Friday Night Fright

Tonight’s fill is “Down.” Part of Hulu’s monthly horror movie series titled Into The Dark Down. I honestly wasn't even considering watching this movie at all. I wasn't seeing any movie that particularly stood out, so my brother picked out this jem...

In this movie, Valentines Day takes a dark twist when our main characters Jeniffer and Guy get stuck in an elevator, Jennifer just about to catch a plane and meet up with her ex-fiance. She and Guy try and make the best of their situation and engage in a little friendly banter, through their time stuck in the elevator, they share wine, Hersheys Kisses, and secrets. The pair go through a somewhat honeymoon phase during the nearly two day period by getting to know each other, Guy revealing he had noticed her around the building and kinda had a crush on her. All this honesty and feelings eventually lead to sex, Guy telling Jennifer he was in love with her. Jennifer brushes him off, saying it was just a casual thing and that she still had plans to make up with her fiance. This revelation causes Guy to go fucking crazy, him revealing he had purposely trapped her in the elevator with him just so he could be with her. Shit goes south in a struggle between the two and Guy’s elevator key is broken, trapping them for even longer.

There's more I could add, but you really only need to know the following:Guy is a fucking psychopath and stalker.

When I was watching the beginning of the movie, I thought I was watching some romantic comedy on Hallmark or something. The entire first act is the two being all cute with a romantic subtext. As the movie went on, it seemed more like the thriller/horror movie I expected it to be. I think the whole point of this movie was to corrupt or possibly mock those cheesy romantic films. The director made this film into a dark reflection of “instant love” often used in movies and books,instead of the two liking each other instantly and wanting to pursue a relationship because its “fate” or “true love,” this movies plot is nearly the opposite. they take that stereotypical nice guy and make him manipulate a woman into loving him because of “fate” or “true love.”

Whatever, this movie wasn't great. It had potential, but ultimately failed.
