Blue and Fire Engine Red Pt 9
“Are you sure you want to do this? I won’t go easy on you.”
Lena’s voice is light in its challenge, but edged with true competition.
It’s been more than a month since their confrontation, when they’d mutually agreed to keep things going. For much of that time, Lena had existed on tenterhooks, waiting for some other shoe to fall. But Kara was patient, and when nothing happened to threaten their happiness, Lena had finally relaxed, bringing a return to her playful confidence.
Kara bares her teeth in a grin. “Bring it.”
Today is the day of the intramural baseball championships, pitting the best of FDNC and NCPD against each other. They’d thought it would be fun to participate, neither thinking they’d ever manage to face the other in an actual game. Yet here they were, Precinct 42 facing off against Station 13.
“Hey!” Nia calls from the bench area. “No cavorting with the enemy, Lieutenant!”
Lena’s face creases into an exasperated eyeroll. Kara cherishes the sight, the memory of her girlfriend’s guarded features still fresh in her memory.
“Duty calls,” she drawls, leaning in for a final pre-game kiss.
“No smooching the enemy either!”
Lena huffs as Kara guffaws, giving Lena a swat to the butt as they split to return to their respective teams. Kara hears Lena say something about psyching out the competition, but Nia’s disbelief is equally audible.
“Sure, Jan.”
Kara jogs a lap around the diamond, doing her best not to stare at Lena’s legs as she does a series of lunge stretches. When Lena moves to side bends, the edge of her jersey rides up to expose a slice of skin that makes Kara nearly trip over her own feet. When Lena turns and bends backwards, stretching her spine, her grin tells Kara that she knows exactly what she’s doing.
Suddenly, Lena pauses mid-stretch. Though she straightens casually, Kara sees her eyes scan the field, then the bleachers, searching for something. Concern flashes through Kara, but before she can approach Lena, Winn Schott trots towards her.
“Hey Danvers. You ready to crush your girlfriend?”
His smile is broad and bright, and Kara automatically smiles in reciprocation. She hadn’t spent much time with Officer Schott before joining the team, but over the course of the season she’s learned that he’s a good sport, playful yet dedicated. She likes him.
“You know Lena,” she returns, “she’s not one to do things halfway.”
Winn’s nose wrinkles. “Okay, did not need to know that about you guys.” He earns a smack to the shoulder, and breaks into giggles. “Okay, okay, you know I’m joking!”
Glancing back over the field, Kara sees that Lena has been similarly wrangled, circled up with her teammates. Her focus seems to be entirely on the huddle, so Kara lets her shoulders relax.
“Come on,” she tells Winn. “Let’s get going.”
The game is close. Too close. It comes down to the final inning, with two outs and the bases loaded. The Hot Shots are at bat, trailing by one, but the Moody Blues need only one more out to end the game. From her position at shortstop, Kara swallows with anticipation as Lena steps towards the plate. The rest of her team cheers, while Kara’s jeers. Kara remains silent, mentally calculating how Lena might play it. She’s been hitting hard all game, making Kara’s team work to collect the ball and wing it back towards the bases before doubles and triples can turn into full homers. And in this suspenseful moment, Kara wouldn’t put it past Lena to fire a line drive directly into Kara’s knees.
She settles in, watching Lena’s relaxed strides to the plate, casually knocking the bat against her cleats to dislodge the packed dirt. Then, she settles into her ready stance, and waits. The pitcher winds up and drives the ball over home plate. Lena doesn’t swing. On the second, she even dodges as the pitch careens too close to her, much to the Hot Shots’ outrage. After a warning from the umpire, the exhausted pitcher takes a beat, spits, then readies himself.
The pitch is so fast Kara barely registers it’s been thrown, but the answering crack of the bat is unmistakable. Kara traces the arc of the ball up, up, and away, across the field and over the scoreboard on the far end, out of sight. Home run. Lena takes her victory lap at a trot as the other runners cross home plate one after the other, picking up her pace when she sees her team surging towards her in celebration.
While Lena gets showered with praise and gatorade, Kara laughs as her team groans and curses, sprawling on their backs in the dirt, exhausted. It’s been a tough one, giving as good as they got, but where the other officers wallow in disappointment, Kara feels exhilarated.
“Jesus,” Winn says, panting as he crosses to her from second base. “Is she superwoman?”
Kara shoots him a cocked grin, and after a beat of staring his eyes go wide. “Oh! God– Danvers, I did not mean it like that!”
Slapping him on the back, Kara chuckles. “Later, Schott!”
She trots over to the other team, wading into the crowd of bodies until she’s planted herself in front of Lena. She grips Lena’s face with both hands and kisses her soundly, dust and sweat and all. It surprises Lena, evidenced by the slight glaze in her eyes when Kara draws back.
“Good game,” Kara all but shouts to be heard. As Kara smiles up at her, she sees the tiniest wrinkle appear between Lena’s eyebrows. Green eyes lift to scan the area around them, her chin even swiveling to check behind her. Kara’s hackles lift; she knows that look– the sense of being watched.
“What’s wrong?” she asks.
Lena doesn’t respond, and Kara realizes that she hasn’t heard between the din and distraction. She touches Lena’s arm, pulling her girlfriend’s attention back towards her.
“Everything okay?”
Lena blinks, staring for a long moment before she shakes her with a disarming smile. “Yeah. Of course.”
“Hey lovebirds!” Nia calls. “Come on! We gotta treat the losers to pizza and ice cream!”
“It is tradition,” Brainy confirms. “To ease the sting of failure.”
Kara turns back to Lena, smirking. “Oh darn. Guess I’ll have to wait to give you your prize at home
”
Lena’s gaze sharpens as her words register, her previous distraction swiftly turning to hunger. “You know, I have some ice cream in my freezer–”
“Nope!” Kara chirps. “Come on, babe. Pizza and ice cream wait for no man.”
Under the din, Kara hears a plaintive whimper. Her insides melt as she settles her hand into Lena’s hand and gives a promising squeeze.
All in good time, it says. All in good time.
—
Later that night, Kara wakes up deliciously sore, and not just from the game. She lengthens her body under the covers, stretching some of the ache away. It’s a few bleary moments before she understands exactly what’s woken her.
Lena twitches and jerks in the bed beside her, her brow furrowed with anguish. Her lips move indiscernibly, silenced in sleep. A nightmare. Kara reaches to shake her awake, but retracts her hand at the last moment. She’s heard stories of unsuspecting partners trying to rouse their loved ones awake, only to be made part of the nightmare itself. She knows Lena would never consciously attack her, but in sleep? With a monstrous trauma and undisclosed past hanging over her? Kara knows better than to believe she would be an exception to the possibility.
Suddenly, Lena spasms, lashing out with a long arm. Kara only just manages to dodge before rolling out of bed and onto her feet. “Shit,” she hisses. She flips on the light on her bed stand, casting a glow throughout the room. Lena’s movements are more noticeable now, rocking to either side as though to dislodge something sitting on her chest. Her arm flails again before clenching the sheet in a white-knuckled grip.
Kara considers her options, but before she’s able to make a decision, Lena bolts upright with a sharp gasp, so suddenly that Kara flinches back in surprise. Lena’s head whips back and forth frantically, scanning the room. She jumps when she sees Kara standing beside the bed, eyes flying wide before recognition hits. For a brief moment they can do nothing but stare at each other. Kara’s sure her eyes are as wide as Lena’s which soon glaze with tears. Finally, Lena sighs, deflating a little as she wipes a hand over her face.
“Fuck,” comes the inevitable mumble. Kara watches tentatively as Lena scans the room again before slowly sliding her legs over the side of the bed, turning away from Kara. Her night shirt clings to her in cold sweat, and her hair hangs limp around her shoulders.
“You okay?” Kara asks, clearing her throat.
Lena nods without looking up. “Yeah.” Her voice is little more than a croak, and does nothing to reassure Kara. In the end, Lena sniffles huskily and swipes again at her eyes. “I’m going to get some water. You can go back to sleep. Sorry I woke you.”
With that she slips out of the room as quiet as a wraith. Kara stares after her, at a loss for what to do next. In the quiet that follows, she realizes she’s also trembling, her body stiff with adrenaline.
“Fuck,” Kara echoes Lena’s sentiment. She drops onto the side of the bed, resting her elbows heavily on her knees as she rubs her cheeks. She doesn’t feel afraid, but her body does. Only when her hands stop shaking does she rise and venture from the bedroom. Lena doesn’t look up when Kara enters the living room, but doesn’t protest when KAra settles down next to her.
Her shoulders are hunched, arms crossed around her middle, a glass of water forgotten on the coffee table. They sit in silence for several long minutes– Lena not ready to speak, and Kara loathe to break the quiet. Finally, Lena forces herself upright, lifting her head to reveal solemn features.
“You were smart,” she says roughly. “Getting out of bed.”
Kara takes it as an invitation to take Lena’s hand, who allows their fingers to intertwine. Clearing her throat, Lena looks at her.
“Did I hurt you?”
“No,” Kara promises, shaking her head quickly. “I’m good. Are you good?”
Lena doesn’t respond. Tension still limns her frame, her breathing almost shallow as they sit, as though Lena can’t pull in a full breath. An idea pops into Kara’s head, and she gives Lena’s hand a squeeze. “Hey. Wanna go for a walk?”
The offer is accepted with a quiet nod. After pulling on their sweatpants and sneakers, they step out into the night. They’re the only ones on the street at this hour, and they hold hands as they silently walk towards the nearby park. When the scent of sleeping trees drifts across their senses, Kara finally feels Lena start to relax. The air isn’t quite chill, just cold enough to bring a tint of pink to her partner’s cheeks.
Halfway across the bridge spanning a small creek, Lena draws to a stop against the wrought iron rail. Kara watches her turn her head to the sky, eyes reflecting every star peeking through the cloud cover. Soft moonlight dapples across Lena’s skin, and Kara feels her heart lurch, stuttering a little with an emotion she can’t quite describe.
“Thanks,” Lena murmurs. “This was a good idea.”
Kara slides closer, until the warmth of Lena’s shoulder melds with hers. “It always helped me, when I had nightmares. After the shooting, there were nights I felt like I was still in that bathroom stall, with the walls closing in.” She smiles thinly. “Sometimes a little breeze is enough to ground a person.”
“Or blow them away entirely.” Lena’s voice is even, but low. Vulnerable.
Kara gazes at her. “Is that how you feel right now? Like you might blow away?”
Lena sighs, then turns her gaze from the sky to Kara. “Let’s just say it’s not the breeze keeping me grounded.” Her thumb brushes the back of Kara’s hand in soft circles, sending a thrum of something deep through Kara. She leans her head against Lena’s shoulder, gazing out across the trees lining the creek while Lena returns her attention to the sky.
“It’s actually one of the things I miss about the desert,” Lena says gently. Kara hums a low question. “The sky. You could see the whole Milky Way out there, painting the entire sky. It was
breathtaking. Even on the most miserable days, it still awed me.”
You awe me, Kara longs to say. You are breathtaking.
She doesn’t.
“Maybe we could go camping,” she suggests instead. “Chase the open sky.”
Lena grunts, but the sound of it doesn’t completely nix the idea. Kara bumps her with a hip.
“I could see you on a Harley for sure.”
Finally, Lena laughs. “Nah,” Lena returns. “We’ll take the truck– sleep in the bed.”
“With all the rust mites? Psh.”
“All right, fine. Just some bedrolls around a fire. Like Xena and Gabrielle.”
Kara grins. “Can I be Xena?”
“Nope. You’ve the soul of a poet, Miss Artiste.”
It draws a chuckle from Kara. When Lena lifts her arm, Kara tucks herself against her, soaking in the proximity.
I love you, she wants to say. I cherish you.
She doesn’t.

What do you think is the biggest design miss that araki made?
Sigh.. I'm actually just kind of a suckered and actually don't hate a lot of arakis designs
Their whack and crazy! But I like them their fun to draw
But to have a list of some of my least favirote design choices from araki lol
Blonde santana was so nasty
The World. It's probably one of my least davirote stand designs..
Dios nasty powered up look at the end of part 3, he looks like someone's drugged up granny who got let loose into the sephora for the girls on duty to do whatever to
I love shigechi but what the fick is going on with his head man...
Hazamada having a design I enjoy while being a nasty fuckin guy...
Fugo is a design that I hate the way araki draws his hair mostly because I can tell what he was tryna do, but fuckin sucked at it
GER is also such a huge disappointment as a design especially after getting treated to Silver Chariots beautiful swag requiem. I feel like araki wanted a specific vibe with it and it just didn't hit the mark
Diavolos whole cucking design tbh, I really don't like it. But the fact that his tattoos are based on a cute netted top is so sad because araki fucking sucks are drawing tattoos so fucking much, he shoulda just kept it as a mesh top...
Not really a design element, but arakis whole fatphobia and not seemingly to be able to draw fat characters as not evil or a joke. Because I hate to say it, araki has shown clear skills in being able to draw fat people and do a good job that looks good! But he doesn't seem to know how to be normal and treat fat people like normal enjoyable characters
OK THIS OKE HURTS THE MOST TO SAY IM SO SORRY BUT.... emres fucking outfit yall. I think it sucks so hard what the ever loving fuck is she wearing yall.. the elf tunic with the sweater vest and sweat pants... she's so nicely put togeather from the neck up.
... I just dont really like diver downs design.. sorry or whatever lol
Araki slimming down and making hot pants smaller and curvier as SBR went on...
Giving mountain tim such a sick awesome design only to make him suck at the very last second
In a silent way was just bad, like that's not a hard point to make it was a bad call
Ok... I take a lot of love with fucked up designs that I acknowledge as being typical 'weird fucked up designs araki has done' and actually love them... but what the fuck is up with Poor Tom like... holy shit what is this look...
The schott keys stands just kinda sucked. They were boring and ones a farther in a soccer ball. The aphex twins chapters some of my least fav jjl chapters sorry they just weren't very fun
And lastly one more sorry to women's and stuff.. but dragons tattoos also suck yall. Araki like 80% of the time is just the worst tattoo designer imo I think their just not very good. I like parts of it but as a full design I'm like.. it's not my favirote

Preparing for the Future-Chapter 1
Fandom: Supergirl
Relationships: Kara Danvers/Lena Luthor
Characters: Kara Danvers, Lena Luthor, Rose Zen (Original Character), Marigold Zen (Original Character), Violet Zen (Original Character), J'onn J'onzz, Winn Schott, Bruce Wayne, Damian Wayne, Zatanna, Barry Allen
Summary: Kara, Lena, and the Zen girls start preparing for the upcoming battle. The training is hard, but they meet interesting new people along the way that will help them on their journey.
This is Part 2 of the World Collector Trilogy. Part 1 is Unwitting Rescue.
Lena leaned back and stretched in her chair. She closed her laptop and looked around her office. She was done with work-related activities for the day. Now, she had to handle personal stuff which she was a little skeptical about. Lena was startled out of her thoughts by a knock at the door.
Lena looked up and said, “Come in.”
Lena smiled as she saw Kara come through the door carrying three cups of coffee and a box of donuts.
“Hello darling,” purred Lena.
Kara smiled and said, “Hello, my love. Hope I made it in time.”
Lena looked down at her watch and mused, “We still have five minutes before our guest arrives.”
Kara breathed a sigh of relief as she sat down and put the food and drink on Lena’s desk.
“I was afraid I wasn’t going to make it. It took me a little bit to wrangle the girls to get them ready.”
Lena looked around curiously and asked, “Speaking of the girls
.”
Kara smiled and said, “They are with Jess. She offered to take them to the conference room to get cake and hot chocolate.”
Lena breathed a sigh of relief and said, “I am glad that she was able to distract them. I thought about having them in for this conversation
but
”
Kara raised an eyebrow and asked, “You want to vet her first?”
Lena smiled warily and said, “Well, we don’t know that much about her. Plus, Batman just arranged this meeting. There is no guarantee that she will take on the girls as pupils. I don’t want to get the girls’ hopes up of meeting the woman and she just turns us down.”
Kara nodded and said, “That is very sound logic
” Kara looked up at Lena with a smirk and said, “
but that is your politically correct answer. What is the real reason that you want to vet her?”
Lena looked down with a slight pout and said, “I know Batman heavily vouches for this woman since they date, but his dating history from what you told me is
how do I put this nicely
.”
Kara smirked and said, “Less than desirable.”
Lena sighed and said, “Well, yeah. You don’t think so?”
Kara looked up thoughtfully and said, “I know he hasn’t had the best track record, but this girl seems nice and Clark likes her even though he hates magic with a passion.”
Lena raised an eyebrow and asked, “Really? Are you really not concerned considering the last several people he dated? Catwoman is a kleptomaniac, Talia is a cult leader, Poison Ivy is an eco-terrorist
.”
Suddenly a young woman’s voice said, “I know I tend to be secretive, but I believe that I have enough morals not to be grouped with the likes of those maniacs.”
Kara and Lena yelped as they turned to the right and saw a young woman who appeared to be in her mid-20s. She had tan skin, brown eyes, and long black hair. She was wearing a black top hat, black jacket, white button-down shirt, a black bowtie, black skirt, black six-inch high heels, and fishnet stockings.
The woman took off her top hat, bowed, and said, “The amazing Zatanna at your service.”
Lena took a couple of moments to catch her breath and frowned.
“I do have a door for a reason.”
Zatanna smirked as she went to sit next to Kara and asked, “What is the fun in that?”
Lena rubbed her head and muttered, “I am already regretting this choice.”
Zatanna chuckled and said, “I am sorry for the theatrics. I thought that Batman would have explained my
flair for the dramatics considering my background.”
Kara nodded and said, “He did mention that you are a world-renowned magician that tours worldwide. I heard that your tour made over a billion dollars last year.”
Zatanna smiled and said, “I have become quite popular.”
Lena leaned back in her chair while eyeing Zatanna carefully and said, “Which begs to question, why would you be willing to take on three students during the middle of your tour?”
Zatanna eyed Lena coyly and said, “Well, it is not every day that you get told that an evil being is going to just pluck up our world out of existence in so many years. I know I may come across as silly to you, but I do take something like that quite seriously. I think more heroes should honestly be training our children to be ready for what is to come. Zatanna leaned back, narrowed her eyes, and asked, “One thing I am curious about though. Considering your background, why don’t you just teach the children magic?”
Lena looked at her startled while Kara chuckled and said, “Lena doesn’t have magical powers.”
Zatanna looked back and forth between Kara and Lena frowning and said, “I don’t understand.”
Lena looked at her baffled and said, “I think you are confused. I have never used magic once in my life.”
Zatanna leaned back in her chair and tapped her fingers together.
“Very curious indeed,” mused Zatanna. She got up and circled around Lena and said, “You have a huge magical aura that surrounds you.”
Lena chuckled nervously and said, “That can’t be right. I think that I would have realized if I had magical powers.”
Zatanna cocked her head at Lena and then shouted, “Laever Egaenil.”
Suddenly, Lena’s forehead glowed yellow before revealing an owl with a crown symbol on her forehead.”
Zatanna looked at Lena surprised and muttered, “Okay, I wasn’t expecting that.”

Say You'll Share With Me One Love, One Lifetime (Even If We Can't Have It)
My original plan was this scene being maybe 600 words and at most a third of the whole thing, but oops it's almost 1900 and we're getting married. So there will probably be 2 more parts to this story, eventually.
Word Count: 1890
Warnings: light angst in the beginning, brief food and alcohol mention, fade to black implied fuckin'.
Summary: Only having a month before being separated by a thousand years would make any couple do something impulsive and probably crazy, right?
It had been a perfectly routine evening. I got home from work first, so I started dinner, and it was about ten minutes from being ready when Winn walked in, kissed me on the cheek, and poured us each a drink. It was a heavier pour than usual, so I figured it had been a rough day, and he’d tell me about it later. Heavy conversations can wait until after dinner. We chatted about my day and the light parts of his as I finished cooking, and we ate on the couch and continued our way through Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
When the credits ended and the dishes were done, we sat back down on the couch, and he dropped the bomb.
“The Legion? 31st century space heroes? Led by Mon-El? That Legion?”
Winn nodded. “Yeah, Brainy can’t go back with them because of
something about his relative wiping out all other AIs? He didn’t give a lot of detail. Bottom line, he said I should take his place. They’re leaving when the ship is ready, and that’ll probably take a month.”
“That- that’s incredible! Really, I’m so proud of you and so glad that your genius is being recognized.” I smiled as best I could, and his worry lines deepened.
“I don’t have to go. I can say no.”
I sat up straighter and looked him in the eye. “No, you can’t. You are, in an infinite multiverse, singularly brilliant. And you’ve got a shrine to your two-item space dirt collection. Space, the future, being a hero- this is all of your dreams on a silver plate.”
He took my hands in his, eyes watering. “Not all of them. Not anymore. Yes, those are dreams of mine, but so is a life with you. I love you. I love the life we’ve built together!” He gestured with one hand around our apartment. “I don’t know if I can survive being somewhere you’ve been dead for a thousand years.”
I took a deep breath, fighting back tears of my own. “You can. You know how I know that?”
He rolled his eyes and smiled a little bit, knowing this game very well. “Because you love me?”
I smiled, too, and nodded. “Because I love you. You, Winn Schott, are the love of my life. I didn’t think it was possible to love someone this much before we met. I will always love you so much that you’ll be able to feel it across all of space and time.”
“Simon, no,” he said, his smile disappearing. “If I go, you have to move on. Find someone in this millennium, and be happy with them.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Sweetheart, think about it. You’re not the only one here who’s dreamed of space; how could anyone even begin to approach how goddamn hot you being a spacefaring superhero is? You’re literally setting the bar astronomically high.” I paused for a moment, thinking. “Would you call me a hypocrite if I said you should let me go in the same breath I swear I won’t let you go?”
“Not a hypocrite,” he said, shaking his head, “but definitely wasting your time. My heart will be here with you, forever.”
The fervency in his eyes was too much; I had to take my hands out of his and look away. We were both quiet for a while, but before long, I felt Winn sit up straighter. I looked over at him, and I could practically see his brain working as he stared off into the middle distance, not really seeing anything. It was beautiful, as always, so I took the opportunity to simply watch him. How am I supposed to keep going, when he’s gone?
Eventually, he came back to reality, blushing when he realized I’d been watching him. “I have an idea. It’s crazy and probably a terrible one, so I totally get it if you say no. It might even be better if you do.”
I smiled, having heard that countless times. “I’m sure it can’t be that-”
“Marry me.”
My smile fell and my jaw dropped. I searched his face for any indication of hesitancy or a joke, but all I saw was pure sincerity. “What?”
Instead of responding, he got up and walked into the bedroom. A minute or so later, he walked back out with a small black velvet box in his hands. He got down on one knee, eye level with me, since I was now frozen to my spot on the couch.
“I didn’t think I was going to do this for at least another year, but we don’t have that kind of time. You kinda stole my lines earlier, with the whole not thinking it was possible to love someone this much and love of my life stuff. All that is true for me, too.”
He took a deep breath before continuing. “Simon, you're the love and the light of my life, the home I thought I’d never get. Somehow, at the same time I was learning about aliens and superhero shit, falling in love with you was the most unexpected and wonderful thing that has ever happened to me.
I want to be your husband. I want the world to know that I am the luckiest man in the entire universe, because you chose me, even after I hurt you like I did. I want to make that up to you with a lifetime of laughter and bickering and love. We can’t have a lifetime, but will you give me a month?” He opened the box, revealing a white gold claddagh ring with a brilliant clear gem for the heart. “It’s moissanite, not diamond, because, you know, ethics. And, uh, I can sign divorce papers before I go, so you can file them if you change your mind later.”
I’d held it together through the beautiful romantic speech, but the suddenly anxious logistical addendum was too much; the tears fell. Despite everything I’d believed about marriage for my entire life, there was only one answer I could possibly give. “Yes! Yes, of course I’ll marry you!” His smile put the wonders of the world combined to shame. Without a word, he took my left hand and put the ring on, heart pointing towards me.
Once it was on, he kissed it, and I chuckled. “Pretty sure it’s supposed to go the other way until we’re actually married, my love.”
He shook his head. “If all we get as husbands is a month, I’m not wasting a moment of it with the ring facing the wrong way. And I fully intend to take you to the courthouse first thing in the morning, so it won’t be wrong for long.”
“A proposal to a wedding in
” I checked the time. “Less than 12 hours? People will talk about buns and ovens,” I joked, mock scandalized.
“Let ‘em talk. Even if I still had an oven for you to have put a bun in, I couldn’t care less. It’s none of their damn business, anyway.”
I nodded. “Fair point. I have three requests, if we’re really going to elope in the morning.”
“Anything.” The words were barely out of my mouth before he responded. “As long as you’ll marry me, anything.”
“Be careful with writing blank checks, my love. You said you wanted the whole world to know, and I’d like to
not keep it a secret, because you can’t keep a secret to save your life, and we do need 2 witnesses. But not make a big deal about it. With how recently Alex and Maggie broke off their engagement, I don’t want her to feel like we’re rubbing it in her face or anything. She’s already in enough pain- I really don’t want to make it worse.”
Not letting go of my hand, he moved back to his spot on the couch next to me. The longer his silence went on, the more I realized how devastated I would be if he changed his mind. After what felt like an eternity but was probably only about ten seconds, he nodded. “Okay, as long as you still wear the ring. Even to game night. What else you got?”
I could breathe again, and I smiled. “I’d never dream of taking it off. My second request is much lighter- a moratorium on talking about you leaving. Until the day of, we pretend like we will get our lifetime together. With, of course, the ability to call time-out or quits altogether on it. The usual safewords. And on the subject of rings, I want to get you one before the wedding. Have you put any thought into what you might want?”
He shook his head. “Yes on the pretending we’re not on a clock, but I haven’t thought about a ring I’d like. We can absolutely go ring shopping, though. Oh, also, who do you want to ask to be our witnesses?”
I thought for a moment. “I think we have to ask Kara, since it was her karaoke shenanigans that got us together in the first place.”
“Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t even consider her not being there, but if we do that, she’ll insist on making it a big deal, maybe even try to talk us out of it. How about James?”
“Yeah, you're right about Kara.” I sighed. “Definitely James, no question about it. As for the second, hear me out- Mon-El. He’s been a good friend to you, and he’ll understand better than anyone why we’re doing this. Even if he does think it’s a bad idea and tries to talk us out of it, I’m not above admitting that I’d enjoy guilting him just a bit about being the reason you’re leaving in the first place. He owes me.”
“As much as I don’t want to encourage your pettiness, you’re right,” he chuckled, and I smiled a Cheshire smile.
“Fantastic. You wanna ask him, and I’ll ask James?”
He nodded. “Sounds great.” He finally let go of my hand, taking out his phone to text Mon-El, and I did the same.
Text sent, I put my phone down and took a closer look at the ring. “The ring really is absolutely perfect. I have to ask, though, when did you buy it? You said you’d planned on doing this later and had presumably planned or maybe even rehearsed lines for me to have stolen.”
[9:36 pm] TO James Olsen: Hey, can you meet Winn and me at the courthouse tomorrow, around 10? We need a favor. Don’t tell Kara, please.
“Would you laugh if I said the day you asked me to move in?” he asked, blushing and rubbing the back of his neck.
I blinked once, twice, processing what he said. “No, but I will question your sanity. We’d been together less than a year, including the months when you were still at CatCo! I was questioning if we were moving too fast, and you were buying a ring?”’
He shrugged. “When you know, you know.”
Moved beyond words, pulled him forward by the front of his shirt and poured everything I was feeling but couldn’t say into a kiss. His phone chimed and mine lit up, but neither of us would be aware of anything except each other for the rest of the night.
