Transcription of Misha's answer from That Part of his and Jensen's panel because once again, I am unwell
Misha Collins: Uh… I would say that Jensen professionally, as an actor, is able to turn in a passible performance [crowd laughs] consistently. [crowd laughs again] Uh I’ll- I’ll… I will spare you all me telling you that Jensen is an excellent actor and that I think he’ll probably wind up being–”
Jensen Ackles: “It’s okay they can hear it.”
Misha: “--No, they don’t wanna hear it– that he’ll probably wind up an A-list movie star at some point.
[Crowd cheers]
Misha: “I have told him that in private and I- I don’t want to make that a public statement because I saw even privately how big it made his head, [crowd laughs] and I don’t think that’s good for him. Uhm, but I will- I’ll- I’ll share something that is a little bit more insider baseball about Jensen professionally which is that he took control of the set, and established a tone of professionalism, and courtesy, and kindness to one another on the set that is very rare in our business for some reason.
Typically when people are given the keys to power in Hollywood on set they turn into- uh- self-serving primadonnas, and Jensen, you consistently set a tone of being respectful, and professional, and inclusive, and made guest stars as well as crew members feel welcome and relevant and heard, and… there’s a reason the- the president of our network every year would host a dinner in Vancouver and would bring the cast of Supernatural to dinner, and then bring casts of other new shows to the dinner as well, and basically told the new casts ‘Be like these guys.’ And I was a- I was late to the party. I was the new kid on the show, when I got there that tone had already been established and- and Jensen you for sure carried the torch of that tone, so, professionally that was um That- That- That probably for me is the thing that I would carry forward in my career the most, um, having learned from you. Uhm- [clears throat]”
[Applause]
Jensen: “I’m sweating. [...] Thank you”
Misha: “Um, and personally, like, literally no one I know gives a better hot oil massage.”
[Crowd laughs]
Jensen: “[Pointing at someone onstage clapping] He was my teacher.”

Today I want to talk about Cassandra Cain and the 'silent asian' trope.
From what I have read the silent Asian trope is seemingly a manifestation of the far older 'inscrutable Asian trope in Western culture and fiction. The inscrutable Asian trope positions Asian characters as the perpetual foreign other in comparison to a ''familiar' whiteness or Westernness. They are mercurial, mysterious, and 'exotic', hyper-competent and alluring but cold. Considering the white, Western gaze in which American media is created, these Asian characters are therefore constructed to be as distant and mysterious to the audience as they are to the characters. And it is in this way that Cass, even when she was (largely) silent challenges this trope.
I'm going to be analysing issue #2 of the Batgirl 2000 run. (it'll be a long post so I'm going to put this under a keep reading.
Cass is undoubtedly mysterious to the other (largely white) members of the Batfamily but through Batgirl 2000s the reader is made very aware of who she is. This is achieved through close narrative focus wherein the reader is more mostly supposed to be seeing the world from Cass’s perspective, not her from other peoples perspective.
This disparity between the inner world the audience is privy to and the external impression of her is made explicit in issue #2. We see explicitly that Babs finds Cass unknowable.
Tumblr media
Cass’s shrug is snarky and she is smiling and looks pretty pleased with herself. But Barbara cannot understand what she means, and condescendingly berates Cass for not learning language and therefore not being able to talk to her like a ‘normal person’. Here we have a blatant case of the inscrutable Asian trope, but we aren’t meant to be seeing this story through Babs’ eyes. We’re seeing it through Cass’s.
Damon Scott’s art style here emphasises dynamic and clear expression over looking pretty or normal. Thus allows the reader to see the world through Cass’s eyes where the important information is equally communicated through pose and facial expressions. What would be micro expressions becoming macro expressions through Cass’s eyes. See how Babs’ friendly smile contorts into an exaggerated frown one panel apart. See again the smug and satisfied look on Cass’ face that in universe a skilled detective cannot decipher.
the characters in this (of all genders) are allowed to be expressive even when it is not attractive. The close ups are centred around their faces and their bodies in a way meant to convey emotion and unspoken thought, not sex appeal. Like compare this depiction of Babs and Cass to how Oracle is drawn by Ed Benes in birds of prey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And unlike the inscrutable Asian Cass is allowed to be bold, opinionated, and snarky when silent. She’s allowed to have emotions so clear on her face that the reader can identify them beneath a full face mask. In a world where casting directors are still saying they don’t hire Asian actors because they ‘can’t emote enough’ drawing an Asian woman as one of the most expressive dc heroines is important.
In the rest of this Cass goes to find a missing man who she saved earlier in the issue. Oracle has located him in an abandoned derelict prison and Cass immediately throws herself into the situation. By the time she gets there however the man is already about to die. He’s been beaten too bad for anyone, even a Batgirl, to save him. And when he dies Cass stands there watching as the light leaves his eyes. She becomes brutal, although not murderous. And he when he dies he gives his wife the last letter he ever wrote. He asks this Batgirl to gave his final words to his wife.
Of course Cass does. And sees the tears drying in the widow’s eyes as the woman reads what he said (we don’t know what, Cass does not either). No other well meaning words or gestures can bring the relief and peace to that woman that his letter did. Seeing for the first time what the written word can mean to people Cass goes home to Oracle’s watchtowers and begins to try to learn to write.
Tumblr media
And there we are one again introduced to the external perspective that sees Cass as unknowable. Who cannot begin to imagine what about seeing a man die after failing to save him would encourage her write when she never was interested before.
But we know. To the audience she is not inscrutable but instead a traumatised yet perfectly understandable young women. We are walked through her motives. see the world filtered through her point of view. Even with her speaking two words throughout this issue it is hard to call her silent.

I saw a pic on Insta of Diana kissing Sam on the lips on stage! Do you know why they kissed and if C was present? I think it's disgusting and diana's husband very open minded. Hollywood, enterntainment industry is a very awkward and disgusting World. No wonder why most actors are f*cked up. They have to do things to make their boss happy 🤢
Dear Why They Kissed Anon,
Darling - are you new? If so, welcome. I can't believe you just discovered that supremely weird moment, when I lost any last bit of respect I had for 'Erself.
FWIW, in a nutshell: it was Gabaldon's idea and a totally spontaneous one at that, in a middle of a fan convention panel. Now try to imagine how S felt about this diminutive, rotund lady with a penchant for flip-flops and psychedelic nail polish, kissing him on the lips (and more? ugh, my brain froze!). Pretending afterwards that she self diagnosed as 'being on the spectrum' is a cynical, easy excuse for just about any other past or future eccentricity she might choose to show the world. As if we cared, seriously.
She has always maintained her towering husband was the main inspiration for Jamie's character and yet she kissed S on the lips in what is not only an aggressive breach of taste and social conventions, but also plain emotional abuse. Just to feed her Ego (yes, with a capital E), I suppose and to demonstrate she's got The Power. Disgusting, indeed.
When The Author herself mixes up the character and the actor portraying this character, calling people 'delusional' just because they supposedly did the same (fun fact: most didn't) is shameless.
No wonder C can't stand her. Could you?

Hello! ✨ 🤗 🤗 Thank you for making the request. I loved it. I cried and screamed with emotion 🥺 ✨ thank you, thank you, thank you so much. ✨
And well I had an idea 🙈 you could make an Evan Buckley petition with the song Skyfall by Adele.
Reader is an actress, an actress recognized by Hollywood. Who she is linked to different actors of the moment. Which makes Buck uncomfortable and nervous. Because he believes that their relationship could affect Reader's career. However, he is also afraid to see the harassment reader receives from the press and photographers. So one day, reader unhesitatingly takes him to an award ceremony for one of his films. They both pose for the cameras. Buck wraps her in his arms and doesn't let go of her hand at any moment. He only lets go when she receives the award and the camera points at them both.
And the next day they both learn that they received the name "Hollywood's most powerful couple".
Chim, Maddie and Eddie jokingly name Buck "Hollywood's boyfriend". (well it's just a thought) 🙈
😅 Again, thanks for agreeing to BTR's request. 🤭 🤗✨
skyfall - e.b

summary: request
evan buckley x reader
gif from @catdadeddie
buck sat in his apartment, watching his girlfriend on the tv and the trailer for her new film. if she couldn’t be here with him, he may as well just watch her. it’s not the same, it never would be but it would have to do. he missed her in his arms and just naturally being next to him without a choreographed move or line.
y/n knew buck was at home doing all of this. he’s the only thing on her mind at red carpets. instead, she was miles away at a panel for her movie. she loved her job. she amount of opportunities and gateways to success put her on top. every movie has piled up and showcased her talent, and she loves it.
every job has its downfalls, though. the complete lack of privacy is overwhelming and you can never underestimate the scrutiny of the media. all sections of her life were on display at all times. she only wanted to do what she loved on the movie sets, not have every move dictated by the press.
so, she decided that she and buck would remain low profile. there was no lie that she was in a relationship. y/n didn’t need to hide that she loves someone, but she’s horrified of fucked up people getting involved in bucks life. buck has identical fears. if he and y/n came out with their relationship, people could ruin his life because they’re angry. y/n’s seen with a-list actors every day that people would kill to see a relationship. some of it isn’t just for himself, it’s for her. he first-hand views the harassment and cruelty she gets. he reads it on social media and in the news, reporting every last drop of it. it surfaces a new insecurity in buck, feeling less than the rest because he’s just a regular man.
y/n knows he’s more than that, so that’s enough for him. she honors him more than anyone and his personality and work ethic is admired. it doesn’t matter how much money he makes or what he wants to do with his life because y/n wants every last moment with him.
when the biggest award ceremony of y/n’s career comes up, she thinks it’s the perfect opportunity to bring buck into the light. she wants to brag about him being hers, and show off all of his riveting qualities. she knows there’s not a part of him that doesn’t deserve to be in the spotlight.
she pulled up the the firehouse one time in full disguise. she ripped it all off before running into bucks arms as he lifted her off the ground. he missed her beautiful face that was across the country. his coworkers watched in entertainment as he just beamed whenever he looked at her.
“i missed you so much,” y/n smiles.
“i know, i’m just happy you’re home now,” buck says, keeping his hands placed on her forearms. it’s like the entire world disappeared behind them. every person, every noise, every sense just vanished when looking into the others breathtaking eyes.
“i, uh, need to ask you something,” y/n starts, giving buck a small amount of anxiety, but he knows they can deal with whatever it is together.
“yeah,” he says quickly. “of course, come in here.”
he leads her into a private room and shuts the door. buck moves back over to grab her hand, entwining their fingers together and giving her the support to continue. “what’s going on, baby?”
“the oscars are coming up,” she spits out quickly, and buck doesn’t know if he should be relieved or not. “and i want you to come with me. i know you might think it’s a bad idea, but i’m sick of hiding from everyone and they have nothing against you and me.”
buck laughs softly, continuing to graze her hand with his fingers. she looks up at him with an expression of anticipation and maybe even a little timidity. when she sees the smile creep up on his face, she can’t tell whether it’s an excited one or a mocking one.
“you know i would never miss that for the world, right?” he tells her and she releases a breath, dropping her shoulders and the corners of her mouth pull up. “i don’t care if you’re nominated and win or lose, i’ll be there.”
the days went painfully slow for the rest of bucks team as floods of questions and concerns came their way. he was stalled on what he should wear, what time he should get there, should he get his hair done now or sooner to the date. everyone was ready to put in earplugs at his questions, but at the end of the day, they were more happy for him. they were excited to see him on their tv screens with his perfect match on his arm. they knew buck was made for y/n from the day he met her.
when buck was picked up in the pitch black limo with shaded windows, he felt like the most luxurious man in the world. he was bouncing his leg up and down in the seat, y/n having to put her hand on it to calm him down.
“alright, so,” he begins. “what do i do? do i just stand there or do i pose or-“
“buck!” y/n giggles. “relax, it’s all gonna be ok. you’ll know what to do, trust me. i’ll be there the whole time.”
“i’ve never been on a red carpet before,” he exhales, starting to see the crowd of people outside. “can i hold your hand in there?”
y/n looks at him with gentle eyes, putting out her hand and squeezing his. as she steps out of the car with the help of the guards, buck slips his hand out. when he gets out of the car, he adjusts the buttons on his tux and connects with y/n again.
the walk down the carpet was casual, but also had buck internally panicking. he had never been in a room with so many celebrities at one time. seeing all the hot actors and actresses of the moment was so overwhelming, and whenever they shook his hand he felt like floating. he almost cried when andrew garfield looked in his direction. he was completely mesmerized by the way y/n interacted gracefully with everyone. he knew he had the right girl.
the air became thicker in the venue until the best actress category was called up. each of the names swiped through the massive screens and the names started to echo off the walls. the two actors at the front had the envelope, ready to reveal the name of the winning actress. buck felt the shaking of y/n’s hand, trying to ease her worries of losing, or even winning. some part of him knew that she won even before they called her name.
when he hears the thrilling, “y/n y/l/n in f/n!” on the mics, he jumps out of his seat. he looks at his girl with his jaw to the floor, tears already forming in his eyes. she’s still processing that her name was even called, but just looking at buck brings her back down.
“oh my god,” she whispers once he pulls her in.
“you did it! you fucking did it!” he leans away, cradling her face and giving her a kiss before letting her go up. she almost wishes she could drag him up too, or stay down on the floor with him. “go get ‘em,” he winks.
y/n’s speech ran through her lips quickly, being unprepared as she told the world what she thought. “holy shit,” she breathlessly chuckles. “thank you to everyone who helped me get here today, my family, my parents, my coworkers on this movie. i’m so thankful i even get to be on this stage. the director, greta, you are absolute magic. this is one of the best projects i’ve ever been involved in and- oh my god, why is this timed? but anyway, also evan, i love you more than words and this is all for you!” she blew him a kiss before running of stage, picking up the layers of her dress to show off her new shiny award to him.
flashes of bucks face and y/n’s director came over the screen, making y/n and him the hot topic for the night. fans all over social media were buzzing with excitement, finally getting to see the man who painted the bliss onto y/n. news headlines and tweets were filled with, “y/n y/l/n and her new boyfriend - hollywoods new power couple?”
every time she saw one, y/n smiles brightly and sent it to buck who showed it off to his friends. now, when he sat around the table with y/n or just lay with her in bed, he knew she was more than just some girl. she was the one for him no matter what, and he didn’t need the internets approval to realize that. despite the few hateful people, buck chooses to ignore them completely. they’re not the one laying next to y/n right now.
he faces the teasing from his sister and his best friends about being the new hollywood boyfriend, but as long as he’s y/n’s, that’s all he needs.

“Savannah, we can’t put this off to another day. We have to turn in our plans by Friday morning!” you sigh, massaging your temples. Savannah was a hard worker, but having her partner on this project go on maternity leave earlier than unexpected had really rattled her. She began twirling the ends of her hair as she chewed her bottom lip, your words going in one ear and out the other. You shake your head before stepping closer to your coworker, placing a hand on each of her shoulders to try to get through to her.
“Sav, listen to me. Janet is going to kill us if we can’t prove to her that we can handle this event. The flights and talent are already booked, we just need to decide who we want to speak at this convention and nail down the catering. All the other little details, I will take on myself. Deal?” You shoot her a soft smile, her shoulders slouching into her olive green cardigan. She exhales deeply, eyes closing before opening them to meet your gaze. “Okay, deal. Let’s do this!”
“Have a great night, Sav! I’ll see you tomorrow.” You shout over your shoulder as you stride out of the office, waving to Savannah as she returns a smile to you, the humidity providing a slight fog to her glasses.
After hopping into your car, you crank up the AC and turn on your playlist before driving down Rodeo drive toward home. The palm trees gently blowing in the breeze, the lit up signs..it was quiet for a Wednesday night. Granted, it was only 8pm, but still. In the 6 months you’d lived in LA, you hadn’t been able to go anywhere without seeing some type of night life or large groups of people gathered, having fun in their shorts and Ray Bans. It wasn’t necessarily for you, but you had indulged in the lifestyle a bit. Going out for drinks with coworkers, seeing shows on the weekends, soaking up the sun on the beaches. It wasn’t home, but there are definitely worse places to live.
Working for Ignite Cons had been a dream come true. You started as an event coordinator in your hometown for tourists that would visit for shows that were filmed there, and ended up going viral online to catch the eye of the company. You loved working behind the scenes to make tourists and talent feel welcome, and their experience to go as smooth as possible. From tours, to dinners and even decorating and staging panel events - you had your hands in all of it. Immersing your mind into the world of these different shows or movies was never boring, and oftentimes challenged you to put your own personal interests aside to really think outside of the box about what fans or stars would want to see or do.
You succeeded at this for 3 years before Ignite reached out, bringing you on to focus solely on Hollywood -esque events to be hosted by the company for different brand trips, special dinners in town or anything else they may want to host. You were quickly pulled away from caring for fans and tourists to being sent a dozen emails from publicists and assistants to ensure the talent attending these events had any and every possible thing they could need. Instead of focusing themed dinners around a tv show or film, you were setting up panels, teachings or classes for actors, singers, stunt doubles, etc. all across the world to attend in hopes to re spark that creativity or drive in them for an upcoming job. To ignite their love for their job and to bring in the money for the production companies and all involved, hence the company’s name: Ignite.
You turn the key to your apartment, the sweet smell of vanilla and sugar cookies filling your lungs as you toss your keys on the counter and mentally pat yourself on the back for setting your diffuser before you left this morning. You peel your high heels off your feet, stepping onto the cold hardwood floors and exhaling with a smile at how nice it felt on your sore feet.
After a shower and warm mug full of some tea, you drift off to sleep before another full day ahead.
“No, Thomas, that won’t be an issue. I’ll get a check in the mail to you by this afternoon. Of course! Oh, and do you guys have any special desserts you could prepare as well? Maybe a dairy, non dairy and gluten free option? Yeah…you know how we roll in California. Ha! Okay, perfect.” you smile while twisting the phone chord with your finger as you check ‘Find caterer’ off your to do list. Three knocks on your office door shake you from your concentration, turning your attention to your boss waving at you, motioning for you to meet her in her office when you are finished. You thank Thomas and hang up, smoothing out your dress before grabbing your notebook and heading to Anne’s office down the hall.
“Ah, there she is! Please, have a seat.” Anne smiles warmly at you, gesturing toward the velvet armchair in front of her. You take a seat and cross your legs, opening up your notes in anticipation of her questions. “So, how is the project going? Is Savannah hanging in there?” She begins, clicking her pen as she shuffles some papers around her desk. “We are making great progress! I have already found a caterer, and Sav is supposed to be choosing from a handful of speakers as well as a paint and sip instructor. She’s hanging in there.” You flash your boss a sympathetic smile. Anne nods, scribbling on her paper and nodding slowly. “Good. I knew you two could do it. I really appreciate you stepping up with Leslie being out. I don’t know what I would do without you! I promise, once we get past this event in Tennessee, I will release you back to your regular tasks and behind the scenes zone.” Anne smiles at you once more before standing from her chair, mirroring her movement. “See you Friday morning!”
She closes the door behind you as you return to your own office, her words echoing in your head. Why did she say back to behind the scenes? Wasn’t this still behind the scenes work, technically? Maybe she didn’t mean anything by it…
The work day comes and goes, and next thing you know it’s Friday morning. You slip into your black work pants, heels and maroon blouse. You make sure to spend a little extra time on your makeup and hair today, as you and Savannah will be giving a presentation on the entire two week agenda for Ignite’s next convention you two named “Expressions”.
Savannah had all but fought you on the name of the convention, having fallen in love with a couple of the activities and teachers she had found regarding actors wanting to expand their emotional range for different projects, specifically showing it in their facial expressions. Teaching them how to react in certain scenes while also showcasing how they can under react in some ways as well to let co stars and the sets built around them shine when and if need be. To not overdue a character or emotion.
You and Savannah gave a final wink to each other before standing before the executives, your boss included, to click through your slide show and pitch the theme, dinner menus, lodging and finalize the talent who were attending. The budget had been respected, and after the hour long pitch came to a close, applause was all you and Savannah could hear ringing in your ears. All the tension and anxiety melted away. The company officially gave you both the green light and outlined the responsibilities the two of you, as well as other staff would have for the convention.
Among the laundry list of roles and requirements was physically being in Tennessee for the duration of the event, and helping to assist the talent in getting to and from their chosen activities each day. The resort would have golf carts for each person attending, and everyone would have someone from Ignite as well as other companies helping keep the talent on schedule and basically being their assistant for the two weeks they were away from their regular day to day schedules and teams. Suddenly, Anne’s comment from the other day finally made sense. Doing your best not to show your distaste in front of everyone in the conference room, you sign the contracts and shake hands with everyone before grabbing Savannah’s arm to pull her into the breakroom.
“How’d I do? No, how did we do?!” Savannah excitedly asks, her voice low. You give each other a high five. “I think it went great! I’m so happy they liked our ideas and all the activities we lined up. But I have to be honest, I am not thrilled about the whole talent handler thing.” You scrunch up your nose as you grab a water bottle out of the fridge.
“Are you kidding? I was hoping they’d at the very least allow us to go see our ideas come to life in person, but this is even better! Can you believe all of the talent going? I wonder who we will be assigned to!” Savannah’s enthusiasm causes you to take a deep breath in and adjust your tone. “You know I’m just more of a behind the scenes kind of girl, not really a face to face person.” You sip your water, watching as her smile grows.
“This will be good for both of us! We’re in it together, deal? Think of it like a work vacation. We have two months until November to get ready for this- don’t worry!”
You pace your apartment, staring at your suitcase full of boots, sweaters and everything else you could possibly need for your two week trip to Tennessee. You had a week before you had to leave, and come tomorrow morning you would know who you were assigned to as a handler. You hoped it would be someone nice, maybe someone your age or someone you enjoyed watching on tv. Maybe it would be someone older, someone more established? Your mind was swimming with possibilities as you fell asleep.
“Alright ladies, here are your assignments!” Anne claps her hands together before handing you both a manila envelope. Savannah’s jaw drops, and she holds the portfolio close to her chest. “I’m too nervous to look! You go first.” She nudges your arm, and you let out a sigh. “Alright, let’s see who I’ll be carting around…” You flip open the folder to see a photo of a 32 year old male actor, with dark hair and brown eyes.
“Dylan O’Brien? Not bad, not bad. I’ve seen him in a few movies!” You smile, before closing the portfolio and sliding your chair back in place as you glance to Savannah’s folder. “Okay Sav, your turn. Let’s see it!”
Taking a breath, she opens hers to read, “Glen Powell?” she reads the name, a curiosity in her voice. “I don’t know who this is. Do you?”
Anne shrugs, sitting back down behind her desk and reaching for her glasses. “You girls go home early for the day, time is ticking away and you need to be sure all your ducks are in a row!”
You take one more glance at the photo of Glen, heat rushing to your cheeks. You knew exactly who he was. In an effort to keep your composure, you quickly excuse yourself from your boss’ office, pulling Savannah with you. “Savannah..I know who he is. He’s one of my favorite actors! How have you not seen Twisters yet? Or what about "Set it Up?” You excitedly gush before Savannah cuts you off. “I’m sorry, but you got Dylan?! My celebrity crush? What! Not fair.” She pouts, crossing her arms as she follows you down the hallway to your office. Closing the door behind you, you sit her down in the chair. “Look, we are not going to be there as fans, we are there to work. We have to be professional, and I’d offer to switch with you but they’ve already been sent our names and photos- I checked. We have to forget that we’ve seen any of their work and strictly drive them around the property for the next two weeks, okay? Our jobs could be at stake if we don’t impress Anne and the company. Besides, this isn’t my job anyway.” You trail off, Savannah nodding slowly at your words. “You’re right. Okay, it will be as if we don’t know them. Got it. We can do this!” You both high five before heading home for the day.
On your drive home, your mind is going a mile a minute. Would Dylan be nice to work for, or would he be a total douche? And Glen…there will be so many people attending this thing, there’s no way your paths will cross. Right? Besides, this won’t be the time for photos or meet and greets. Glen, along with every other star there will be attending on their own accord, their own dime and will be looking to immerse themselves to try and hone their craft. You were not about to let your inner fangirl get in the way of that. They’re all just people like you, after all. You shake your head, smiling to yourself as you pull into your complex. This would be an interesting few weeks ahead.

I’ve Seen Celebrity P.R. Tactics at Work. Blake Lively Is Not Alone.
Tumblr media
By Elizabeth Spiers
Ms. Spiers, a contributing Opinion writer, is a journalist and a digital media strategist.
The actress Blake Lively is not someone I had a real opinion about before a few days ago, when the news broke that she had filed a legal complaint against Justin Baldoni, her “It Ends With Us” director and co-star, for sexual harassment and retaliation. But I saw a video a while back in which she appeared to be hostile to a reporter making a seemingly innocuous reference to her pregnancy. My impression was that she seemed a little rude and needlessly antagonistic. I saw the video thanks to a Daily Mail article suggesting that she was facing a backlash — one that, unbeknown to me, was allegedly the product of a smear campaign by a public relations firm hired by Mr. Baldoni to damage Ms. Lively’s reputation in order to pre-empt her accusations about his wildly inappropriate behavior on set.
Much of what we know about celebrities’ lives is shaped by P.R. professionals who are paid handsomely to create and spread stories that are flattering to their clients and unflattering to their perceived enemies. Reputation management is big business: The time and resources spent in Hollywood and New York to buff, polish and protect a star’s image can be greater than what’s spent to protect the reputations of some chief executives or senators. It’s a ruthless business, too. Dishonesty is often tolerated, on the dubious basis that entertainment is a frivolity and the stakes are low, and things like talent and truth can be tarnished with the art of the smear.
I saw the brute force of celebrity P.R. tactics up close early in my career after I co-founded the website Gawker in 2002 — which mostly covered well-known New Yorkers in the spirit of Spy magazine, which had christened Donald Trump a “short-fingered vulgarian” — and freelanced for The New York Post’s Page Six gossip column. In the first months of Gawker, in spite of having just around 10,000 readers a day, we got a cease-and-desist letter from Marty Singer, a well-known entertainment lawyer who insisted that we take down an unflattering story about one of his clients. The threat never went anywhere because we had not published the story but had merely linked to it. These were the early days of the internet, and many people didn’t understand how hyperlinks worked. It’s unclear to me even now whether his firm understood this perfectly well but sent the cease-and-desist letter to try to intimidate us anyway.
At Page Six, the P.R. apparatus of blocking and tackling was even more apparent because the gossip industry is so intertwined with celebrities. P.R. people wouldn’t just defend their clients; they would try to plant flattering stories, derail unflattering ones or pit celebrities against each other to redirect attention.
Most of the plants were fairly innocuous — a sighting of a celebrity at an upscale restaurant or a note about what a celebrity was wearing. Others were more strategic, and publicists would sometimes try to negotiate more flattering coverage of one client by offering a scoop about another or a tip about a client’s rival.
Sometimes publicists would use access to celebrities as leverage. On one occasion a powerful New York publicist was so angry that the head of the column wouldn’t kill a story about a friend and former love interest that she threatened to ban its staff members from all of her high-profile events. In retaliation, the columnist she threatened published a salacious blind item about her and called her parties “horrific.”
No one is more sensitive about celebrity image making and reputation management than the celebrities themselves. I was once on a panel with the actor Alec Baldwin at the Hamptons International Film Festival for a documentary that was partly about Gawker, and he more or less lit into me onstage because he was resentful about an item that the site published years after I left, reporting that he had called his then-11-year-old daughter, Ireland, a pig in an angry voice mail.
He suggested that entertainment journalists were leeches determined to invade his privacy and that he tried to stay out of the spotlight. I laughed because, in my view, this was obviously not true. Mr. Baldwin and other stars appeared regularly in Page Six — often because celebrity publicists called to plant flattering stories about them. (His wife, Hilaria Baldwin, a former lifestyle correspondent for “Extra,” a show about Hollywood celebrities, acknowledged to me at a dinner after a panel that this happened but suggested that their P.R. people did it without their knowledge.)
Now that so much reputation management happens on social media platforms and elsewhere on the internet, the sources of information — and ultimately, the truth and the manufactured lies about a celebrity — are harder to sort through.
This was something Mr. Baldoni’s P.R. firm is accused of exploiting on his behalf via coordinated posts on various platforms. They allegedly used a technique called astroturfing, in which they used social media accounts to create the impression that Ms. Lively was difficult to work with and betraying feminism in some way while playing up Mr. Baldoni’s credentials as a self-proclaimed feminist who cared about preventing domestic violence. And his P.R. firm was largely successful until Ms. Lively’s legal complaint laid out the alleged smear campaign. Her business suffered, and so did her reputation. (Mr. Baldoni’s attorney said in a statement to The Times that the accusations of a smear campaign were “categorically false.”)
Why are these techniques sometimes so damaging? Celebrities, actors in particular, traffic in narrative. People want to know about them because they see them play out human dramas onscreen and feel they can relate to them. Viewers develop what social psychologists call parasocial relationships with them — one-way relationships in which people identify with and feel they understand another person, who, to put it bluntly, doesn’t know they exist. They think they know something about who a celebrity is because they relate to characters the celebrity has played, and they’re genuinely curious about the lives of actors beyond their onscreen roles. Celebrities deal with this by hiring P.R. people to manage their reputations or simply keeping a low profile.
For stars like Ms. Lively and her husband, the actor Ryan Reynolds, keeping tabs on their public image is a necessity because the way people perceive them directly affects the success of their work. They are not just people who have a job in entertainment; they are brands. The machinery to protect or upend those brands is often as or more extensive than it is for large, high-profile companies, in part because people relate to stars very personally in a way that they don’t relate to institutions or products.
My 9-year-old son plays a video game called Fortnite and was delighted to discover Mr. Reynolds popping out of an A.T.M. in the game because he thinks Mr. Reynolds is hilarious and likable. (I agree, but I don’t know him personally, and this could be the work of very good P.R. people and a generally positive parasocial relationship.) These parasocial relationships are crucial to the business of Hollywood, where a popular actor can make or break a big-budget movie.
In this sense, Ms. Lively had another thing working against her: the particular line women have to walk in the public eye. They must be likable in a way that men don’t have to be. It probably says something positive about her that the worst thing Mr. Baldoni’s P.R. firm could produce in terms of smearing her were clips and social media posts that suggested she was unlikable and nitpicked about her posture and tone, which is easy to do with any high-profile woman, especially one who’s been interviewed hundreds of times. Everyone has an off day or a clip that can be unflattering out of context. If you have an impression of Ms. Lively and it’s generally negative, it may be because, like me, you saw one of those clips and the sprawling campaign that put those clips in front of you was invisible to you.
The allegations Ms. Lively makes in her complaint are chilling. Among other things, she says that Mr. Baldoni kept insisting that she perform sex scenes that were not part of the script, touched and kissed her without consent, suggested she was too fat and old to play the part and absurdly called for her to be nude for a scene in which she delivers a baby, because, she says he insisted, that’s what women do when they give birth. (Ms. Lively is a mother of four, by the way. She is not exactly unaware of what that process looks like.)
She dealt behind the scenes with all that she says happened, and the irony is that you and I would know nothing about it if Mr. Baldoni hadn’t allegedly tried to harm her reputation and was successful in doing so — at which point she felt she had little choice but to sue him and make it public.
The complaint itself is a kind of reputation management, one that’s far more effective than an astroturfing campaign because it’s transparent. You know who’s making the allegations and why. You know that a court will evaluate facts and evidence — not just viral gossip and planted stories about a given celebrity, often shaped by people you never see. You know the verdict can’t be reversed simply by the subterranean digital warfare of P.R. executives. And you know the reputations of all parties, in the end, will rise or fall not on celebrity image making but on something far closer to the truth.

Underrated friendship moment between Gar and Dick
In Beast Boy (2000), the mini-series written by Raab and Johns, Madame Rouge's daughter (Madame Rouge being the woman who killed the Doom Patrol and that Gar killed in NTT) impersonated Gar and murdered people Gar's former co-workers to frame him, and he got arrested.
Gar being a former famous child actor means the arrest was very public, and Dick quickly heard about it through Babs. As soon as he did, Dick gave up everything he was doing and flew to L.A. to see what was going on. Babs told him things didn't look good for Gar, but Dick maintained that Gar was innocent until proven guilty.
As a side note, this was set after the Titans reformed and after Gar refused to join, which itself was after Vic nearly destroyed the planet, and that was after the Quake. Given that Babs is seen having easy access to the news, this should be before the start of "No man's land", or after its end. And considering Gar says it's his first night back in Hollywood, this shouldn't have been long after the Titans decided to reform - so before the start of "No Man's Land". At the time, Dick was dealing with : solo heroing in Blüdhaven, regularly helping out in Gotham, reforming the Titans, and having his day job at Hogan's Alley.
Tumblr media
Beast Boy #2
(Hilariously those panels come directly after one of Gar praying that no Titan would hear about it)
Once there, Dick quickly tracked down the address of who he supposed would be the next victim, and was immediately faced with the impersonator threatening Don Dickerson, Gar's old producer.
At first, he was obviously angry that Gar could do such a thing, but he tried to convince the impersonator to stop going any further, and was reluctant to fight who he thought was Gar. The impersonator kept attacking Dick, and we thus have a panel of Dick throwing an enormous grizzly through a window with an outrageous pun.
Tumblr media
Beast Boy #3
Five minutes later, Dick figured out it was an impersonator because said impersonator hadn't called him by his real name yet - understanding everything that'd been going on (though not before saying how much it hurt him to have to do that to Gar).
Tumblr media
Beast Boy #3
Then Flamebird showed up to "save" Dick, explained the situation to him, but of course the impersonator used that moment to attack them again and escape. Dick then used the Haly's circus paycheck to bail Gar and his cousin Matt out (the bail was already set at $25,000 for Gar).
Tumblr media
Beast Boy #3
The charges were obviously not dropped and the press was waiting ravenously outside to get information from Gar when Matt and he got out of their cells. Dick was waiting in a car driven by Bette to get them, and when they got in Dick told Gar he was in serious trouble. Gar said he knew but that he could handle it, Dick retorted he wasn't so sure about that. Gar snapped that Dick couldn't tell him what he could or couldn't do and that he could make his own decisions.
Obviously, from Dick's point of view, Gar didn't have and shouldn't have had to deal with that kind of situation alone - there's easier than having several murder charges to your name, having an enemy set on getting revenge against you that can shapeshift into you, all while being in the public eye. Plus Dick's about three to four years older than Gar, and for most of NTT Gar was the little brother of the group, the immature and irresponsible funny troublemaker. In universe, it hadn't been that long since Dick and Gar'd left the Titans - two years at most.
Tumblr media
Beast Boy #3
(Seriously Dick why do you have such a flare for the dramatics why are you dressed like a CEO lmao ?)
Meanwhile Gar, at the time, was in a period of difficult transition. He didn't feel like he'd been taken seriously as a hero and even by a person by others and especially his friends (this was reinforced by the fact that when the Titans reformed he wasn't the first person they asked; Dick asked him as if it was a given at the first reunion but Gar then refused to join). So he was looking for positive attention by going back to something that'd put him in the spotlight but that'd stopped once he'd started being a Titan, that is acting. He also wanted to prove to himself that he could do something of his life, with a need for independence typical of early adulthood. In fact, in Titans : Secret files and origins, Gar explicitely referred to the Titans as family, saying everyone needed to leave their families sometimes, implying he was the bird leaving the nest.
On top of that, he wanted to make his dead adoptive mother (Rita Starr) proud, and she too had a connection to acting and movies.
The rest of the car ride was tense, and they had a conversation once they were at Matt's flat (Matt lives in a dump, by the way). Gar explained to Dick he'd already had to grow up on his own after Dick and he'd left the Titans, that he needed time "to stand on his own two feet" and that Dick of all people should be able to understand that given that he'd done the same with Bruce.
Dick tacitly accepted Gar's speech by giving him evidence he stole at the preccinct (unless he convinced the policeman to give it to him with level 450 charisma lol). Gar and Dick parted on good terms.
Tumblr media
Beast Boy #3
(Please tell me those are special sunglasses, otherwise I'm going to have a flashback to Black Mirror with Dick telling Tim "They're wearing sunglasses at night, Red Robin, which means they're really, really cool" and break into a fit of giggles)
It's at times like this that the Titans really feel like a family. It's obvious in the way Gar referred to the Titans as a family he needed to leave to build his own life and identity outside of them and in the way he drew a parallel between Dick and Bruce on the one hand, and he, Dick, the Titans and Dayton on the other.
Even funnier, it's in the way Gar got in trouble, prayed that his family/friends wouldn't find out before Dick immediately found out. It's in the way Dick dropped everything to help him, bailed Gar's arse out of jail and was waiting for him in the car like a tired dad. It's in the way he wasn't sure Gar was ready to handle such big life troubles, but Gar fought to argue that he was ready and proclaimed his independence before Dick decided to trust him.
Interestingly, it puts Dick somewhere between the role of an older brother/father figure. He's not that much older than Gar, but always seemed so, despite moments of brotherly camaraderie.
Plus the dynamic between them is much more hierarchical than, say, Dick and Tim's brotherhood. That's partly because Dick was the leader of the team Gar was a part of. Due to that fact, Gar's always seen Dick handle a lot of responsibilities and that right at the time Dick was coming into adulthood and wasn't certain of who he wanted to be (so he had entire periods he was much more serious than he would otherwise be).
Add to that the differences between Gar's careless, happy-go-lucky exterior and Dick's overresponsible personality and it's perhaps not surprising that Gar put Dick there in the place of Bruce in the parallel he drew between he and Dick - the trusted adult who hasn't seen that his kid's grown and needs to let go so that his kid can stand on his own.
And I love that Gar specifically said that he'd grown without Dick, that he singled out Dick in the list of people he needed to grow independent from. It really reinforces the idea that Dick was a mentor to Gar.
As an aside 2, Dick was later framed for murder too by corrupt cops, and it makes me shake my head that here, the point was about whether Gar could handle this on his own though Dick was ready to back him up anyway (and that after investigating to understand what'd been going on and bailed Gar out); while in Nightwing : Target, Bruce left Dick to fend off for himself after stripping him of his Nightwing identity, berated him about joining the police force, and was like "you better be grateful I came to your flat while you were busy being badgered by corrupt officers to remove all evidence of your secret identity you careless child".
As an aside 3, I believe Dick was a bit less friendly than he otherwise would be because of Bette's presence. He doesn't like her much, and her fawning over him makes him uncomfortable.
Still, it's crazy I have never seen anyone talk about this time Dick paid more than $25,000 to bail Gar out of prison and potentially stole evidence to help him while he was being framed for murder.

AVY KAUFMAN (legendary Hollywood casting director) on the DEADLINE panel for The Crowded Room – "Actors needed to keep up with Tom, you know? They all had a responsability to act opposite Tom and do a great job. Every scene has to go back to the respect for Akiva and how important the story is for the world, for every human being. For whatever you go through, we all have our up's and down's and this is a very important script. So all the actors had to keep up with Tom. Whether it be Amanda [Seyfried] or Lior [Raz]. A lot of the friends in the beginning are first time actors, because they were all simple, they were enjoying life. But then you get the heaviness of it, and then you need stronger actors to present. You need to follow the rhythm to who can bring out those words and keep up with Tom, and express these situations - as heavy as they were."

Actors in the video game industry are going on strike. On Thursday, the union representing voice and motion-capture performers announced they would be walking off the job after talks with major video game companies broke down over concerns regarding AI protections. The work stoppage is set to begin Friday.
“We’re not going to consent to a contract that allows companies to abuse AI to the detriment of our members,” Fran Drescher, the president of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), which represents the performers, said in a prepared statement. “Enough is enough. When these companies get serious about offering an agreement our members can live—and work—with, we will be here, ready to negotiate.”
Several members of SAG-AFTRA are currently at Comic-Con International in San Diego for panels and other appearances. They will still be able to honor their obligations this weekend “given the close proximity” of the strike announcement to the event, which runs through Sunday. “Solidarity,” Dragon Age: The Veilguard voice actor Erika Ishii posted on X. “We’ll be fulfilling contracts at SDCC but afterwards we hold the line.” Last year’s Hollywood strikes greatly reduced the number of performers able to participate in Comic-Con events.
Tensions over AI between SAG members and major video game companies have been high for months. Negotiations between the two sides began in earnest in October 2022. Members voted to authorize a strike in September 2023. “Eighteen months of negotiations have shown us that our employers are not interested in fair, reasonable AI protections, but rather flagrant exploitation,” Sarah Elmaleh, SAG’s negotiating chair for the Interactive Media Agreement (IMA) that covers video game workers, said in a statement. “We refuse this paradigm—we will not leave any of our members behind, nor will we wait for sufficient protection any longer.”
In the video game industry, actors regularly lend their voice, likeness, and even movements to projects. Voice acting and motion-capture are a crucial part of game development, even as AI begins to change the way developers create their games. Despite success on other points, video game companies and SAG have been unable to find common ground on AI.
“We are disappointed the union has chosen to walk away when we are so close to a deal, and we remain prepared to resume negotiations,” Audrey Cooling, a spokesperson for the video game companies involved in the negotiations said in a statement to WIRED. That group includes companies such as Activision, Disney, Electronic Arts, Insomniac Games, Take-Two, and Warner Bros., among others.
“We have already found common ground on 24 out of 25 proposals, including historic wage increases and additional safety provisions,” Cooling said. “Our offer is directly responsive to SAG-AFTRA’s concerns and extends meaningful AI protections that include requiring consent and fair compensation to all performers working under the IMA. These terms are among the strongest in the entertainment industry.”

Taylor was so open and vulnerable in many moments of that panel. He talked about how much hard work he put in to get to where he is now, even saying "fuck it" to his parents and following a different path than what they wanted. He talked about his auditions, how he didn't feel right enough to play Marco, he talked about how he doesn't care about the glamor of that Hollywood life because he already knows what it's like and it's empty and he doesn't want to be just a face on a poster but he wants to do things that make sense to people and that definitely complicates his whole life path, even more so than it already is.
He has repeatedly said how grateful he is for what he has, for "being here today", he is grateful that people consider him their Alex.
He is a good person, with a big heart and it's so sad how many do not want to see all this and prefer to hate him, belittle him, misrepresent everything he is when perhaps he is one of the most open and transparent and good actors there are today.
exactly. he's a good soul, with good intentions and wants to help people and say something with his work. and people want to hate him, for nothing.

Ok so before you say I’m a ewan hater I used to be an obsessed fan but honestly the rest of ewan nation or whatever they call themselves honestly ruined it and now he’s eh. My question is this how would you feel if he got social media ? I would feel like he is just another Hollywood lemming . It was so refreshing ( it is rather) that he didn’t …. It’s almost as if now he’s become full of himself and that’s why he’s doing press …. Idk I can’t describe it and I know I’ll get hate for this but eh wtf idc it is what it is
Why don’t we chill and leave him alone instead? He’s an actor, he’s doing the job for which he’s been paid. He gets socials? Fine. I’m not his lawyer, I don’t see why this should affect me or you. It’s also a bit sad to judge a stranger whether they decide to get an ig account or not, or worse, for how they behaved during a comicon panel. What did you expect him to do precisely? Sit in a corner and sulk?
Maybe instead of blaming Ewan nation for whatever you think we’ve ruined, you should stop gatekeeping the man.
Ps: please don’t send me more asks like this or saying I’m not open to discuss or accept different opinions. I’ve heard your opinions and I disagree. Let me be a simp in peace. Take care!
