How to Identify a True Sapphire Stone and Its Value?
When it comes to gemstones, few are as sought after and admired as the true sapphire stone. This precious gem is renowned for its striking blue hue, brilliance, and durability, making it a popular choice for jewelry pieces such as engagement rings and necklaces. However, identifying a genuine sapphire and understanding its value can be a challenge. In this post, we will guide you on how to spot a real sapphire and what factors influence the price of a sapphire stone.
Tumblr media
What Makes a True Sapphire Stone?
• Color and Clarity: The most defining feature of a true sapphire stone is its color. While sapphires come in various shades, the most prized ones exhibit a deep, vivid blue. A sapphire with little to no inclusions, or natural flaws, is considered more valuable, but some inclusions are acceptable as they signify natural origin.
• Durability: A Vivid Sapphire Store one of the hardest minerals on the planet, ranking just below diamonds. This means they are incredibly resistant to scratches and ideal for daily wear in rings, bracelets, and more.
• Origin of the Stone: The origin of a sapphire plays a big role in its authenticity. High-quality sapphires are often sourced from countries like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Madagascar. Always ask for certification to ensure you're purchasing a genuine sapphire stone.
Factors Affecting the Price of a Sapphire Stone
Several elements determine the price of a sapphire stone, and understanding them can help you make a well-informed purchase:
• Color: Sapphires with a deep, rich blue color typically fetch the highest prices. Stones with pale or overly dark colors are less valuable.
• Carat Weight: Like other gemstones, the weight of a sapphire significantly affects its price. Larger stones with high clarity are rare and, therefore, more expensive.
• Cut and Shape: The craftsmanship involved in cutting the sapphire can influence its final price. A well-cut stone will reflect light beautifully and enhance the stone's natural brilliance.
• Treatment: Many sapphires on the market undergo heat treatment to improve color and clarity. While treated sapphires are still valuable, untreated or natural stones are considered more valuable and can increase the price of a sapphire stone.
Why Invest in a True Sapphire Stone?
• Timeless Appeal: The true sapphire stone is not only stunning but also timeless, making it an excellent long-term investment. Its durability ensures that it can be passed down through generations without losing its beauty.
• Symbol of Prestige: Sapphires have long been associated with royalty and luxury. A sapphire ring or necklace is a symbol of prestige and sophistication, making it the perfect addition to any jewelry collection.
• Versatility: The true sapphire stone comes in various shapes, sizes, and shades, making it a versatile gem suitable for all kinds of jewelry. Whether you're looking for a statement piece or something subtle, the sapphire won't disappoint.
Conclusion
Investing in a true sapphire stone offers timeless beauty and prestige. By understanding the key factors that influence the price of a sapphire stone, such as color, clarity, and carat weight, you can ensure you're making a wise and valuable purchase. Explore our collection at Vivid Sapphire Store to find the perfect true sapphire stone for your jewelry collection today.

PERSONAL FINANCE Tips: How to reduce Family Costs

The goals were to understanding the way we spend money, does our expenditure drive the lifestyle I wanted and to understand what is the breakeven of our family budget (or said differently, how much money were a must-have every month). It was an amazing experience in terms of how many things we taught from that…

Erectile Dysfunction: A Concern for All Ages
Men of all ages can suffer from the widespread ailment known as erectile dysfunction (ED), which affects them not just physically but also emotionally and in their relationships. In this guide, we'll examine the various aspects of ED and look into the effectiveness of sildenafil citrate 50mg as a reliable treatment. It is crucial to comprehend the reasons, symptoms, and accessible solutions for those seeking reliable information and support.
Understanding Erectile Dysfunction
Impotence, another name for erectile dysfunction, is a disease characterized by a persistent inability to get and keep an erection strong enough for intercourse. This is a complex issue with numerous physiological and psychological facets.
Physiological contributors to ED often involve underlying health conditions. Blood flow to the genital area might be impeded by cardiovascular issues, including hypertension or atherosclerosis, which can impact the ability to achieve an erection. Diabetes is another prevalent physiological component that can cause circulation problems and damage to nerves. An additional factor contributing to ED may be hormonal abnormalities, including low testosterone levels.
Psychologically, erectile dysfunction is significantly influenced by stress, anxiety, and melancholy. The complex interactions between the mind and body can interfere with the regular physiological procedures that lead to and maintain an erection. An ED cycle can be self-perpetuating when performance anxiety, which is based on feelings of sexual inadequacy or bad experiences in the past, is present.
It is critical to realize that ED is not just a result of aging. Younger guys who smoke, drink too much alcohol, or use drugs may develop ED as a result of their lifestyle choices. In all age groups, emotional detachment, communication difficulties, and relationship problems can all be factors in eating disorders.
Understanding the complex interplay between physiological and psychological aspects is essential for both individuals with ED and those who provide care to them. A comprehensive strategy that considers the whole range of possible reasons makes professional advice even more critical and enables more effective responses.
Treating erectile dysfunction (ED) involves more than just addressing the symptoms. Identifying and managing the underlying causes is as important as promoting sexual health and well-being. By recognizing that ED can affect people of all ages, we can adopt a more inclusive approach to care. Whether the cause of ED is physiological or psychological, understanding the different aspects of the condition can enable people to make knowledgeable decisions about their health and seek appropriate interventions that are tailored to their unique circumstances.
The Impact of ED Across Age Groups
Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is often linked with aging, but it can affect people of all ages. In younger age groups, lifestyle factors like smoking, drinking too much alcohol, and not exercising activity can contribute to ED. In addition, psychological factors such as performance anxiety, societal pressures, and relationship issues can also play a significant role.
Recognizing that ED affects individuals at different stages of life is crucial for reducing stigma around the condition. This emphasizes the importance of comprehensive sexual education and proactive health measures to address ED at various stages of life.
Sildenafil citrate 50mg: A Trusted Solution
Sildenafil Citrate Tablets 50mg as an Effective Treatment
Sildenafil Citrate is one of the most often prescribed drugs for ED, and the 50mg dosage provides a well-rounded and efficient treatment. This substance enhances blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation; it is classified as a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor.
How Sildenafil Citrate Tablets Work?
Sildenafil Citrate, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, is instrumental in enhancing erectile function by targeting the PDE5 enzyme. It interferes with the fast breakdown of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) during sexual excitement, allowing penile smooth muscle relaxation to last longer. This action helps to initiate and maintain an erection by facilitating increased blood flow to the erectile tissues.
It's important to stress that although sildenafil citrate enhances the body's innate reaction to sexual stimulation, it doesn't cause erections on its own; instead, it needs sexual arousal to work. This complex understanding emphasizes how important it is to have a supportive connection with medical professionals to guarantee the safe and efficient use of drugs like sildenafil citrate to treat erectile dysfunction.
How to Use Sildenafil Citrate Tablets 50mg?
Consultation with a Healthcare Professional:-
Before taking sildenafil citrate 50mg tab, seeking a healthcare provider to identify the correct dosage and discuss any possible contraindications is essential. The prescribing decision will be based on a comprehensive medical history that includes current drugs and pre-existing illnesses.
Proper Administration:-
It is recommended to take sildenafil citrate tablets orally, preferably half an hour to an hour before having intercourse. You can take it with or without food, though fat-rich meals will make it less effective. A starting dosage of 50 mg is frequently advised for patients just beginning treatment, with modifications made according to each patient's reaction.
Potential Side Effects and Precautions
Although sildenafil citrate is usually well tolerated, there is a chance that it will have moderate side effects, including headache, flushing, or indigestion. It's critical to be aware of any possible drug interactions, particularly with nitrates. People with cardiovascular problems or other medical concerns should be cautious and let their doctor know.
The Final Words
Erectile Dysfunction (ED) emerges as a complex challenge affecting men across age groups, emphasizing the need for a nuanced and inclusive understanding of its causes and treatments. Suhagra 50mg Sildenafil Tablets, a widely recognized and reliable solution, provide hope for those aiming to reclaim control over their sexual health. Its efficacy in enhancing erectile function by addressing both physiological and psychological aspects underscores its significance in the spectrum of available treatments.
However, it's crucial to emphasize the importance of seeking professional advice for tailored guidance in navigating the journey toward overcoming ED. This comprehensive approach, coupled with the potential of Suhagra 50mg, empowers individuals to pursue a fulfilling and satisfying sexual life with the support of healthcare professionals.

"The Biden administration on Thursday [August 15, 2024] released prices for the first 10 prescription drugs that were subject to landmark negotiations between drugmakers and Medicare, a milestone in a controversial process that aims to make costly medications more affordable for older Americans.
The government estimates that the new negotiated prices for the medications will lead to around $6 billion in net savings for the Medicare program in 2026 alone when they officially go into effect, or 22% net savings overall. That is based on the estimated savings the prices would have produced if they were in effect in 2023, senior administration officials told reporters Wednesday.
The Biden administration also expects the new prices to save Medicare enrollees $1.5 billion in out-of-pocket costs in 2026 alone.
“For so many people, being able to afford these drugs will mean the difference between debilitating illness and living full lives,” Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, told reporters. “These negotiated prices. They’re not just about costs. They are about helping to make sure that your father, your grandfather or you can live longer, healthier.”
It comes one day before the second anniversary of President Joe Biden’s signature Inflation Reduction Act, which gave Medicare the power to directly hash out drug prices with manufacturers for the first time in the federal program’s nearly 60-year history.
Here are the negotiated prices for a 30-day supply of the 10 drugs, along with their list prices based on 2023 prescription fills, according to a Biden administration fact sheet Thursday.
What Medicare and beneficiaries pay for a drug is often much less than the list price, which is what a wholesaler, distributor or other direct purchaser paid a manufacturer for a medication before any discounts...
Tumblr media
The administration unveiled the first set of medications selected for the price talks in August 2023, kicking off a nearly yearlong negotiation period that ended at the beginning of the month.
The final prices give drugmakers, which fiercely oppose the policy, a glimpse of how much revenue they could expect to lose over the next few years. It also sets a precedent for the additional rounds of Medicare drug price negotiations, which will kick off in 2025 and beyond.
First 10 drugs subject to Medicare price negotiations
Eliquis, made by Bristol Myers Squibb, is used to prevent blood clotting to reduce the risk of stroke.
Jardiance, made by Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly, is used to lower blood sugar for people with Type 2 diabetes.
Xarelto, made by Johnson & Johnson, is used to prevent blood clotting, to reduce the risk of stroke.
Januvia, made by Merck, is used to lower blood sugar for people with Type 2 diabetes.
Farxiga, made by AstraZeneca, is used to treat Type 2 diabetes, heart failure and chronic kidney disease.
Entresto, made by Novartis, is used to treat certain types of heart failure.
Enbrel, made by Amgen, is used to treat autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Imbruvica, made by AbbVie and J&J, is used to treat different types of blood cancers.
Stelara, made by Janssen, is used to treat autoimmune diseases such as Crohn’s disease.
Fiasp and NovoLog, insulins made by Novo Nordisk.
In a statement Thursday, Biden called the new negotiated prices a “historic milestone” made possible because of the Inflation Reduction Act. He specifically touted Vice President Kamala Harris’ tiebreaking vote for the law in the Senate in 2022.
Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, said in a statement that she was proud to cast that deciding vote, adding there is more work to be done to lower health-care costs for Americans.
“Today’s announcement will be lifechanging for so many of our loved ones across the nation, and we are not stopping here,” Harris said in a statement Thursday, noting that additional prescription drugs will be selected for future rounds of negotiations."

Is there any difference between different brands of mineral/bottled waters like Evian, Perrier, etc.? If so what are they and how significant are they?
When it comes to quenching our thirst, there's an abundant array of mineral and bottled water brands to choose from. From the iconic Evian to the bubbly Perrier, each brand claims to offer a unique and refreshing experience. But have you ever wondered if there are any significant differences among these brands? In this article, we'll delve into the variations between popular mineral/bottled water brands and explore their significance.
Source of Water: One of the primary factors that differentiate various brands of mineral/bottled waters is the source of water they use. Each brand carefully selects specific natural springs or aquifers, resulting in variations in taste and mineral content. For instance, Evian originates from the pristine French Alps, while Perrier sources its water from a naturally carbonated spring in Vergèze, France.
Mineral Composition: The mineral composition of water varies from brand to brand, giving each its distinct flavor profile. Some brands boast higher levels of minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium, while others may have lower mineral content. These differences can impact the taste and potential health benefits associated with the water.
Carbonation: Another key differentiating factor is the carbonation level in bottled waters. While some brands offer still (non-carbonated) water, others provide varying levels of carbonation. Perrier, for example, is renowned for its effervescent bubbles, which add a unique texture and refreshing experience.
Filtration and Purification: The methods used for filtration and purification can vary among different brands. Some brands utilize advanced filtration techniques, such as reverse osmosis or distillation, to remove impurities and enhance the taste. Others might employ a simpler process, like micron filtration or ozonation. These variations in purification methods can influence the overall quality and clarity of the water.
Packaging and Sustainability: Packaging choices also play a role in differentiating brands. Some prioritize eco-friendly packaging materials, such as recyclable bottles or packaging made from renewable resources. Others focus on convenient packaging options, like smaller-sized bottles for on-the-go consumption.
Significance of Differences: The significance of these differences largely depends on personal preferences and individual needs. Some people might have a more refined palate and appreciate the subtle variations in taste, while others may prioritize the health benefits associated with specific mineral compositions. It's important to note that all reputable bottled water brands adhere to stringent quality standards to ensure the safety and purity of their products.
Conclusion: While various mineral/bottled water brands like Evian, Perrier, and others share the common purpose of hydrating and refreshing, there are notable differences that set them apart. Factors such as the water source, mineral composition, carbonation, filtration, and packaging choices contribute to a unique experience for each brand. Ultimately, the significance of these differences depends on individual preferences and requirements. So, the next time you reach for a bottle of water, take a moment to savor the distinctive qualities of your chosen brand and enjoy the refreshment it provides.

Buying a Solar Panel System in Brisbane Can Cut Your Electricity Bills by Over $1400 a Year
The Sunshine State of Queensland leads the way in solar energy generation. With over half a million roof top systems installed, Brisbane is a popular choice for households who want to reduce their environmental footprint and save money on electricity costs.
Buying a solar energy Brisbane can be a big financial decision. However, it’s a wise one that will pay for itself in the long run. The best solar panels are designed to last for 25 years or more, while the installation is low-maintenance and can be done at a relatively affordable price.
A Solar Panel System in Brisbane Can Cut Your Electricity Bills by Over $1400 a Year
The price of electricity is rising faster than the cost of gas, causing businesses and homeowners to search for ways to control their energy expenses. The average Australian household spends around $1400 per year on their power bills, and in Queensland, this figure can be more than twice that amount.
When you switch to solar power, your energy bills are reduced – and you can even get credits for the excess power you produce in the form of feed-in tariffs. In addition, you can help reduce your carbon emissions by switching to solar.
If you’re considering purchasing a solar panel system in Brisbane, you may be wondering which provider is best for you. We’ve put together a list of some of the most well-known and reliable solar companies in Australia to help you find the perfect fit.
Bradford Energy
This Brisbane-based retailer has been in business for more than 80 years, and offers a range of solar products for both residential and commercial properties. Its products include solar panels, storage units and inverters, as well as monitoring systems.
Its 'Solar Pack' is an ideal option for first-time solar installers, as it includes everything you need to get started with your system. It also has a range of off-grid options for those who need to be completely independent from the power grid.
REA Solar
This Queensland-based provider is a great option for people looking for a new roof top solar system, and is accredited with the Clean Energy Council. Its products include LG and Tesla solar systems, as well as microinverters.
They offer a free quote to customers in Australia, and the prices they show on their site can be quite competitive. Their prices are based on the number of panels and their capacity.
You can calculate the cost of a solar power system in Brisbane by visiting their website and entering some details about your home. This information will be used to generate a quote for the size of system you need.
The Solar Panel Installer in Brisbane You Need to Choose
It’s important to choose a solar company that has been around for a while and takes pride in their work. This will ensure you receive the best value for your money.
There are many national solar companies that advertise on television, the internet and in newspapers. These companies often sell their solar systems at the lowest possible prices, but they’re not designed to last as long as a quality solar panel system.
Certified Solar specializes in providing solar energy and energy storage system installations for commercial and residential projects. We transform our clients’ energy needs by helping them drastically reduce and eliminate their electricity bills, aiming for the maximum return on each investment.

I used to work at JoAnn's and let me give you a tip. Don't buy fabric there if you can help it. It's overpriced low quality crap. You can absolutely find fabric for just as cheap online and if you're a "have to touch it before I know if I'll hate it or not" person lots of online places sell samples.
Case in point: Robert Kaufman Kona solids. I've seen claims online that the Kona solid quilting cotton, which is the highest quality quilting cotton solids JoAnn's sells, is different and lower quality than the Kona cotton you can get at a quilt shop. I can't speak to the validity of those claims but I 100% would not be surprised if it were true. But let's set that aside and just see how JoAnn's prices measure up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see, the regular price at JoAnn's is $9.99. The regular price at this random quilting online store I spent 20 seconds on duckduckgo to find is $7.95. Sure, the sale price is 15¢ cheaper at JoAnn's. But JoAnn's is constantly playing this "our fabrics are cheap because they're on sale! Don't look at how much they regularly cost anywhere else" psychological warfare game which I do NOT appreciate.
I'm sure if you looked harder than the 20 seconds I spent on duckduckgo you could find Kona cotton for cheaper than JoAnn's has it and you wouldn't have to wonder about the quality claims. And all their fabric is like this. Maybe a decade ago it was a good deal but now? There's a reason they've gone bankrupt.
Just because I could, I compared fabric wholesale direct's price for solid color polyester Jersey knit fabric, which is regularly priced at $5.99 and is currently on sale for $5.09. JoAnn's comparable fabric starts again at $9.99/yard and that fabric is currently on sale for $6.99. There are 10 colors of the JoAnn's $6.99 fabric and 45 colors of the FWD $5.09 fabric FWD does free shipping over $99 and flat rate shipping at $7.95 for anything below that. Depending on how much you buy, you'll potentially be paying the same or less for the FWD fabric and 1. It's probably higher quality and 2. There's 4 times as many color options.
JoAnn's is good for if you need less than a yard and have the time and ability to go to the store in person. And yeah, if you're shopping in person, you don't have to pay shipping. But the quality of all their fabric is low and the "sale" prices are around the same as a place with higher quality fabric.
I buy embroidery floss and thread at JoAnn's cuz embroidery floss is cheaper in person than on DMC's website and you can't trust product photos of thread to be color accurate. And I buy sewing notions there sometimes cuz it's convenient. But even the scissors I spent $30 on there a decade ago (who knows how much they are now) were $17 at Walmart when I lost the first pair and had to replace them 4 years later.
Also they treat their employees like shit and currently no one besides store managers gets health insurance through them because the only full time position in their stores is the store manager. And even before the bankruptcy they shortstaffed and did everything in their power to avoid paying for benefits and overtime. It was the worst job I ever had and that's saying something because I worked at Walmart and had a "this creepy guy went to JAIL over what he did to me" experience there.

Leveraged buyouts are not like mortgages
Tumblr media
I'm coming to DEFCON! On FRIDAY (Aug 9), I'm emceeing the EFF POKER TOURNAMENT (noon at the Horseshoe Poker Room), and appearing on the BRICKED AND ABANDONED panel (5PM, LVCC - L1 - HW1–11–01). On SATURDAY (Aug 10), I'm giving a keynote called "DISENSHITTIFY OR DIE! How hackers can seize the means of computation and build a new, good internet that is hardened against our asshole bosses' insatiable horniness for enshittification" (noon, LVCC - L1 - HW1–11–01).
Tumblr media
Here's an open secret: the confusing jargon of finance is not the product of some inherent complexity that requires a whole new vocabulary. Rather, finance-talk is all obfuscation, because if we called finance tactics by their plain-language names, it would be obvious that the sector exists to defraud the public and loot the real economy.
Take "leveraged buyout," a polite name for stealing a whole goddamned company:
Identify a company that owns valuable assets that are required for its continued operation, such as the real-estate occupied by its outlets, or even its lines of credit with suppliers;
Approach lenders (usually banks) and ask for money to buy the company, offering the company itself (which you don't own!) as collateral on the loan;
Offer some of those loaned funds to shareholders of the company and convince a key block of those shareholders (for example, executives with large stock grants, or speculators who've acquired large positions in the company, or people who've inherited shares from early investors but are disengaged from the operation of the firm) to demand that the company be sold to the looters;
Call a vote on selling the company at the promised price, counting on the fact that many investors will not participate in that vote (for example, the big index funds like Vanguard almost never vote on motions like this), which means that a minority of shareholders can force the sale;
Once you own the company, start to strip-mine its assets: sell its real-estate, start stiffing suppliers, fire masses of workers, all in the name of "repaying the debts" that you took on to buy the company.
This process has its own euphemistic jargon, for example, "rightsizing" for layoffs, or "introducing efficiencies" for stiffing suppliers or selling key assets and leasing them back. The looters – usually organized as private equity funds or hedge funds – will extract all the liquid capital – and give it to themselves as a "special dividend." Increasingly, there's also a "divi recap," which is a euphemism for borrowing even more money backed by the company's assets and then handing it to the private equity fund:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/09/17/divi-recaps/#graebers-ghost
If you're a Sopranos fan, this will all sound familiar, because when the (comparatively honest) mafia does this to a business, it's called a "bust-out":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bust_Out
The mafia destroys businesses on a onesy-twosey, retail scale; but private equity and hedge funds do their plunder wholesale.
It's how they killed Red Lobster:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/05/23/spineless/#invertebrates
And it's what they did to hospitals:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/28/5000-bats/#charnel-house
It's what happened to nursing homes, Armark, private prisons, funeral homes, pet groomers, nursing homes, Toys R Us, The Olive Garden and Pet Smart:

It's what happened to the housing co-ops of Cooper Village, Texas energy giant TXU, Old Country Buffet, Harrah's and Caesar's:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/05/14/billionaire-class-solidarity/#club-deals
And it's what's slated to happen to 2.9m Boomer-owned US businesses employing 32m people, whose owners are nearing retirement:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/16/schumpeterian-terrorism/#deliberately-broken
Now, you can't demolish that much of the US productive economy without attracting some negative attention, so the looter spin-machine has perfected some talking points to hand-wave away the criticism that borrowing money using something you don't own as collateral in order to buy it and wreck it is obviously a dishonest (and potentially criminal) destructive practice.
The most common one is that borrowing money against an asset you don't own is just like getting a mortgage. This is such a badly flawed analogy that it is really a testament to the efficacy of the baffle-em-with-bullshit gambit to convince us all that we're too stupid to understand how finance works.
Sure: if I put an offer on your house, I will go to my credit union and ask the for a mortgage that uses your house as collateral. But the difference here is that you own your house, and the only way I can buy it – the only way I can actually get that mortgage – is if you agree to sell it to me.
Owner-occupied homes typically have uncomplicated ownership structures. Typically, they're owned by an individual or a couple. Sometimes they're the property of an estate that's divided up among multiple heirs, whose relationship is mediated by a will and a probate court. Title can be contested through a divorce, where disputes are settled by a divorce court. At the outer edge of complexity, you get things like polycules or lifelong roommates who've formed an LLC s they can own a house among several parties, but the LLC will have bylaws, and typically all those co-owners will be fully engaged in any sale process.
Leveraged buyouts don't target companies with simple ownership structures. They depend on firms whose equity is split among many parties, some of whom will be utterly disengaged from the firm's daily operations – say, the kids of an early employee who got a big stock grant but left before the company grew up. The looter needs to convince a few of these "owners" to force a vote on the acquisition, and then rely on the idea that many of the other shareholders will simply abstain from a vote. Asset managers are ubiquitous absentee owners who own large stakes in literally every major firm in the economy. The big funds – Vanguard, Blackrock, State Street – "buy the whole market" (a big share in every top-capitalized firm on a given stock exchange) and then seek to deliver returns equal to the overall performance of the market. If the market goes up by 5%, the index funds need to grow by 5%. If the market goes down by 5%, then so do those funds. The managers of those funds are trying to match the performance of the market, not improve on it (by voting on corporate governance decisions, say), or to beat it (by only buying stocks of companies they judge to be good bets):
https://pluralistic.net/2022/03/17/shareholder-socialism/#asset-manager-capitalism
Your family home is nothing like one of these companies. It doesn't have a bunch of minority shareholders who can force a vote, or a large block of disengaged "owners" who won't show up when that vote is called. There isn't a class of senior managers – Chief Kitchen Officer! – who have been granted large blocks of options that let them have a say in whether you will become homeless.
Now, there are homes that fit this description, and they're a fucking disaster. These are the "heirs property" homes, generally owned by the Black descendants of enslaved people who were given the proverbial 40 acres and a mule. Many prosperous majority Black settlements in the American South are composed of these kinds of lots.
Given the historical context – illiterate ex-slaves getting property as reparations or as reward for fighting with the Union Army – the titles for these lands are often muddy, with informal transfers from parents to kids sorted out with handshakes and not memorialized by hiring lawyers to update the deeds. This has created an irresistible opportunity for a certain kind of scammer, who will pull the deeds, hire genealogists to map the family trees of the original owners, and locate distant descendants with homeopathically small claims on the property. These descendants don't even know they own these claims, don't even know about these ancestors, and when they're offered a few thousand bucks for their claim, they naturally take it.
Now, armed with a claim on the property, the heirs property scammers force an auction of it, keeping the process under wraps until the last instant. If they're really lucky, they're the only bidder and they can buy the entire property for pennies on the dollar and then evict the family that has lived on it since Reconstruction. Sometimes, the family will get wind of the scam and show up to bid against the scammer, but the scammer has deep capital reserves and can easily win the auction, with the same result:

A similar outrage has been playing out for years in Hawai'i, where indigenous familial claims on ancestral lands have been diffused through descendants who don't even know they're co-owner of a place where their distant cousins have lived since pre-colonial times. These descendants are offered small sums to part with their stakes, which allows the speculator to force a sale and kick the indigenous Hawai'ians off their family lands so they can be turned into condos or hotels. Mark Zuckerberg used this "quiet title and partition" scam to dispossess hundreds of Hawai'ian families:
https://archive.is/g1YZ4
Heirs property and quiet title and partition are a much better analogy to a leveraged buyout than a mortgage is, because they're ways of stealing something valuable from people who depend on it and maintain it, and smashing it and selling it off.
Strip away all the jargon, and private equity is just another scam, albeit one with pretensions to respectability. Its practitioners are ripoff artists. You know the notorious "carried interest loophole" that politicians periodically discover and decry? "Carried interest" has nothing to do with the interest on a loan. The "carried interest" rule dates back to 16th century sea-captains, and it refers to the "interest" they had in the cargo they "carried":
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/29/writers-must-be-paid/#carried-interest
Private equity managers are like sea captains in exactly the same way that leveraged buyouts are like mortgages: not at all.
And it's not like private equity is good to its investors: scams like "continuation funds" allow PE looters to steal all the money they made from strip mining valuable companies, so they show no profits on paper when it comes time to pay their investors:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/20/continuation-fraud/#buyout-groups
Those investors are just as bamboozled as we are, which is why they keep giving more money to PE funds. Today, the "dry powder" (uninvested money) that PE holds has reached an all-time record high of $2.62 trillion – money from pension funds and rich people and sovereign wealth funds, stockpiled in anticipation of buying and destroying even more profitable, productive, useful businesses:
https://www.institutionalinvestor.com/article/2di1vzgjcmzovkcea8f0g/portfolio/private-equitys-dry-powder-mountain-reaches-record-height
The practices of PE are crooked as hell, and it's only the fact that they use euphemisms and deceptive analogies to home mortgages that keeps them from being shut down. The more we strip away the bullshit, the faster we'll be able to kill this cancer, and the more of the real economy we'll be able to preserve.

"Lead is a neurotoxin; it causes premature deaths and lifelong negative effects. It’s said “there is no safe level of lead exposure” — as far as we know, any lead causes damage, and it just gets worse the more exposure there is.
After a 20-year, worldwide campaign, in 2021 Algeria became the final country to end leaded gasoline in cars — something the US phased out in 1996. That should make a huge difference to environmental lead levels. But lots of sources remain, from car batteries to ceramics...
Bangladesh phased out leaded gasoline in the 1990s. But high blood lead levels have remained. Why? When researchers Stephen Luby and Jenny Forsyth, doing work in rural Bangladesh, tried to isolate the source, it turned out to be a surprising one: lead-adulterated turmeric.
Turmeric, a spice in common use for cooking in South Asia and beyond, is yellow, and adding a pigment made of lead chromate makes for bright, vibrant colors — and better sales. Buyers of the adulterated turmeric were slowly being poisoned...
But there’s also good news: A recent paper studying lead in turmeric in Bangladesh found that researchers and the Bangladeshi government appear to have driven lead out of the turmeric business in Bangladesh.
How Bangladesh got serious about lead poisoning
The researchers who’d isolated turmeric as the primary cause of high blood lead levels —working for the nonprofit International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh — went to meet with government officials. They collected samples nationwide and published a 2019 follow-up paper on the extent of the problem. Bangladesh’s Food Safety Authority got involved.
They settled on a two-part approach, starting with an education campaign to warn people about the dangers of lead. Once people had been warned that lead adulteration was illegal, they followed up with raids to analyze turmeric and fine sellers who were selling adulterated products.
They posted tens of thousands of fliers informing people about the risks of lead. They got coverage in the news. And then they swept through the markets with X-ray fluorescence analyzers, which detect lead. They seized contaminated products and fined sellers.
According to the study released earlier this month, this worked spectacularly well. “The proportion of market turmeric samples containing detectable lead decreased from 47 percent pre-intervention in 2019 to 0 percent in 2021,” the study found. And the vanishing of lead from turmeric had an immediate and dramatic effect on blood lead levels in the affected populations, too: “Blood lead levels dropped a median of 30 percent.”
The researchers who helped make that result happen are gearing up for similar campaigns in other areas where spices are adulterated.
The power of problem-solving
...When the Food Safety Authority showed up at the market and started issuing fines for lead adulteration, it stopped being a savvy business move to add lead. Purchasers who were accustomed to unnatural lead-colored turmeric learned how to recognize non-adulterated turmeric. And so lead went from ubiquitous to nearly nonexistent in the space of just a few years.
That’s a better world for everyone, from turmeric wholesalers to vulnerable kids — all purchased at a shockingly low price. The paper published this month concludes, “with credible information, appropriate technology, and good enough governance, the adulteration of spices can be stopped.”
There’s still a lot more to be done. India, like Bangladesh, has widespread adulteration of turmeric. And safety testing will have to remain vigilant to prevent lead in Bangladesh from creeping back into the spice supply.
But for all those caveats, it’s rare to see such fast, decisive action on a major health problem — and impressive to see it immediately rewarded with such a dramatic improvement in blood lead levels and health outcomes. It’s a reminder that things can change, and can change very quickly, as long as people care, and as long as they act."
