Tiny rant

okay so I just watched the newest season of the nine realms (I was dreading it cuz I lowkey didn't want to put myself through the cringiness of the show again but at the same time I wanted to laugh at it lmao) and oh boy I am just so mad. I already hated the show but like I guess for whatever reason this season just pushed me over the edge. Halfway through I was throwing up my hands in defeat and saying "THAT 'S IT I'M DONE" and walking away from my laptop (not because it was inherently 'bad', but it was just so boring I couldn't stand it). It wasn't from anything necessarily worse than the previous seasons, but rather than the fact that this series is still fucking greenlit. I mean it's just so bad- the character designs, the characters themselves, the story (which is okay at best), it's just bleh. anyway I had my own rewritten characters from when the show first came out (spite OCs, if you will), and I might bring these bad boys back. Idk but that's it haha

all i'm trying to say is evolution takes time. in my opinion, it does make sense that they look more or less the same.

yes, it feels a bit lazy because the models are literal copies of previous dragons, but at least it's sort of understandable?

i haven't gotten a chance to watch more than the first episode and whatever clips have been released in people's reviews of it, but i think something we should be focusing more on is the characters and plot sucking-

I've always praised the fact that Toothless' wings actually look large enough to carry his body:

I mean LOOK at that! I can easily imagine those allowing him to glide and flap hard enough to get him off the ground.

They look so thin. And his body looks so HEAVY. How do those keep him up??!

The only dragon I can think of right now is the Woolly Howl, but I've been informed that the fur is apparently just specialized scales. But I've drawn not one, not two, but THREE seperate Woolly Howls, so here's a little compilation of them :3

I watched a 5 hour long essay about httyd nine realms (after peacefully forgetting it existed for a few months) and the designs are so abysmal i just had to redesigned them to look more like the og dragons, + things i hate about them

The Night lights/ Thunder

His body does not have correct proportions. His face is way too human. The tail fin doesn't make any sense. The white markings, especially around his mouth make him look really weird. His wings look like they were struck by rigor mortis and they are way too small, the membrane is not connected correctly to the body.

The Mist twister/ Wu-Wei

The choice of color is horrible, but it could work wasn't it for the piss yellow they chose for their body. The design itself looks like it came from a rip-off rather than a main line show. Their heads are way too long and spherical. The fact that each wing is a different color is stupid and has never before happened in any httyd design. The hot and cold mist power is strange, instead i remade the heads so one looks more like a stoker class and shoots fire, the other is more tidal (inspired by the Scauldron) and spits water, together creating steam/mist

The Gembreaker/ Plowhorn

The pug of dragons. The face is too flat and eyes way too small and human looking. The beetle wings feel disconnected from the design, i went for more Gronkle like wings.

The Featherhide/ Feathers

The best design out of the bunch. Still feels more like a design from rescue riders (it literally looks like a songwing) than something that could be flying around with nadders and such. The head is way too round. I gave her the same head tendrils (or whatever you'd call them) like changewings have. The "feathers" are just spines that look like feathers.

The Deadly Spinner/ Webmaster

Literally the second worst design in that show (number one goes to the glass caster, that thing is literally just a goblin (why does it have a human nose and hair????)).

THE HEAD, THE BODY... Its all so cube, yet so sphere at the same time. I literally changed 3 things yet it looks like a completely different dragon. Also he's way too colorful for his design, there are 6 separate colors somewhere on him and it just makes it look like he has one million diseases and he shouldn't be allowed into public spaces.

Also the name for both the species and the dragon is stupid

The only way they could have made me watch httyd: the nine realms was if the creators brought back Ruffnut, confirming that she was immortal, and just let her wreck some shit

I saw this somewhere, don’t remember where, but it would have been SOOOO much better if the kids’ parents were archeologists instead of them researching a ravine for minerals so that it makes more sense that they’d be in a Viking village and researching it AND HAVING MORE CONVINCING TIES TO HICCUP AND THE GANG-

Okay so I'm thinking about The Nine Realms (for obvious reasons lol) and I think I heard or saw somewhere (this is totally not my original idea, but I don't remember where I got it) someone saying that it would make so much more sense and be so much better if TNR actuallyl took place ON New Berk years later and w the new kids discovering dragons and the hidden world due to their proximity w it.

I think this is SUCH an awesome idea and would honestly be so much better because it would give the show much stronger ties to the orginal series (imo) and open it up for a lot of cool references and callbacks that don't make sense. Why is there an arrowhead or wtv in the Hidden World w the strike class symbol on it? Why is Hiccup's diary in the Hidden World?? WTF?? They're not, they're hidden somewhere on New Berk.

That way it doesn't disrupt canon saying that they LEFT THE DRAGONS ALONE, and it feels less forced. The new kids could all be descendents of the gang, too. I know that having them be descendents w similar features or characteristics or wtv is REALLY far fetched after all of this time and I think that realistically it wouldn't be like that, but for a storytelling purpose I think it'd be okay.

And I think it's fine if Tom is a descendant of Hiccstrid, and all of the rest of the kids are somehow tied to other members of the gang, but I think it'd be REALLY funny if they all had different last names except whoever was related to the Jorgensons. Like the Jorgenson family pride in their name and their lineage just like,, transcended a thousand years and many many many many many generations. It just stuck bc they refused to give it up. (this is like actually the point of this post lol)

Anyway now I want to work on a proper TNR rewrite/reconceptualization with THIS premise and just see how it goes lol

Concept doodles of The Nine Realms dragons because I fell into spiral with those lmao. I have no idea what to do with Feather so I'm ruling her out for now lmao.

I feel that one of the main problems with D:TNR is that this original dragons are done in one style, dragons from previous series are done in another style and dragons from yet another (Bubblehorn is from some series for really young kids from what I know) are done in yet another style and the creators lump it all together.

And the fact that I'm not fond of The Nine Realms artstyle at all is a private opinion. Mine doesn't rally fit HTTYD universe either but I think it's not hard to translate these design so I hope it works anyway lol

I feel like two heads don't work for that dragon but I tried to roll with that.

I give them spinosaurous-like snouts bcuz I wanted to keep it round but non-deformed lookin' (lmao).

Catfish-like whiskers on both jaws and in front of eyes.

Knee bends forwards now (why do they bend backwards in canon design??? I don't understand)

More Zippleback-like legs and body.

I hate their colors and tried to improve it but my brain can't do colors either ಥ_ಥ I feel like it all crashes together...

Personal note: I don't like designs of animals who have colors 50/50 at all but I want them to be recognizable. Color pattern like this feel super unnatural unless it's mutation. Like those birds or butterflies who are half male, half female. It's also my personal headcanon for these two lol

I don't like pattern of their wings bit idk what to give them. I just don't want wings to be solid but different than body color, it just looks kinda awkward??

PLOWHORN

In my opinion, because only her wings are covered in armor they look out of place. Rumblehorns' armor looked more conected to it, because head also looked hard/armored. So I tried to connect her armor to her body a bit more

Horn is no longer made of crystal.

She doesn't grow crystals. Crystals grow on her because of her natural habitat

I give her a bit smaller head

Details of her unique wings. They are still made of skin and bones but folds in more bug-like style

BUBBLEHORN

Bodytype similiar to Terrible Terrors, maybe a bit shorter.

Horns like those of Deadly Nadder.

Eyes like parrots'. Idk why lol

Spikes and scales on legs and tail similiar to those of Night Fury
