Hello everyone! The Sarasota Dolphin Research Program and Mote Marine Laboratory was devastated by Milton and Helene. I interned at the SDRP over the summer for research and it's an amazing place! Both the SDRP and Mote need funds to rebuild.

And while I'm at it, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (home of Winter and Hope) was also devastated. They are a vital resource to the aquarium and are asking for purchases from their wishlist and donations

There are relatively few other places that have a combination of industrialised countries around a largely enclosed sea, intensive agriculture, and pressures from fishing going back centuries. But the wonderful thing about nature is that it can recover pretty quickly if you give it the chance,” says Juniper. Bottlenose dolphins, along with humpback and minke whales, have been spotted in greater numbers in recent years along England’s North Sea coast, monitoring groups say. Their reasons for returning are not entirely clear. Grey seals – once in danger of disappearing around the UK – are flourishing. Visits to colonies on Norfolk beaches – where thousands of pups are born every year – have become a Christmas ritual for local people. Around the beach at Horsey, nearly 4,000 seal pups were born last year during a record-breaking season. “We know the grey seals are doing well, which is fantastic news, and we know that’s also true of other species in the North Sea,” says Bex Lynam, marine advocacy manager for North Sea Wildlife Trusts. “Bottlenose dolphins – which we weren’t seeing off the Yorkshire coast until the last five years – have been recorded in a huge number of sightings. It’s clear they have enough food. They are also calving down here, which is fantastic,” she says.

And I’m happy to oblige some Frankie 😌 fret not, he’s not in the character bin, he’s just been a little repurposed since I’ve changed some of the story. I’ve since made him a sort of shipyard foreman for Marrowtide. He lets a lot of stuff slide for Kraw, under the table dealings due to personal feelings and all.

Has seaworld ever "drugged" their animals like some people say?

In the context people typically use the word? No.

Are their animals on medications? When required, of course. As would any animal in responsible human care. Contraceptives and vitamins are routine in managed marine mammals, and I’ve also seen antibiotics, antifungals, GI protectants, and analgesics (pain medications) used in cetaceans if deemed medically necessary.

Diazepam (Valium) is the most common medication used for sedation in cetaceans. This is frequently given before medical procedures (like endoscopy) or transportation, and yes, I have seen it used in this context. It’s not used to “drug them into performing.”

Diazepam has also been used for major behavioral disorders in some animal species. I believe it has been used in individual cetaceans for this purpose, but I have never personally seen this.

Early 2018 I made daily drawings for a little while. Photo studies scribbled in the edge of my notebook, with a short something about the day. I wasn't in the best of places back then.
