~ SWTD: Still Here AU Part 15: ~
You're Home:
Who's ready to meet the Muirs? This is the longest arc. I'm calling it 'Farming and Family.' If this was ever a book, yes, someone said I should publish it like Portal's Blue Sky, then these chapters would be the first novel. Also, yes, I did write this alongside all of the Operation Spy mini-arc. Next chapter might not be out till next week because of this.
Part 16:
Fiona Muir wasn't alarmed when she heard the roaring of trucks from the kitchen window. Sometimes deliveries can be made in the evening. Farming wasn't exactly a job where you could stick to a time schedule. But, when the headlights began to meet her eyes, she frowned. Her mind began to race. Were they expecting a delivery? Did Angus not tell her? Perhaps they were lost?
Then she saw the logo on the side. Cadal. Her heart sank, and her mind began to race further. She turned the tap off. She didn't notice everyone else in the house had the same reaction and began to hover. Fiona didn't wait or listen. Something in her gut told her this wasn't good. She marched to the front door, swung her oversized brown cardigan on, slipped into her muddy wellington boots, and opened the door.
'Fiona, where are you going?' her husband Logan called. She ignored him.
'Ma, wait,' her eldest Angus called. She ignored him.
'Ma,' her youngest Harris called. She ignored him.
Fiona might be a woman in her early sixties, but she still had the mental and physical energy of someone in her forties. Farming will either make you or break you. For the Muir's, it was never the latter.
Her boots crunched under the freshly layered snow. The passenger door opened, and O'Connor, Roy, and Caz jumped out. The driver kept the engine running, both for heat and to prevent it icing over. Roy, feeling like he hadn't done anything to contribute other than hide and do stock intake, took it upon himself to explain the very normalised situation. At least to everyone else on the property. They're all prepared for the reaction and it's outcomes. Caz and O'Connor went to open the van door. Roy felt like he was delivering news of Muir's death.
'Are you Fiona Muir?'
'Yes.' She took a laboured breath. 'Is this about Ewan?'
Roy nodded. Fiona's face dropped. He was quick to react. 'He's fine - don't worry - but he's - well, he's different.'
'Was it an accident?'
'Yes.' Fiona covered her mouth in shock. Her mind instantly came up with wild theories. How can Ewan even be okay if there was an accident? 'I'm sorry, but it's best you see for yourself.' The rest of the family, apart from Muir's nephew who was alseep in his crib, appeared on the doorstep. Roy noticed and made eye contact with them. 'You all can, but I must warn you, this will be a bit of a shock.'
'Well, where is-'
'I'm here, ma.' Muir's voice was weak. Shy. The usual playfulness was full of dread. It wasn't until they got into the drive that the excitement of going home became one of nerves. He was shaking, and not because of the cold. Not even Innes' touch could help. He had to let go, retreating the tendril Innes now knew every crease and line of. 'Just...Just don't scream, eh?'
The truck swung side to side, and everyone waited with baited breath. Muir's family approached, believing Ewan was going to be wheeled out on a hospital bed with 3rd degree burns or a broken bone. Why he didn't come home in an ambulance was something that didn't cross their minds. Then they saw him. His mum, dad, two brothers, their wives, and his two nieces saw what Muir had become. He towered over them, yet he felt so small. Like a toddler who's been caught drawing over the freshly painted living room walls. He couldn't look them in the eye. He felt their hearts sink and then race. What hurt was seeing Angus lightly push his nieces behind him. Muir hung his head low, as if this was all his fault.
'H-Hey, everyone. I...' What do you even say? 'I hope you had a good Christmas.' A light whimper escaped his mostly melted lips. 'I'm sorry I didn't rin-'
'Ewan?' Fiona stepped forward and gently cupped her sons face, slowly forcing him to look at her. She held back a gasp when she noticed all of his eyes moved to look at her. She began to study her middle child. From the bubbled flesh to the exposed ribs that kept his upper body from toppling over. Then she noticed his intestines hanging out. That got her to let out a deflated breath. 'I don't know where to look.' Muir's eyes filled with tears. Oddly enough, until now, he was content with his new body. He never felt ashamed, but hearing those words crushed him. He lowered his head again and silently cried. Fiona quickly knelt down to keep in his eyeline.
'Oh, baby, I'm sorry.' It was genuine. Quick to correct her mistake. 'Please forgive me. I just don't-' No. No excuses. She cried with him. 'We can fix this.'
'No, you can't,' he mumbled. 'I'm stuck like this forever.' Oh, how those words were a knife to her heart, but she was a Muir. And Muirs don't break.
'Then we'll be with you every step of the way.' With one hand, Fiona stroked Muir's arm and wiped his tears with the other. 'Please don't cry. You're home.'
Logan approached and patted Muir on the side of what should have been his shoulder. He knelt down beside his wife and pulled him into a hug. 'You're my son. How can I ever stop loving you?'
'You don't find me repulsive?'
'Well, you never were the handsome one,' Harris joked, causing his wife, Moira, to lightly smack him on the arm. Muir stifled a small laugh as his worries began to leave his mind. Why would he ever think his family would reject him? They hugged Muir as he cried. He wrapped a tendril around them all in return.
Caz turned to Roy, who was crying at the sight. 'Alright, Roy?'
'Y-Yeah.' He sniffed loudly, completely killing the moment. 'Just being silly.' But he wasn't alone. O'Connor and Raffs shed a few tears, and even the driver he sat besides was openly bawling. Whilst the family had their moment, Brodie opened the second truck for Gibbo and Addair. Innes led Rennick outside, and Trots used his tendrils to not land flat on his face in the inch thick snow and slush. Getting into the truck without legs was easier than getting out. Bonnie, Muir's eldest niece from his older brother Angus, noticed them and gasped loudly.
'Mummy. Daddy!' She pulled on their sleeves, trying to pull them away as she slipped under Muir's tendril. Bonnie was the eldest, but that doesn't mean much when you're only seven. 'There's more! There's more!' She pointed at Addair, who awkwardly froze and glanced between her and her parents before giving a small wave. Now, the initial shock just became confusion.
Muir pulled away and turned for his family to see everyone. 'Ah, so, everyone.' He wiped his tears and put on a smile. 'These are me work mates.' Yes, even Rennick and Addair, who looked surprised. 'I was hoping they could stay here. Please?' He sounded like a teenager begging for his friend to sleep over on a school night, rather than a thirty-five year old man. 'They can't go back to the cities, and they can help. What about the old barn? We can all fit and-'
'Ewan.' Logan interpreted, noticing his son began to talk too fast. 'They can stay. I'm not gonna leave you lot out in the cold. But, yes, we'll need all the help we can get. After some names, though.'
'Thank you, dad.' Muir turned and gestured for the group to approach whilst he easily stepped over his family, with his back now facing the house. 'Everyone, this is me ma and pa. Fiona and Logan. Big brother Agnus. Little shit brother 'arris.'
'Ewan, stop swearing in front of-'
'Lily, wife of Angus and Moira.' Yes, Moira Muir. 'Wife of 'arris. Bonnie and-' Muir stopped and knelt down to reach his second nieces' eyes. 'I'm sorry, I always forget your name.' An obvious joke. The girl puffed out her chest and bellowed.
'I'm Amber Night. Queen on the Universe!' Grace. Her name is Grace. She's five. Roy held back a laugh. Rennick tried not to react to the ear-piercing screams from a little girl. He's just been sleeping for the past 3 hours. He didn't need that as an alarm.
'And my nephew upstairs is Oliver.'
'Quiet the family, then?' Caz joked. Being a single child, he's never known or understood what it's like to have so many relatives. Two daughters and a wife just felt right for him. 'Pleasure to meet you.' He shook Logan and then Fiona's hands. 'We'll try and,' he let out a single chuckle. 'Answer any questions you might have.'
'Oh! Oh!' Grace yelled as she jumped up and down to get everyone's attention as she held Moira and Bonnie's hand. 'Uncle Ewan. Why are you a crab?'
'Grace!' Moira snapped. 'Don't be rude.'
'No, it's fine, Moira.' Because Muir was quick to think of an explanation a child could understand. He grinned. 'You see. I've been cursed.' Cue the dramatics. 'Cursed by the sea for stirring its waters. But, you know what's worse?'
'What?'
'I must feed. And do you know what on?'
'What?'
Muir leaned in close. Three tendrils from each side of his body sprouted and slowly reached for them. 'Children.' Cue the girls running, and Muir giving chase across the 5 acres of snowy garden before reaching the fields, laughing like a sterotypical villain from a children's show. 'You can't escape me!' Well, they're happy to have their favourite uncle back.
Caz's eyes matched Angus, and he noticed that star-struck look in his eye. Yep. Another fan. 'Wait. You're Caz McLeary.' Rennick, who was rolling his eyes to the moon and back, was right. He really was the height of shite on shore. He didn't give Caz time to answer. 'Okay. Wow. I wondered what happened to you after you retired.'
'Eh. It just felt right. Met me wife, and I could feel me body telling me to stop.' Suze. 'Oh, do you have a phone we can borrow?'
'Of course.' He turned to Logan. 'Dad.' He turned to Angus. 'I'll take who I can inside. You set Ewan and his friends up with the barn.'
The barn sat just after the cattle guard that joined the field to the garden. Logan led the infected and Innes, who should be there for Muir, but he was still too busy playing pretend with his nieces. Currently, he hung Bonnie by her ankle above his head, pretending he was going to eat her alive. Grace tapped his leg with a makeshift stick she used as a sword to save her cousin. He lightly dropped Bonnie into the snow and acted as if they had found his weak spot. Now, he was the one being chased, begging for mercy.
'So, let me get this straight.' Logan opened the barn doors, where they were greeted to stacks of hay and several barn cats. Rennick's eyes widened because that man adored cats, but he didn't want anyone to know. He lingered at the back, but he could see a couple of calico kittens as clear as day. Whatever conversation was happening around completely went in one non-existent ear and out the other. 'You drilled into something living in the oil?'
'That's the gist of it,' Addair replied. 'We came into contact with it, so we look like this now.'
'But, it suddenly died,' Trots continued.
Logan raised a brow. 'Just like that?'
'Just like that. It came from the sea, so maybe it couldn't breathe?' Trots didn't know, and he didn't care. 'It turned to dust before we could ask it anything.'
'Well, I'm sorry for what you blokes have gone through. Now,' Logan banged the door and went inside. 'We'll bring blankets. Give ye a tour if you want. Watch out for the barn cats. They hide in here most days.' Not that Rennick minded. 'It's early for bed, so please, come and sit with us. Got a lot to talk about.'
'You're too kind, Logan,' Gibbo's warm smile dropped when he heard Muir drop into the snow besides him. By now, everyone else had gone inside. He turned and saw his co-worker reaching out with a look of pain. Bonnie and Grace had somehow managed to get onto his back, where they began to tickle him. He wasn't ticklish but anything for his nieces' playtime.
'Gib...bo...Avenge me...'
Gibbo raised a brow, smiled, and turned away. 'Keep up the good work, girls.' And with that, he walked inside, leaving him to his fate.
Gently, Muir hoisted his nieces up, rolled onto his back, and set the girls down on his chest. They hugged what they could of him. Muir smiled and looked up at the clear night sky. The waning crescent moon shone brightly, and Muir's mind was at peace with himself. Despite everything that's happened to him, from the pain of transforming and losing himself to The Shape, to finally being one with Innes, he felt better than he had in months. Of course, he didn't know what was coming next, but he was ready because Ewan Derek Muir was finally home.

Class of 1974 Taking Chances Part 3: All In
Javier Peña X F!Reader
RATED: EXPLICIT 18+
WORD COUNT: 1800ish
WARNINGS: oral sex (f receiving) some swearing, As always, see something? Say something. Pop into my DMs and let me know so I can add anything I overlooked.
SERIES SUMMARY: Javier graduated from high school in 74', it's 1989. On a sort of whim he decides to go to his class reunion and sees his old flame, you.
CHAPTER SUMMARY: Javi arrives in Vermont and is ready to take the plunge.
Part 2
Javier turns onto a dirt road, passing three large mailboxes, the faded red one has your last name and a little handprint in sky blue on it. A rippling hayfield and what has to be an ancient beech tree complete with a tire swing are to his left and an old stone wall with raspberry canes growing through it on his right. Javier can’t help but think he's entered a Norman Rockwell painting, and wonders if he's up for that, if he can fit into that. A DEA agent, who bent the rules into pretzels "to get the bad guy".
He has to take this chance; he knows he will regret it if he gets cold feet. Like last time with you and then with Loreena.
Driving past the tree, the road bends to the left and a farmhouse with an attached barn, common in New England, comes into view. A kid in overalls is in the dooryard with a black dog. He turns and calls into the house.
Then there you are, t-shirt, jeans, and tall Wellington boots, a pair of work gloves in your hand, and all trepidation washes away. Javier gets fully out of his fastback and swings the door closed. His hands settled on his belt. He looks down at his shoes and then tilts his head up a tick, his eyes raised to meet yours, eyebrows up in question.
Is this okay?
"Javi?" You ask, astonished, a smile nevertheless spreading across your face. Then you break into a run, gloves forgotten in the grass as you all but crash into him. His arms immediately wrap tightly around you; your feet leave the ground for a moment.
"You're here," you confirm, "you're h- I - wait, is everything okay?"
Your last conversations have been hard ones, Vermont and Texas are just so far, it feels more than just distance when it's not temporary. You feel it’s unfair to ask him to come to Vermont, to give up on his work and be so far from his father, and Javier knows you have a whole life here, making a living as a farmer, no easy feat these days, not to mention with a kid to raise.
"I thought we agreed long distance wasn't cutting it."
"It wasn't," Javier cups your cheek, his eyes roving your features with adoration.
"But I thought we- we decided... what's changed?"
"Me," Javier looks you full in the face, his chestnut eyes trained softly on yours. "I've changed, and I want you, wherever you are."
The corners of your eyes prickle, and you shake your head slowly in awe. Taking his face in your hands, his beautiful face, and slot your lips to his. You're glad he's got a good hold on you because your legs may never work properly again. When you finally come up for air, Javier takes his aviators off and looks at you, his eyes glassy too.
“Come on inside, let's have some lunch,” you take one of his fingers and give it a gentle tug as you lead him in the house. You give him a lopsided smile over your shoulder, and he huffs a laugh, again and again he wonders how he ever let go of you.
On the porch, you give your son, Benjamin a nod to come into the house he and Murphy the Dog, comply together.
Javier first smells the savory soup that must be on the stove. There's music playing from a radio. He takes in the house, from the outside it’s a picture of Americana, inside it's far more eclectic. The plaster walls above the wood wainscoting are painted in colors, rooms of sky blue, barn red, sage green… the floors are hodgepodge some are stained a warm honey color, while others have been painted, old folk art hook area rugs warming them up. Your love of theater, music, movies, and books is evident, from the marquee posters, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and instruments, not just an upright piano that looks like it came from a school but a guitar, ukelele, some instruments he doesnt recognize, and some kind of brightly colored hand drum beside a basket of equally colorful small percussion instruments. Then Javier remembers you saying in the winter you run a sort of music playgroup for little kids to help pay the bills.
Your kitchen is sunny yellow, large with a high tin ceiling with fans hanging down. It feels like the center of the house, it’s heart. Not only a large round scrubbed wood table with plentiful mismatched chairs, but an overstuffed armchair by a pillow covered window seat that looks like an adult could sleep on. The music is coming from a radio/turntable console that has to be from the 40’s or 50’s.
It's all exactly you, and he can’t believe this is the first time he is seeing it. Part of the reason things weren’t working probably; the plan was to save on travel by “meeting in the middle” when you could get together. Then the rest was letters and phone calls, but that at 38¢ a minute... they were not long. He needed to see your life, and you needed to see his. But he didn’t want to show you that. Sure, he gave you the broad strokes, not really wanting to get into details. Another reason… what’s that, strike two? He can't mess up the next pitch.
“You look like you see a ball and chain in the corner,” you murmur, trying to disguise anxiety with sass.
“Nope, just realizing I should have come here months ago, babydoll.”
You smile, relief in your eyes.
“This is Benji,” you say pulling your son to a side hug. Murphy starts smelling Javier, closely. “And 'nosy Joe' here is Murphy.”
“Hi Benji. Your mom’s told me a lot about you, I’m Javi.” Javier pulls back his hips protectively and gives the Labrador a hand to smell. Chuckling, he murmers, “Murphy, huh?”
“Ben,” you say, with a nod at Murphy.
“Yeah sorry, come on Murph get out of there,” your son pulls Murphy away, “Sorry.”
After grilled cheese with soup and chatting with Benji about school (it’s okay) and baseball (I can’t believe we came in third! My favorite is Boggs), Benji asks if Javi brought his gun. (Earning a stern Benjamin Oliver! from you and a wink and a nod from Javi), and you encourage Benji to show Javier the farm while you clean up.
"Sure!" The boy bounds through the house, "come on!"
Javier kisses your forehead and follows.
"You work on a ranch?"
"Mmhm, it's my father's, it's big"
"Ours is small, just a few goats, sheep, chickens... we have two horses. Mom told me you have a cattle farm"
"Yep, cows and horses to wrangle them."
"Knock, knock."
Javier is quite for a beat from the abrupt switch, then smiles-
"Who's there?"
"Impatient cow."
"Impatient cow wh-"
"MOOOOO" Benji cuts across, and Javier gives him a satisfying burst of surprised laughter. He ruffles the boy's head-
"That's a good one, Ben. I needed a good knock knock joke."
Javi brings his overnight bag upstairs. Your room is a soft coral. The bed is tall, with a whitewash spindle headboard and a crazy quilt spread, complete with a calico cat at the end of it, who looks at Javi nonplussed.
“There is a bathroom off of my room, right through the closet- yeah, old houses,” you shrug.
After putting his bag on the cedar chest at the end of the bed, Javi reels you in for a kiss.
“So did I hear Benji go outside?”
You laugh, kissing him.
“Yeah, he went over to the neighbors, I told him we needed to talk about some stuff.”
“Talking’s good. But mmm, I can think of other ways to-“
Javi's hand cradles the back of your neck as he comes in for another deeper kiss. You hum a little at the taste of his lips and his mustache's rasp. You bring your pelvis in to meet his, which is taken as a green light. With the smooth grace of someone practiced, Javi brings your shirt over your head with hardly a break in his feast on your mouth, jaw, and neck. You unbutton his shirt hastily, and not as smoothly – it's been a while, and you aren't nearly as skilled. But you are gifted a soft groaning, ‘fuck’ when you dip your head to his now bare chest, and let your teeth graze one of his nipples. Javier backs you toward the bed. When you're spread out, legs dangling off the edge, he unbuttons your jeans, peeling them off you like a present he is looking to savor, as you watch on your elbows. Your bra and underpants remain. You sit up and pull at his buckle. Javier watches you, your eyes sparkling with mischief as you work his buckle open and off, then unbuttoning his jeans. He remembers his shoes and toes them off quickly, not wanting to lose momentum. Looking at you mostly bare, soft curves, silver stretch marks from carrying Benji, just gorgeous. His head shakes almost imperceptibly, thinking about the first time you “met part way” when you weren’t in a dark cramped car, when he could see you properly for the first time in fifteen years-
“Bonita, babydoll, you’re so beautiful… the years I missed-“
“We’ve got plenty of time, Javi, plenty.”
“I wish-“
“Me too. But we are here now.”
“We’re here now.”
You tug his pants down and pull him onto you, bringing him back to the present.
Javier tucks his narrow hips between your thighs, his elbows holding his torso over you, he searches your face-
“I never stopped loving you.”
“Me neither,” your hand goes into his hair, giving a soft tug at the curls on the nape of his neck, Javier gives a growl and kisses you hard on the lips, its teeth and tongue, nips and licks. When you give an involuntary buck, his smirk is dangerous. He licks his bottom lip and his eyes track down your body, his eyebrows quirk like he’s deciding something. Suddenly he’s off you.
“Jav, what are y-" your confused query becomes a gasp.
Javier puts his mouth on your clothed mound.
“Shit,” you breathe.
Javier’s nose nudges at your clit, making your legs quiver, then he takes the elastic of your undies in his teeth and he draws them down slowly, his fingers looping the sides to help them along.
Your chest rises and falls quickly with anticipation, as you look at the ceiling. His breath fanning over your center tells you right where he is, and then the flat of his tongue draws a stripe from your entrance to your clit.
“Nectar of the gods, babydoll,” Javier moans and makes a meal of you.
Your head is heavy on his chest as you doze, which is no longer tight, and your quiet snores are like music, a comforting song. The afternoon sunshine streams in the open window. He watches the curtains flutter and dust motes dance in the disturbed air, as he hears birds, he doesn’t know. He is in uncharted territory and he has no plans to fuck it up. You are his compass, and years of what not to do is his map.
Before falling to sleep, he showed you his skeletons, you know what he’s done.
You will talk more. About about him, and his work. About what life might look like up here for him, like a warning. You'll stumble over the term 'stepdad', not wanting to presume… but you need to know for Benji, if he really wants this. And he does want it-
All of it.

Blue Castle Book Club 2.0 - Chapter 1
I told myself I'd start the WIP Big Bang in June, and it is now June. So it's time to get Tamora Pierce's voice out of my head and bring Maud's back. And what better way to do that than to book club my way through the book a second time and bring you all with me?
Dunno if we'll go chapter by chapter this time, since a lot of the middle chapters are short and more interesting to talk about as a group than individually. But we'll play it by ear and see what the vibes are like.
So! Back to Deerwood we go!
We start out strong, with a delightful opening paragraph:
If it had not rained on a certain May morning Valancy Stirling’s whole life would have been entirely different. She would have gone, with the rest of her clan, to Aunt Wellington’s engagement picnic and Dr. Trent would have gone to Montreal. But it did rain and you shall hear what happened to her because of it.
Everyone quite rightly talks about the first sentence, but I like the second one even more, and the way it subtly misleads us by highlighting Dr. Trent. It makes it seem like he will be a primary character (perhaps even a love interest!) when in actuality he ends up being just a catalyst. A fun hint at the humor of this book.
We move into Valancy's room, and we are painted a picture of a place that is both ugly and static. Maud, of course, loves to draw connections between people and the places they inhabit, and what we are learning about Valancy through her room is bleak. Yes, it is ugly and yes none of it is hers, but even more than that everything is old and crumbling: the wallpaper is faded, the ceiling is cracked and discolored, the looking glass is cracked, the shell-covered box has a bust corner and the beaded pincushion has half its bead fringe gone. And yet none of these items are permitted the dignity of retirement. They are on display just as they always have been, and will be until they fully crumble to dust. They have not been cared for, so that they might age gracefully or be preserved longer, they have simply sat, unloved and untended, falling apart but forbidden from leaving even though no one wants them there.
A strong start to the embodied houses in this book.
We get a delightful turn of phrase with:
Nobody in the Stirling clan, or its ramifications
The Stirling clan is an Event, an Act of Nature more than simply a family. They Happen to you and you just have to deal with the fallout.
Our second embodied house is the Blue Castle itself, and it is beautiful and splendid and solidly fantastical. The Blue Castle is like that perfect novel you dream to yourself while going to bed, filled with sparkling dialog and emotional climaxes that hit with perfect devastation and none of the actual work needed to make those elements work in practice. The Blue Castle has no need for laundry or dusting or clothing made from actual fabrics. Its inhabitants are free to float gracefully down the staircase on an endless loop and parade before Valancy swooning gracefully at her beauty. It’s a daydream, written by someone who clearly knows her way around a good daydream and understands them from the inside. As the author states herself:
Things are very convenient in this respect in Blue Castles.
But today Valancy is twenty-nine and miserable and unmarried and daydreams can sustain her no longer. And, unless I’ve forgotten something, she never again finds the keys to her Blue Castle in the story. She talks about it, but I don’t believe she ever actually sets foot in the fantasy again. By the time she’s able to dream again, she’s escaped her Stirling life and doesn’t need airy fantasies to keep her going.
Valancy thinks of the canceled picnic and goes through the list of relatives she’s glad to not have to see, which is all of them. Put a pin in these descriptions, we’ll come back to them in a later chapter. This first round of descriptors makes them all seem rather formidable and dreadful, but Valancy duly does her best to think well of them even in the privacy of her own thoughts. She is in awe of Aunt Wellington, Aunt Alberta has an amiable habit, she dislikes but respects Uncle James. As I said, we’ll come back to these.
Meanwhile, we don’t have to go to the picnic! And so Valancy tentatively plans her day, including her great rebellion of perhaps going unattended to a doctor at the tender age of 29. As I said the first time I read this book, I can so deeply relate to Valancy’s desire to do things secretly because trying to tell anyone what she’s doing will turn it into a Whole Thing.
Colors mentioned:
Greying darkness
Red eyes
Yellow-painted floor
Dark-red paper
Brown-paper lambrequin
Yellow chair
Red brick box
Blue Castle
Blue loveliness
White urns
Golden curls
Heavenly blue eyes
Reddish, tawny hair
Not one single crimson or purple spot
Silver teaspoon
We're limiting ourselves to the css colors, so perhaps Valancy's life is slightly more vibrant than the screen gives it credit for being, but even still this is a limited color palette, especially compared to what we will see later. The only interesting color words are crimson, which is referring to something valancy lacks, and golden and tawny which are referring to someone fictional. Otherwise it's all just the standard names for colors with no nuance.
#blue castle book club#moonlight and mistawis#tracking colors for my own purposes but also out of genuine curiosity

Was wondering why this mansion is only $799K, but then I saw that it’s a fixer-upper. It was built in 1938 in Battle Creek, Michigan has 9bds. & 13ba. This could be fabulous.
Isn’t this a grand staircase? If you want to change to the orange faux finish, which permeates a lot of the house, you’re going to have to get lots of paint.
The problem is that some is flaking off. The floors look in good condition.
Someone was into murals, which isn’t a bad thing, but the paint didn’t fare well and they even did the floor. The ceiling needs repair, too.
That looks like it may be a some sort of a display case. Why is the paint flaking off like that?
This room is in good shape.
This looks like a ballroom.
The kitchen’s vintage and in good condition.
I guess this is the scullery. What a great drainboard sink.
Nice pantry, too.
Small back porch.
The back service stairs.
Here’s another sitting room The walls and floor are in rough shape.
The 2nd fl. hall leading to the bedrooms.
There’s a sink in this bd. and a painted floor.
Look at this old closet/dressing room.
One of the baths looks like the tile is original.
The bds. are nice and bright.
This is an interesting room.
These two room are nice.
This part of the house looks like it was redone. Look at how beautiful it turned out.
This house just keeps on going. It’s got so much potential.
You can lost in here. This looks like a dormitory.
The hall down in the basement look like an office hall.
This is interesting. Looks like an old freezer down in the basement.
There’s a bar down here. Look at the old fridge in the wall.
Huge rec room for entertaining.
Look at the courtyard. This home can be stunning.
And, it’s right on the banks of the lake.
If you had a couple mil. to fix it up, it would be some magnificent mansion.
Even a large 4 car garage.
Look at the size of this place.

Joe L’Estrange was born in 1960 in Ōamaru, New Zealand, the birthplace of Janet Frame, but has lived in Dunedin since 1973. She graduated with a Diploma of Fine Arts from Dunedin School of Art in 1980. Her grandparents owned a house in Concord, and she has often painted her local neighbourhoods of Concord, Caversham, and now Corstorphine, where she currently lives high up on a hill.
In 1992, on her thirty-second birthday, L’Estrange won the Adam Portraiture Award with the painting Georgiana, judged by artist Shona McFarlane. With the $10,000 prize money, she bought her first house, by the motorway in Caversham, a working-class Dunedin suburb. Back then, she described herself as a "purely-what-the-eye-sees person, and that’s terribly out of fashion". But realism is never out of fashion, just out of the way, like Caversham. Representational art is timeless.
As an artist, L’Estrange has been described both as an enigma and as Dunedin’s worst-kept best-kept secret. I’m told she hates symbols and is allergic to ‘isms’. Her professional CV includes only a few wayfaring stops outside Dunedin: Balclutha and Whakatāne, Auckland and Wellington. https://www.newsroom.co.nz/readingroom/dunedins-cat-lady
“There are numerous artists who have painted flowers and gardens, but not many who have articulated these with the level of hypnotic intensity, delicacy, spatial complexity and energy that is evidenced in L’Estrange’s paintings.
“Everything L’Estrange paints has a potency about it, even if it’s a tin can. This is intrinsic to the way she paints what she sees and why her art is not like anyone else’s.

18 June 2023
Boney Was A Warrior
Aspley House 18 June 2023
It is now 208 years since the Battle of Waterloo. It was here, on perhaps the most famous battlefield in history, that the forces of the Duke of Wellington’s Anglo-Allied Army and Field Marshal Gebhard von Blucher’s Prussian Army decisively defeated Napoleon, ending over two decades of near constant European War and establishing a political order that would persist mostly unbroken for thirty years. In 2015, there was great pomp and ceremony at the site to mark its bicentennial. I was there. (At the bicentennial, not the battle.) So was the then Prince of Wales, and for reasons I’ve never completely worked out, Nigel Farage.
I couldn’t make the trip to Mont St Jean (for the battle was fought a few miles away from Waterloo itself), but I was going into London today, and it seemed appropriate to drop in to Aspley House, the Duke’s London residence, to mark the occasion.
Aspley House - ‘No. 1, London’ - is as handsome a Georgian townhouse as ever there was, and with the exception of containing perhaps more paintings than it did in his time, is kept pretty much as Wellington knew it. It is absolutely worth a visit. Yet I must make one major criticism of how Aspley House is run, and that is that it has a blanket ban on interior photography. I simply cannot agree with this. No flash photography is completely understandable, but I can’t help but feel that prohibiting photography altogether is a step too far, and out of touch with the modern world of phone cameras and go-pros. I do understand the reason - copyright - I just think it’s a poor reason.
Of course, you can take photos of the exterior to your heart’s content, and as an English Heritage property, there’s often little events going on to attract interest. Today, being Waterloo Day, the front of the house was occupied by redcoats - the men of the 68th Foot, the Durham Light Infantry. Of all the regiments of the British Army (or at least those I don’t have a family connection to), I’ve always had a particularly soft spot for the DLI. The 6th, 7th and 9th Battalions, during WWII, were formed into one brigade for most of the war in Europe, and Montgomery regarded them quite highly. (The 6th and 7th were rotated home at the end of 1944 for a well-earned rest, but the 9th DLI was folded into the famed 7th Armoured Division and fought for the last few months of the war.) On top of this, they had green facings, and my favourite colour is green, so that works well.
The reenactors drilled before visitors at 1pm, giving their audience a good idea of how British soldiers drilled, what they wore and how they fought in the Napoleonic Wars - specifically in the Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns and the War of 1812 against America. It was a very good show, and I quite enjoyed it. Kudos to the 68th!
(In case one is wondering what other British regiments I have a ‘soft spot’ for, they would be those my family were part of - the descendents of the 60th and 95th Rifles, plus the Royal Engineers and the Royal Artillery - the 2nd (Coldstream) Foot Guards, the Royal Marines, the Middlesex, the Black Watch, the Ox and Bucks and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. I’ll stop myself there because I kept thinking of others.)
After Aspley House, we headed back down the Victoria and Northern Lines to Edgware, which will be my home base for tonight. Tomorrow will be a long day - the longest day, I’d say, except that refers to the wrong war - ambling around Central London looking at war memorials, the great monuments of the Imperial Metropolis, and a little provincial church they call Westminster…

What To Expect When House Builders Start Your Dream Home?
Building your dream home is a significant milestone that combines your aspirations, lifestyle, and design preferences into a single, cohesive structure. The process can be exciting and complex, so understanding what to expect when house builder Wellington experts begin your project can help ensure a smooth and successful experience. From the initial stages to the final touches, here’s what you can expect as the journey unfolds.
1. The Design and Planning Phase
Before any physical work begins, the planning phase sets the foundation for the entire project. During this stage, you’ll collaborate with architects, designers, and house builders to finalise your home's design, structure, and layout. During this phase, your vision begins to take shape, with careful attention to details such as floor plans, material selections, and custom features.
Key Highlights:
Finalisation of architectural designs and site plans.
Selection of materials, finishes, and fixtures.
Establishment of a detailed project timeline and cost estimates.
2. Site Preparation and Groundwork
Once the design is complete, the next step is site preparation. This involves clearing the land, ensuring the soil is stable, and establishing a foundation to support your home. Depending on the type of foundation—whether slab, crawl space, or basement—house builders Wellington experts will take necessary steps to ensure proper grading, drainage, and groundwork before moving forward.
Key Highlights:
Land clearing, excavation, and site grading.
Soil testing and preparation for foundation work.
Arrangements for utility connections, such as water, gas, and electricity.
3. Laying the Foundation
The foundation is one of the most critical components of any home. It serves as the base for the structure and must be built to withstand the weight of the house and the forces of nature. House builders Wellington professionals will ensure that the foundation is solid, whether it’s a concrete slab, crawl space, or a full basement. During this phase, precision and attention to detail are essential to guarantee that the foundation is level and stable.
Key Highlights:
Concrete pouring and foundation set up.
Installation of support structures and reinforcements.
Preparation of the foundation for framing and future installations.
4. Framing and Structural Development
With the foundation in place, the framing stage begins. This is when the skeleton of your home starts to take shape. The walls, roof trusses, and floors are constructed, and you can start to see the outline of your home come together.
During this phase, house builders will focus on ensuring the structural integrity of the building while working towards the completion of the primary building envelope.
Key Highlights:
Construction of the structural framework, including walls and roof.
Installation of windows, doors, and basic plumbing/electrical lines.
Preliminary inspections to ensure compliance with building codes.
5. Exterior and Interior Finishes
As the framing is completed, attention shifts to exterior and interior finishes. The home’s outer shell, such as roofing, siding, and exterior paint, is completed, giving the house its first real sense of character. Inside, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, and finishes are installed. This is the phase where the house starts to feel like a home, with features like plumbing fixtures, light installations, and flooring adding depth and functionality.
Key Highlights:
Application of exterior finishes, including siding, roofing, and painting.
Installation of interior finishes, such as drywall, floors, and cabinetry.
Electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems are fully installed and tested.
6. Final Inspection and Handover
Before the project is officially completed, house builders Wellington experts will conduct a thorough inspection to ensure that all aspects of the home meet safety and quality standards. The home is reviewed for any issues or areas that require adjustment, and necessary fixes are made. Once everything is verified, the final walkthrough is conducted, and your new home is ready for occupancy.
Key Highlights:
Comprehensive inspection by the builders and local authorities.
Walkthrough with the builder to check for any necessary adjustments.
Official handover and the completion of your new home.
Conclusion
Building a home is a detailed and organised journey, requiring careful planning and skilled execution. By understanding what to expect from house builders Wellington experts, you can stay informed and involved throughout the project, ensuring that your dream home is built to the highest standards.

The Best Techniques for Effective House Washing in Wellington
House washing wellington is a crucial part of home maintenance, especially in Wellington, where the weather can be quite variable. From rain and wind to salt from the sea, Wellington's climate can lead to grime and mildew on your house’s exterior. If you’re wondering how to keep your home looking fresh and clean, this guide will walk you through some of the best techniques for effective house washing in Wellington.
Why House Washing Matters
House washing isn’t just about making your home look good. Regular cleaning can extend the lifespan of your paint, prevent damage to your siding, and even improve your home’s overall energy efficiency. In Wellington, the mix of sea air and frequent rain can lead to algae, mold, and dirt build-up. Washing your house helps to:
Protect Your Investment: Regular washing helps maintain the value of your home by preventing damage from mold and mildew.
Improve Curb Appeal: A clean house looks inviting and well-maintained, which can be beneficial if you’re planning to sell.
Prevent Health Issues: Mold and mildew can cause health problems. Keeping your home clean helps reduce allergens and respiratory issues.
Preparing for House Washing
Before you start washing, preparation is key. Here’s what you need to do:
Check the Weather: Choose a day with mild weather. Avoid washing your house on windy days or when it’s too hot, as this can cause cleaning solutions to dry too quickly and leave streaks.
Gather Supplies: You’ll need a hose, a bucket, mild detergent, and possibly a pressure washer if you’re dealing with stubborn stains. Make sure you have the right cleaning solutions for the materials of your house’s exterior.
Protect Your Plants and Windows: Cover nearby plants with plastic sheeting to protect them from cleaning chemicals. Also, ensure that windows are closed tightly to prevent water from seeping in.
Techniques for House Washing
1. Soft Washing
Soft washing is a technique that uses low pressure and gentle cleaning solutions to clean the exterior of your home. It’s ideal for delicate surfaces like wood and stucco. Here’s how to do it:
Mix the Cleaning Solution: Combine a mild detergent with water in a bucket. For extra cleaning power, you can add a small amount of bleach to the solution, but be cautious not to use too much, as it can harm plants and discolor surfaces.
Apply the Solution: Use a sponge or a soft brush to apply the solution to the exterior walls. Start from the bottom and work your way up to avoid streaks.
Rinse Thoroughly: After letting the solution sit for a few minutes (but not too long), rinse it off with a hose. Make sure all the detergent is washed away to prevent residue build-up.
2. Pressure Washing
Pressure washing is a more aggressive method that uses high-pressure water to remove dirt and grime. It’s effective for tougher stains and surfaces like concrete and brick. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Set Up the Pressure Washer: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to set up your pressure washer. Make sure you’re using the right nozzle for the job—typically a 25-degree or 40-degree nozzle is best for house washing.
Test a Small Area: Before you start on the entire house, test the pressure washer on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn’t damage the surface.
Wash from Top to Bottom: Start at the top of the wall and work your way down. This method prevents dirty water from running over areas you’ve already cleaned.
Keep the Wand Moving: Don’t hold the wand in one place for too long to avoid damaging the surface or creating lines. Move it in a steady, sweeping motion.
3. Manual Cleaning
For smaller areas or specific spots, manual cleaning can be effective. This is a good option for areas where pressure washing might be too harsh or for cleaning detailed features.
Use a Bucket and Sponge: Fill a bucket with soapy water and use a sponge to scrub the area. For stubborn stains, you might need a stronger cleaner, but make sure it’s suitable for the surface you’re cleaning.
Rinse Well: After scrubbing, rinse the area thoroughly with clean water to remove all soap and dirt.
Tips for Effective House Washing
Be Mindful of Water Usage: Use water efficiently to avoid wastage. Consider using a spray nozzle with an adjustable setting to control the flow.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Opt for eco-friendly and non-toxic cleaning solutions whenever possible to protect your home and the environment.
Regular Maintenance: Instead of waiting for years between washes, clean your home annually or semi-annually to prevent build-up and maintain its appearance.
Inspect Your Home: While washing, take the opportunity to inspect your home for any signs of damage or areas needing repair.
Hiring a Professional vs. DIY
If you’re not comfortable with the idea of washing your house yourself or if your home is particularly large or delicate, hiring a professional might be a good option. Professionals have the experience and equipment needed to handle the job safely and effectively. Look for local services in Wellington with good reviews and reasonable prices.
Final Thoughts
House washing wellington is a simple yet important task that can keep your home looking great and functioning well. In Wellington’s unique climate, it’s especially crucial to stay on top of this maintenance to protect your property from the elements. Whether you choose to tackle the job yourself or hire a professional, regular cleaning will help ensure your home remains in top condition for years to come.
By following these techniques and tips, you’ll be well on your way to achieving a clean, well-maintained home that stands up to Wellington’s weather and continues to impress for years to come. Happy washing!

And speaking of happy homes, the Wellington Wells Housing Authority has announced a new initiative to help residents with home improvements. If you’ve been putting off that garden makeover or thinking about adding a fresh coat of paint to your living room, now’s the time to do it! The Housing Authority will be offering grants and low-interest loans to help cover the costs of these projects. So why not give your home a little extra love this summer?
