Okay so James would 100% be a Morgan crossed with Arabian. They have an official name but I’d what it is off the top of my head. Long black mane for sure. Chestnut tone probably. No socks. A blaze 100%. Can be sassy but SO LOYAL and obviously a massive flirt. Loves dressage. Prefers to race. Will beat everyone to the person handing out free apple slices.

Lily would be an Appaloosa. She would be a strawberry roan!!! Don’t @ me other horse people it’s true. This horse version of our girl will obviously bite your head off if you don’t do things her way. Once kicked man so hard his balls never descended again. Is still somehow an angel to children. Hates dressage. Get that horse in a barrel race. Pins back her ears but at the same time, rests her head on James. She is a massive mood, honestly.

Lord Potter flung himself in the saddle. The stable boy jumped backwards just in time to avoid the great horse’s hooves.  James’s volatile mood instantly transferred to Prongs, his young stallion with boundless amounts of nervous energy. As soon as he landed in the saddle they were off, flying past his friends who started shouting at him. He did not heed them.

He needed to be away, to hear only pounding hooves and the howling wind in his ears. He needed to stop hearing Mr Snape's words in his mind.

Even if he knew, rationally, there was no reason, no real reason anyway, to think Miss Evans would ever accept the unpleasant man's suit, still, the thought of him proposing to her, enraged him beyond anything he’d ever experienced. Why was that? Why did it bother him so much to think of her as another's. Was it just his severe dislike of Mr Snape? 

James knew it wasn't just that. He wanted her. He deserved her. Well, maybe he didn’t deserve her exactly, but neither did Mr Snape, who believed women were only meant to serve their husbands. He would treat her like nothing more than a good looking pet. The whole idea was absolutely repugnant. 

Prongs was on a stampede now, his mane flared out in the wind. Just like the wind swept through James's hair. If they kept going this fast his hat would surely be lost before long. The strong muscles underneath him tensed with each great stride, a hedge proved no obstacle for one swift jump cleared it with ease. 

After the second jump his mind cleared and for a while there was nothing but the contracting muscles underneath him, the rhythm of the gallop through the wide forest path, the thundering of hooves, the loud exhales of Prongs and his own short breaths.

At a clearing he slowed and stopped. The sun was out, the leaves of the trees threw their moving shadows over the mossy forest floor. Prongs snorted loudly then pulled the reins and stretched his neck, bending down to rub his face against his front legs. The motion jerked James forward. The moment of awkwardness made him laugh at himself, which reminded him again of miss Evans. She dearly liked to laugh, as he'd come to learn. She would not shy away from telling him her mind, or even tease him, and he'd come to enjoy that even more than her lovely face

Wasn’t it better that he should hear it from the horse’s mouth? Instead of driving himself crazy over what ifs and losing his mind over things that hadn't happened yet. 

What if he approached Miss Evans to ask for her hand, what would be the worst that could happen?  As if he could read his mind Prongs shook himself and sidestepped some invisible creature, nearly throwing James with his abrupt movement.

James nodded slowly but would not meet Sirius’ eyes.

“Soooo,” Sirius said in a sing-sing voice. “Who was it?”

James played with the hem of his shirt, twisting and untwisting it around his finger. “Uh,” he dropped down to a whisper. “Lily.”

Marauders as horses

inspired by this post which also reminded me of the first ever fanarts i’ve posted online, so it was nice to revisit this 17 years later! Also drawing animals again 🙈 thanks @annabtg for bringing this to my attention! I’m also tagging @polaroidcats and @hiddenmoonbeam, cause this pic is kinda similar to the TLK one, in a sense that they are drawn as an animal neither of them can turn into in canon.

I was such a horse maniac as a little girl, so the coat colours and breeds/build are not just aesthetic actually.

Lily has chestnut red coat with a subtle blanket marking on her hips (her “freckles”), even subtler socks on her legs and a stripe on her head. She is based on an Appaloosa, mainly because of the coat colour.

James has a buckskin coat because you know, he’s a buck, duh. He is based on an Arabian race horse, but can be any kind of warmblood/light horse, cause they are fast and athletic. I added some light markings around his eyes and nose to resemble his glasses, and he has a curly mane.

Sirius has a solid black coat with a star on his head (obviously). He is based on a Friesian horse because those are just so beautiful, look quite regal, and the general characteristics of the breed just fits Sirius so well. I wanted him to be tall and strong, so the size is based more on a draft horse.

Remus has a varnish roan coat, and is based on a Belgian draught horse and Fjord horse mix, because he has thicker fur, calmer nature, and a little “wildness”.

Peter has a cream coat with stocklings and a bald marking on his head. He is based on a Shetland pony, because he’s very short and has a chubby looking body.

Snape has a blue roan coat, no markings. He is based on an Oldenburger horse, because i just wanted to highlight how thin he is. German warmbloods are usually “specialzed” in certain tasks such as show jumping or hunting, which i think suits Snape’s canon expertise in Poitions and Dark magic well enough.

I think this fic captures their inquisitive nature perfectly. Through their banter, you can see just how compassionate and selfless James is and how he can be very sincere despite his antics. Lily is described in canon as vivacious and this fic illustrates how her reserved nature dissolves when in good company.

You would have found the "next big fic" in the fandom already if you were more willing to read wips. Reading them hyping up the writer with comments and kudos keeps the work going. That gives the writer more incentive to complete the work and more incentive for the work to then blow up.

A lot of people (not all, not even most, but enough that it's extremely evident) who write Jegulily very clearly only do it because they want to write something Jegulus but they're afraid to get hate from Jily shippers.

If you can get over the things that Peter, Regulus, Barty, and Evan did in canon enough to include/head canon them in canon divergent or alternate universe works and make them the good guys you should get off your high horse and do the same with Snape.

Outside of it being a very easy plot device a lot of the marauders fandom write Snape negatively because you can't handle the idea of Lily being presented in/with a non-crack heterosexual relationship with anyone but James

The demographic age change in the fandom skewing significantly younger than ever before has ruined a lot of aspects of the works in the fandom especially with the rising puritan culture of the Gen Alpha/Gen Z cuspers. You guys are prudes and if you don't want to read explicit works and smut move on, there is literally no need to interact.

People will sit on here and cry that the girls are underdeveloped and neglected in fanworks, and then play Ring-Around-the-Rosie with their relationships rather than bothering to develop them into something consistent and impactful. At this point there are so many half baked ideas that you could literally just swap out the names for any of the girls in any work and most people probably wouldn't notice.

WRITE A FUCKING OUTLINE!!!! It doesn't even have to be deep or well done, but you should have a vague concept as to the direction that your story is going in.

Most of you don't know how to use AO3 properly. Why the fuck are you marking a work as completed when it is so so very clearly not. Why in the world would you not include important tags just for shock value. And for the love of God, write a summary. I don't care if it's a one paragraph excerpt of your work followed by a "this is the one where this happens". I'm not gonna read your story if I don't know what it's about.
