I know unfurling was last week's word (I don't even have one this week) but I had to show you this Calathea lancifolia (now Goeppertia). Look how gorgeous this rolled up leaf🌿 is. Some of these pictures are taken with the #easymacro lens. The burgundy underside is showing its beauty and when it unfurls the top is green with dark green markings 💚 and is also called the rattlesnake 🐍 plant. Make sure to give it high humidity, don't let it dry out, and use distilled water when watering. Calatheas are in the marantaceae family along with the prayer 🙏 plant, and they do not like the chemicals in our water, 💧 (usually only municipal water) especially fluoride which does not dissipate by letting your water sit overnight like the chlorine does. The chemicals and/or inconsistent watering will cause brown tips, edges, and spots on the foliage. This is a beautiful family of foliage plants which do flower 🌸 but may not in your home. They prefer a medium light- no high light, please. Ahhhh HELP I was gone for 2 days and came back home to this?!?! It wasn’t like this when I left. Wtf is happening here? Is that mold? Orrrr? Is this plant a goner? Can I revive it? Should I take it out of this lil garden so none of the other plants in it get contaminated???

I thought this begonia was dead 😬, but I kept watering 💧 it when it dried out just in case. (If I had not let it completely dry out in the first place, we wouldn't be talking about this.) I am optimistic most of the time and it payed off! Here comes a new leaf 🌱. Sometimes you just have to have hope. Plants want to live and grow and are more resilient than you think. Love this Pellonia pulchra climbing up a bromeliad leaf, growing @belleislestatepark in the conservatory. It is planted with another creeping plant (the ground covers of the tropics) Pilea libanensis (glauca). They look good together don't you think? These plants would work well as under plantings in your large potted trees. Love these Euphorbia milii flowers/bracts! 💛 I purchased this tiny crown of thorns and down potted it the other day. What is down potting❓Sometimes when you purchase a plant it is over potted, which means the root system isn't large enough to warrant the size pot it is in. So I down ⬇️ pot those plants or move them to a smaller sized containers, more in proportion to their root size. Too much wet potting medium around the roots of plants can rot them and without roots, obviously say goodbye 👋 to your plant. While watering plants I caught this innocent picture of Henry the jungle kitty 🐈 looking out the window. Swipe to see the only halfway decent picture I got after he turned around and started batting at me through the plant. He is crazy!! This is the parallel plant or Peperomia puteolata and is the actual plant from page 121 of my book Grow in the Dark 🌌. It is doing well and is loving this east 🧭 window exposure. It is an easy plant and if you are a person who forgets to water your plants this may work for you. Though it doesn't want to dry out completely, it is a bit forgiving as it has thick leaves that store water. 🌿*Remember plants with thinner leaves do not store water so they need water 💧 more often and extra humidity. In my house that means I need to keep those plants in my sight 👀 at all times so I don't forget and let them dry out. Are you looking for things to do during this quarantine? 🤔 Is your dog 🐕 tired of taking umpteen walks a day? Kitty 🐈 hiding under the bed? Why not give your pets a break and pamper your plants instead? I took this 'Kiwi' Dracaena marginata out of its pot and saw this. A lot of roots circling the pot. It is time to up-pot. What is the difference between up-potting and repotting? If I were to just take this plant out if its unattractive grow pot and put it in the same size decorative pot, it would be re-potting. But this plant needs a bigger home, so I'm up-potting it to the next size pot. Don't pick a pot that is too large or the roots may rot in too much wet potting medium. It also had some brown ends because I had neglected this plant and also its known for doing that. (Another story.) So I trimmed the ends in a way that looks more like the plant tip, not cutting it straight across. The plant looks better and is ready to grow into it's new pot. What are you doing this weekend? I haven't posted my monstera 💚 in a long time. It is in the sunroom and is getting huge. I may have to move it into the house to slow it down.
