kissed his knuckles and then let him go.

“Better be quick Karl. I get very restless very easily.”

He put on his hat and coat (the opposite of either of you wanted in the moment) and slammed the door in frustration against Mother Miranda behind him.

You took a deep breath and hoped he wouldn’t be gone too long.

Haikyuu fanfic recs for ones I liked hehe

Anyway, as the title suggests, I am recommending some fanfics for popular(ish) ships that I personally really enjoyed! I’m only doing one or two fics per ship (which in hindsight is KILLING me so I’m just putting the first fics I find and am like I really liked that one LOL) because I wanted to do a shorter fic rec list (tho watch this become super long LOL). I also may or may not be procrastinating finishing a couple other long posts, so there’s that hehe. For the (kinda but not really) public consensus for best fics per ship (by kudo count) check out some of my other posts. Also I’m putting some ships I don’t actually read much of (OOPS LOL) so if you think that there’s a fic that fits my type (if I even have a consistent type) better, pls tell me LOL. Otherwise, pls continue heh :)

As always, pls check WARNINGS, TAGS, and SUMMARIES for fics before reading to make sure you’re taking care of yourselves (since mental health is key!) and stay healthy!

IwaOI:

The Loyalty of a Traitor by DeathBelle (E) 76.9k // ok so does me liking this fic make me basic cause I feel basic LOL. I really love mafia fics, and the way the story line developed was SO good, like IN LOVE with this story. This is a fic where you should read WARNINGS, TAGS, and SUMMARY before diving in, but if the length scares you, don’t be. It’s so easy to fall in and get lost in the writing!

the courtship ritual of the hercules beetle by kittebasu (chanyeol) (T) 66.3k // again, basic? Probably LOL but it’s good so I have no shame ;) Again, pls don’t let the word count scare you (cause it scared me LOL), you get really into it after like 2 paragraphs, so just make sure you have enough time to finish hehe.

KuroKen:

Thicker Than Blood by kylar (M) 91.4k // are you surprised that there is another mafia one? You really shouldn’t be LOL. Anyway, I’ll just be here pushing my mafia fanfic agenda while you read this monster of a fic hehe :) Definitely read WARNINGS, TAGS, and SUMMARY because there is some very sensitive topics involved! I also adore the oibokuroo friendship headcannon, so more reasons to read, right?

Liked, Commented and Subscribed by Royal Society of Pandas (Abarcelos) (T) 45.7k // this fic is SO funny omg. I read it and I had to stop so many times just to laugh because I could not stop sometimes LOL. However, there IS angst towards the end, it gets resolved, but it’s still there... But honestly, it just adds such depth and flavor to the fic, so pls read it!

BokuAka:

bang! now we're even by Authoress (M) 11.9k // so I’ll be honest, I don’t read a lot of BokuAka (...oops?) and so I wouldn’t consider myself as the best person to be recommending fics for this ship (in general too LOL).... ANyway, I love myself some good spy AUs (was gonna put that IwaOi spy AU but the LIMIT), and Akaashi in a dress? Like the tags might state, what more do you need? The characters are done beautifully, and the story development is SO good, so I give you all my humble BokuAka rec.

Crisis Converted by valiantarmor (M) 60k // man do I really love fighting in my fics LOL. This was super good and the plot itself kept me really engaged (what a twist omg). It does talk a bit about mental health issues, but it’s done so well, and they really did this AU justice!

DaiSuga:

How to Manage by SuggestiveScribe (E) 39.3k // ok so yea yea we established, I’m basic, BUT can you blame me? This might’ve been one of the first DaiSuga’s I’ve read and I have no regrets. Literally, this fic series is one of my favorites, so OF COURSE I had to add it somewhere :D Honestly, I don’t even think you need to read the first one to understand what’s going on, but I would just cause it has some funny DaiSuga moments too ;) This is explicit for PWP, so proceed with caution~~

Add New Contact by booksong (G) 8.5k // this one! It’s so cute and poor Daichi LOL. He really out here doing the most,,, Anyway, we love tech Suga, and a nice dash of snarky tsukki (LOL is he salt, yes yes he is). It’s very fluff and pine, so if you want to read Daichi having gay panic like 24/7, go right ahead LOL.

SakuAtsu:

Burden of Blame by DeathBelle (E) 91.2k // ummmm, haha what, another mafia AU? Me, predictable? Noooo, never..... Anyway, this one was so freakin’ good like, love it so much! It’s one of my favorite mafia AU fics, and I love the story line progression. Poor Atsumu being dragged into this mess, but it’s okay because THEY are IN LOVE. Honestly, this fic is Atsumu best boy like he is the best boy. BEST BOY.

Notte Stellata by awkwardedgeworth (T) 20.9k // I ignored all of the other fics I LOVE in this ship (like the pain I’m in rn), but I love this fic with my whole heart. Like I have reread this fic multiple multiple times because I love it so much (tho I might’ve skipped the angst a couple of times cause I didn’t want the pain okay?). I keep coming back, and the second fic in this series is SO funny and cute and I love it here. Please read it, it’s so FREAKING good, angst and ALL.

KyouHaba:

Team Mom by All_My_Characters_Are_Dead (T) 2.7k // so as I was going through this tag (because that’s what I do LOL), I remembered this fic and I love it. Like yes Yahaba is the fear factor and yes Kyoutani is the DAD. I really like the team dynamics in this one, and the first years make me laugh pls.

Camellias by kiyala (T) 1.9k // IK you’re all like, you’re missing such great fics, like no I’m not I just made myself hate myself by limiting fics to two per,,, I love this fic and when I starting looking for this ship, it was the first one I thought of hehe. I really love magic and their interactions are so cute and the PLANTS ARE DOING THE MOST. Pls read both in the series, cause domestic KyouHaba is best KyouHaba ngl LOL. I love the plants, and if you read the second one, someone tell the trees to stop bullying Yahaba.

MatsuHana:

This gets annoying fast, Makki by Ink_stained_quills (G) 2.3k // IM IN LOVE WITH THIS FIC PLS I COULD NOT STOP CRYING TEARS OF LAUGHTER. This AU needs more fics PLEASE. It was SO freakin’ funny and the other teams KILLED ME. Like how they all approached the problem differently and how some of them (KUROO) asked for help LOL. Please this is so freaking funny go read it.

boiled frogs by reginagalaxia (E) 91.5k // I told myself I was gonna put my most angsty fics on another post (which I will for my other favorite MatsuHana angst fic which I love), but this fic. Omg I saw it and I was like I have to. Literally I have to. I hate angst, but read it. It, the, plot, omg, I jjfnsfknalkjdnf ljksan. Like I’m not sure you understand. This fic. asjfjfsadnldjb. I never thought I could hate a character SO MUCH,,,, like SO MUCH. READ TAGS, WARNINGS, AND SUMMARIES because some serious stuff really goes down. Bless Iwa-chan.

SunaOsa:

Accidentally in Love by pancake_surprise (T) 19.6k // JOSE CUERVO strikes. I love this fic and all the chaos in it. The way they were supposed to be the responsible couple (of friends LOL),,, sike. This one is only a slight angst and it’s mostly love and fun :) Also technically this is no longer the first fic in the series, but I’m still putting this one cause the other one is SakuAtsu orientated hehe :)

Spring Secrets by DeathBelle (T) 3.8k // Seasons might be one of my favorite (as all things also seem to be) series of all times. I don’t like rerecommending fics I’ve already said to read, which is why I’m not yelling at you to go read a certain other fic (which is my life and blood). Anyway, this fic series is all fluff barely angst (maybe that’s why I like it) but it’s so freakin good pls read it all ahhhhhh.

Komori/Suna (what is their ship name):

I wish to live in a world by hatsuna (T) 24.8k // ok ngl this fic was so sad and relatable? Like I was like wtf why are you making me cry rn even though like I shouldn’t be? My heart? Pain. (Hotel? Trivago.) Technically, this is END GAME but the main pairing is kinda SakuAtsu???? Something of the sort, but also their relationship (Komori and Sakusa) is written so well and idk guys I think you need to read this fic rn.

Ah the two fic limit hurt me, but fear not I am making ship specific rec posts (LOL I’m so dramatic), so if you wanted more of a ship,,,, its a coming hehe. And yes I did say I’m making an angsty fic rec post, but we’ll see if it gets finished before I side-track with posts like these LOL.

I saw that you had match ups open and wanted to send one in! I've only done this onve before so I'm a bit new on this whole thing lol.

I'd love an encanto match up as I recently saw the movie and love the fandom rn!

Anyway! I am an 22 year old male (fine with any gender match up), very short as in 5'3" and I am an albino! I have the usual white hair, pale skin and blueish-purple eyes. I am not very confident with my looks so I often make it up with humor. (Coping with humor go brr). I am an artist and love to draw on computer, traditionally or with paints. I often lean into an fantasy animal/enchanted forest vibe with my art!

I am a pretty shy guy at first but I can be a little shy and cold at first but after warming up to people I can be warm and often the dad friend. I am an introvert so I do require lots of time alone. I have really bad adhd and often can be overstimulated by large crowds or loud sounds so I prefer to spend time in smaller groups or even just on your phone or reading with friends.

As I said I have adhd and I am really bad at remembering things and the worst with timed events. I am very creative but simple things, like cooking or cleaning, can be hard for me to underestand or start on. I currently study plant biology and I am very into animal biology, especially birds! I like forests and photographing animals. I like collecting small trinkets from rocks to twigs, even some animal bones once in a while. I just think they're neat. I can often ramble on about things I like and I know it can be annoying, I just can shut up if I am asked about something I love.

Also I have hard time deciphering my own emotions and can often confuse one emotion for another. Same can be with other people. I might confuse someones short, one worded awnser as them being angry at me. It brings me lot's of anxiety but I'm thankfully starting to learn emotions better woth help!

I would call Agustín a solid ambivert. He doesn't mind if you'd rather stay away from the party, though he has a tendency to get caught up in it himself, often through no means of his own. (He just gets asked to help a lot and he doesn't like to say no.) However, when he has the time (often after the party starts settles down), he'll come plop next to you, smile, and ask you how your party went, referring, of course, to literally whatever you were doing.

If you ever ask him to stay with you instead of hanging out at the party, then the party is dead. He's spending alone time with his bf, abuela, go away!!

(No idea where this came from, but he will gently stroke your hair all of the time. The man is the epitome of gentle and soft.)

He will often just give you a gentle smile when you cope with humor. May offer a little joke in return if he's feeling it. When it's important to face something seriously, he will gently guide you in that direction, but he does not insist. He doesn't judge. He's just very sweet, okay ;-;

He loves your art. And not just the skill that goes into it, but the subject, too! Really likes that soft, magical feel. Will stand in front of your art and gently stroke his chin as he admires it like he's at a whole ass art gallery. Gives surprisingly good suggestions if you ever ask for constructive criticism, as well as deeply thought out compliments. This man knows art theory. How? Well that's just his little secret, isn't it? ;)

Just kidding!! It's because he also likes to draw and paint! He hasn't pursued that hobby in a while (mostly just sticking to sketches and doodles in a little journal in recent years) but once he starts hanging out with you, he might be inclined to bring out the old paintbrush and canvas. He'd like to sit and paint right next to you if you'll allow it of course!

PLEASE note the man is accident-prone to the extreme. For your painting's safety, keep it a minimum of five feet away from him, or it'll end up smudged on the floor. He is sorry. Half of his own paintings end up that way too (He actually started giving up on restarting and now just adds the mistake into his style! It makes for very unique and beautiful work!)

He cannot help you with being late. That's just your own form of accident prone, and he relates. You're more likely to both start being late. Oops. At the very least, I can confidently say he won't feel bad if you forget an important event like an anniversary or birthday. He'll just gently remind you and happily chuckle as you go 'oh shit!' Fully aware that that is a love language of it's own. You can just have a dinner in, and he'll love it just the same.

When executive dysfunction gets you down, this man becomes a one man pep team. So insistent, but in a soft and encouraging way.

"You can do it! Come on, amor, I believe in you! We can do it together!"

If you're really struggling he'll do one of two things depending on your mood. A - literally pick you up and heft you to your feet, physically encouraging you in the right direction. Bless.

Or B, if you're really upset and struggling, he'll snuggle in beside you wherever you are laying/sitting and gently nuzzle into you, asking what's wrong/do you want to talk. Either way, he will get you some agua fresca, imminently. You ain't getting dehydrated on his watch 😤 Self-care king.

I dare you to infodump at him. I dare you. I need you to see him melt into a puddle of admiration, chin in his hands, gazing up at you like you're the stars. I need you to. He probably won't say much, but don't stop, he likes hearing you talk about things you love, so much.

As someone who also has ADHD I am aware you can infodump about someone you love as well, so I am double daring you to infodump to someone else about him. He'll melt into a blushing puddle. Literally puts his face in his hands. Cutie.

Speaking of, did you see the way this man reacted to a fucking jaguar running straight at him?? I don't care if Antonio can talk to animals, he didn't even flinch, there's no way he doesn't adore animals as much as you do. He will gladly go bird-watching with you. I imagine it's already a bit of a hobby for him :)

He brings you rocks for your collection. Every single one of them is literally just a normal rock, except for the one time he brings you a feather, which is not part of the collection you showed him, but he thought you would like it. *shrug*

This man respects /srs ideology to the extreme. If you ask him to clarify what he means, there is a 0% chance of fuckery. He will tell you, even if it's negative, and if it is negative, he will be very gentle about it. He says these things in a way that promotes communication and mutual problem-solving. 10/10. That waistcoat is made of husband material.

In summary, you have yourself the gentlest, sweetest partner who is patient and understanding, and he has himself a kind and loving boyfriend who encourages his hobbies and hopefully forgives him for the 3000 accidents he commits a day. Very dads, much kindness. We stan <3

Hello unforth! Thank you for your wonderful blog, and the the untamed art blog!! I followed you years ago for destiel, and you were one of the people that got me into the untamed. I watched it last summer and have been binging various cdramas ever since!! I had a question for you about reading. After watching the untamed I read the novel, and didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I think you’re someone who prefers the show, but if not, sorry if I’m remembering wrong… hoping you understand. I want to try reading other novels but I found the romance in mdzs to be kinda off. I guess I’m wondering if you have a recommendation for the best novel you’ve read so far? It would be great if it’s one with fanfic but if not I’m still curious to try! I hope this didn’t come off as rude about the untamed, it’s just a personal preference. Thanks in advance, and thanks again for all your work in fandom!

You have not misremembered, I definitely prefer the Untamed to the novel of MDZS (and I'm with you, no shade on people with different preferences, of course!). I also didn't enjoy the novel of MDZS as much as I thought I would, though I think some of that was because I read the Exiled Rebels Scanalations translation which - again, no shade, translating that was a HUGE job and kudos to them - but I do here from native speakers that some questionable translation choices were made, which can detract from some people's enjoyment of the novel (and can enhance other people's, it just depends how those translation choices relate to each person's personal likes and dislikes).

Now, I can tell you what I've read and what I've thought of each one, happily - I don't know what turned you off about MDZS specifically, beyond an aspect of the relationship dynamic, so it'll be hard for me to say which of these might appeal to you more? But, here's a list of which danmei novels I've read, and my opinion. The list is shorter than you'd think - danmei novels are long and I read slow, lol.

Note that all of these end happy, for various definitions of "happy," and the main ship is canon in all of them. Also note that I tried to avoid spoilers, but sometimes it's hard to even talk about the ship dynamic without some mild spoilers.

These are (roughly) in the order I've read them; I just finished the last a few days ago. All art is by the official artists, but I'm not always sure what their names are, sorry - I've tried to figure them out for my art blogs but it's REALLY hard.

1. Mo Dao Zu Shi, by MXTX.

(since I'm writing this post for you, and you're already familiar with it, I'm not putting in TW and plot)

My take: I figure knowing my opinion of MDZS will help you assess all this? There are things I loved about MDZS, including the book, but MDZS is still obviously trying to figure out pacing. Whereas in SVSSS, the storyline doesn't always flow that smoothly and the ending is rushed, in MDZS in my opinion the biggest issue is that she clearly didn't plan some things ahead. For example, Miangmian and Wen Ning are both introduced within a few pages of when they'll be needed to Do Shit. It shows that she hadn't quite worked everything out as she was going, and every once in a while was like, "shit shit I need a character for this thing" and hastily added them. The plot itself is better paced, though, though I could have wished for a less talky denouement. When it was the only one I read, I also often thought, "this author doesn't understand consent," and, "this author has kinks I don't share." Now that I've read all three of her books, I completely retract the first one. MXTX absolutely understands consent, and was intentionally playing with it in MDZS. Not sure if the evidence of that got lost in translation, or what, but...yeah.

Relationship Dynamic: ...the second of those opinions, I still kinda feel. The consensual non-con is just not really my thing, like I'm okay with it in small doses? And I don't love some aspects of Lan Wangji's domineering attitudes and Wei Wuxian's act of bare tolerating it. And don't get me wrong, now that I'm more familiar with her work, I think it was an intentional writing choice and I also think they're both largely roleplaying it a lot of the time...but I still don't personally enjoy it much.

2. Scum Villain Self-Saving System, by MXTX.

Genre: modern transmigration into a fantasy xianxia world.

Where to find it: English translation by BC Novels | donghua season 1

Trigger warnings for: graphic descriptions of suffering, non-con of the "fuck or die" variety, and body horror...I can't think of anything else rn?)

Plot: SVSSS is MXTX's first novel, and is a satire of classic stag harem novels. Shen Yuan, the protagonist and half the main ship, is reading a serialized web novel by "Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky" about a demon named Luo Binghe who has a harem of over 3,000 women and has done all kinds of ghastly awful things. He hates this novel but has read all, like, 3 million words of it or something, and trolls every chapter...until one gets him so angry that he dies...and then he wakes up in the book right around when the book starts, in the body of one of the early antagonists, a cultivator named Shen Qingqiu who abuses a young, innocent Luo Binghe physically and emotionally and, ultimately, is horribly tortured to death. Shen Yuan, in Shen Qingqiu's body, thus sets out to not be horribly tortured to death by Luo Binghe. Hijinks ensue.

My Take: In terms of my opinion of it...SVSSS secured for me that MXTX is a much more brilliant author than I thought when I'd only read MDZS. She understands tropes and subverts them brilliantly throughout the story, and from a writing standpoint, I was impressed with her. However, from a plot standpoint...she's got all the ideas but hasn't, imo, yet figured out how exactly to bring them all together. The pacing is off at times, and the ending felt abrupt to me. It's also the only danmei I've read where I ship a side ship more than the primary one (which is, of course, Shen Yuan (as Shen Qingqiu)/Luo Binghe. (also, oops...I read SVSSS after TGCF and just put them in the wrong order, oh well, not gonna change it now.)

Relationship Dynamic: In terms of relationship weirdness...it's hard to sort in that regard, because, like, it's supposed to be weird? I think it's a really interest book but I'm not sure I'd recommend it in your situation. Bingqiu's main dynamic is...uh...tolerance and obsession? They're kinda hard to describe. Shen Yuan often seems like he's just kinda putting up with Luo Binghe, whereas Luo Binghe is...god. So hard to describe, lmao. He's a big clumsy ox in a museum full of porcelain dishes and he really, really loves his Shizun. (also note that Shen Qingqiu is Luo Binghe's teacher. They don't get together until after they're not master/student, but if that's not your thing, another reason to avoid.)

3. Tian Guan Ci Fu, by MXTX.

Genre: historical China (loosely), xianxia (note that I'm still figuring out exactly how stuff gets classified so sorry if I get one wrong, but I think I kinda get it???)

Where to Access It: English Translation by the astonishing yummysuika | manhua (this is an official translation by Bilibili! It's a few chapters behind the actual release, but still...) | donghua season 1 is on Netflix | a live action adaptation is juuuuust getting started on script reading and filing

Trigger warnings for: MCD, temporary MCD, body horror, graphic violence, epic levels of mind fuckery, uh...genocide?...again, racism/colorism, probably other stuff, sorry, I can't take as long as I'd like to for this post so I'm not being as thorough as I oughta be.

Plot: TGCF is about Xie Lian, an 800 year old man, and it commences at the moment when, unexpectedly, he ascends to godhood...for the third time. Unfortunately, when he ascends, he accidentally does some damage in Heaven, and he has to repay that, so he gets sent back to earth to deal with a ghost who's been causing some problems. Hijinks ensue...and then fucktons of angst ensue...then more hijinks...then more angst...and basically it broke my heart like four times and I am grateful for it every day? The main ship is Xie Lian and a ghost named Hua Cheng, but it's hard to even talk about without some spoilers because of some identity shenanigans. (they're VERY mildly identity shenanigans, but still).

My Take: So, you asked what my favorite of the danmei novels I've read is? It's TGCF. TGCF is one of my favorite novels ever, and it has a growing fandom, a donghua that's on Netflix, and a live action that's just starting to film. TGCF is the culmination of the skills MXTX developed through her first two works, imo. She clearly plotted it out all from the start, and while Book 1 especially often seems kind of random - lots of elements are introduced and then kinda...apparently...forgotten? And never explained? But she actually DOES bring it ALL together and it's flat-out masterful. I'm a big fan, obviously.

Relationship Dynamic: it again depends on your preferences and what you didn't like about MDZS, and there's no way to talk about it without spoilers, so consider yourselves warned. Xie Lian ascended to godhood first at the age of 17, and right around then he also saved the life of a 10 year old boy...and that boy is Hua Cheng. Hua Cheng is a follower of Xie Lian's, in that Xie Lian is literally a god, and Hua Cheng is literally one of his followers. However, they're separated for almost 800 years, so the age difference is largely irrelevant, and while some people complain about Hua Cheng's behavior being stalkery and obsessive, I honestly think they're dead wrong. It's more like when you read a celebrity/fan AU, and it starts weird, and then they really genuinely fall in love. Like, the fan may have been in love the whole time, and how they felt about the celebrity before they really met might feel slightly ooky, but it's how they act AFTER they meet their idol that matters more, and...yeah, Hua Cheng is great, they're both great, antis fight me. Xie Lian is easily one of my favorite characters EVER, he is all my favorite tropes in one horribly, wonderfully fucked up martyristic idealistic sweet kind laid back package. I would kill for him, lmao. In terms of their relationship dynamic...they love and respect each other? There's really nothing that weird about it other than the aspects of the "fan" Hua Cheng that get revealed over time - and he's always terrified that when Xie Lian realizes what a fanboy he was, Xie Lian will be upset or disgusted, but of course Xie Lian never is. They adore each other. It's glorious. Highly recommend. :D There's also no explicit content in TGCF (unlike MXTX's other two books).

4. The Husky and His White Cat Shizun (aka 2ha) by Meatbun Doesn't Eat Meat.

Genre: original world, xianxia, time travel, dimension hopping, it's so many things, 2ha is so hard to describe lmao

Where to Access it: English Translation by the amazing yummysuika (things are complicated, though, and it's not finished) | a manhua is in the works and should be out this year | a live action called "Hao Yixing" or "Immortality" is already filmed and could theoretically air literally any time cause it's completely ready, but when will it actually come? Who knows!

Trigger warnings: all of them. Literally. MCD, temporary MCD, murder, suicide, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, rape/non-con, abuse, manipulation, gas lighting, torture, graphic violence, body horror, literal graphic onscreen horrible blood murder of a small child (I had to skip that chapter), teacher/student relationship sort of but not exactly, probably other stuff, this book is dark as fuck, and a lot of these tags apply to behavior of one half of the main ship toward the other, but...it's complicated, and there are reasons things happen, and those reasons aren't "well they're just a bad person."

Plot: This is another one that's hard to describe because there's sooooo much mind fuckery going on, but I'll try. 2ha is about Mo Ran, who rises to be the Emperor of the World, Taxian Jun, but slaughtering all who oppose him...and who is so miserable that he commits suicide, only to wake up in his 16 year old body. This is pretty much perfect from Mo Ran's point of view, because he's gone back so far that the love of his life, his fellow disciple Shi Mei, is still alive. He has a chance to fix everything that went wrong, starting with preventing his awful evil Shizun, Chu Wanning, from letting Shi Mei die.

Spoilers: the main ship in this book is Mo Ran/Chu Wanning.

Hijinks do NOT ensue. There are no hijinks in 2ha. It is all pain all the time (but I swear it ends happy).

My Take: ...well, from a structural standpoint there are some pacing issues. The book is incredibly long (over 300 chapters, over 1 million words) and there are definitely some chunks that could just be excised and it'd still be fine. However, other than that, it's pretty amazing and absolutely masterful how it's plotted. As a reader you'll spend 100+ chapters thinking you know what's going on, and who the good guys are, and who the bad guys are, and how they relate to each other...and then Meatbun starts in on revealing what's ACTUALLY going on and she then spends 200 chapters repeatedly punching you in the face! Like, I went in knowing a LOT of spoilers, because the tags were so dark that I felt that for my mental health it was important I have a general idea what was going on, and I STILL ended up sobbing my eyes out (and I am NOT an easy crier and don't usually cry at books) over something I knew was coming.

Relationship Dynamic: That's about the only thing that the title accurately conveys about this book. "The Husky and His White Cat Shizun," sounds so soft and fluffy, right? That's how they get you, ha. But, Mo Ran is absolutely a big dumb husky who wants to do the right thing (well, sometimes he does) but just completely fails depressingly often. When he sees someone he likes come in the front door he WILL jump all over them and bark in their face as his way of trying to communicate affection. And Chu Wanning is equally absolutely a cat. He is emotionally constipated, poor at expressing himself, uptight, touch starved, desperate for affection, and so lonely my chest hurts when I think about him. And for how they relate to each other...well, picture that big dog greeting a loved one at the door...except that loved one is the most hide-bound proud white cat you can imagine.

That's their dynamic.

(However, also...there are multiple timelines at play, and Taxian Jun does some truly awful things to "his" Chu Wanning in the original timeline, and many of these things are graphically described, and while it's ultimately all explained, it still all HAPPENS, so if you're going to have trouble reading fucktons of abuse between the main ship, I would not recommend this book)

5. Thousand Autumns (Qianqiu) by Meng Xi Shi.

Genre: historical China (like, references actual people, as far as I can tell), xianxia

Where to Access it: ...reading Thousand Autumns is HARD, it's split over like four websites/translators. This Carrd can kinda help? I can get you the rest if you want | donghua season 1 | I heard there's a live action in the works? But I don't know more than that.

Trigger warnings: graphic violence, mentions/threats of sexual violence (but it's all stopped before things really go wrong), starvation, description of child death (from starvation), near-death, emotional/mental abuse, major semi-permanent character injury, god, minor character death, they're major characters depending on your pov, I can't actually think of others, after writing about 2ha it feels positively fluffy). Note that there's not really any explicit content, just implications of smut, and not til basically the very end and extras.

Plot: Yan Wushi, sect leader of a demonic sect, has just come out of an extended seclusion to improve his cultivation when he and one of his disciples come across a man who is wounded to the point of near death. This turns out to be Shen Qiao, the sect leader of Mount Xuandu. When Shen Qiao awakens from his wounds, he's lost his memory, AND he's blind, and Yan Wushi decides it would be great fun and an excellent use of his time to fuck with Shen Qiao by trying to turn him evil - because Yan Wushi is certain that ALL people are inherently evil, and shattering Shen Qiao's veneer of righteousness will just help prove that.

Spoilers: it's not a veneer.

Not spoilers: Not many hijinks ensue, but there are a few hijinks, and even when it's not hijinxed, it's still not that painful...usually.

My Take: despite that synopsis, a lot of the plot of Thousand Autumns is actually political, and I like political plots, so I liked that aspect of it. However, it has some serious pacing issues imo, and it's also hard to read in English atm because it's not fully translated; it's close, now, much closer than when I read it a few months ago, so it'll be easier to read soon. Or maybe I shouldn't say it's pacing problems, but rather, it's more of a sequence of multiple major plots, strung together, with the growing relationship between Yan Wushi and Shen Qiao playing out in the background. I think if I'd known there was no "one big plot" that would have actually helped me, because it kept feeling like, "Oh, THIS is the main thing," but it never was. Things would feel climactic...except then there'd be more. So it's probably better to actually think of it as more...episodic? And the episodes/stories build, and interrelate, and do have a culmination, but not all of them directly tie in, and not all the threads end up coming together/getting resolved.

Relationship Dynamic: early on, Yan Wushi is definitely abusive and manipulative, intentionally so, and I would argue that, imo, Shen Qiao falls for it. However, mid-way through, there's some big reveals, and after that when they're reunited Shen Qiao no longer takes any shit and Yan Wushi continues to act like he doesn't care even when he clearly does. They're not a typical ship in ANY WAY, and I'd say their relationship is more founded on mutual respect than on love. Indeed, in the author's notes at one point MXS actually says they doesn't see them as the kind of couple to ever exchange love declarations, and I thought that was really interesting and it really helped me to understand how they worked together because I'll own I struggled with at times. Yan Wushi is self-interested, often cruel, and ethically and morally dubious. Shen Qiao, on the other hand, could probably ascend to Daoist godhood, he's so pure. Yet...they DO work. I'd say "opposites attract" but that's ALSO not their main trope, not exactly. They're a VERY hard ship to explain, and I know some people who've read the whole book and still don't really...get them...and I've had to really think about them to wrap my head around them...but the more I've thought about them, the more I like them.

6. Those Years in Quest of Honor Mine by Man Man He Qi Duo.

Genre: historical fiction set in either actual China or make-believe China, I'm not sure if this is directly incorporated any real people

Where to Access It: English Translation by Perpetual Daydreams | manhua (untranslated, I'm not sure if there's anyone translating it into English) | I think there's a live action in the works? Not sure beyond that though.

Trigger Warnings: suicide attempts, suicidal ideation, drug addiction, drug abuse, chronic illness (different character than the drugs), manipulation, abusive, awful parents and parental figures (not all, but definitely some), some homophobia (but way less than there could have been), probably other stuff

Plot: After 7 years away, Zhong Wan returns to the capital of the Empire with the three children of his benefactor, the seven-years-dead Prince Ning. Prince Ning was executed for treason against the previous Emperor, and Zhong Wan has done all he can to protect and raise the three kids, but he's got a lot of worries about returning to the capital and what could happen to his charges if they get pulled into the politics surrounded the Emperor. But, even worse, he's got even more worries about being reunited with Yu She, nephew of the Emperor, with whom he has more than a little history...and about whom he has been lying for the past 7 years, claiming that he is Yu She's lover, in a bid to help use Yu She's reputation to protect Prince Ning's children.

Hijinks ensue.

And so does a political nightmare.

My Take: TYQHM was a hard book to get into because there are just so many characters and it's all about politics - this is NOT a xianxia or wuxia novel, and these characters are NOT cultivators. There's basically nothing supernatural in the whole book; instead, it's about Zhong Wan and Yu She figuring out their own histories, and accepting each other, while trying to survive in a political world that increasingly wants both of them dead. However, I adore political plots, and when all was said and done I really enjoyed it, and I'm trying tooth and nail to claw other people into the fandom with me, so far with basically no success. It only has like 15 works in English on AO3. And so not only does it not fit that requirement of yours...

Relationship Dynamic: ...I think you would also probably not like the relationship dynamic? Zhong Wan is a bit like Wei Wuxian-as-Mo Xuanyu, except more...genuinely? Like, it's his actual personality, not an act, in quite the same way. I don't mean the "flamboyantly gay" part...usually...he definitely has his moments...but he's just...like, he's been through so much that he'll basically say anything, and drag himself entirely through the mud, to distract people who might hurt the three kids (they're like 16, 13, 13, now I think? It was never THAT clear to me, tbh...certainly, all are at least 10...) and, later, Yu She. He has zero face, and doesn't mind having negative face when he feels the situation demands it...and Yu She, on the other hand, has MAJOR depression issues, is sure he deserves nothing, and mostly wants to destroy everyone around him and then kill himself, at least until Zhong Wan starts giving him a reason to live again. But, more than that...Zhong Wan is like the fucking epitome of a bratty subby bottom. He wants to get fucked SO bad. And Yu She is an incredibly reluctant dom, hilariously so at times, uncomfortably/manipulative so at others. When all was said and done, I was pretty fond of them both, but there were definitely moments that made me grimace, and given what you say of how you felt about MDZS, I think this one is less likely to be to your taste?

Bonus 7: Guardian by Priest. I never finished the novel version of Guardian because the translation had some issues that caused me not to enjoy it, so I won't get into it too much, but again, Guardian is a very different book than any of the others, because it's modern fantasy(ish, like, it's still deeply embedded in Daoist-related tropes but it's more "magic spells" and less "cultivation." Like, in terms of what it's like, it felt more like Japanese modern Onmyoji style stories, to me, than it felt like the ancient Chinese wuxia/xianxia cultivation stories.). I'm not gonna get into lots of details, because I read part of the book more than a year ago, and have seen the show (which is VERY different) like three times, so I can hardly even remember what they're like in the novel. There was definitely some weirdness, though? If you're potentially interested, I'd suggest starting with the drama instead. The plot for that is...

Plot: Zhao Yunlan heads a Special Investigation Unit in the human world tasked with maintaining a treaty between humans and the dixigren ("undergrounders") who are (in the show) aliens (in the book...it's the world of the dead). While doing this job, he keeps running into this professor, Shen Wei, who definitely knows more than he oughta.

Hijinks ensue.

Been a while since I’ve posted, sorry about that-

I’m supposed to be in school rn lol

When finally taken back to the lockers, after thirty exhausting hours, Cryptor feels as though he’s on the verge of a forced shutdown.

The damn brat had switched out with someone else, claiming something about an internship. And that had at least meant that the one hurting him no longer had a personal vendetta, but it was still painful.

Cryptor hates how close he had come to actually asking them to hurt Zane instead, but he didn’t. Though judging by the way the other looks when the two of them are put in the locker, they hurt him anyway.

DID THEY GIVE YOU A CHOICE TOO?

Zane doesn’t answer for a moment, likely out of surprise or maybe exhaustion.

I DIDNT GIVE IN

Cryptor snorts. Of course he didn’t. He’s a self-sacrificing dumbass, and it had been that knowledge that had allowed Cryptor to hang on himself.

HOW LONG A BREAK DO YOU THINK WELL GET?

It’s a morbid game, really, but the two of them had taken to guessing how long they would get before dragged out for testing or torture.

AT LEAST SIX HOURS WE WERE THERE FOR OVER A DAY

Mulls over the words, Cryptor considers the idea. Zane’s probably right, but he feels like arguing.

OR THEYLL WANT TO BEAT IT INTO US WITH A SHORTER ONE

There’s a pause, and Cryptor takes a moment to hate himself. Yes, start an argument with his one friend, that’s a wonderful idea.

IS SOMEONE HAVING A BAD DAY?

Cryptor snorts. Good, Zane can tell when he’s only pretending to argue. Probably picked that up from his teammates.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

The friendly banter continues for a while, but Cryptor can eventually feel himself shutting down from exhaustion.

He taps out a goodbye and a quick explanation before falling asleep, hoping- but not expecting- that they’ll get today off.

Jay is starting to lose his grip.

Kai had gotten himself under house arrest by breaking into the government building- which he neglected to tell them the location of before doing so- and since they live on the Bounty, they’re stuck grounded so that the police can make sure that Kai’s not leaving.

Also he’s been sulking the whole time.

It’s already been almost two months, but he still has another four left, and everyone on the ship is going crazy from it.

“I am this close to renting a hotel until his house arrest is over.” Nya holds up her hand so that her pointer finger and thumb are almost touching.

Cole sighs, shaking his head. “I’d join you, but at this point I’m scared of leaving him unsupervised.”

Jay laughs a little. “Honestly, what could he do that’s worse than what he’s already done?”

The two immediately snap over to looking at him.

“Are you trying to jinx it?!” Cole groans. “You know full well how crazy he can get when it comes to protecting us.”

Wincing, Jay accepts the point. “That’s fair. But I doubt he would-“

Lloyd comes running into the room. “Kai left the ship. He tied his house arrest bracelet to the roomba so it would move, and I don’t know where he went.”

Jay blinks. “I stand corrected.”

Then they’re all scrambling to their feet, rushing off to try and find the dumbass hot head that is Kai.

Cole runs outside, probably off to go look at his usual hiding places- he’s run off before, but never under house arrest.

Nya goes to her computer, most likely going to try and track his phone- that’s her usual go-to for when one of them goes off to do something stupid.

He’s not entirely sure where Lloyd’s going, but he probably has some kind of plan.

But before Jay has the chance to come up with his own, his BorgPhone rings with a number that he doesn’t recognize.

A flash of fear takes over him. Oh, Kai better not have gotten captured. What happens if he has? They might hurt him, he might go to prison, he could get into all kinds of trouble!

With shaky hands, Jay hits accept and holds the phone up to his ear.

“Hey, this is Jay Walker. Who is this and how have I ruined your life?” Somehow, he manages to keep his voice from shaking.

“It’s more of your boyfriend who’s doing that.” Sentry grumbles. “I found Kai sneaking into Borg Tower- he was trying to find more hints of ways to rescue Zane. Please come and get him before he gets caught- I shoved him in a back room to keep people from finding him, but he’ll probably find a way out pretty soon.”

Jay curses softly. “Of course he did. Okay, I’m on my way.” He starts to head out even as he speaks, silently complaining about how reckless his boyfriend can be. He loves him, he really does, but sometimes- like now- he really wants to slap him.

It takes him around fifteen minutes to make it to Borg Tower, and when he steps inside, Sentry is standing right next to the door.

“He escapes from the room, so I put him in the timeout corner. He’s handcuffed to the wall, but I’m pretty sure that-“

Jay blinks a few times. “Wh- why do you have a timeout corner? And why does it have handcuffs?”

Sighing, Sentry shakes his head. “The white nindroids were created recently and are pretty immature,” he explains, “so a timeout is a pretty effective way to get them to behave. The handcuffs are for when they still don’t listen- now come on, we should hurry before he finds a way out.”

So Jay lets the nindroid lead him through the tower, trying to stop the way he’s nervously jittering. It- it’ll be fine, it’ll be totally and completely fi-

They come into a back room where Kai is in a chair and in handcuffs that are attached to the wall, forcing his hands above his head.

Jay glances over at Sentry. “Uh-“

“We have two timeout corners. This one is for the nindroids who cause trouble repeatedly. Or in this case, the ninja who does that.” He glares at Kai, but the red ninja looks utterly unapologetic.

“I need to rescue Zane. And you didn’t have to call someone to pick me up, I’m not some child in a school’s principal’s office.” Kai huffs, shifting in his bonds.

Jay starts to try and tell him that he’s totally acting like he’s just got his parents called in an office, but Sentry shakes his head, and speaks up.

“There’s a back door you can take him out so that he doesn’t get caught, but keep a better handle on him next time. We really don’t need him getting an actual prison sentence.”

Glancing at his boyfriend, Jay thinks for a moment, trying to figure out if he’d actually be able to get Kai out of here without being seen.

“I’m going to call Cole,” he decides, “he’ll be able to carry him out of here.”

“I can walk!” Kai protests, looking betrayed. “I don’t need to be carried-“

Sentry nods. “Probably a good idea. He might put up a fight on the way out.”

“I can hear you, you know! I’m right here.” Kai sounds annoyed and frustrated, and Jay sighs, feeling himself cave a little.

“It’s okay, Fire-Hazard. I’ll talk Nya out of murdering you, so long as you promise to actually stay on the ship this time.”

At his words, Kai pales a little. It’s clear he hadn’t thought about how his sister would react to him running off.

“I’ll behave.” He grumbles, clearly unhappy about it. “But I can’t just do nothing.”

With a start, Jay realizes that he’s right. The reason that he keeps doing stupid things is because he needs to be doing something to help- if he doesn’t, he’s going to feel like he’s failing Zane.

So they need to come up with something that he could work on, some way he could get them closer to freeing him.

Maybe if he was working on part of the plan…

Jay looks over at Sentry. “We’re looking for legal loopholes right now, right? Could he help you try and find some? From the computer on the ship, I mean.”

Kai perks up a little, and Sentry looks like he’s considering the idea.

“Will that keep him out of trouble?” He sounds hesitant, but Jay quickly nods.

“He just wants to help, give him a way to do that and he’ll be fine.”

The nindroid looks over at Kai. “Is he seriously going to be able to look through legal documents for longer than thirty seconds?” He sounds unamused, but he pauses again when he sees Kai’s determined expression.

“I looked through a ton of them to break in. I’ll do whatever it takes to get him out.”

After hesitating for only a moment longer, Sentry nods. “Alright,” he agrees, “I’ll send over some I haven’t gotten to yet.”

So Jay ends up only calling Cole so that he can let the others know that Jay found him, and Kai actually walks back without putting up a fuss.

It takes a bit of work to get him on the ship stealthily enough so that any potential cameras couldn’t see, but they manage it.

However, when they step onto the bridge, the three others look annoyed beyond belief.

After a pause, Kai chuckles nervously. “On a scale of one to ten, how much trouble am I in?”

“Eleven.” Nya’s smile expresses anything but happiness, and Cole and Lloyd look only slightly less upset.

Somehow, Jay manages to uphold his promise, talking Nya out of giving Kai some five hour lecture that would probably make him regret existing.

Lloyd grabs Stabby and re-attaches the house arrest bracelet, and it’s not long after that the red ninja is in front of the computer, having about seven files open that he’s comparing and researching.

Later, Cole comes up to him. “The research thing was good thinking; it’ll keep him distracted while still allowing him to help.”

Jay flashes him a smile. “What can I say? I actually have good ideas sometimes.”

Cole smirks. “That’s debatable.”

“You literally just told me that I had a good idea.” Jay reminds with his own grin.

With an overly thoughtful expression, Cole strokes his chin. “Did I? I don’t remember that.”

“Wow, and here I was with the idea that elephants never forget.” Jay snarks back, barely containing his snickers.

Mock gasping, Cole puts a hand over his chest. But as he starts to teasingly reply, his smile fades, and he looks down.

“... Zane loved mock arguments.” He murmurs softly, pain suddenly written on his face.

Jay feels his own cheerfulness drain a little. “It took a while to teach him how, but he got pretty good at them.” He quietly agrees as he remembers the difficulty Zane had used to have with humor.

“He got pretty good at them though.” Cole’s smile is more pained now, but it’s there.

With a soft chuckle, Jay nods. “Absolutely trashed us with them.”

But then the emotions are over taking him, and Jay feels himself shaking at the thought of his titanium boyfriend. Who knows what they’re doing to him, from Kai’s recount they’ve been outright torturing him, he-

Cole puts a hand on his shoulder. “It’ll be okay.” He speaks softly, and his voice is uncertain, as though he’s not really sure of himself, even though it sounds like he’s trying to keep it steady.

Jay nods weakly, feeling tears burn at the back of his eyes. “It’ll be okay.” He repeats softly, desperately trying to believe the words.

In the end, Cole has to coax both him and Kai into bed with gentle reassurances and promises that he sounds slightly unsure of, but at this point, Jay’s too desperate to think about how he might be wrong.

He just wants Zane back… is that really too much to ask for?

Apparently, because it doesn’t seem that they’ll be getting him back anytime soon.

That night, even when cuddled in the arms of his other boyfriends, he cries himself to sleep.

Zane will be okay. He has to be okay.

Jay won’t be able to take it if he’s not.

Re-reading hanshe with less word lookup is going well. I'm in section 10 already. I mean that's a long way to go with 209 sections. But if I'm doing 5 a day like rn that's 40 days to read instead of months like before, so with for increased reading speed. If I get up to 10 chapters a day that's 20 days to finish reading this fic which is under a month. Anyway we'll see.

Mostly I'm curious if when I hit 1/3 in, which is where I've read to before, if extensive reading no longer becomes possible because I don't have enough already-studied words for those parts afterward.

It’s interesting rereading because I can also start to tell which words/hanzi throw me off the most. There’s a number of new words I guess/remember quite easily, due to hanzi I remember easily. There’s also a number of 4-hanzi phrases I figure out easily because their hanzi are familiar and similar phrases I’ve already learned. however, STILL the words for suspicious, doubt, hesitate ALL trip me up! If I want to read fast I just guess which one the word means based on context! The hanzi for those 3 words just looks TOO similar to me especially with meanings that to me are also quite similar (if you doubt something you may be suspicious, if you doubt something or are suspicious you may hesitate, so the words are quite similar in meaning in my head).

(you will notice the bottom word uses a hanzi from hesitate, then a second hanzi from doubt, and it makes me confused as all hell as a result whenever I see any of these 3 words because I see hanzi from another similar word and then get lost about which means which).

Anyway, the hanzi I confuse for other hanzi/being part of other words, seem to be the ‘already learned’ words I am clicking the most. Because I’ve seen the word or hanzi many times but STILL the sound has not stuck in my mind so yet again I’m looking up the pronunciation. Like 绸缎 chouduan (silk) and chan (getting tangled/wrapped/involved with with someone/thing) 缠. I see the silk side radical and the enclosure on both (though the enclosures are different), and because they look pretty similar EVERY time I see chou as in silk I want to read it as ‘chan’. About 80% of the time I see that word I have to re-check the pronunciation. Reading extensively is actually helping slightly, in that I think my brain is making more of an effort to remember the pronunciation since I’m trying to be less likely to look something up again so its just got less chances to retain the info. This is the first time in like 6+ months of encountering the word chouduan that the pronunciation is FINALLY sticking in my brain.

Words that have familiar hanzi are much less of a struggle, even when new, and I wonder if my comprehension really is close to 98%? I didn’t measure this fic hanshe, just some novels I had (zhenhun was 95%, dmbj 1 and saye were 98%). But I can tell that if I don’t care about sound, I’m not running into many ‘incomprehensible in context’ words at all, and usually a word or less per paragraph that I full on can’t pronounce or make a good guess for a pronunciation I remember (and those words aren’t necessarily the new ones - so fucking often that word is just youyi huaiyi or youyu ToT lol). My point is... my ability to read aloud has improved, I can actually read quite a bit more hanzi aloud on sight than several months ago. I am practicing reading aloud a little since I have terrible ‘read aloud flow’ right now lol.

Also? Realizing if I read aloud I am almost guaranteed to say every 了 as de by instinct first. I bet thats 1 part that pleco app always reads 的 as di, so I overcorrected in my head with ‘it actually sounds like de in many situations BE aware’ and then now when I see le I just automatically switch into ‘overcorrect di mode’ lol. Another part is I think it might reflect my speaking comfort level a little. Le is not terribly difficult to use for beginner appropriate conversation tasks (like saying “i went to the store” etc) but in conversations idk why I rarely use it or rarely make a mental note when i do use it, so like when I type i am well aware its something i write without then realize i skipped and put back in. So its interesting to me when reading and inner-vocalizing or speaking aloud, my brain is actually still doing the same thing as my writing pattern - skipping the word then only adding it back in if i realize i skipped it.

Hanshe getting easier over time also speaks to the difficulty of priest novels like? While i love them and will trudge through? The language in hanshe used to be peak too much for me it would take me 1.5 to 2 hours to finish a chapter. And priest wasn't even doable. Then eventually I could read tianyake in 1-2 hour chapters then eventually in 20-30 min. Eventually I could read hanshe again in 10-20 minute chapters. But like - however difficult hanshe is, priests writing is harder to read. Priest just has more unknown words per page for me.

I am wondering when priest’s writing will go from doable to a bit easier than just doable, the way hanshe did. Probably a long way off (and I’m aiming for zhenhun and modu, I suspect sha po lang and can ci pin will take much longer as they’re genres I don’t read).

On the topic of genres: I may read tangstory’s 2 novels that are sequels - one historical court, one republican era. Those are two genres I don’t read, but I do watch shows in those genres so learning some of the genre words would fall in line with things I would LIKE to eventually read. Tangstory’s stories are on the shorter side (much shorter than hanshe or zhenhun dang) and show as like 35 sections in my reader app (compared to 209 ToT). They have lovely english translations if I do need clarification or just want to read them later, and again those genres are ones I should get more familiar with.

Other options for reading for more genres: Qi Ye for more historical/court vibe language, and Tian Ya Ke when I’m ready again for its wuxia language - but both of these require me braving a full priest story which. I don’t want to start anything right now that will take more than 2 months to read. Upside is these both have nice translations to refer to, downside is I need to be able to read priest easier to tackle them. And if I’m reading priest easier I may go right for Zhenhun (both because its a goal novel of mine to read and because I know a lot more supernatural/modern words).

For detective novels, I’d like to branch out into maybe SCI Mystery (seems closer to my reading level except for the detective terms which I should learn), Ding Mo novels (like the one Love me if You Dare is based on) since Ding Mo has been recced to me and the reading level isn’t too high, PoYun (but the reading level IS around MoDu and I can TELL - but I think it opens with more vocabulary I should learn and am unfamiliar with as far as detective stories/police/action and weaponry words).

I want to branch into something easier as a first sci fi novel, but I can’t think of any I want to read except C语言修仙 and 残次品. On a guess, I’d say the first novel is probably easier if ONLY because its 2 print books instead of 4 ToT. Also Can Ci Pin has gratuitous variety of names and I think as a cultivator novel maybe Cyuyanxiuxian will have more of a modern-like one country setting with less new terms to learn (versus Can Ci Pin with new planets, names, spaceships and tech, mech suits, mutant and disease terminology, govt terms, etc).

May I please get a written ship for haikyuu and attack on titan? I can be described as introverted and withdrawn because of events in life despite being outgoing and lively in the past. I randomly doze off and daydream a lot when I’m alone, with friends, and family. Because of my introverted personality I am often mistaken for cold a lot because of my “resting bitch face.” Once people get to know me I am just emotionally shy and empathetic. I’m pretty much independent and a hard worker that spends too much caring for everyone but myself. My friends describe me as a good listener and easy to talk with because I Am open-minded and easygoing. I like to watch anime, read manga, play video games (final fantasy and kingdom hearts: my favorite series. also metal gear, solid, resident evil etc.), watch DC comic films and shows XD Besides that, my ultimate favorite hobbies include drawing fan arts of Kpop groups & anime, while listening to music (second ultimate favorite hobby). I also like to swim and drive around because of my love for adventures and imagination (also relaxation). I have a strong passion of disliking bugs (especially cockroaches). Honestly, I was going through so many characters trying to find the right one. Like my first instinct was Iwaizumi, but then I checked out Ushijima, then Tsukishima, then Kageyama, then Daichi, but eventually came back to Iwaizumi. The reason why I chose him over quite a few other characters, really lies in the fact that you don’t open up and come off as cold to people due to past experiences. Iwaizumi has shown himself to be one of the more mature characters in the show. He’s respectful to his comrades and opponents, he’s usually really calm and rational, and can put up with Oikawa. He seems like someone that would be able to help you open up despite your shy, introverted demeanour. He knows what you’ve gone through and understands how you feel, and honestly? That’s enough for him to know what he has to do. Whenever you’re staring off mindlessly, he’ll be the one to snap you out of it. He’ll be there when you just need to cry shit out. He knows how you have a hard time opening up, and he knows better than to pry any farther than what you’ve told him. He’ll sit down and listen to you rant about life for hours if you want him to. He respects the fact that you would like to keep some things to yourself and is completely fine with that. Maybe with time, you started to trust him more and more due to his maturity and respect, opening up little by little and letting him in instead of shutting him out. He loves to see you when you’re being your best self, just chilling out and vibing with your friends, a smile finally adorning your face after hours of just staring at a resting bitch face, with the occasional grin or two. The reason why I didn’t go with someone like Ushijima or Kageyama, is because they’re both very blunt. Too blunt. And they can’t read situations or people at all, unless it’s volleyball. Daichi would be good, if he wasn’t this open to everything. Daichi’s super friendly and outgoing, which might not ring the best with your more introverted self. Plus, he gets pissed sometimes and it’s honestly scary. At last, Tsukishima. Do I even have to explain? He can’t read anything apart from volleyball trajectories and spikes. His snarky remarks and joking insults might be a bit overwhelming for you.

Okay this was literally a match made in God’s hands just saying. You two can relate to each other a lot, both coming off as cold, insensitive, and often times emotionless. However, if anyone ever managed to get closer to you two, they would realise how you guys were actually some of the most emotional people. The only reason you guys seem cold is because you can’t seem to find a way to trust people enough or to express said emotions. Because of all your similarities, you and Levi are able to bond over that and form a stable relationship. There will be times where you two just go to wastelands together with a bunch of rubbish, and just destroy them. It’s kind of like a bonding activity between you two, to let all that pent up anger and emotional frustration out. He knows you don’t take care of yourself enough, and you know that goes for him too, so you two make it up for each other by doing exactly that. You’d make tea for Levi and *try* to clean up his office the best of your abilities. In return, he would check up on your emotions once in a while (Vibe check lmao), will definitely get you a shit load of sweets whenever he has the chance to, and will probably get you new sketchbooks once in a while when you’ve filled one out. He’d do anything to see you finally let your worries go and just have fun with life, even if he can’t do that for himself. You’re probably the only person that he’s ever arranged a surprise party for. Ever. You literally just walked into his office and BOOM, the entire current Levi squad was there, holding balloons. You didn’t even remember it was your own birthday. The image of your face finally forming a smile instead of your usual resting bitch face was enough to make his day- no scratch that, his entire ass week. Plus, your mutual hatred for bugs is something you two can joke about constantly. There was absolutely no debating between characters for this, it was just blatantly obvious the second I finished reading this. No one can relate to you more than Levi can when it comes to inner conflict and emotions. This man cares about you so much please don’t hurt him I’m begging you-

Okay, let's break these down. (I've crammed things that should be separated in different paragraphs in the same paragraph because of the structure of the ask. I just think it is easier to navigate it that way even if more paragraphs would make more sense. That way every opinion is constricted in one paragraph and you can tell which point it refers to easier. (At least imo.))

2. Don't use adverbs

I cannot begin to describe to you how much I LOATHE this. It is, by far, some of the stupidest writing advice I have ever read. No, I don't care Stephen King supports this. Stephen King writes mostly horror and in horror you need to maintain suspense so short and to the point is definitely better and cutting adverbs is certainly a way to do that. However, I don't think this applies to all writing. I think this isn't really a genre thing as much as it is a specific case by case thing. And in most instances I think this advice is bullshit. Think about it. Language was created to allow us to express ourselves. Cut all adverbs out of it and that narrows down your way to express yourself. It's kinda like "Oh, hey, my leading hand serves more purpose. I should probably cut off the other one because it's not that effective." Congrats, you just crippled yourself. It's the same with language. Why would you deny yourself the help of an entire group of "tools" to express yourself? I just don't understand it. I suppose you've seen the posts going around about "good" and "bad" adverbs so I won't go into that as I agree that an adverb is a good idea when it adds some meaning to the word that wasn't there before (eg. "cried happily"). Sometimes it can actually make things faster to just "tell" them rather than show them through the context. I think adverbs are as neat as any other part of language and deserve their place in writing.

3. Write what you know

Yes, you should know what the hell you're writing about. Whether it was something that you were familiar with before you started writing or you did your research on the matter. I might be a little biased on this because I kinda hate doing research so I can be swayed towards write only what you are completely familiar with but that would just make things boring. So I think you can write about stuff that isn't quite your area of expertise as long as you put the effort to research it to the proper level depending on what you need it for. If it's more of a mention, you don't need that much knowledge about it but if you intend to make it the subject of your writing, please make sure you understand what you're going to be talking about in the entirety of your story. I am begging you because when you don't, we end up with stuff like 50 Shades of Grey (and I'm not just talking about the sex parts since this book is full of poorly researched stuff that, shockingly, ends up being unbelievable at best, potentially harmful at worst). However, I think that applies to a greater degree to published fiction rather than to fanfiction but let's not get into that debate since it's a completely different topic and I already veered off course.

4. Avoid repetition

This I mostly agree with but it depends on the purpose of the repetition. If it is done in order to establish a theme or motif or to emphasize a point (without overdoing it, of course), I fully support it. (I do that a lot in my personal writing and it shouldn't be that hard to find examples of it when looking at my fics ("What Is the One Thing That Can Never Break?" is the best example of this but I have done it countless times in most of my fics if not all of them since this is one of my fave techniques).) However, there is a thin line between establishing a theme and making dead herrings aka something that is brought up repeatedly without any point to it other than boosting the word count since it doesn't lead to anything and it was already discussed at a prior point (which I might have done a few times myself in some of my longest fics). If you're bringing another angle to an issue you've already looked at or are furthering the point, you should be fine but this is indeed a thin line to tread so it demands a bit of caution. I do believe repetition can be a valuable technique in specific circumstances, though, so it all depends on how it is used.

22. Do not use semicolons

My personal opinion on this isn't very applicable to anything else because I am not really quite sure how to properly use semicolons so I avoid them. I also don't really like them in other people's writings. I'm sure they have their uses but I think a lot of authors also overuse them to make those horrendously long sentences that I hate (but have started becoming guilty of as well even though I think that if you can't remember how the sentence started at the end of it, it is too long and needs to be split in some way). It is why I haven't bothered to learn how to operate them. XD But I think that my point about adverbs should be applied here as well. It is another tool you can use and I am sure it can be helpful. So I am not necessarily against it and wouldn't tell someone to stop using them. Only, maybe try using full stops as well? And I'll try to do the same because, like I said, I have started becoming guilty of paragraph long sentences as well. (Just to be clear, sometimes longer sentences are okay. But not when literally every sentence is over 150 words. You need to break them down, spice it up with shorter sentences thrown in the mix.) Also, I think this is an instance of the trap of "bigger is better" for a lot of writers except that here it is "longer is better". It really isn't. And I can tell you why. My scenes have started getting thousands of words long and if I were to write novel, I could hit 50k words with about ten scenes. Most novels are up to 120k words total. Those would be 24 scenes in my numbers but don't you feel like a novel will need more than 24 scenes? Consice writing is definitely a good idea and it is much harder to cut things rather than to add (at least for me). Fanfiction gives more room with the word count but I still think that it is important to be able to convey your point in as little words as possible. (Btw, this is a tangent but long sentences and semicolons appear a lot in academic writing and I hate it even more there because it makes it more incomprehensible than it needs to be (and in a lot of cases it already is written to be as incomprehensible as possible). Just... start another sentence, I am begging you. This one already is a page long, for the love of everything in the world.)

24. Don't edit as you write

A complicated one. Mostly because I have done this. I used to do it a few years back. I (mostly) don't do it anymore. I might stop to edit a typo or change a sentence that just doesn't read right but nothing bigger than that. And you should, arguably, not do that either. Why? Because you may end up deleting the entire paragraph, page, chapter and all that perfecting will have been for naught. It has happened to me when I spent a ton of time perfecting the first chapters of several of my works and some of them I will never finish while others actually need to start from a different point in time so the whole chapter needs to go. Along with all of my efforts. I would say this is mostly for longer and chaptered projects since the structure of a one shot (depending on the length) is easier to figure out and you probably won't need to rearrange parts of it. And if something is really poking your eyes out, you can fix it real quick. But once you have the whole thing, it will be easier to see what needs to stay, what needs to go and what needs to be changed. Sometimes the temptation is hard to resist and it's fine if you give in as long as you're doing it with the knowledge that "yes, this may be all for nothing but I can't look at it like that for another second". Sometimes I would say that you need to go back and see where everything derailed if you can't move on. There was good advice that if you're stuck, the problem is probably a few paragraphs before the point where you hit a wall and it has helped me get over a block a time or two. However, if you can move on without touching anything, you probably should. That can also save you from deleting something that is actually good. I have felt like the whole thing I was writing was terrible but holding back from deleting or even altering anything and, instead, giving it some time to breathe has saved a few fics along the way from being completely butchered. So I think this is, generally, good advice because of the reasons I listed but just like any other rule, it can be bent and broken. (I would say fixing typos is a form of bending it which I allow myself all the time. Spelling is just really important to me.)

36. Never use a verb other than 'said' to tag dialogue

I hate this specific phrasing of it a lot. Never start any rule with never. Of course, you need to use other verbs as well since they were created to express the wide range in which a person may speak their chosen words. My problem with this is the reason that is usually given for it and that is that it distracts the reader. It has never distracted ME. Not a single time. And while I agree that using said most of the time works since people usually speak in a calm, even, steady manner which to describe as simply "said" works well enough, I think that other dialogue tags have their places too. Because people don't always say things. Sometimes they scream them, sometimes they whisper them, sometimes they hiss them, sometimes they snap and so on. Here I think a better phrasing would be to use Syndrome's lesson again that "when everyone is super, no one will be". Dialogue tags different from said are supposed to direct your attention to the change in tone. They're supposed to stand out. If everything stands out, nothing will. (This philosophy is so applicable to so many things and I think we have to take a minute to appreciate how valuable the lesson of "The Incredibles" is.) So as with every other writing tool, if used accordingly, dialogue tags (all of them, not just "said") can only be of help and will not hinder you in any way. Just don't put more frosting on the cake than there is cake, you know?

37. Do not start a sentence with a conjunction

FUCK THIS RULE so much. This one you have to keep to only in academic writing. The moment you step through the threshold of creative writing this rule should be crushed under your soles. I often start sentences with "and" or "but" because I am looking to emphasize whether this sentence agrees with the previous one or not. Think about it. When you say "I liked him. But I didn't trust him.", it reads very different from "I liked him but I didn't trust him.". It focuses your attention on that contrast and makes you pay more attention to the objection to the first sentence that comes in the second. That can be incredibly valuable and help emphasize what you're saying in a more subtle way than repetition would. This is one of my favorite techniques of focusing the attention on where I want it to be and I will never give it up. Sue me if you want. And see if I care.

39. If there's a story you want to read but it hasn't been written yet, you must write it

Must is too strong a verb. You are not obliged to write anything. I couldn't possibly write everything I want to see written in a single lifetime. Calm down there. I think what people need to understand here is more that "if you want the story done the exact way that you would do it, you will have to do it yourself because no one else will do it the very same way". Doesn't mean that someone can't come close enough (I had that luck once) but it is unlikely that they'll do it in a way that you won't have any complaints about. So, really, "if you want something done right, do it yourself". But this can also mean "you have something fresh that the world needs because no one else has done it yet" (or at least not the same way you would do it). Which is cool but you really don't owe anyone anything. If that story is what you want to read and write (emphasis on that because writing is hard and takes a lot of energy, guys), then great! Go right ahead. But if you don't feel like doing that, you can leave it alone. Someone else might do it in time but with that we loop back to my previous point. I think that you should write whatever you want to write whether no one has written it before or it has been done hundreds and thousands of times.

42. Write your first draft by hand

Very mixed feelings here. I used to do that. The main reason for that is that I didn't trust myself to edit quite as sufficiently if I wrote it directly in a document as I would if I had to transcribe it from paper to the computer. For me personally, it is easier to change sentences when there is only blank space after that sentence since I don't have to worry whether the next sentence I have will still make sense once I'm done rewriting the current one. It was just easier to change things. A way to deal with that is to just press enter a few times before you start editing the sentence so that it looks like there is nothing after it and you're free to change it as you please. However, writing directly in a document is definitely faster and since I was having a lot of things to do in a limited time, I started doing that. It helped get over the fear of a blank page to a degree. It is faster. And I don't think I have noticed a change in the quality of my fics. Not a negative one at least. I just know that if I had had to write the 10k+-word ones by hand before typing them on the computer, I would've lost it. It would've taken way more time and patience than I was willing to give these ideas. Writing the words by hand sometimes helps me feel them better, though, (if that makes sense) and I wouldn't completely give up on it. I like to go with my intuition when deciding whether to write it by hand or type it directly in a document and it has worked out well enough for me so far.

can I just say, i’m aware that (at least i’m hoping anyway) the cover is supposed to be tongue in cheek and poking fun at white trash stereotypes but....idk man......😬

I actually like the production on this track a lot. it’s pretty fresh and miles away from ME! in terms of its quality and relevance.

the opening lines are fabulous lmfao see THIS is the type of stuff that she should’ve included in ME!, because this song shows that you can have a positive message but still have good lyricism with it, otherwise it just sounds childish and that was the problem with ME! for me

“and i’m just like, hey, are you okay?” amazing

the prechorus is serving me katy’s never really over chorus realness with how fast the lyrics are being sung looool but I don’t mind it that much, it fits in with the overall theme of the song

the “snakes and stones” line sounds cool but idk....it seems a little...late? idk if that’s the correct word to use but I could’ve done without a reference to rep & that whole era. it takes me out of the song I bit I think bc it suffers from the same issue some of the songs on rep did where instead of going for the full narrative in those songs (idsb, dbm, tiwwchnt) she retreats slightly to prop herself in a certain role that I don’t necessarily agree with.

the chorus is.....meh? I like the ad-lib ohs in the background (and shows off the good production in this song) but the actual lyrical content is a bit meh. the step on my gowns feels slightly out of place for me

is the you could be glad bit supposed to be GLAAD? because the lyric video just shows it as glad, so I am confusion™️ because I don’t think it really works if she’s not referencing the organisation lol

I appreciate her singing about homophobia and pride parades etc, I really genuinely do, because i’ve grown up with taylor and her music has something i’ve evolved with, but I can’t help but feel a bit weird about that whole verse.

I don’t really know how I feel about taylor singing that line. I know there’s obviously speculation from multiple groups of people in her fandom that she might be gay/bi (i’m ignoring kaylors because they’re just like larries) so I definitely don’t want to invalidate that possibility, it just feels a little “look gay people1! I know you too1! yas mawma sis gurl spill the tea and clock the mug YAAAAAS1!” for me for it to feel like it’s a 100% organic line and especially during pride month...i’d feel weird if she profits off of this song and makes merch or whatever that benefits her rather than giving back to the community as a straight woman (that she’s publicly stated, that could obviously change)

if you listen to the song with earphones like I am rn, the oh oh bit goes between the two ears which is cool and me like the cool things lol.

this song has a good message and I appreciate that in a time where a lot of pop music has the subject matter of mental health issues &/or suicide & people are looking to pop stars like taylor for guidance and an escape

the song is clearly shorter to appeal to the streaming era which idk how I feel about it, she’s getting her coin and streams etc and good for her! I just feel like the song would feel more rounded and complete if there was a full bridge with it, but maybe she felt people might find it too repetitive otherwise, I don’t know.

it’s definitely WAY better than ME! in my opinion (and I still don’t really understand why that was their lead single) and I think once I hear it a few more times i’ll vibe to a bit more despite some of the issues I have with it. we shall see! now we wait until august for the lover album.

god I am weak for fake dating…and for accidental dating, so, of course, I combined the two for some fluffy fluffy post-pitfall Newmann. Newt might as well move to Egypt, though––he could become a sister river to the Nile with how oblivious and blind he is.

“No.”

The word echoes in his mind, the weight of it settling heavily in his gut, combined with the sudden silence, leaves him reeling. “I––what?” Newt croaks, stunned.

Byron shakes his head. “No, Newt. I’m not interested in you. You’re not a bad person, you just…” he pauses. “You’re too manic and hyper. It would never work.” He shoots Newt an apologetic smile, turns to leave. Newt can feel the eyes of everyone around’s gazes on him.

“…oh,” he says, quietly, dropping his head. The box of fine chocolates sits on the café table, the bright red bow listing sadly to the side from where Newt attempted to tie it in the middle. Sadly, he picks it up, shoves it into his bag. The papers within crinkle as the weight of the box crushes them, but Newt can’t bring himself to care.

When he gets back to the flat, Hermann’s sitting in the leather arm-chair, filling out a cross-word puzzle, a cup of tea balanced on the arm. When Newt enters, he glances up. “Newton,” he greets, before frowning at his lack of reply. “Is everything alright?”

“Mhm,” Newt says, listlessly, “I’ll be in my room if you need me.”

Hermann sets the paper down. “Newton, what’s wrong?”

Newt sighs, shoulders falling. “I just…I didn’t have a great day, dude, alright?” he says, miserably. “Just––just leave it, okay?”

Hermann’s lips thin into a straight line. “Come here,” he commands, rising from his seat. Newt sets down his bag and, after a moment of dithering, complies. Hermann wraps his arms around Newt, the cold of his fingers seeping through Newt’s shirt, comforting and grounding, and Newt presses his face into the soft knit of his sweater-vest. “Better?” Hermann asks, softly, and Newt nods. “Good. I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa, and then you can go to bed. It’ll all be fine.”

Except the next morning, when he turns on his phone, there’s fifteen text messages, and one link from Mako that says “Newt, you have to see this”. An ominousness creeps up his spine, and, with a hesitance usually reserved for experiments that might explode acid all over the lab, he taps the link.

It’s a youtube video, shot from a shaky hand-held device, but the camera focuses on two figures at a table, a box with a distinctive red bow between them. Oh, shit, Newt thinks, fears confirmed as the lens focuses on the shorter of the two. It’s Newt.

Byron rises, says, “No.” The camera zooms in on Newt’s slack face. Someone in the background whispers oh my god, is that Professor Geiszler? He checks the video. 179, 394 views, 3, 446 comments. Newt closes the tab, types, still in shock, mako, what’s this?

After a second, Mako’s reply pops up on the screen. It’s all over twitter and tumblr. They’re tagging it “#MITreject”

Newt’s chest tightens, the humiliation making his skin crawl. Against his better judgement, he opens the link again and checks the comments.

The comments continue in a similar fashion, expressing various sentiments; pity, however, is clearly at the forefront of every comment. Eyes watering, Newt turns the phone off and shoves it under his pillow. He feels awful.

Hermann notices, because of course he does; it may be Saturday, but Newt never spends more than three hours in his room without making a single sound.

The bed dips as Hermann sits down. “What happened?” he asks, softly. Newt lets out a sad sigh, and, wordlessly, digs his phone out and hands it to him. Hermann bypasses the security with ease that should be alarming, but is somehow grounding in its reminder that they’ve been in each others’ minds.

“…oh,” he says. “Newton, I…”

“It’s alright,” Newt says, face hidden in the pillow. “I just…I need some time to process. And get used to the fact that my students are going to be pitying me for the rest of the year.” He lets out a self-deprecating laugh. “It was bound to happen at some––better sooner than later.”

There’s a moment of silence, before Hermann’s fingers are carding through his hair in a silent gesture of support. “I…” he pauses. “If it really bothers you that much that they…pity you, then I can––well, if you’d like, I…”

Words fail him, but Newt has an inkling of what he’s trying to say––he did spend the better part of a decade sharing a lab with him. “You––you would do that for me?” he asks, sniffling, and Hermann gives a tiny nod.

“Of course.”

The plan goes off beautifully––Hermann invites Newt to the very same café, buys him an extravagant bouquet of flowers, and asks him out in front of everyone. The earnest eagerness leaves tears in Newt’s eyes and does funny things to his heart, especially when Hermann bestows him with a small, but genuine smile.

“Thank you,” Newt says to Hermann, quietly, afterwards. “I…” he doesn’t know what to say. Hermann gives him an understanding look.

“Let’s go home,” he suggests.

Home. There’s something about the way he says the word, tender and awed and yet at the same casual, like it’s the only possible thing he could say. Our home, Newt realizes, and it knocks the breath out of him for a moment. When did it go from just home to our home? The fact of the matter is, Newt hasn’t a clue––the progression from lab partners to cohabitation is dangerously blurred, as if it was less of a switch and more of a long, slippery slope, a natural progression.

Oh, no, Newt thinks, I think I love him.

Afterwards, it becomes startlingly clear that Newt moved from hate to love a long, long time ago––hell, it wasn’t even hate in the first place; it was disappointment; disappointment at himself for running his mouth off and driving Hermann away.

Additionally, it also becomes clear that all of these things Newt does––reading to Hermann when he has a nightmare, making his tea just how he likes it after a stressful day––are…domestic. Disgustingly so; they resemble, more and more as Newt thinks on it, an old married couple.

Oh, if only! Hermann, clearly, harbors nothing other than an exasperated fondness towards Newt; if he did have any romantic feelings for Newt, he the type to say it and get it out and over with, not dilly-dally about it.

So, Newt does what anyone in his situation would: he pines.

It’s hard not to, given that every little thing Hermann does––the curl at the corner of his lips when Newt makes an especially snarky remark, the way his hair is adorably fluffed up in the morning after he showers––makes his heart-rate quicken and his cheeks heat.

He reflects that it was only a matter of time; he’s been stuck with Hermann for the better part of a decade, and, before then, almost five years spent writing back and forth––it was an inevitability, really; he falls hard and fast anyway, and combine that with more than a decade of orbiting around Hermann––well, it was bound to happen.

Only, to make matters worse, Hermann doesn’t stop at the grand gesture of asking him out––no, he acts like Newt’s boyfriend in public. If it didn’t make Newt’s heart sing with joy, he thinks that the constant almost-kisses would kill him. Almost, because as much as he wants it to be real, it isn’t, and he’s not going to be a dick and take advantage of Hermann like that.

So, because he isn’t sure what to say––Hermann, you don’t have to keep pretending you want me sounds pathetic––he resolves to say nothing. At least, until Hermann walks out of his bedroom one morning, and makes him way towards Newt.

Newt expects him to just grab the cup of tea Newt’s made him, sitting on the coffee-table next to Newt’s mug of coffee, but instead, Hermann picks up the cup, pats Newt’s shoulder, eyes still half-lidded, presses a chaste kiss to his cheek, and says, “Thank you,” before disappearing back into his room.

Newt remains frozen in his seat, uncertain of what’s just happened, the ghost of Hermann’s lips on his cheek.

Except then it happens again. And again. It’s driving Newt insane––what purpose could there be to it? They’re in private––there’s no one to pretend for. Maybe, he thinks, this is just Hermann practicing so that it’s convincing when we’re in public?

Yes, that’s the only logical explanation.

The only logical explanation for the situation at hand, though it’s failing slightly, given that they’ve just gotten back from a nice dinner––Hermann insisted on paying, and Newt agrees, since he paid last time they went out––and Hermann’s pressed him against the wall, one hand hooked under his tie, the other at the base of his neck, kissing the living daylights out of him.

When they break apart, Newt lets out a soft whimper and swallows, trying to breathe properly. Hermann’s eyes track the movement, settling on his lips. Suddenly, the explanation makes no sense––actually, it’s pretty blown to pieces. Newt croaks, “So, this is probably a bad time to ask, but are we…dating?”

Hermann stares at him. “…yes?” he says, uncertainly. “I thought you knew that?”

Newt lets out a huff of laughter. “Funny story, that––I thought that you were. Pretending. Because of that thing…months ago…” he trails off, suddenly remembering the day after.

Hermann cooked them lasagne for dinner and they watched some new sci-fi movie, and Hermann had asked, “So, Newton, will you go on a date with me?”

Newt had, at the time, laughed it off, assuming Hermann was joking, but he’d said yes anyway, because––because––because he wanted to date Hermann.

“Holy shit,” Newt breathes. “That was for real?”

“Yes?” Hermann questions. “You…you didn’t know that?”

“No, I––I thought you were joking!” Newt exclaims. “I mean, I wanted it to be real, but it seemed too good to be true, so I figured it wasn’t, but––but it was?”

Hermann lets his head fall to Newt’s shoulder, shaking slightly. “Yes, Newton, it was––it was very real,” he gasps through his laughter. “I cannot believe you managed to brush it off as––as an accident. Hell, I’ve been taking you out on dates for the past few months.”

Newt gapes, even though Hermann can’t see, and says, weakly, “…oh.”

“Quite,” Hermann agrees, pulling back to look him in the eye. “Now that that’s been cleared up, would you like to continue?”

“Yes,” Newt says, emphatically, and drags a more-than-willing Hermann down for another kiss.

Can nursing certification help close the gender pay gap?

To certify or not to certify, that is the question.

Likely you have asked this question yourself. Your organization may be on the Magnet journey, and increasing certifications is part of that journey for your unit. You also may want to expand your job prospects or increase and demonstrate your expertise with a certification. However, there are costs, time and stress involved in becoming certified. Is it worth it? Yes! For many reasons, but one in particular may surprise you. Certification may help close the gender pay gap in nursing.

Men in nursing make more money

In the Nurse.com 2018 Nursing Salary Research Report, I found, like other researchers have, that men make more money than women. Understandably, many individuals feel they know why that is the case. So Nurse.com by OnCourse Learning conducted a salary survey to help sort through the weeds to get a clearer picture.

How did we do that? Statistically speaking, I controlled for hours worked, education and length of time as an RN. Guess what? None of those variables could explain why men made more.

Men worked a little more than one extra hour on average per week, they were less educated, fewer were certified and they had a shorter tenure in nursing yet made significantly more ($79,688) than women ($73,090). Men were more likely to negotiate salary, but it had no statistical significance either on salary.

What did impact equalizing salary for women? Certification! When comparing salaries between men and women who had or didn’t have a professional certification, women still made less, but it was not statistically different. See below.

Yes they have a certification:

Men (M = 137) with an average salary of $81,672

Women (M = 1,632) with an average salary of $80,420

If they answered no, they don’t have a certification:

Men (M = 255) with an average salary of $78,342

Women (M = 2,475) with an average salary of $68,227

Certification helps to close the salary gap for women in nursing. But why is there a pay gap in nursing? I still can’t answer that for you, and there is a lot of stipulation out there. I still am venturing to say there is an unconscious bias that influences offering pay regardless of human resource controls.

This has implications for men and women. Even if you are a man, who might make more, why should you care? Salary should be equal regardless of gender identity, different only for education, tenure in nursing and certification.

Don’t be afraid to negotiate your salary

The Nurse.com salary report did demonstrate men are more likely to consider changing positions than women. Research shows anyone who sticks with the same employer for more than two years costs the employee 50% or higher in their lifetime wages.

Does this mean head to the internet now to search for your new job? No! What it does mean, is know your worth going into a job search, and don’t be afraid to negotiate salary.

Even though it didn’t show an impact in the Nurse.com salary report, men were more likely to negotiate salary than women. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have an individual affect.

Additionally, when I talk with women going through an interview process, many have said they don’t know the salary range for the jobs for which they have applied and are interviewing. Quite often they are afraid to ask, or feel that they don’t want to give the new employer the feeling that money is the most important factor.

Money is an important factor, and it is okay to ask.

Never move forward in a job interview process if you do not know up front what the salary range is, are comfortable with that range and where you may fit. No one is going to pay you over the top of the range.

Also, go get certified! Both men and women had a higher average salary with certification.

Lastly, if you are a hiring manager, or in a position to offer salaries, check your bias. Are you unconsciously offering a higher salary to men? Someone is offering higher salaries to men!

Susan, type 1 from Georgia, writes: I have been a type 1 for 28 years and also have PCOS. I have started perimenopause and my morning blood sugar reading can suddenly jump to 400!!! Many years ago I was given metformin for my PCOS and also to help with the diabetes, I am wondering whether you feel this might help again??

Wil@Ask D’Mine answers: Four hundred is only a good number when we are talking one hundred dollar bills or bottles of wine in the cellar, not blood sugar, so ya gotta do something—that’s for sure. For other readers’ benefit, let me quickly mention that the type 2 diabetes starter drug metformin has been used for years off-label to treat polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), although its use is becoming increasingly controversial. In theory, it helps by improving insulin sensitivity, as insulin resistance is part of the pathogenesis of PCOS. And, as many surprised ladies with diabetes have discovered over the years, metformin can increase fertility, which is also an issue with PCOS.

But to your question: Would it help? Sure. At least for the blood sugar. Even though it's also off-label for type 1s, metformin will still have some positive effect on us. It’s a mild insulin sensitizer after all, and it keeps the liver from dumping excess glucose into the bloodstream overnight.

Of course, you’ll still need your insulin. And lucky thing, too, as blood sugars of 400 are well beyond the power of metformin to control by itself (nevermind for the moment that a type 1 can’t use met monotherapy). Yep, when it comes to glucose-lowering power, metformin is a most excellent tool for putting out diabetes brush fires. But your morning sugars are a full-blown forest fire. You need slurry bombers, guys with shovels and chain saws, and lots of fire trucks full of water.

Will the metformin help with the perimenopause itself? Its symptoms? I doubt it. I can’t see, pathologically, how it could, and I can’t find any research on it whatsoever—although there’s no shortage of anecdotal comments on blogs and assorted vitamin-selling commercial sites. Meanwhile, there’s good evidence that birth control pills are more helpful with perimenopause cramps than anything else.

What’s all this add up to? Well, you know what we’re going to say: Ask your doc if metformin is right for you. My opinion is that it will help reduce the amount you need to increase your insulin.

Goodness. That was too many double negatives for this hour of the morning, wasn’t it?

Here’s the bottom line: Your body is changing. The shifting tides of hormones are driving your sugars upwards. As a type 1, you need to counter that with more insulin. Nothing else will do the job. Adding met will likely help the insulin work a little bit better, so you won’t have to increase the insulin as much as you would have to if you didn’t start the met. But is it worth it?

I can’t say. I don’t think it will make all that much of a difference, but I could be wrong. Everyone’s diabetes is different. But given met’s overall positive safety profile, I see no harm in trying it out.

However, if you do, I have one final word of caution before I let you go this morning. As you are starting perimenopause, your baby factory is starting to shut down. But don’t count it out just yet. Unless you want a late-life family add-on, you’ll need to use some contraception counter-measures.

As noted, Metformin is also used off-label as a fertility drug.

John, type 2 from Oregon, writes: Hello, I have type 2 diabetes. It is well controlled with A1C numbers 5.9 and lower. I would like to get off metformin or at least cut dosage in half. I bike ride almost every day. I ride about 16 miles daily, which takes about 60 minutes. My question is, would I have better blood sugar control if I did two 30-minute bike rides spaced out in the morning and evening as opposed to one 60-min bike ride daily?

Wil@Ask D’Mine answers: Seriously? Sixteen miles a day? Holy cow, I can’t even imagine. But good for you! And I see you’ve been rewarded for your efforts with an amazing A1C.

Most of the research I’ve seen on exercise indicates that numerous small bursts of activity are just as good as one big workout. Reverse correlating that, I think we can safely say that two shorter rides will have no benefit over one longer one.

Sorry.

But really, how much better do you want your control to be? Your control is admirable, to say the least. An A1C that low tells me that your diabetes is as tame as a drunken kitten that’s passed out after slurping up spilled tequila from the barroom floor. You’ve got a system in place that’s working. Why on earth would you want to screw with that? After all, metformin is possibly the safest drug on the planet.

Still, for reasons I don’t totally understand, many people like you want to use less of it (we type 1s, who need insulin just to stay alive, have a different relationship with medications). So here’s the deal: For all practical purposes, metformin doesn’t start working until you are taking 1,000 mg of it. So if you are already at 1,000 I doubt you will get away with cutting down and have it do any good. On the other hand, if you are taking 1,500 or 2,000 mg and have changed your life style since you started it, then you might be able to reduce it without waking up the kitten.

Get your doctor’s blessing first, but here’s what you need to do: Break out your meter and do a burst of intensive testing. And I don’t mean just at times of day when you know your sugar will be low. In addition to fasting tests, hit all your postprandial peaks—two hours after the first bite of each meal. Test for a week. Then take a break and go ahead and reduce your metformin. After one week on the reduced med, do a second blast of testing. Again, get a mix of fasting and post-meal readings.

Next, don’t trust your eyes. Plug the two sets of numbers into an Excel spreadsheet and see if the average has changed.

It’s a simple, safe, N of 1 clinical study that will tell you exactly how much good the met is doing you. If your sugars increase, you know that the met is an important part of your control plan, and then maybe you’ll feel better about taking it. If there’s no difference, then hell yeah, cut that baby down. It’s doing you no good!
