The lightning tree
There has been a consistent recurrence of trees throughout Taylor’s videography over the years. The hunger games series is particular could contain the missing context to understand what the trees represent.
(This was originally posted on X in reply to a comment about the invisible string running through various eras as a fuse for a string of TnT set to go off in succession once triggered. It was also noted that this may extend outside of the TSCU, which I agree with.)
In the hunger games, the wire or thread used throughout the arena (invisible string) is repurposed as a conductor to blow everything up to end the cycle of torturing the next generation. And the sequel ✌🏼catching fire is based on the Truman show. “Moves and countermoves.” It’s planning three steps ahead in a chess game against an opponent who is playing checkers and trying to back you into a corner. The predictability of those around them is what made it possible to plan so far in advance to dismantle the system.
Extending it beyond the TSCU (Taylor Swift Cinematic Universe) creates more connections while leaving no evidence, but it’s just subtle enough that those who are in the know can see it. Just like Truman found a way to communicate with his best friend in plain sight.
The visuals of the mastermind performance echoes the predictable clockwork pattern seen in catching fire. Just like Chely Wright said it would take someone with a level of fame and influence like Taylor has now to enact lasting change within the industry. And just like Truman and Katniss, Taylor is the one standing in the spotlight waiting for the perfect moment to strike when the storm is at its very peak (11.59pm) so her attack creates as much damage/impact as possible. We saw this play out with endorsing Kamala and mentioning Travis in her speech.
“Imagine this. You are sitting on a beach, cold and windswept. The sea is dark and angry before you. The sun sets in muted colors. You finish scrawling on the parchment. Your pen dries up as you reach the end of a story in 11 parts. None of it makes sense anyway. You're sick of having to dilute everything so far beyond recognition. But a story told through metaphor is still a story told. Even the great poet Sappho is survived by stilted fragments and mistranslated lyrics. Maybe that is the beautiful curse people like us must all share. Perhaps loving someone the world doesn't approve of forces you to be clever.” - 🎃 anon
Spider web
Honourable mention: Presley Cash with the spiderwebs that replicate the pattern of the clocks mentioned above. I’ve said this before, but the wheel of the year isn’t talked about enough when discussing clocks. In this case midnight is the end of all hallows eve and marks the beginning of the pagan new year. Does this make Presley the black cat version of the white rabbit? 🪞🕸️🐈⬛
The trees
There are so many tree references throughout Taylor’s music videos. I had this list saved for a while but wasn’t sure what direction it was going in until now. And for context these are the trees referenced throughout the hunger game series.

The Lorax
The Lorax
For context: The Lorax movie begins with Mr O’Hare taking advantage of the fact that all the trees were cut down to begin creating a town reliant on bottled air to survive. The main character Ted tries to impress his crush Audrey (Taylor’s character) and begins the search for a real tree. With the help of his grandmother, Ted embarks on a journey out of town as he learns about how the Once-ler instigated the destruction of the trees despite many warnings from the Lorax (who speaks for the trees).
The Once-ler (the anti hero) spends his life as an outcast on the edge of town. “When I picture my hometown there’s a bronze spray-tanned statue of you, and a plaque underneath it that threatens to push me down the stairs at our school.” He’s the magician that put on a show to impress everyone out of desperation to fit in. In the end he redeems himself by giving Ted and Audrey the last tree seed so that they can plant it in the centre of the town for all to see. In the process the golden statue of Mr O’Hare falls over and creates the first crack in the fake grass, revealing the real soil underneath. “Touch grass” -Katy Perry. The town comes around to the idea of changing the way things are done after they see the real tree with their own eyes.
In the end Audrey was the first one to speak up and question if there was a better way to live and Ted (who became her boyfriend) ended up being the one who created change by taking her idea from a dream to reality. I can’t help but wonder if this is what happened with TNT?
There are so many elements of this movie that are applicable to the bigger picture, but viewing the trees as a metaphor for what celebrities endure is eye opening to say the least. ❤️🩹
“My beloved ghost and me. Sitting in a tree. D-Y-I-N-G.” -How did it end?
Animal crossing
Honourable mention -Hayley Williams referencing the trees from Animal crossing. The trees and the game in general have a similar fake look to them as the scenery in the Lorax movie. This feels like an acknowledgement of the fantasy vs reality so many experience throughout the industry and that not everything we see is as it seems.
Real vs fake
To circle back to the connection between the trees and the invisible string, the willow music video is where these two elements come together. At first I thought the communal nature of the orbs represented the New Romantics, but viewing it through the context of the Lorax it now feels like a reference to everyone who benefits from the system staying the way it is. The real vs manufactured trees.
Unravelling the thread and sharing it around ensures that artists can thrive without being dependent on sticking to the old ways. In an interview Taylor mentioned how she likes to network at parties and how easy it is to share contact details and group photos etc through airdrop without leaving a trace. I feel like this is one of the ways experienced artists are sharing their wisdom with the new generation like Ice Spice, Gracie Abrams, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan.
And for all of us watching it all unfold from home, we have the opportunity to choose which narrative to focus on. We can either sit back and wait for a grand reveal or pay attention to the cracks gradually forming in the facade.
“Please picture me in the trees”
A tortured poet,

BRF Reading - 1st of May, 2024
This is speculation only
Cards drawn on the 1st of May, 2024
Question: Why did King Charles make Princess Catherine a Royal Companion of the Order of Companions of Honour? Why did he give her that particular honour?
Interpretation: He thought it was the most appropriate honour to give her as a symbol of his support for her.
Card One: The Seven of Pentacles
This is a card of harvest, of reaping the rewards for your hard work. (It has other meanings for me that are not applicable here). The King chose this particular honour for Princess Catherine because of her work for the BRF. He thought it was the most appropriate order to give to her as a reward for all her hard work.
The King had to change the details of the honour so he was able to give it to Princess Catherine (see the italicised text below for details). He must have thought it worthwhile to do so as otherwise he could have given her another honour instead.
[Before it was awarded to her, the honour was limited to 65 members, all from the Commonwealth Realms. The quota was 47 members from the United Kingdom, seven from Australia, four from New Zealand, and seven from other Commonwealth realms. People from other countries (both Commonwealth countries who were not Commonwealth Realms and countries who were not part of the Commonwealth of Nations) could be awarded the honour as an Honorary Member. The honour is awarded today to people who have made a major contribution to the arts, science, medicine, or government lasting over a long period of time. The King added a separate category to this honour, that of a Royal Companion of the Companions of Honour, so he could give it to Princess Catherine. This category is separate to the 65 Members of the order and does not take up any of those 65 places. ]
Card Two: The Page of Wands
Pages are messengers, and Wands are creativity and/or PR, so this honour was given in part as a message. I think it was given as a sign of support to Princess Catherine, especially after she had suffered months of vicious press from the media. I don't know when the King decided to give her this honour, whether it was before or after the months of the press onslaught. but it does seem to be intended as a recognition of her creativity/artistic talent and a message to the people that she has the support of the King. My cynical self is pointing out that this could also be a move designed to help the PR image of The King, but I think that in this case it was mainly intended as a message of support for Princess Catherine.
Card Three: The Three of Wands in Reverse
The Three of Wands is a card of having your early plans come to fruition, seeing your ships come in, being able to expand and grow. In the reverse, it signifies delays, obstacles, plans failing in the early stages, a lack of progress. This meaning doesn't make sense, as the first card, the Seven f Pentacles, clearly says that this honour is a reward for hard work.
The Three of Wands in this deck has another meaning for me. It is my card for the Line of Succession and for the power of the crown being passed down to another person, either by death or by regency. Here the card is in the reverse, so the message is that this person _ Princess Catherine - is not a royal and has no place in the line of succession. This is why she was given an honour that is normally given to non royals - to highlight that while the King supports her, he does not see her as a royal, or of being of equal standing with those of royal blood.
I drew a clarifier for this card to make sure I had the meaning correct. The clarifier was the Nine of Cups in Reverse.
Upright, this card means emotional satisfaction, wishes coming true, contentment. In the reverse, it means dissatisfaction, unhappiness, arrogance, and snobbery. This is a confirmation of the message in the Three of Swords in reverse - the King does not think Princess Catherine is worthy of an honour that is usually given to royals because she is not of royal blood, or even an aristocrat. The Nine of Cups can be a very smug card, and there is definitely an energy of smugness coming from this card - an "I put her in her place" smug and self-satisfied energy.
Underlying Energy: The Page of Pentacles in Reverse.
Pages are messengers, and Pentacles are about status and money, so this card is about a message about status and money. In the reverse, it is not a happy message, but rather bad news. It can also mean that someone is considered immature, irresponsible, lazy etc.
The message I am getting from this card is that The King did not want to elevate Princess Catherine by giving her an honour. I think that he was happy to support her, but he did not want her getting 'above herself' or to have any great elevation in rank as a result of this honour. He may even have considered her irresponsible for insisting on her privacy and not spilling all her medical details to the press the moment she received them, or lazy in taking so much time off work to recover from her surgery and subsequent cancer diagnosis.
The Page if Pentacles is my card for the UK, and in the reverse it says that the King thinks that Princess Catherine should be rejected by the UK for her behaviour? It is hard to describe the energy. There is a definite sense of disapproval coming from this card, a sense that Princess Catherine has somehow failed the UK by her behaviour (I don't know how else to describe this).
Conclusion:
There are two conflicting energies in this reading. First, there is support for the Princess of Wales and the careful selection of an honour that would show that she had the King's support. The presentation of the honour was meant to send a message that she has the support of the King behind her.
Second, there is an energy that says although the King supports the Princess of Wales, he views her as a commoner and not a royal, and therefore he was very careful in selecting the honour to make sure it would not elevate her unduly or give her a swelled head. He did not want it to appear that she was equal to someone with royal blood in any way. There is also an energy that says The King thinks her actions were unwise/immature, and she would have been better off following his example of telling the media about his medical condition and continuing to work throughout his treatment for cancer.

Enneagram Social Instinct (SO)
Summary of the Social Instinct:
Key words: connection, contribution, participation, adaptation, involvement, mirroring, attunement, cooperation, reciprocation, accommodation
(note: there's a common misconception about the social instinct being correlated to being extroverted or social. This is not the case, introverts (cognitively) can be a social subtype and even the most reserved or quiet individuals. The social instinct is simply the instinctual drive to connect, engage and contribute to others. In some cases, social subtypes can be most prone to social anxiety due to the heightened sensitivity of their position in the world)
Main concerns:
Maintaining the sense of value gained from participating in activities with others (be it group, family, community, friends, colleagues, etc)
to be part of something larger than themselves (social media is a great example of the social instinct, because we all innately are looking to satiate that need for contribution and involvement)
Main focuses:
to establish a social standing/position in society
building personal value, sense of accomplishment and security with others
to know what is going on in the world/community; can manifest as gossiping, world news, celebrities, events, politics, etc.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Social subtypes are sensitive and attuned to the hierarchical social structure and group norms; emphasis on groups; 'out-groups', 'in-groups'
Have the capacity to form and sustain relationships over a long-period
comprehension of one's position and place (e.g 'am I a loner? Am I accepted? do I have value here?, I feel like an outcast, what do we have in common? Are we close? etc')
nuances of social environments, etiquette, cues, boundaries, status and power, behaviour, etc
being able to understand and sense impact of actions on others
What this can manifest as:
desire for acclaim/fame, attention, popularity, recognition, success, honour, leadership, appreciation, to have high social status, etc
How the Social instinct may manifest when unhealthy/distorted:
Antisocial behaviour, resentment over society and people, anxieties and self-defeating behaviours, overly preoccupied about self-image (to others), fear of exclusion or being devalued, avoidance of social endeavours, cynicism and distrustfulness, etc.
The Social instinct, however, is actually something much more fundamental. It is a powerful desire, found in all human beings, to be liked, approved of, and to feel safe with others. On our own, we are rather weak and vulnerable and can easily fall prey to a hostile environment. We lack the claws, fangs, and fur of other animals, and if we did not band together and cooperate with each other, it is unlikely that our species, or we as individuals, would be able to survive. Being able to adjust ourselves to others and be acceptable is a fundamental, survival based human instinct.

The Fall of Anne Boleyn
On the day of Katherine of Aragon's funeral, Anne Boleyn miscarried a son. Henry VIII was so disappointed that he started entertaining doubts as to the validity of his marriage to her. At this time, Henry had a new love interest in the person of Jane Seymour, one of Anne’s maids of honour. Many believed that with Katherine’s death the King could easily discard Anne and remarry without controversy. The main goal of the conservatives was to see Henry VIII annulling his marriage to Anne, send her away from court in disgrace, returning to the Catholic Church and reinstating his elder daughter Mary to the line of succession. The conservative party of the court was unaware of what was about to happen.
Around the beginning of 1536, Thomas Cromwell was told a story. In the French king’s court, he was informed, rumours about Anne Boleyn’s sexual fidelity were flying: letters had been obtained in which she was accused of adultery. This story reached England by means of Stephen Gardiner, Bishop of Winchester, who had been Henry VIII’s resident ambassador at the French court since the previous September. Henry VIII was furious, but, as ever, well able to dissemble his rage, and a discreet investigation was ordered. Of course, he could not publicly announce that he doubted his wife after he had rearranged the religious and political framework of Europe in order to marry her. Even while her behaviour was under investigation he continued to push for European recognition of his annulment and remarriage, and for Anne’s status as Queen of England. Politics was ever thus. The source for the January investigation into Anne’s fidelity is Alexander Ales, a Scottish theologian who was in London around this time. He later recounted these events in a letter to Anne Boleyn’s daughter Elizabeth I in September 1559.
Thomas Cromwell soon began interrogating Anne’s ladies-in-waiting, hoping to build a case against the Queen. Anne Boleyn must have been aware that Francis I of France was spreading unfavourable reports about her in his country. In March 1536, for instance, he revealed to the papal nuncio that Anne—“that woman”, as he coldly referred to her—was not really with child but pretended to have miscarried a son. Anne’s marriage was declared unlawful and invalid – after three years of Henry’s supporters arguing the opposite – due to his affinity with Anne’s sister. The ploy Henry had used to annul his marriage with Katherine was at once resurrected to ensure that Anne did not die a queen.
Accused of adultery with several gentlemen, incest with her brother George, plotting the King's death, and also reputed to have ensnared Henry VIII with witchcraft, Anne Boleyn was condemned to death and beheaded. The terrible fate that had haunted Katherine of Aragon, the execution of a queen on the order of her once loving husband, had come to pass. Katherine had narrowly avoided it, but the full force of Henry’s wrath descended upon the head of her rival.
The imperial ambassador Chapuys, a skilled lawyer himself, was shocked that Anne and her alleged lovers “were sentenced on mere presumption or on very slight grounds, without legal proof or valid confession”. Anne protested her innocence and said that no one could bring witnesses against her misconduct because she was not guilty. Only Mark Smeaton confessed to have had three sexual encounters with Anne, but he may have been tortured; historical sources are not unanimous on this issue. Thomas Cromwell later told Chapuys that the King ordered him to get rid of his Queen. Henry VIII’s peculiar remorse for the wrong he had done Anne Boleyn by putting her to death on a false accusation” expressed on his deathbed and recorded by the contemporary Franciscan French monk André Thevet, who resided in England at that time, confirm his words.
The day after Anne Boleyn’s execution, the French ambassador rushed to Henry VIII’s private chambers to propose a new marriage treaty. Francis I desired Henry VIII to marry his own daughter, the sixteen-year-old Madame Madeleine. Henry protested, he would not marry Madame Madeleine because she was “too young for him”, and besides, he already had “too much experience of French bringing up and manners”, alluding to the late Anne Boleyn. He also added that he preferred to marry an Englishwoman because he could punish her if she misbehaved.

Run of the Mill
Noru was the miller's son. It did not matter that his father had passed away, some three years ago, for his ancestry would always be thus, his provenance - even in biographies penned a century from now, if a family tree could be traced back, future diarists of his crimes would write - perhaps in their opening line - that he was born, remained throughout his life, and indeed died, the son of a miller.
Neither did it matter that the mill, the family business, had likewise passed into his hands, and that he had been running it successfully for those three years - in some ways more successful than it had ever been. For his father had built the mill, and that would also always be the case - if histories were written, centuries from now, if the building fell to ruin and was restored, if a museum was formed around its carcass - his father would be listed as its architect, its first proprietor.
If Noru tried to make even a minor change - raise the price of grain in keeping with the scarcity of harvests, for example - his customers, the townspeople, refused to take it seriously. For they had met him as a child, the miller's son, and of course that shy, sweet, flaxen-haired boy would never dream to extort an old man such as them - for surely such a doting son would remember his father's friends, and honour their attested agreements, the handshake inherited with his hands.
They laughed off all suggestions of a change, paying him a condescending compliment together with the original price. He was a chip off the old millstone, they might joke. He would never be a stone himself - never a miller, never a man - his own growth stunted by the pedestal installed above his head, the achievements of the father always held over the son. Long-term customers would come to reminisce, to pay their respects to his dead, but of course offered none of them to him.
"This is fine work," they would say, unable to leave it there. "You are your father's son, and no mistake."
So it was they built him up and put him down, reducing him to progeny when he had aimed for prodigy. It made Noru wonder, sometimes, to hear that said so often. Perhaps it had happened by mistake. Not his conception - his father had told him they'd longed for a child, and in any case he didn't have accidents, to hear the village tell of his career - but his parentage. For Noru to have been born beneath such a shadow, a sapling wilting under a full canopy of leafy boughs.
It was an injustice. He was good at what he need, a master in his own right, and he deserved that recognition, without the greater part of any credit funnelled off to the deceased. He had been born with this mantle, this yoke, a millstone around his neck, and he would never stand tall whilst it tethered him to the past. Noru needed to cut the cord - that much was clear. The only question was how.
The obvious answer was to move - to close down and set up shop a few villages west, where his father was unknown, and he could start again - but that wasn't possible. The mill didn't have wheels, other than those which caught the river's strength or ground his flour inside, and he couldn't take it with him. He was anchored here, rooted deep into the past, and he couldn't change that any more than he could change his heritage.
He would simply have to change the town instead.
It was the only option that remained. Noru had once heard that a person lives on for as long as somebody remembers them, and thus he set about to slay his father's ghost, the spectre that had haunted him his whole solo career. He had grown up in a shadow, but shadows could be banished in the light, and so he planned a cleansing fire to kill his father's memory, to clean the slate, to clear some space for him to rise from the ashes.
The townspeople never suspected that their grain contained shavings of henbane, for that sweet, shy, flaxen-haired boy would never grow up to become a poisoner - for such a doting son would never seek to weaken his father's friends, to lace their bread with white death, the weevil of fetid nightshade, to cause a plague that wiped out all his older customers.
He found he was immune from all suspicion, protected by the very image of that rose-cheeked child - always at his father's knee, helping to measure out the sacks, an old friend once removed - that had sealed their fate, unable to see him as anything else, unable to see the fires coming. But perhaps it took a child to raze a village. In the meantime, Noru saved the best grain aside: ready to take on the role of rescuer, to feed the young and sick, to write a legend of his own. It would take a miller to raise the town anew, and he intended to make that part his own.

The post:
People Wanted
August 28, 2024
There’s an apocryphal story about Ernest Shackleton putting an ad in the newspaper that read:
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.
If you’ve read the book Endurance by Alfred Lansing, you know how that went. Pretty legendary. One of my most treasured possessions is actually a copy of Ernest Shackleton’s Heart of the Antarctic book signed by every member of the shore party and Shackleton.
You may have heard the news that we’re going to migrate Tumblr onto WordPress. Automattic has put up a similar page calling for talented engineers of any gender who want to join the voyage.
automattic's made a ton of blunders recently but i hope they're not gonna try something like convert tumblr to run on wordpress, a project that both tumblr and wordpress engineers agreed would be a lot of work for no gain (most likely worse performance). that would be a silly thing to do.

Increasing Patron Loyalty: The Launch of the Starbucks Rewards Programme
Starbucks stands out as a shining example of how a carefully designed rewards programme can not only increase sales but also create a strong bond with customers in a competitive market where loyalty programmes are king. This case study explores the successful story of Starbucks' loyalty programme, highlighting its unique attributes and the numerous benefits it offers to the company's loyal customers as well as the coffee giant.
Increasing Revenue by Offering Rewards for Support
Starbucks' impressive performance of a 7% increase in sales in 2019 can be ascribed to their clever rewards programme. This success highlights the critical influence that a well-designed loyalty programme can have on customer behaviour. Starbucks has cleverly used its rewards programme to encourage customers to make more purchases by offering them a combination of cash incentives and alluring benefits.
Honouring fidelity with fulfilling experiences
The cleverly designed architecture of Starbucks' loyalty programme is at its heart, appealing to customers' desires for recognition and financial gain. The enticing features of the programme, which include free upgrades, drinks, food, and even customised birthday cakes, make patrons feel valued for their commitment and turn infrequent customers into ardent supporters.
Reaching the Stars: An Integrated Reward System
Starbucks utilises a hybrid loyalty programme that includes "stars," a point-based system. These stars may be redeemed for a variety of freebies; they are earned at a rate of two for each dollar spent using the Starbucks gift card or mobile app. This multi-tiered structure's flexibility allows users to customise their incentives according to their preferences, which encourages ongoing participation.
A Wide Range of Benefits
Starbucks offers a plethora of possibilities in its rewards hierarchy, inviting users to investigate several reward categories that correspond with the number of stars they have accumulated. Options include easy beverage adjustments, complementary hot drinks, pastries, artisan beverages, and even meals that are already prepared. This wide range of benefits guarantees that users of different preferences will find value in the programme, strengthening their loyalty even more.
Value Transmitted
One of the main features of Starbucks' loyalty programme is how well its value propositions are articulated. Through clear and concise explanation of the benefits, the programme encourages involvement. This openness fosters honesty and trust in addition to making it easier to understand the benefits.
Improved Client Relations
The consumer journey is completely integrated with the Starbucks reward programme. From the moment a customer uses the smartphone app to make an order to the exciting discovery of accrued incentives, the programme enhances the whole experience. This integration adds to a richer, more memorable experience and highlights the brand's customer-centric philosophy.

Strong Customer Interaction
Starbucks' sporadic "double star" days perfectly capture the company's ongoing effort to interact with its customers. Starbucks drives revenue at certain times and sustains a high level of consumer involvement all year long by giving double incentives on specific days.

With the program's tier structure, customers can move from basic prizes to more alluring offers as they accrue stars, creating an atmosphere of exclusivity. This process fosters a sense of allegiance that is based on the expectation of better outcomes. Additionally, Starbucks' dedication to treating every customer as an individual is further demonstrated by the customisable options and personalised offers.
Starbucks' loyalty programme is a powerful example of how effective well-designed reward programmes can be. Through a clever strategy of matching customers' desires for value and savings with a wide range of incentives, Starbucks has been able to cultivate a devoted following of customers.
