Uncle Jack Charles
“...there are many Aboriginal people who are gay, both men and women, and ... we’re so proud we’ve made our mark and stamped our ground. ... us gay and Indigenous mob, we’re fringe dwellers twice over, and that’s what gives us great strength.”
Bunurong and Wiradjuri man Uncle Jack Charles was taken from his mother at just four months old as part of the Australian government policy of forcibly assimilating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. These children are now known as the Stolen Generation.
Raised in a Salvation Army boys’ home, and then by a white foster family, Jack grew up believing he was an orphan, and had no idea he was Aboriginal until he was 17. When he left his foster home at 17 to seek out his birth family, his foster mother called the police. When Jack was finally able to connect with his family, he described himself as being born again in his Aboriginality.
Uncle Jack had his first acting role at 17, in a community production of African-American playwright Lorraine Hansberry’s Raisin in the Sun. He went on the become a stalwart of Indigenous theatre in Australia, and in 1971, co-founded the country’s first Indigenous theatre group, Nindethana, which achieved international acclaim.
Throughout his life, Uncle Jack dealt with homelessness and heroin addiction, and spent time in jail for theft. As a burglar, he deliberated targeted wealthy Melbourne neighbourhoods, saying later "I robbed as rent collection for stolen Aboriginal land!"
Having experienced the prison system himself, Uncle Jack became a tireless advocate for young incarcerated men, especially Indigenous men. In 2010, he starred in a one-man show called Jack Charlves v The Crown, where he explored his life, and his struggles with a government bureaucracy that said a man with a criminal record couldn’t be allowed to mentor prisoners.
Uncle Jack was openly gay, although romance was never a big part of his life. He described giving the Welcome to Country at Melbourne’s pride event, Midsumma, as one of his most cherished duties.
Uncle Jack passed away on 13 September 2022.
Keep an eye on this blog throughout the week as we continue highlighting queer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture for NAIDOC Week.

we've talked about how there are joy dispensers all over wellington wells and jack couldn't possibly have avoided all of them every time while he was still fitting in with proper society; he must have ridiculous control over himself to have successfully hidden the fact that he's seeing eyes everywhere.

I’ve been so busy with other stuff but I really want to get back to drawing WHF art so I went and cleaned up a wip. Not sure how I feel with some of the angles but I just needed to get this out of my system

I've never really had much interest in superhero movies - until the first Deadpool came along. And ever since then, that was the only (anti)hero I cared about and liked.
(Any other comics characters I liked were villains like Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and the Joker)
Now, after watching Deadpool and Wolverine twice, I can't believe how much I missed out on. I'm actually kinda embarrassed I've just realized how cool (and HOT) not only Logan/Wolverine is, but also how absolutely wholesome and adorable Hugh Jackman himself is in real life. He is SUCH a sweetheart and I wish I had known earlier because OH MAN did I miss out-

Watch Her .. I'm Needed Elsewhere
RD1 GM6
l Family is Everything au l Quinn x Mom l Masterlist l The Playoffs l
"Watch your niece for me." You place Trix on the couch near Jack, who was currently scowling at you.
The child had a goofy grin on her face, crawling over to her uncle, happy as a clam. She manuvers her way onto his lap and gives him a big hug. Hattie is a little wobbly so Jack steadies her with his good arm.
"You're at my house, not doing anything. So make yourself useful." You grab your backpack full of things for your one night stay at the hotel in Tennessee
"Technically I'm recovering, so I can't watch her." Jack smuggly replies. He tries to hand back your daughter, instinctively you take a step back out of his reach.
"No I think you'll be fine to watch her until your mom gets in later. It's only for one night."
"And where are you going exactly?"
"I am going to watch my husband beat Nashville in Nashville with the other girls." You smile very confidently while saying.
But internally you feel like you were in high school again asking your father for permission to visit your boyfriend in Ann Arbor overnight only this time it was your boyfriend's little brother aka your best friend and you were leaving your child for the first time with him to fly thousands of miles away.
"Luv Yack" Hattie squeezed her little arms around Jack's neck a little tighter.
That must have convinced him, because the next minute he's giving you another cheeky smile and you couldn't thank him enough for helping you out.
