I kinda want to make some ballistics gel. The pre-made synthetic stuff is nice but it's really expensive. A Clear Ballistics FBI spec gel block that's 6X6X16 is $90 and ideally I should be testing with 2 blocks.

Using bulk unflavored gelatine I'd need 2 1/2 gallons of gel to make a block that size. It's been a long time since I've looked for it but it's probably going to be close to $50 per block. I can look up a recipe online to make a block of gel but without a pellet gun and a chronograph there's absolutely no way to tell if it's up to par with FBI specs.

Being CLEAN-SHAVEN is much cheaper than sporting a beard.

Getting rid of that stupid beard is one of the best ways to beat the inflation, kick it right in the nuts.

It's such a low maintenance formula that it just boggles my mind why don't more people get rid of that garbage hair on their faces.

These are the things you need for a barebones shaving experience.

A shaving brush which costs less than $3 (you can pick one at a discount store for less than $1),

2) A safety razor is a one-time investment. Shouldn't cost you more than $10 but if you want to splurge, no one is stopping you from enjoying a bit of luxury. Still the average safety razor should last a lifetime, and you could pass it to your adult boys.

3) And of course, you would need a huge stock of stainless steel blades. I always buy in bulk so a small carton of 25 safety razors (25x5 = 125 blades) by Gillette easily lasts me a year or a year and a half. That's less money than buying an avocado toast and a Faggocino at Starbucks. Hint: I haven't set foot in a Starbucks in over 20 years as their coffee stinks big hairy balls.

If you're manly enough to split the blade with your own hands without bleeding yourself, you can use both sides of each blade 3-4 times each. I have never cut myself using each half of the blade.

I always prefer blades that are platinum coated. Titanium even better. Derby is one of my favorite brands but you could never go wrong with Gillette.

I am not a big fan of disposable razors as I find them a waste of money. You can go for one if you're too chicken to split a blade with your own fingers. Also, if you've never shaven before, disposables are a good start.

4) An aftershave lotion or balm.

I prefer Paco Rabane. The tingling feeling of a cool aftershave after you just removed all that hairy mess is the best feeling you can enjoy every morning. I also recommend an Old Spice although I'm bored of its soapy aroma, but it's still considered a classic. You can also go with a Proraso, Fulton & Roark, and Brickell.

An aftershave lotion is the most amazing product you can apply to your face after a shower. Unfortunately, you have to be a clean-shaven man (or at least a mustached man) to enjoy it. The most awesome product in the world is completely useless to bearded manginas, children and women.

Now let's look at the products used by bearded men:

Beard oil: They look like snake oils to me. They're supposed to promote beard growth. Why would I want one? I can grow a fine beard already (God forbid!).

Beard softener creams: Pass! What you really need is a disinfectant to get rid of all those lice and bacteria in your hairy bush.

Beard wax: I could use that to polish my shoes I suppose.

Beard trimmer (electric): I just hate that zzzzz sound. Well, bearded weirdoes, you could use that trimmer to get rid of your entire hairy mess. Every thought of it?

Beard color: of course, who wants to look old with grey hair. You'd never need those expensive dyes if you never had a beard in the first place.

Beard conditioners: now you're taking the piss. Seriously. I don't wish to understand what that conditioner is supposed to do.

Beard styling gels: now that is enough. I don't want to discuss the products used by bearded men anymore. This is a blog for pogonophobia, it's about the intense dislike I have for beards.

Clearly, bearded men waste a lot of time and money on stupid useless products which cost a small fortune. But maybe I don't know any better - I am your friendly neighborhood harmless POGONOPHOBE who dislikes the very sight of beards.

Like bees, Fireworms live in hives and have a queen. Regular Fireworms are very different from the queens. While normal ones are tiny, around 2 feet long, queens are usually 80 to 90 feet long.

There can only be one queen in a hive, so new Fireworm queens leave and start their own as soon as they're fully grown.

Fireworms make their nests in dark caverns with complex tunnel systems. Fireworm queens seem to do the bulk of the work, making the most firecomb and generally telling the normal ones what to do, as they are far less intelligent than the queens.

Queens will stop at nothing to retrieve stolen firecomb gel. The only way to take it and come out alive is if you use smoke to calm the fireworms down first, much as you would do with bees.

Fireworms almost always travel in large groups consisting of their hive-mates, which makes them incredibly dangerous despite their small size. Some Fireworms, however, leave the nest and live more "normal" lives, only coming back every once in a while to replenish their fire and give some firecomb gel to the hive.

To escape the cold months, Fireworms regularly migrate to warmer climates.

Fire A Fireworm's skin can heat up to extremely hot temperatures that allow it to burn or set aflame almost anything it touches. They also emit light when their skin heats up and can become shockingly bright, which they often use as a beacon to help guide lost Fireworms back to the nest.

Cold weather is uninhabitable for Fireworms, as it sucks out their heat and renders them not only defenseless, but in danger of freezing as well.

Fireworms can combine their fire with that of the Monstrous Nightmare - and possibly other Stoker Class dragons as well - to create a force field-like blast that not only takes down their opponents, but rejuvenates the participants' strength and health.

Venom Fireworms are capable of injecting potent venom into their enemies with their tongues. A queen carries so much venom that they're able to take down an enemy in a single stroke. However, this venom is not poisonous to Stoker Class dragons, instead reigniting their inner fire if they have worn it out.

Honey...but FIRE Regular Fireworms create a wax-like substance called firecomb, which they use to construct their hives. They also make a liquid version, called firecomb gel, which they eat to produce their intense heat and fire power, the queens needing a constant intake to maintain their levels of energy output. They seal firecomb gel within fircomb containers, much like bees do with honey.

Drottning Queens produce a hormonal ooze called "drottning", which is produced from glands under their tongues and fed to female Fireworm larvae to turn them into queens. Drottning causes the female to grow much larger than the average Fireworm, and gain increased strength, the ability to lay eggs and produce drottning of her own, and heightened intelligence. The more drottning a female larva consumes, the larger and more powerful they become.

Training Regular Fireworms are usually only trained as light sources or helpers in mischief. As for queens, they are highly aggressive and protective, making them hard to approach, but once trained they treat their riders as one of their own. Simply show a Fireworm queen that you are gentle, responsible, and pose no threat to their nest, as well as help her with her duties, and she will accept and respect you.

In Conclusion If you want to fight, get a queen, however you will have to deal with a nest at some point in the future. These dragons are best for bee-keepers or bee lovers in general.

Fly Tying Friday - Working With Foam

Sheets of inexpensive closed-cell foam have long been used for fly tying. This versatile material can be found everywhere and can create an endless variety of flies and bugs for warm water fly fishing. Foam sheets are available in a wide range of colors and thicknesses. Although a relatively easy material to find, sometimes finding the right color or thickness can be a challenge.

Foam is foam, right?

Is there a difference between the foam you see marketed as "fly foam" in your local fly shop and the stuff you find in the isles of your local craft store or Walmart? In some cases, yes! I once wrote something to the contrary, and my readers called me out on it! There seems to be a wide range of inconsistencies in the quality of foam that is out there.

The foam I have picked up in fly shops over the years seems to be denser and a little more durable than most of the stuff found in craft stores. That being said, most craft store foam will work just fine for your fly tying needs. One benefit of patronizing your local fly shops is you can also find different kinds of foam like a product called Chochlette’s Loco Foam which has a wild, multi-color, metallic finish on one side of the foam. You can also find foam of varying thickness from 1mm sheets of foam for tiny bugs or indicators on larger flies to big blocks used for popper bodies. The only way we can keep these places around is to spend a little money in them from time to time! If decide to go with your local craft store variety of foam products just be sure to inspect it closely to be sure it meets your needs.

So to sum it up, all foam sheets are not created equal, but most will work just fine for your fly tying needs. I did not pay much attention to the differences until I started mass producing bodies for my Triangle Bug pattern. Some foam sheets (denser ones) cut better than others, and sometimes one particular color performed better than others. I am not sure if this is a result of the dying or manufacturing process. If you look through the stacks of foam in your local craft store, you will see the differences for yourself. Over time I have learned to pick out foam sheets that suit my needs as a fly tier. 

Of course, foam sheets are not your only options. It is possible to find precut bodies that only need to be lashed to the hook. My favorites are bodies designed to tie bugs and spiders. They come pre-formed in a variety of sizes. I only use two colors black and white, coloring the white foam anyway I want.

Tips for Fly Tying With Foam

Foam is a versatile material that is easy to work with, but there are a few things that make your fly tying go a little smoother when working with it.

Thread: All thread is not created equal when working with foam. Some threads work better than others when it comes to working with foam. I prefer a thread that I can flatten out to reduce the possibility of cutting the foam. When you untwist the thread, you flatten it increasing its surface area and reducing the thread's potential to slice through the foam. Fine corded threads can cut through thin foam like a hot knife through butter. 

If you don't have a thread that will flatten, you can reduce this risk by using a heavier thread. Fortunately, when tying warm water flies, we are not as concerned about bulk and build-up when tying trout flies. 

A thicker thread has other benefits besides not cutting through the foam. A heavier thread will allow you to compress the foam easier and with fewer thread wraps. Also, the thread will not break as easily when applying the tension necessary to do this.

My thread of choice for working with foam is Semperfli 6/0 Classic Waxed Thread. It has all of the properties I mentioned, and it comes in a wide range of colors.

Thread Control: When working with foam, the proper use of thread tension is essential. At times light thread tension is needed to softly compress the foam, increasing the pressure with subsequent wraps. Doing this coaxes the foam into position without cutting or distorting it.

Use of Glue:  Superglue (Cyanoacrylate adhesive) and glues designed explicitly for foam are useful in fly tying. Superglue works well for fusing pieces of foam together and setting various components of the fly in place. Both thin liquid types of glue and gels have their uses when fly tying with foam. 

When creating stacked foam bodies made of different foam colors, I will use glue designed specifically for foam. It is easier to apply over a large surface and dries a little slower. I find it easier to glue entire foam sheets together then cut them to shape rather than layering the foam on the fly. If you are not tying dozens of flies at a time, it may make more sense to eliminate this step and stack your foam on the fly as you build it.  If you don’t want to be bothered with all of this you can find laminated foam that combines two or more colors together, eliminating the fuss and mess of gluing them together yourself.

I prefer to use superglue in a bottle with a brush applicator when working with foam. I use so much of the stuff I had a friend of mine make me a wooden holder that prevents the bottle from tipping over (which makes an awful mess) and allows me to open and close it with one hand. This holder was once a beautiful looking accessory on my fly tying desk, but it looks pretty gnarly these days as it is covered with dried specks of super glue!

Choosing The Right Foam:  As I mentioned earlier, all foam is not created equal. Look for foam that is dense and harder to compress. This type of foam will produce better floating, more durable flies. Recently I discovered the foam currently being offered by Semperfli. This foam looks and behaves a little differently than your basic craft store foam. At first glance, it appears to have a more open cell structure and seems somewhat fragile. This is not the case!  While the foam is lighter than other foam of comparable thickness, it is tough stuff! It compresses easily and is a real pleasure to tie with. I have some on the way to the shop, so check it out when it arrives!

Cutting Foam: A quality cutting mat is essential for cutting out foam shapes for fly tying. I use a large one on the surface of my fly tying desk. A simple exacto-style knife and a straight edge such as a thin metal ruler are the best tools for the job. If you are cutting a lot of foam, a paper cutter from your local office supply store works great for making uniformly sized strips of foam.

I often use custom foam cutters to create different shapes for fly tying. In my opinion, the foam cutters made by River Road Creations are the best out there. They have a wide variety of shapes and sizes available. Lately, they have been a little challenging to come by due to COVID-19's effect on the manufacturing world. Coloring Foam:  If you can't find the exact color of foam you what for your flies, the good news is that you can easily color it with permanent markers. The color may wear a little thin with repeated dunkings in water if you don't lock it in, but I doubt the fish care. I use Loon Soft Head Finish on flies that I apply color to in situations where I don’t want it to fade. It dries transparent and flexible and will not cause your colors to run if you have drawn an intricate pattern.

It should be noted that all of the foam we have discussed in this article is of the closed-cell variety. Closed-cell foam floats indefinitely even if waterlogged. There are open-cell foams out there but they are not too common. If you come across some considering adding some to the material stockpile as well. They make great slow-sinking sponge spiders that bluegills and other panfish love!

There is no Death; There is the Force

“The times I feel clear are fewer and further in between,” he said to a pane of grey. The rain knocked sharply on the full-length glass and the metal. It sounded a little like living in a tin can with thick insulation. The Mandolorian Enclave had been last week. Elutherius ran the memory through again over the fading whisper of the Force, but he found he couldn’t remember anything before Danara welcoming him home.

“Small price for ruling the world.” Was what she’d said next, but Elutherius couldn’t remember his response. Or even having existed past that point. It had something to do with him having been made Sith from the workings of a slave, no doubt. Or maybe it was having been made a slave from the workings of a Sith. To the Sith? He had been enslaved to the Sith, but that didn’t seem right.

What had she said again?

His head grew louder until the memory was eaten by both sides, and he felt himself expand into a sea of voices that connected the galaxy. He hummed to the tune they seemed to be pattering out and tried to cup his thoughts in his hands.

He was packing his kit. The military encouraged essentials, and he was sticking to the rough. He smoothed his red hands over the plain black fold of his field uniform and patted it into place. His shoulders twitched to a tune working itself into his head, brow working into a furrow.

And then he was handing himself a knife. The blade was curved and wicked.

Elutherius’ eyes darted around. The room was darkened, and he recognized it as the one he’d been sitting in though the time of day was much more advanced than he’d last remembered.

It was Kurt’s room. His eyes stumbled over holos that pulsed with such a faded glow, Elutherius knew the tomes to be old. They were placed on handsome shelves also cluttered with childhood trophies for every year he’d been alive. In front of them was the dresser. Its brutalist edges emphasized Imperial efficiency, but its collection of hair pomades and gels were luxurious items. Even the handful clustered around the mirror were exorbitant amounts for any one person to have. Soft waxed candles dipped by hand glowed softly in the dark. They illuminated curved instruments of stone and wood. Black glass amulets draped around a carved idol caught the light of the alter.

The romantic glow over cruel instruments recalled Kurt’s wince of pain when Elutherius had reentered the room not long ago. His grimace caught the light on his canines in the mirror. Elutherius slipped in and listened to the jingle of a belt buckle as Kurt pulled the knife away from his lower stomach. It was too dark to see the blood, but the stone-tainted copper smell was obvious even in trace amounts.

Kurt’s eyes found Elutherius’ in the mirror and the Pureblood jumped. The blade flicked down his other arm. His skin rasped as it split against the edge, and Kurt cursed softly.

“Oh, it’s just you,” he’d said with a wary frown as Elutherius sidled up beside him. Elutherius fought to stay in the present, to not let the tired concern in that frown take him to every single place he’d seen it on Kurt’s face since… he’d become… this.

The Pureblood pressed a white cloth dipped in the sharp clear smell of disinfectant against the nick until the darkening stain on the cloth spread no further. The Force babbled a touch shy of frenzied at her alter.

“I was offering sacrifice to the Force for strength in my field mission.” He held out the knife. “You’re welcome to as well.”

Elutherius grasped the cool curved stone handle, his fingers resting over Kurt’s hand. He was warm, but Elutherius could barely feel that now.

Elutherius didn’t clean the blade; he and Kurt had already shared blood a long time ago. He met his own eyes in the mirror and ignored the shadows that haunted the edges of his vision. That was the price of an unnatural power.

He drew the blade down the center of the fake mouth he’d cut on either side of his lips and opened it into an uneasy red grin.

He glanced at Kurt. Kurt glanced away.

“Major Wax,” he rasped. His own voice sounded thick.

“Elly.”

“Do you really think the Force will protect anyone?”

“That’s not my decision to make, I only honor it for the strength it’s given me in the past, and I hope the favor is returned.”

Elutherius looked at Kurt. Kurt looked back at him. Force, he was alien and handsome all at once; Elutherius didn’t feel like he’d seen Kurt, really seen him in years. Not that Elutherius could remember. He didn’t look pleased. His eyes flicked over Elutherius.

“Elutherius.”

The hooded figure turned around, his yellow eyes falling on the Mirialan behind him. He was the last one remaining. The rest of the group he’d separated from Major Wax’s company had been sent west to scout and hunt out Republic stragglers, but there were no stragglers that way. Elutherius had felt out Kurt’s little map and the pinpoints when he’d asked to talk to the Pureblood last night. He couldn’t remembered what they’d talked about, but he remembered how earnest Kurt had looked. He had wanted to believe the lie that his Elly was making amends with him, so he did.

The Republic was moving troops from the west - where underbrush lessened the closer the bog drew to the Endar Spire. The young Sith wouldn’t be able to hide among foliage, like they did on Kaas. The young Sith would be slim pickings for an army.

Elutherius was the oldest, the most graduated from Korriban, and his master had little left to show him excepting careful mastery of Juyo and all the forms that composed it. He was Sith in a tangible sense. They trusted that.

“Elutherius,” panted the Mirialan. Friyr couldn’t remember his name. “I’ve been keeping an eye out, like you said, so we can move before we get bore down on, but we’re clear on the eastern front. I can’t--.” He placed his hand on his knees and panted. “Are you sure your information’s right?”

Elutherius’ vision blotted with shadows that flickered as though they belonged under candlelight and not in the sun-filtered shade of the Tulerian canopy. Gold speckled over the Mirialan’s green skin and kissed it a dusty emerald. Pretty.

“Elutherius?”

The Sith’s eyes canted up from the patch on the younger man’s neck, and he brought his arm up instead. First, he unhooded himself revealing long blond hair and a face that had seen better days. Second, he wrapped his fingers around the newly minted apprentice’s throat before he could comprehend the motion. Elutherius could feel his gurgles against his fingertips, even through the Force.

Elutherius jerked his arm and shoved the man against a tree. Even after he cracked his head against it, the alien kicked so hard the heels of his boots tore bark off in strips. Elutherius could guess why an alien had been made Sith; The same reason he had. Alien holdings of significance were rare in the Empire after all.

Elutherius could hear the sounds of blaster fire growing closer in the silent marsh. He didn’t look the man in the eyes as he approached, unclipped his hungry lightsaber, and railed it through his chest with one hand. The man fell limp and spasmed around the red blade even after his heart stopped beating.

Elutherius still remembered the face. Mirialans turned a strange blue-greenish gray when they ran out of air. Each color was distinct and yet one. He’d looked at it when he’d seated himself next to the corpse. His robes were disarrayed around him, when the Republic arrived. Their company was small, but Elutherius could hear the sounds of a larger battle in the distance between the bulk of the main two armies. Kurt.

It drowned out the voices of troopers yelling at him in a blur of blue and white that had nothing to do with his blindness, but a sense of loneliness and fear on this strange world. He raised both hands in surrender.

Friyr had killed too many people to keep track of. Most he didn’t remember, very few did he wish to remember, but the young mirialan’s face had come back to him that early morning as he dipped his arm in the lake and scrubbed the gashes clean of blood and rock until his skin was tender and the water foul smelling.

He had been pretty; a very pretty thing in an unpretty world, and Friyr had killed him anyway. Friyr wondered if what he was doing with Sahley, was anxiety, boredom, or pent up guilt over some repressed memory he hadn’t regained until that afternoon.

He…didn’t want to think about that.

“On Kaas we didn’t bury our dead.”

Friyr hadn’t buried the mirialan either; he’d just sat with him. Like a mad akk, things mattered little to Friyr once they’d stopped moving in his teeth.

“What’re you doing with that dead Felucian, Friyr?”

“Taking er—the him her back to his her people. I don’t know if they bury their dead, but they should have the bodies back.”

Friyr still didn’t feel a sense of guilt knowing he’d killed them. They had attacked first, and he would be damned if he was going to let that slide. Bringing them back didn’t bring him solace.

Death was death.

It was neither sad

Nor frightening.

It was. And for the person who’d died, it wasn’t.

“Funerals are for the living.”

Bringing the bodies back was penance for Friyr. A debt repaid or a lesson learned for the singular Mirialan. It neither righted any wrong nor absolved Friyr of the vicious pleasure he had sending the humans and Purebloods to death. But…the alien.

Being a Jedi, besides giving him his mind back was about unnotching the wounds he’d inflicted on the universe. One couldn’t restore something once marred, but they could do things differently.

He turned and slogged back into the shore, listening to the disturbance of the water in his wake.
