i've seen a misinterpretation of the caption on my dollhouse piece and like. i'm not upset about the misinterpretation but i do wanna clarify:

the "false sense of security" does not mean homura is intentionally causing harm to anyone (aside from the incubators). the world she created is fragile and was forged out of a desperation to protect those she loves, even if it means they'll all end up resenting her for her actions. any sense of normalcy or security they have while in homura's new world is literally false in that it's the result of memory manipulation, and the foundation of her world is on the brink of collapse at all times.

i fuckin love homura for all her flaws and bad decisions. i do not at all subscribe to the idea that she's evil in any sense of the word, but i also don't think she "had" to rewrite the universe in her own image, yknow? there were plenty of other ways she coulda protected madoka from the incubators' influence post-rebellion. the reason why she threw away her only chance at true happiness was because she had been pushed to her absolute limit during rebellion and was in no state of mind to be making good decisions

waking from my slumber just to say:

everyone ignores this, but at the end of the original manga (aka not the new version) homura doesnt use madokas red ribbons as a substitute for her old hairband. she uses them to make twintails too, similar to madokas own but way longer.

ive always loved twintails homura and to this day im still surprised nobody ever mentions that goated design.

also, mamis stockings are purple, which ive always noted was an interesting choice... until i realized madoka also has someone elses colors in her outfit: yellow on the body of her dress. its a stretch, but sayaka also has a bit of yellow (her hairpins and ig the hilts of her swords) and kyouko has pink on the skirt part of her dress. meanwhile, homura seems to be the only one who doesnt integrate anybody elses colors...

while i believe that the diamonds on her legging-boots are more of a reference to her soul gem shape, i never noticed these other similarities. i once read somewhere that madoka magica has wonderful magical girl designs, because despite the outfits being clearly distinct and not following the "all magical girls have the same outfit except the colors change" à la sailor moon and others, theyre still aesthetically consistent. i never understood how exactly, until now.

So I recently noticed something about Homura Akemi’s magical girl outfit that I’ve never seen anyone else mention. Probably because it’s honestly a bit of a stretch but I think it’s fun.

So in her magical girl design she has this weird chain of diamonds down her leggings (boots??? Both???) that always confused me because of how much it looked like Kyoko’s chains. It’s was then also realized that she and Mami are the only girls to have a ribbon neck tie and a bow at the back of their dress. And I tried to see if she had design aspects that aligned with Sayaka and Madoka, and I think sayaka’s is a little bit of a stretch, but they both wear a pleated skirt that is their theme color with a white trim at the end of it.

But I realized something fun when I got to thinking about madoka’s outfit and seeing if anything matched, and I realized that both she and Madoka have a hairstyle that comes in two and are tied with ribbons (Madoka has twin tails, Homura has twin braids). Homura later wears Madokas red ribbons after she becomes Madokami. And then I realized that Homura doesn’t have anything matching Madoka for most of the series. The only thing that tied her to Madoka she renounced to try to save her, and she only gets something that ties back to her after she failed.

Anyways again bit of a stretch but I think it’s fun :)

Meka's hair might seem a bit weird, but I hope it's obvious that I've been trying to make a change to each of the club members' hair. I always dislike physical similarities throughout the whole club, hence my changes to the drama and occult club. Despite different-colored dye, logically speaking, it IS strange that each of the members all have silver hair.

This is why I gave Horo orange hair with yellow streaks (rather than silver hair with orange streaks) and Yaku green hair with lighter green streaks (rather than silver hair with green streaks).

Anyway, onto Meka (Nikauru as I misspelled it in the picture 🤦‍♀️), I don't see her as an anime fanatic like Yaku. I'm sure that's something that they talk about, with Yaku ranting about the plot and then Meka explaining the science of how the mecha was made and how she plans on doing the same. Maybe how she speaks is a bit too complicated for Yaku?

She probably takes her projects more serious than Yaku or Horo since Yaku actively tries to make friends and Horo is usually busy with his girlfriend whenever he isn't working. Outside of studying how the mechas look and might work, Meka doesn't often prioritizes others over her work. Homu no longer allows her to, and Enpitsu is really just her weekly bad luck streak.

So, Homura right? Homuhomu, Homegirl herself. She's a deeply broken girl.

I'm gonna talk about what I believe to be some of the why's, beyond just the looping itself.

Now, other than Madoka (A topic for an entirely different rant, honestly) and maybe Oriko (I mean, *gestures vaguely* look at the bitch, she's good at her job (Traumatizing Homosexuals)) I'd say a certain girl has hurt Homura more than anyone else.

Who?

Miki Sayaka. (Though you could argue Mami too) Now some might think this has to do with the general fragility of her mental state, but her witching out isn't what I'd say is the focus. It's the distrust.

Sayaka, despite how i usually see it passed over, was in the end one of Homura's first friends (Excluding maybe one or two people from before her surgery, but we haven't seen much implying Homu ever had friends before Madoka picked her up like a stray cat). Sayaka was, and is, someone who's opinion Homura values quite a bit, and her opinion of Homu herself hasn't exactly been good through much of the loops.

And here, I'd like to argue that this is a rather core hurt, part of turning Homura into who and what she is now. That rejection from someone who she knew as among the first to accept her, from one of her first friends.

Imagine, for a moment, the pain each time she was called evil, a monster, by that upbeat girl who was so strong and so brave. The girl that, if you ask me, looking back at Homu with the golfclub, she tried to model herself after.

It really is something I've seen quite a few fics forget, that Homura and Sayaka were friends in the beginning, that in the mind of the broken girl who doomed herself to never grow up they still are. (Sidenote : I've considered writing a snippet of Homura and Sayaka set in the Homurinth, or maybe in that world she made after her apotheosis, have them talk and have Sayaka mention that she came with in part to apologise, for all the hurtful words she'd spoken.)

Miki Sayaka is a brave, headstrong yet fragile girl, one that you can't help but admire, and I believe that Akemi Homura was swept up in that wave too. That, though they've both respectively forgotten and repressed the fact, Sayaka was an idol in the mind of that lost, lonely girl, a Hero amongst those who saved her. And perhaps that, too, is why Homura despises Sayaka's ambition to be such.

tw/cw: brief mention of rape

Lily finally was back today, school is honestly sososo boring without her. I hated having to just sit in a semi uncomfortable and listen to people I don't even like talk because I have nowhere else to be. She liked the birthday present I got for her which is good and she didn't get assaulted on her cruise which is also good. when I herd about the rape cases that were happening on the boat she was on I swear I was so floored. Like, 2 cases. in less the 48 hours. how?? NEVER going on a cruise (probably). Anyway, today we were offsite to see a play. The peasant prince. It was a play adaptation of the movie mao's last dancer. Idk how relevant that movie is cause I've never heard of it personally until my teacher showed us a trailer. The start was VERY odd, the man character jumping around on the floor like a frog. He was meant to be a child, but it was a grown man jumping around on the floor like a frog and pretending to fart or whatever. not to mention the ending was abrupt, there was a good 5 minuets of conflict in this 1 hour play. he fights government officials, wins and that's it. they didn't explore the conflict at ALL. it was 50 minuets of how the main character got to where he was, it was like those flashback scenes where they have a moment from near the end and then the rest is like a flashback and then they go back to the moment to wrap it up (I hope this will makes sense to future me). Which was okay but It wasn't as satisfying as it could be cause it wrapped up a whole load of nothing. actors were great though, 5.5/10 play. after the play, we went to garb some lunch. I chose subway cause 1. I am NOT going to taco bell. 2. I can get chicken and chips any day I want. 3. cookie. There is no footlong cookie in Australia and I think that's to spite me personally, its an attack on my being. I had a whole feast. It consisted of a footlong (white bread, Ham, cheddar cheese, olives. toasted), chicken bites, two cookies (chocolate chip and double choc) and a lipton ice tea. best part is it was $15. a whole feast for $15 dollars. What's worse is ate it all like it was nothing. scoofed it down in around 6-10 minuets. not before doing some oshikatsu of course, I did a picture of both homu and vyn.. ... my friend gave me the idea to make it look like homu ate the food (see picture here). SOCUTE!! It was so yummy and so filling. then we went back to school. Turns out 10 people vaped on the bus so they all got suspended LMAO. I told my mum about it and she was like "were you one of them?" and I was like "no?" and then she said "I know my little nerd".... EVEN MY MUM THINKS IM A LOSER!!! I had to deal with my classmates.. will note some notable events today: mary was rolling on the floor again, she didn't shut up. so much complaining. she went on a rant about smut books, turns out she likes it ends with us so I know not only is she a porn addict that only reads smut but she has bad taste too... mlb dark romance and collen hoover.. most annoying prepubescent (and self centered) boy in my class has a crush on this sweet quiet girl and he's being not only PAINFULLY obvious but he's being super strange around her and she's just so obviously unconfutable, in response Marys barinrotted self started talking about the good girl x bad boy trope and with the most millennial face (for lack of a better word) she puts her hand to her face and says "that could either really good or really badly" IN THE MOST CRINGE AS MILLENNIAL VOICE TONE DILLVERY I DONT EVEN KNOW. she just ALWAYS finds a way to piss me off like it's a talent. she just has catastrophic levels of pretentiousness. not even prepubescent boy is this infuriating cause at least some what grounded. mary is so far up her own ass, she's gone through her entire intestinal track and back up her neck. Well fair enough, though I'd say the movie is more ambiguous then just straight up demonizing Homura.

There is a strong suggestion that a lot of Homu's creepy behavior is just an act given the strong allusions to ballet, specifically The Nutcracker, with the Clara Dolls throwing tomatoes at her at the end of her confrontation with Sayaka, which might suggest her performance as the over-the-top evil yandere devil being shity. It helps that she seems to prefer Poking the Poodle over Kicking the Dog and her final conversation with Madoka quite clearly paints her in a more or less sympathetic light. Plus earlier in the movie she had an entire rant about feeling terrible about how many hearts she's trampled on.

Homura's been compared to Anakin Skywalker before, but their final confrontation with their love interests strongly contrast with each other.

Urobutchi:

Initially, I was planning to end this story when Homura is reunited with Madoka. There would be the classic magical girl scenes in the beginning, and then the narrative in which the secret of the town would be revealed; that would drive the beginning and middle parts, and in the end there'd be the final showdown with Kyubey.

But I had a hard time deciding on the ending. Ending the story with Homura and Madoka being reunited wasn't really the best outcome. After all, the instant Homura encounters her, she'll be guided by the Law of Cycles, and disappear. Would that make her happy? It was also the director, Mr. Shinbo's opinion that the outcome of the TV series, "a human becoming a god" might be too heavy a fate for a girl in middle school to bear. Since that was the case, I decided to try to come up with a way to create a story in which Madoka could escape that outcome.

But I'd already ended this story once, so it was hard to figure out how to expand it. That was when Mr. Shinbo suggested, "How about a story with Homura confronting Madoka as an enemy?" I thought, if that's at all permissible, then I'd suddenly have all these options open to me, and that's how the current plot developed.

Now that I look back on it, I think it might have pushed the boundaries of the viewers' sense of morality. I'm sure there are people who view that as a "bad end," and there are probably also people who are more forgiving. I think it's an outcome that straddles that borderline. But people watch because they want to ponder whether the outcome is good or bad, so if they knew from the start that it was either a "happy end" or a "bad end", then there'd be no point in watching it in the first place. And if it's clearly a "bad end", then worse and worse things would occur, and if ten people saw it, all ten of them would be holding their heads in their hands. This film left enough room for interpretation, so it wasn't a "bad end". In that sense, I think it was the kind of film that allowed people to accept whichever outcome they liked — "happy" or "bad".

Thanks for this interesting piece from Urobutchi. It’s very good. Ultimately I do not trust the series to go on in this story, but I do hope it has a happy ending and doesn’t reduce Homura to a psycho lesbian stereotype

1): His pointthat the Earth is dying by the end of the anime and the end of Rebellionbecause entropy is happening is not correct, what the Incubators meanwith “Entropy” is what science calls “The Heat Death of the Universe”(Or the Big Freeze”) it’s somewhat complex but the short version is, an energyknown as “Dark Energy” Will eventually push the universe away as itexpands further into the void (Remember it began with an explosion, naturallyit expands) and it will expand so much to the point that the way we know theuniverse know will no longer be sustainable, as all the stars will eventuallydie and become dwarves and they will be so far apart from each other that youwouldn’t even be able to see it, eventually they will die and all that willremain in the universe will be Black Holes that will evaporate due to ProtonDecay (As Protons eventually Die too as well) until they are all gone, leavingthe universe as an empty, cold lifeless, lightless void….THAT is what theIncubators are trying to prevent.

By the pointall of this kicks in, there would not be a fucking solar system anymore becausethe sun would have died long ago, we’re talking about BILLIONS Of years intothe future, for this guy to claim that what we see in Rebellion is “Thebeginning of Entropy” that would mean the girls would be proton dust by thatpoint, just because that setting they are looks destroyed, it doesn’t mean therest of the Earth is! Come on…and also, it’s not like SHAFT is known for beingcreative with the backgrounds to create atmosphere right? It’s not likeRebellion is basically an experiment on background design right?

If you areinterested in knowing about the future of the universe, there is a GREAT video,it’s 30 minutes long but I promise you, it will enrich your life and even ifthe future looks bleak and depressing, it’s fascinating (And it fits withthemes of Madoka so it’s all good), I highly recommend it.

Well, yes probably. But how good would it be in the primary care unit, given that commission payments for referrals are probably rife there, anyway?

We had a conference in Latam last week. What was fascinating was that almost all the private sector in Brazil is working on a fee for service basis. So you get rewarded for keeping a fit young boy with a broken arm in intensive care for two days.

I think it is safe to say that fraud and wastage is colossal. Up until very recently the insurers have not taken any action at all, because if the case goes to a court of law, the judge in Brazil always sides with the doctor.

This is a general problem in all emerging markets in the private sector and I think wastage levels run at over 30pc or more. Chinese public sector hospitals get half their revenue from drug sales....

This was recently outlawed by the state but given that it has not fixed the underlying problem, it is simply going to continue.

This is the world's most corrupt industry. And the medical profession should take a lot of the blame!

Don’t follow the logic Max. If a system is designed with the wrong (perverse) incentives and one group takes advantage of those, why should they take (a lot) of the blame. Surely the clowns that design the system might be a more appropriate target.

Well, the problem with the medical profession is that it has a lot of power and wants to have its cake and eat it. It is often the group with the most influence over much of the system. So Indian doctors medical councils have for years been attempting to stop the training of more specialists because this would lead to lower pay. They have managed to achieve this which has led to many deaths. This scenario is played out in many countries. German radiologists got a law passed which means that a medical image taken in Germany can not be interpreted outside Germany. Which is obviously bilge. Usually the defence is that they are acting in the interests of patient safety.

The problem is that the general public and policymakers generally perceive doctors as objective and disinterested experts on medical systems. This view is amplified by clever pharma and medtech companies to attain their ends. BUT DOCTORS ARE NOTHING OF THE KIND!

Hi Max,

To comment on your earlier question on pharmacy chains and primary care, the US have been experimenting with this for a while now. Chains such as the CVS opened MinuteClinics where they employ usually nurse practitioners or physician assistants to provide primary care. The justification is the shortage of primary care providers but of course the point about messy incentives are relevant here too. I went there twice during the holidays and the provider actively sold me over-the-counter medications. This created a lot of debate when it was first proposed but now it seems to continue without much hassle. See here for a story in Huffpost.

Hey, business is business. But I really think some restraint is called for in the attacks of fee-for-service as inherently creating corruption. I don't know what happens in Brazil, but I don't think there ever was a time in the U.S. where a simple broken arm would lead to two days in intensive care.

Professionalism doesn't work anywhere near as well as the physicians claim. Physicians are economic actors. But they also are no more awful and immoral than much of anyone else; most people have notions of proper behavior and try to live by them; and the story on docs behaving in exploitative manners is way more complicated than simple homus economicus stories would tell.
