so i dont usually do liveblogs because i never show up to streams and also im not very good at reacting to stuff. However. i will make an exception because HGCZ IS OUT!! and i have seen so much hype about it that id be a fool to not at least read it. livereact will be under the cut for spoilers and. stuff.

- ok we arent even on the actual ZINE and the opening dedication?? - interesting premise. im intrigued. though i am a little concerned about the "classist violence" and "body modification" warnings. I suspect this is not all Fun and Games

- "I gotta say, "Hot"Guy, this is pretty disappointing. You can be AverageGuy. MediocreGuy." "Oh! "Guy"!" the best part is this is so in-character for them to do

- the ENTIRE EXPLANATION bit omg. joel trying to interject and comic-style getting talked over, lizzie robbing cats instead of cash... and her backstory...

- i. that sudden style shift is not in fact comical and i am now eyeing the unreality warning at the beginning of the zine with sudden alarm. should i be alarmed by this? maybe this is fine. lets say its fine

- JELLIE! hcing her supername is HotCat. she DEFINITELY needs a matching HotGuy costume. and i am somewhat more reassured!

- wait hold on. went back to that first hotguy comic to see the warnings (hidden in the title, missed them) and. WAIT WAS THAT REWRITING FUCKIN MIND CONTROL

OK here it is, a ton of 'production' stuff for the Hot Guy Comic Zine! I've never been part of a project like this. Even though I was working on my comic mostly solo (shout-out to my editor Violet!), the world-building and story arc planning was completely collaborative. For example:

We started out on the world-building by voting on character's superpowers! Plenty of powers were almost unanimously agreed on, but Cuteguy was a HUGE campaign. We were pretty much 50/50 split between can fly/can't fly. Propaganda was exchanged LOL, like this piece where I campaigned for limited flying capabilities 😂 And thats what we ended up settling on!

From there we worked on a ton of brainstorming/world-building that I mostly spectated with an occasional doodle like these haha. I'm new to such elaborate AUs!

Pitch time!! I had pitches for each era and they were all pretty light and banter-y, so my year 1 pitch ended up fitting the vibe the best. My original pitch was 'HG + CG learn some key things about each other and plan to set up a base they can use together.' But when I started my script, I got really caught up in how they were navigating a partnership without knowing each others identities. The more I wrote through that, the more I wanted my story to be ABOUT that! So thats where my script started coming together.

Designs! I'm definitely not a confident costume designer. I was trying to go for low-tech + practical since it was early in their careers, and of course, easy to draw 😂

Process went more or less like this! Full color comics take a LONG TIME but it was a total labor of love. I had the graffiti bgs in mind from the very start since I knew it was dialogue heavy, I wanted to make sure the art was interesting and worth spending time looking at. Oh lord did I get carried away. I'm OBSESSED with the symbolism the fandom has put to the life series and so I tried to sneak in as much meaningful symbolism as possible. AND THE RESULT:

Guess I did pretty well! 😂😂😂

Anyway, I can't overstate how proud I feel to have gotten to work on this project. My whole goal as a hobbyist is to get to work with other artists I look up to and respect so this was a dream come true! Thank you everyone for reading, for 15k downloads (!!!), and for just being an awesomely creative fandom space to make art in! I hope to do more stuff like this again some day 💕

This was an amazing project, and whilst reading I knew I really wanted to draw/ put my own spin on Pearl/Scour. They were really one of my favorite characters throughout the whole story.i don’t really remember what weapon she had though so I gave her a big scythe. Loved evil pearl and the zine so much.

SO. hotguy comics zine (everyone go read it at @hotguycomiczine) had a lot of pre-creation worldbuilding go into it. some of those made it in. some of them are only obliquely referenced or didn't make it in. some of the things that are mostly only referenced i won't say yet because they're spoilers so i'll wait until the piece they'd spoil is past but! i do have one i made and am able to share.

anyway, so it's canon to hgcz that hermitopia has its own regional fast food chain. this chain is called the moopop stop, they mainly sell burgers, fries, and moopop (which is to say, milkshakes). anyone from hermitopia will proclaim it the best fast food place out of regional loyalty, the way that everyone from texas will say whatburger is.

the iconic thing moopop stop has, outside of the moopop, is the toys! and at some point after the mutations moopop stop decided to start making vigilante-themed toys. this is a controversial move many parents hate it but it's wildly popular with the other half of the population so they keep doing it.

there's just one problem: the toys fucking suck.

like. okay. sometimes the toys look relatively similar to the vigilante they're trying to make them similar too! but whatever supply chain moopop stop is using is TERRIBLE because the toys are almost always mispainted, malformed, or both. often they look kind of like they're melting. not once has the face been anything even kind of resembling an actual vigilante.

anyway so i think the first time they make a hotguy one scar is DELIGHTED! and then rapidly horrified when he realizes none of them look like him. and then delighted again. (cuteguy, meanwhile, is horrified the whole time.)

also not in our worldbuilding docs but a thing i have decided just now: bdubs meticulously collects them and sorts them into "HOTGUY", "cuteguy i guess", and "enemies". cub decides this is funny and starts giving him fake ones. no one knows who cub's supplier is but they're WEIRDLY accurate.

Grian groans, frustration settling in his chest. Get your head on straight, he thinks, irritated. Some vigilante he is, letting some random bystander shake him up so fiercely; he can’t afford to be a burden like this. He needs to get it together, before he has to watch someone else die. Hotguy is counting on him to watch his six—if Grian can’t do that, then what is he even good for? A faint shadow moving at the edge of his vision is his only warning before a hand lands on his shoulder. Grian jerks forward, fight or flight overwhelming his senses. Wings flaring, he pivots on his heel, ignoring the ache in his right wing and curling his hand into a fist… only to meet the shaded visor of his partner. “Whoa there, Birdie,” Hotguy says, ripping his hand back from Grian’s shoulder. “Little tense, are we?” All the tension zaps from Grian’s body at once. “Hotguy,” he breathes, the name spilling from him with a weak exhale. He wills his heart rate to slow, dropping his arms and relaxing his fist as his brain catches up to his body.
