7 Expert Tips for Home Staging You Can Implement Yourself
Make quick and easy improvements to your home, whether your home is for sale or not.
When it comes to increasing the value and speed of the sale of your home, preparation, and presentation are often the keys. Interiors are the most crucial selling aspect, even though curb appeal changes might be helpful.
Today, most home shoppers research online, making a property's web appeal just as significant as its curb appeal.
You want to draw in as many potential buyers as possible to your listing to sell your house quickly. High-quality, staged listing images and videos are a terrific approach to increasing the virtual appeal of your home, and making it stand out in today's crowded market is one of the real estate solutions.
Even if your house is currently in good condition, home staging doesn't have to be an expensive or time-consuming procedure. Declutter your home and remove any personal belongings that make it difficult for purchasers to picture themselves living there.
Check out these tried-and-true suggestions from professional real estate agents and interior designers if you're prepared to try them.
Insert mirrors
A mirror not only gives a room some elegance, but its mirrored surface also makes it appear larger, brighter, and less claustrophobic. Consider purchasing a massive mirror from your neighborhood home store if you need artwork. Your area will feel more carefully chosen and arranged as a result.
Change window coverings
Replace any outdated, heavy draperies with lighter, more modern alternatives. When windows are open, simple, practical window coverings help a room feel airy and look more oversized and more relaxed. To give the impression that the room is taller, choose floor-length drapes and hang them close to the ceiling rather than at the top of the window frame.
Get white, fluffy towels.
Consider using monochrome colors to stage your bathroom. According to Marc Thee of Marc-Michaels Interiors, use only all-white towels in your bathrooms. Colored towels don't give off a spa-like vibe, and they might make a room appear gloomy and heavy. White towels have a clean, fresh feeling.
Improved rugs
Purchase rugs that will complement your furnishings and rooms. Avoid a too-small carpet for your living room; ensure that at least the front legs of your couch or chairs touch it. The proper-sized rug in the right style will give the room a more significant, "pulled-together" appearance.
Sort out the bookcases.
Give your shelves some beauty while you're organizing things. Rearrange the remaining books so that some are stacked horizontally, and some are vertically by completely removing 25% of them. Put a few objects within the bookcase as accent pieces and bookends. This will brighten your bookcases and give the space more charm and character.
Deep cleaning
Nobody wants to enter a house with a filthy toilet or scarred walls (and possibly not you!). Spend time cleaning each room in your home, but be mindful of cleaning odors.
Avoid filling houses with too many scents. They'll believe you're concealing something. Instead, make a batch of chocolate chip cookies, and keep it out on the counter for potential customers. This home staging tip will benefit your family even if you aren't selling your home.
De-Personalize
Although we know you took great pains to make your house a home, not all buyers will share your preferences when you try to sell it. Remove everyone's junk and personal photos. You want the prospective buyer to be able to picture living there.
Feel free to express your taste if you are selling your house later.

James Charles Evers (September 11, 1922 - July 22, 2020) was a civil rights activist and former politician. He was known for his role in the civil rights movement along with his younger brother Medgar Evers. He was made the NAACP State Voter Registration Chairman in 1954. He took over his position as field director of the NAACP in Mississippi. He organized and led many demonstrations for the rights of African Americans.
He was named “Man of the Year” by the NAACP. On June 3, 1969, he was elected in Fayette, Mississippi as the first African American mayor of a biracial town in the state in the post-Reconstruction era, following the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
He was born in Decatur, MS to James Evers, a laborer, and Jesse Wright Evers, a maid. He was the eldest of four children. He graduated from Alcorn State University.
During WWII, he and Medgar Evers both served in the Army. He fell in love with a Philippine woman while stationed overseas. He could not marry her and bring her home because the state’s constitution prohibited interracial marriages. After serving a year of reserve duty following the Korean War, he settled in Philadelphia, Mississippi. He began working as a disc jockey at WHOC, making him the first African American disc jockey in the state. He managed a hotel, cab company, and burial insurance business in the town. He moved to Chicago. He began working as a meatpacker in stockyards during the day and as an attendant for the men’s restroom at night. He began pimping and ran a numbers game. He gained enough money to purchase several bars, bootlegged liquor, and sold jukeboxes.
At the time of his election as mayor, the white officers of the Fayette city police “resigned rather than work under a Black administration”, according to the Associated Press. He then outlawed the carrying of firearms within city limits. He was married to Christine Evers until their marriage ended in annulment. He married Nannie L. Magee (1951-74) with whom he had four daughters. He lived in Brandon and served as station manager of WMPR 90.1 FM in Jackson. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

An Arizona mom has pleaded guilty to poisoning her US Air Force husband after he caught her pouring bleach into his coffee maker on cameras he hid throughout their home.
Melody Felicano Johnson pleaded guilty to two counts of poisoning food or drink for dumping the deadly chemical into the coffee machine before Roby Johnson had his morning cup of joe on July 11 and July 18, 13 News reported.
Melody pleaded guilty to the lesser crimes and the attempted murder charge she initially faced was dismissed in return, according to the local news station.
The poisonings occurred while the couple was undergoing divorce proceedings but were still living together at the airman’s duty station in Germany and in Arizona.
Roby noticed his coffee began tasting strange while they were stationed in Germany in March and suspected his wife, the mother of his children, had been trying to poison him.
“He stated she knew that he would prep his coffee pot to be ready at night so that in the morning he just needed to turn it on to make his coffee,” court documents show. “At that time he stopped drinking the coffee but continued to pretend to drink.”
Once back in Arizona, Roby set up hidden cameras in their home to try to catch his estranged wife in the act.
On July 16, Melody was filmed pouring liquid from a large bottle of bleach into a smaller container in the family’s laundry room.
Moments later, she was caught on another hidden camera walking into the kitchen and pouring the contents of the smaller container into the water basin of the coffee maker.
Roby also filmed himself testing the water from the coffee maker in an effort to collect more evidence to provide to police.
“You can smell it from here. You can smell it,” he announced in one clip.
“Look at that,” he said, pulling the positive, color-changing test out from the coffee maker. “Totally changed.”
In complete disbelief, Roby repeatedly said, “Wow,” and showed the bubbles inside the water holder of the coffee maker before ending the video.
He shared the videos with the Tucson Police Department, which detained Melody on July 18.
The airman believes his wife was trying to kill him to collect his life insurance benefits, according to court documents.
Melody was deemed a flight risk since she has family and property in the Philippines and has remained in custody since her arrest.
She will be sentenced on May 10. She faces up to two years in prison but could be released for time served as the minimum sentence is four months, according to 13 News.

A Whole New Chapter
In past blogs I’ve written every week or two. Here I am nearly 3 months into this current adventure and I finally sit down to write. I was really planning to give this up but I’ve endured a fair amount of grief from some of my readers, and with a hopefully blog-worthy event coming up (road trip!) Georgia has encouraged me to get back with the program.
Lots of catching up to do! But before I even get to the Philippines, I’ll take you back all the way to our previous trip. One day, as I was paying the bills necessary to maintain a home in the mountains of California, I thought about the monthly costs for electricity, propane, water, sewer, home & auto insurance, property taxes, etc. and wondered why we were paying so dearly for a home we only used half the time, and planned to use even less in the future. Georgia and I thought about it and talked and decided to downsize and relocate our base in the US, and spend most of our time over here – maybe 9-10 months a year.
And between May 2023 and our return here in March, that’s just what we did. We first found a small home on a ¾ acre lot, still under construction, in Fernley, Nevada. This promised much lower expenses than Graeagle, plus Nevada has no state income tax. As one example, our homeowner’s insurance is $328 per year, while we paid more than that every month for the house in Graeagle. Everything else has scaled accordingly, and though we’re not particularly in love with Fernley, it gives us what we need when we’re there, and we feel safe just locking up the house and leaving for 5-6 months at a time.
The new US Headquarters in Fernley
The house in Graeagle was put on the market in September, and in one day we had a buyer, with cash, and the deal was done! We stayed in the house until after Georgia’s son Matt was married (in Graeagle) then began the move to Fernley. By November 15 we were Nevada residents.
Max
Although Max was well taken care of while we were gone, by Georgia’s sister Dignah, we were the ones who suffered, missing him terribly. We decided to bring him with us, and leave him here during our short return trips to the US. Our caretakers love dogs so it should work out well.
I asked my nephew, who flies for a major airline, about the best way to fly a dog overseas. “Easy” he said, “he just needs to get registered as a medical service dog then he gets to fly in the cabin, for free.” Lucky for us, he’d done that for one of his own dogs and knew the ropes. Soon enough, Max was a “trained and certified” service dog, able to alert to Georgia’s condition. And no, ADA laws do not allow you to ask what that condition is.
Doesn't he look handsome on his ID card?
That was indeed the easy part, and only guaranteed Max a comfy seat on the plane. The path started with Max’s vet, who researched the health and vaccination requirements both for import to the Philippines and export from the US. Max got to know his vet well over the next few months but, as attested to by the lengthy USDA export form, he was perfectly healthy. A complete medical and vaccination history was provided to the Philippines Bureau of Animal Imports to receive an import clearance, and various US DOT forms had to be completed.
Thus armed with a large stack of paperwork, and a suitcase full of Wubbas and Chuckit balls, we set off for our flights from Reno to SFO, then SFO to Manila. The gate agent in Reno didn’t want to see any of the papers; she told us that it would be handled at SFO before the international flight. Nope, at SFO we just walked onto the plane and settled into our business class seats. Max had it pretty good for sure!
Surely we’ll have to provide paperwork to get Max through the airport in Manila, right? Well, again, no. Through Immigration, baggage claim, and Customs, Max just trotted along beside us. The whole trip and not once were we asked to provide any documentation. Welcome to the Philippines, Max!
The most amazing thing though, was Max’s bladder control. He used an animal relief area outside the Reno terminal before our first flight, wouldn’t go near the stinky in-terminal relief station in SFO, held it through both flights, then through the terminal in Manila, finally taking a potty break outside the terminal. Super-human!
Kawayan Cove
It was nice to get back to our home, after being back in the states for a very busy 10 months. Nice especially as the caretakers had done a good job maintaining both home and gardens. Ready to move in and relax!
After greeting everyone and making some instant friends, Max spotted the swimming pool. It was a hot day (and he soon found out that every day is hot here!) and in he went. A quick lesson on where the steps were so he can get in & out and now swimming is a daily activity. Usually when one of us is there to throw the Chuckit ball, but we’ve seen him go down by himself and sit on the bench with water up to his chest, just cooling off.
Mabini
Last trip, I wrote about our visit to nearby Mabini/Anilao, a famous dive spot in the Philippines. We noted that the second hotel we stayed in was dog-friendly so for Georgia’s birthday this year we decided to go back, taking Max this time. We all enjoyed relaxing, swimming (both pool and beach for Max), getting massages (sorry, not you, Max), and of course the bar and restaurant. We went diving one day and I got in a couple enjoyable dives, spotting lots of fish, octopus, nice corals and crinoids, turtles, and a number of colorful nudies (nudibranchs).
Where's Dad?
New Car
I had a plan for this trip to replace our Innova with a Toyota Fortuner SUV (a model not available in the US but similar to the Toyota Highlander). More luxurious, better ride and handling, but still retaining a lot of utility for hauling people and stuff around. Georgia had a better idea (as she's prone to have), to get a really small car mainly for use in and around town, something that will be easier to drive and park in the crowded markets.
We originally settled on a Toyota Wigo (again, no equivalent in the US), a very compact “city car” with a mighty 1.0L engine. Buying a new car here isn’t like in the US, where you practically have to shake salespeople off your legs. Even a test drive isn’t standard here; we actually had to go to 3 dealerships to get one. OK, one dealer did let us drive a Wigo, but only around the dealership parking lot! In the 3rd dealership though, we noticed a little bit larger mini-SUV called the Raize. About the same height and width as the Wigo, but somewhat longer and with lots more room inside. Comparison drives between the Wigo and Raize convinced us that the Raize’s even mightier 1.2L engine was worthwhile, plus it was more comfortable overall. A deal was struck and we’re now enjoying our new mini-SUV!
Georgia’s mom is also wanting a car for the Philippines, and it turns out that our Innova is exactly what she’s looking for. We’ve made a deal to sell it to her, so now we’re looking for its replacement. I may get my Fortuner after all!
Driver’s Licenses
Regarding the story above, I got to test drive the cars; Georgia didn’t. The salesperson noted that her license had expired the day before, which was her actual birthday. Mine didn't expire until July so I was good to go.
We’d been clued in to the existence of a Land Transportation Office (LTO) branch in a nearby shopping center that only handles driver’s license renewals, which was said to be very efficient compared to dealing with the full-service LTO. The requirements for renewal are basically passing a medical exam and a written test. We went to the medical office, conveniently next door to the LTO, for our exams. After filling out a short medical history, my exam consisted of getting weighed, height measured, and reading one line of inch-high letters on an eye chart. Every other result of the required “exam” was just filled in by the staff. And then, as I was waiting for my exam results to be registered, I was handed a certificate stating that I’d passed the written test with a score of 92%. VERY efficient indeed, considering that I’d never seen a test. I do wonder what questions I got wrong though…
In less than an hour overall, we both walked out with 10-year renewals on of driver’s licenses. I’ll be almost 80 when this one expires, hope I’m around to get it renewed!
And BTW, I’m mad because Georgia outscored me on the written test, getting a 96!
Billiards
Billiards is a popular activity in the Philippines, probably because it’s played indoors in air-conditioned rooms. I’ve played occasionally here with Herve, who has a table, but this year we’ve hooked up with Kawayan Cove neighbors Graham (of English garden fame) and Andy (a New Yorker who lives mostly in Singapore). Also in our group, from neighboring developments, are Jean (Belgian), and Robert (Canadian). We call our informal group the “Sandy Balls Billiards Club” and we play a “tournament” every weekend, each putting 100 Pesos (about $1.75) into a winner-take-all prize pool. I’ve won once, hoping to continue to improve my game.
L-R: Robert, Jean, Graham, me, Herve (Andy not pictured)
Road Trip!
We’ve been talking about a road trip to the far northern reaches of Luzon for some time; we finally decided to do it. And just like our road trip to Baguio and Sagada in 2018, we’re not driving or taking our car, rather hiring both. Reminds me of an old commercial…
Car rental = $40/day
Driver = $20/day
Food and Lodging for Driver = $10/day
Sitting in the back and enjoying the ride = Priceless!
Our itinerary will include La Union, Vigan, Pagudpud, Santa Teresita, Tuguegarao, and Baguio. Stay tuned!
Sunset(s)
We’re still enjoying our sunsets, nearly every evening. Since it’s been almost 3 months I’ll throw in some bonus photos!
From our home:
From Mabini:
All for now, take care everyone!

Would you rather have another job? I would, but the job market sucks and it's been a challenge trying to apply to new ones even though I had been actively looking every day of February. I got a little impatient so I've ultimately settled for a new role, still in my current workplace – so I've still resigned from my current post, but the new role will allow me to continue to be in the industry I like while removing the shit I don't want to deal with and had originally resigned over.
Did you ever live in a house with more than one story? I currently do. It was the house I grew up in that didn't have an extra floor.
What room of your home do you spend most time in? My bedroom, since it's also my workspace.
Is your second toe longer than your big toe? Just super slightly, but yeah.
Have you ever given yourself a tattoo? Nope.
Do you own any clothes you wouldn’t wear in front of your mother? Not really.
Do you have health insurance? Just Philhealth. What are some medical issues you’re currently dealing with? Just what I'm presently sensing as anemia, but other than that there aren't any.
Why did you last take pain medication? Can't even recall. I just apply a cooling ointment whenever my back and shoulders are sore lol, and I've been proactively lessening my Biogesic intake because I don't want to be too dependent on it every time I get a headache.
What physical traits have you inherited from your father? I find that my smile and mouth are similar to his. I think my eyes too? Idk but in general I'm the most well-balanced among me and my siblings when it comes to genetics haha, so it's hard for me to tell which of my features look more like my mom's or my dad's.
How about your mother? My overall face structure? IDK IT'S REALLY HARD TO TELL LOL
What personality traits do you wish your children would inherit from you? I take pride in how devoted and loyal I am in my friendships, so it'd be nice for my hypothetical and likely-to-never-exist kids to get that from me. Also, passion for their hobbies! I'd listen to my kids ramble on all day about whatever it is they're interested/invested in.
What parts of the world are your ancestors from? Philippines, and that's pretty much it lol. I don't think I have ancestors from Spain.
Have you ever had a strange pet, outside of the normal animals people keep? No.
Do you believe in astrology? Hell no.
Do you drive an electric car? No. It just wouldn't be the smartest decision to get one at this point as we barely have the technology or network to make owning an electric car a feasible long-term thing. Philippines was already late as it is when it came to the internet, so I imagine it would be the same - perhaps even longer - with the electric cars.
Do you like facial hair on guys or do you prefer the clean shaven look? Eh, it depends on how they look with the hair.
Who was your first celebrity crush? It was a tie between Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale, haha.
Are you good with kids? I honestly don't know. I was good with kids before as a First-Born Asian Daughter™ lol, but I haven't been arounds kids in YEARS so idk if my abilities still hold up.
Are you usually late, early, or right on time? At this point tbh I'm a mix of all three. I try to make it on time but it sometimes also depends on how invested I am in the thing I'm supposed to be at. I arrived at the Seventeen concert by 11 AM, but at work I will sometimes arrive at 10:30 AM lol.
Are you good at applying makeup? I'm horrible at it, but that's also because I'm not the least bit interested in makeup.
Do you like pastel colored hair? It's alright!
What do you think about the most? Career options, opportunities to take care of myself or find new hobbies...I've been getting paranoid about mortality lately as well and I hate it.
Do you like to see it snowing outside? I wish I could experience that, but I don't live in a country with snow.
Do you have your national flag hanging up anywhere outside your house? Nopes.
Have you ever been in a choir? I have not.
Do you look older or younger than you actually are? I used to get 'younger' all the time, but idk now. Work may have aged me physically enough to start actually looking 25 hahaha.
When is the next time you’ll be up on stage? I'm assuming June because my mom has asked me to host a surprise party we're doing for my paternal grandparents. I never committed to it, but I know ultimately it'll come down to me hosting anyway lol.
Where did you spend your last birthday at? I was just at home. My friends came over though.
What was the last show that you watched a full episode of? Friends.
Is there anything you need to work on doing soon? Little bit, yeah.
Were you ever a boy or girl scout? I was not.
Do you take your medications in the morning or at night? I don't take any medication at all.
Have you ever bought a YouTuber’s merch? Nah, merch is usually next to impossible to get when you're from an Asian country that's not Japan anyway. The merchiest I got with YouTubers was going to the first-ever YouTube Fanfest haha.
What is the best type of donut? I like a good classic – chocolate frosting with sprinkles! My favorite local doughnut shop also makes this fantastic roasted brown butter brioche doughnut that I could have every day.
Do you like thrift stores? Not the first place I would go to, but still willing to check them out.
What is your town known for? Aesthetic cafes with shitty food, car accidents, pilgrimages, and our waterfalls. We're all over the place lmao.
Have you ever used a fake name at Starbucks? I once referred to myself as Audrey as in Audrey Hepburn but it came back as fucking Aujie hahahaha. Haven't really done it since because I don't see the point.
What color is your lava lamp? I've never had one.
Who is your favorite Lisa Frank character? We were too short on money for my parents to be spending overpriced Lisa Frank shit on me.
What’s your favorite movie that you remember seeing in the theater? Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
Do you know anyone who has ten cats? I think Val may have? She posts about her cats all the time and it's always different ones every time lol.
Have you ever had a cat? My sister had Arlee.
Have you ever had a dog? Yes, three of them.
Have you ever any other kind of animal? Yes.
Have you ever had a pet rock? That I never have.
What were you voted in the senior class polls? We don't have that tradition.
Who was your favorite teacher in high school? My music teacher. I never even liked what she taught, but she had a teaching style that let her relate life lessons to whatever music theory she was explaining at the moment and that resonated with me all throughout high school.
Do you want to give your kids common names or unique names? Common, but not too mainstream in that they can still stand out but also not get bullied.
What collection are you thinking of starting? I currently collect BTS merch and I plan on continuing it, especially since I'm not even done getting all the albums yet.
Do you organize your clothes by color? No, I just have them fixed according to article of clothing.
What do you want to name your first child? I've stopped having a go-to pick for a name because I've also stopped wanting kids.
List ten favorite girls names. Mia, Scarlett, Charlotte, Emilia, Harper, Elliott, Lily, Juliana, Rosie, Dylan.
List ten favorite boys names. Seth, Liam, James, Lucas, Julian, Matteo, Noah, Owen, Jacob, Leon.
What season do you want to get married in? Continued from last night. We don't have seasons but I'd pick out a colder month – so anywhere between December to February.
Is your Pinterest cluttered? I don't use Pinterest enough to make boards.
What is your favorite insect? None of them.
What bugs scare you? All of them, but especially cockroaches.
Who picked your name, your mom or your dad? My dad picked my first name, my mom chose my second.
Have you ever fallen asleep in a significant other’s arms? Sure.
Do you have a television in your room? If you do, is it one of the old school big ones? Or i it a new flat screen? I do. It's a flat-screen but it's not a new TV – it was originally from our living room until we got a new one last year. Anyway, the TV I have is like 16 years old.
What was your favorite cartoon or television show as a child? What about movie? I liked Spongebob and Drake & Josh. For movies, Toy Story was and continues to be my favorite.
Did you have sleepovers at your friends’ houses a lot as a child? Or did your friends come over to your house more often? No. I was never really allowed to, but also I didn't have many friends so eh. As for me, I lived in a very crowded duplex so the house was never the most visitor-friendly.
Do you have any significantly older siblings? No, our age gaps are small.
When opening presents on Christmas or birthdays, do you first try to guess what is in the package? Do you tear the wrap off slowly, or just rip it to shreds? Are you polite no matter what the gift, and say you love it anyways? I rip it to shreds haha, and yes I always say thank you.
What happened last time you got drunk? I dropped a wine glass and injured my foot.
What are you listening to? Friends.
Which parent do you feel the most affection for? My dad.
How do you feel about God? "If there is a God, He will have to beg for my forgiveness.” A quote that reached fame by being found carved in a concentration camp wall. And I will forever agree with it, violently so. <– I like this answer. < There you go. <--- yep. < That's the best answer yet, because that's exactly how I feel with the shit I went through growing up.
Which platform do you use to listen to music on the most? Spotify.
Who do you care about the most? Myself and my dogs.

[ad_1] Corporate India is expected to offer a salary hike of 9.5 per cent in 2025 (Photo: Shutterstock)3 min read Last Updated : Oct 15 2024 | 1:37 PM IST Corporate India is expected to offer a salary hike of 9.5 per cent in 2025, similar to the 2024 actual salary increase, as companies are balancing optimism with caution, a report said on Tuesday. According to WTW's latest Salary Budget Planning Report, the median salary increase in India is forecasted to rise by 9.5 per cent in 2025, similar to the 2024 actual salary increase of 9.5 per cent. Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp Salary increases in India continue to be the highest across the region. Markets such as Vietnam (7.6 per cent), Indonesia (6.5 per cent), the Philippines (5.6 per cent), China (5 per cent) and Thailand (5 per cent) are also projected to maintain a strong salary increase for next year. The Salary Budget Planning Report is compiled by WTW's Rewards Data Intelligence practice. The survey was conducted in April and June 2024. Approximately 32,000 responses were received from companies across 168 countries worldwide. The survey had 709 participants from India. "While companies in India are optimistic about growth, they are balancing optimism with caution. The era of 'Great resignation' is behind us, both employers and employees are now seeking stability and the market sentiment is notably steadier," Rajul Mathur, Consulting Leader, Work and Rewards, WTW India said. In 2025, salary increases across industries such as the Pharmaceuticals (10 per cent), Manufacturing (9.9 per cent), Insurance (9.7 per cent), Captives and SSO sectors (9.7 per cent) and Retail (9.6 per cent) are likely to be above the general industry salary median, whereas software and Business Services at 9 per cent are projected below the general industry median of 9.5 per cent. "India's captive sector is thriving, with a forecasted jump from around 1,500 captives in 2023 to 2,000 by 2025. As the home to nearly half of the world's global capability centres, the country's rich pool of skilled talent is driving innovation and boosting projected salary increases, Mathur added. In 2025, variable payouts are projected to remain consistent at 12.5 per cent, following 2024's 12.6 per cent. As organisations prioritise performance, they are assigning larger portions of their variable pay budgets to top and above-average performers, ensuring talent is recognised and suitably rewarded. "Organisations are placing a stronger emphasis on performance-based pay differentiation. This trend sees top performers potentially earning salary increments three times that of average performers, while above-average performers are expected to receive about 1.2 times the increment of an average performer," Mathur said. In terms of hiring, almost 28 per cent of companies plan to add headcount in the next 12 months, while 68 per cent companies plan to maintain their headcount in 2025 as compared to the previous year. With higher growth rates anticipated, India's voluntary attrition rate continues to be one of the highest in the region. However, it is observed that the voluntary attrition rates in India have reduced slightly from 11 per cent in 2023 to 10.8 per cent in 2024. In addition, around 46 per cent of companies in India expect that their salary increase budgets for 2025 will be similar to 2024, while 28 per cent said that the budgets are likely to be lower than projected. Concerns related to cost management, inflationary pressures, anticipated recession and a tighter labour market are the major factors influencing budget projections for 2025, the report said. Filipino Media OFWs in Bangkok: Blockchain, Health, & the Path to Economic Reintegration
The sun beats down on Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok’s bustling artery, as Maria scrolls through her phone, checking the latest cryptocurrency prices. A former television producer from Manila, Maria is one of the thousands of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Thailand, navigating a life far from home, grappling with unique challenges, and exploring new avenues for financial security. Her story, like that of many media professionals working abroad, highlights the complex interplay of ambition, sacrifice, and the constant search for better opportunities.
The narrative of the OFW is deeply ingrained in the Filipino psyche. Generations have sought employment overseas, contributing significantly to the Philippine economy through remittances. While the typical image of an OFW might be a domestic worker or a construction worker, a growing segment comprises skilled professionals, including those in the media industry. Drawn by the promise of higher salaries and international experience, these individuals often leave behind established careers and families to carve a new path in foreign lands.
Bangkok, a vibrant hub of Southeast Asia, has become a popular destination for Filipino media professionals. The city’s burgeoning media landscape offers opportunities in journalism, broadcasting, advertising, and public relations. Yet, the allure of international experience often comes with its own set of challenges. Long working hours, cultural adjustments, and the constant pressure to perform can take a toll on physical and mental well-being.
Maria’s experience echoes this reality. The demanding nature of her job as a video editor for a Thai production company often requires her to work late nights and weekends. The pressure to adapt to a new work environment, coupled with the emotional strain of being away from her family, has led to sleep deprivation and anxiety. “It’s a constant juggling act,” she admits, “trying to balance work, personal life, and staying connected with loved ones back home.”
Physical health challenges are a significant concern for OFWs, particularly those in demanding professions like media. The long hours, sedentary lifestyle, and often unhealthy food options can contribute to various health problems, including obesity, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Access to quality healthcare can also be a barrier, especially for those in lower-paying jobs or without comprehensive health insurance. Maria, for example, has been experiencing persistent back pain due to long hours spent in front of a computer. Finding affordable and accessible healthcare in a foreign country has proven to be an added layer of complexity.
In recent years, a new dimension has been added to the OFW narrative: the exploration of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. The decentralized nature and potential for high returns have attracted many OFWs, who see these technologies as a means to achieve financial independence and secure their future. Maria, like many of her colleagues, started researching cryptocurrencies in 2020, drawn by the stories of significant gains and the possibility of creating a safety net for herself and her family.
The timing of this exploration is significant. The COVID-19 pandemic, which began around the same time, significantly impacted the global economy and highlighted the vulnerabilities of traditional financial systems. Many OFWs faced job losses and reduced income, prompting them to seek alternative avenues for financial security. The pandemic also accelerated the adoption of digital technologies, making it easier for individuals to access information and engage with online platforms related to cryptocurrencies and blockchain.
While the potential of these technologies is undeniable, it's crucial to acknowledge the risks involved. The volatility of cryptocurrency markets, the potential for scams, and the lack of regulatory frameworks in many countries necessitate caution and thorough research. For OFWs, who often have limited financial resources and may be less familiar with these technologies, it is essential to approach this space with informed decision-making and a clear understanding of the potential downsides.
The eventual return home is a constant thought for most OFWs. The dream of reuniting with family and building a stable life in the Philippines is a powerful motivator. However, the economic reintegration of returning OFWs presents a unique set of challenges. Finding suitable employment opportunities that match their skills and experience acquired abroad is often difficult. The disparity between salaries offered in the Philippines and those earned overseas can be a significant deterrent, forcing many returning OFWs to accept lower-paying jobs or face unemployment.
This is where resources like OFWJobs.org (www.ofwjobs.org) play a vital role. Platforms like these provide a bridge between returning OFWs and potential employers in the Philippines. By connecting skilled professionals with relevant job opportunities, they facilitate a smoother transition back into the local workforce and contribute to the overall economic development of the country. The site offers a range of resources, including job listings, career advice, and information on government programs designed to support returning OFWs.
The government also has a crucial role to play in supporting the economic reintegration of returning OFWs. Investing in skills development programs, providing access to affordable financing for entrepreneurship, and creating a conducive business environment can empower returning OFWs to leverage their international experience and contribute to the growth of the Philippine economy. Furthermore, strengthening regulatory frameworks for emerging technologies like blockchain and cryptocurrency can create new opportunities for OFWs and foster innovation within the country.
Maria’s story is just one example of the multifaceted experiences of OFWs, particularly those in the media industry. Their journey is marked by sacrifice, resilience, and a constant pursuit of better opportunities. While the challenges are real and often significant, the unwavering spirit of the OFW, coupled with supportive resources and proactive government policies, can pave the way for successful economic reintegration and a brighter future back home. As technology continues to evolve and the global landscape shifts, the narrative of the OFW will undoubtedly continue to evolve, reflecting the changing dynamics of work, migration, and the pursuit of a better life. The exploration of new technologies, like blockchain and cryptocurrency, may become an increasingly important part of this evolving narrative, offering new avenues for financial security and empowerment.
