"Ouverture du refuge catholique," La Presse. May 31, 1933. Page 3.

The Manila Hotel embraces Filipino traditions with glittering Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony
In a vibrant celebration embracing Filipino customs, The Manila Hotel kicked off the holiday season with its enchanting Tree Lighting Ceremony on November 9. The centerpiece of the evening was the resplendent Christmas Tree, adorned meticulously with golden Ilang-Ilang blooms, paying homage to the Grand Dame’s official flower. The blend of gold, natural tones, and vibrant reds created a visually…

It's extremely unsettling looking up historical resources on the New York House of Refuge because one source will be praising it as a model of philanthropy and juvenile reform and the next will pull back the curtain and detail how the Refuge enforced corporal punishment including but not limited to hanging children by their thumbs...

This house is crazy and I want it so bad! It comes with Manatees! The 1960 house in Crystal River, Florida has a spring that goes thru the property that's a Manatee rescue and refuge protected by the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. It's currently being operated as a bed & breakfast, but it doesn't have to be. 5bds, 5ba, and all the cool furnishings stay! $3.3M - it's pricey, but Manatees! Look at them all, right in the yard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bear in mind that all this great stuff conveys and look at the painted floor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Check it out, a blue fireplace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kitchen's cute and it's quite large.
Tumblr media
This is a main floor bedroom and look at the manatee mural. They even have manatee bedding.
Tumblr media
There's seaweed painted on this bathroom wall. The murals are professionally done.
Tumblr media
The rest of the bedrooms and baths are on the 2nd floor.
Tumblr media
The upstairs bedrooms are just as cool. This is so pretty and it has bedding to match.
Tumblr media
The en-suite.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The owners really went all out with the decor.
Tumblr media
Small pirate bedroom is adorable for a child.
Tumblr media
This is another residence on the property and could be a guest house or caretaker's house.
Tumblr media
It's currently used as storage.
Tumblr media
Has a nice bath- love the shell sink.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, there they are, the manatees swimming by in the heated spring- the water temp stays around 72 degrees year-round.
Tumblr media
Even the chimney on the fireplace has a mural and there's a roof top deck on the house.
Tumblr media
Seating around a fire pit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought that this was an outdoor fireplace, but I don't think it is.
Tumblr media
All of these boats convey so guests can take them out on the river.
Tumblr media
The property is .45 acre.
Tumblr media
I would say that there are so many homes around that they're probably private residences, rather than bed & breakfasts.

Egg Rock Light, Frenchman Bay, Winter Harbor, Maine. Until the lighthouse was built in 1875, Egg Rock was known for its massive amount of sea bird nests. Today ownership belongs to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and is managed as part of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge. If you're boating about the Bar Harbor area, be sure to be on the look out for the numerous harbor seals and black guillemots that are usually loitering around the lighthouse today.

A Prayer to Honor God with My Life
God, with everything I do, I want to honor You. You have given me my life and all that I have. You inspire me with ideas, words, and actions. Help me to humble myself and not take credit for what You’ve done in my life. Thank You for wanting me to play a part in Your plans.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

your eleventh fleet concepts are just *chef's kiss* as brilliant as they can be
Tumblr media
Thank you, littlekhada! Your art is also beautiful!
I will continue to develop the “Eleventh Fleet”. My drawings haven’t received such a response for a long time - it’s very motivating. Also noticed that your really liked Thrawn's design during his exile in Peridea. Well… I have an "attempt" to make concept art of a landscape of a distant planet. I wanted to make the Purgills' final refuge more… dead? ashen? atmospheric? Yes, that's probably exactly it.

Post rally, the newsies who were arrested and those who got away alike would have been restless with worry, wondering what might happen to themselves and to their friends...
In 1899, "juvenile delinquency" was still a relatively new concept. The 19th century saw the development of juvenile justice systems with the very first Juvenile Court in the United States being established that year in Illinois.
The New York House of Refuge, founded in 1824, was the first reform type institution that had been established for young offenders.
The New York state legislature in 1830 had given the governor the power to ". . . convey any convicts who shall be under the age of seventeen years, to the house of refuge in the [C]ity of New York." And in 1846 it was mandated that all boys who were under eighteen, and all girls under seventeen, who were convicted of any felony be sentenced to a house of refuge.
Post Civil War, child care agencies were funded and expanded to encompass "abandoned, neglected and delinquent children." An 1884 Act mandated that children under sixteen convicted of misdemeanors be sent to child care agencies rather than be imprisoned or sent to the refuge. A child under sixteen convicted of a felony would be ". . . placed in charge of any suitable person or institution willing to receive him."
By 1890, houses of refuge, reform schools, and religious and non-sectarian houses across the country delt with the majority of juvenile delinquents, as well as street children.
What does all this mean for the newsies? For the boys aged sixteen or older, they knew almost for a fact that they'd be going to the refuge. However, those who were younger might have been sent to any number of institutions.
When Judge Movealong announced his sentence - two weeks in the refuge for every boy arrested or the five dollar fine - the newsies, beneath their outrage, might have felt some relief. If Denton hadn't stepped in, they would have been imprisoned. But at least they would have all been together.
